Words from O’Brien

Hi-Cycle Technology special survey Evolution Every once in a while, a person will call the CSDA office to ask for advice on entering the concrete cutting business. Just this past week, a new contractor called to ask if he should make his first wall saw purchase a hydraulic or hi-cycle. This got me thinking about the how the industry has changed. It seems that the technology of concrete cutting is heading into a time of major change. Manufacturers at trade shows such as World of Concrete earlier this year, and the Bauma exhibition in April, are introducing more and more hi-cycle equipment. This, along with remote control options, has certainly moved the world of concrete cutting in a new direction. In the years since I entered this industry with GE Superabrasives in 1982, hydraulic-powered options for wall saws and core drills seemed to be the choice for cutting professionals. At one time, there were two main choices for wall saw systems in North America—the Longyear 360 and GDM saws. If you were part of the Concrete Coring Company franchise, the hi-cycle option had been available to you since the mid-1960’s. Skip ahead to the current decade (particularly the past five years), which has seen an increasing adoption of the hi-cycle technology, with 1000 Hz systems predominant in Europe and 400 Hz in North America. This transition also coincides with the younger operators entering the business. In the days of hydraulic operation, business owners looked to hire operators with good hydraulic and mechanical skills that made operation and repair in the field simpler. However, the younger generation has grown up with computers and video games, so operating an electric wall saw with remote controls are much more consistent with their

own experience. Some manufacturers have estimated that in five years, 50 percent of all wall saws will be hi-cycle powered. Many older operators have also embraced hi-cycle, as the lighter weight of the machinery will help extend their careers. In addition to the lighter machinery weight and remote control capabilities, hi-cycle systems offer improved performance, especially in harder aggregate. This can be a significant advantage over the competition. Remote control, along with being a nice feature to attract a younger generation, offers operators and customers the advantage of lower noise pollution as well as lower occurrences of injuries. The repair of hi-cycle equipment does present a challenge to companies, however. Older operators familiar with hydraulic power equipment will need training in the rapidly-advancing technology. Training systems and service capabilities will need to be developed as the penetration of hi-cycle systems into the market expands, but these tasks are certainly achievable considering all the positive advantages these systems offer. The concrete cutting industry has come a long way since it began more than 50 years ago. The acceptance of hicycle powered systems by owners and operators will quite possibly change and improve the professional advancement of the industry in a dramatic way. And this technological change is occurring just as new tech-savvy operators enter the industry. The future of our industry does look very bright indeed. Best regards Patrick O’Brien Executive Director CSDA, US Concrete Sawing & Drilling Association

D-Drill appoints new Plymouth branch manager

D-Drill (Master Drillers) Limited has expanded its team and appointed Jimmy Smith as the new Plymouth Area Manager. Jimmy brings more than 30 years of experience in the diamond drilling industry to D-Drill, making him an ideal resource for customers of the Plymoth branch. Smith started out at CUT-A-WAY in Luton where he learned techniques such as diamond drilling, concrete cutting and track sawing. He then spent four years at Kilnbridge in London, where he progressed to become a contract supervisor. Smith then worked for Drilltec as a contract manager and was soon promoted to contract director. “I’m really pleased to be working for D-Drill,” Smith says. “They’re such a long-established and reputable drilling company. And I’m keen to apply my skills to further develop the Plymouth branch.” Smith isn’t the only new aspect to D-Drill’s Plymouth operations. The company recently completed a new office and workshop facility in

Plympton. D-Drill has grown year-on-year since its inception. In addition to the nine regional offices, the company also has its own engineering department that manufactures drills, blades and equipment (under White Diamond Products Ltd, an operating division.) This enables D-Drill to contain its costs, and therefore keep its charges competitive. The company has further expanded its services with its Superfloor specialist surface preparation division, which offers surface preparation from shotblasting and scarifying to diamond grinding and concrete polishing. Continuing with its “one-stop shop” service approach, D-Drill has diversified into the demolition contracting market with the acquisition of MBC Specialist Services. MBC provides a complementary service to D-Drill’s core diamond drilling and sawing service. Through MBC, D-Drill introduced the use of Brokk remote demolition machinery, an important step-change in its already rigorous health and safety policies.

on his new and extended position within the company.

Exhibit space sales strong for 2011 CONEXPOCON/AGG and IFPE Despite continuing uncertainties in the manufacturing sector, companies continue to sign up to exhibit at the next CONEXPO-CON/AGG and IFPE expositions, set for March 2011. They include returning companies as well as new exhibitors, from large to niche businesses across North America and worldwide. The co-located shows will be held March 22-26, 2011 at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, USA. “Some companies have actually increased their exhibit space even though others had to reduce their commitment because of the economy,” said Megan Tanel, AEM’s vice president, exhibitions and events. “They all say they see the value of our shows as an industry gathering place to efficiently connect with customers, especially in these economic times.” With opening day about one year away, CONEXPO-CON/AGG already covers more than 1.8 million net square feet of exhibits, and IFPE is close to topping 100,000 net square feet. Exhibit space is still available, on a first come, first served basis. For added exhibitor value, the shows bundle a variety of services such as drayage into the exhibit space rate. This exhibitor “package plan” covers full drayage (including unloading/loading of all crated materials and machinery and delivery to exhibit spaces from the marshalling yard and pick-up at show close), general stand cleaning,

and pipe and drape for standard inline exhibit stands. Exhibitors have access to complimentary marketing materials and exhibitor training sessions, especially useful for companies new to exhibiting or to IFPE and CONEXPO-CON/AGG. The shows will again feature specialized exhibit pavilions, including a focus on information technology/management, and international exhibit pavilions. Also, ICON Expo, with an emphasis on the concrete products industry, is co-locating with the shows in 2011. “For attendees, they’ll be able to see the range of the latest products and services available in the marketplace and be able to talk one-on-one with industry experts in construction, construction materials and fluid power/motion control,” Tanel said. About 80 percent of attendees at the last edition of CONEXPO-CON/AGG and IFPE rated their value as “excellent” or “very good,” and the good-to-excellent total response exceeded 97 percent. Some three-quarters of attendees were presidents, owners, vice presidents, chief financial officers or managers. “Our shows are industry-run with a focus on customer service; our goal is to provide a quality experience for exhibitors and attendees, one that delivers the biggest return on their investment of time and money,” added IFPE Show Director Melissa Magestro.

Correction of Company name in PDi issue 1-2010 In the special feature about new concrete drilling systems in PDi issue 1-2010 the name of German manufacturer Dr. Schulze was spelled incorrectly. The PDi Editorial department is very sorry about the mistake, and apologizes for the most unfortunate incident. The name of the well-known German manufacturer of concrete sawing and drilling equipment should be Dr. Schulze GmbH, and nothing else.

Official Show Magazine’s

RECYC PDi’s editor Mikael Karlsson has spoken to the majority of the world’s manufacturers of mobile recycling equipment about the current market situation, the future and what news the market can expect in the near future.

Below the impressive production facilities at the Rubble Master plant in Linz.

Concerning the severe economic crisis in most parts of the world during 2008 and 2009, most experts and forecasters now seem to agree that the worst is behind us. However, while we can expect continuous strong growth in the construction industry in many emerging markets (mainly Brazil, China and India), North America and parts of Asia may slowly return to growth this year. In Europe, however, a notable recovery is not expected until 2011.

Rubble Master When it comes to the market of mobile recycling equipment, Mr. Gerald Hanisch, founder and CEO of the Austrian mobile recycling equipment manufacturer, Rubble Master, summed up the business climate for his own company in September last year by saying: “The international economic crisis caught us at the worst possible moment imaginable – a time in which we were growing rapidly and making groundbreaking investments (…) We want to come out of this phase stronger and better than ever before and are trying to fight our way back into the game.” This analysis is now very valid for the whole recycling equipment industry. With a new Bauma show this year, several manufacturers are currently launching new mobile recycling equipment to return to growth rather sooner than later. Concerning Rubble Master, “we do not want to publish any details about our new machine before the Bauma exhibition. But we are showing new innovations there,” says Cecilia Rathje, the company’s Marketing & PR Manager.

Hartl Powercrusher Another Austrian manufacturer, Hartl Powercrusher, is now

launching its new Powercrusher Series: PC1 up to PC6. The entire product range has been developed to satisfy almost all customers in their crushing and screening applications and requirements. In fact, the compact units PC1 (Impactor with an inlet opening of 1010 mm) and PC2 (jaw with and inlet opening of 1020 mm) have already been sold worldwide for some time. And, they act as the basis for the design of the bigger generation machines coming now. The middle-sized PC3 (Impactor with an inlet opening of 1250 mm) and PC4 (jaw with an inlet opening of 1250 mm) are especially ideal for recycling processing. Both models have optimised transport dimensions and a very low total weight. These units are extremely flexible, and can be moved very quickly from one job site to the next, where they can be set up and ready to crush in under 30 minutes. Once in operation, they produce up to 300 t/h depending on material and infeed size.

Rockster In addition, Austrian Rockster Recycler is presenting the new Turbo Crusher R1100. This new model has 32 tons total weight, but still features compact transport dimensions and boasts a performance level of close to 300 t/h, adequate for covering major transactions. As with the earlier models, R900 and R800, the newest R1100 is equipped with a fully hydraulic drive system.

Furthermore, the R1100 features a two-step, 1.8 m long pre-screener. This ensures not only a maximum pre-screening quality, but also a further increase of the throughput rate, a reduction of the wear costs as well as a perfect separation of final material an earthy substance. The R1100 is available as Duplex System (impact and jaw crusher within only one machine), or with the optional screen box. The mounting of the screen box RS94 is very easy with this model, as the main conveyor of the R1100 To the left and below the Hartl Powercrusher models PC 1 and PC 2.

mobile crushing and screening processes. Powered by a low-emission 310 kW Cat C13 diesel engine and weighing 58t, the LT110C is 15.6m long, 3m wide and 3.85 m high when being transported. Optional accessories include wireless remote control, a dust-control system, a hydraulic hammer to clear feed blockages and generator.

Kleemann Kleemann, a member company of the Wirtgen Group, has developed two completely new Mobirex mobile impact crushers that are also suitable for recycling applications. “To attain genuinely better performance, we were not satisfied with just addressing individual components,” says Thomas Kühnle, Head of Technology at Kleemann. “The key to a real increase in performance was the redesign of the flow of material encompassing all components.” The new material flow concept consistently prevents narrowing of the material stream, and the system widths of the conveyor elements “open” in the material flow direction. This allows performance values to be attained that are unmatched in these size classes. The smaller of the two machines, which has a crusher inlet opening of 1100 mm, can handle input capacities of more than 350 t/h. The larger system, which has an inlet opening of 1300 mm, can attain input capacities of 450 t/h and higher. Both machines are equipped with direct drive. A latest-generation diesel engine transmits its power almost loss-free via a robust fluid coupling and V-belts directly to the flywheel of the crusher. This drive concept also enables enormous versatility, as the rotor speed can be adjusted in four stages. As a result, the machines are equally well-suited for use in quarries and in recycling. The most important new feature of machines is the completely new impact crushers of the SHB series. They feature many convincing new detailed solutions that are unmatched, from the hydraulically actuated crusher inlet

in extremely robust heavy-duty cast design to the optimised, steeper inlet angle, to the new blow bar fastening system. All have a positive effect on availability. In addition, the SHB crushers have an innovative fully hydraulic crushing gap adjustment that can be quickly and easily operated from the operating panel.

