“The scoop of the year” WHEN
YOU RECEIVE
this issue of PDi, year 2006 will have passed and a new year
started. I hope you all had a nice Christmas and a good start to the New Year. As always the combined December/January issue of PDi provides flash backs of the previous year’s events and are included in our Concrete Cutting Survey. With help from the umbrella association The International Association of Concrete Drillers and Sawers, we are providing some statistics relating to the size of the international concrete sawing and drilling industry. From previous issues of PDi, CSDA’s magazine Concrete Openings, other association magazines and completely new material, we are publishing several reports on new products and other events that occurred in the concrete cutting industry during 2006. As this issue is largely dedicated to the concrete cutting industry we are including an article about the US diamond chain saw manufacturer ICS Blount. PDi Editor North America Jim Parsons recently met with ICS marketing manager Joe Taccogna. In addition we include our Italian Supplement presenting the Italian demolition, recycling and concrete sawing and drilling industries. The supplement is included as an extra magazine in the centre of the issue. In October the European Demolition Association held their autumn session in Stockholm. Several interesting subjects were discussed of great importance for the future development of the European demolition industry. PDi’s specialist on demolition and recycling, Heikki Harri, reports on page 40 to 42. Also included in this issue are details of several new products to be launched at the two important trade shows this year, World of Concrete 2007 in Las Vegas and Bauma 2007 in Munich. On page 50 there is a list of exhibitors at World of Concrete related to our industries. In addition Furukawa Rock Drills in Europe has taken the delivery of one of the biggest hydraulic breakers in Sweden, the F100 weighing over 7 t. The Swedish demolition contractor Lodab bought the breaker and reports that it has exceeded expectations. In this issue we also have a scoop relating to remotely controlled demolition equipment. As the first magazine in the world we are publishing on pages 52 - 53 an article about a completely new brand of demolition robot, the Finmac F16. The Swedish manufacturer Brokk AB dominates this market, particularly in Europe and USA. Finmac is up against a tough competitor, but the company is convinced that there is a market for one more brand. The Finmac robot will be introduced at Bauma in April. And last I would like to thank all our contributors and advertisers for 2006 and I wish you all the best in the New Year.

Words from O’Brien
Is training becoming accepted way of life? Can it be that the sawing and drilling community is maturing to the point that training of operators, management and sales people is becoming an accepted way of life? Some countries where the government mandates training for sawing and drilling operators have well established programs. However, those countries where training is not required, naturally, have less participation. It has always been much easier to put off training when facing obstacles to keep a business alive. When I first became involved with CSDA in the 1980’s, the association had no formal training programmes and the group was reluctant to develop training programs. Those operators who had been in the business many years were the experts and, therefore, there was no need for formal training programmes. But gradually over the years, CSDA began to establish training programmes and many of those experts realized that they might not know all there was to know. The introduction of the 101 courses by CSDA in the past few years has lead to a strong interest by owners to send operators to these courses, which are meant for new employees so that they can learn the right way from the beginning. Many companies realize the benefits of properly-trained employees - reduce time lost on the job due to accidents and increased productivity to the smarter worker. The CSDA Insurance Programme has opened many eyes since it collects data that dramatically shows where accidents occur and how frequently. Better training of employees is often the best option to reduce future risk and improve the general profitability of the business.
In some industries where safety and training are ingrained, training as a part of risk management is mandated for anyone who comes to work on a job site. The chemical industry is one of the leaders in this area and it is virtually impossible for any sawing and drilling operator to come on a job site unless they have successfully completed all the required safety training programs and are certified to be on the job. Even sales people are required to complete training programs or they are not permitted on the job site. Sales people are increasingly required to be certified in order to be on certain job sites. In the U.S., some states are requiring sales people are to complete the 10-Hour OSHA Construction Safety course or they are not allowed on the job. A recent highway death of a sales person has also lead to a manufacturer requiring that all their sales persons be OSHA certified. It is a shame that an unfortunate death was required to change the mentality, but soon a similar type of certification or training will be required on more and more job sites. The sawing and drilling industry that began 60 some years ago has indeed matured as the industry has expanded many times over. With more visibility comes more scrutiny and formal training programmes will help educate employees so that the industry can continue to grow and thrive. Training is the key and associations will fill a critical need in developing training programmes for future generations of employees. Best regards Patrick O’Brien President IACDS

Daiichi Cutter promotes new President One of the world’s biggest concrete sawing and drilling contractors Daiichi Cutter has changed management members recently. The two founders Yoshio Nagano and Takashi Watanabe retired last September and Shunichi Hirose has become the new president. The President Shunichi Hirose was born in 1952 and brought up in Hokkaido, the northern part of Japan. After serving in the Air Force, he majored in chemistry at the Kitami Institute of Technology. Soon after graduating from the college, he started working for Daiichi-Cutter in 1977. Since then, he has experienced managerial positions at several branch offices, appointed as a director in 1993 and become a president in September 2006. The two founders, Yoshio Nagano, and Takashi Watanabe had retired in September, due to the company’s regulation which stipulates director’s retirement age at 65. The new president and any other five directors, have no family relationships with the founders, since the company’s regulation prohibits director’s children from entering the company.

Growing Eastern market for Hydro-Tec The German company Hydro-Tec, offering a variety of first class equipment for concrete cutting an light demolition tasks, has been very active in East Europe this year. The focus on the eastern block of Europe is a strategic step for Hydro-Tec and this year they have attended shows in Moscow, Bukarest, Budapest and lately also Zagreb in Croatia, all with very good results. Hydro-Tec reports that the autumn fair in Zagreb was stamped of many interested customers from the Croatian construction and concrete sawing and drilling industry. Special interest counted the core drilling systems with high frequency core drill motors. In the larger cities as well as Zagreb and the vacations strongholds Split, Zadar and Rijeka, many new buildings in module method of building emerge. Gaps for installation directions of the guilds for heating and sanitary first retroactively are brought in. The specialty public showed a great interest for in particular the core drilling equipment from Hydro-Tec. Several hand held drill motors in the achievement class until 2.0 kW for the use in that dry and wet drilling were sold directly in the stand. Hydro-Tec offered hand held core drills for concrete, brick and masonry up to 70 mm, as well as core drills for dry drilling in concrete, brick stone, masonry and Schamotte up to 200 mm.
The Indian demolition and concrete cutting firm Trinity Stewards PVT, we reported on in PDi issue 2-06, has provided an update. After the first story we published Trinity contacted Tyrolit as they were interested in purchasing a new wire sawing system in order to take on a large concrete bridge demolition. “Now we are a proud owner of a new Tyrolit Hydrostress wire sawing system”, says Mr Sritharan, founder and owner of Trinity Stewards. The structure was a precast prestressed M40 grade concrete. During the preparation of it the structure got damaged and had to be disposed. “Using the Tyrolit Hydrostress wire saw system we saw the structure into several small pieces. The performance of the hydraulic wire saw was excellent. It was simply marvelous to see the wire saw slicing through the heavy reinforced concrete like a heated knife into butter. Further I would like to say that we were able to buy this machine because of PDI magazine. Now my company’s capacity and confidence has enhanced ten fold,” ends a happy Sritharan.
PDi concrete cutting survey 2006 Another year has ended for the world’s concrete cutting industry. Even though several of the world’s markets have been experiencing an upturn in terms of concrete sawing and
The International Association of Concrete Drillers and Sawers has, as usual, provided the latest worldwide market figures. However, due to several member countries not providing figures for this year it is hard to give a complete picture. The total number of concrete sawing and drilling contractors has even declined from 10,868 contractors at the end of 2004 to 10,780 at the end of 2005. But only Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom and USA have provided figures for 2005. Australia, Austria, Canada, China, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Italy, Japan, Korea, Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Portugal, Russia and Spain have not updated their figures. It is not clear if there are any changes in these markets.
Slight market increases The German association has reported a slight increase of 10 members between 2004 and 2005, while the total German market shows a decrease of 100 concrete cutting companies from 1300 to 1200. The average annual revenue has also decreased from US$ 400,000 to US$350,000 bringing the total

