CSDA in the next generation special survey The Concrete Sawing & Drilling Association was formed in 1972 by a group of visionaries that desired to help advance the interests and provide for the future of the sawing and drilling community. Their organizational efforts were successful and today the 18 charter members who formed the association have now been joined by 500 companies with members around the world. As with many endeavours you cannot rest on past success and have to constantly reinvent yourself.

CSDA has changed dramatically over its 38 years and this has lead to much of the growth in membership. Today CSDA offers members safety, training and promotional programs to help them succeed in business. But the current situation is different today as many of the original founders have retired or sold their business and their dedication and way of conducting business is being replaced by a younger generation of people with a different focus.

The CSDA Past Presidents have been meeting at the annual convention for the past few years and agenda topics discussed include how an association like CSDA can interest the younger generation to participate. These past leaders saw in their sons and daughters a different mentality when operating the business.

A different approach was needed and one that did not have an influence of the older generation directing the efforts of the younger generation. It is clear the business and social trends have changed since the association was established, together with massive advancements in equipment, technology and communication methods.

The CSDA Next Generation group was formed with total autonomy to decide how they wanted to meet and communicate. My daughter Erin who recently started working with us was given the task to organize this group of

younger people.

Two meetings have been held in conjunction with the World of Concrete and the CSDA Convention. The older generation, including myself, has not attended the meetings. The group has been quite active. At the World of Concrete the group held an organizational meeting to develop a set of goals and objectives. Topics includes what does CSDA need to do to attract a new generation of company owners and how to identify new technologies and how they can be utilized now and in the future to keep this group active in CSDA. Based upon the response at the initial meeting a second meeting was held at the 2010 CSDA Convention. Discussion items from this meeting included how contractor members value the safety and training materials and classes provided by CSDA as one of the most beneficial reasons to join and how the annual convention is the best way to network. In addition, the group has developed a purpose statement, “The purpose of the CSDA Next Generation group is to promote the Association through the next generation. It will continue to grow the association while serving the needs and wants of the younger generation with the goal of continuing the excellence of the Concrete Sawing & Drilling Association.”

While this Next Gen group is still in its formative stage, it is hoped that by listening to the views and opinions of a new generation of industry professionals, and determining what this potential group of industry leaders feels is most important from an association membership, CSDA can increase its longevity and continue to promote the use of professional specialty sawing and drilling contractors and their methods for many years to come.

Volvo supports AEM’s construction challenge The US Association of Equipment Manufacturers and Volvo Construction Equipment have signed an agreement making Volvo the presenting sponsor for AEM’s annual Construction Challenge competition. The challenge is a creative problem solving programme that educates young people about the value of construction industry careers, as well as industry contributions to improved quality of life. Under the agreement, Volvo will be the exclusive official presenting sponsor of the challenge competition for 2010-2014. The AEM Construction Challenge presented by Volvo includes the challenge finals at the triennial Conexpo-Con/Agg show 2011 and 2014, the challenge programme within Destination ImagiNation’s yearly Global Finals, and regional rally qualifying events.

“The prosperity of our industry very much depends on the availability of a qualified workforce,” says Volvo Construction Equipment North America president Göran Lindgren. “We at Volvo are committed to supporting efforts that develop the workforce of tomorrow. We look forward to working with AEM on promoting the value of construction and the construction industry in communities across North America.”

AEM President Dennis Slater on “Jobs Report” US Association of Equipment Manufacturers President Dennis Slater recently commented on the subject “Job Report”. Here his comments in full: “The unemployment rate may have officially dipped just below 10%, but for many industries that is little consolation.

Unemployment in the construction equipment industry is more than double the national average, but we can recapture these jobs with the right legislation.

What’s the solution?

Washington needs to focus on legislation for a multi-year, fully funded transportation infrastructure programme that would boost employment in the construction industry, including equipment manufacturers and dealers who sell the machinery and construction contractors who buy and use it.

The industry is not asking for the bailouts given to the auto industry or the financial services sector, but it is asking Congress to make the ‘highway bill’ reauthorization a priority.

Unfortunately, Congress has ‘kicked the issue down the road’ by passing two short-term extensions since the last bill expired in September 2009. The latest two-month extension expires on 28 February 2010, and it appears that the most likely Congressional action will be another extension, a move that does not create the market certainty to promote job growth or meaningful infrastructure improvement.

An information campaign called Start Us Up USA (http://www.startusupusa.com) has been underway since last fall and is being coordinated by the Association of Equipment Manufacturers) and the Associated Equipment Distributors, the nation’s two leading construction equipment industry trade groups. The campaign is based on facts provided

Major manufacturers commit to Conexpo Russia Exhibition space sales are now open for the Conexpo Russia in the CTT Moscow exhibition being held 1-5 June 2010 at the Crocus International Exhibition Centre in Moscow. Under the agreement Volvo will shift production to Savannah over time. The Volvo skid steers are not sold in Europe. JCB currently has a range of eight wheeled skid steers, including several wheeled models. A Volvo spokesman said that it was too early to say exactly which models would be available under the joint venture. The deal will give Volvo a range of models that it can sell worldwide, and also free up production capacity at its Brazilian facility where backhoes and other products are currently made. The Volvo spokesman said that workers at the Pederneiras facility would be reallocated to other products and that job losses would not result from the agreement with JCB. For JCB, the joint venture will provide additional volume for its Savannah facility at a time when production has been scaled back significantly as a result of the slowdown.

It is time again for Bauma, the global mega show for construction machinery and equipment. This time the show is expected to be even bigger in the number of exhibitors, exhibition space and visitors. PDi Magazine will be there in hall A1stand number 132.

Although we are in the middle of or coming out of the worst economic crisis in years the German exhibition Bauma does not pay any attention to that. It continues to grow and set new records of exhibitors, exhibition area and number of international visitors. If previous shows are anything to go by the number of visitors will also increase this time.

Bauma 2010 opens on Monday19 April and closes on Sunday 25 April and will be the biggest edition ever.

There are rumours that many companies are on the waiting list for exhibition space, even though Bauma has extended its exhibition area with two more temporary halls and more outdoor exhibition space. The exhibition space in total has been increased to 555,000 m?. It is estimated that more

then 3,000 companies will exhibit. More exhibitors and larger exhibition space is a result of growing interest from countries like China, Turkey and India. “In some cases we have received double the number of requests for exhibition space from these countries than in 2007,” says exhibition director Georg Moller.

Exhibitors from Europe, for example, Italy, Great Britain and the Netherlands, will again be taking the top slots in the international exhibitor ranking for Bauma.

All this is a strong indicator that the industry worldwide is looking forward with confidence to the leading world trade fair.

Prospects for the building and construction industry worldwide in 2010 Thanks to extensive government economic stimulus programmes, aimed to a considerable extent at the construction sector, activity in construction has picked up in most industrial and emerging countries than the economy as a whole. For 2010, but increasingly for 2011, it is expected that most countries will see a revival in activity in the building and construction sector.

Europe In Europe a slight fall of 1% in building production is still expected in 2010. But this is due solely to the poor development in commercial construction. Civil engineering, by contrast, is expected to grow by 2.7%, mainly because

of the extensive economic stimulus programmes in many member states of the EU. In 2011 building investment is predicted to expand by 2% Europe-wide, again driven by investment in civil engineering projects, contributing 3% growth. The slight downturn in overall production in 2010 is due to the negative effect from countries like Spain, Ireland, Finland and Portugal, where prices have fallen dramatically following the end of the boom in residential property. In the reform economies of Central Europe, however, growth in construction activity is set to expand by 6% as early as 2010, accelerating to 10% in 2011. The engine behind this growth will continue to be Poland.

Russia Russia has also been affected by the international economic crisis, coupled in this case with rapidly falling income for the state from energy exports, due to falling prices on the world market. Nevertheless building activity overall has stayed stable in 2009, a downturn of around 5% is, however, expected for 2010, followed in 2011 by modest growth.

USA At around EUR730 billion, the building and construction market in the US remained the most important in the world. Following a downturn in the current year, real GDP is expected to rise again in 2010, by 1.5%. This means the US is emerging from recession more quickly

e come! than generally expected. Following the severe drop in building production in 2007 to 2009, a slight increase is expected next year, picking up strength in 2011. Government building activity will increase, particularly in civil engineering projects, thanks to the economic stimulus programmes. New residential construction is expected to stabilise, while a more marked downturn is expected in commercial construction.

China Overall China is coming through the global economic crisis much better than the industrialised and emerging economies. Economic research institutes are expecting real GDP in China to grow by 8% in both 2009 and 2010.

In building investment the growth is likely to be slightly higher still, as the Chinese government is holding firmly to its ambitious investment programme in infrastructure.

The strong dynamism on the Chinese construction market is also expected to continue overall.