DSB Innocrush Although German crusher manufacturer DSB Innocrush is not launching any new products this year, the company is proud to present the results of its pioneering trials in crushing and recycling a special asphalt used in Finland. DBS has been working closely with its Finnish partner KH Koneet OY, which has supplied an Innocrush 50 and an Innoscreen 25 to one of its customers for use in the trials. Previously, temperature conditions in Finland have only permitted crushing with a jaw crusher during winter months. DSB has now set new standards by crushing and processing asphalt in an impact mill over the entire year. The wear costs are somewhat higher for an impact mill, but the possibility of crushing over the entire year, combined with the production of perfectly finished material, mean a much higher profit. Thanks to the unique crusher geometry, the Innocrush 50 with its 1.3 m diameter rotor, the largest impact mill in the current range, guarantees extremely high capacity. During the trials, 270 t/h of asphalt was processed with a feed size up to one metre. The downstream double deck screen separates the material into the required fractions of 0-11 mm, 11-16 mm and 16-80 mm.

Keestrack + Omtrack In March, Belgian manufacturer of track mobile screening plants Keestrack N.V. acquired a major share of Omtrack s.r.l., an Italian manufacturer of track mobile crushers. Both companies see their market position strengthened through the combination of their advanced product lines. “We are adding the well established and proven mobile crusher line of Omtrack to our product line of track mobile screeners,” says Klaus Elit, area sales manager at Keestrack. “The new, more complete product line allows a further expansion of the already existing dealer and distributor network for both companies.”

Blue Scotland’s Recycling Plant for William Tracey Group William Tracey Group, one of the UK’s recycling and resource management operations, has turned to Blue Scotland to design and install a tailor-made £1.5M processing plant at their Linwood waste treatment centre.

The new recycling plant is comprised of a number of compatible processing and materials handling modules from Blue Scotland’s range of distributorships, including Kiverco, General Kinematics and Nihot. A series of free-standing

feed, transfer and discharge conveyors provide the essential linked materials flow for the processing equipment, the covered picking station and for stockpiling varied recycled waste sizes and volumes, including fines and topsoil. Full skirting, impact bars, feed boots with full impact sections, overband magnets for tramp metal extraction and blowers for lights removal are included.

“We’ve worked with Blue Scotland for many years and we know that we can rely on them to provide the best solutions for us,” says William Tracey Group Managing Director Michael Tracey. “Our new plant combines technologically advanced equipment to maximise recoverable materials and its performance certainly meets all our expectations”.

Australian quarries are first Mobile recycling saves costs to see new Sandvik screen and the environment

The first Sandvik branded mobile screen to be commissioned in Australia was successfully handed over to SEE Civil (South East Excavations), which operates two quarries owned by McGeary Bros. at Wardell in northern New South Wales. After extensive consultation with Precision Screen, the exclusive agent for Sandvik mobile crushers and screens in Australia, SEE ordered the robust QA330 tracked screen. According to Alan Lippiatt, SEE Quarry Manager, “the Sandvik QA330 was ideal as it easily integrated into the existing set up at the Wardell quarry operation,” in particular, its long conveyors provided the necessary height and clearance to feed the existing crushers. “The Sandvik QA330 also delivers higher production through its large screening area and high frequency double deck screen,” Lippiatt adds. Ross Smith, SEE Business Development Manager, adds that the Sandvik QA330 “is very user friendly, and simple to operate and maintain.” The quarry operation at Wardell is rather interesting. Although the two quarries are nearby, they produce separate products that are largely being used for the nearby RTA Alstonville bypass project. Materials from the Chert (quartzite) quarry are being produced to meet the base and sub-base specifications, while the Argillite

22

quarry produces the select fill, bridging layer and drainage blanket material. The Sandvik QA330 was operational on the same day as it was delivered on-site at Wardell, and is now integral to the production of high quality SEE Civil quarry products. Its modern chassis design ensures in-built machine quality and strength for maximum up-time and productivity on-site. The QA330 is also designed for optimum fuel economy and low operating costs. And when back-up and spare parts are required, “Precision Screen is always there to help you out,” Lippiatt says. This relationship has been further strengthened locally through Sandvik’s global after market support and standard stock parts. In addition to commissioning the first Sandvik branded mobile screen in Australia, SEE Civil has been consistently achieving ‘firsts’ through its innovation and resourcefulness. Since its establishment in 1988, the SEE group has grown to be a leader in its field and specialises in a large variety of construction projects, including earthworks, civil, road construction, water and sewer, hydro-transportation, dredging, quarrying, crushing, screening, retaining walls, environmental works and all aspects of residential, commercial and industrial developments.

Aspern Vienna’s Urban Lakeside, a complete new urban development, is taking shape is on the 240 hectare site of the former Aspern Airfield. Approximaty 2.3 million square metres of gross floor space will be created by the year 2028, including 8,500 housing units for 20,000 residents and 20,000 workplaces. The Underground line U2 will also serve the new district by 2013. A lively urban district will evolve, with which Vienna will make active use of the opportunities and challenges of the EU enlargement, aiming to set new standards with a “21st Century city.” Wien 3420 Aspern Development AG, a subsidiary of the Vienna Business Agency (WWFF) and the Bundesimmobiliengesellschaft (BIG), was created to direct this major building project. The consortium ARGE HABAU Hoch- und Tiefbau GmbH/Gebrüder Haider Bauunternehmung GmbH was appointed to demolish the former taxiways and runways.

On-site recycling means maximum benefits For reasons of environmental protection, and especially due to the huge cost benefits, mobile recycling is a key feature of this prestigious urban development project. HABAU Hoch- und Tiefbaugesellschaft, one of Austria’s leading construction companies and a leader in environmental awareness, has counted on mobile recycling with RUBBLE MASTER Compact Recyclers since 2004 because the high-performance impact crusher allows the material to reused in its entirety. Bernhard Radinger, Waste and Environment Manager at the HABAU Group, is using the RM80 with mobile oversized grain solution once again for this project. He says that before work began, extensive evaluation was necessary for the over 70,000 m2 site. ”Vienna/Aspern Airfield was a main centre in the Second World War and any war relics had to be found,” Radinger says. ”After this work had been completed, the job was to demolish around

15,000 m2 of concrete from the former airfield and recycle it. As a partner in the consortium we count on cost-saving on-site recycling.” Radinger adds that HABAU’s experience with the RM80 led to its use at the Aspern project. “The mobile impact crusher was extremely efficient at the large-scale demolition project at the Vienna/St. Marx slaughterhouse, for example, and we frequently use it for inner city demolition projects,” he says. The decision was also based on the machine’s outstanding performance with this material, and the ability to produce readyto-use value grain in a single pass with the OS80 mobile oversized grain separator featuring closed-loop refeeding.” “This saves us a third of the normal workflow and expense,” Radinger adds.

A record-setting assignment HABAU was tasked to process approximately 15,000 m3 of concrete, 20 percent of the entire concrete at the Aspern stie—by mid October 2010. A guillotine broke the concrete surfaces into segments. The lumps of concrete were lifted out by excavators, pulverised down to a maximum feed size of 50 cm, and then put on a pile. The feed material was then loaded into the crusher’s 23 t vibro channel using an excavator and, a wheeled loader with a 3.2 m3 bucket. The material is processed quickly in the impact crusher with automatic conveying in line with crusher workload, material and feeding type. The patented OS80 oversize grain separator, which is linked to the main discharge conveyor of the crusher by quick-release levers, grades the material cleanly to 0/32 mm. The oversized material is then returned to the crusher inlet where it is then crushed again. Radinger describes the throughput of the compact crusher as “impressive”, delivering ready-to-use 0/32 mm aggregate with peaks up to 100 t/h.

The construction economy may be slow, but breaker manufacturers are staying busy by making additions and enhancements to their product lines, reports PDi US Editor Jim Parsons in PDi’s annual breaker feature.

Indian author Eknath Easwaran once wrote that, “Patience can’t be acquired overnight. It is just like building up a muscle. Every day you need to work on it.” If Easwaran’s observation is accurate, then the world’s manufacturers and suppliers of hydraulic breakers must be a pretty strong and disciplined group by now, given the prolonged economic slowdown.

Still in the bottom Although indications of a recovery have begun to appear in many parts of the globe, these positive trends have mostly not yet reached their respective construction industries. “We are still in the bottom of the crisis,” observes Dick van der Starre of FRD Europe, “and we do not know when and to which extent it will recover.” Manufacturers may be in for a long wait. According to Antonio Cannao’ of Italian breaker manufacturer Promove, “We feel

the level of global sales will stay substantially unchanged for the next couple of years, due to general overbuilding activity in the recent years and also due to the effects of the financial crisis on the public balance of many countries.” Along with developing their capacity for patience, the pervasive uncertainty has also tested the companies’ commitment to the fundamental qualities that have long guided their growth, rather than adopt the short-term “bandaid” measures such as price cuts that may provide immediate cash, but sometimes lead to longer-term stability issues. “Customers’ expectations, in my opinion, have not changed,” Cammao says. “They look for high performing and reliable equipment, with a good level of technical support in terms of fast repairing and deliveries of spare parts.” Cammao adds, however, that because the breaker market now has an incredible number of competitors from all over the world, “some action and focuses are needed in order to compete in this new jungle. “Great attention to reliability and after-sale support is the only way to retain customers already using our equipment,” he says. “A company must also constantly evolve the technical features and performance of its products, as we have with our XP line of breakers, and keep pricing at reasonable level.” That kind of resolve has also worked in FRD’s case, van der Starre says. “From 2007 to 2009, we increased our market penetration for medium-size breakers in Spain, a very depressed market, from 5.9 to 9.9 percent not with substantial price reductions, but by maintaining our philosophy of high quality, low maintenance and good performance in connection with a stable dealer network,” he says. “This gives us great confidence that when market picks up, FRD will come out of the crisis stronger than before.” And rather than simply waiting for something to happen, many breaker manufacturers have been working activity to improve the quality and efficiency of their products so that as

the economy regains momentum and customers are ready to buy, they’ll find equipment well suited to their needs.

Atlas Copco boosts breaker power

Two new breakers in the FRD FX range.

For example, Atlas Copco Construction Tools has focused on reducing the total cost of ownership of their hydraulic breakers. “Only one third of the total lifecycle cost is the investment itself,” explains Torsten Ahr, the company’s Marketing Manager Hydraulic Attachments. “The rest is operator cost, energy consumption, parts wear, and so forth.” Evidence of Atlas Copco’s efforts can be found in three new heavy hydraulic breaker models. The HB 2000, with its service weight of 2000 kg, offers 10% more power than its predecessor, the HB 200. The new 3100 kg HB 3100 and 4700 kg HB 4700 deliver 5% and 13% more power than their predecessor models. All three breakers offer an improved power-to-weight ratio, enabling smaller attachments and carrier units to do more work. They are also equipped with Atlas Copco’s PowerAdapt system, which automatically shuts off the breaker in case of an overpowering through the carrier. “In order to ensure that our customers can make full use of the equipment in terms of efficiency and maximum power, this decision was a logical step,” Ahr says. Other features of Atlas Copco’s heavy-duty hydraulic breaker line are also found in the three new models. The VibroSilenced System protects operators against noise and vibrations, while AutoControl adapts the blow frequency and impact energy to the rock hardness as well as the integrated automatic lubrication system ContiLube ™ II. With StartSelect the operator can influence the starting and shutdown behaviour of the hydraulic breaker. The optional DustProtector protects the hydraulic breaker against dust and rock particles penetrating the lower breaker part. FRD FX breakers offer quieter operation FRD has introduced the five-model FX series hydraulic breakers, which feature a newly designed monobloc cylinder without through bolts, easy exchangeable wear parts, and more power, all with a reduction in noise levels. The FX series owe their quieter performance to FRD’s collaborative research with the Technical University of Tokyo. An entirely new impact mechanism minimizes the discharge of vibration to the excavator, which in turn reduces vibration stress experienced by operators. In addition, the combination of a redesigned body, fully closed frame with rubber plugged service points and new, worldwide patented rod arrangement considerably reduce sound levels. All FX series models are available with Standard, Silent,

such as demolition, highway and road projects, mining, and general construction projects. The DXB170 is suitable for 18 to 28 tonne excavators, while the DXB260 is designed for 27 to 37 tonne excavators. Doosan’s DXB technology ensures the carrier is protected through the reduction of pressure peaks. The breakers’ energy recovery and patented valve systems increase overall performance. Other features include a high-quality piston and cylinder manufactured to precise tolerances, and an advanced dampening system that protects the breakers against blank firing. The close tolerances of the parts used in the breakers also result in lower maintenance costs.