German concrete cutting market to a value of US$420,000,000 from US$520,000,000 in 2004. This rather drastic change is surprising, as the German construction industry has shown a slight upturn over the last two years. Also Switzerland’s latest figures are showing a decrease. The number of member companies stays the same but the total number of sawing and drilling contractors has gone down from 320 to 300 and the average annual revenue has dropped from US$ 450,000 to US$435,000 as well as the total market value for Switzerland now lies at US$130,500,000. The United Kingdom is unchanged for 2005 with 83 members in the association, and an estimated 250 contractors with average annual revenue of US$600,000 and a total market value of US$150,000,000. The two member associations in IACDS showing increased figures for 2005 are Sweden and USA. The Swedish association reports an increase of 5 members from 97 to 102. The total number of concrete sawing and drilling contractors stands at 475. With unchanged annual average revenue of US$500,000 the total market value stays on US$
235,500,000. There is also a similar small increase in the USA. The total number of members in the association has risen from 326 to 333. The increase of 7 members does not affect the total estimated number of 2,300 contractors as well as the average revenue of US$ 2,100,000. The total US market value is US$4,830,000,000. The world market value in terms of concrete sawing and drilling for 2005 is US$9,898,100,000, compared with US$9,972,800,000 in 2004. But with incomplete statistics the true picture is not clear.
West holds positions while east is increasing However, the figures do indicate that the western markets held their positions. 2006 has also showed a strong increase on many European markets in terms of construction and although there are no figures for 2006 estimates suggest a slight increase for the year. PDi estimates that the markets of Eastern Europe have been doing well and showing steady growth. Russia reports some 200 companies working with concrete sawing and drilling today. About 20 of these are professional concrete sawing and drilling contractors with an estimated turn over between Euro 150,000 to 500,000. Action has been taken to set up a Russian concrete sawing and drilling association and discussions in this direction were held last summer in Moscow. Other eastern European markets, like Hungary, Bulgaria and Romania are also showing clear signs towards a more conformed concrete cutting industry. The annual market survey from IACDS has, for many years, listed 21 countries reporting concrete sawing and drilling activities. We would like to see more on that list as concrete cutting methods are used in many other markets. In 2006 we reported from India where professional concrete sawing and drilling techniques have been taking a stronger foothold. There is also similar activity in Brazil, Argentina and Chile. In markets where concrete sawing and drilling is in its infancy, but where an association does not yet exist, it is often the manufacturers of concrete sawing and drilling equipment that hold the market together. The manufacturers also play an important role in bringing contractors together, allowing them to exchange experiences. The Russian market is a good example of this where suppliers like Hilti, Husqvarna Construction Products, Tyrolit and several others regularly organise client meetings throughout the country.

most report a good market climate for the past two years. Several have increased production with most coming from demand from new markets, such as Poland, Czech Republic and Hungary, while others, like Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Bulgaria and Romania are still developing. Most of the international manufacturers of concrete sawing and drilling equipment are European based, although they operate on a multi national basis. European diamond tool manufacturers have lost a great deal to Chinese and Korean manufacturers but not yet on the equipment front. What is remarkable is that the USA still is very weak in the international concrete sawing and drilling equipment business. But the US domestic market is so strong the US manufacturers have generally shown little interest in promoting their products abroad. There is one exception. ICS Blount is a true international player with a strong foothold in Europe. The situation with demolition equipment is different and the majority of the US brands are exported worldwide. During the last two years several European manufacturers have been successful selling their equipment in the US. This is quite an achievement, as the US market has been considered closed and hard to break in to for non-US manufacturers. From a method point of view concrete sawing and drilling has been carried out in different ways in Europe and USA. The Americans tend to be more into heavy-duty equipment in size, weight and power, while the Europeans prefer light and compact equipment. The two continent’s concrete cutter industries have been moving towards each other. Europe’s concrete cutting equipment manufacturers have adapted and developed the high frequency techniques that originally came from the US. Several European manufacturers are selling their products in the US and to some extent large equipment has been replaced by lighter and compact powerful systems. Besides the major manufacturers like, Husqvarna Construction Products, Tyrolit and Hilti, that have strengthened their positions in the US, companies such as Tractive, with the Pentruder system, EDT eurodima and HTC have become common brands in the US market. The US market has always been and is more tempting then ever for overseas manufacturers. The US concrete cutting industry is now worth more then US$5,000,000,000, which is about 2.5 times more then the value of the European concrete sawing and drilling industry. Cont. page 16
US manufacturer ICS Blount in Portland introduced their first complete diamond chain concrete cutting saws in 1994. In just 12 years the brand has become well known among professional concrete cutters around the world. PDi’s JIm Parsons reports. Text: Jim Parsons Photo: ICS Blount
YOU CAN’T WALK THOUGH THE PORTLAND, Ore., headquarters of ICS Blount, Inc., without passing a model of the company’s first diamond chain concrete cutting saw. As the forerunner of the flagship 853Pro series of hydraulic cutters, the tool is a fitting reminder of the convergence of influences and ideas that made ICS’s patented diamondsegmented chain technology possible.
Roots in the timber industry Appropriately for a company based in the U.S. Pacific Northwest, ICS has roots in the timber industry. An entrepreneurial employee of Oregon Cutting Systems (OCS), the wood saw manufacturing division of parent company Blount, Inc., discovered that the precision grinding qualities of diamond chains made them ideal for construction and demolition applications. “At that point, ICS manufactured only guide bars and diamond chains for other companies,” explains Marketing Manager Joe Taccogna. “As the opportunity to focus on the construction market became clear, ICS began to develop a complete diamond chain concrete cutting saw, which we introduced in early 1994.”
“5 percent of the world’s market” Just over a decade later, ICS has captured 5 percent of the world’s hand-held saw and diamond tool markets with a total of six gas-powered and hydraulic models of cutting saws, as well as eight types of chains in lengths from 9 to
24 in. that are engineered for different materials and user preferences. ICS also manufactures hydraulic power packs, slurry vacuum systems, and other specialty accessories. In addition, the company has established a solid international presence, with 40 % of its sales outside the U.S. While most customer support is handled from the Portland headquarters, the company is augmenting its existing sales and distribution operations in Nivelles, Belgium, with representatives in Germany and the U.K.
Straight from the source ICS’s success is not due solely to an innovative means to do concrete cutting and demolition work. “We felt that the best way to learn about this business was to focus on and work with the people who did the most of it,” says Taccogna, pointing to ICS’s active involvement in the Concrete Sawing and Drilling Association as an example. “Our managers have served as CSDA leaders and training course instructors, and in other professional development roles.” One of the most important lessons gleaned from this industry immersion is that no two cutting contractors are
12
PDi • 5 - DEC. 2006 - JAN. 2007
alike, and that the mantra of ”faster, better, cheaper” is a moving target that requires constant product innovation and improvement. “Concrete cutting is a relatively small, specialized industry, so contractors are almost always busy,” says Taccogna says. “Our strength is that we offer a labour and time saving tool, but there has to be more to it than that. Contractors are looking to us to enhance capabilities such as flush cutting, which allows them to use a saw closer to a wall, making square openings in deep wall panels for ductwork and utilities without the need for overcuts; and portability so that they can work virtually anywhere.” Similarly, industry-wide cost pressures require contractors to closely monitor the return on their investment in tools and equipment. “If someone is going to pay a certain amount for your product,” says Taccogna. “You had better make sure it lives up to their expectations.” That’s one reason why ICS has tailored its product line not only by speed and job type, but also by expected use. The gas-powered 6.5-hp 633GC and its somewhat slimmer cousin, the 5.7-hp 613GC, are designed for contractors who have a wide range of cutting needs on a weekly to monthly basis. For the rigors of everyday use, ICS’s hydraulic 853Pro series provides ruggedness without compromising flexibility. The 853Pro-F flush-cut saw with the WallWalker® feature
allows users to easily make cuts within .087 inches of an adjoining wall. A compact model in the series, the 11hp 814Pro, provides hydraulic cutting power in a more portable package.
An affordable advantage Practical value also underscores the newest ICS product line Redzaw®, enabling the company to reach beyond the core market of professional concrete cutters. A smaller-scale version of ICS’s other lines, the gas-powered 4.2hp RZ60 cutting saw can use chain bars up to 12 in. long, while the comparable RZ60C Chop saw uses circular diamond blades up to 14 in. (356 mm) in diameter. Joe Taccogna, Marketing “It’s the same diamond chain technology as our other Manager at ICS. lines and the 60cc motor is virtually identical to the 80cc motor in the 613CG”, says Taccogna. “We’ve simply found a way to put them in a smaller, more affordable package.” Diamonds may be the source of ICS products’ unique cutting capability, but it’s the micro-sized o-rings that provide their durability. “The o-rings seal the chain joints from grit and water, helping to balance the life of the chain chassis with the life of the diamond segments,” 5 - DEC. 2006 - JAN. 2007 • PDi
13
says Taccogna. “Otherwise, you’re literally throwing away diamonds.” Taccogna is quick to add that manufacturing refinements are helping mitigate the added costs of diamond chains. Once entirely manual, the assembly process is now largely automated. “There’s still some hands-on work, but our machines can precisely spot any improperly set components,” he says.