India The Indian construction market is not of the same size as other markets, with the level of investment in the industry in 2008 coming in at around EUR130 billion.

However its rate of growth was almost as impressive as that of China. Between 1998 and 2008 activity in building and construction rose by around 140% and this dynamic pace is set to continue. According to forecasts by the economic

research institutes real economic output in India is set to expand by 6% in both 2009 and 2010. In the current five year plan to 2012, around EUR330 billion is being invested in the expansion of the road and rail network, the construction of new sea ports and airports and in improving energy and water supplies. During this period growth in investment in construction is expected to reach around 10% per annum.

But what about demolition, recycling, concrete sawing and drilling, concrete floor grinding and polishing equipment and related products. PDi believes visitors to Bauma will not be disappointed. Most of the players will be there, this time with even bigger stands. Most of the manufacturers of concrete sawing and drilling, concrete floor grinding and polishing and all products related to these sectors you will, as usual be located in hall A1 or in the nearby halls, but demolition and recycling equipment is more spread out .

Husqvarna’ new Atlas Copco’s vibro-reduced hydraulic breakers electric wall saw Atlas Copco’s new four model range of handheld hydraulic breakers have improved vibration characteristics. “On the spring-mounted handles we have improved the vibration characteristics by suspending the heavy weight handle in a dampened pivot pin, decreasing the vibration emissions,” says handheld hydraulic products product line manager Jan Byrresen. “We transferred this solution from our successful range of pneumatic breakers and achieved hereby higher operator comfort also on our hydraulic line of handheld breaker. Very often vibro-reduction is achieved by reducing performance. Atlas Copco breakers stay at the same high performance level but reduce vibrations significantly.”

Handheld hydraulic breakers have just two moving parts. There is minimal wear and very few parts to service as moving parts are running in oil. “An ideal tool for the rental industry, since it is easy to own and easy to work with,” says

Jan Byrresen. “Our new range combines high efficiency and performance with better operator comfort. The low weight and reduction of vibration have been the key targets in developing this new line.”

Husqvarna’s new demolition robot DXR 250 to be followed by one more Husqvarna has added the remotely controlled demolition robot DXR 250 to the larger DXR 310 launched in 2009. “We have developed our new robot because there is a demand for a machine in this size class. The DXR 250 is compact and flexible to operate. It only weighs 1620 kg and has an output of 18.5 kW. There is also a 22 kW option. It is the most powerful machine in its size class in the market,” says Husqvarna Construction Products demolition equipment business manager Thomas Nilsson.

Like the DXR 310, the DXR 250 robot is simple to service and maintain. The new remote control system with Bluetooth technology is easy to use, with a clear plain text display that indicates when various servicing is required. The control system is adapted to handle demolition environments. The DXR 250 is suitable for working with minor demolition and sensitive environments in applications such as the processing industry, interior work and demolition work in

restricted spaces, such as pile driving.

The new robot was unveiled at the World of Concrete in USA in February and deliveries started the same month. Husqvarna will show the DXR 250 in their booth at Bauma. Additionally another robot, the DXR 140, will be launched during the spring.

Husqvarna’s new electric wall saw, the WS 482 HF, allows cutting and drilling contractors to work faster and more e f f i c i e n t l y.

The latest WS 482 HF, is based on the same technology as the WS 440 HF launched last year but can hold up to 1.6m diameter blades and is operated by radio remote control.

It has a new two-speed gearbox combined with variable speed transmission, which allows the optimum speed to be set according to blade diameter, blade type and cutting material. “The WS 482 is incredibly powerful. You get a total of 19 kW to the blade shaft with a 32 amp fuse, despite the saw weighing only 28 kg. A great advantage is that if only 16 amps are available, the WS 482 still delivers 9 kW. No other electric wall saw on the market today can do this,” says Husqvarna Construction Products construction equipment product manager Lars Gustafsson.

The WS 482 HF was developed to make operators’ work easier and more efficient.

The saw is of modular construction, making it easy to hang on the wall and transport. It is possible to cut on both sides of the track.

Its direction of rotation can be selected so that the water always sprays in the desired direction, irrespective of which side of the track you saw on.

The PP 480 HF is the power pack for the WS 482. It weighs only 23 kg, is compact and very easy to transport. The WS 482 HF powered by the PP 480 will be launched at the end of the year.

ALLU presents new products at Bauma Screener Crusher attachment manufacturer ALLU will use Bauma to present the complete D series for fine screening, crushing, mixing, stabilising and sorting on inside stand Hall B3/323 and on outside stand N914/1.

The new ALLU D series will be extensive, providing solutions from the smallest skid steer loaders, up to the larger 45t excavators and 30t wheeled loaders. The new range offers a complete solution of material processing from fine screening to crushing and blending as well as for soil remediation and stabilisation.

Also present at Bauma will be the new ALLU Pressure Feeder Mobile for feeding dry binders. It is mounted

on a trailer that enables easy transportation. The system has two 10m3 tanks, powerful engine and capacity to stabilise up to 150m3/h with a maximum feeding distance up to 200m from the feeder. The more powerful engine and compressor, also makes the

ALLU PFM suitable for feeding column stabilisation piling rigs.

One of the ALLU PFM’s features is its ability to blend to different powders. Not only is it a feeder for stabilisation projects, but it can also be used as a mobile powder blender for many other industries. The ALLU PFM is registered for road transportation and it can be moved like an ordinary trailer from one site to another.

Numerous tests have been carried out to date and the first ALLU PFM was delivered in December 2009.

Chicago Pneumatic has launched the new CP 0112, CP 0112 S and CP 0112 EX handheld pneumatic breakers that offer a 15% increase in performance compared to the previous CP 0111 series.

“The most important change that we have made on these wellproven breakers is an upgraded valve system,” says CP handheld pneumatics product line manager Jan Ohlson. “This leads to 15% more performance for all three breaker models.”

Apart from that the new CP 0112 range builds on proven features of the previous range. The forgings are made of alloy steel to raise durability. The four-bolt back head withstands rugged use and the integral

The CP 0112 series are the lightest handheld breakers in the Chicago Pneumatic range weighing 13.5-16 kg. They are especially well suited to situations where easy handling and weight restrictions are important issues.

New CC 650 CombiCutter with hydraulic rotation device Atlas Copco will introduce the new hydraulic CombiCutter CC 650 with hydraulic rotation device at Bauma.

With its service weight of 630kg the new CC 650 is a match for carriers of the 6-12t weight class. “A lot of changes are taking place in this particular excavator class,” says silent demolition tools product line manager Wolfgang Hohn. “We recognize a clear trend towards increasingly flexible carrier units which are already furnished in the shops with various systems suitable for different attachments.”

Atlas Copco’s new CC 6000 CombiCutter Atlas Copco will launch its new CC 6000 CombiCutter at Bauma. Weighing 6.5t it is the heaviest cutter in the line and is designed for carrier units of the 58 to 85t class.

“With the CC 6000 we are accommodating the trend towards bigger demolition excavators,” says Silent Demolition Tools Product Line Manager Wolfgang Hohn. “Only five years ago carrier units in excess of 60 tons were something special. But this has changed. With the CC 6000 we are offering the right kind of attachment for this class of carriers.”

New FRD FX breakers on display at Bauma

New designed monobloc cylinder without through bolts, easy exchangeable wear parts, more power at lower noise levels, are in the latest FX breakers which FRD will show at Bauma.

In cooperation with the Technical University of Tokyo, FRD has reduced the new breakers’ noise levels. A complete new development of the impact mechanism minimizes the discharge of vibration to the excavator, as well as reducing the vibration stress to operators.

Something completely new FRD Europe will show the new excavator mounted XCENTRIC® Ripper at Bauma the company has developed in cooperation with the Spanish engineering and manufacturing company Grado Cero, which specialises in excavator mounted attachments.

Just recently Grado Cero has developed a revolutionary attachment the “XCENTRIC® Ripper” to do excavation and demolition in less time, for lower

cost and with a minimum of noise.

The XCENTRIC® Ripper, with a patented reaction power accumulation technology, is more productive then any hydraulic hammer available in the market on 85% of applications, the company claims FRD. The company also claims it is between two to four time more productive on 50% of job applications. The Ripper means it can work in the most severe conditions in tunnels, foundations and under water without making any special modifications. The XCENTRIC® Ripper will be available in a wide range of models, with 10 different sizes for excavators from 2 to 85 t. Ramtec increases Robi product range The Finnish demolition equipment attachment manufacturer Ramtec Oy, has increased its product range and will display several new machines at Bauma. The new ranges, marketed under the Robi brand, include multi-processors, pulverizers and cuttercrushers. At Bauma, Ramtec plans to display a CG35 crusher grapple, a MP19 multiprocessor, a DG15 demolition grapple and an MM104 screening bucket.