Compact breakers from Sandvik Sandvik’s revolutionary range of compact breakers combines simplicity and cost effectiveness, with a class-leading power-to-weight ratio. The BR111, BR222 and BR333 are designed to be matched with carriers in the 0,8 to 4 tonne range. All three have a streamlined and lightweight design that makes them ideally suited to applications in confined spaces, while constant blow energy maximizes the impact energy regardless of oil flow. Capable of accepting a wide range of oil flows, excellent back pressure acceptance and flange top mounting, the new models possess the functionality to be easily installed on a wide range of mini-excavators, skid steer loaders, and other compact carriers. With no tie rods, and only two moving parts, the new Sandvik compact breakers minimize maintenance, ownership and operating costs. The models require no periodical gas recharging, and can be resealed in just 45 minutes. The integrated single lower tool bushing can be replaced in just 10 minutes for faster servicing and increased operational uptime.

Durable Montabert Blue Line breakers To address the needs of entry-level hydraulic breaker users, Montabert has added the Blue Line range that features a simple, cost-effective design offering high performance and efficiency, durability and easy serviceability. tor control the movements of the piston, increasing the overall performance and efficiency through optimisation of the strike power of the breaker. The energy recovery system increases the strike power by using the energy generated by the piston rebound. This system allows an automatic increase of the breaker’s frequency when used on hard materials. The first model in the Blue Line range is the 1.7 tonne XL1700 breaker, which provides blow energy of 3400 J, a frequency of 600 blows/min and a tool diameter of 137 mm. The XL1700 can be used with excavators providing a minimum to maximum flow range of 100 to 150 l/min, and an operating pressure of 180 bars.

Allied Hy-Ram hammer boasts efficiency, automatic functions In the hydraulic hammer category, Allied Construction Products has introduced the Hy-Ram® HR Series hydraulic impact hammer. Based on the same proven design of other Allied products, the Hy-Ram offers a host of features for improved efficiency, including its innovative oil and gas operation. The Allied design of gas-assist using low pressure nitrogen improves the tool’s efficiency by reducing demand on the carrier’s hydraulic system. This eliminates dependency on hydraulic accumulators, which are used solely to eliminate hydraulic “spikes.” Pressurized oil is always present at the bottom of the piston, which prevents internal cavitation. Allied Hy-Rams can also be equipped with an optional AutoLube mounted on the hammer housing. This automatic system dispenses lubricant by the hammer’s vibration. The AutoLube uses a high-grade chisel paste in handy replaceable cartridges The Hy-Ram’s long-stroke design minimizes recoil, reduces vibration and eliminates mechanical springs. Medium and large models in the Hy-Ram series also have an automatic Auto-Stop feature that prevents blank-firing once the demolition tool has penetrated the material being broken, and downpressure is no longer applied. The Allied Hy-Ram hammers also feature a durable housing design that suspends the internal working body inside a full-box enclosure to protect the tool, reduce noise and minimize vibration and wear to the carrier. The durable housing design is enclosed at the bottom, and incorporates a heavy-duty Hardox rock claw. Shock-absorbing polyurethane acoustical inserts increase carrier endurance The Autocontrol feature in Hy-Ram models HR150 through HR 1200 automatically regulate blow energy and frequency , while the Autogrease system in models HR 200 through HR 1200 eliminates the need for manual greasing. The Hy Ram HR 75 and larger models feature an Accumulator that reduces stress on hydraulic components. The large, medium, small and mini-size Hy-Ram models are available in 12 different models, ranging from working weights of 265 to 8,375 pounds and tool diameters of 1.77 to 6.88 inches. Allied offers more than 2,500 installation kits to fit the Hy-Ram to virtually every make and model of carrier.

FRD’s XCENTRIC Ripper Another new hydraulic hammer is FRD’s excavator-mounted XCENTRIC Ripper, which was developed in cooperation with the Spanish engineering and manufacturing company Grado Cero. The XCENTRIC Ripper is designed to perform excavation and demolition in less time, for lower cost and with a minimum of noise. The tool features a patented reaction power accumulation technology, making it more productive in most applications then any hydraulic hammer available in the market. What’s more, the XCENTRIC Ripper can work in the most severe of conditions in tunnels, foundations and under water without the need for special modifications. A wide range of XCENTRIC Ripper models will be available, with 10 different sizes for excavators from 2 to 85 tonnes. The first three models to be introduced are the XR 6 G0 for

Many equipment companies have also upgraded their pneumatic breaker products. “The electro-pneumatic breakers hit the market a little over 15 years ago, greatly in response to the market’s request for breaking concrete in a manner with fewer accessories (compressors and hoses, etc.) that the hydraulic breakers and air tools need to operate,” says Bret Baldwin, Hilti’s Building Construction Trade Manager. “Additionally, for indoor work, electro-pneumatics became the tool of choice.” The latest iteration in that technology is Hilti’s new TE 3000-AVR Breaker, which boasts the power of an air tool, at the same weight level, without the need for an air compressor to deliver explosive breaking power and exceptional mobility. Weighing 65 pounds, the TE 3000-AVR delivers 50 foot-pounds of impact energy to break up to six tons of material per hour, at rate comparable with a 60- to 65-pound air tool. The TE 3000-AVR also offers contractors easy, flexible operation from anywhere on the jobsite. Be-

cause it does not require an air compressor, the TE 3000-AVR allows contractors to have their tool set up and working before the compressor is even towed to the location and hooked up. For maximum versatility, the TE 3000-AVR accepts standard 1-1/8 inch chisels, same as air-powered tools. In addition, the TE 3000-AVR incorporates Hilti’s subchassis active vibration reduction (AVR) system to dramatically cut the vibration passed along to the operator during operation, reducing fatigue and allowing them to work longer. An active cooling system reduces wear and tear on the motor, electronics and hammering mechanism. And, the TE 3000-AVR features a brushless SR motor that eliminates the need to replace carbon brushes — allowing longer intervals between service and twice the expected motor life. For smaller applications, there’s Hilti’s new TE1500-AVR. Ideal for everything from concrete foundation removal to digging in clay, to penetrations for pipes and electrical boxes, The TE1500-AVR also offers extended durability. With 22 foot-pounds of impact energy generated by a 1,800-watt motor, the TE 1500-AVR delivers up to 1,950 blows per minute to efficiently break up floors, slabs or foundations. However, all that power doesn’t come at the expense of operator comfort. The TE 1500-AVR offers a best-in-class weightto-power ratio, along with Hilti’s sub-chassis active vibration reduction (AVR) system that dramatically cuts the vibration

felt by the operator. This advanced design allows the operator to work longer and be more productive. Hilti also extended the definition of durability with the TE 1500-AVR. An active cooling system reduces wear and tear on the motor, electronics and hammering mechanism. Three-chamber sealing keeps dust out of the tool for longer life with fewer breakdowns. Also, the TE 1500-AVR features a brushless SR motor that eliminates the need to replace carbon brushes — allowing longer intervals between service and twice the expected tool life. For versatility, the TE 1500-AVR is compatible with a variety of TE-SP polygon self-sharpening chisels, which provide strong breaking power and stick less in concrete and masonry. Also compatible with the new breakers is the Hilti TE DRS-B Dust Removal System, which reduces cleanup time and captures dust for a better working environment. Hilti’s TE 1500-AVR is also backed by Hilti Lifetime Service, a unique service agreement that includes two years of no-cost coverage. Baldwin adds that for 2010 and beyond, “the market is asking for more, mainly a method for breaking concrete that is more productive, and a tool that is easier to use and maintain, and that cost less overall to operate.” Hilti’s response is the launching of its TE 3000.

Baumaschinen It is time again for Bauma, the global mega-show for construction machinery and equipment. This time, the show is expected to be even bigger in the number of exhibitors, exhibition space and visitors. PDi Magazine will be there in hall A1, stand number 132.

38

It is rather amazing that it is already time for the mega-show Bauma. This is one show that truly doesn’t disappoint anyone who attends. And this year, everything is bigger. The number of exhibitors are well over 3200 companies, and the volume of exhibition space has been increased to 555,000 m2. Although most of the world’s markets are either in the middle of or coming out of the worst economic crisis in years, Bauma is more focused on what contractors in the industry need to improve their work. That’s why it continues to grow and set new records of exhibitors, exhibition area and number of international visitors. And if previous shows are any indicator, the number of visitors will also increase this time. Bauma 2010 opens on Monday 19 April and closes on Sunday 25 April, and will be the biggest edition ever. The increases in exhibitors and exhibition space are a result of growing interest from countries such as China, Turkey and India. “In some cases we have received double the number of requests for exhibition space from these countries than in 2007,” says exhibition director Georg Moller. Exhibitors from Europe, for example, Italy, Great Britain and the Netherlands, will again be taking the top slots in Bauma’s international exhibitor ranking. All this is a strong indicator that the industry worldwide is looking forward with confidence to the leading world trade fair.

PDi 2-2010 is your guide

The issue of PDi that you are holding is the Bauma show issue. It was distributed before the show, and is being handed out at the PDi booth in hall 1, booth number 132, as well as at the Bauma international press stand. This entire issue is filled with information about Bauma’s exhibitors and the new products they are launching at the show. But PDi is only focusing on exhibitors that are related to the product areas covered by this magazine. Even though with this limitation, we cannot guarantee that we are able to cover everything. Still, we hope that PDi issue 2-2010 will be a good and useful guide about the news on the market, even if you are not visiting Bauma 2010.

Prospects for the building and construction industry worldwide in 2010 Thanks to extensive government economic stimulus programmes, aimed to a considerable extent at the construction sector, activity in construction has picked up in most industrial and emerging countries than the economy as a whole. It is expected that most countries will see a revival in activity in the building and construction sector in 2010, with accelerated growth to follow in 2011.

Europe In Europe, a slight fall of 1% in building production is still

n in Bavaria expected in 2010. But this is due solely to the poor development in commercial construction. Civil engineering, by contrast, is expected to grow by 2.7%, mainly because of the extensive economic stimulus programmes in many EU member states. In 2011, Europe-wide building investment is predicted to expand by 2%, again driven by 3% increased investment in civil engineering projects. The slight downturn in overall production in 2010 is due to the negative effect from countries such as Spain, Ireland, Finland and Portugal, where prices have fallen dramatically following the end of the boom in residential property. In the reform economies of Central Europe, however, growth in construction activity is set to expand by 6% as early as 2010, accelerating to 10% in 2011. The engine behind this growth will continue to be Poland. Russia has also been affected by the international economic crisis, coupled in this case with rapidly falling income for the state from energy exports, a result of falling prices on the world market. Nevertheless, building activity overall has stayed stable in 2009. However, a downturn of around 5% is expected for 2010, followed in 2011 by modest growth.

Overall China is coming through the global economic crisis much better than the industrialised and emerging economies. Economic research institutes are expecting real GDP in China to grow by 8% in both 2009 and 2010. In building investment, the growth is likely to be slightly higher still as the Chinese government is holding firmly to its ambitious investment programme in infrastructure. The strong dynamism on the Chinese construction market is also expected to

The Indian construction market is not of the same size as other markets, with the level of investment in the industry in 2008 coming in at around EUR130 billion. However, its rate of growth was almost as impressive as that of China. Between 1998 and 2008 activity in building and construction rose by around 140%, and this dynamic pace is set to continue. According to forecasts by the economic research institutes, real economic output in India is set to expand by 6% in both 2009 and 2010. In the current five-year plan to 2012, around EUR330 billion is being invested in the expansion of the country’s road and rail network, the construction of new sea ports and airports, and in improving energy and water supplies. During this period, growth in investment in construction is expected to reach around 10% per annum.

