Hydraulic Jaws HC Series The HC primary hydraulic jaws was created for the most delicate and precise demolitions, permits the operator to move with agility in the destruction of reinforced cement structures and in the removal of materials even of a considerable height; at the same time, the profile of the claws, piloted by a double cylinder and equipped with shears for cutting iron and a reinforced concrete rod inside the framework, allows for operating without any problems, even when the structures in are strongly hard. Just three key words to define the major strong points of the HC Series: powerful, because it is equipped with cylinders that guarantee exceptional gripping power in a short time; compact, because it was designed for delicate demolitions characterized by very tight moving spaces, where it is fundamental to guarantee an optimal visibility for the operator, and therefore absolute safety; fast, because it is equipped with continuous hydraulic rotation that greatly reduces the necessity for maneuvers, and therefore reduces the time needed to move the machine.

demolition with one machine, thanks to its unique characteristics. The continuous hydraulic rotation allows for perfect jaws functioning, thanks to the possibility of reducing movements to a minimum, and therefore working with a high level of precision; the ample configuration of the jaws used on this model, typical of standard demolition model, and the presence of two inter-changeable and reversible blades for iron cutting in the framework, permit the FR Series to operate as a crusher with the same efficiency.

In order to help cutting the material at the top, the shape of the interchangeable tip blade has been amended, the dimensions of the guide blade have been increased, the cylinder has been installed in a backward position so as to provide total protection for the shaft and protection has been created for the blade screw holes so as to prevent wear. The design of the mouth and the positioning of the blades make it possible to obtain linear, clean cuts in the scrap metal, meaning that loading operations can be simplified and thus reducing handling and transport costs.

Komatsu expands undercarriage factory Komatsu has opened a new extension to its dedicated undercarriage manufacturing facility Komatsu Undercarriage Indonesia, which produces undercarriage components for Komatsu OEM and, increasingly, for the after-sales market. The expansion significantly increases its capacity, doubling factory space to 9600 m2 and increasing the workforce by over 25%.

KUI was originally established in November 2000. It began producing link assemblies in April 2001 and has consistently expanded capacity and range of component types manufactured. Its current range includes track link assemblies, rollers, idlers and sprockets with an annual capacity of 12,000 link assemblies and over 160,000 rollers. In February 2006, KUI produced its 20,000th link assembly.

RUSSIA’S MOSCOW INTERNATIONAL Business Centre is currently one of the largest investment and construction project in Europe, with a current value of $12 billion. The project, known as the Moscow Manhattan, is being built on a 60hectare site at Krasnopresnenskaya embankment and encompasses 15 high-rise towers housing office, trading and hotel premises, with a total area of 2.5Mm2. Perhaps the most striking tower is the one known as Federation with a height of 354m, and 448 m with the steeple. Once operational, Federation will be the tallest building in Europe.

The updated design, with a higher number of floors, called for substantial reinforcement of the foundations, requiring diamond sawing which was the only viable option. The General Contractor ENKA based in Turkey chose diamond sawing contractor ZAO Olvex based in St. Petersburg and specializing in solving complex demolition tasks.

Phase I: Wire sawing of the building’s heavily reinforced walls The job started in spring 2006 and involved three phases.

The first phase involved wire sawing of the building’s new and heavily reinforced walls. Olvex had to demolish building’s walls by cutting them off at the bottom of the aqua park’s pool. The major challenge was that the walls, some up to 5 m thick and 7 m high, contained a high percentage of mesh fabric, with wire diameter 32-36 mm and pitch 100 mm, which occasionally reached a level of 12 % of cut surface.

The walls were wire sawed from the foundation slab and side walls and further cut into 6-8 m3 blocks weighing up to 20 t. Given an extreme lack of working space, operators had to run Cedima wire saws CSA-1001 with a wire storage capacity of up to 21 m. A ramp was built to haul the cut blocks from the pool and a 300 t crane was used to lift out the blocks for transport off site. There were 196 blocks with a total weight of 2,700 t.

Phase II: Making openings in the pool’s bottom The second phase required the making of openings in the pool’s bottom. At this stage, 280 openings measuring 1.4 m by1.4 m were cut to a depth of 1.5 m, along with a few complex-shaped holes, in the 97 m by 50 m and 1.8 m deep in the pool bottom foundation slab. The job could only be performed using plunge wire sawing, which prevented weakening of the foundation slab.

ground drilling-out and installing 1.2 m diameter reinforced concrete piles into the holes to a depth of 30 m. The situation was further exacerbated by the need to pump water out of the 250 mm holes housing columns for wire sawing and in these conditions it took a lot of time to start up the wire sawing systems. To meet the programme, operators had to run up to 10 sets of wire saws, with a volume of the wire sawing totalling to 2,700 m3.

Olvex cut through three sides of the opening with wire saws, with the fourth being stitch-drilled with 130 mm diameter, 1.5 m deep holes. On completion concrete breakers where used to push the block horizontally. Also 250 mm holes for plunge columns were cored with a set of 50, 100, 150 and 200 cm long drill bits to a depth of 1.8 m. For this job operators used Cedima and Hilti hydraulic and electric drilling systems. This method enabled operators to tear a 1.5 m high block out of a 300mm waterproof substrate for the subsequent loading and disposal operation.

The third phase involved the demolition of a 30 m high, 6 m wide and 89 m long part of the building adjacent to the pool with a foundation. The building’s slabs and walls were 200 mm to 600 mm thick, with columns measuring 500 mm by 800 mm in cross section. A total volume of the foundation beneath this part of the building was 1,300 m3; with its thickness about 2.5 m. Plunge columns 3 m long were made to allow the wire sawing of a substantial part of the foundation.

Operators had to remove this part of the foundation without damaging the remainder, which was strengthened by cutting a 800mm wide, 100m long trench into the concrete to allow 300 mm diameter steel piles spaced every 100 mm to 200 mm and driven to a depth of 16 m. The total amount of concrete wire sawed during this phase was about 2,300 m2.

Total Numbers and Figures The operation was performed round-the-clock with over 150 operators working on a rotational basis. Olvex, using its own operatives and equipment sawed 6,500 m2 and cored over 6,000 linear metres of holes of various diameters within four months. A total of 1000 concrete blocks, which were hauled away weighing 10,000 t. This was a diamond sawing record on one site for Olvex. The company has applied for this achievement to be registered in the Guinness Book of Records “as the largest wire sawing job ever done in Russia by one company, on one site”.

Demolition of Moscow’s World Trade Centre During 2005/6, ZAO Olvex used diamond wire sawing during the demolition of a partially built nine-storey building in Moscow. The building was in the second part of the City’s World Trade Centre complex and involved the construction of a high-rise building, which would house hotel and office facilities. Construction started in 1992, but building work was suspended in 1998, leaving the nine-floor building unfinished. In 2004 a decision was taken to demolish it.

The city’s ongoing renovation has entailed its demolition, to be replaced with an ultra-modern 20 storey 4 star hotel and 30 storey business centre. The project is

valued to some US$100 million, thus making it one of the most significant and ambitious construction programmes in the Russian capital. General contractor of the project was OAO Usadba-Center.