The Robi CG patented crusher grapple is an efficient excavator attachment for crushing, pulverizing, sorting and loading of demolished materials. The multi-purpose Robi CG can be easily adapted to the required application by changing the jaw tool, a crushing tooth, a pulverizing plate or a loading cover.

The crusher grapple is suited for crushing wood, bricks or concrete buildings down to 350 mm, and for sorting and loading demolition debris. It pulverizes concrete and also separates rebar from concrete. In scrap yard applications the CG can be used for sorting and loading different types of waste materials.

There are three models in the CG crusher grapple range. These are the CG20r, CG35r and CG50r. The letter ‘r’ stands for hydraulic rotation, which is a standard

feature in the CG series. They weigh 1.8, 2.6 and 3.5 t respectively. The MM104 is a new patented screening bucket that can be used for screening, crushing and loading various types of materials, including soil, wood, concrete, bricks and glass, and other waste materials. It can be easily mounted on an excavator or a wheel loader. The MM series includes three models the MM104, MM154 and MM254 and they weigh 1.7, 2.3 and 2.9 t respectively.

The new MP range of Multiprocessors is aimed at a multitude of demolition tasks. The MP19 at the show is designed for primary applications and in particular for crushing concrete and cutting reinforced structures. Its operating weight is 2.27t with a maximum jaw opening of 859mm, maximum cutting force of 2,800 kN and maximum crushing force of 1,350 kN. The Robi DG demolition and sorting grapple series attachments include 5 models of which the DG15 will be shown. The DG grapples are specially designed for light demolition projects, such as wooden buildings, bricks, concrete without rebar, and for sorting and loading demolition debris in scrap yard applications.

Husqvarna launches Eurodima new deep cutter launches

Husqvarna’s new K760 Cut-n-Break is a versatile all-round cutting and drilling machine, which can handle cuts of up to 400 mm, with a lower tool cost than a diamond chain saw. The K 760 Cut-n-Break is the follow-up to the popular K 650 Cut-n-Break, Husqvarna’s first machine with the revolutionary technique. It will be available in the spring. The technique and performance are significantly enhanced with the new cutter. The biggest innovation is an entirely new engine body.

The K 760 Cut-n-Break is equipped with Husqvarna’s low emission X-Torq® 3.7 kW engine, which makes the machine more powerful while being better on the environment at the same time. More power means that the blade cuts through the concrete with more resilience and consistency. There is an improved ergonomic design in the form of a more robust front handle, making the grip more comfortable. An effective vibration dampening system and sound damping makes the machine more comfortable to use.

The K 760 Cut-n-Break diamond blades boast a new construction with higher strength, which means they are more resistant to thermal strain. The double, specially developed 230 mm blades grant higher cutting speed and power. The areas of application for the K 760 Cut-n-Break are window, door, and ventilation openings where overcutting is to be avoided, grooves for cabling and crack renovation.

With the Cut-n-Break method the contractor can cut in stages through walls of up to 400 mm thick. Each cut can be made to a maximum depth of 65 mm. As the cutter is equipped with twin blades, a core is formed in the saw cut. The core can easily be broken off, using the accompanying breaking tool. When the core has been broken off, the cutting is repeated until the desired cutting depth is reached; 400 mm maximum.

The new blade guard series Safe Guard from EDT Eurodima features the most convenient characteristics, such as increased stability, safety, lightweight materials and easy handling.

The improvement of the blade guard was an intensive project for the research and development team. In collaboration with sales staff and market information, requirements were analysed and transferred into the best solution. This involved the material specification being changed to more lightweight material and a different thickness. This and the new construction made it possible to lower the weight by up to 45 %, which improved the ease of handling for users. The Safe Guard rigidity is obtained by the special construction of steel sheet profiles, aluminium plates, and brackets with high strength steel.

The tests and the first uses in the field were successful. The blade guard for a diamond blade of 1.6m diameter weighs only 16 kg, instead of 29 kg.

The smaller diameter guards are also easy manageable, weighing 12 kg for a 1.2m diameter blade, and 9.5 kg for an 800 mm diameter blade. The high frequency braxx system has been extended by the new generation Safe Guard and new model BC321. It is comparable to the BC320, but features some major advantages: • Improved automatic operation makes work easier.

The diamond tool specialists in the EDT Eurodima technology centre have been working on the next generation of segments, Eurix. Not only is the innovative Duramant quality comprised, but also the

The EZiDIG sensor constantly scans the ground for signals emitted by buried services.

Atlas Copco will use Bauma to introduce the new hydraulic breaker model HB 3100 with PowerAdapt and optimized box design.

PowerAdapt is a system, which shuts down the hydraulic breaker in case the oil pressure is too high.

“This is for example useful when the hydraulic breaker is used on different carrier units,” says medium and heavy breakers product line manager Torsten Treger. “Hydraulic breakers can generally be hydraulically overloaded if the carrier’s oil pressure has the wrong setting. In order to ensure that our customers can make full use of the equipment in terms of efficiency and power, we have equipped the entire range of heavy-duty hydraulic breakers with PowerAdapt.”

With an improper carrier oil pressure setting, conventional pressure relief valves used in hydraulic breakers continuously drain oil into the tank and waste energy. This affects the efficiency and profitability of the equipment.

The improved hydraulic breaker guide system provides a better stability and resis-

tance. Treger adds. “A new retaining bar provides a better protection especially in the lower part of the hydraulic breaker which has to take a lot of wear and tear,” adds Treger.

“The service window and the recesses for the lateral slewing screw couplings have been reinforced. The Non-Dust version of the HB 3100 is furnished with the all-round wear protection which all of the dust versions of the HB series of hydraulic breakers already feature.“ With its service weight of approximately 3.1t the HB 3100 can be attached to carriers of the 30 to 52t class. All proven features of Atlas Copco’s heavy-duty hydraulic breaker line are also found in the new HB 3100, which replaces the HB 3000.

Husqvarna launches the K 3000 Husqvarna is launching its K 3000 Wet, an electric power cutter that allows cutting indoors without dust. The K 3000 Wet is equipped with a wet cutting kit that regulates the flow of water to spray a concentrated stream of water onto the blade. The amount of water is sufficient to bind the dust without soaking it. “We know that this is an eagerly awaited machine. The power cutters previously available on the market were quite expensive, so that many users modified their saws in order to cut with water indoors. There is now an EU-approved solution to this problem” says Husqvarna Construction Products power cutters

The wet cutting kit, which forms part of the Husqvarna Dust Extinguisher System, contains a regulating valve that limits the amount of water to 0.4l/min. The K 3000 Wet has the same ergonomic properties as Husqvarna’s other electric power cutters. The handles are located a convenient distance from each other to ensure greater control and reduce the load. The drive belt is completely sealed, keeping the cutting dust out and reducing wear.

Demarec’s new dedicated demolition line The Dutch manufacturer of demolition and recycling equipment Demarec will at Bauma to introduce the first model of a complete new generation of shears the Demarec DRS-75. The new Demarec 360° rotating shear is suitable for 45-65 t excavators and for 60-80 t excavators when fitted to the boom.

Key objective behind the development of the new shears was to realise powerful shears with a low weight. This has resulted in an exceptional weight/force ratio of about 6.9t and a maximum shear force of over 10,500 kN. With these specifications, the DRS-75 is in the top segment of the market. Characteristic of the new concept is its compact design whereby a single cylinder with branched axle journals is mounted in the

frame. This concept, together with the large diameter of the housing, results in a powerful short cylinder. The special cylinder, with protected piston rod, is fitted with a speed valve. The movable jaw offers excellent stability during cutting thanks to guidance frames fitted before and behind the hinge. Demarec has used this tried and tested concept in its MQP model with steel jaw.

With Bauma looming closer and bigger every day, the industry is slipping into high gear. The triennial fair is usually a feast of engineering creativity and cutting-edge innovation, which neither suppliers nor contractors want to miss out on. This year’s show promises to be as sumptuous as ever, despite the continued economic meltdown. As manufacturers are preparing to unveil their latest masterpieces, PDi looks at what is on offer in the field of core drilling.

Husqvarna’s bag of inventions The Swedish manufacturer keeps putting out new products at breathtaking speed. In the drilling segment alone, it has recently launched three new motors the DM230, DM280 and DM340 that together with the DS150, DS250 and DS450 drill stands, provide a solution to any core drilling task. Equipped with an ergonomic handle, compact and lightweight the DM230 can be mounted on a drill rig or used in held hand mode. All motors feature the Softstart, Smartstart and Elgard electronic functions that facilitate start up and drilling, and protect the motor from overloading.

The vacuum base plate and wheels options make it easier for the operator to set up and move the rig around the site.