At around EUR730 billion, the building and construction market in the US remains the most important in the world. Following a downturn in the current year, real GDP is expected to rise again in 2010 by 1.5%. This means the US is emerging from recession more quickly than generally expected. Following the severe drop in building production in 2007 to 2009, a slight increase is expected next year, picking up strength in 2011. Government building activity will increase, particularly in civil engineering projects, thanks to the economic stimulus programmes. New residential construction is expected to stabilise, while a more marked downturn is expected in commercial construction.

Adamas

The Dutch manufacturer Adamas is well-known as a European Inan Makina B4.316/411 supplier of diamond tools and equipment for fast and easy access INDECO IND SPA F5.505/2 on the worksite. New from Adamas right now is the Eazy Saw rail guided handsaw. According to Adamas, the new saw is 100% safe INDEXATOR GmbH F8.N809/4 and can cut 21 cm in concrete and brickwork without fatiguing the ITALPUNTE Srl A3.654 operator. For smaller projects, the Eazy Saw is the perfect alternative JCB Deutschland F7.707/1 for petrol cut-off saws, chain- and ring saws. Since December of last year, Adamas has experienced the effects KEESTRACK F9.N916/5 of the construction industry’s global downturn. But instead of sitting Kleemann GmbH F10.1010 back and hoping for the best, Adamas has used the current situation Klindex Srl D2.119 as an opportunity for its R&D engineers to come up with something KOMATSU EUROPE B5.102/201 special to generate sales in these difficult times. The head office of Adamas is located in The Netherlands, KOMATSU EUROPE B5.104/203 where electric hand sawing has been extremely popular since the KOMATSU EUROPE B5.302/400 early 1980s. Electric wood saws are usually adapted for wet cutting KOMATSU EUROPE B5.304/402 in concrete with Ø300 or Ø350mm diamond saw blades, and used for small alterations and renovation jobs. Kranlyft F10.1003/1 As machines became more powerful in the last 10 years, KUBOTA A5.233/336 contractors modified them to cut with Ø500mm saw blades up KUBOTA F12.1211/3 to a depth of 20cm in concrete and brickwork. This situation was regarded as unsafe and therefore forbidden by health & safety organi“Liebherr-Intl A4.111 sations. Although electric wall saws are capable of cutting up to 20 cm deep, they are regarded as too big and heavy for these small jobs. “Liebherr-Intl F8.806 Adamas sales representatives in the Netherlands and Belgium “Liebherr-Intl F8.807 recognized this lingering market demand and used it to launch the “Link-Belt F11.1105/2 R&D project. Nine months of thinking, design development and fine tuning led to an innovative prototype named the “Eazy Saw.” Lissmac A1.221/324 The Eazy Saw consists of a 2200 Watt, 230 V electric drive Maeda Mini Cranes F10.1003/1 motor protected against overload by a thermal relay and a slip Mantovanibenne s.r.l. Practice tests show that the Eazy Saw is much easier to install than a wall saw that cuts two to three times slower. The Eazy Saw will make its international debut at BAUMA 2010 in Hall A1-144. Adamas is also launching a dust reduction device called Hurricane. The device reduces dust with water mist. The water mist is adjustable and protects the operators from harmful concrete dust on the building site.

CombiCutter. Weighing 6.5 tonnes, the new product is the heaviest cutter in the line and is designed for carrier units of the 58 to 85 tonne class. The CC 6000’s design is also in line with other CombiCutter models. The system with the two movable jaws and the two lifting cylinders has stood the test of time. It offers a constantly high crushing force throughout the entire closing process. And the combination of a single and double blade jaw arm provides maximum stability even under extreme loads. Universal jaws and steel cutting jaws are available for the CC 6000, which has been designed for heavy-duty industrial, bridge and building demolition jobs. Both cutter jaws can be fitted and removed as one unit because the coupling and positioning system holds both jaws together even after they have been removed. The cutter jaws, blades and teeth can be changed on site. Atlas Copco will also introduce the new hydraulic CombiCutter CC 650 with hydraulic rotation device. With its service weight of 630kg, the new CC 650 is a match for carriers in the 6-12 tonne weight class. The hydraulic rotation device allows endless 360º rotation of the attachment and quick and easy positioning of the CombiCutter, which has 45 tonnes of crushing force. The CC 650, which replaces the CC 550, can be used for light duty demolition work, and for internal reconstruction and gutting. Atlas Copco is also launching four new handheld hydraulic breakers with improved vibration characteristics. The handheld hydraulic breakers have just two moving parts. There is minimal wear and very few parts to service as moving parts operate in oil. Among these new hydraulic breakers is the model HB 3100 with PowerAdapt and optimized box design. PowerAdapt is a system that shuts down the hydraulic breaker in case the oil pressure becomes too high. This feature is particularly valuable if there is an improper carrier oil pressure setting. Conventional pressure relief valves used in hydraulic breakers continuously drain oil into the tank and waste energy. This affects the efficiency and profitability of the equipment. The improved hydraulic breaker guide system provides a better stability and resistance. The Non-Dust version of the HB 3100 is furnished with the all-round wear protection that is already featured in all of the dust versions of the HB series of hydraulic breakers. With its service weight of approximately 3.1 tonnes, the HB 3100 can be attached to carriers of the 30 to 52 tonne class. All proven features of Atlas Copco’s heavy-duty hydraulic

breaker line are also found in the new HB 3100, which replaces the HB 3000. Atlas Copco will also show the new series of Atlas Copco Cobra™ petrol drill and breakers, which was launched in January 2010. These new tools meet the stricter requirements of exhaust emissions set by the US Environmental Protection Agency. Purchasers of Atlas Copco equipment will also be pleased to learn that the company’s 1+2 programme extended warranty is now being offered for heavy hydraulic breakers. The programme includes a one-year standard warranty, plus two years free additional warranty.

Blastrac with Diamatic A company that is raising its profile in the industry is the US manufacturer Blastrac, which is using this increased attention to promote its Diamatic brand. Since World of Concrete 2009, we have seen a number of new products under both names. At Bauma, visitors can view the newest in a line of economical, highly productive shot blasters, floor grinders and polishing machines. Blastrac will also introduce a completely new grinding line that reflects both manufacturing quality and the most advanced, complete concrete grinding and polishing system in the industry today. In 2009, Blastrac restructured its manufacturing and sales operations, and experienced a decline in overall sales. However, the company expects to recoup the majority of that decline in 2010, in part because of its growing product line. Diamatic launched a number of new products or upgrades to existing products during the World of Concrete. New products include a planetary grinder, edger, micro-polisher and vacuum. The company also introduced a new, walk-behind planing machine, which features a gang saw diamond for planing down groves, exposing aggregate, or levelling a floor that has previously been remodelled. A texturing and pavement preservation product line, featuring new maintenance chemicals, densifiers and colours/dyes, was also released in January 2010. “The whole idea is to position ourselves as one of the top players in the polishing segment,

Breaker Technology Breaker Technology Inc. (BTI), has for decades been one of the largest suppliers of equipment and services for the construction, aggregate, demolition and mining industries. Applications range from primary and secondary sites involved in construction, demolition or recycling, to quarries and underground mining operations such as scaling and explosives loading. Technology plays a critical role in the company’s continued successes. BTI enjoys a reputation for engineering products with the most advanced technologies available, yet the resulting systems are remarkably easy to use. Its breaker systems, for example, literally have benchmarked reliability and performance across a broad range of applications. Similarly, its hydraulic breakers use sophisticated technology to produce a simple design. With only two internal moving parts, this line of breakers and attachments makes the operation of hydraulic equipment easy, flexible and reliable. Fieldproven and customer-sanctioned, BTI products are enthusiastically accepted as the standard for the industries they serve. In the spring of 1997 BTI made a commitment to implement a formal Quality Assurance System. On November 6, 1998 the facilities in Thornbury Ontario, and Riverside California were certified to ISO 9001:1994. In 2000, the International Standards Organization ( ISO ) revised the Standard to emphasize requirements for a Quality Management System rather than a Quality Assurance System. BTI made the transition to the ISO 9001:2000 Standard in June of 2001, receiving registration in October 2001, certificate #Q2233. BTI’s commitment to improve business performance, productivity and enhance customer satisfaction is reflected in this focus on continual improvement. At Bauma 2010 BTI will show their latest developments in terms of among other demolition equipment.

Powered by an efficient Kubota V3307-DITE3 55.4 kW Stage IIIA diesel engine, the S650 has a standard hydraulic flow of 87.1 l/min, with an optional high flow of 115.5 l/min. Able to travel at speeds up to 19.8 km/h, the loader’s traction is 15 to 20 percent greater than previous comparable models for greater pushing and digging power. The S650 has a height of 2065 mm, with an 1880 m wide, 3474 mm long bucket. The bucket hinge pin height is 3149 mm. Its innovative engineering design helps increase uptime by providing for simplified maintenance and serviceability. Bobcat has also introduced the new TR05 Tilt-Rotator for its E32 and E35 excavators, both of which will be shown at Bauma. The TR05 Tilt-Rotator helps maximise an excavator’s productivity and versatility with its easy adaptability to a wide range of attachments such as grading and digging buckets, cable buckets, asphalt cutters, ripper teeth and hydraulic grabs. Bobcat adapted the proven ‘Plug-and-Play’ technology from its compact loaders to ensure maximum precision and efficiency for the TR05 Tilt-Rotator. For example, a built-in Attachment Control Device (ACD) receives its information from a controller in the machine via the same type of 7-pin connection. The standard joysticks on the excavator are replaced with dedicated Tilt-Rotator joysticks, which incorporate all additional functions and allow the operator to engage or disengage the Tilt-Rotator functions safely and easily. Unlike other systems on the market, the Tilt-Rotator can be operated immediately upon installation of the Deluxe Control kit (including the joysticks and controller) on the excavator. No calibration or fine-tuning is needed on the job site. Bobcat will also show its extended range of bucket attachments with the launch of a new family of skeleton buckets for Bobcat compact loaders and mini-excavators. The skeleton buckets are ideal for landscaping and general site clean-up applications. They are also suitable for demolition and refurbishment work, recycling and beach-cleaning. Four new skeleton buckets, ranging in width from 157 to 208 cm, cover most of the machines in the Bobcat compact loader range as well as the T2250 telehandler. For 1.5- to 8-tonne Bobcat mini-excavators, there is a wide selection of skeleton buckets to fit pin-on, Klac and Lehnhoff couplers. The skeleton buckets feature bolt-on teeth, with space between tines varying from 57 to 71 mm, depending on the bucket size.

Cedima Since 1984, Cedima GmbH from Celle has been developing and distributing diamond tools and machines for the construction industry. Having collected design and operational know-how for many years, the company today produces a variety of diamond tools and machines offering unequalled opportunities for improved productivity. The products are exported in more than 50 countries. Various distributors and service partnerships throughout the world help keeping delivery and service times as short as possible. In Germany, a powerful sales force team takes care of our customers’ needs. Quality is one of Cedima’s most important maxim. Business processes consequently directed to quality assurance have become a matter of course. These efforts have been rewarded already in 1997 with the certification as per DIN ISO 9001. In Celle, a highly qualified team constantly works to provide the suitable tool for each material. The samples collected worldwide by both customers and staff lining the shelves of our research facility. In a laboratory equipped with the latest technology the composition of the samples is examined, thus gaining necessary information for the development of a successful diamond tool. There will be a line of products in the Cedima stand at Bauma, led by the launch of a new way to eliminate over cuts. Creating rectangular cuts in brickwork or ferroconcrete walls is part of the daily challenge of professionals in drilling and sawing. Generally, these cuts are generated with wall saws. Due to the geometry of a diamond saw blade, however, overlaps can occur on the edges that need to be closed after the operations. This process is not always easy, given the size of the overlap and the weight of the saw. Generally in these cases, operators drill holes in the corners and chisel out the remaining curves afterward. Cedima GmbH now offers a more efficient solution that utilizes a high-frequency electric chain saw and wall saw, resulting in a clean cut-out without a subsequent treatment (see article page 78 for more info).

