Is the TNPL a boon or a bane for young aspiring cricketers
Column Writing...
Child abuse horror The supreme court issued a stern and sharp warning with ire on the culpability of Bihar government on the Muzaffarpur shelter home episode, highlighting inhuman serious abuses on young girls. It also called for the accountability on the Bihar government for its misgovernance.. In the meantime, another serious episode exploded in Bihar that three of its inmates were raped. In another shelter home in Bihar, two of its inmates died mysteriously which is in the eye of a storm. By a recent study undertaken by Tata Institute of Social Sciences revealed startling facts that the sexual abuse in 15 Bihar shelter homes are rampant that even some inmates were pregnant and even had babies. On interrogation, the girls also revealed that the male staff molested them on a regular basis. Another serious case exploded in Deora in U.P where a twelve year old girl escaped from the clutches of women's shelter home and reached the police. On interrogation, the girls complained that with the active co-operation and connivance of its manager, very many girls at the shelter home were physically and sexually exploited.. The sorry state of affairs is that its license was suspended by the department of child welfare and also it came under the ambit of CBI in 2017 which found mammoth financial irregularities and illegal running of the home. Very many homes of such nature are administered by NGOs with huge political connections .In Deora, it is allowed that though its license was cancelled, it was alleged that the local police allowed and continued to send girls to it which is condemnable. There is a close link and nexus between the police and the government
officials with those who run the homes. Such people have become tools to obtain government grants while the inmates are abused and exploited. Normally, poor destitudes, deprived children are sent out of poverty for their good future and protection, but in reality their future at these homes are doomed where there is no succour for them. Thousands of homes are run in all parts of the country as NGOs where there is big political clout and we receive a lot of complaints in managing its affairs and the real protection of the children as envisaged in the Act is questionable. There is a lack of proper supervision by the government and exposes a lack of administrative oversight which is glaring. Hence the homes have become a place for sex, horror and despair. There should be a proper system to run it efficiently which has to be linked to schools run by trained staff, qualified counsellers, educational experts and doctors. The real story of the children do not come out and shared with others out of fear and overall security for their life. Moreover the fact is that the lost, abandoned. disabled girls with speech and hearing impaired, mentally ill girls, victims of violence, displacements and abandoned elders are dumped there even after its registration is cancelled. When verifying the home registers in U.P show that 28 inmates were rescued out of 48 inmates and the rest were missing or absconded. Besides allegations of abuse and sex torture and the children were also starved except giving a porridge a day. By all accounts, the homes are run by well known NGOs and social workers in U.P where they are running since 1993 like centres fo senior citizens, adoption homes and shelter homes for
children and women. All these tales could come S. Ganapathy out that a 7358768630 whistleblower aged 10 years told the police authorities to wake and said when interrogated that the home owners advised not to open their mouth against them and if said they will kill them which is horrifying. It is a welcome feature that the central government has called for a social audit of 9000 child shelters in the country. It is prudential and imperative that instead of enacting new laws, proper oversight by concerned department officials. ministries concerned and good surveillance and administrative action is the need of the hour. What we are witnessing shelter homes have indeed become shelterless homes and horror homes for the destitute children. It is imperative that the central government should set up a central agency in coordination with state authorities with wide powers to conduct frequent social audits for such shelters. Even students and volunteer groups could play a significant role in checking abuses and better rehabilitation measures for their secured life for a good future. The government should tighten its roles in supervision and follow up and proper accountability. In cases of errants and violations, firm and deterrant action must be taken for a long sentence not less than 10 years through special courts in curbing such abuses in the welfare homes and cancel its licence fothwith. The government may also form village or town committees to monitor the homes frequently to verify any abuses of chilldren and assist them in case of any emergency.

