NATIONAL JOURNALISM DAY! Every Year the National Journalism Day is celebrated on 17 November in India. On this day we celebrate the freedom of speech, thoughts and virtues as well as the role of media in shaping our society. During 1920s, the writer Walter Lippmann and an American Philosopher John Dewey, exchanged their views over the role of journalism in a democratic society. This was the time when modern journalism came into the picture. Journalism plays a role of mediator between the public and policy makers. This role was performed by the journalist. They used to listen and record the message spoken by the elites. This message was processed and conveyed it to the public in the form of information. The Government of India have introduced various policies and practices towards journalists, which signify their scope of research and writing, and also what press organizations can publish. Journalists have some privileges which general public do not, and they can also interview the senior officials, politicians, celebrities and other persons in focus. Those journalists who are involved in sensitive issues are given special protection by government. Journalism ethics comprises principles of ethics and good practices which are applicable to the various challenges faced by the journalists. This is known as professional “code of ethics” or the “canons of journalism”. This is followed by professional journalism associations as well as broadcast and online news organizations. The journalist should follow the principles of genuineness, integrity, neutrality, legitimacy and public answerability. This will result in the transformation of information into news disseminated to the public. Journalism ethics include the principle of “limitation of harm”, which prevents the harm done to someone’s reputation, including the names of minor children, crime victims, and other civilians. Some of the interactions with various sources require that confidentiality be maintained by the journalists. This is an extension of freedom of the press which gives a legal protection to the journalists and keeps the identity of confidential source in curtain even when demanded by the government. There are many forms of censorship which may restrict reporting on issues and concerns considered sensitive by the government.

Rane Pioneer of Change 150th Birth Anniversary of award celebration Kasturba Gandhi @ Thakkar Bapa Vidyalaya Samithi

Harijan Sevak Sangh” Tamil Nadu Unit and Thakkar Bapa Vidyalaya Samithi celebrated the seventh month of the year long celebrations of the 150th Birth Anniversary of Kasturba Gandhi on 11th November 2018 at 4.15 PM. The program began with offering floral tributes to Kasturba Gandhi. The Topic for Discussion was “Women And Nutrition” “\ÔπÚD ª‚¶flƒ›mD”. Ms. Anitha Rajagopalan , Nutritionist talked about nutrition needed for women. She mentioned that food, based on our culture and heritage is the best for us, which our forefathers consumed, based on the climatic conditions and still suits our body. Even

Chappathi is not our traditional food and is not compulsory to keep us healthy and the fast foods that are in vogue now need to be avoided. Refined foods such as white rice, oil , sugar are not healthy . Palm jaggery could be used as a substitute for white sugar. She also advised not to miss breakfast as that is the most important meal of the day as it stimulates the brain and keeps us active throughout the day. If one consumes millets then there should be an equal proportion of body exercise. All food from nature in the raw form such as groundnuts, coconut would be healthier.

“Kanji” taken for breakfast should be thicker. Usually in functions fruit salads are taken as dessert but in reality fruits should be consumed 20 minutes before food. he Indian Captain Virat Kohli’s recent comments about asking a fan to “leave India” has apparently not gone too well with the public. The Indian Captain got himself into fresh controversy after a video of him went viral on social media. It shows Kohli saying that “those who prefer English and Australian batsmen should not live in India.” Kohli’s “ leave India” comment has unearthed the following debates and implications: z Sport, similar to other entertainments like good music and movies, is universal in nature and is beyond language and geographical barriers. One cannot limit one’s passion and interest for a game within the geographical and political boundaries of a nation. z What Kohli failed to understand is the fact that there could be any number of reasons for a fan to follow a particular player irrespective of his nationality, apart from his talent in the given discipline. z It has been brought to public knowledge in the past that one of Kohli’s diehard fan is from Pakistan. Kohli has so many universal cricket fans across nations. They follow him blindly for his extraordinary cricket skills irrespective of his nationality or their nationality. z V irat Kohli’s most favourite cricketers of this generation is his teammate in the RCB team, the great A.B. De Villiers. AB is one cricketer Virat respects the most for his extraordinary talent on the cricket field. Of course, AB is not an Indian. z As an ardent cricket fan across generations, one must learn to enjoy the grit of a Gavaskar, grace of a Zaheer Abbas, style of a G.R. V iswanath, left handed elegance of a David Gower, power of a Vivian Richards, effectiveness of an Allan Border, fighting spirits of a Javed Miandad, class of a Martin Crowe and the flair of a Mahela Jayawardene. Similarly one loves an Anil Kumble as much as a Muralidharan and a Shane Warne. In all these cases, the nationality of the cricketer doesn’t matter. z One of the greatest moments in cricket happened in the IndiaPakistan Test match in Chennai in 1999 where the