Conjet range and new products The hydrodemolition machinery manufacturer Conjet will show its new Robot 324 and 365 MPA as well as the new Jetframe Nalta at Bauma. Some of the new features of the Robot 324 are a completely new front with oscillating cassette and feed beam. This makes it possible to mount the arm with 300 mm offset on both sides, which increases the reach on mainly vertical surfaces including below the robot. The angle of attack can be set to ±45°, which will improve the reach into corners. The front end of the robot has a more compact design so that it can be used in tighter areas. The feed beam can be tilted from -10° to 90°, which means that the robot can perform hydrodemolition in front. In addition, the Robot 324 and 365 features an upgraded control system that offers absolute position sensors. Another

option is the ability to fit a mast on the Robot for extended reach below the robot. Conjet will also show the new Jeframe 101 Nalta at Bauma. Conjet Nalta is the world’s smallest and lightest hydrodemolition unit. It replaces the dangerous and far less productive hand-lancing method of hydrodemolition. Instead, the ‘Nalta’ operator remotely controls all functions of the Jetframe 101 a safe distance from the working area.

Dr. Schulze Dr.Schulze GmbH is a German manufacturer of machinery and diamond tools for construction and stone jobs, with 25 years of experience in the business. The company owns four plants in Germany where it produces all its concrete sawing equipment and tools. Dr.Schulze is particularly known for its Meissner kombi systems, which allow the contractor to switch between various drilling and sawing operations virtually in no time. But it is another sawing solution from Dr.Schulze that is in the spotlight right now: hydraulic wall sawing system SW800, soon to be showcased at BAUMA. Andrei Bushmarin reports. Dr.Schulze’s hydraulically-driven SW800 is designed for wall sawing with 800 to 1600 mm blades. Equipped with a swivel lever, the is powered by an A23 hydraulic power pack. Two of the well-acknowledged advantages of hydraulic equipment— high reliability and serviceability—are especially true of the SW800, which was developed to provide absolutely failure-free performance. Simplicity of operation is another plus of the new wall saw. Blade feed and cutting depth are regulated by a hydraulic system that allows stepless adjustment of the operating parameters from 0 to max.

According to the manufacturer, the best thing about the SW800 is the almost complete absence of any electrical and electronic components that are always likely to fail under extreme operating conditions such as high humidity, vibrations, voltage and temperature drops. The basic version of the SW800 features only a wye-delta switch and, upon customer request, can be further completed with a remote control that is as dependable as the saw itself. Having jettisoned vulnerable electronics in favor of a more reliable hydraulic set-up, Dr.Schulze was faced with the task of developing an absolutely new automatic system that would regulate the speed of blade feed and lowering. To solve this problem, the manufacturer devised a hydraulic system that automatically varies cutting speed depending on the operating parameters (e.g., concrete hardness, degree of reinforcement, blade condition, cutting depth etc.). This ingenuous solution prevents the blade from getting jammed in the cut, and allows optimal sawing performance at all times. Compact, lightweight and big-wheeled, the A23 hydraulic power pack is easily transportable to the job site. The power pack is capable of operating at an oil flow rate of 55 l/min and a pressure of 250 bar, generating a hydraulic power of 23kW. This energy is passed onto the blade with virtually no losses via a state-of-the-art reducer built into the swivel lever. With the required 32A (400V) electrical protection, the new wall saw can be used on any construction site without limitation. The power pack is equally suitable for wire sawing and core drilling systems. The saw’s cutting head comes complete with lightweight, yet robust aluminum rails of various lengths reinforced with steel plates and a tooth rack for extended service life. Another new feature are the self-adjusting pulleys that do not require periodical re-adjustment,

and allow simultaneous usage of worn-out and new rails. Dr.Schulze has also beefed up its range of floor saws with the new FS600D model. Powered by a 22 hp diesel engine HATZ, the FS600D is designed to cut concrete and asphalt with up to 600 mm blades to a depth of 230mm. Blade feed and cutting depth are hydraulically controlled. A stripped-down version of the machine with manual downfeed is also available. When considering all of Dr.Schulze’s many inventions, it’s helpful to remember the Meissner kombisystem. By now, the system-transformer with an almost unlimited number of sawing and drilling options has been successfully utilized at hundreds of jobs in the different corners of the world. Such varied and challenging projects as concrete coring with 2m drill bits, radial sawing of 1.5 to 6 m pipes, and rock drilling with outsized drill bits to big depths have been completed using the same Meissner system. Another Meissner job involved making 5 x 5 m openings in ceiling slabs with an X-Y-Z-saw, with further slicing of the cut concrete to blocks of pre-determined size. All the cutting was performed without having to repeatedly set-up the saw, which was fixed to the floor with anchor bolts prior to the start of the job. This clearly proves Meissner’s amazing flexibility. Dr.Schulze welcomes Bauma visitors to check out these and other products at its booth A1.135 in Hall A. Dr.Schulze’s full range of core drilling, floor, wall and wire sawing systems will be on display, along with milling and grinding machinery, and diamond consumables. The unit is also equipped with an electrical outlet to conveniently connect electric tools and machines (max 2000 W).

www.dustcontrol.com EDT EURODIMA

The new “SAFE GUARD” blade guard series from EDT EURODIMA features increased stability, safety, lightweight materials and easy handling. The company’s developers achieved a trend-setting construction by fulfilling the underlying standards “lightweight and stable.” Creating an improved blade guard was an intensive project for EDT EURODIMA’s research and development staff, which collaborated with the sales staff to analyze market information and user requirements to develop an optimal, cost-effective solution. The team found that by specifying a more lightweight material with a different thickness, the blade guard’s weight could be reduced by up to 45 %. For example, the new blade guard for a diamond blade Ø 1600 mm weighs only 16 kg, compared with the 29-kg weight of existing models. The lower diameter guards are also easily manageable, approximately 12 kg for a 1200 mm blade, and 9.5 kg for an 800 mm blade. Although the Safe Guard is lighter, its special construction of steel sheet profiles, aluminium plates, and brackets with highstrength steel provide the necessary rigidity to give users many years of safe, durable service. Tests and initial field uses of the Safe Guard verify that the lighter, redesigned product is easier to handle, and exceeds all existing performance specifications. The result is a valuable new accessory to the high-frequency Braxx system. Another enhancement to the Braxx control series is the new Tornado BC321 wall saw. Similar to its predecessor, the BC320, the new model features many important features: • Improved automatic operation makes work easier. At full speed, the machine regulates its use of power on different materials. • Design improvements have reduced the weight of the BC321 by approximately 27 % compared with the BC320. • Easily visible illuminated displays allow operators to monitor the phase outlet in the power supply. • Plugs are positioned in a notch on the saw’s narrow side, minimising the risk of damage.

Heger Diamond Tools In PDi issue 1-2010, a large report about Heger was published. The report mentioned that the big news from Heger at Bauma would be the launch of the Heger Titan Xflow and Heger Titan HeroX. The Heger Titan Xflow is a combination of Titan maX angled segment design and the dotted segments. The dots reduce the friction and improve the water flow. The new tools reach high forward speeds with significant lifetime increase. Due to the small slots between the segments, the blade is vibration free to preserve operator and equipment. At Bauma 2010, Montabert will launch the new Blue Line range of hydraulic breakers and a new range of crusher buckets designed for excavators from 8 to over 35 tonnes. The new products are designed for applications in demolition, recycling, quarrying, construction and refurbishment. The new Blue Line breaker, which complement Montabert’s existing family of breakers, is designed as entry-level product range. Their

simple, cost-effective design offers high levels of performance and efficiency, plus durability and easy serviceability. The keys to the Blue Line breakers’ high performance are a patented main valve, and an innovative energy recovery system. The main valve and nitrogen chamber accumulator control piston movements, optimising the breaker’s strike power. The energy recovery system further increases the strike power by using the energy generated by the piston rebound. This system automatically increases the breaker’s frequency when used on hard materials.

Saint-Gobain Abrasive Nimbus Diamond Tools, part of Saint Gobain will use Bauma to demonstrate and show several new and recently introduced products at Bauma The engineers at Norton-Nimbus have developed an alternative solution for coolant, with foam replacing water. This innovative method was developed and patented by our research and development centre in Japan for wire sawing, and has now been adapted to drilling. This foam drilling unit is composed of a compressor generating specially developed and environmentally friendly foam through the drilling motor. The foam is then vacuumed and reduced back to water. The density of the foam has been designed to allow fast drilling and efficiently carry the slurry out of the hole. Because of its density compared with water, the foam will not spread through cracks in the concrete nor splatter around when drilling. This virtually eliminates the need to protect the job site before drilling, and the time devoted to cleaning up afterward. As a result, customers will realize substantial savings in their labour costs. Those interested in taking a closer look at this system will be able to see a live demonstration at Bauma. Norton-Nimbus has also launched several other innovations in the past months for drilling applications, including the X3 laser welded core and the new and revolutionary O’Tip. To answer the specific needs of hand-held drilling, Norton-Nimbus just launched the X2 core drill. As with the rest of the range, the X2 is manufactured in our Burgess Hill, UK, plant and laser-welded for improved performance and safety. The big difference is a thinner segment. Compared with the market standard thickness of 3,5mm, the 2.6mm thick segments used on the X2 not only allow for much faster drilling, but also provide a much easier and comfortable solution for the operator. Small diameter drilling is carried out with thin wall crowns, manufactured in one continuous ring with waterways cut out in the diamond section. To comply with safety standards, the mechanical principals for producing crowns force manufacturers to respect a ratio of 1 to 4, where the height of the full crown cannot be more than four times its thickness. This is why all crowns in the market are 10mm high, with only 7mm of actual diamond cutting section. Norton-Nimbus has developed and patented a new production process where crowns are no longer manufactured as one piece, but

Scanmaskin Scanmaskin, the Swedish manufacturer of floor grinding and polishing machines and tools introduced a number of new products during 2009, many of which were featured in issue 1-2010 of PDi. The most recent developments are the Scan Combiflex 500 PD concrete floor grinder with the new Power Drive, the new ScanDust 6000 dust extractor and the new Scan Combiflex Handyman mini and handheld grinder. PDi has also learned that Scanmaskin has entered a special co-operative agreement with the manufacturer Tyrolit to produce concrete floor grinding and polishing machines and equipment for the diamond tool manufacturer. More news from Scanmaskin will be announced at Bauma. as several segments assembled together through a special densification process. Because the above-mentioned ratio no longer applies, the new Norton-Nimbus TWICs will be offered in 13mm of full diamond height, thus almost doubling the market standard. This new densification process will virtually eliminate the risk of cracks in the crowns, and allow differentiation in the shape. The wider waterways of the Norton-Nimbus TWICs will also provide a much faster drilling and more efficient water flow. The better evacuation of slurry from the cut will increase its life. The TWICs will initially be offered in diameters ranging from 18 to 50 mm.