The demolition project was carried out in two steps with the first phase above ground. In the autumn of 2005, ZAO Olvex demolished some 55,000 m3 out of 100,000 m3 building volume using diamond cutting technologies. The volume of reinforced concrete blocks, which were removed by the general contractor, was some 26,500 t or approximately 10,500 m3. Out of this volume, ZAO Olvex accounted for about14,500 t or 5,800 m3. It took 60 operators two months to complete the job using 20 wall saws. Slabs were just 250

and the complete removal of the 2 m thick foundation was not possible. As the lateral sides of the slab were totally inaccessible, operators had to cut the slab horizontally and vertically using plunge wire saws while advancing from its centre to the periphery. Horizontal cuts were made along the full length of the slab to a depth of 1.8 m, 200 mm above the underside. This operation left a 200 mm thick reinforced concrete slab, with a total area of 820 m2, which the general contractor demolished with hydraulic breakers.

The ground beneath the adjacent Mezhdunarodnaya hotel had to be stabilised from moving during the demolition process. This was done by the general contractor installing a few hundred 300 mm diameter piles to a depth of 10 m.

mm thick, with thickness of columns varying from 400 mm to 500 mm. The major issue on this job was that the WTC building had been built next to an existing structure with its outer wall just 50 mm away from the adjacent buildings.

The second phase required the demolition of the building’s underground structures. The general contractor required the cutting out of a 2 m thick, 1,640 m3 cast-insitu reinforced concrete foundation slab into 20 t blocks.

The slab was supported on concrete diaphragm walls to a depth of 16 m. The exact location of the walls was unknown

On this site Olvex set a record for horizontal wire sawing by cutting some 820 m2 of reinforced concrete. Horizontal sawing is a tricky operation, especially if there is no access to lateral sides of a concrete block and when tackling this Olvex had to use a new method. The company worked with Cedima engineers to develop a set-up for horizontal wire sawing consisting of two plunge columns and two sets of pulleys made with a CAZ-3200circular saw. When placed into 300 mm diameter holes next to plunge columns, the pulleys allowed diamond wire to be pulled horizontally to make cuts at any pre-determined depth.

The diamond sawing done by ZAO Olvex on the two Moscow projects was the only Russian entry for the “Diamond Award” nomination established by the International Association of Concrete Drillers and Sawers. The award ceremony will be held at Bauma in April.

The largest trade fair in the world will be even larger in 2007! That means excellent prospects for the world’s number one exhibition for the construction and mining industries.

Bauma will also set some new records in 2007. There will be more exhibitors and innovations, it will be more international and there will be more synergy. It seems to be

Bauma 2007 will be bigger than ever.

More than 3000 exhibitors have reservations for space (Bauma 2004: 2801 exhibitors) occupying an area of some 540 000 m2 indoors and outside. This is an increase of 40,000 m2 compared to 2004.

At the last Bauma attendance was 416,000 with about 29% from countries other then Germany. Attendance this time is expected to further increase.

Strong Asian representation Many European countries are booming and even Germany has shown some upturn. This can affect Bauma in both ways. Either contractors have too much to do so a visit to Bauma is hard to squeeze in or we will see a strong increase in visitors, not only from Germany that were in the bottom of their recession in 2004, but also from countries all over the world.

There is a large increase of Asian exhibitors at this year’s Bauma. Chinese and Japanese exhibitors have increased their presence five fold India has quadrupled and Austria, Luxemburg, Turkey, Korea and Greece have doubled.

Companies from Bulgaria and Singapore are exhibiting for the first time. There is

the perfect place to gather information about all of the industry’s latest developments.

Tons of news In January Bauma organiser Messe München, held a Pre-Bauma Press Conference for journalists from all over the world. About 220 manufacturers met with journalists, including PDi Magazine.

The majority of the larger companies attended the event, but representation was rather weak from the sector covered by PDi. For example concrete sawing and drilling manufacturers were only represented by Tyrolit.

The press event provided an indication of what to expect at the show in April. For demolition, concrete sawing and drilling, floor grinding and recycling, several more new products are expected, unlike 2004 when mainly updates of existing products were presented. This year will see a lot of updates and improved products but also completely new product ideas, broader product segments and companies that will introduce completely new segments to complement their existing product ranges. Several are targeting the growing rental sector.

Remote controlled grinder from Scanmaskin Scanbolagen’s new Combiflex 700 RC for tackling large areas has a unique operating system that is radio controlled via a joystick, providing an even grinding speed. It leads to reduced cost for the abrasive segment, lower maintenance costs and a longer service life for the machine.

Radio control makes it possible for the operator to empty the dust collector and handle cables whilst the machine is in operation. The drive system has been designed to avoid damage from vibrations and overloading. The Scan Combiflex 700 RC is

battery powered and can be easily moved when transporting, loading and unloading.

Scan Combiflex 700 RC has a grinding width of 700 mm. Scan Combiflex is a stable machine with most parts in aluminium, which makes it durable in tough conditions. It has several ergonomically designed features, which makes the handling of the machine easier and safer for the operator. The machine was introduced at the Swedish show Byggmaskiner in March and will be displayed on the Scanmaskin stand at Bauma.

HTC Sweden will be presenting at Bauma a number of updates and new technical innovations, which the company believes will set trends in the floor polishing industry.

These will include the HTC 650 and 800 Classic machines equipped with a new hubsystem, which makes the machines more reliable. Also on display will be a new version of the HTC 420 along with two new versions of the HTC 400. A number of changes have been made including alterations to the starting motor, chassis and functional solutions including a lifting brace and new handles.

HTC will also launch the completely new grinding system HTC 1500iT, which is equipped with two grinding heads with room for 6 x 340 mm grinding discs. This machine will complement the larger HTC 2500 iX, which is the only mobile grinding system of its kind in the world and achieves a grinding width of 2.5 m. This system has been used by companies such as Lufthansa Technique at Arnstadt in Germany on a 25,000 m2 area for the Rolls Royce Aviation Division.

These additions will also be complemented

by HTC’s updated tool system and dust extraction system.

HTC Sweden will present at Bauma a new technique for colour impregnating existing concrete floors. Test samples of this new method showing the aesthetical and durable results were also on the HTC stand at the recent Byggmaskiner Exhibition. ”The result is so consistent that it will hold a lifetime and the variety of effects that can be achieved are almost endless,” says HTC Sweden AB press officer Maria Hollmann.

The colour comprises of fine, transparent colour pigments which are forced into the existing concrete or cement-based surface. There is both a water-based version as well as a solutionbased version and the colours can be mixed with each other. There is also a choice of patterned or plain finish. ”HTC works at developing ways to use concrete. This material no longer has to remain grey, it can be personalised and

the opportunities available are only limited by our own creativity,” says Maria Hollmann.

Husqvarna acquires King Concepts Husqvarna has acquired the Australian company King Concepts, which manufactures and sells equipment and consumables for the floor preparation and concrete polishing market.

Husqvarna is a world leader in diamond tools and cutting equipment for the construction and stone industries. The Group is also the world’s largest producer of lawn mowers, chainsaws and portable petrol-powered garden equipment, such as trimmers and blowers. Net sales in 2006 were SEK 29,4 billion and the average number of employees was 11,400.

King Concepts´ product range includes polishing and grinding machines, dust collectors, and related diamond tools and consumables. Sales are mainly in USA and Australia. The company has approximately 15 employees and its manufacturing is situated in Melbourne, Australia. The operation will be included in the Group’s Construction

New-technology boost for Nimbus product range

The pioneering REVEX floor saw blade from Nimbus is one of a range of new products born out of state-of-the-art diamond tool making technology. The result of an intensive 3-month research programme by the Nimbus UK Research and Development team at Burgess Hill, the new REVEX has shown to be some 30% faster than earlier blades with no sacrifice in life.