Innovative drilling solution from Norton-Nimbus Norton-Nimbus has announced a new drilling solution for nuclear demolition and eco-sensitive jobs, which excludes the use of water. As water collection can be a major problem on those projects, engineers at NortonNimbus have come up with an idea to use foam as a cooling agent. Once developed for wire sawing by the company’s research and development centre in Japan, this approach has now been successfully transferred to core drilling. The foam drilling set up consists of a tank, where water and an eco-friendly foaming agent is mixed. The foam mixture is routed by a compressor through valves and motor to the drill bit to cool them during operation. The spent foam is then vacuumed and reduced back to water. Foam drilling has a number of advantages compared to the conventional technique.

Much less slurry is generated because the volume of water required for foam forming is just one tenth of the regular volume. There is no need to protect the site before or clean it after the drilling, and there is less impact on the environment. The invention has been put up for the Bauma innovation award.

Shibuya’s light touch Shibuya will present its new hand-held drill motor RH1532. This compact and powerful model comes with an electronic control device and three LED indicators. The green and red ones are designed to help the operator stay within the rated power range, and to prevent the motor from overheating. The electronic control device counts the accumulated operation time.

When the regular maintenance is needed, the orange lamp lights up. The motor’s other features include a three speed gearbox and three position water connection valve. The RH1532 does not have a trigger lock button to prevent an unintentional lock of the trigger. The rig is notable for its excellent user friendliness, a result of the effective two way communication between the manufacturer and customers. Feather light NINO, which weighs a mere 8 kg, is equipped with roller guides enabling smooth movement of t h e feeder. The rig stand can be inclined up to a 45° tilt for comfortable angle drilling. Pentruder HF systems Tractive, a developer of Pentruder high-frequency systems is putting the finishing touches to its new line of single and three phase drill motors. The brushless water cooled devices, with electronically controlled spindle, have constant power over the entire speed range. All models are completely watertight, making them suitable for overhead jobs.

The new motors have been developed with a view to being compatible with modular concrete cutting system based on Pentruder’s wall saw track. They can also be adapted to Pentruder’s MD1 drilling system. Optionally, the motors can be supplied with a computer controlled feed system. When complete with the four speed MG41 gearbox, spindle unit, base plate and a carriage with automatic feed, the motor turns into a high performance core drilling system. The system is powered by an electric motor, which is fastened on to the stand with just a hand crank thanks to the integrated quickchange plate. Four replaceable profiled strips on the column allow for easy movement of the carriage, which results in smooth and vibration free drilling. Reduced wear of the column is another advantage of this design, since the strips preclude direct contact between it and the carriage. HS300 will be shown at Bauma, along with Hydro-Tec’s other products.

Conclusion Manufacturers seem to be shifting their focus to building smaller and more universal machines. Almost every player has widened its range of versatile hand held motors applicable for all kinds of drilling in almost any construction material. Drill rigs are becoming lighter and more flexible and their design more compact and ergonomic.

The second trend that has transpired is making all-in-one modular systems. Meissner Kombi-System from Dr.Schulze and Tractive’s Pentruder range are the most telling examples of this. The time is coming when a contractor will only need to bring along to the site a small set of standardized components and parts to perform a most complex concrete drilling and sawing project. If the speed at which things happen in the fast-shrinking global village is anything to go by, it is just round the corner.

Some weeks ago PDi’s Editorin-Chief Jan Hermansson had the opportunity to sit down with members of the Tyrolit management. It was quite an offensive Austrian manufacturer the editor met but at the same time very open about the way the recession affected the business. A challenging period With a tough cost efficiency plan and maximum use of the human resources within the group, Tyrolit registered a slight upturn during the summer 2009. “But the twelve months from summer 2008 until summer 2009 were

difficult and we experienced some balance problems during that period,” adds Marra. “Without our overall strong financial situation and also our good cash flow during 2009 the difficulties could have emerged considerably. I am also proud to say that Tyrolit, during this difficult time, survived independently without any help from our owners. And this is very much thanks to our very competent personnel.”

But from the se-cond half of 2009 the economic difficulties seemed to be over and Tyrolit has since shown positive figures again. “But 2010 is quite a delicate year, somewhat a boarder land be-

Midhage Diatip invests in upgraded website For more than fifteen years the Swedish company Midhage Diatip has been exhibiting their equipment for re-brazing segments onto diamond tools at Bauma in hall A1. But this year it is different. Carina Midhage, who is in charge of sales explains that by a mistake they were directed to another hall in the exhibition.

General Equipment’s new axial flow blowers The US firm General Equipment Company has launched new axial-flow confined space ventilation blowers to its extensive line of hazardous and nonhazardous location ventilation blowers. Available in both 200mm and 300mm diameters, the blowers are ideal for use in conventional confined space worksites such as manholes and sewers. They are also powerful enough to push air across large, open areas, making them ideal for drying applications, improving indoor air quality levels and removing unwanted odours.

Three models are included in the line. The EP8ACP is powered by a 1/3 HP, 115 VAC electric motor and provides a free air delivery rate of 25m3/ min. For jobsites where power is supplied by a service vehicle, the EP8DCP features a 1/6 HP, 12 VDC permanent magnet motor. Free air delivery rate is 24m3/min. Atlas Copco drills for Balfour Beatty In the UK contractor Balfour Beatty is building twin 1.8km running tunnels to take the A3 trunk road beneath the Devils Punchbowl at Hindhead.

Working for the Highways Agency Balfour Beatty was faced with core drilling approximately 13,000 holes in the tunnels’ walls and floors.

The 40 mm diameter, 150 mm deep holes were drilled every 750 mm at an upward angle using rigs mounted on the tunnels’ concrete shutter units. The holes in the tunnel floors needed to be 137 mm diameter and 220 mm deep drilled vertically every 2 m using a portable drill rig. Both sets of holes were needed to ensure stability of the automatic concrete shutter units when forming the insitu tunnel lining sections.

core drills, each powered by an Atlas Copco 3 phase electric, 20 l/min hydraulic power pack.

Electric power packs were selected because they did not pose a problem in the tunnels with exhaust emissions.

“The drilling rate, reliability and robustness of the Atlas Copco LCD 1500 core drills are far better than the electric core drills being used initially and has saved us a lot of time,” says tunnel agent Dave Carver. “Because they don’t draw in air to keep cool, like electric tools, they don’t suffer the problems caused by ingress of water and dirt. When you have thousands of holes to drill, time saved on every hole and lack of breakdowns soon adds up.”

Mist of a hurricane from Adamas The Dutch manufacturer Adamas is now launching a dust reduction device called Hurricane. The device reduces dust with water mist. The water mist is adjustable and protects the operators from harmful concrete dust on the building site.

“During demolition, cutting and drilling in concrete small dust particles get airborne and are a danger to the health of the operators and all other persons on the building site. Whenever (dry) dust extraction is not possible the portable Hurricane water mist device is a perfect solution”, says Danny van der Swan at Adamas.

Prime Time for Cedima

German manufacturer Cedima has grown to be a strong player in the global concrete sawing and drilling industry. The company has also built up a strong position in the eastern region of Europe and Russia.

In 2009 the German manufacturer Cedima celebrated its 25th anniversary. PDi highlights Cedima’s record in the concrete sawing business.

Celle is a town in Lower Saxony, Germany. It may not be the biggest and best known of German localities, but it is the capital of the province of Celle and a place where the new and the old live in perfect harmony. The town, with fully preserved historic centre and its crown jewel, Schloss Celle, dating back to the Middle Ages, is also one of Europe’s major oil hubs, swarmed with a multitude of oil-related companies, predominantly from the USA. Celle’s other industries include machine building, electronics, food manufacture and metal, wood and plastic processing. It was there, at the cross of contemporary technology and ancient history, where Cedima was born in 1984.

“Not out of thin air” The town’s name is echoed in the word Cedima, which was coined by Dietmar Wirthgen, one of the founding members of the corporation. Importantly, Cedima did not appear out of thin air. Wilfried Rudolf, Dietmar Wirthgen, Ehrhardt Mattern, Günther Promoli, and Günther Greb, who started it, had previously worked for an American company building machines and tools for construction applications. When the company decided to shut down its operations in Celle, its German staff, faced with job threats, decided to put their already substantial experience to good use. Back in 1984, concrete cutting with diamond tipped tools was still an emerging business with brilliant growth prospects, and Cedima’s founders were shrewd enough to discern them. They started out with just 20 employees and focused on offering a comprehensive line of sawing and drilling machinery and diamond consumables for the construction and stone industries.

Go East!

Even 25 years ago, this fast developing market was already very competitive. Diamant Boart, Dimas, Norton and Tyrolit had already made themselves known to the industry, while the young company had yet to find its own identity that would set Cedima apart from its rivals. Cedima reasoned that its key to success might lie in providing onsite consultations to customers and in solving large-scale complex projects involving construction and renovation of motorways, airports, nuclear power plants and industrial buildings. Its staff included a number of highly qualified engineers, with a great deal of field experience, and Cedima pinned its hopes of gaining an edge over competitors on their expertise.