But the word ‘Bauma’ worked its usual magic, leading Solga Diamant to offer a presentation of its latest products for PDi’s Bauma Special. As a diamond tool manufacturer, Solga Diamant focuses on core drilling, wall sawing, and wire sawing. For drilling tools, the company develops a wide range of tooling with different bonds for high-performance coring in every imaginable type of concrete. For example, n.6 bond allows a diamond utilization rate of about 68% on limestone-based concretes. For drilling in siliceous concretes, Solga has developed special protective bond n.3 that helps keep the diamond utilization rate above 30%. Specification n.1, which is devised to sustain high-impact loads, makes a perfect solution for heavy-duty coring with powerful hydraulic rigs. Laser welding segments on to drill cores further enhances tool performances. Another distinctive feature of Solga’s tooling is segment auto-dressing. This feature helps facilitate the start-up phase of drilling by gradually exposing diamonds at a rate that depends on the drilling speed and machine power. Solga’s developments in the field of wall sawing focus on achieving high cutting speed and durability of a diamond blade. Blade specification is designed on the basis of machine power rate and type of the material to be cut. For machines with under 10kW capacity, Solga offers MR spec with abrasive diamond grit. For efficient wall sawing with more powerful machines, impact resilient blade S8019 is available. The segments’ U-shaped geometry allows two points of contact with the material during the cutting, thus making it faster and smoother. Solga Diamant constantly updates and expands its line of diamond wires. The latest example is a new sintered spec G25. Developed in partnership with Solgallied, the wire is claimed to surpass electroplated wires in terms of cutting speed and life. This high-performance and easy-to-use wire is manufactured by an in-house sintering process called H.I.P. As any other Solga wire, it is equipped with high-strength steel ropes that effectively transmit the bending moment and allow the wire to glide easily along the pulleys. To keep improving the quality of its tooling, Solga Diamant pays meticulous attention to customer feedback. Being customersavvy is important for the Spanish company that strives to become the industry benchmark for quality and reliability.

Pentruder Pentruder, the Swedish developer and manufacturer of professional concrete sawing and drilling systems, has gone through a lot of changes in the past. And the changes are all about expansion: the number of products, development and production capacity and marketing and sales. Pentruder has such a high

pace of developing new products that it sometimes is difficult for a magazine focused on this industry to keep track of and follow up the new products. Even though Pentruder’s hydraulic machines are still available, it is the HF (High Cycle) equipment that makes up the majority of sales. The range contains of six HF saws and three hydraulic wall saws. A new Pentruder 3P8 HF wire saw with extraordinary wire storage is drawing a lot of attention. Small and light electric motors with the HF technique, plus a new contact system in combination with the Tractive gearbox principles, are at the heart in the Pentruder equipment. Six HF wall saws, including the new 8-20iQ and CBK, the fairly new wire sawing unit 3P8 and the brand new modular concrete cutting system complete the current line. These can also be used with the Pentruder standard rail system. All of the equipment can be integrated with each other, freeing contractors from the need to bring a lot of equipment to site to carry out most types of work. One of Pentruder’s latest new items is the Core EZ core drilling system, which contains different modules that integrate with the new MCCS system. It is a completely new principle for core drilling with a completely new and universal drill motor with interchangeable gearboxes and different transmissions. The Core EZ places the power in the centre where it is needed. A traditional core drill rig counteracts, as the drill stand needs A core drilling system from Pentruder to be placed on one side of the core bit. As in operation. the power increases, the whole unit wants to move sidewise. With the new Core EZ core drilling system, the drill motor and the stand guarantee that the power is fully used where it is needed in the centre. Also new is a simple and easily maneuvered quick coupler, which makes the change of drill bit fast and easy. There is also a chain saw module under development. Pentruder is also working on a very interesting flat saw equipment project. At Bauma Pentruder will show several true example of modularity with the new Pentruder saw track as both drill rig and wire saw rig. It is a very stable, light weight and easy-touse system. The Pentruder Modular Concrete Cutting System In this corner a (MCCS) will bring true modularity to the concrete cutting bunch of examcontractor. With the same high-frequency power pack, cables, ples of products developed and remote control and HF-motor, and the same track system, the manufactured by Solga Diamant in contractor will be able to wall saw, wire saw and drill. Spain. The new line of single- and three-phase drill motors, which will be available later this year, are running directly on the saw track, eliminating the carriage that normally runs on the column. At Bauma, Tractive will also introduce a new Pentpak 418SL high-frequency power pack. Designed for up to 18 kW HF-motors, the power pack weighs only 16 kg. With the introduction of the Pentpak 418SL, Tractive will standardize on the Pentpak 427, which can run all HF-motors and all machines. But what has been mentioned is hardly the last word from the Pentruder founder and 66 PDi • Issue 2 - 2010 • Bauma Special • April - May

owner Anders Johnsen. There will undoubtedly be a lot more novelties to take a look at in the Pentruder booth at Bauma. And it’s also worth mentioning is that Pentruder has started its own sales and service companies in the US, UK, Norway and Japan. Pentruder Japan Co,. Ltd is the most recent subsidiary.

Don’t forget the IACDS Bauma seminar The first IACDS seminar will be held at Bauma under the title ‘The Very Best of Diamond Technology’. It will take place in Hall B 1, Conference room B 11, at 10.00 to 14.00 on Friday 23 April. The subjects that will be covered are as follows: 10.00 “Dry coring and dry wire sawing in reinforced concrete” by Martin Godickemeier of Hilti.

introduce probably the widest range of new products ever. All of the novelties covered in an extensive report in PDi issue 1-2010 will be on the stand. One of the features of Tyrolit’s display will be a high-frequency wall saw line featuring a new built-in gearbox. The wallsaw, named WSE1620***, will be the biggest in the line. Also to be introduced at Bauma is the new WCE14*** wire saw and a drilling gearbox, both of which are part of a new modular system using the same driving unit. Tyrolit will also launch the new 11 HP FSG 513*** floor saw. This robust machine provides optimized cutting, more application options and increased safety. Also new is the DME75UW*** drill motor for drilling applications in reinforced concrete, and for very large diameter core drills. Tyrolit is also launching a new series of drill rigs comprising four models and six designs. The series contains the DRU160***, DRU250***, DRA250***, DRU400***, DRA400*** and DRA500***. All rigs come with the combi-foot system. Apart from the DRU160***, all drill rigs in the new range have the ModulDrill quick fixing system that guarantees fast, secure drill motor mounting. The other models also have a twin-speed feed gear for greater ease of use. Tyrolit is also adding the drilling system DRS160** to its existing range of 11 models. The DRS160** can drill holes up to 160 mm. Tyrolit will also introduce a new floor saw to the European market. Named the FSG5135, the floor saw was developed and produced in the US by the Tyrolit company Diamond Products. Tyrolit is also launching a new series of Premium diamond wires for concrete and steel. The new series meets the highest demands for quality, efficiency and safety and copes with every concrete cutting challenge. In addition

Tyrolit has developed TGD® technology aimed at making concrete cutting faster, more efficient and more economical. During recent years several new diamond grain distribution technologies have been released by several of the world’s diamond tool manufacturers. Tyrolit has applied its TGD Technology to take grain distribution one step further. According to Tyrolit, this technology is not just about distributing the diamonds according to a certain controlled pattern, nor is it solely about the diamonds. With TGD, the abrasive diamond grains are distributed optimally in the segment. As a result, a consistently high cutting performance can be achieved over the lifetime of the tool. This decisively improves the cutting speed, service life and versatility of the Tyrolit premium tools, and eliminates any possible variations in performance. The patented TGD technology is already available on Tyrolit floor saw blades, and will be released at Bauma for wall saw blades. Also worth mentioning is that Tyrolit is once again organising the well-received Tyrolit Cutting Pro Competition. Throughout 2010, national qualifications and finals will be held in various parts of Europe, leading up to the grand final in Innsbruck in January 2011.

South Korea enjoys the welldeserved reputation of being one of the world’s centres of diamond tool production. The country is teeming with manufacturers that have strong technical knowledge and proven expertise in the business. But even against this highly competitive background, Shinhan Diamond Industrial Co., Ltd. has managed to establish itself as a major player and one of the most trusted names in Korea. Andrei Bushmarin reports. Shinhan Diamond Industrial Co. was started in 1978 by Mr. Shin Kyung Kim who remains President of the corporation. Although Shinhan carved out a sizeable niche in the diamond business, its interests reach far beyond just diamond tools.

volume of ARIX products in Europe over year ago. Five years after the release of the first ARIX products, Shinhan has come up with its second revolutionary version of the diamond array technology, “ARIX Generation-II.” The follow-up is more advanced technologically than the previous version, with enhanced metallurgy and a better control over diamond positions. The new sleek design of segments is an improvement over the original ARIX products, both aesthetically and functionally. The segments are now available with a wider range of bonds that are exclusively developed for the array-type tools, providing stronger adhesion to diamond particles for a longer life. Another advantage of the upgraded ARIX technology is that it offers a unique and different segment design for each group of diamond products. “ARIX GenerationII” tools will be first unveiled to a worldwide audience at BAUMA, at Shinhan’s stand No 511 in hall A1.

Post-BAUMA plans When Europe’s biggest industrial show is over, Shinhan will continue pursuing its product development program, which consists of three major categories. The first includes new high-end tools for construction jobs— blades for floor and road saws, wall saw blades, drill bits, and diamond wires. Shinhan will also develop diamond products for processing natural and artificial stone, and hard tiles. The third product group includes laser-welded blades for hand-held applications, both conventional and ARIX-based.

A New Euro Most companies sometimes come to a point where they need to plan carefully how to get to the next level. The two Swedish demolition and recycling contractors LODAB Demolition and Entreprenad AB Sven Segerström are good examples. Not only have they taken their companies to a new level, they merged them in the new formation Demolition Company Lodab & Segerström AB, shortened to DEMCOM AB.

Together, LODAB and Entreprenad AB Sven Segerström represent more then 75 years of demolition and recycling knowledge. Both are two of Sweden’s biggest demolition companies. LODAB had a turnover in 2008 of around EUR 20 M, and Segerström around EUR 8 M. Together they form DEMCOM, a new company with offices in Stockholm, Örebro and Fagersta. DEMCOM’s expected turnover for 2010 may well be as much as EUR 25 M.

Many reasons for merger Both companies has known each other for several years, and often competed on the same projects. They are approaching a generation shift with one of the owners reaching retirement age. The biggest reason that the two companies put their resources together, though, is to become stronger and better. “We have to think in long terms,” says Johan Segerström, vice president of DEMCOM. “Each of the two companies will have difficulties to grow by themselves. But as one company, we can concentrate in what we are good at, develop that and also offer a bigger range of equipment. With more machinery and

more people, we can take on more large, medium and small projects at the same time, which was impossible before.” Lars-Olov Dahl, founder of LODAB Demolition, adds, “We are facing a trend that the projects become bigger and more demanding. We are used to that, but if we want to stay in that league we need to adapt. We must have the power to educate our personnel further, invest in new and more efficient machinery, and be ahead of new regulations in terms of environmental and safety aspects, and so forth. Together, we have a very good chance to not only stay in that division but also lead it.” “As two individual companies we were also more wounrable,” says Sven Segerström founder of Entreprenad AB Sven Segerström. “Economic slopes like the one we are experiencing right now we believe is easier to cope with as DEMCOM then as two separate companies and still move further.”