Designed to keep labour costs down by boosting speed of cut, the REVEX has also shown a projected life, which in some cases virtually doubles that of other more conventional products. During extensive field trials across the

UK, involving a spread of materials, the new blade has demonstrated consistent performance, with a typical rate of cut of 0.15 m2/min in average reinforced flint concrete.

Another addition to the range is the latest WIREX diamond wire. In recent trials Nimbus WIREX20 yielded a life gain of more than 100% compared with two other well-known competitive products. Cutting at 1m2/hr, the Nimbus wire achieved a life of 1m2 per linear metre in heavily reinforced concrete and 1.8m2 per linear metre in mass flint concrete.

Nimbus has applied its new XS technology across the range and is introducing additional specifications for advanced products like the BRIX blade series, ULTIMAX and ULTIMA thin wall core drills, AVANTIS wall saw blades, grinding and polishing plates for floor preparation and blades for green concrete/prestressed applications. Bauma launch for HSX 350 The Dutch manufacturer of diamond drilling and cutting equipment, Core Powertools, will introduce at Bauma 2007 a new HSX-350 hand held 230V electric cutting machine.

The HSX-350 is specifically designed for the use with diamond saw blades with a maximum diameter of 350 mm. This innovative product, which has a maximum cutting depth of 140 mm, is meant for cutting jobs in reinforced concrete and brick walls.

The company says that the compact electric power tool is a perfect alternative for the petrol and hydraulic power cutters, especially for indoor use as there are no exhaust fumes.

In a 200 m2 larger booth, plus an outside demonstration area Tyrolit will show their latest wall, floor, wire and bench sawing equipment as well as new drill and grinding series.

Tyrolit will also show their new series of Tyrrex blades and a new series of floor saws for standard users. Other new products include a of improved bench saws and for the first time in Europe Tyrolit is introducing a series of grinding and milling machines for maintenance of runways and concrete roads.

High cycle WX-15 Tyrolit will also introduce the WX15 electrically operated wall saw for creating door and window openings in walls up to 420 mm thick. The WX-15 uses blades from 600 to 1,200 mm diameter driven by a high-frequency, watercooled motor that delivers 15 kW at the blade at 32 A. The drive motor and controller can be removed from the wall saw and used to drive the Tyrolit SK-B diamond wire saw, which until now has been available as an hydraulic version only. Thus wire sawing is now able to benefit from the highly controllable, soft-start capability of an electric drive.

The motor design includes an industry first

safety feature in that should the blade seize in the wall, the motor speed drops to an idle and a fully disengageable clutch prevents damage to the drive spline.

Such protection is not possible on conventional electric wall saws that use a slipping clutch.

The saw also conforms t o industry norms for r a d i o frequency interference, which is essential when working in sensitive areas, such as near hospitals, airports and telecoms installations.

New intelligent floor saws from Husqvarna Husqvarna Construction Products is launching the new Husqvarna 300, 400 and 500 series floor saws, which are simple to use, and have a patent pending anti-vibration system.

“We have listened to what users want. The machines have many innovative solutions that show what we can achieve when all development resources are collected under the Husqvarna brand,” says Husqvarna Construction Products product manager Michael Leroy. ”Above all, we have put a lot of energy into creating the best ergonomics and making the machines easier to manoeuvre and maintain than before.”

An anti-vibration system, sealed blade shaft, and a raise and lowering system assisted with gas cylinder or springs are just some of the refinements. ”The patent pending anti-vibration system provides up to 50% less handle vibrations than competing models. This is one of the absolute

lowest levels on the market and means that we can comply with the increasingly more stringent vibration regulations that are being introduced in more and more countries,” adds Michael Leroy.

The adjustable handle means that the user can select

the optimum working position. The control panel stays level regardless of how high the saw is raised, increasing the operator’s comfort. The depth indicator is easy to use and the control panel is complete with tachometer and an emergency stop switch. A gas cylinder or springs assist the raise and lowering system and make it extremely smooth to use. Diatip for retipping saw blades Diatip, the specialist manufacture of equipment for re-brazing segments onto diamond tools, will introduce a range of machines for the retipping or manufacturing of saw blades, designed for the low-budget workshop.

Substantial changes in the cost of manufacturing diamond drill bits and saw blades in recent years have led to many contractors opting for on-site retipping of segments rather than sending the tools back to the manufacturer. The cost of the diamond segments previously constituted a major proportional of the total tool cost.

But now the cost of the barrels and steel centres, as well as transportation is more significant. The equipment from Diatip is useful for countries with low labour cost to make their own manufacturing of diamond bits and saw blades.

The most popular model, the CD 7-28, is used for preparing the core bits before brazing new segments. The CD 7-28 cuts off the used part of the old core bit at the same time as it cuts seats for the new segments. The CD 7-28 works without electrical power with minimal noise and no sparks or scrap. For volume retipping it can be equipped with hydraulic motor and it is also available as a fully automatic version.

New pre-cutting blade from Tyrolit Tyrolit has introduced a laser-welded diamond blade capable of a broad range of pre-cutting applications in hard and soft concrete as well as brick. Designed for use with ring saws, the 4.4 mm thick B116 blade is wider than most on the market and is suitable for most aggregates. Overall diameter is 405 mm, making the blade ideal for use with nearly all cutoff saws.

Segment height is 10 mm, rather than the usual 7 mm, extending blade lifetime even at high cutting speeds. The strong steel core stands up well to undercutting. Despite the higher than average productivity that the

blade offers, its life is said to be 25% longer than that of any competitive pre-cutting blade, giving a good performance-to-price ratio.

The new Tyrolit WX-15 high cycle wall saw Tyrolit has introduced the WX-15 electrically operated wall saw for creating door and window openings in walls up to 420 mm thick. The WX15 will be shown at Bauma and uses blades from 600 to 1,200 mm diameter driven by a highfrequency, water-cooled motor that delivers 15 kW at the blade at 32 A. The drive motor and controller can be removed from the wall saw and used to drive the Tyrolit SK-B diamond wire saw, which until now has been available in hydraulic version only. Thus wire sawing is now able to benefit from the highly controllable, soft-start capability of an electric drive. The motor design includes an industry-first safety feature in that should the blade seize in the wall, the motor speed drops to an idle and a fully disengageable clutch prevents damage to the drive spline. Such protection is not possible on conventional electric wall saws that use a slipping clutch.

The saw also conforms with industry norms

for radio frequency interference, which is essential when working in sensitive areas, such as near hospitals, airports and telecoms installations.

The roll guide rails, 360º geared swivel arm and three-piece blade guard used for Tyrolit’s hydraulic wall saws, can be transferred to the WX15, making the new unit even more cost-effective for existing customers. It is light to handle, as the saw head weighs just 29 kg, including the two feed motors, rising to 41 kg when the blade drive is attached.

All functions are operated from a remote, 400 V controller connected a hand-held box with joystick to control movement. Four push-buttons automatically select the correct blade speed according to the diameter of blade being used.

An easy-to-clean filter has been included, as well as a bypass to slow the water supply to permit dry cutting.

The blades have been developed with a totally new technology and have a so-called kite-design on the segment. ”With Astro-blades, we have taken technology one step further and developed the next generation of diamond blades. The new blades have increased life, higher cutting speeds and can be used on more materials, which reduces the number of blade variants that the user needs,” says Husqvarna Construction Products diamond tool product manager Alain Dupont. ”Reinforced concrete, asphalt, iron, natural stone and metal are

The Astro blades’ segments are designed to give a quick start through reduced surface contact between the segment and the material that is to be cut. The kite-design also gives the blade a more attractive appearance. The highest quality diamonds and an increased segment height of 125 mm give the blade a longer life,” adds Alain Dupont.