Future features ICS Model 613GC
ICS Model 633GC
Current and prospective users of diamond chain cutting saws can count on even more product innovations thanks to ICS’s active research and development programme, which takes advantage of OCS’s nationally recognized testing lab. One initiative is focusing on an alternative material chain that can be used to cut ductile iron. Taccogna says that ICS is also committed to cultivating the cutting profession itself. “We’ve evolved our sales force to cater to the specific needs of our market, placing a big emphasis on training for heavy users,” he says. “That’s already well established in the U.S. and Belgium, and will soon be provided by our U.K. sales group as well.” “That approach is not limited to simply understanding various aspects of cutting technology,” adds Taccogna. “We support CSDA’s efforts to help operators improve their own professional abilities, such as making estimating and other management skills part of their classes. Raising the industry’s professional profile will help everyone do a better job for their customers. That’s an outcome that benefits everybody.”

“Concrete bits and pieces” On the following pages there are some flash backs of events last year. In January 2006 Tyrolit started out with a major customer event inviting hundreds of clients mostly from Europe to its head office in Schwaz, Austria. Dutch company Core Powertools with its first CX20 model launched a new brand of core drill motor in 2006. The diamond tool manufacturer Hagby Asahi was sold in spring 2006 to Sandvik AB. Hagby was originally Swedish but was bought by Japanese Asahi Group during the 1990s. With the new owner Sandvik the more then 50 year old company is restored to Swedish ownership. Another Swedish company Husqvarna Construction Products AB was formed as an independent company with their brands Dimas, Partner and Diamant Boart. Just before Christmas the company advised that the Dimas and Partner brands have been replaced with Husqvarna. Only Diamant Boart is unchanged as it has a very long history, especially in the stone industry (see page 18). During the spring of 2006 the German plumbing and
installations equipment manufacturer Rothenberger Group outside Frankfurt acquired the Austrian manufacturer eurodima. Rothenberger is a world leader in their field with more than 2,500 employees. Eurodima is now known as EDT eurodima. The acquisition was an important step for eurodima and with the financial muscle of the Rothenberger Group EDT eurodima can focus on continuous product development. EDT eurodima has launched the 18 kW high frequency wall saws SB170, also called Typhoon and also the bigger 32 kW SB320 named Tornado. Both saws have become very popular in the US market and over 30 of the SB170s are operating in the USA and sold through its distributor Sanders Saws, which is part of the Multiquip Group.
Concrete floor grinding equipment Another group of products that has strengthened its position among concrete sawing and drilling contractors, as well as light demolition and renovation contractors, is floor grinding equipment. As this method is closely related, many contractors are picking up floor grinding as an additional service. The biggest company in this field is HTC Sweden AB. With strong organic growth HTC has gone from a small local player in the beginning of the 1990s to a world leader with new production plant and development centre in Söderköping, some 150 km south of Stockholm. A new US office provides marketing, sales and service functions and assembly for the US market. HTC also has its own sales company in Germany and is using another 20 distributors in its sales work. HTC has experienced strong growth in the last three years, which made the UK investment company 3i Group plc interested in the family owned business. Since the second half of 2006 3i has bought 34% of the shares and will take an active part in the future expansion of the company. German Schwamborn, founded in 1935 by Alois Schwamborn, is selling its floor grinding products worldwide, and launched the new planetary grinder DSM 800SDOC at the beginning of 2006. The company also launched the new BEF 250scarifier. Another Swedish floor grinding equipment manufacturer Scanmaskin launched its new ScanCombiflex 500. The 500 model is a planetary machine, weighs 120 kg and has been developed for tough conditions and hard to remove coatings.
Dust extraction equipment Another type of equipment closely related to concrete cutting, light demolition, renovation and floor grinding is dust extraction and slurry collector equipment. The US manufacturer Ruwac in Holyoke, Massachusetts has launched two new models. First is the fully portable and dual motor Little Red WNS 2220 vacuum for the concrete industry. This is Ruwac’s most compact machine (see page 44). The company has also introduced the redesigned DS 2 Powerhouse Series vacuums, suited for continuous dust extraction (see page 39). Ideal for any industry dealing with fine, dry problematic materials like powder and dust, the Powerhouse Series is powerful enough to be used in central vacuum systems while remaining portable and features a redesigned, maintenance-free filtration system. Two other well-know dust extraction equipment manufacturers joined forces at the beginning of 2006. Pullman Scandinavia acquired Ermator AB and formed Pullman Ermator AB. Both companies had a strong foothold in Europe and presented a wide range of models for dust extraction and collection of wet material and slurry. There have been no new products from the new organisation during the year, but the whole range has been redesigned and improved.

Grab-n-Tote makes concrete slab removal easier Diamond Products introduce new cut off saw Diamond Products has added the SpeediCut Cut Off Saw to its product line. The deep cutting, 406mm blade capacity of the SpeediCut, is ideal for professional concrete contractors. Weighing only 10.6kg, it is a lightweight, multipurpose industrial saw that is used for smooth square cutting on a wide range of building materials. Specifications of the SpeediCut include an 81CC, 6.2 hp motor, maximum engine RPM of 9,350, maximum cutting depth of 146mm, an electronic ignition system for improved starting and an arbor size of 20mm.
GMJ Company, LLC has introduced an easier and safer method for removing concrete slabs called the new Grab-n-Tote®. The company claims the tool makes it easier for one person to safely lift and move a concrete slab weighing up to 226kg. The dolly-like tool attaches to concrete slabs 100mm to 300mm thick by 457mm to 1.22mm long using a metal claw to hook under the slab and lift it. The universal claw-grabbing action allows the operator to grasp carpeted, tiled and even rough-surfaced concrete slabs out of a trench or off a flat floor without using pry bars. The grab-n-Tote then works like a furniture dolly to easily negotiate sharp turns and confined spaces., GMJ Company founder, Gary Justice, developed the Grabn-Tote(r) for use in his concrete cutting business and has had much success with its ability to prevent sore muscles and back aches.
Husqvarna Construction Products launches new brand Husqvarna Construction Products, which is part of the recently exchange-listed Husqvarna Group, has chosen to assemble its brands under a single joint brand Husqvarna. Therefore, Dimas, Partner and Target will be phased out in the beginning of 2007. ”By focusing on a single brand, Husqvarna, we can clearly show our strength in the market and be perceived by everyone as a strong, global brand,” says Husqvarna Construction Products President Anders Ströby. ”From a historical perspective, our strengths have been product development, global distribution and also service and support. Now, when we are investing all our resources in a single brand we will become even stronger in these areas.” The launch of Husqvarna will be carried out simultaneously throughout the world and
will be introduced through an advertising campaign, ”Do you see the difference?” in early 2007. As from the start of 2007 products will carry the new logo and will be delivered in the Husqvarna colours of orange and grey. However, during the first year, a certain amount of double branding will occur. This will be done to make the changeover as smooth as possible for customers. ”By changing to a single brand, Husqvarna, we will become more visible, have a clearer profile, and be perceived as one company. Our customers will get better service and support and we will be able to offer more new products,” says Anders Ströby. However, the brand for the stone industry, Diamant Boart, will not be changed. ”Diamant Boart is our strong, global brand for stone operations within Husqvarna Construction Products, which is a totally separate business with its own customers and sales organizations. It is of vital importance that we retain the brand, Diamant Boart, for this operation,” says Anders Ströby.

