The predicament of captains at the toss
Abide by law or face prosecution
The Central government
has issued a catagorical tough message to India heads of social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, Whatsupp and youtube to restrain themselves from publishing any false messages and videos that trigger communal disharmony and hatred that lead to lynching. The lynching of 40 people in last one year alleged for the false circulation of false news made the government for the stern pronouncement. The serious issue was discussed by a committee of secretaries constituted for this special purpose. for curbing fake news, misinformations, child pornography, theft and communal tensions and abuse. The panel is headed by union home secretary
submitted its report to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and assisted by External Affairs Mininster Sushma Swaraj, Law Minister Ravishankae Prasad and Social Justice Minister Thawar Hehlot. The centre issued advisories to all states and Union Territories following Apex Court's stern directives to check incidents of lynching. The centre also directed them to appoint an officer at the level of Superintendent of Police to set up a task force in each district to gather intelligence reports and closely monitor social media contents to prevent mob attacks, prevention of child lifters, theft, or cattle smugglers which are fuelled by various kinds of negative rumours and false news. Thus such persons who take the law in their own hands, run against
kathopanishad A holy Brahmin by name Vajasiravus performed a great Yagna. The condition of the Yagna is that the doer of this Yagna should give as charities all his assets and belongings to all persons. His wise son, Nasikethus asked his father what is the use of giving a dry cow as a dhanam? Instead you should give me as a dhan who is close to your heart. Then he went towards his father and asked him to whom he is going to give him as a dhan? His father did not reply to his son's mad and useless question. He did not leave his father at this stage but stressed him for a reply. He got infuriated and said that he be given as a dhan to Lord Yama. His father immediately got perturbed and frustrated for having said this which cannot be retraced. But Nasikethus was least worried and said to his father "You do not worry. I will go to Lord Yama for good returns". Then Nasikethus went to the abode of Yama and waited there for 3 full days without food since he went out of the abode. Lord Yama returned to his abode and felt sorry for the happenings. He felt that having come to his abode as a guest, would come in the form of a fire. If he is not well treated, the fire will engulf everything and destroy his good virtues and ambitions, his children and holy cows.
Then Yama told Nasikethus that he did a big folly to him for not feeding him for 3 days having come s a guest and he blamed himself for his wrongful actions. He prostrated before him and requested him to pardon him for having made to wait without food for 3 days at his abode and in lieu of it, I will grant you 3 boons. Nasikethus was happy and thought for a while and asked as a first boon to forgive his father for the anger showered on him. Yama said alright. Let it be.There is no fear for swarga loga. There is neither death nor getting old age in swarga loga. Those who defeats hunger and thirst certainly reaches swarga loga and live in rejoice, bliss and total happiness. Then Nasikethus asked Yama what should I do to reach swarga loga, either do Yaga or thapas? You please teach me that feat which is my second boon. Lord Yama having accepted it, illustated about the Agni feat to him and explained how to make Agni kundas to perform. Having understood with rapt attention, Nasikethus repeated what Yama told him and Yama was very happy with him. Having very much pleased, he said that this feat will be called hereinafter as Nasikethagni. Those who perform this Yagna with

the legal tenets of law and justice should be summarily taken to task. All state governments and union territory functionaries and law enforcement agencies are requested to implement the directives of the Supreme Court in letter and spirit. The central government has warned the global social heads that action may be initiated against them if they do not comply to remove objectionable contents and videos from their sites. Hence a stern warning, abide by law or face prosecution. S. Ganapathy
reverence will get the power to banish attachments and go to Swarga Loga and live happily. Naskethus then asked Yama his third boon. A human being after his death will leave his body but his atma, the soul never dies. There are a lot of contradictions about the concept of atma and you please profess and clarify me about atma. Yama was perplexed and bewildered very much. He did not tell the secrecy that even devas do not understand the real truth about it. Nasikethus repeatedly said that he is the fit person to receive the truth in clear terms. Yama then said " I bless you to have sons and grandsons who live for hundred years, cows, elephants and horses and gold everything. You will also live a long life that you aspire. You will rule this world. I will send you home maids to assist you. You do not ask me about the secrecy of death. Nasilkethus was impatient and did not yield to his words. He said resolutely that all these things are lost one day and it destroys ones sense organs also. The life is short. I do not want all the material comforts. I request you to explain me the quintessance of atma which normal people do not understand. You explain me in clear terms that it is not easily understandable and hidden. This is my third boon.