The US based Stow Construction Equipment, a supplier of concrete and masonry working equipment, dewatering pumps, diamond blades, and surface preparation products, has a new line of core drilling products for the professional contractor and DIY enthusiast to drill many materials, including concrete, brick and masonry block.

Stow’s CDM-1H hand-held core drill is designed for multiple smaller applications. It’s perfect for electrical and plumbing jobs where operators need to drill through walls and floors.

This single-speed model excels in wet drilling applications up to 75mm in diameter or it can be used with Stow’s Cobra dry drilling bits up to 125mm in diameter. The Cobra is made specifically for drilling reinforced concrete dry.

The 11A, 115V hand-held core drill operates at 0-1,800 rpm and weighs 4kg. It comes with an adjustable shoulder rest, a three-position handgrip and internal water feed. A carry case and tools are also included.

Stow’s CDM-2CSA is a compact drill rig for applications requiring accurate straight or angled holes. It can be mounted by a bolt or vacuum base and the rig’s adjustable angle column simplifies angle drilling. This dual-speed 15A unit has a 230mm capacity and with motor, the drill rig weighs 28 kg.

Two full-size drill stands are available for larger jobs where accuracy and versatility are

required, such as drilling concrete for post and flag pole installation. Stow’s CDM-3CS Straight Mast and CDM-3CSA Angle Base models have bit capacities of 250mm and with an optional spacer block of 300mm. Both can be used as bolt or vacuum base with an optional vacuum pump.

Compact wire saw from Tractive Research and development in the area of high frequency technology continues relentlessly at Tractive. The Pentruder HF-motor family now includes also 18 kW (25HP) and 27 kW (37HP) motor options.

The Pentruder 8-20HF wall saw is already a bestseller and is recognized as a really efficient workhorse. Dutch manufacturer Demarec will be exhibiting a new generation of products for the demolition and recycling sector at Bauma.

In addition to the existing range of MultiQuick Processors, Demarec will present the MQP-25. Depending on the installed type of jaw this new MQP weighs approximately 2 t, making it suitable for 18-25 t excavators.

A prototype of the T-30 jaw especially developed for cutting tanks and plate materials will also be on display, in combination with the MQP-30, which is suitable for 22-35 t. This will be complemented by the U45 jaw for universal application with the MPQ-45 on concrete with reinforcing steel.

Sandvik Mining and Construction will use Bauma as the worldwide launch pad for a new range of

Sandvik Rammer hydraulic hammers designed specifically for use with backhoe loaders. Known as the BL range, the new hammers utilise proven Sandvik Rammer technology together with a number of new innovations to make the four new hammers ideally suited to rental, trenching and other backhoe loader duties.

Based upon the proven Sandvik Rammer S 23 and S 25 hammers, the new four-model range comprises two standard and two super-silenced CITY models ready-to-mount on any backhoe loader. Equipped with compact, hard-wearing side plates, these new hammers fold away for safe, secure road transportation, allowing them to be deployed and stowed quickly to match standard backhoe loader work duties. The S 23 N BL and S 23 N BL CITY have operating weights of 268 and 322 kg respectively and are suitable for carriers in the 3 to 6.5 t operating weight class.

At Bauma on stand 711/2 in the outside area NPK will present eight new models of the GHSeries breakers. A feature of the new GH-series is the new bracket design. The breakers are more fully closed and each model ensures maximum guidance of the hammer inside the bracket to prevent disturbing vibration through the excavator’s arm and to reduce sound.

Up to the GH-6, the hammer is guided with high-strength plastic spacers. From GH-7 and up all models are equipped with cushion rubbers, absorbing the vibration and shocks of the hammer and assure comfort to the operator. The breaker itself has no metal contact with the bracket.

NPK is planning 15 models for excavators of 1.2 to 110 t.

In addition NPK will also introduce a new Sorting Grab, the SG-110. This fivefingered grab is fully hydraulic rotating and suitable for carriers of 12 - 20 t. It weighs 1150 kg and it has a jaw opening of 2.12m. The SG110 is built for heavy duty and all main parts are made of wear resistant Hardox 400 and the robust cylinder has a buffering system at the end of its stroke.

With a width of only 680 mm and its compact design, the SG-110 offers good visibility for the operator. It is ideal for demolition of wooden structures, light steel structures and sorting of scrap materials. Due to its enormous closing force of 7300 DaN and its maximum lifting capacity of 4500 kg, the SG-110 is also suitable for lifting, placing and loading rocks and large stones.

NPK will also introduce two new U-series concrete crunchers. The biggest model is the U-45R, with 360º hydraulic rotation suitable for carriers of 40 t. All models have a centre tooth at the tip and a long centre cutter.

Cat’s New H35Ds hydraulic hammer

Caterpillar is introducing the H35Ds hydraulic hammer as an extension of the line of D-series hammers and an ideal match for Caterpillar 301 machines and other makes of similar sized excavators.

The H35Ds hammer has been designed with focus on reliability and ease of serviceability. The lower bushing, upper bushing and thrust ring have all been incorporated in a 3 in 1 service part, which allows easy access and visibility of the entire tool guidance system for quick inspection in the field. Sandvik improves RAMONA, a system to help minimize downtime Sandvik Mining and Construction will use Bauma to unveil the latest developments in its field-proven Sandvik Rammer Monitoring Analyzer remote monitoring system for its hydraulic hammers. The RAMONA system is designed to help minimise unscheduled downtime, prolong hammer life and maximise hammer productivity.

The Sandvik Rammer Monitoring Analyzer utilises advanced electronics contained within the hammer hydraulic system to deliver up-to-the-minute condition and performance data to the operator. By identifying abnormalities in operating conditions, RAMONA allows the operator to pre-empt potential catastrophic failures before they occur.

The unit draws electronic data from a series of sensors located in the hammer hydraulics, and delivers it to the operator’s cab via an easy-to-read display. This display allows the operator to compare actual performance with pre-programmed performance data based on known hammer performance in any given application or environment. The RAMONA system also offers the benefit of true remote monitoring, allowing data from these sensors to be delivered to a remote location using mobile telephone technology. Wide body for wide crushing The Italian attachment manufacturer Mantovanibenne will use Bauma to show two new series of attachments. First out is the mega crusher MS130 with an extra wide jaw of 2500 mm and a jaw depth of nearly 1000 mm. It is developed for carriers between 70 to 140 t and weighs about 13 t and has a crushing force of 395 t. Secondly a new series of sorting grapples will be released. The GR series, as it is called, contains 10 models in weight from 320 to 2400 kg.

6 new breakers from Tabe

Before the end of 2006 TABE started marketing four new hammers. These were the AGB10, AGB 95, AGB 15 and AGB 575. From the light weight range, the new 100 kg AGB-95 model is recommended for carrier machines of between 1.5 and 3.5 t and is able to produce between 1,000 and 1,4000 strikes per minute. It has the traditional pure hydraulic technology with diaphragm accumulator and without tie bolts that characterise this type of TABE hammer.

In the medium weight range, TABE has two models, the AGB-10, which weighs 921 kg, including bracket and is recommended for

machines of between 10 and 16 t. This is the first model from the new GP family, which incorporates new hydraulic technology based on pure gas and allows for an impact energy that is 20% greater than with current technology. TABE is also launching the new AGB-575, which weighs 600 kg, has the new pure hydraulic technology and is aimed at excavators of between 8 and 15 t.