Tractive gears up for Bauma Tractive AB in Sweden has had a busy year delivering Pentruder wall saws to customers around the world. Since the introduction of the new high frequency driven machines in 2004, and the move to new premises in April 2005, the expansion seems unstoppable. ”We have been very successful with the transition from hydraulically driven to high frequency machines,” says Tractive founder Anders Johnsen. ”I’d like to think that the success is due to the fact that from the day we started the development of our high frequency wall saws, we decided that high frequency is the future, not only as complementary machines, but to completely replace the hydraulic saw, and for all tasks. We have a complete range with four different high performance high frequency wall saws. I think at least one of them suits even the most cautious contractor contemplating a switch from hydraulic to HF.”
Transition phase is over The transition phase of the high performance HFdriven equipment is now over for Tractive and its range of four different models of HF-wall saws that now account for more than 90% of the sales. They still build hydraulic wall saws, but it is very noticeable that Tractive’s customers have understood the advantages gained from the HFtechnology. Since the start in 1997, Tractive has been a leading developer and supplier of high performance concrete wall saws, and this success now continues with the HF-saws. According to Tractive, their flagship product, the Pentruder 820HF, is a powerful, high-performance, wall saw offering unparalleled productivity, reliability and ease of use. “Concrete cutting with wall saws has quickly become a high tech business, whether we like it or not,” adds Anders Johnsen. “Staying competitive and winning in this fast moving business demands a supplier who can deliver a competitive advantage. We have the know-how to do that. Next year we celebrate our 10th anniversary as a wall saw producer with the Pentruder machines, but our first experience from this kind of machinery goes back to 1977 when the first drill gearboxes were built. We built our first wall saw in 1982, and I don’t think any other team has such long experience in this business as we do, and we still
enjoy working with it, so I guess we will be very hard to beat.”
The distribution network Tractive AB export manager Marie Peil, is very pleased with the development and adds: “We have very professional and knowledgeable agents and they have really focused on increasing the market share for Pentruder wall saws. Tractive is growing quickly now, and the number of markets we export to increases all the time. It could go even quicker, but our policy is that we must make sure the agents get the support they need from us, and we expect them to have a competent service organization. If the support is not present, it doesn’t help how good the product is, and that is why a new partner and we spend much time on training technicians and salesmen. We sell equipment offering exceptional productivity, and with adequate service the equipment makes more money for the customer than any other machine. Our customers will be satisfied and they come back to us when they need their next machine.” Germany is a big market for wall saws and there the success of the HF-wall saws has been considerable. Tractive’s agent in Germany, HydroTec GmbH is an expansive company under constant development and is also agents for Eastern Europe, except Poland, where BMTG has sold many Pentruders. As well as in other countries, also in Italy Tractive have a very capable representative Hydro-Tec Switzerland was founded at the beginning of 2006 and already they present very good results. ”It looks very good and Hydro-Tec Switzerland is already expanding their business and we were very happy to see that our new HF-equipment enjoyed such a quick acceptance in the UK, Ireland and Norway. Diaquip in the UK, Diamand Teck in Ireland and Dia-Job in Norway have all done a tremendous job in promoting and selling our products. They have achieved far more than we
thought possible. For really hard flint concrete we will have some news to show at Bauma. We are very proud to finally have been accepted by the very demanding British and Irish customers. Norway was already a strong market for us, but the fact that they accepted the HF-technology so quickly took us by surprise,” says Marie.
“USA and Japan special cases” A market that has become increasingly interesting for Tractive is the USA. Diamond B in Los Angeles has been Tractive’s agent for several years. ”The USA as well as Japan are somewhat special cases,” says Marie. “They work with different voltages to what we use in Europe and most other countries. For the US market we developed special power packs where one difficult challenge was to adapt our HF-system to be driven by existing CCC-type 200V, 400 Hz truck mounted generators. Basically a new frequency inverter and power supply units, with special servo drives, were developed to take full advantage of these powerful generators. Our specialist HF-technician went to the US to finetune the 200V power packs to be run on different 50 - 60Hz generators. It’s moving very fast now and we are very happy with the overwhelming feedback we get through Diamond B” ”The USA is a special case in more ways than their different supply voltages,” adds Anders. ”Our first HF-customer in the Los Angeles, Mark Leonard, has now run his 15 and 22kW HF-motors for many hundreds of hours without any service other than oil changes and replacement of a few cords and connectors. Diamond B has done a very good job in introducing the HF-machines and will attend the World of Concrete in Las Vegas in
January. It will be very exciting to meet with the US customers there. We can finish off 2006 on a positive note, and we are now looking forward to a prosperous 2007 for our customers, agents and ourselves. We will introduce some exciting news in 2007, all aimed at helping our customers to get that extra advantage.” ”2007 is a Bauma-year,” says Marie. ”And we are looking forward to meeting our European and overseas customers at Bauma in April. Such an exhibition is always a very good opportunity to meet customers face to face.”

Adamas and Core Powertools at work in Iceland In a remote part of North East Iceland under harsh weather conditions and limited daylight a gigantic worksite was set up to erect a huge aluminium smelting works for the Alcoa Company. A nearby water reservoir and power station will generate the electricity to produce aluminium from bauxite ore, which is delivered by ships. Thousands of workers are building complex steel and concrete structures for the various buildings, production and storage facilities. Most of the workers are from Poland, but also various local contractors are working on this project, amongst them is the Berserkir ehf concrete drilling and cutting company from Iceland’s capital Reykjavik. They were hired to drill thousands of precision holes in the concrete structures for resin anchors. Hermann ór Baldursson, who is the owner of Berserkir ehf, has invested in various Adamas drill rigs and Core Powertools drill motors for this project. He says that he chose these tools because of the extreme reliability and ease of use. Specifically the high production rate of the Adamas thin wall diamond drill bits is ideal for this project.

“A country to fall in love with” They say that the healties “cousine” can be found in Italy. Olive oil, a big variety of vegetables, root fruites, beans, wine and a lot of other things has found the right place to grow in the Italian soil. Not to forget the cheese, the pasta, the bread, the meat and not to forget the Italian demolition, recycling and concrete cutting industry. On the following pages you find a brief presentation of these industries wrapped up with some photos of typical Italian ingrediences. On the following pages is a presentation of the Italian demolition, recycling and concrete cutting industry. Since PDi Magazine was founded in 2000 the editorial team have visited Italy several times and met with many manufacturers and contractors as well as exhibitions at trade shows.
Italian demolition business. Besides these there are maybe another 50 medium to large demolition companies. But many general excavation contractors also work with demolition and recycling to some extent. The same also applies to the recycling industry.
Many things attract visitors Italy is one of few countries with such a large number of manufacturers of demolition, recycling and concrete cutting equipment. The number of contractors in each sector is also rather large, but does not correspond to the high number of manufacturers. That’s one reason why exports are so high among Italian manufacturers. But it is not only Italy’s industries that attract the visitor. Italy has a remarkable heritage in terms of culture, nature and of course its cuisine.
Below a photo of demolition contractor Cantieri Moderni taking down a six storey silo with a Volvo EC460B close to Lake Iseo, Italy.
Impressive line of manufacturers Italy has a population of approximately 58 million and is one of Europe’s largest countries in terms of population. It is difficult to estimate the number of manufacturers of demolition and recycling equipment, like hydraulic concrete crushers, pulverizers, breakers, sorting grapples, grabs and magnets. It looks like almost every city has one or two companies in this field. The number of well known manufacturers exporting their products is probably around 35 to 40 companies, with a combined sales revenue between Euro 200 to 300 million. Many of these companies have existed for two or three decades, but very few have been involved with demolition tools for more than 10 to 15 years. This has naturally to do with the fact the hydraulic demolition tools, except hydraulic breakers, started to emerge at the end of the 1980s and beginning of the 1990s. Most of the Italian manufacturers in this field have a background in manufacturing different kinds of excavation tools, like buckets. The biggest names with an extensive export business are Trevi Benne, VTN Europe, Mantovanibenne and Indeco. Examples of other increasingly strong companies Socomec, Promove, Italdem, Idromeccanica, Verdelli, Corazza, Demoter, Fran-Ko, Italmek, Zato, CMI and Euromech.
Italy’s demolition industry It is hard to give a clear estimate of the size of the Italian demolition industry. The Italian demolition association NAD was founded in 2003 by the nine biggest demolition contractors (see pages 26) and today the association has around 15 members, which all are considered the biggest in the ITALIAN SUPPLEMENT •
PDi 3
Counting just the demolition attachment market, without hydrualic breakers, the annual market revenue is estimated to be some Euro 50 million. There are no avaialble figures on the value of the hydraulic breaker sector. The Italian brands dominate the market with up to an 80% share, even though manufacturers like Cat/Verachtert, Rammer, Atlas Copco, Montabert, NPK, FRD, Arden Equipment, La Bounty and some Korean brands are improving their positions. The demolition attachment manufacturer Trevi Benne for instance has more then 2,000 Italian customers and domestic sales of demolition and recycling equipment and attachments of Eur 7,000,000.
Aideco combines concrete cutting and demolition When it comes to the Italy has a vast unknown number of companies specialising in making diamond tools and equipment for cutting stone and marble for the concrete sawing and drilling industry. This is not so surprising as Italy is one of leaders in processing natural stone. There are about 15 to 20 companies focusing on manufacturing of diamond tools and equipment for cutting concrete and most are in the northern area of the country. Traditional use of diamond tools in the building and construction industry has quite a long history compared with other European countries like Germany, Sweden and UK. Italy also has a strong association in this sector Associazione Italiana Demolizione Controllata (www.aideco.it), which combines both traditional concrete sawing and drilling and demolition to a bigger extentd than other national associations. Aideco has over 30 members and is a member of the International
Association of Concrete Sawers and Drillers. The total number of concrete sawing and drilling contractors in Italy is estimated at about 200 companies and the average revenue in turnover for an Italian concrete sawing and drilling contractor is around Euro 500,000. As of December 2005 the estimated total market value is about Euro 121 million.
The Italian Demolition Industry:
A Euro 500 million revenue The Italian demolition industry has just as long a history as many other European countries that dates back to the beginning of the 20th century. The industry is now worth an estimted Euro 500 million, but it was only in April 2003 that the first national association of demolition contractors was founded in Italy, named Associazione Nazionale Demolitori Italiani or NAD for short. The founders were the nine biggest Italian demolition contractors which are: CM CANTIERI MODERNI S.r.l DEMICED S.r.l. DEMONT AMBIENTE S.r.l., DESPE S.r.l. ECO-GE S.r.l. F.LLI BARALDI S.p.A. NAD is an affiliate of Federvarie, a chapter of Confindustria, which is Italy’s major grouping of business associations.
2004 NAD is a full member of the European Demolition Association, EDA (see pages 40-42). NAD´s chief objectives are to define parameters as regards applied technologies, safety measures, training and qualification of staff and helping to make this activity with its own specific working methods and standards. To expand its membership, NAD has established a code of ethics that all members are required to observe. The code is outlined in several paragraphs considered to be the founding principles of the association itself. It demands rigorous compliance with environmental regulations, such as the promotion of new technologies designed to minimise dust, noise and vibration outputs, and the implementation of emergency measures in the event of natural disaster of human-induced calamities. The current president and vice presidents of NAD, elected by the majority during the general assembly, are Giuseppi Panseri (president of Despe), Piero Montalbetti (president of Montalbetti) and Fulvio Gotti (managing director of CM Cantieri Moderni).