The Tamilnadu
Premier League (TNPL) has completed its third year of existence. Hearty congratulations to the SIECHEM MADURAI PANTHERS TEAM for winning the title this year after failing to win a single TNPL match in the last 2 years. At this juncture, it would be fitting to evaluate the role of TNPL in nurturing and promoting young cricket talent in Tamilnadu. When the tournament first started in August 2016, it was believed that this tournament, a bit of a copy cat of the IPL, would keep the interest of Tamil Nadu cricket fans alive in the absence of their super team Chennai Super Kings from IPL for a period of two years. Nevertheless, the main objective was to identify fresh and new talent and give them an opportunity to flourish at a higher level. In Tamil Nadu, unlike in other states, most of the league matches (except higher divisions), inter academy matches and inter school matches are normally played on matting wickets for fair bounce. This flaw - lack of opportunity and facility at the base level - is clearly noticeable in the young players at TNPL. But the tournament, despite being a T20 league, has opened up opportunity for many such inexperienced players to exhibit their skills on turf pitches under lights. At the infant stage, most of these raw players struggle to switch over to the next level in all departments of the game. As a result, we have seen very few players reaching the next level after playing TNPL. Having said that, the TNPL has given these players a platform at the grassroot level itself to perform. It has given them the chance to appraise themselves in identifying their weaknesses, keeping in context the long hard road ahead of them in their cricketing career. TNPL and IPL are not directly comparable as the quality of Cricket, star value, hype and stakes are totally different. But both the leagues are similar in one aspect : spotting talent. In that respect, the TNPL in its present form is a double edged weapon for bowlers. Being a T20 competition, all the bowlers are expected to go for lot of runs, more so in the case of a young inexperienced bowlers. Sometimes such bowlers are taken to the cleaners, in the process shattering their confidence.
But if someone wants to learn swimming, he should be thrown into the deep end of the pool. A tournament like the TNPL cultivates fearless, dare devil approach among players. While batsmen learn to be positive from the first ball, bowlers learn to be patient and relentless. The effectiveness and influence of TNPL on Tamilnadu cricketers can be gauged by the number of TNPL players graduating to the next level of cricket Ranji Trophy, Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, IPL and so on. One of the earliest beneficiaries of the inaugural TNPL were the lanky left arm fast bowler T. Natarajan and the all - rounder Washington Sundar. Based on their good show in the first TNPL, they came into prominence and could make it to IPL teams – in the case of Sundar, all the way into the Indian team. Aside from these, there were a very few young players like Sai Kishore, Sanjay Jadav, Rohit Ravikumar, Athisayaraj Davidson and Jagadeesan who have reaped the benefits of playing in the TNPL. This year’s TNPL saw the emergence of a new ambidextrous bowler in Mokit Hariharan, playing for VB Kanchi veerans. It is great that the TNPL could unearth a talent like a Hariharan, who can bowl with either hands depending upon the batting style of the batsman on strike. That brings us to the vital question:. Does the TNPL justify its very presence? Though TNPL is on the right track, there are a few changes that are needed. Here they are in brief: 1. To start with, the TNPL Committee can increase the strength of the squad of each team from the present 19 players to a maximum of 25 players. That way, more players get to have a feel of the ambiance of the big stage matches. Some of those additional players could be selected from the lower division and some more players from the under 19 and district levels to keep all the players at all levels interested. 2. The TNPL should fix and specify minimum number of under 19 and district players to be present in a playing XI to encourage that faction. 3. In the coming years, barring national duty, the TNPL organisers should ensure the continuous presence of big guns like R.
Ashwin, Dinesh Karthik, Murali Vijay, Washington Sundar and Vijay Shankar. This would not only add a lot of flavor to the tournament, but also facilitate in accomplishing the main objective of the league – mentoring young payers. 4. The TNPL can be expanded to more cities in Tamilnadu to take the game to a wider audience. More over, when matches are conducted in limited venues, the pitches tend to slow down half - way into the tournament – a situation that can be avoided by playing in more grounds. 5. The TNPL can take a leaf out of the IPL book and create home grounds for each of the eight teams. By adding more venues and by creating home grounds for each team, the league can attract more loyal local followers. 6 The TNPL being a T 20 tournament, should be played on true wickets with some bounce rather than on traditional slow and low pitches. High - scoring matches always attract huge audiences. Further, sporting wickets help prepare the youngsters to face similar challenges when they go outside the state. The TNPL can aspire to prepare different types of wickets at different venues for providing the players better exposure to varying conditions. 7. The TNPL should device a mechanism to safeguard young players at a tender age from over exposure to the commercial aspects of the game and from the preying eyes of the media. The TNPL should be devoid of the brightspotlight menace of the IPL. 8. The TNPL should continue with the present restriction on outstation players, whether capped or uncapped. The presence of quality outstation players will no doubt increase the competitive level of the tournament, but at the same time will deny opportunities to deserving young local talent. To sum it all up, the TNPL is a very good initiative to promote young talent in Cricket. It has proved its worth within a short span of 3 years. However, it still has a long way to go. The TNPL has given a platform to youngsters to showcase their talent. It is now up to the players to grab the opportunity and prosper. With the system in place, it is only a matter of time before we stumble upon a Kris Srikkanth or a Robin Singh or a R.Ashwin.