In the heavy weight range for carrier machines of between 21 and 28 t is the new AGB-15, which weighs 1,470 kg, uses hydraulic and gas technology and improves the hammer’s impact energy by reaching between

The SB 52 breaker In addition to Atlas Copco’s recently launched new generation of SB breakers, the company has now added smallest breaker in the range, the SB 52, which replaces the SB 50. It has an exceptional power-to-weight ratio compared with its predecessor and fits a far greater range of carriers.

The SB 52 features a completely new design and is much stronger and more powerful, and is suitable for use with all micro carriers from 0.7 to 1.2 t. ”The benefits we are most proud of are the very compact design and the unique powerto-weight ratio of the SB 52 breaker,” says Atlas Copco light hydraulic breaker chief designer Jan Erenius.

With technically advanced percussion mechanisms and a long piston stroke, the

performance and breaking power of SB breakers are among the highest in the market. The length of the bushing gives maximum tool guidance, reducing wear and increasing the service life. The new SB breakers have fewer parts than the previous generation, giving the advantages of a reduced maintenance requirement and easier servicing.

Atlas Copco introduces new solid body breaker SB 552 The range of Atlas Copco solid body breakers has been extended to include the SB 552 model for excavators up to 15 t. Atlas Copco’s solid body breakers are internationally recognized for their superior durability and reliability. They are used for road work, trenching, general demolition, plus primar y and secondary rock breaking. Many customers appreciate the benefits of the SB breakers and have asked for a bigger model. ”Until recently, our solid body breakers were limited to sizes up to 450 kg. But with this new design we can now offer a range up to 550 kg,” says light hydraulic

breaker product line manager Jerome Uliana. ”We are confident that the new SB 552 breaker will meet our c u s t o m e r s ’ expectations, offering the same benefits as the other SB breakers: high hitting power, all-round robustness, and unique design.”

The new SB 552 is as tough and reliable as the other hammers in the SB range. ”A solid body breaker is machined from a single block of metal. This method brings many advantages, such as no side or head bolts and a unique resistance to bending forces and operator abuse. Another advantage is fewer parts and less maintenance,” adds Uliana.

The slim design of the SB 552 makes positioning easy. The new design has also led to lower vibration levels and less noise. The SB 552 offers the highest perfor-mance and breaking power in its class. A new hydraulic system gives higher efficiency and benefits energy recovery. ”In producing this breaker, we were able to develop the solid body concept into an even bigger breaker and make this unique design available to a wider range of customers. We were able to achieve this thanks to improved production methods,” says chief designer Anders Lundgren.

Stanley LaBounty recently introduced an automated, blade lubrication system, which field testing proved to significantly reduce maintenance and enhance shearing performance. This new line of shears called the MSD Saber-Lube Series was presented at the National Demolition Association show in Nashville, USA in March and at the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) show in Las Vegas, USA early April.

New chisel line In October 2006, a new fully automated chisel hardening line started operation in the Essen plant.

Working tools with diameters from 105 to 240 mm can be hardened. Measuring around 30 m long, the gas-heated, fully automated line comprises a high-temperature furnace, three lowtemperature furnaces, 14 magazine compartments and a batch charger.

“Charging horizontally allows us to produce both faster and in larger batches,” says head of the chisel hardening shop Norbert Bergmann. ”In the past, working tools for heavy-duty breakers had to be hardened individually. The new line produces five working tools in one batch. With tools for medium-duty breakers it is now possible to harden ten at once instead of the previous six.

The new hardening line delivers consistent quality, significantly higher capacity and high levels of safety.”

The new GSB and RSB screening buckets offer different approaches to sort a wide range of materials. The grills in the GSB screening bucket are suited to reclamation work on stony ground, whilst the RSB rotary screening bucket is ideal for cleaning sand and screening river borne material.

The new CRB crusher bucket is ideal for crushing debris in demolition rubble, stone and stored waste. There are two models available for carriers from 18 to 40 t. The jaw opening can be adjusted from 20 to 130 mm.

The HSS hydraulic steel shears are designed to cut entire iron/steel structures in both aerial and on the ground applications. They can be fitted to any type of excavator from 9 to 110 t and there are nine models available from 1.6 to 9 t.

Breaker developments Ingersoll Rand continues to

develop the Montabert hydraulic breaker range, including two new additions to the Silver Clip range, the SC-6 and the SC-50 models. The SC-6 weighs 65 kg, but is less than 1 m long and easy to handle. The SC-6 can be adapted to all carriers from 0.7 to 1.2 t and takes flows varying from 12 to 23 l/min. The maximum frequency is 1450 strokes/min. In addition, the SC6 accepts very high backpressure, up to a maximum of 30 bar. With a diameter of 37 mm, the chisel and pyramidal point tools for the SC-6 offer exceptional long life performance. The SC-6 is available as standard as a soundproof version.

The SC-50 completes the upper part of the Silver Clip range. With a weight of 500 kg, it can be mounted on carriers from 7 to 14 t providing hydraulic oil flows from 75 to 125 l/min. It is soundproofed as standard and features protection against idle running and a pressure regulator. Unlike the other Silver Clip models, the SC-50 retains the tool with two strong retaining pins and it can be greased automatically with the Easylub option.

JCB is launching at Bauma a new series of JS Auto tracked and wheeled excavators, the most powerful and efficient machines the company has offered. The eleven new tracked and four new wheeled models, featuring Tier III compliant engines, range from 14-26 t and are more

Spanish site dumper manufacturer AUSA has introduced its new 9t capacity articulated chassis D 900AP dumper, the biggest in the company’s range, which starts at 0.85t. ”The new D 900AP completes the widest range of dumpers, from the most basic loads to the highest, with simple traction or 4x4, self-loading or not. We’ve achieved a milestone in our company’s history with the best technical and operational solutions on the market,” says AUSA sales director José Ramón Gómez.

A team of British engineers collaborated in the design of the dumper. ”The choice of this team of experts responds to the history behind dumpers in the United Kingdom,” says Gómez.

There are a number of dumper manufacturers in Great Britain, which accounts for about 60% of the world dumper market, and it is one of the countries with the longest history of dumper use. AUSA believes that with the addition of the D 900AP, its market share in Great Britain will be at least 25%.

Bauma will be the global launch of JCB’s new range of Robot skid steer and compact tracked loaders offering greater performance, operator control, comfort and enhanced operation.

Building on JCB’s unique single arm Robot design, the new models feature redesigned cab access and are available with a range of 34 attachments. The Robots are targeted at a range of industries, including local authorities, plant and tool hire, demolition, waste, construction, landscaping and agriculture. The new range consists of five wheeled skid steers with rated capacities from 600 - 1100kg, including JCB’s first ever 800kg capacity model, and three new compact tracked loader variants, with capacities from 820 - 1020kg.

With its unique single-arm design, the JCB Robot remains the only skid steer on the market to offer a side entry door. This improves safety by eradicating the need to climb over attachments to gain access, and significantly enhances visibility as there is no left-hand arm to obscure the operator’s view. Access to the cab is even easier on the models as the door hinges are now positioned to the right of the aperture rather than the left.

The larger Robot 190, 1110, 190T and 1110T models are now powered by the JCB Dieselmax engines. They deliver 83hp (63kW) in the 190 II tracked and wheeled models, while the larger capacity 1110 Robots feature a turbocharged 91hp (68kW) version. In addition, all Robot 190, 1110, 190T, and1110T high flow (HF) models benefit from greater hydraulic output, with pressures rising from 185bar to 225 bar and flow increasing from 120 litres/min to 130 litres/min. The result in significantly improved performance for all high flow attachments such as cold planers and trenchers.