Current big need of demolition services As in many other countries the demolition actitivy is frequently highest within the manufacturing industry. Along
with expansion, efficient demolition work is paramount. An example of this is the next page demolition story at the Alfa Romeo plant in Arese. The Italian road network is going through an extensive update, which has demanded a lot of demolition work. Further regular building demolition in cities due to construction of apartment houses, shopping centres and business centres needs professional demolition help. According to Beatrice Celina the dominating type demolition applications are the mechanical often with high reach booms. ”Even though the total demolition is dominating, the partial demolition and demolition in connection to renovation work is very common,” says Beatrice Celina. Demolition by implosion is an unusual method in Italy. According to NAD the annual revenue of the Italian demolition industry is around Euro 500 million.

Both excavators have universal rapid couplings to facilitate the inter-changeability of equipment, while the principle machines have traditional couplings directly on their booms The flagship and top of the Trevi Benne range is the HC 100 primary hydraulic jaw crusher, which weighs 11 t and is 3.5 m high. It has a jaw opening of 2.050 mm and a gripping force of over 200 t and is ideal for operating on carrier excavators from 80t - 120 t and an ideal match for the Liebherr 974 Litronic The FR 50 rotating hydraulic crusher allows primary demolition and secondary crushing with just the one attachment working with a single excavator due to its claimed unique characteristics. The 360° hydraulic rotation allows for perfect jaw functioning and permits the FR 50 to operate as a crusher and a primary demolition attachment. The ideal carrier for the FR 50 is an excavator of 45 to 65 t and is one of nine models in the FR series.
Who is General Smontaggi General Smontaggi S.p.A, founded in 1984, began their activity in industrial demolition. Over the following years, they widened their range of operations to include other specific services, such as the removal of material containing asbestos, ground and subsoil land reclamation, and waste disposal and recycling. Going strong for 20 years, the company is now able to offer a global service in situations that require diverse skills, such as the conversion of former industrial sites with inter-related environmental problems, including the decontamination and disposal of processed materials and residues. Approximately 80 people work in General Smontaggi S.p.A, which is constantly updating to the latest operating and regulatory procedures. The company is equipped with modern and appropriate individual protection devices and innovative equipment designed and manufactured with the help and experience of their technicians, and in collaboration with construction companies. Their personnel are specialized in each sector of the company’s activities, and are trained through training courses given by in-house technicians, as well as external instructors. The participation of the specific operating technicians in highly specialized areas is very important, such as the operators who are responsible for the lifting arms and those responsible for the reclamation of hazardous substances. Large and multi-level, as fitting for a highly specialized company, their pool includes more than 80 pieces of large equipment and machines. These include tracked and wheeled vehicles weighing from 20 to 140 t, modular demolition equipment able to cover a working height from 24 to 52 m, mobile sorting and crushing equipment, articulated trucks and dumpers, aerial platforms and telescopic elevators for working at heights of up to 28 m. The approximate 100 strong fleet of ancillary equipment is constantly serviced and maintained, and includes multi-function jaws, crushing machines and hydraulic jack hammers, hydraulic clippers for cold cutting of metal and other remotely controlled equipment. Therefore, the operational and organization in General Smontaggi S.p.A is aimed at the management of a complete planning service for reclamation and demolition, and the execution of all the planned activities in total technical and operative autonomy. The sector in which General Smontaggi S.p.A operates has become particularly important in recent years, with the development of onsite reclamation of contaminated land and the planning, development and realization of ground treatment facilities aimed at the recovery and reuse of land.

A mix of the sweet life ITALY HARBOURS LIKE no other nation an impressive number of manufacturers of equipment for demolition and recycling. The numbers are more modest for diamond tools and equipment and concrete sawing and drilling used in the construction industry. The biggest manufacturers of diamond blades are SEA Diamond Tools, Cuts Diamant Srl and Pentax. The biggest suppliers of diamond tools and equipment for concrete cutting are Cuts Diamant, Dazzini, Co.fi.plast, Diamit, Gamma Utensili. In addition companies Fast Verdini, Trimmer, Comer and Edilgrappa also sell this kind of equipment together with a long line of other types of most handheld construction equipment.

also makes fixed and rotating concrete crushers and pulverisers. Completely new is Indeco’s line of compactors made up of four different models, for use on carriers between 4 t and 45 t. According to Indeco managing director Michele Vitulano, the new compactors ensure better results, faster application times and free up the other machinery, such as mini excavators, backhoe loaders or mid-range excavators, for more suitable tasks. The compactors are manufactured at Indeco’s North American subsidiary. Indeco has also announced that its range of rotating pulverizers would be completed. Following in the footsteps of the IRP 1250, IRP 1000 and IRP 850, which can be used with carriers of 19 t to 50 t, comes the smaller 750, for carriers of 13 t to 25 t. Indeco has also continued the development of its multisystem by launching Multi 750 at Intermat, designed for 16 t to 29 t carriers. The Multi-system series started with the Multi 850 and when complete will be made up of four rotating and three fixed pulverizers, two multisystems and two steel shears. In a previous issue of PDi Magazine www.indeco.it we accidently named Socomec export manager wrongly. His name is Luigi Paini. To the right marketing manager Nicola Barusi.
There is also a large number of demolition and recycling equipment manufacturers. Foreign competitors did not appreciate the Italians entering the international demolition market as they considered the Italian brands were not the right quality and were therefore very competitive in price. Some manufacturers even made copies and some competitors said that it was almost possible to find a breaker manufacturer in every backyard in Italy. Undoubtedly the Italian manufacturers have caused a lot of problems for their competitors, but that is competition. Italy has a genuine mechanical industry tradition, not only within the demolition and recycling sectors, but also in many other industries. There is also a huge domestic need for construction and agricultural equipment. Complaints from foreign competitors have diminished and in many respects new development and innovation often comes from Italy. Proof of this can be found from some Italian exhibitors at any construction equipment show.
30 year anniversary for Indeco There are now about 30 Italian breaker manufacturers, but only a handful export their products. The biggest with a strong international presence is Indeco. The Vitulano family founded Indeco in 1976 and head office and production is located in Bari in the south of Italy. Indeco also has a production plant in USA and sales are through a worldwide network of distributors. Socomec with good reputation Another well-known hydraulic breaker manufacturer is Socomec, which was founded in 1973 and is based in Medesano in the Parma district. Their breaker series has a reputation for smart technical design with high durability and long life. Even though Socomec only makes breakers the company, like Indeco, has started development and production of other types of demolition attachments like crushers. At the last Intermat Socomec introduced four new products. Their crusher range was extended with the model PDO 650, a new scrap shear SCR800 was launched together with three sorting grabs, SPS 400, 500 and 1000 and a new rotation-screening bucket called SBV. Socomec has a strong position in Italy and extensive export activity.