All sectors improved DEMCOM was founded at the end of 2009, and is now in the start-up process. It will probably take up to the summer before everything is running smoothly. The fleet is now being optimized. Some machines and equipment need to be sold out, while others need to be purchased. But in general, they are rather well set in terms of the fleet. The personnel remains the same, and has even increased a bit. DEMCOM totals approximately 100 persons. The fact that DEMCOM now has five persons working as calculators on new project is a good example of how the new company has far more capacity. When it comes to the machine and equipment fleet, DEMCOM has about 100 machines divided in excavators, compact loaders, wheel and front loaders, cranes, trucks, dumpers, mine dumpers, mobile crushers and screens, windscreens and several more types. Thirty-five of the excavators are fully fitted for demolition purposes, while seven of the machines are high-rise excavators from 21 m up to 45 m. DEMCOM has also a number of Brokk demolition robots, but has also started to use remote controlled Take Job machines as well as they are equipping a 46 t Volvo excavator with remote control. When its come to attachments, all each of the 35 demolition-fitted excavators has at least four attachments, divided in hammer, crusher, pulverizers and sorting grab. They also have tenfold of steel shears up to 10 t. Overalll the attachments range in weight from 200 kg to 12 t. Also, the compact loaders are equipped with different types of attachments. The company recently also purchased a couple NPK S90C—the largest NPK crusher, which manages to cut through 2 m thick concrete. It is probably the biggest crusher in the Nordic region. DEMCOM also works with decontamination and soil remediation contractors, and has specialized equipment for this sort of service including “Ferrari fans,” suction trucks, special equipment for PCB decontamination, etc.

Ready for more big projects at the same time With the new set up in DEMCOM, the company is ready to go after the really large projects, which is also the purpose of the company. “DEMCOM can offer an overall solution including everything related to demolition like recycling, dismantling,

opean Giant decontamination work, industrial clean-up, concrete sawing and drilling...you name it,” says DEMCOM President Stefan Petersson. “Our constant goal is to be in front offering top class service in all sectors related to our profession,” he adds. “We have knowledge and machinery to take on really big jobs and run several at the same time. But this doesn’t mean that we say no to smaller jobs,” says Lars-Olov Dahl. “We are there for everybody. With a big equipment fleet we now have the possibility to place the right type of machines From left to right the DEMCOM executives; Lars-Olov Dahl, founder of LODAB Demolition and Senior Advisor in DEMCOM, Johan Segerström, vice President DEMCOM, Sven Segerström, founder Entreprenad AB Sven Segerström and Senior Advisor in DEMCOM and Stefan Petersson President of DEMCOM.

and tools on the job, not too big and not too small. This is beneficial for the client. It’s the opposite when you are a smaller company. With a smaller machine range, you are maybe forced to use a too big machine that costs too much on a small job.” In general, DEMCOM is focusing on three client groups: industry, building and property companies and infrastructure companies. The industry clients, like power, steel, cement and paper producers, are dominating to some 60 %. The remaining 40 % is divided between the others. “But everything depends of course of the market,” says Johan Segerström. “Right now the industry sector is a very strong client, but these things can change and we want to be quick to adapt to new market situations.” In general, the business concept in DEMCOM is the same as in the companies it was merged from. Demolition is number one and dominating, followed by recycling, decontamination service, soil remediation, concrete sawing and drilling and related services. But DEMCOM would like to develop the recycling service by investing in equipment in order to increase its waste refinement capabilities. “All sorts of waste material like scrap metal and other were sold to be refined,” says Lars-Olov. “Now we want to do part of the refining ourselves. In the future and to some extent already today, we are able to take care of the refining process ourselves. We have invested in more screening and separation equipment.” The DEMCOM home market is Sweden, but they hope that it won’t be long before the entire Nordic region is considered “home” as well. “I think we have a good position for this,” says Sven Segerström. “We have a lot of contacts in all Nordic countries and we get continuously new projects to calculate.” But DEMCOM is not afraid to take on jobs outside the Nordic region and that is also part of the plan.

PDi • Issue 2 - 2010 • Bauma Special • April - May

“We are ready to travel worldwide if we get the right type of job,” says Lars-Olov. “But more distant project need to have a certain size as it is not worth to travel far away with a lot of equipment for a rather small job. But where special knowledge and special equipment is needed, we are the right type of contractor for the job.” Already, DEMCOM has received several requests from central European countries such as the UK and France, and even from more distant countries. They also have a close co-operation with a US company that has contacts all over he world. But priority number one is the Nordic countries. In the near future, the plan is to start up subsidiaries in Sweden, with others to follow in the other Nordic countries. “We want to be well represented in Sweden, from north to south. To achieve this we will either start up local offices on our own or acquire a local player,” says Johan Segerström.

Several large projects running Even though the market still is rather difficult, DEMCOM expects to reach approximately EUR 25 M in 2010. In the next three years, the goal is to reach EUR 30 M, and increase the staff to up around 120. “To continue increase from that level we must extend our operations outside Sweden,” says Johan. “If we can do that and keep the same level of competence as well as a comprehensive machine fleet I think we a good potential to become one of the leading demolition and recycling contractors in Europe.” When PDi met with the three DEMCOM directors, the company had around 20 large projects running in different parts of Sweden. Four of them where larger industry projects. Among them are two large sport arena projects and another four larger infrastructure projects, all in Stockholm; a large PCB decontamination project that covers all of Sweden that will continue for another year; and a large runway project for Stockholm’s international airport in Stockholm.

While OilQuick will not show any new items itself, the OEM product OQB 180, made for Hitachi, will be demonstrated in the Kiesel Group booth. OilQuick has made the quick coupler models OQB 100, 125 and 180 for Kiesel.

is currently the European market, but other continents are becoming more and more interested as well. “US contractors are still rather hard to convince as they tend to like using one machine and one tool, resulting in a lot of machines on the worksite costing a lot of money, and polluting just as much,” says Henrik. “But we are convinced that we will increase the market share in the North America through our recently opened a distributor in Canada,” Åke adds. Today, OilQuick has an annual turnover of some EUR 7,4 M, employs 21 persons and has an export level of some 80 %. The company has about 15 distributors with service centers around the world. Education in how to work with the system is carried out both by the distributors and OilQuick itself. OilQuick has a good pace despite the recession and business is good. “We believe we can double our turn over in three years and triple in five years,” says Henrik. “But the increase of turnover goes just as much for the contractor,” adds Åke. “When the contractors realize how they loose money every day they continue use the conventional method, they become OilQuick users and see the results for themselves.” Many well-known European demolition contractors already use OilQuick systems on the major part of their excavator range. Some example of companies are DEMCOM, Rivtjänst i Norr in Sweden; AF Decom, PV and Dokken in Norway; Preben Hockerup and Hvidberg in Denmark; and Eberhardt, Straback and Lemle in Germany to name a few.

In terms of competition, OilQuick is not that worried. The system is well-patented, and OilQuick is by far the world leader. “Some try to copy it of course but we have put so many years of design and development behind our solutions so it is seldom a copy works properly,” Henrik says with a smile. “Liebherr is making a quick coupler for their machines on a license from us, and there are a few others too, but none like OilQuick. Åke Sonerud points out that OilQuick sits on a unique well of knowledge which he believes is the reason the the system has been so well-positioned. “The machine manufacturer knows the machines out and Mikael Carlberg, responsible for the machine fleet at DEMCOM AB is very satisfied with OilQuick. “Once you have invested in OilQuick you never want to go back to a conventional system”, he says.

Some quick facts about OilQuick AB The company OilQuick AB in Hudiksvall, Sweden actually dates back to 1952 when John Sonerud, father of Åke and grandfather of Henrik, started a company together with his brothers Gottner and Erik. Their business concept was to act as an intermediary between buyers and sellers for secondhand agricultural machines, fodder, etc. During the mid to late 50s the range had been extended to include motor saws, freezers, fridges and even television sets for a short period. The brothers also acquired secondhand Ferguson tractors from England. In 1957, brothers Gottner and Erik left the business, and John established Soneruds Maskin AB. At the end of the 50s agriculture was not profitable in Sweden, and sales of agricultural machines slowed down. John decided instead to start selling and, later, manufacture the Hymas excavator. Sales of the Hymas excavator quickly grew. Between 1974 and 1979, production reached 600 machines a year. In 1972, the company was sold and John Sonerud continued to work in the parent company Soneruds Maskin AB. For some years, different product were manufactured and sold. In 1978 and the winter of 1979, Soneruds Maskin AB was converted into a development and sales company, with the focus on its own patented accessories for backhoe-loaders and excavators. Manufacturing would no longer take place in-house, but would be placed with local subcontractors. At the same time, the Hymas sales operation was wound up. The first product was the “Grab John,” an excavator bucket with built-in hydraulic clamping claws. Grab John was launched in the spring of 1980 with great success as a pole-planting bucket. In the same year, John’s son Åke became the new CEO of the company, a position that he still holds. Grab John quickly became an international product. During the late 80s, around 45% of production was being exported to more than ten countries in Western Europe. More than a hundred buckets were manufactured under licence in Japan. Today thousand of Grab John buckets have been sold and delivered to satisfied customers all over the world. As early as 1989 Soneruds recognized the need for a total quick coupler solution for excavators and wheeled loaders that would allow operators to automatically connect hydraulic tools directly from the cab. But the market was not yet quite mature enough for this. John Sonerud died in 1994, but his successful innovations, his smart solutions and his spirit live on in the company. The company now has a complete range of patented OilQuick quick coupler systems for excavators, loaders and forklift trucks. During 2001, a boom-mounted quick coupler was developed for material handling machines. OEM agreements were negotiated with a number of leading machine manufacturers. Almost five thousand OilQuick systems have so far been supplied to customers in the Nordic countries, the rest of Western Europe and the US. In conjunction with its 50th anniversary, the company changed its name from Soneruds Maskin AB to OilQuick AB.

ADEL providing European quality on the Russian scale Nearly three years have flashed by since the last time we met Zelenograd-based Adel in July of 2007. Over this period, the Russian manufacturer of premium-class diamond tools has consolidated its leading position in the domestic market and started making inroads in Europe. PDi’s Andrei Bushmarin reports. Adel is a company group that incorporates a number of diversified business units. This enables the group to monitor the entire life cycle of its products, from manufacturing to distribution to re-tipping.

18 years and getting better Adel’s production capacities include Delta, the group’s flagship plant that manufactures diamond segments, and contains a host of assembling lines for tools and re-tipping facilities. An in-house R&D centre helps Adel always stay a few steps ahead of the pack. The group distributes its products via a nationwide network of selling outlets. Being in the business for more than 18 years now, the Russian company has long learned to make every conceivable type of diamond tool for construction and stone applications. Adel’s catalogue features a wide range of diamond blades for wall and flat sawing, drill bits, tile sawing blades, polishing pads and cups, and grinding tools. The manufacturer also offers a wide variety of massproduced tools, and also develops and supplies custom-made products for special jobs. Every such specification is designed to be consistent with specific requirements of a job or a Adel uses Dr. Fritsch machines to manufacture diamond segments.

Quality of every item is meticulously checked at every stage of the production process. Prior to going into serial production, a new tool is extensively tested for its performance first in the laboratory, then in the field. This approach ensures consistently high quality and reliability of any Adel product.

Adel’s strongest suit However good Adel’s ready-made tools are, it is diamond segments that has really made the company’s name. The company has incorporated the global experience into its own production to come out with a product that is equally competitive in both the Russian and international markets. For its segments, Adel only uses the best raw materials from the world-known suppliers Element Six, Diamond Innovations, Eurotungstene, Dr. Fritsch and BASF. Having started out with making segments for drill bits, Adel soon mastered the production of segments for floor and wall blades. Manufacturing of high-quality segments for the stone industry was the next item on Adel’s agenda, and the company was quick to add it to its capabilities. Today, Adel is far ahead of its competitors in Russia by as the country’s biggest producer of diamond segments. Europe, too, is getting taste of the manufacturer’s expertise through its two fully-fledged subsidiaries that actively promote the Adel brand in Bulgaria and Turkey.

concrete and stone grinding are both competitive and costeffective. The GB00 and GB0 ranges, designed for rough grinding jobs, are the most in-demand makes. Both specifications demonstrate a win-win combination of high-speed operation and extended service time. Metal-bond segment for fine processing of concrete and stone is another reliable, high-quality offering from the Russian manufacturer. Having already won over most of the Russian clientele with an unbeatable price-quality ratio, Adel is now nipping at the heels of the industry’s majors. Once a humble beginner, the Russian Adel has now grown into a serious contender and a force to be reckoned with.