The Predicament of Captains at the toss Every Cricket match starts with a bit of a raffle in the form of toss. As the coin goes up in the air, it is not only the captains involved in the process who are nervous. It is the entire fanbase of both the teams, whose hearts miss a beat before the tossed coin finishes its journey. The dilemma for every captain winning the toss is whether to bat or bowl first. 1. Factors determining the decision of captains at the toss A) Format of the game The format of the game, whether a five day Test match or a 50 overs One day International or a T20 match, determine the choice. If it is a Test Match, though not always, captains are more inclined to bat first. If it is a T20 match, teams would want to bowl first as nobody knows what a safe score is in T20s. The ODI is somewhere in between where the captains take into consideration the other factors as well to arrive at an appropriate decision. B) Locale of the match and nature of the wicket When matches are played on slow and low sub-continental pitches like India and Sri Lanka, teams would love to invariably bat first, more so in a Test match. Such pitches are more conducive to bat on the first two days. As the game progresses, the wicket slows down bringing the slow bowlers into play. In places like Englad, NZ and South Arica, it is better to bowl first. C) Composition and strength of the team A team, packed with fast bowlers would look to bowl first, whereas a team with more spinners would love to bat first. Some teams are good at chasing any target, while some others are more comfortable in setting a reasonable target and then defending the same with their bowling resources. D) External factors like rain and dew In a day-night match, the dew factor will come into play. Bowlers struggle to grip the ball when there is dew. For the batsmen, the ball will skid through and come onto the bat nicely. When captains anticipate dew later in the night, they choose to bowl first and complete their team’s bowling before the dew sets in. If rain is predicted for the day, teams would opt to chase. E) The significance of the game In a crucial match like a knockout match or the final, it is always better to bat first and put runs on the board. That way the pressure can be shifted to the opposition. 2. Mind games played by Captains at the toss It has nowadays become a trend for the captain losing the toss to say that he should have done the same what the other Captain has asked him to do. Supposing a captain wins the toss and asks the opposition to bat, the opposition captain would say I would have batted first in any case. Some animated captains would go one step further by saying, “Had I Known the decision of the opposition captain earlier, I would not have come for the toss”.
C. Namasivayam @ 94440 06343 Sometimes when a captain is indecisive at the toss, you will hear him say, “It is a good toss to lose” or “ It is a blessing in disguise to lose the toss”. The captains, when unsure, are more than happy to let the opposition captain take a decision. 3. Seldom captains think out of the box at the toss : As a faithful fan of Cricket, most of the times, I wonder why a captain doesn’t think out of the box at the toss. Imagine a situation in a match where both the captains wish to bowl first. In such a predicted state of affairs, one captain could go for the jugular by packing his team with more bowlers and opting to bat first. By doing so, he could surprise the opposition and seize the game by the scruff of the neck. He could strive to control the match with his excessive bowling resources. But all International captains are reluctant to take such risks. 4. Good idea to dispense with the toss in case of weaker teams It is high time now for International Cricket Council (ICC) to dispense with the toss where one of the teams involved is weaker. In such a case, the weaker teams should be given the option to do whatever they wish to do, that is to say, to bat or bowl first. 5. Is Toss going for a Toss? There have been recent discussions in ICC to dispense with the practice of toss. This is to negate the home team advantage arising out of preparing tailor-made wickets to suit the home team. But it will take some time to do away with this age-old tradition. 6. How important is the toss in the context of a game? Toss is just not a formality. It is an important factor determining the outcome of a match. There are some matches where the mantra would be “ Win the toss and Win the Match”. Toss gives so much undue advantage to one team to surge ahead in the game before a ball is bowled. Again, it is not that the simple. It is not safe to presume that the team winning the toss always ends up winning the match. It is the performance of the players to back up the decision of their captain, that will decide the fate of a match. To conclude, the importance of a toss could be better explained by an incident. It was the most famous match ever played on Indian soil. Like any other final, a lot depended on the outcome of the toss. However, in the background of the noisy crowd, the match referee could not hear what the visiting captain had called. The visiting captain knew how important it was for his team to win the toss and bat first in a final. In the commotion leading up to the toss, the home team captain thought he had won the toss. But the visiting captain, fearing the worst, simply kept mum when asked what he had called. Presuming the whole world didn’t hear if he had called head or tail. But the visiting captain himself should have definitely known what he had called. Keeping in mind the interest of his team, he was tight-lipped. This led to re-toss which the visiting captain genuinely won. It was another story for another day to narrate that karma caught up with that visiting captain even before that night was out. Ironically, it was his opposite number, who was graceful enough to concur for the re-toss to happen, who finished off the match in style by depositing the last ball of the match into the Arabian sea.