The GELA Refinery breakwater project in Sicily The Betontaglio Ltd Group based in Switzerland and Italy has been involved in a unique and very important project to demolish a section of breakwater at the Gela refinery, Sicily using a diamond wire saw. Over 400 m2 of underwater sawing was carried out in order to raise some of the breakwater’s caissons damaged in a storm in December 2004. The breakwater, situated in front of the refinery and about 2.7 km from shore, was built to shelter oil tankers during loading and unloading. The breakwater can be reached by motor vehicles only by a jetty. Goods and personnel must be ferried daily to the site of the operation. The breakwater, which was built around 40 years ago, is made up of reinforced concrete caissons, each measuring 14m by 20m, and about

15m tall. The caissons were constructed like a honeycomb and arranged in a semi-circle measuring approximately 1,200m long and filled with sand as ballast. During the storm three of the concrete containers were damaged beyond repair and had to be replaced. The operation was completed in a series of operations. First the exposed section of the breakwater was demolished and the caissons emptied of sand by barge-mounted excavators. This was followed by sawing the containers at a depth of 9.5m with a diamond wire saw, cutting them containers in sections to a maximum weight of 90 t, which could then be picked up by crane. New concrete containers, matching the originals, were then positioned and external shell walls extended to complete the renovation. Group Betontaglio Ltd carried out the entire

breakwater. This was completely autonomous and was done using generators, as the entire breakwater electrical system had been destroyed in the storm. The divers then followed on installing the specially designed wire guide device. This was only possible during calm seas, because a sea swell of more than 2m made it impossible for the divers to work and stay in the water. All fixing holes of 250 mm diameter and for the diamond saw threading were carried out using a hydraulic coredrilling machine. Around 160 linear metres of diamond wire were used in the water for the cutting stages at the bottom of the breakwater. All elements were divided in sections of 50-90 t and lifted out using a Liebherr 200 t crane.

European Demolition Association:
The European lobbyist for the demolition industry Since 1978 the European Demolition Association has promoted the interests of the demolition industry on the continent. A lot of work has been done but a lot is still needed as the importance of demolition is rapidly increasing. In fact, the work will probably will never cease because the world is changing so fast. Text: Heikki Harri Photo: Jan Hermansson
“EDA is an interesting association, because within the national demolition associations, we combine the demolition contractors and the manufacturers that supply the related equipment. This way all parties benefit, since the contractors can present their needs and the manufacturers can listen and act accordingly, and the national associations present the opinion of all parties at EDA level,” says EDA Managing Director Dick Theunissen. “Maybe even more importantly, EDA is the body to promote and protect the interests of the demolition industry within the European Union. The number of projects we are involved in is quite large. Our role is to support the development of the EU legislation by expressing the opinion of the industry to Brussels. A very important aspect here is, while being a vital element in the legislative and directive work, we also keep in mind the interests of construction companies trying to keep under control the costs of running an individual demolition contractor’s business.”
which could join us,” says Theunissen. “For some others, there are various reasons for not joining the EDA, which is of course unfortunate for us, but also for them. They miss quite a lot because they cannot participate in modelling the EU legislation and guidelines and miss the opportunities of exchanging the high standard of knowledge. On the other hand, more association members consequently provide us a stronger position in representing the European demolition market. However, all industries, including demolition, are today becoming more and more international, and I am sure that the parties willing to participate in the development of the demolition industry at the pan-European level, benefit from this.” “The EDA also offers the opportunity of individual membership, the so called International Committee member. For contractors and suppliers this means the exchange of
Uniform legislation Dick Theunissen says that the EDA’s primary objective is to create a uniform level playing field within the European community. “Within EDA, the various member groups supplementary combine an interactive relationship and the practical experience of businesses, and that is where the exchange of information and knowledge is very important,” says Theunissen. “A good example of how EDA works in practice comes from the UK’s National Federation of Demolition Contractors. The NFDC has recently finalized their Guidance Notes on how to work with High Reach Demolition machinery (see page 42). This project was initiated at an EDA conference in Cyprus two years ago, and when the project is completed, EDA will take the document to Brussels in order to promote it as a European standard.”
EDA - the combination of national associations
EDA’s current President Jan Brandis at the opening session.
EDA was founded in 1978 by the national associations of France, Germany, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. The association has its headquarters in Baarn, the Netherlands. Today there are eight national association members in the EDA. They are the Netherlands, UK, France, Spain, Denmark, Ireland, Italy and Sweden, which is the newest member and joined at the EDA Stockholm conference in October 2006. “There are quite a few countries that are not yet members. One reason is that in many countries, there is still no demolition related association, During the Stockholm conference Dick Theunissen, left, had numerous discussions with the current EDA president, Jan Brandis from Denmark. The presidency rotates among the presidents of the national associations every three years.

concrete information and knowledge about products, methods of work, techniques and experiences. To put it shortly: EDA is the European network for all parties concerned,” Mr Theunissen explains. Publications, presentations, demonstrations and round table discussions facilitate these processes. By allowing not only contractors but also suppliers to form a part of the network will result in an increasing knowledge of demolition practices all over the continent. “Logically, the more members we have, the better the network and the results derived from it. When there are more and more contractors in the practical work, the better contacts and information the suppliers get. The ultimate goal naturally is to get as many members as possible, because then the importance of EDA grows towards a stronger pressure group to look after the interests of the European demolition industry,” Mr Theunissen concludes.
Mantovanibenne: “EDA - a venue for business contacts” “We live in a dynamic industry that develops fast. Therefore we want to exploit all the avenues available. One such and important avenue is the European Demolition Association, since the venue offers us the opportunity to meet the end users and update continuously our knowledge of the demolition industry in terms of methods, procedures, EU and national regulations added by the anticipation of the future,” says Mantovanibenne Export Manager Christophe Jarrin. Mantovanibenne is an Italian supplier of a wide range of machines, tools and attachments for the demolition, recycling and construction industries. Mantovanibenne has been an EDA member from the beginning. “We cannot give enough value to all the contacts, results and experience we have been able to gather over the many years of the membership. It is somehow indicative that so many of the big players on the global scene are not EDA members because, obviously from their perspective, the demolition industry is a niche
market and they concentrate in the main stream businesses. On the other hand, the smaller size companies, like Mantovanibenne, have taken the time and effort to work closely with EDA and its members because this is our main stream business,” adds Christophe Jarrin.
EDA improvements Mantovanibenne stresses that it is satisfied with EDA, but believes there are some areas where EDA could improve its actions towards suppliers. “It is understandable the EDA looks for sponsorships but the suppliers would look forward to more meetings and factory visits from time to time,” says Christophe Jarrin. “The meeting in Stockholm was a major achievement by EDA. It
was well organized and rich in terms of content and information and I learned a lot. Probably the most important improvement would be if the EDA established a system by which the association members would be labelled as ’EDA certified’ companies with a recommendation to contractors to buy from them.”
Rammer: “Contractors the core audience” “While some manufacturers and suppliers such as Rammer have enjoyed a long membership of EDA, my view is that the contractors are and should remain the core member group within the association,” adds Rammer Recycling and Demolition
Manager Jaakko Lipsanen. Rammer, part of Sandvik Mining and Construction, is a Finnish manufacturer of hydraulic breakers and has extended its product range in recent years to cover many types of demolition tool attachments. “For us the membership simply offers an access to a source of information. Usually companies
have a lot of opportunities to participate in a huge variety of various types of organizations and events and they just compare the investment against the benefit and make decisions accordingly. For us at Rammer, the participation in the EDA events is worthwhile. And when the EDA is useful to contractors, everyone benefits from it.”