Cedima also attached special priority to the Eastern Europe market that proved another farsighted move. In the late 1980s, the geopolitical landscape was rapidly transforming, with the wind of change blowing in and out of the cracks in the crumbling Berlin Wall. Behind it, further down the east lay a vast territory that held tantalizing opportunities for businesses. The Eastern Bloc was disintegrating, leaving in its trail a score of retarded economies in bad need of an overhaul. Cedima was one of the first manufacturers in the industry to set its sights on this promising market. The firm began its international expansion by opening an agency, Cedima s.r.o., in Prague in 1996. Infrastructure of the former Czechoslovakia had long become decayed and dilapidated, and Cedima saw it as a good chance to step in with its more than ample experience in reconstruction and modernization.

Cedima’s next move was to set up an office in Russia. In the early 2000s, Russia represented a fast-growing market fuelled by petrodollars, too lucrative to be neglected and way too huge to be monitored from Germany. This is how ‘OOO CEDIMA’ began to operate in Moscow in 2003. Soon, Cedima added a few service depots providing retipping and maintenance services to the list of its Russian affiliates. A subsidiary in Vilnius, Lithuania, became the newest link in the Cedima international chain. It was open in December 2008 to service the customers in the Baltic States.

The success that Cedima enjoys in Russia and the Post Soviet countries has been, to a large extent, a result of the effective sales and marketing policy of Alexander Redich, the Soviet born head of sales for Cedima in the area.

Broad manufacturing capabilities These days, Cedima is a midsize international corporation that employs some 280 staff. Cedima’s huge product line can be broadly divided into two major categories. One includes products for professional contractors, with the focus on mid and heavy-duty machinery for sawing and drilling and diamond tools for the concrete, asphalt and stone applications. The other one is represented by more conventional equipment like small flat saws, table and hand held saws and light drill rigs that specialty retailers sell to

construction companies, handicraft enterprises and end-users.

Cedima disposes of a few manufacturing facilities where machines and diamond consumables are assembled.

Ceritec GmbH’, a Cedima business unit responsible for development and production of diamond-tipped tools, runs a plant in Celle where premium class tools for professional applications are manufactured, often on a tailor-made basis. In 2005, Cedima incorporated machine-building company Cedima Mezimesti s.r.o from the Czech Republic into the group. The Czech manufacturer now accounts for a large part of Cedima’s catalogue. Cedima also complements its product line with diamond tools it purchases from other suppliers. All imported goods are routinely checked to meet Cedima’s stringent quality requirements and are intended for the lower end of the market.

In-house R&D and commitment to quality Cedima enjoys the luxurious advantage of having an entire company Ceritec GmbH, to take care of the research and development side of the diamond tools business. Ceritec has being doing this job for Cedima since 1991, and it has long made it a practice to lean on customers’ experience and specific requirements when working on a new product. To remain on the cutting edge of innovation in the machine-building sector, Cedima maintains close ties with various technical universities.

All machines and tools are developed, assembled and tested according to a strict quality check procedure. For instance, prior to putting a new tool into production, its performances are repeatedly verified on a computer controlled bridge saw. For the test results to be representative, composition of a material to be cut must be exactly the same in all tests. Given this, Cedima only uses proven suppliers of various construction materials for test purposes. This state-of-the-art approach is expensive and time consuming, but Cedima, with its unwavering commitment to quality, considers the money well spent, because only that way the manufacturer can obtain objective results. Cedima keeps test certificates for every machine it has ever built. It helps the manufacturer quickly locate and trouble shoot the source of malfunction. All the company’s internal operations and business processes are performed in accordance with quality management standard DIN ISO 9001 to which Cedima has been certified since 1996.

The German building society recognized the manufacturer’s accomplishments by granting “Award for innovation” to Cedima’s mini wire saw CSA100 at BAUMA in 2007. The company could possibly repeat its success at this year’s Bauma with a number of new inventions. Just like everyone else in the industry, export-oriented Cedima has felt the full impact of the global recession. Luckily, the manufacturer soon learned to tap into its inner resources, at first for survival, and then for further development. The world market is expected to pick up in 2010, and if it happens, Cedima’s global expansion programme will be put back on track. The markets of South America and Africa are of particular interest.

Choice galore!

Flat saws, which are designed for cutting concrete and asphalt to a depth of 900mm, account for the biggest share of Cedima production. Modified flat saws, which are specially tuned up for efficient cutting of green concrete, are also available. For airport and highway jobs, Cedima supplies outsize milling equipment, which is capable of grooving and skimming off the asphalt or concrete from the road or airstrip surface at a width of 1.25m.

A Pioneer in asphalt recycling

The German crusher manufacturer DSB Innocrush has been conducting pioneering trials during last summer crushing and recycling the special asphalt used in Finland. The company is working closely with its partner in Finland KH Koneet OY, which has supplied to one of its customers an Innocrush 50 and an Innoscreen 25 for use in the trials.

Previously the temperature conditions in Finland have only permitted crushing with a jaw crusher during winter months. DSB has now set new standards by crushing and processing asphalt in an impact mill over the entire year. The wear costs are somewhat higher for an impact mill, but the possibility of crushing over the entire year and the production of perfectly finished material mean a much higher profit.

Thanks to the unique crusher geometry, the Innocrush 50 with its 1.3m diameter rotor, the largest impact mill in the current range, guarantees extremely high capacity. During the trials 270 t/h of asphalt was processed with a feed size up to 1m.

One criterion for the high capacity is the doubledeck heavy-duty screen supplied as standard. This screens off material that has the final grain size, and transfers this past the mill directly to the main discharge belt. The fine material can also be conveyed on the side discharge belt to the stockpile. Another criterion is the hydraulic monitoring of the main discharge belt, which guarantees problem free operation. If necessary, it is possible to intervene in the control of the vibro trough. The downstream double deck screen separates the material into the required fractions of 0-11 mm, 11-16 mm and 16-80 mm.

This was a pioneering contract and DSB technicians stayed on the customer’s site for the first few weeks to provide support. The experience gained with the special Finnish asphalt led directly to machine optimization. The improvements implemented with these optimizations were incorporated directly into ongoing production.

Aquajet on Canadian highway tunnel

Hydrodemolition techniques are being used in Canada for the refurbishment of Montreal’s Highway 720 Ville Marie Tunnel, a key arterial east-west highway across the city. Canada’s infrastructure and general contractor, GTS has taken delivery of the latest generation HVD Evolution robot from Sweden’s Aquajet Systems AB, for hydrodemolition in the Ville Marie Tunnel. Hydrodemolition will ensure no rebar damage, minimise risk of good concrete removal, eliminate dust and crystalline silica and provide a superior bond surface. It is also a substantially faster than mechanical removal methods and is also considerably less labour intensive.

Ville Marie Tunnel The 3 km long tunnel was opened in 1974 and features a mix of 3, 4 and 5 lanes along its route. As a key arterial east-west highway across the city, with more than 100,000 vehicle movements a day, it is essential that traffic restrictions be minimised.

The GTS contract involves replacing approximately 1 km of concrete on both sides of the eastern portals directly below the Montreal Palais des Congres. Concrete is being removed to a depth of 125 mm exposing the old rebar. An additional 100 mm and new rebar for further strength, making 225 mm thickness, is being added.

the bottom level and 0 – 15 m along the upper level at the portal, are undertaken at a time. Close to the portal exit two areas over a length of 15 m were in very poor condition and was removed in a single operation.

Project Manager, Michel Francoeur had previous experience with hydrodemolition techniques using a standard Aqua Cutter robot rented from Toronto for a bridge deck slab project in Montreal. “We had been very

impressed with the performance and quality of work recognising the potential for this tunnel project,” he said, “On winning this contract we took delivery of the new unit together with the Power Pack, a PP700 and we have not been disappointed.”

GTS started work on the contract in midAugust with an October 2010 completion date, expecting to finish work along the slow lane tunnel wall by March 2011.Operations will then be switched to the fast lane side of the tunnel, closing the outside lane.

Operating in live traffic conditions with very heavy traffic flows and working at heights of up to 15 m, it was essential that the contractor protected its workforce and passing traffic from falling debris. As a result the robot is installed behind a protected frame and positioned on a telescopic handler for ease of access for the extended height operations.

The Aqua Cutter is thought to be the only robot in the world that is able to operate at these heights of up to 15 m and this was a key factor in GTS purchasing the Aquajet system. Operating at 1000 bar the Aquajet system is using a water flow rate of 260 l/ min and is achieving a removal rate in the deteriorated concrete of up to 1.5 m3/h.