Of the drill segment range, which accounts for the largest share of Adel’s output, the most popular series are BF500 and MIX. The BF500 is a premium-class segment for a broad spectrum of drilling applications, equally efficient on concretes with differing aggregate and degree of reinforcement. The MIX is a versatile segment of economy that gives virtually an unlimited number of drilling options when mixed with segments of other types. New wall sawing The new standard solution from Cedima for electric hand sawing in concrete Making rectangular openings in brick or reinforced concrete walls is a task which sawing and drilling contractors face almost on a daily basis. Such openings are usually made with wall saws. Due to the geometry of diamond blade, overcuts can occur in the opening’s corners that have to be patched up after the cutting. It may pose a real problem, if overcutting is off-limits due to structural integrity or esthetical requirements. So far, a common solution has been to drill holes in the corners of the opening and chisel the remaining material out. To eliminate this timeconsuming and cumbersome operation, CEDIMA Diamantwerkzeug- und Maschinenbauges GmbH has developed a cutting technique which involves a combination of high-frequency electric chain saw and wall saw. This technique enables making clean cuts that require no further finishing. Once the opening is marked out, cuts are made in four corners with CKE-943 F4 chain saw. The new high-frequency electric chain saw has a cutting depth of 430 mm and is driven by a high-performance 9 kW motor. The saw’s bar and chain are made of the new components of ICS’s serial “Force 4”. With a weight of only 12.5 kg, it demonstrates an unprecedented weight/ productivity ratio for this category of machines. This operator-friendly chain saw is designed for smooth and comfortable cutting. The water-cooled HF

electric motor runs virtually without any vibration. Another advantage of the new CEDIMA machine is the complete absence of the noise and smell which fuel chain saws are notorious for. After the 90° cuts have been made in the corners of the opening, its sides are sawed with wall saw WS-290. The CKE-943 F4 and the WS-290 are both equipped with a high-frequency electric drive. Despite its small size, the wall saw is very powerful: driven by a 11 kW motor, it is designed to cut construction materials up to 430 mm deep with up to 1,000 mm blades. Given this, a 800 mm saw blade can be used without a precut. Both machines are operated with universal high-frequency control HF-16. The control automatically identifies type of the machine to provide optimal operating parameters. The wall saw is operated with a remote control set. The wall-sawing done, the concrete block is then removed leaving an opening whose clean edges need no patching-up or finishing. The combination of the CKE-943 F4 and the WS-290 allows for high daily output at a low level of tool consumption. With no cost involved for a second control, CEDIMA’s new wall sawing solution is also attractive from the investment point of view.

Since December 2008, Adamas has experienced the effects of the construction industry’s global downturn. But instead of sitting back and hoping for the best, Adamas has used the current situation as an opportunity for its R&D engineers to come up with something special to generate sales in these difficult times.

But first, some history is order The head office of Adamas is located in The Netherlands where electric hand sawing has been extremely popular since the early 1980s. Electric wood saws are usually adapted for wet cutting in concrete with Ø300 or Ø350mm diamond saw blades, and used for small alterations and renovation jobs. As machines became more powerful in the last 10 years, contractors modified them to cut with Ø500mm saw blades up to a depth of 20cm in concrete and brickwork. This situation was regarded as unsafe and therefore forbidden by health & safety organisations. Contractors using these machines were heavily fined. Recent years have seen increasing demand for handheld electric saws for cutting jobs up to 20cm, but no supplier had the right product. Although electric wall saws are capable of cutting up to 20 cm deep, they are regarded as too big and heavy for these small jobs. Adamas sales representatives in the Netherlands and Belgium recognized this lingering market demand and used it to launch the R&D project. Nine months of thinking, drawing and fine tuning led to an innovated prototype named the “Eazy Saw.”

Easy sawing The Eazy Saw consists of a 2200 Watt, 230 V electric drive motor protected against overload by a thermal relay and a slip glue. The aluminium gear case is integrated in the saw arm, which connects to a carriage with a patented hinge construction. This hinge is the unique part of the Eazy Saw. It is robust and rigid, and guides the saw blade perfectly straight with minimum friction between wall and saw blade centre. That allows the relatively small motor to power concrete cuts of up to 21 cm in deep. The hinge also safeguards the operator when the sawblade become jammed. The carriage guides the Eazy Saw over an aluminium track, which is bolted to the wall. Tracks are available in lengths of 1,3 and 2,3 meters, and have integrated double spirit

levels and rubber bumpers. Spacer plates are available for uneven walls. The cutting process always starts with a Ø350mm saw blade, after wich a Ø450mm or Ø540mm saw blade could be mounted. Along with minimizing the physical load on the operator, the hinge permits plunge cuts in steps of up to 5 cm. Cooling water for the saw blade runs through the gear case, and is efficiently distributed via the saw shaft to minimize consumption. An ergonomic rubber grip and a spray control cover on the blade guard prevent excessive sprays of water onto the wall, floor and operator, greatly reducing cleaning time. Adamas officially introduced the Eazy Saw in early November at an exhibition for focussed diamond drilling and cutting contractors in The Netherlands. The response was very positive. The contractors claimed that the Eazy Saw fills the gap between hand held saws and mini wall saws. Practice tests show that the Eazy Saw can appled for a large variety of specific cutting jobs in concrete and brick work. The Eazy Saw will make its international debut at BAUMA 2010 in Hall A1-144.

Dutch Gen Founded in 1979, Diacom BV is a small Dutch family business that develops and manufactures a large range of diamond tools, segments and machines for professional drilling and cutting firms in the concrete and asphalt industries. PDi’s Mikael Karlsson reports.

Based in Hoofddorp, just outside Amsterdam, the company has around 25 employees that develop and produce a set of both standard tools and machines, for example drills, saws, grinders, drilling stands and sawing machines. However, the company’s speciality is the development and manufacture of very special tools, rigs and machines for mainly customers in the Benelux countries.

Tailor-made systems increasing Diacom’s technical manager, Eric Conijn, explains: “Especially during a crisis period like now, when volumes of most standard products have fallen sharply, our development and production of tailor-made concrete cutting and sawing machines, tools and segments is our strong business, especially for our domestic clients. “For example, we have quite recently developed and built a drill lorry on rail for the public transport company in Amsterdam - ‘Gemeentelijk Vervoerbedrijf ’ (GVB) - to renovate the Amsterdam rail network.” GVB’s staff maintains, repairs and replaces the rail tracks themselves. The unique thing is that they do it when the trams still roll on the tracks. In peak hours, the trams ride every three minutes in some locations. When GVB replaces the worn out tracks they take away 100 meters of track in one go, even when the trams still drive over it. They need to drill many Ø25 mm holes to place the new anchors. Therefore, GVB needed drilling machines that can both work very fast and be removed from the track very often, as trams frequently need to pass through. So Diacom designed the drill lorry, which holds two ordinary Weka DK18 drill motors and weighs just 40 kg.

Tools for each situation

The family company also develops and produces a set of standard tools and machines.

The company is also a specialist in developing standard and special drilling stands.

Diacom has developed and manufactured another tailormade machine for the Dutch demolition company Vogelzang BV. At the construction site of a new large power plant in Eemshaven, in the northern part of the Netherlands, some 9000 concrete poles have so far been thrust into the soft ground to provide a good strong base for construction . The general contractor for the new power plant wanted these poles to be cut to the exact same level, but needed the rebar intact. “And we manufactured a machine, which cuts the poles (with a surface of 45x45 cm) 4 cm deep so the rebar is not cut,” Rob explains. “After this is done, the pole is easily crushed off from its cut and with the rebar intact. This machine has 4x Ø230 blades which saw at the same time and can cut the pole in only 45 seconds.” Rob explains further that, “The only trouble we had was that some of the poles were not square, but round-shaped. These round poles need to be cut off completely. So we developed a second

machine, which was based on a wire saw.” Another special machine had to be developed when the European Union was participating in a global investigation about the pollution of corals in the coral reefs. “They way they wanted to measure the pollution, they had into look into the coral in the sea all over the world,” Rob says. Diacom designed tools for this particular job. Because coral is very delicate, the cores needed to be intact. These were drilled out and brought to the surface for investigation. “We can actually respond to any customers needs very fast,” Rob says. “For example, we normally develop and build tailor-made machines like these in three to four weeks. When it comes to special request of tools and segments, customers here in the Netherlands often come to us in the afternoon and have the tools delivered early the next morning.” Last but certainly not least, there is one more Diacom specialty that is worth mentioning. “We can actually perform maintenance and repair any

CSDA launches company certification, the first of its kind in the industry The Concrete Sawing & Drilling Association (CSDA) has announced the launch of the CSDA Certification Programme for sawing and drilling contractors. The 3-tier audit program has been developed by the CSDA Certification Committee to provide owners, architects, engineers, general contractors and government officials with a valuable prequalification tool, improve the knowledge and skills of cutting contractors and enhance their public image. The first of its kind in the industry, the program aims to educate the marketplace that hiring a certified company will eliminate risks associated with hiring a sawing and drilling contractor who may otherwise be seen as another unknown subcontractor. CSDA is the only association representing the interests of cutting contractors. CSDA has been a leader in the development of safety and training programs since 1993. Since that year, more that 2,000 employees have graduated from the hands-on and online training programs that have been established, while safety materials such as the CSDA Safety Manual, Safety Handbook, Toolbox Safety Tips and a series of safety DVDs have been produced to help maintain safe working environments. Sawing and drilling contractors can attain one, two or all three levels of certification. Level 1 has been devised to evaluate if a company meets

the basic safety and financial requirements of the industry. To attain Level 2, a company must show it is undertaking sound operational and financial best practices in addition to the criteria set out for the first level, while providing evidence that the company has took part in basic training or certification programs to better its employees and the company as a whole. Level 3 will provide potential clients with proof that a company has a total quality management system in place, and that the contractor is committed to a high standard of safety and sound business practices. The program is an industry-specific quality audit that mirrors the standards set by accreditations such as ISO9000. In fact, by attaining Level 3 of the CSDA Company Certification Program, a company will automatically be ISO9000 compliant. Dianne Cutter, president of PQS, Inc. and a consultant who has been hired to assist in the development of this program, describes the reasons behind the launch of the program. “This part of the construction and renovation industry is very much a niche market, with no accreditations or certifications specifically customized for concrete cutting contractors. By implementing this program, a company can present a seal of approval from an industryrecognized organization to prospective customers that will differentiate them from the rest,” she said. “This will also provide the customer with confidence that the company is financially and operationally stable, and meets a standard of excellence in its specific discipline,” Cutter added.

Criteria for the programme have been prepared by CSDA contractor members who want to advance the level of professionalism of the industry in response to a growing call from general contractors and governmental officials to produce verification of a company’s skills and professional qualifications. To maintain a competitive edge in today’s marketplace, contractors must be able to provide formal standardized certification to show they maintain high levels of safety, skill and professionalism. CSDA Certification Committee Chair Kellie Vazquez of Holes Incorporated, Houston, Texas, has spearheaded the creation of the program. “The importance of having a program in place to recognize a contractor’s achievements, and for that contractor to be able to present these achievements to a potential client, may prove to be invaluable when competing for jobs,” she said. The CSDA Certification Program is available to all CSDA contractor members. It doesn’t matter if the company is small or large; whether it runs three trucks or 10. Company-wide certification addresses the proficiency of owners, operators and managers at running a company. Companywide certification looks at the management of operations, finances, human resources, equipment maintenance, scheduling, management, training and development. Certification of a given level is awarded depending on how well the company fares.