“Recycled aggregates potentially cheaper than primary materials” Recycled aggregates often turn out to be cheaper than primary materials, at least in some applications. The price can be affected by many factors including savings on taxes and fees, reduction of purchase cost of ’new’ materials, and reduction of transport costs. These were some of the conclusions presented by Danish research institute DBT Engineering civil engineer Ida Henrichsen There are even further benefits, particularly recycling on-site, which results in a reduction of traffic, exhaust and dust pollution. ”However, as so often, the coin has two sides. The application of recycled aggregates is not effortless or costless. Some of the additional costs, which should be taken into account, include the increasing cost of demolition, additional cleaning and cleansing of the structures and materials, higher level of testing, preparation, and crushing of the materials to the desired sizes. Also the quality control must be stricter because of the inherent variation in materials,” ads Ida Henrichsen.
properly. This emphasizes the need for strong co-ordination between the recycling companies, material end-users and the demolition industry. The relative economical benefits of a given application largely depend on the application grade. However, as Ida Henrichsen says, the type
Process planning important Most of these costs can, however, be significantly reduced and the value of the material for the chosen Ida Henrichsen. applications can be optimised if the planning of the entire process, from demolition of suitable application for a given material to application of the recycled materials, is done depends on a number of factors, such as the
degree of contamination and the cleansing treatment, the cleanness of the material and hence the applicable demolition techniques and storage of the material. To optimise the material value the entire process must be thoroughly planned and co-ordinated. One of the first steps in the planning phase is the decision of the chosen end-of-life scenario. ”When treating recycled materials there are three end-life scenarios to look at. These are land-filling, external recycling and recycling on site,” adds Ida Henrichsen. ”The decision regarding which one of these is the most applicable depends on many parameters. They can include national legislation or regulation, size of project, distance to recycling plant, distance to land-filling or depositing site, cost of demolition and the value of the recycled materials and such the decision is therefore very country specific.” Currently guidelines are being developed within the context of the EU financed Integrated Decontamination and Rehabilitation of Buildings, Structures and Materials in Urban Renewal research project. This has the aim of facilitating the application of recycled aggregates in construction.

Guidance notes for high reach demolition rigs Safety and economy were the principal objectives for the new set of ’High Reach Demolition Rig Guidance Notes’ that were presented to the audience at the European Demolition Association conference in Stockholm. The definition of a ’High Reach’ machine is not a crane but a tracked vehicle equipped with a boom reaching the working height of 15m and above.
UK National Federation of Demolition Contractors National Secretary Howard Button.

The notes were compiled in the UK by the National Federation of Demolition Contractors and presented by National Secretary Howard Button. The work was initiated at an EDA conference in Cyprus two years ago and is now a document that EDA will take to the EU to make it part of European regulations. ”While safety naturally is the most important aspect, it is necessary to keep in mind that safety should be achieved without unnecessary, excessive or prohibitive expenditure,” says Howard Button. ”This type of guidance is never ready, so it naturally calls for further discussions, remarks and additional recommendation. In the UK, we have never recorded a fatality involving a high or ultrahigh reach vehicle in a demolition project, but as the machines are getting bigger, higher and their numbers increasing, the NFDC decided to produce the document. Furthermore, we hope that this guidance will form the basis of further discussions between all parties concerned, namely those involved in the manufacture, supply and use of these machines and also those involved in prescribing, monitoring and policing safe working practices.”

Nimbus service keeps the blades cutting Nimbus is proud to play a part in the success of Alfred McAlpine’s unique Welsh Slate production operation at Penrhyn in Wales. Months of close cooperation between the two companies have resulted in a new Nimbus range of advanced-technology diamond blades to complement the plant’s state-of-the-art Pedrini primary saws, multi-blade machines and horizontal splitting saws. The new £6million, 6,500m2 factory at Penrhyn produces millions of roofing slates each year which are now sawn to size rather than riven. Much of the success achieved by the Nimbus products stems from an intensive cooperation exercise between the company’s R&D department at Burgess Hill and the Nimbus field team on site. In particular, the dedication of Nimbus key accounts manager Allan Cork has clearly made a major contribution to the Nimbus impact on site. The exhaustive trials carried out included tests in Italy using Nimbus blades, Pedrini machines and material supplied by Welsh Slate.
This has resulted in the creation of a new blade specification with a specially engineered grit/ bond system designed to meet the demanding Welsh Slate requirements. But the development and perfection of diamond tools is only part of the story. With upwards of 100 blades cutting simultaneously, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, Welsh Slate’s need for an exceptional blade management service was obvious from the start. And with its unparalleled UK manufacturing facilities at Burgess Hill and Leeds, coupled with a reputation as the country’s top supplier in its field, Nimbus became the clear choice to provide the level of service required. In the event, with the full strength of the Nimbus organization behind them, Allan Cork and his colleagues have created a level of on-site service that is quite extraordinary. This requires a continuing Nimbus presence on site to monitor performance and to ensure that blade supply continues to run like clockwork. In support of its all-embracing blade ma-

Hughes & Salvidge takes Mantovanibenne Attachments
“Shaken but not stirred” Hughes & Salvidge, the well-known UK specialist demolition contractor has recently completed dismantling the 007 James Bond stage at the Pinewood Studios complex in Iver Heath, Buckinghamshire. This followed a serious fire, which meant that the one acre sized steel framed building, which housed the set, had to be completely demolished. The stage and building are being replaced and this will be ready in the New Year. Hughes & Salvidge was so pleased with the performance of their first Mantovanibenne attachments, an SH400 shear and an MS30 Multisystem, they placed another order with importers INMALO for a second shear, an SH410, which made its debut on the prestigious Pinewood Studios contract. For this demolition task, Hughes & Salvidge used a combination of their Mantovanibenne MS30 multi-system attachment and the new SH410 scrap shear. The MS30 was mounted onto a Hitachi Zaxis ZX460 crawler excavator equipped with 27 m of high-reach boom and stick. The SH410 was attached to another ZX460 on standard boom.

Darda crushers demolish 65m tall building:
“David meets Goliath” In many parts of Eastern Germany blocks of flats and high-rise buildings, which no longer meet current standards, are being demolished. These included a 22-storey, 65 m tall building in Halle and situated in a residential area with smaller houses and two identical blocks of flats and roads nearby. To avoid the risk of flying or falling debris two Darda CC420concrete crushers were used in combination with a pair of 3 t mini excavators. The two CC420 concrete crushers started the demolition on the top storey of the reinforced concrete building and bit their way down floor by floor. With an opening width of 420 mm the CC420 can break reinforced concrete up to 400 mm thick, making it easy for the two crushers to nibble away the ceilings and inner and outer walls of each storey. The debris was dropped down the building’s lift shaft and removed from the bottom by another excavator.
Each floor took about four to five working days to remove with the concrete crushers taking out about 150 m3 of concrete each time with reinforcement steel of 12 - 16 mm. The Darda machines’ cutting force of up to 1240 kN (126 t) allows reinforcement up to a diameter of 28 mm to be cut. On completion of the demolition of each floor a crane lifted the mini-excavators to the storey below for the cycle to continue to ground level. Originally it was planned to demolish the 65 m high building, using a combination of the mini excavators with Darda crushers, down to 25 m followed by completion using a long reach excavator with pulverizer. However, the demolition with the CC420s went so well that the original plan was abandoned, leaving the Dardas to complete the entire demolition of the 65 m high building.

Coating removal on 5,000 m2 floor The owner of a 5,000 m2 production facility in the South of Germany was about to change the lease contract and as the 15 year old coating was worn out and showing a lot of cracks, it was agreed to have the complete surface renovated. To reduce the loss of rental revenue, the time between the change over was kept to a minimum. As there were a lot of different repairs needed in the factory the time for the coating renovation was set at 5 days from removal to application of the new layer. The most critical issue was the short time given to do the job without risking a penalty. Another difficulty was hidden iron bolts from former installations, partly covered by the old coating and could have a serious impact on machine and tool damage. With the DSM 800SDOC, equipped with a drive overload clutch, Schwamborn could offer a perfect solution, giving the contractor the extra safety and reliability when grinding with the machine over obstacles as well as the high grinding performance for the short time span. To remove the top coating the contractor used a specially developed scarifying tool on the first pass. For the final pass, prior to application of the new coating, the surface was ground with a 30-grit diamond tool.
Due to the reliability and efficiency of the DSM 800SDOC the project was carried out in time to the complete satisfaction of the owner and the new occupier.