Blastrac promote Responsible for developing the

first shot blaster for naval ship decks in 1976, Dutch-based Blastrac now supplies grinding, polishing, shot blasting, scrapping and stripping machines to contractors in nearly 90 countries.

A manufacturer of surface preparation equipment, Blastrac has maintained its global presence within various construction sectors through foresight, an acquisition and product expansion.

“Our product and revenue mix has shifted drastically from core products of shot blasting equipment to the new initiatives,” said Blastrac global vice president Stephen Klugherz.

Acquired Diamatic in 2004 One of those initiatives involved Blastrac’s 2004 purchase of the Dutch Diamatic brand. Known for specialized grinding and polishing equipment, the Diamatic brand has become a central part of Blastrac’s product offering. “We’ve probably put together the most complete line of floor grinding, polishing and scrapping equipment in the marketplace,” said Klugherz. “Those are the two market segments that are still growing.”

Currently Blastrac manufactures under the Diamatic brand hand held grinders, single-head and heavyduty surface grinders, heavy-duty and multi-purpose planetary polishers/grinders and micro polishers.

A series of diamond products, ranging from wings to pads, are also part of the Diamatic brand, along with heavy-duty vacuums.

“We originally let that brand have separate distribution and manufacture equipment for other sales agencies. But we have cancelled those agreements and sell everything direct as the red Diamatic product line, which was introduced in February 2009 at World of Concrete,” says Klugherz.

Full commitment to grinding and polishing through Diamatic Three years prior, Blastrac noticed that more than 60 companies were portraying themselves as a supplier of grinding or polishing-related equipment at World of Concrete. However a significant amount of those companies were not centrally focused on grinding and polishing, and in the coming years fell to the wayside.

This influenced Blastrac to further commit to its Diamatic product line. “We found that without having a centrally-focused sales team and product offering there was no way to participate in the polishing and grinding market in a large way,” says Klugherz.

By focusing on the Diamatic product line, Blastrac has positioned itself to be a primary manufacturer and supplier of surface preparation equipment moving forward. “The market is going to polish from the traditional floor coatings, and grinding for preparation is more prevalent,” says Klugherz. “We’ve seen the shot blasting market decline dramatically.”

The demand for specific scrapping machines that can remove glue, tile and carpet, without damaging a floor’s substrate, is also growing as more building owners request polished concrete when remodelling or upgrading buildings.

“Demolition contractors for a long time would throw grunt at a building’s floors with no consideration for what the substrate would look like when they’re done,” says Klugherz. “But if you scratch or gouge a floor it’s not polishable.”

Aiming for the top segment In 2009 Blastrac restructured its manufacturing and sales operations, and experienced a decline in overall sales. However, the company expects to recoup the majority of that decline in 2010, in part because of its growing product line. According to Klugherz, Diamatic launched a number of new products or upgrades to existing products during the World of Concrete. New products include a planetary grinder, edger, micro-polisher and vacuum. The

company also introduced a new, walk-behind planing machine, which features a gang saw diamond for planing down groves, exposing aggregate, or levelling a floor that has previously been remodelled. A texturing and pavement preservation product line, featuring new maintenance chemicals, densifiers and colours/dyes, also were released in January 2010.

“The whole idea is to position ourselves as one of the top players in the polishing segment and we feel like we’re ready for that now,” says Klugherz.

Riccardo Garelli came second and Lorenzo Frasson (Frasson Ermenegildo) was third. Luigi Zamperini has set a clear standard for the following championships.

Every national competition will last about half a day and create an attractive event for professional users, customers and visitors. Up to 26 contestants will participate in every national championship. Qualifying tournaments will do the selection.

Standard rules and regulations The Tyrolit Cutting Pro Competition uses a standardised set of regulations that allows for fair competitions and internationally comparable results. In addition, machines, tools, concrete and all other competition materials are defined and conditioned to guarantee that every contestant can compete on the same terms.

Exercises and products

Contestants compete against each other in three exercises: wall sawing, core drilling and hand sawing. Two contestants perform every exercise together on stage and the one with the fastest total time wins. The result is an exciting competition that is intuitively understandable and attractive for spectators. Wall sawing: The goal of this exercise is to saw a slice off a reinforced concrete block as quickly as possible. The cut has to be performed in at least two passes. An optimum performance will depend on the ideal cutting depth of the first and second pass and the feeling of the contestant for machine, tool and concrete.

Core drilling: In this exercise the contestants have to drill a hole in a concrete block. With the start signal, the drill rig has to be mounted and motor plus core drill have to be fixed before the drilling can begin. The installation of the drilling system requires skill and experience. A fast drilling time will depend on applying the right pressure on the core drill.

For this exercise, a Tyrolit system consisting of the drill rig DRA250*** and the electric drill motor DME32MW*** will be used. The core bit CDL*** has a diameter of 102 mm.

Hand sawing: A disc has to be cut off from a concrete tube. Speed and know-how of the contestants in dealing with the one-handed angle grinder are essential for this task.

The set-up consists of a 5 kW petrol driven, one-

handed angle grinder that powers the 350mm diameter Tyrolit diamond saw blade DCU***. The cutting is done in wet conditions with the water directed into the cut via the machine.

Safety In order to take part in the Tyrolit Cutting Pro Competition, the contestants must have proficiency and experience in the command of the machines and tools. In addition, the regulations specify the mandatory protective equipment for every exercise. On stage, the movements of the competitors are limited to clearly marked safety areas.

The Bobcat T110, with the new Selectable Joystick Control option, now offers a top speed of 13.5 km/h, making it the fastest compact tracked loader in this class on the market, the company claims.

It is 55% higher than the single speed system and the new top speed is part of a two-speed option allowing for faster cycle times between dig and dump sites as well as speedier transit from one jobsite to another. In addition, a speed management system allows the operator to match travel speed to job requirements to optimise attachment performance and provide even more precise control of machine movements in tight areas. The SMS can be used to preset the speed desired when working with specific attachments such as tillers and trenchers.

The SJC system on the T110 gives the operator a choice between hand operated or foot operated control of the engine speed. To suit different needs and preferences, there are also three settings, which change how responsive the loader’s drive and steering systems are when the operator moves the joysticks. The SJC system also gives a choice between ‘ISO’ and conventional ‘H’ skid steer hand control patterns on the same joysticks, simply by pushing a rocker switch in the cab.

When operating the loader in the ISO-pattern, the left joystick controls the drive function while the right joystick controls the lift and tilt functions. When operating the loader in the H-pattern, the left joystick’s forwards and backwards movement controls the loader’s left side drive function and the side-to-side movement controls the lift function, while the right joystick’s forwards and backwards movement controls the loader’s right side drive function and the side-to-side movement controls the tilt function.

The SJC system provides easy front auxiliary hydraulics operation with a choice between variable flow, allowing for slow to fast movement of auxiliary hydraulic functions, and continuous flow, which allows for a constant flow of auxiliary hydraulic oil to an attachment. The SJC system also has a float feature for levelling the ground surface.

At just 1.2 m wide and less than 2.3 m long without attachment, the compactness and transportability of the new 2.3 t Bobcat T110 compact tracked loader are matched by superior operator comfort and high performance in all types of weather and ground conditions. Strong continued focus in all aspects In 2007 Heger carried out a major restructuring programme throughout all three Heger units, which enabled Heger to invest in state of the art segment production and laser welding equipment. “Today 95% of all products are laser welded. Dry and wet cut blades from 110 to 1200 mm as well as core drills from 12 to 300 mm are manufactured with the strongest and safest technology

available,” says Haag.

There are many ongoing projects in the Heger research and development department to preserve the environment.

In the new generation of wall sawing, granite cutting, dry cutting and light floor sawing blades Heger has managed to ban Cobalt and Nickel from the metal powder components.

According to Stefan Haag Heger has not been affected too much by the recession. The company is well prepared for the recovering and increasing construction activities in Europe and plans to grow significantly in the coming months and years. “SHOW MUST GO ON” A scaled down World of Concrete show illustrates how good things can still come in small packages.

Despite the prolonged slump in the US construction industry, there were some smiles in Las Vegas during World of Concrete week this year. And not all of them belonged to cab drivers desperate for show-related fares. To be sure, WOC 2010 was a shadow of it not-so-distant record-setting heydays. The sluggish economy helps erode attendance to 55,101, down 16% from 2009, with total exhibit space off by nearly one third.

But despite an abundance of both elbowroom and visitor laments about the lack of work back home, WOC nevertheless fulfilled its annual promise to showcase the concrete industry’s most innovative products and technologies.

The news was there A major contributor to that effort was Hilti, whose new product parade included the TE 1500-AVR breaker; DD 350 and DD 500 diamond coring systems powered by 1,000Hz high frequency brushless motors; and the lightweight TE-60 Combihammer, which delivers nearly 2,800 impacts per minute.

