Did you know? April 21 - Today in History! April 21 is observed as Civil Service Day in India. To take the civil services exam, one needs to be older than 21 and younger than 30 on August 1 of the year of examination. Stats show that over 9,00,000 candidates apply for the exam that only holds around 900 vacancies. The civil services exam is the toughest one in India with a success rate of 0.1 to 0.3 percent. As of 2010, the number of bureaucrats in India is even less than 50,000.

The Princess of Hill Stations, Kodaikanal is perfect for kids. The starshaped lake in the city is a mustvisit as are the various parks and waterfalls around; boating, horse riding and cycling are popular activities. You can trek to the forest nearby as these are small treks easily trailed by kids. In Ooty, visit the Botanical Gardens and Doddabetta Peak, with amazing views overlooking the valley below. Also visit the Pykara Lake and

the cascading Pykara Falls. You must also pay a visit to the wax and sand museum. A ride on the toy train is highly recommended if you are planning a trip to Ooty with your kids. Make sure you get your fill of the famous Ooty

Shimla

chocolates before you leave! Shimla & Manali, Himachal Pradesh The British made Shimla their summer capital for a reason – the pretty little town is perfect for a holiday. The Mall Road and the Ooty & Kodaikanal

Ridge have several shops and restaurants. Christ Church on the Ridge is also quite impressive. Kufri and Chail are the nearby places you can pay visit while you are in Shimla. In Manali, there are many easy treks that kids can do, not to mention riding a yak! The Hadimba Devi temple is also worth visiting. Make an excursion to Rohtang Pass, which connects further to the Lahaul & Spiti valleys and is open between May and November. If you’re lucky you may just encounter some snow here. You can also go for river rafting in Beas river with your kids as there are fewer rapids and is completely safe for the kids. A ropeway ride and a

horse ride at Solang Valley is also recommended whileyou are in Manali. Munnar & Thekkady, Kerala Munnar is most famous for its never ending tea gardens. Apart from visiting tea plantations, head to Echo Point and Lakkam Waterfalls where you can go for nature trails and treks. The Mattupetty Dam is great for boating. In Thekkady, visit the Periyar Lake and Sanctuary, which is a tiger and elephant reserve. You can also go on a boat cruise here. Democratic principles stifled

W

hen we achieved independence from the yokes of centuries old British Raj which ruled with all oppresiveness with no liberty, all people in the country were very happy and joyful and heave a sigh of liberty. Then Inda S. Ganapathy 7358768630 was declared to be a secular and a democratic republic. The constitution guarantees equal status and opportunities to all the people irrespective of caste, creed and colour. But in reality, do we get it? The people are silently suffering and there is no transparency in the functioning of the government. which stands for the total welfare of it's subjects. The political parties won the elections by giving various promises but mostly unfulfilled false promises. This is the story for the past 70 years. With the result, there is eroding faith in the democratic systems which is very suicidal and a dangerous path. First and foremost in the system is election funding to political parties for the conduct of elections which is a major source of black money and another one is ill-gotten wealth of the contestants used in elections. The Election Commisiion of India fixes certain limit where the parties and contestants should spend and submit the list of income and expenditure to them after allowing some time. But most of them do not file returns unto the time prescribed and violate all rules to the wind, spending beyond the limit which creates black money in the system and the vicious cycle goes on for ever. Whereas the government fixes responsibility upon an individual to file necessary returns every year for the income earned during the year beyond a certain limt before the period assigned to pay taxes or otherwise will be penalised and even sentenced for a brief period for the late submission with any wrong datas.. The same norm and yardstick should also equally apply to all political parties in filing necessary returns declaring their income, received through donations from individuals and corporates. Already a cap appears that any sum above Rupees 2000 should be declared about the contributor's identity with effect from 2017-2018, will be a mockery and be whittled down by undisclosed income by the political parties. Big parties like Congress and BJP file their audited reports and connected papers beyond the prescribed time limits and are not penalised like individuals for delay in submissions which is very much against the democratic principles, is unjust and unfair. BJP's political funding income rose from Rupees 570 crore in 2015-2016 to Rs 1034 crore in 2016-2017 which is a real surge where Rs 464 cr are from undisclosed sources. They had declared details pertaining to Rs570cr as donations over Rs20000. The congress party is yet to submit it's donor list. Eveh the election bonds face huge transparency deficit. The Official Information Act 1980 states that donations made to political parties are protected from disclosures including all contributions can not be supplied. This is gross unfair and unjust that all political parties are treated on par like individuals and companies in declaring incomes. In a democracy, every citizen has a right to know from where the political parties are getting funds and the voters can not be denied information. This will be highly useful im making decision to which political party to vote. It is imperative that all donations received should be accounted and published. Whar is the problem in disclosing it? Why secracy should be maintained? All fundings should be transparent. The government should also allot funds to political parties from its own kitty specified for this purpose and totally eliminate public donations to the political parties over a period. This step may be a beginning but it will boost the morale of the public. The Official Information Act should be amended forthwith and donations received from individuals and corporates should be made public. This will definitely strengthen the edifices of democracy and confidence of the public in the system to wipe off black money and corruption altogether in the country and also pave way for curtailing inflation to some extent.