crowd gave a standing ovation to the Pakistan team after they defeated India narrowly in India. Even the Pakistan players were surprised by the reaction of the Chennai crowd. The Indian team never felt bad about the standing ovation accorded to Pakistan team. In fact one of the Indian players expressed his happiness that the crowd acted with such grace. Here the highly knowledgeable Chennai crowd couldn’t be termed as unpatriotic. That day they have proved to the World that Cricket was beyond boundaries. z The IPL is a typical case of a foreign talent being exhibited, appreciated and followed. We have witnessed in the IPL the Kolkata crowd supporting Shoaib Akhtar bowling against Sachin Tendulkar. The same crowd which supports Kohli vehemently whenever he plays for India goes against him, when he is up against Dhoni’s CSK. The same crowd expects Kohli to fail against an otherwise unpopular Shane Watson. There the loyalty shifts to another player and another team which cannot be faulted. z If you take the case of the other sports like a Football or a Tennis, there are very few Indian stars to follow for an Indian fan in which case the Indian fans get attracted and are left with no other option except to follow a Ronaldo, a Messi or a Neymar or a Roger Fedder or a Nadal or a Novak Djokovic. Such fans cannot be branded antinational. z With the Women’s Cricket gaining popularity In India in recent times, some of the Indian fans adore a Mithali Raj as much as a V irat Kohli or a Harmanpreet Kaur as much as a Rohit Sharma or a Smriti Mandhana as much as a Kuldeep Yadav. Here the gender has nothing to do with the loyalty of the fans. z The background of a Cricketer also plays a crucial role in his gaining

popularity. The typical case is M.S. Dhoni. Coming from an Indian middle class family, he served as a railway employee from 2001 to 2003. Against this background, Dhoni became the only Captain to have won all the ICC trophies, that is to say, Test mace, ODI World Cup, World T20 and Champions Trophy. A truly inspirational story to follow for any Indian, leave alone an Indian cricket fan. z On the same lines of Dhoni’s sentiments, the most popular cricket teams in recent times is none other than Afghanistan. They have shown tremendous fighting spirit on the field while their country is in turmoil. A typical fan gets attracted to such heroics and starts following a team like Afghanistan irrespective of his nationality. z An ardent cricket fan wouldn’t wish to watch matches involving India alone. Though the Indian team might be his favourite team, he would still love to connect himself to matches played elsewhere in the world involving a South Africa Vs Australia, England Vs Sri Lanka or a Pakistan Vs New Zealand. The fan is at absolute liberty to follow his favourite cricketer from any of these countries. z We have witnessed in the past sport uniting nations who are on war path. The West Indies nation comprises of so many tiny islands in the Caribbean. But the one common denominator that unites all these small islands is the game called cricket. To conclude, Kohli got more irked by the comment of the fan who called Kohli an “over rated batsman” which led to his adverse “leave the country” remark. But in this age of social media, the fan, the big boss, has every right to express his feeling about a player as much as one expresses his views about a movie or a musical number. The all-important fan is at liberty to choose his own favourite player irrespective of the country he belongs to. Any adverse comment made by a celebrity against such actions would only cause more damage to the reputation of the celebrity. The players have the responsibility of being the ambassadors of their country and their conduct should be in tune to their responsibility. For once, Kohli got it wrong and played a false stroke.