Hilti also used WOC to spotlight its recent acquisition of Diamond B, which included an inventory of more than 750 blade and bit matrices to cover all North American aggregate types. “They’re a perfect fit for us,” said head of Hilti Diamond Professional Segment Andrew Hunt. “A North American blade manufacturer will allow us to replicate the success we’ve had in Europe.” Hunt also foresees additional synergies emerging from having Diamond B in the fold.

“We may begin promoting flat sawing in Europe, where we see more work with wall sawing, and vice versa,” he said. ”In a declining construction industry, customers need to find ways to cut costs and make their business more productive. Husqvarna likewise made several product introductions, including the K760 with its reduced fuel consumption and emissions features, and the WS 482 HF electric wall saw, which can hold up to a 1.58m blade and can be operated by remote control. “New product development and introduction are a part of our culture,” said Husqvarna North America vice president Steve Chamberlin. “When market conditions change, our customer’s needs do not go away. They change as well and we continue to develop and introduce new products to better serve their needs.”

Also debuting at WOC was Finmac Demolition’s new partnership with Stanley LaBounty to bring the F16 demolition robot to North America’s rapidly growing market for remote controlled tools. “The US makes up one quarter of the world’s demolition market, so it’s very important for us to be a part of it,” said Finmac business development manager Jaakko Lipsanen. “We found an ideal partner in Stanley LaBounty, which has the name recognition and reach we wanted.”

Stanley LaBounty product line manager Rob Murray explained that with its high power-to-weight ratio, the 1.55t F16 can be mated with potent breakers such as the Stanley MB356 breakers to provide more working force. The robot can also be split in half for easy transfer in confined interior spaces. “Users can also customize the outrigger footprint to accommodate weight restrictions, and easily customize the hydraulics for each attachment,” said Murray.

The prospect of another competitor didn’t seem to trouble Brokk, Inc., president Lars Lindström, who said that more product options in robotic demolition brings more attention to this approach, which is good for everyone.

Safety, productivity remain priorities While the US economy was WOC’s leading topic of conversation, it did not completely overshadow ongoing industry issues, such as silica dust control.

Among Blastrac’s many new products was the 1-16DB diesel ride-on shot blaster, which features an onboard dust collection system with twin 0.6m3 bags for easier removal and disposal, and minimal operator exposure. For larger jobs, the twin motor BDC955 dust collector has nine easily removable filter cartridges for a total capacity of 100 kg. “With easy access to the filters, workers can quickly change bags while the dust collector is running and production doesn’t have to stop,” says Blastrac national training director John Rippman.

Dustcontrol USA gave US contractors their first look at its compact AirCube 2000 single phase air cleaner, which features an airflow capacity of 1,800m3/h.

Dustless Technologies also introduced several new dust control shrouds for drilling and grinding.

“As silica collection and prevention becomes bigger, more companies are looking for dust collection and remediation systems as a more affordable alternative to higher health costs,” observed Jeff Beck from DeWalt, which demonstrated a new HEPA dust extraction system for its L-shape SDS hammers. The filter delivers 99.95% efficiency at 3 microns, while a two second power off delay allows dust extraction to continue after the drill is switched off. Stihl rolled out its new TS 410 and TS 420 Cutquik cut off machines with a new electronic water control feature that allows operators to easily adjust the flow of water while cutting, and quickly revert to the previous setting used. Both feature X2 air filtration that delivers 99.96% clean air to the machine for better performance and longer filter life, plus more than 40% reductions in vibrations and emissions.

Genesis added the GDR 150 to its line of demolition recycling attachments. Designed for compact 16t to 23t excavators, the GDR 150’s 660mm jaw produces 85t at the tip. For bigger jobs, Genesis has added the GDR 300 attachment, which produces 148t crushing force.

And Wacker Neuson gave WOC visitors a sneak preview of a new line of large hammers that will be introduced to the US market later this year. “Though we’ve been using them successfully overseas, we’ve been testing the hammers in different applications across the country to ensure that they bring out the best in our machines,” says Wacker Neuson sales engineering manager Fred Paul. The hammers will be matched for most of Wacker Neuson’s range of 1.4 to 8t excavators.

Another WOC point of emphasis was effective power management. Concut’s Wolverine Equipment Division displayed its large hydraulic power pack, which features 65-hp Kubota diesel motor and dual hydraulic circuits to regulate flow and pressure independently for large and small tools. The Green Paradox As the UK Government battles to meet ambitious carbon reduction targets, the demolition sector potentially stands on the brink of an industry boom.

But we are in danger of running around in circles, warns PDi’s Mark Anthony.

Like its cousin the construction industry, the demolition sector has suffered from the slings and arrows of economic misfortune during the past 18 months. Demand has slowed and any work that has continued has been consistently value engineered to ensure that, when the dust settled, any meagre profits remained with the client or main contractor, not with the demolition crews.

Like construction, demolition has borne these cycles of boom and bust before, and will undoubtedly do so again; and as deep and prolonged as this latest trough might have been, there is now the faint whisper of recovery in the air. And following one particular high-profile public pronouncement, some demolition contractors are even allowing themselves to imagine another boom beckoning on the horizon. What sets this possible upturn aside, however, is its root cause.

While previous upward curves in the fortunes of the demolition industry could be traced back to the need for more houses, office buildings and sports arenas, the next boom, if it happens, is likely to be a result of the need for less.

Carbon Reduction The UK Government’s chief construction adviser Paul Morrell has been charged with ridding the construction industry of its carbon emissions in order to meet ambitious targets to reduce the country’s overall carbon footprint by an ambitious 80% by 2050. And in a recent interview with The Times, he said that some of these reductions will require the demolition of swathes of city centre buildings erected in the 1960s and 1970s.

Morrell, who took up his new post at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills at the end of November last year, said: “In the Sixties, everything was built cheaper, faster and nastier. Although you can do some things to buildings from the Sixties and Seventies, like replacing the roofs, there are some places that need to come down entirely.”

He said that problem areas were likely to be places such as Newcastle city centre, where a lot of buildings went up in the Sixties and Seventies. Other towns that

could undergo an eco-makeover could include Slough and Aylesbury. “The buildings that pose the most difficulties are semi-industrialised, highly inefficient, badly insulated and so ugly that they are not worth refurbishing,” Morrell added.

According to the British Property Federation, property is responsible for 50% of the UK’s carbon emissions.

The Government has a target for all new commercial buildings built from 2018 to be zero-carbon, but a strategy for how to deal with existing stock has yet to be established. Meanwhile, The Policy Exchange thinktank, has estimated that Britain would need to spend about £400 billion on new and refurbished infrastructure by 2020 to address historic underinvestment and to kick-start transition to a low-carbon economy.

Environmental Impact All of which will be like music to the ears of the beleaguered demolition industry that has long since completed its work on the London 2012 Olympic development and has been scanning the horizon for the next impending upturn in fortune.

However, while demolition contractors would unquestionably welcome such a large-scale city centre clearance campaign, the industry is more conscious than most of the potential environmental impact of the buildings erected to replace those demolished.

As an industry, demolition prides itself on its environmental credentials, and members of the National Federation of Demolition Contractors regularly achieve recycling levels of over 95% that put their construction cousins to shame.

But while bricks, slates, timber and concrete have all been the source of additional revenue in the past, there is a growing concern that the construction industry’s continuing lack of foresight could lead to another environmental black hole in the not too distant future.

“In older buildings, virtually everything can be recycled, reused or salvaged in some way,” says NFDC chief executive Howard Button. “But more modern buildings often contain materials that cannot be reclaimed or which are cross-contaminated to the point that they hold no commercial value and renders them non-recyclable.”

Continuing Practice Of course, it would be nice to lay the blame for this problem at the door of naive architects of the past who were blissfully unaware of the environmental havoc that would be wrought by their profligate use of materials that were ultimately destined for landfill. But, according to Button, these policies remain today.

“Architects are continuing to specify composite materials for buildings that are being erected now,” he asserts. “In 20 or 30 years time when that building is being demolished to make way for something else, those materials are going to one place - a large hole in the ground - with all the environmental issues associ-

ated with it.”

Button, along with other members of his industry, is convinced that the solution lies in an End of Life Directive, similar to that imposed upon car manufacturers, with reuse or recycling designed in long before a structure is built. “As an industry, we can only handle the materials that we find within the structures we’re demolishing. And while we have pioneered many innovative recycling and reuse systems and solutions, we are now working on buildings from the 1980s containing materials that simply cannot be reclaimed,” adds Button. “Ultimately, this will have a negative effect upon the environmental impact of what is ostensibly a very green industry sector. More worryingly, that is likely to mean a greater level of materials going to landfill and a growth in demand for increasingly scarce virgin materials.”

Sting in the Tail And that, according to Button, is the sting in the tail.