At the front end of the machine JCB has altered the quick hitch attachment system, replacing the twin lever design for a single lever. Operated from the cab entry side of the machine, this lever is mounted to the left hand side of the quick hitch and allows for faster and more efficient changing of attachments.

New sideshift backhoes for Bobcat loaders The new R30S and R35S sideshift backhoe attachments from Bobcat can be mounted on all the company’s skid-steers, compact tracked loaders and all-wheel steer loaders from the S130 model and up. The new R30S and R35S backhoes offer more features than the previous 730SH and 835SH models they replace. As well as maximum digging depths of 2990 and 3510 mm, respectively, the R30S and R35S backhoes have easy-to-use joystick controls for precise, smooth movements and reduced operator fatigue.

The joystick controls are mounted directly on the valve bank, eliminating all mechanical linkages. The valve bank features a new section

with manual depressurisation of the auxiliary hydraulic lines, which removes pressure in both lines to allow connection and disconnection of hydraulic breakers and other attachments. The new backhoes have electrically activated auxiliary hydraulics.

As part of standard safety features, the backhoes are equipped with a safety shut-off valve that locks out all hydraulic functions when the control valve is in the raised position. In addition a mechanical system locks the valve assembly in the raised position and must be manually released to lower the control centre into the working position.

Bobcat has launched two new zero tail swing mini-excavators, the 425 ZTS and 428ZTS, with operating weights between 2 t and 3 t.

The Bobcat 425 ZTS, equipped with cab, has an operating weight of 2650 kg. The excavator combines a maximum digging depth of 2541 mm with breakout forces of 2250 daN and 1460 daN over the bucket cylinder and dipper stick cylinder respectively.

The similar Bobcat 428 ZTS has a maximum digging depth of 2844 mm and, equipped with cab, an operating weight of 2933 kg. The 428 has a breakout force over the bucket cylinder of 2460 daN and over the dipper stick cylinder of 1220 daN. Powered by the Kubota V1505-IDI-NA diesel engine giving 20.6 kW of output power, both the 425 and 428 have load-sensing hydraulics. This means that even when working at lower engine rpm, the hydraulics ensure fine control of machine functions allowing all operations to be carried out simultaneously.

The new S100 skid-steer loader from Bobcat is a compact machine that can work in tight spaces and is easy to transport. The S100 loader offers the power and performance expected of a bigger machine, combined with the durability of a strong frame design, increased operator comfort and easy serviceability thanks to a transverse-mounted 25 kW Kubota 4-cylinder 1505 Tier IIIA-compliant diesel engine.

With an operating weight with bucket of just 1800 kg, the S100 offers a rated operating capacity of 453 kg and a tipping load of 907 kg. High engine power and hydraulic flow provide for extra fast cycle times and provide power for operating over 30 different attachments.

The design of the new machines is consistent with the M325D MH and incorporates all the proven D-series features. In addition a number of new developments contribute to increased productivity, reliability, versatility and operator comfort.

M318D MH and M322D MH offer improved productivity through increased lifting capacities, higher power, Smart Boom™ function, new blade and an all-new in-cab drop time adjuster. Both machines are compliant with all current European Union sound and emission regulations, and are suitable for multiple applications including scrap yards, mill yard and transfer stations.

For the most demanding lifting requirements, a new heavy lift function is available as standard.

the S100, such as the optional Power BobTach system, which helps to speed up the process for changing attachments. Also available is a bucket positioning valve, which helps to ensure that the bucket and contents stay level.

The large swing open tailgate and transverse-mounted engine provides convenient one side servicing. Hydraulic and hydrostatic components under the operator cab can be accessed quickly by removing two nuts at the front of the cab and tilting it back.

As in all Bobcat skid-steer loaders, the S100 offers the well-known advantages of the unique ’bow-tie’ drive chain design, using prestressed, heavy-duty drive chains in two short continuous loops on each side of the loader.

No periodic adjustments are needed. The axle bearings are self-lubricated and never need additional greasing and the hub design also offers total seal protection.

The novelty will act as an information centre for rock excavation process optimization. It gathers comprehensive information on drilling process and related matters. Bauma launch for new Conjet Robot 364 The leading Swedish hydrodemolition equipment manufacturer Conjet AB will use Bauma 2007 for the world launch of the latest model in its well renowned 360 range the Conjet Robot 364 MPA. The Conjet Robot 364 MPA, on display in Hall A1 stand A1:215, can remove concrete from numerous surfaces, including above and underneath the robot with a minimal set up time.

Due to its rigid designed and improved multipurpose arm, which reaches up to 6m above the robot and 5m to the side, the new Robot 364 MPA can operate with a reaction force up to 2000N, which is equivalent to the force of a water jet generated by a 550kW (700 HP) high-pressure water pump.

The new features on the Robot 364 MPA include hydraulically height adjustable steering wheels that add an additional degree of freedom for positioning the feedbeam with its integral jetting lance and individually hydraulically extendable drive wheels to optimize robot stability. In addition the design of the new multipurpose arm offer higher accuracy in positioning and holding the feedbeam.

The closed loop control system features the latest state of the art PLC (micro computer) and a new control box controlling the hydrodemolition process. There are nine pre-loaded programs for the most common hydrodemolition tasks and in addition the operators can store up to eleven programs with their own set up parameters. Two level cut and accelerated lance turning are other features included in the system.

For safety reasons, when the robot is supplied with high-pressure water from a Conjet Powerpack the robot and powerpack control systems are normally integrated. This enables the powerpack to speed up when the robot is switched into automatic mode and returns to idle when it is stopped. Should the emergency stop be activated on either the robot or the powerpack both systems shut down immediately.

The Robot 364 is electrically powered so that it can be operated in tunnels and parking garages without producing any exhaust gases that are hazardous for the operators.

Guidetti shows latest development at Bauma Italian manufacturer Guidetti will launch their new compact recycler Ceaser 3 at Bauma. According to Guidetti it combines compact size, high production, high versatility and high mobility. Ceasar 3 has the length 5.5m with conveyor closed and 8.5m with conveyor opened. The width is 2.2m and height 2.5m. The inlet opening measures 530x400 mm and the machine has a crushing capacity of 80m3/h. The total weight is 0.8 t.

This will be the motto for Rockster Recycler at Bauma 2007. The Austrian machine manufacturer will present his latest product: the Rockster screen box RS83, as well as the worldwide unique Duplex System.

Screening at one stroke: the Rockster screen box RS83 Rockster has amplified its product line of mobile compact crushers with the new screen box RS83. This circular motion vibrating screen with a weight of only 1,9 tons is the perfect option for the track-mounted impact crusher R900 and can be assembled directly on the main discharge conveyor of the machine. For activating the screen box, no separate drive system is requested. The RS83 is driven by the additional hydraulic unit of the R900.

Robust design, smart solutions Just like all Rockster crushers also the RS83 boasts a very robust and stable design.

Furthermore the Rockster team managed to introduce innovative technologies, to absorb the vibrations of the box and protect the main conveyor of the crusher from any impacts.

3800/2007 Medium and heavy duty breakers Atlas Copco Construction Tools is now ranked the world’s biggest manufacturer of hydraulic breakers and silent demolition tools offering an extensive product line. A result of both organic growth and the acquisition of the German company Krupp in 2002.