Is the ICICI Bank's Board above board? It is distressing to note that ICICI bank's, being the second largest Private Bank in the country, it's NPA rose to Rs3250 cr being bad loans given to Videocon Industries Ltd, promoted by Venugopal Dhoot. The bank's C.E.O and M.D Chanda Kochar who is in global powerful list and a top banker in the banking circles has a term of upto 31st March 2019. In the meantime, it is alleged that favouritism was shown and also the question of conflict of interest raises. in the commercial activities of both Chanda Kochar's husband Deepak Kochar and her brother-in-law Rajiv Kochar. Already the preliminary investigations have commenced by the investigave agencies like CBI about the business connecions of Deepak Kochar and Dhoot which will be spelt out soon. Ishavasya Upanishad

Ishavashya Upinishad is the first one in 10 Upanishads which relates to Yajur Veda. It has 18 mantras in it. It emphasises Brahma Vidhya (widom on Brahman) is the Gnana kanda. ' Hari Om' mantra is chanted for God Vishnu who is worshipped by all people. It is paripoorna (absolute) Brahman. The Brahman is absolute (fullness). The world prapanja is also absolute. It is manifested from fullness. The remaider is also fullness. Hence, God is absolute, everywhere. The whole world is created by Him alone. The zero remains if we deduct one feom one. In the same manner, if we lit a match stick and with it lit up another stick, both sticks emit the same amount of flame or light. The flame in the first stick i not reduced by the process of liting another stick. The reason is fire inherent and intrinsic in both the sticks. At first, Brahman was alone but it was absolute. Then he created the

ceived from Mauritius for Deepak's company NuPower Renewables Pvt Ltd. CBI also questions Rajiv Kochar who is doing debt-restructuring work for erraneous corporate borrowers of ICICI bank including Videocon Industries. The rating agency Finch has raised confidence issues in the bank's board. The Board at it's meeting on 28th March 2018 has given clean chit and reckons that the CEO has not done any wrong and reposed faith and confidence in her, further adding that the board is collectively responsible for any acts done. Moreover employees morale is equally vital for which the Top Management and Board are duty bound to explain the real situation prevailing in the bank to further it's confidence building measures and wipe out doubts and fears.among them.

eventhough it's board supported in full and protected it's CEO Shikha Sharma for the bank's functioning in a right way, upon the insistance of RBI which gauged her functioning, curtailed her 4th term of office and now it should end on 31st Dec 2018. In the case of ICICI, it is said that the bank already has $200 billions in stressed loans. Eventh the board reposed confidence in the CEO except some directors, it is imperative that she should immediately quit the bank voluntarily until the investigations are completed to find the real merits of the case rather the government or RBI took a decision in asking her to quit which will be a bitter medicine and unpalatable, to save her reputation in the bank.

In the case of Axis Bank,

The Board is not above board for its actions. S. Ganapathy

whole world and all are his manifestations. It is like the spider's web which is both Paramatma and Jivatma. At first, there was no name or form to god and people worshipped the nature only. Names and forms are later creations of mankind. The vedas has two compartments in it. The first one is relating to mundane worldly pleasures which is derived through pujas, homams and yagnas upon particular god. This is called Karma Kandam or Purva Kandam. This is unsuitable and immeterial for pure sanyasis who wish to abdicate or abstain or desert from this worl Guru teach us thr Brahma Vidhya. We, by doing various karmas to attain big titles, job, money. fame and names etc are effemaryor temporary in nature which is good only for leading a material life. These karmas make you lure, only more attached towards worldly objects resulting to take multitudes of births, The same Veda Purusha prescribes, illuustratrs and ascertains the karmas that make you sath, clean

and ever truthful and how to live a life, unattached without any desires. The way to attain to Brahman is to ward off evil thoughts from your mind live a moral unattached life to woldly objects and not aspiring for the fruits of your actions whether it will fetch good or bad. You have to do your karma as enunciated in Vedas or duties to be performed as per the four varnashramas which is good for the world to keep unity and nothing less. There is no high or low birth in society. All are equal an all disparity is only manmade. This is very much illustrated by God Krishna himself an Bhagwad Gita. Hence Vedas or Upanishads are supreme injunctions to keep the world in order, morally and spiritually to live a happy, peaceful and ever contented life. Vedas are not written but told by Great Rishis out of their own profound experiences and tested truths. We need not go again to test its veracity and therby waste our shorter span of life. Only thing what we should do is to follow what is ordained in the Vedas and live accordingly. (To be continued)