While traditional construction materials can be readily processed and often reused on-site, processing or disposal of these more complex composite materials generally requires them to be transported off-site for handling and processing by specialist third-parties. “As soon as materials have to be hauled or transported, any carbon reductions made by the removal of an inefficient or poorly insulated building will be undermined by the carbon emissions of road transport and, in some cases, incineration of materials. As an environmentally-aware industry sector, we welcome any Government initiative that will lower carbon emissions and make the UK greener, particularly if it means more work for this sector,” says Button. “But unless the UK Government insists that construction is planned with future demolition and dismantling in mind, we will all be exactly where we started 20 or 30 years from now.”

Libanio Neto. When he was looking to complete his demolition equipment fleet with a remotely controlled robot, he chose the Husqvarna DXR 310, which went straight to work on a major demolition job.

The job was the expansion of a mall in Uberlandia, a city in the state of Minas Gerais in southeastern Brazil. Openings had to be made in a concrete wall to integrate the basements of the existing building and the new sector under construction. Fourteen openings had to be cut in the reinforced concrete wall from 350 to 470mm thick, seven were 1.6 m x 1.6 m, and the other seven were 7m x 2.15m.

The contractor and client of Furacon, Dreste Engenharia Ltda, had to avoid disturbance in the mall, and to meet the tight time schedule. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We needed a machine that enabled us to make the openings more quickly than a wall saw. Also taking down the concrete block in just one piece would have been too risky as it might have gone through the floor,â&#x20AC;? says Alberto Libanio.

The DXR 310, with its efficient breaker, in combination with a wall saw turned out to be the perfect combination. The Furacon team wall sawed all the smaller openings in three straight cuts, leaving the fourth bottom side of each opening intact.

After only a short training period, our operators could manoeuvre the machine really well, and were already able to perform some demolition techniques explained by the Husqvarna technicians,â&#x20AC;? says Alberto Libanio.

Covering an area of 20,000 m2, the new shopping centre EO is highly important for the economy and infrastructure of the Austrian town of Oberwart in Burgenland. But a faulty laser setting during concrete works in the area to house the escalators and shops meant that the concrete was too thick and the escalators did not fit. The concrete was approximately 10mm to 30mm too high and had to be removed by milling.

The plan was first to correct the fault, using scarifiers, and then install the escalators.

However, the production with the scarifier was too low, so the project managers for alternative methods. S c h w a m b o r n suggested the solution of using the OMF 250 milling machine.

It functions with an oscillating milling drum which, rotating at 170 rpm, produces 3,400 hammer blows per minute. Depending on the concrete quality, the milling performance is approximately 15-30 m2/h, at a milling depth of 10mm to 30mm.

Before work could start the machine had to be lifted through the roof onto the first floor of the shopping centre by crane. Another reason for using the OMF 250 was the load-bearing capacity of the floors as only a lightweight machine could be used. The milling machine weighs 1,030 kg, about 60% less than alternative, larger cold milling machines.

The rear left wheel is retractable, making it possible to mill up to 30mm from the edge of the open shafts for the escalators. They occasionally encountered steel reinforcement, but this was not a problem for the OMF 250 since the milling drive is also equipped with a DOC drum-overload clutch to prevent damage. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The results of the work and the fact we were able to meet the deadlines brought smiles to the faces of all those involved,â&#x20AC;? says Schwamborn marketing and sales director Gebhard Grass. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We

were able to solve the clientâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s problem and use the advantages of the patented cold milling machine effectively, which meant the structural work could continue on time.â&#x20AC;?

D-Drill quietly removes Southampton Hospital roof Any drilling work at a hospital requires critical control of the noise and timescale, which is why the UK contractor C.G Comley Demolition appointed D-Drill for their expertise in the controlled demolition of a Southampton Hospital roof. The roof was situated directly above the main medical supplies entrance, which is in constant use, and adjacent to live hospital wards..

The work required extremely careful removal to avoid disrupting the delivery of these critical hospital supplies. It involved demolishing the 350mm thick reinforced concrete roof using a combination of 415v 3 phase high frequency Hilti TS-20E track saw for transverse cuts, and Dimas FS 71 HP diesel powered floor saw for longitudinal cuts. D-Drill also took along a 415v 3 phase 65 KVA generator to avoid using hospital supply.

The area was removed in two scheduled visits, and the job was completed in just five days an four days ahead of schedule.

The first section was 29 m x 3.5 m x 350 mm deep, which was cut into sections approximately 1.8 m x 1.5 m, Each weighed 2 t and were lifted by a 100 t mobile crane onto lorries for immediate removal as there was very limited space within the site. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There was no storage facility for the stockpiling of cut sections and there were hospital patients literally the other side of the boarded windows, which meant that conventional demolition methods of removal were not possible,â&#x20AC;? says D Drill London and South Area Manager John Barber. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Therefore specific load bearing support systems were designed months in advance to ensure that the whole area of the roof could be cut and held safely in place, which enabled a controlled and speedy removal process. D-Drill was selected for this project because we were considered to have the preferred method of removal and offered the best solution for this particular contract with all the associated constraints.â&#x20AC;?

Being able to use a 1.5mm thick and 300mm long tube instead of the standard 2.5mm tube also contributes to significantly reduce its weight. With a tapered top and 10mm high segments, it is not only very easy to start but also lasts longer than competitive

products. The X2 is a technical, safer and better adapted to hand held drilling.

Foam drilling an alternative to dry drilling Many drilling contractors have faced this issue: A large drilling job without the ability to use water. It is often the case in nuclear demolition but also in specific jobs or sensitive environments. Dry drilling with PCD tips is an option but very expensive and does not provide good performances, especially in heavy reinforced concrete.

The engineers at Norton-Nimbus have developed an alternative solution, using foam as a coolant replacing water. First developed and patented by our R&D centre in Japan for wire sawing, it has now been adapted to drilling.

This foam drilling unit is composed of a compressor generating a specially developed and environment friendly foam through the drilling motor. The foam is then vacuumed and reduced back to water (see drawing).

The density of the foam has been designed to

allow fast drilling and efficiently carry the slurry out of the hole. Because of its density and contrary to water, the foam will not spread through cracks in the concrete or splatter around when drilling.

This virtually eliminates the need to protect the job site before drilling and the time cleaning up afterward. This generates valuable labour saving cost for our customers.

The volume of water used to generate the foam is one tenth of the normal volume required, which generates much less slurry. In the case of nuclear demolition this results in significant savings in recycling costs.

This foam drilling unit is an add-on to your standard drill rig and motor and is compatible with all equipment in the market. The investment is therefore minimum and readily accessible to all without special training.

Starting from a technical solution to a niche

Small diameter drilling is carried out with thin wall crowns, manufactured in one continuous ring with waterways cut out in the diamond section.

To comply with safety standards, the mechanical principals for producing crowns force manufacturers to respect a ratio of 1 to 4: where the height of the full crown can not be more than four times its thickness. This is why all crowns in the market are 10mm high, with only 7mm of actual diamond cutting section.

Norton-Nimbus has developed and patented a new production process in its Burgess Hill UK plant, where crowns are no longer manufactured as one piece but as several segments assembled together through a special densification process.

So with the above mentioned ratio no longer applying, the new Norton-Nimbus TWICs will be offered in 13mm of full diamond height, thus almost doubling the market standard. This new densification process will virtually eliminate the risk of cracks in the crowns and allow differentiation in the shape. The wider waterways of the Norton-Nimbus TWICs will provide a much faster drilling and more efficient water flow. The better evacuation of slurry from the cut will increase its life. The TWICs will initially be offered in diameters ranging from 18 to 50mm.

When UK Crossrail decided to build the biggest station of the upcoming London Cross- rail project at Canary Wharf, nothing was going to get in the way, including a steel access bridge, built in the in the late 1980’s. The new station box – one of the largest to be built in London was situated below the bridge, with vital piles to be sunk before work could commence in earnest.

One of London’s premier diamond drilling companies –Robore cuts Ltd, was called in to cut sections out of the steel bridge. Established in 1988, Robore cuts have a wealth of knowledge in the drilling and sawing industry. Their combination of experience and technical know how, helped them in their choice of method and tooling.

The project was to cut sections from the bridge deck to allow access, no easy task when you consider it is made up of 18mm thick hardened steel plate, this in turn was supported by a 230mm steel waffle section. They elected to set up a High frequency tracksaw bolted directly to the bridge deck and use a Norton-Nimbus V-Max 800mm wallsaw blade to perform the cutting.

Previous experience had shown that the V-max coped very well in both concrete and heavy steel.

With 15mm high segments and copper inserts it provided excellent life and speed as well as proving to be robust enough for the extremities of the task. They managed to cut each section of plate and waffle to full depth, to a length of 2.4m in 25 minutes, cutting the plate itself in just one pass. The complete job of 43 meters was achieved in 3 days, including set up time.