PDi’s Mikael Karlsson visited the Atlas Copco plant in Essen some weeks ago to find out more about them.

In Essen Atlas Copco develop and produce medium and heavy series breakers, and a wide range of silent demolition tools for a variety of demolition and recycling applications.

These include combi cutters, demolition and bulk pulverisers, multi grapples and scrap cutters. ”We have some 380 employees here in Essen for product development and manufacturing. And for some time now the plant is working 4 shifts at full capacity to satisfy the need of both breakers and silent demolition tools on the market,” says marketing communication manager Anja Kaulbach.

Major investments for expansion Further to this, a huge investment plan of some EUR 18 million is under way for expansion and modernization of the plant, which means that new manufacturing machines are introduced almost every week and assembly is

being changed and optimized at present.

PDi visited Essen just before Bauma 2007, and along with the normal work the company is also preparing to launch several new products for the show in Munich this year.

Several new products The new DP 2800 Demolition Pulverizer introduced last December replaced the DP 2500. This is a new type of pulverizer, which can be universally used for both primary and secondary demolition. It has a wide, straight jaw and rotation gear that makes it very versatile in different applications.

The slewing gear on the DP 2800 allows it to be positioned quickly and accurately, which saves time. Time is also a factor when it comes to servicing. The teeth and wear plates can be replaced on

site and the blades can be easily and quickly turned around, giving maximum utilization of wear parts.

With the new CC 2500 Atlas Copco is completing the machine operated range of Combi Cutters. The CC 2500 has a service weight of 2580 kg and can be attached to carriers weighing 22 to 35 t. The most important innovation of this generation of hydraulic combi cutter attachments is that the jaws are supported on a central main stud. Enhanced safety and stability, shorter opening and closing cycles as well as faster replacement of jaws are the chief advantages from which users profit.

“In addition more new products for demolition and other applications will be launched at Bauma. We are currently compiling some 13 news releases for this occasion,” says Anja Kaulbach.

“A lot more to come” “Atlas Copco now has a lot in the pipeline product-wise,” adds silent demolition tools product line manager Matthias Holtgrewe. “What we have seen in the past years and even months, is that the market for these tools has grown more than other segments, even stronger than breakers since silent demolition is going to replace traditional demolition more and more.”

Sales of hydraulic breakers are also booming. “Last year we produced around 3,000 medium and heavy weight breakers, and this year we plan to produce some 3,800 breakers,” says medium and heavy breaker product line manager Torsten Treger.

Atlas Copco introduced the first hydraulic breaker in the early 1960s. And the former Krupp introduced the world’s first machine operated hydraulic breaker, the HM 400, at the Hanover Trade Fair in 1967.

With the joined companies today, the small breakers are manufactured in Sweden and the medium and larger models in Germany. Most models feature the well-known Krupp percussion technology and AutoControl system, DustProtector II, ContiLube II and VibroSilenced system.

“And we can easily today offer our products anywhere in the world with the benefit of being part of Atlas Copco’s sales, service and support organization worldwide, which opens up new opportunities for sales in markets outside Europe and North America where we are already strong,” adds Torsten Treger.

The diamond tools manufacturer Samedia, based in Les Herbiers, France, is launching completely new diamond cutting blades called SHOXX to cut very hard reinforced concrete, granite and construction materials.

New patent The new X20 SHOXX blades, with a diameter of 230, 300 and 350 mm, incorporate a completely new and patented manufacturing technology, where they use high quality bonds developed in the automotive industry and are much more resistant.

With the new method and materials, Samedia has managed to give the new blades the highest segment height on the market today of 20 mm. The segments are conical, which reduces the space between them reducing vibrations during cutting.

Titanium coated diamond grains The new blades have a steel core with a thickness of 2 to 2.2 mm and the diamond grains are coated with titanium, which increases diamond retention by 25%. ”It has taken us six years to develop this new manufacturing method and the SHOXX blade to get the very best results for the end users,” says, SHOXX product development manager Uwe Neidhardt.

“X20 fastest tool on the market” Samedia promises that X20 SHOXX blades are the fastest tools on the market and cut hard materials twice as fast as standard blades. At a special product demonstration in the French city of Le Mans earlier this year, hundreds of invited guests could witness and test this for real. The company also says that with quality and hardness tested to a much higher level than required by EN 13236 standards, the new blades have a lifetime that is twice as long as other top quality blades.

More the 45 years in business Samedia started in 1961 and produces a wide range of quality products for cutting, drilling or grinding in stone, construction or refractory materials. Over the years, the company was the first manufacturer to propose top range blades with 9, 12 and 15mm and now 20 mm segment heights on the market. The factory is located in Denzlingen, Germany, and for many years specializes in laser welded diamond tools with a capacity to produce some 2 million diamond cutting blades per year. All products are distributed from the factory directly to distributors around Europe. The main markets are France, Spain, Italy, Belgium and Germany.

New Atlas Copco multi grapples helps clean up after storm The hurricane Kyrill has caused damage running into millions in the woods of the Sauerland district. Blocked roads and woods around Kirchhundem are being cleared with saws and a new MG 1800 because the timber has to be processed it deteriorates.

Recently the contractor Behle from Kirchhundem purchased a new grapple. The operator Josef Schmidt is satisfied with the performance. ”With the high-speed rotation unit of the MG 1800 we can really clear up this place. The grapple safely chucks the trunks and holds them in any desired position. The speed with which the trunks are clasped is also very important. The material is not jerked off because the trunks are grasped too briskly and we are not losing time because the jaw is not closing fast enough.”

Schmidt and his Volvo EC 210 transport the trunks to a storage area where they are sorted and stored until they are retrieved by the sawmills. ”I can handle five to six trunks with the grapple, that is a weight of 3t to 4t per charge,” adds Schmidt. ”And this is absolutely necessary if you want to get control of the huge amount of trees blown over by the storm and get them out of the woods in time.”

Atlas Copco’s MultiGrapples includes six models designed for being attached to carriers with a service weight ranging from 5 to 50 t.

A standard hydraulic 360˚ rotation unit allows the grapple to be quickly and accurately positioned. Hydraulic cylinders and components are protected against damage. The blades can be reversed and replaced with ease to guarantee a high MultiGrapple availability. The grapples have elongated slots to prevent branches from getting stuck.

Diamond tools from Korea Seoul based Korean manufacturer of diamond tools Fine Tech Corporation is now increasing their marketing presence. Fine Tech was founded in 1990 as a manufacturer of industrial diamonds and diamond tools for sawing, drilling, grinding, milling and polishing in concrete, stone, asphalt and other construction materials.

The company employ 20 persons and around 90 per cent of the production is exported to markets abroad like Europe, USA and Australia to name the strongest.

The product line The product assortment consist of several different types of diamond tools: The Cup wheels, named Swirly and Turbo Cups, for FTC pads. angle grinders in dimensions between 100 to 180 mm. Dallas Contracting Co., Inc., is a nationwide contractor specializing in demolition, concrete recycling and remediation

projects. The turnkey operation offers a comprehensive suite of services to its customers, including, demolition, on-site concrete aggregate crushing and recycling, environmental remediation, rigging, brownfield redevelopment, surplus and used equipment sales, equipment removals and salvage and scrap metal recycling.

Dallas Contracting was hired by a leading manufacturer of cement and chemical admixtures to demolish a large portion of their old cement production plant in West Virginia to make room for a large plant expansion. The task involved demolishing 14 silos and several other miscellaneous buildings and structures. All structures had significant dust accumulation on the outside and many of the silos were half to three-quarters full of cement powder.

With the amount of dust and cement powder, demolition of these structures posed a significant dust control issue for Dallas Contracting, jobsite employees and neighbouring bystanders. The conventional method of controlling dust in the past has been a labourer holding a hose or a hose mounted to a fixed anchor mechanism. Fire hoses create large water droplets, 300 - 3,000 microns in size, which cannot cover a sufficient area to control the minute particles of dust emissions typical of a demolition project. In addition, dust suppression with fire hoses is an inefficient use of labour and natural resources. A better method would be needed to achieve proper dust suppression at this large, long-term demolition project.

An effective solution Dallas Contracting selected the patented DustBoss® dust suppression system for its dust control needs. The DustBoss is a fully automatic oscillating ducted fan incorporating a highpressure water misting system that creates a Virtual Dust Barrier.

This system can connect to a normal garden hose and eliminates manual labour and high water volumes typical of a manned fire hose dust suppression method. In addition, DustBoss units blanket between 510-1950 m2 with a fine mist of 50-75 micronsized dust-attracting water particles, the optimal size for agglomeration of dust particles coating the dust and driving it to the ground.

At this project, two DustBoss units with portable generators were used and were setup to create a dust barrier between the area to be demolished and the active plant.

“We were very pleased with the effectiveness of the DustBoss units on this demolition project,” said Dallas Contracting Co., Inc President John Sisto. “The demolition of the silos was a potential dust pollution and health nightmare and these units effectively resolved this issue for us. In addition we were very pleased that we received no dust complaints due to the effective dust suppression achieved with the DustBoss units. We would use these units again on a project of this nature.”

Resource Recovery Technologies:

How to transfer trash Resource Recovery Technologies in the US is a transfer station that daily processes up to 450 t of yard waste and demolition debris 250 days a year. Until recently RRT used the conventional method of spraying a fire hose to control dust. Despite the hosing of the debris, a huge dust cloud still remained. Workers were unhappy and complained as the danger of slipping was greatly increased. The constant spraying also resulted in the material becoming over saturated causing the material to be much heavier and with the added weight were basically paying to haul water to the landfill.

As this method did not effectively control the dust, the air

filters on the heavy machinery used at the site had to be frequently replaced. RRT tried the DustBoss, a fully automatic, oscillating ducted fan with a high pressure misting system. After using the DustBoss for a few days there was a dramatic improvement in the air quality. The workers could see from one end of the building to the other which was impossible with the old system.

The improved air quality also resulted in longer air filter life on the heavy machinery within the facility.

“We are no longer wasting 4 to 6 man hours per day, 250 days per year to keep the dust down,” says site supervisor Ken Tritz. Also, we do not need to change the air filters on our wheel loader and other heavy equipment as often.”

The reuse of the land would be key to the economic growth of the City of Midvale. The close proximity to residential areas meant special care was needed to control demolition dust at the site.

At the Midvale Slag Superfund Site, the DustBoss was able to solve dust problems that several fire hoses could not.

The DustBoss creates a mist of 50 - 200-micron sized droplets that are able to blanket and control dust particles in the air.

The system also uses less water over the same area as a fire hose would, conserving water and preventing over saturation of the demolition debris to be hauled away. In addition, because less water was used with the DustBoss, the amount of contaminated water that would have to be treated was reduced and resulted in savings on the cleanup project.

The perimeter of the site and personal monitors had zero hits throughout the duration of the 18-month long project.

Entact management was amazed by the results. ”Our overall impression of the DustBoss is excellent,” says Kirk Gates, of Entact. “We will be using the DustBoss on another site similar to this one.”

ENTACT Environmental Services:

Demolition & Environmental concerns?

The US based environmental remediation company ENTACT Environmental Services has used Dust Control Technology’s DustBoss on a recent contract. The company was retained as the supervising contractor during the cleanup of the Midvale Slag Superfund site, a 446-acre abandoned lead smeltering site.

The Midvale Slag Superfund Site, along with another adjacent Superfund Site, made up almost 20% of the City of Midvale and the majority of available vacant land in the city.

Darda concrete crusher and Brokk robot succeed together Brokk robots and concrete crushers from Darda are good fit. Since last year the German manufacturer Darda is owned by Brokk AB.

Partial deconstruction work is frequently quite challenging because parts of the building fabric need to remain undamaged.

In Schiltach in the Black Forest region of Germany the building contractor BTS GmbH has mastered this challenge using a Brokk 180 demolition robot, equipped with a Darda CC 420 concrete crusher. Sanitary products manufacturer Hansgrohe, transformed a production hall from the 1960s into a representation building with new exhibition and seminar rooms, an audimax cinema and a museum.

For this project, two three-storey staircases had to be cored, The Darda concrete crusher CC420 breaks concrete of up to 400mm and cuts steel reinforcement with a maximum diameter of 28 mm.

No problem with insufficient floor capacity as the Brokk 180 has a low bearing pressure.

and mainly in the front upper floors and reinforced concrete columns and binding beams had to be removed. The skeleton construction out of reinforced concrete stood wall to wall between two other buildings where normal activity had to go on undisturbed. For the partial deconstruction this meant as little noise, dust and vibration as possible plus a high safety standard with regard to the remaining buildings.

The Darda CC 420 concrete crusher mounted to a Brokk 180 proved to be the ideal demolition tool. According to BTS GmbH the major advantage of the CC 420 was its opening width of 420 mm in relation to its low weight of just 240 kg. It can crack concrete with a thickness of up to 400 mm with a breaking force of up to 374 kN. The CC 420 is suitable for carriers in the 2.5 t to 3 t class and is an ideal match with the BROKK 180. Due to its low weight and compact size the Brokk demolition robot could be used in every corner of the building. Because these machines are remotely controlled the operator was able to stand at a safe distance from falling debris.

The electro-hydraulic drive is extremely silent and does not produce any emissions. The Brokk 180 mini-excavator weighing 1.9 t is a lot more powerful than mini-excavators of comparable classes, the company claims. Working together the two machines broke 125 m3 of brickwork and 180 m3 of concrete with a large amount of reinforcement as well as steel with a diameter of up to 28 mm. Here the compact CC 420 showed its strength with a cutting force of up to 1240 kN. The complete deconstruction work was finished after 40 working days and significantly shorter than the programme.

By using the CC 420 with the Brokk 180 demolition robot 50% fewer diamond saw cuts were necessary. The separated parts were first secured and then broken up with the concrete crusher.

EDA annual conference in Bilbao, Spain The European Demolition Association will hold its 2007 conference in Bilbao, Spain on 7 – 10 of June. Place is Gran Hotel Domine Bilbao.

It will, as usual, be a packked programme including board meeting and EDA general meeting. Further special speeched will be held

by Pilar de la Cruz on the subject Controlled demolition with explosives of chimneys. Mr Takala of the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work will talk about safety aspects at demolition sites.

The conference will also include several group and general discussions on subject like high reach demolition and EU lobby issues. On Saturday the 9th of June a gala dinner will be held and earlier the same day the group of participants will visit worksites in the city of San Sebastian.

Special programme will also be arranged for those who will bring their wifes to the event and several general activities are also included in teh agenda. Among other the particpants will be able to meet the Presedent of the Chocolate Association in Bilbao.

Particpant will also have the opportunity to enjoy samples of chocolate from several countries of the world like Venezuela, Trinindad, Ivory Coast,etc.