Adamas refocus long term stragety PDi recently visited the company’s headquarters close to Rotterdam to report on what we can expect of Adamas in the near future.
The Dutch Adamas Group, with manufacturing plants in the Netherlands and Belgium, is in the process of setting up a new strategy with distinct product ranges to become a major player in the market of diamond tools and machines for cutting and drilling. Text & Photo: Mikael Karlsson
The Adamas group has some 115 employees focused on producing and selling diamond tools, drill rigs, drill motors, floor saws and wall cutting systems, products within five distinct and strategic groups for growth.
32
Refocused long term strategy Adamas started its business in the late 1970s as a general reseller of various products for the construction industry. In 1980 the company decided to set up a production line for diamond drill rigs in the Netherlands, and another production plant for diamond tools in Belgium. As a result of the ongoing investments in research and product development and cutting edge technology in manufacturing, product quality has always been paramount and has lead to a steady rise in customer satisfaction and production volumes. “But for several years now the whole industry has been going through a rapid transformation and is still very much in motion,” says Adamas export marketing manager Danny van der Zwan. “There are currently lots of diamond tools imported from Asia. Today, most of them are coming from China, but there will soon be other Asian countries that will start with the production and export of diamond tools and machines. We are well aware of that and of course have to respond to the new situation.” Due to this, Adamas has refocused the long-term company strategy over the last two years. The goal is now to concentrate on developing and selling those diamond tools and machines where the company has the cutting edge technology and knowhow for customers to benefit the most. “We want to develop and sell only top quality products but with a reasonable price. And we aim to be regarded as a global supplier with a fast and trustful service support and spare parts supplies for our customers,” says Danny van der Zwan. “This of course means that we can’t do everything and have small volumes. We need to concentrate on specific products where we can sell large volumes in order to be cost effective and reach a competitive price level for the customers and still maintain a healthy margin for our dealers.” Concerning drill motors and drill rigs the company has already managed to do this by attracting several big companies that sell the products under the Adamas brand name as well as under their own private label.
Five product groups for growth Adamas has identified five distinct and strategic product groups for growth. These are diamond tools, drill rigs, drill motors, floor saws and wall cutting systems. The company is also making a strong effort to develop a worldwide network of dealers. “For many years we have had our own sales offices and staff in Holland, France and Belgium which can be classified as our traditional home markets where we have very strong and even a market leading position in some niche market segments,” says Danny. “In addition we are concentrating on developing a worldwide dealer network. In the tough market

Adamas has a manufacturing plant for drill rigs in Holland and a plant for diamond tools in Belgium. conditions today, where end users can get products from anywhere, not the least on the Internet, it is too much to demand from a dealer to sell Adamas products on an exclusive basis.” Therefore, Adamas is searching for sales organisations that are motivated and able to sell top quality products in a professional way by establishing a long-term partnership with the manufacturer as well as the end user of Adamas products. Together with this, Adamas is developing a new dealer website with direct access for the dealers to get all the necessary information and assistance for products and product support that they need to market their products efficiently.
New product groups There are also new Adamas product groups in the pipeline, which are to be launched in 2007. One is a complete range of wall chasing machines. The other new products will be revealed during the Bauma 2007 exhibition in Munich, Germany together with a new corporate identity. Since the beginning of 2006 the company has noted a significant increase in sales in all of Europe due to the investments in the new strategy and a general upturn in the economic growths. “And in general, the use of diamond tools is increasing all over the world for drilling and cutting since labour costs are increasing. So we are actually very confident about the future,” adds Danny van der Zwan.

THE NEW FINMAC F16 REMOTELY controlled demolition robot from Finland is making history. It is the first for a long time to challenge the Swedish demolition robot manufacturer Brokk, which has dominated the industry since the beginning of the 1970s and some years ago acquired its then only competitor DMX, also manufactured in Sweden.
has struck. And a new remote controlled demolition robot is about to be launched, and it is not a Brokk.
No easy task The appearance of a new brand is not a complete surprise and to challenge Brock will not be an easy task. However, the world’s demolition contractors will soon have two manufacturers of demolition robots to choose from. Despite the potential, Finmac still has some work to do. The prototype is finished and now the company is planning production of the 0-series, which will be tested thoroughly out in the field, prior to its launch. In April the demolition robot will be displayed at Bauma 2007 in Munich, Germany.
Met the technique in the foundry industry
From the left Timo Karhunen and Paavo Salonen.

The man behind the Finmac project is Paavo Salonen and his first contact with demolition robots occurred while he was working with stripping linings from kilns at a foundry in Sweden. This was a difficult job done by hand, but soon a Brokk demolition robot replaced him and his colleagues. This experience set the seed for his interest in the potential for using demolition robots. After he finished working for the foundry and several years as salesman and purchaser at Valmet Logging in the north of Sweden, he started his own company where he was selling different types of components to the mechanical industry. Paavo was then approached by a company called Thordab asking if he was interested in selling the demolition robot DMX in Finland. It was an easy choice as Paavo is Finnish. “I made rather quick decision that there was a good market for the DMX robot in Finland. But just when I got started and was about to close my first orders DMX was bought by the competitor Brokk and I lost some money,” says Finmac Demolition Oy managing director Paavo Salonen. “After loosing the possibility to work with DMX I got even more interested in these types of products and I decided to find other ways to sell this type of equipment. Northern Finland, a technical hub Paavo has lived in Umeå in the north of Sweden for many years. But Finmac Demolition Oy was set up in Vaasa in northern Finland, just a cross the Baltic Sea. Besides Paavo Salonen the Finmac company is owned by the engineering company Dowaline Oy and the mechanical manufacturer Nipere Oy. Paavo got in contact with these two companies through the government owned technologic centre Merinova Oy. One of Merninova’s tasks is to support new technological business ideas that are beneficial for the country. Thanks to Merinova Finmac also received financial help through the Finnish government institutions Tekes and Finnvera, which offer loans and export financing to new companies or special export projects. “But our investors have just loaned us the money. Everything needs to be paid back when production is up and running. We have also received a small financial subsidy from TE-Keskus, also a government owned institution,” says Paavo.
Strong partners The two part owners, Dowaline and Nipere, have long experience in their respective fields of operation. The engineering and design company Dowaline has nine design engineers and operates from premises next door to Finmac in Vaasa. Dowaline is owned by Timo Karhunen. Nipere Oy was founded in 1976 and is a traditional manufacturer of mechanical components. Nipere manufacture components for other companies but develops and produces their own product lines as well, like complete systems for handling different types of grain. Head office is located in Teuva some 100 km south of Vaasa. When the Finmac project started Nipere realised that they needed bigger premises and invested in additional facilities for the Finmac production located in the city of Kristinestad, right on the shore of the Baltic Sea some 30 km west of Teuva. A couple of new computer controlled multi functional manufacturing machines were also installed in the new premises. The assembling of the Fimac robot will be located in Kristinestad as well as some of the component production. The sheet metal production and welding will be done in Teuva. The company has several laser welding machines that can handle sheet metal plates up to 20 mm. Nipere has 45 employees but when the Finmac production starts more will be employed. Nipere is a family company founded by Reino Ollikkala and the current managing director is his son Ari Ollikkala, who is also chairman of Finmac Demolition Oy. “We agreed immediately to the Finmac idea when Paavo contacted us. With the manufacturing knowledge we have coupled with Dowaline experience I am really looking forward to start manufacturing the first robots,” says Ari Ollikkala. What makes Finmac Demolition unique is that they develop everything on their own and also manufacturer most of the components, which are developed in-house. All standard components though are purchased from well known manufacturers like Parker Hannifin, BoschRexroth and SauerDanfoss. Another Finnish engineering company is providing the steering system for the robot. Control box, joystick and other parts for the steering function are standard components as it is important that the operator recognises these functions in order to prevent accidents.

Profitable with out failures When PDi met the three owners all were very enthusiastic and all said that the contractor is paramount. “We have in our development work been focusing on a machine that will make money for the contractor right from the start. All stops must be planned and I think we have been able to build in several safety functions that prevent unwanted failures. The power function of the machine is completely computerised which makes it very easy to locate a failure in seconds. It is similar to how you locate a problem in a car and we can also through this system register if the operators has been running the machine incorrectly,” says Paavo. Finmac F16 has two hydraulic systems, which makes it possible to easily separate the upper part from the lower part. This function also makes it possible to access confined spaces. The upper part with the robot arm is carried in to a building while the lower part, with the hydraulic tank, stands outside. The machine is radio controlled but has also a cable if radio control is not allowed. Finmac F16 weighs approximately 1.6 t and places itself between the well known Brokk 90 and Brokk 180. The centre of gravity is very low, which makes the machine stable and the power pack is located in the lower part of the machine, similar to how Brokk 250 and DMX 520. The demolition boom has a reach of some 5 m and has an extension part reaching an additional 700 mm. In the transport position the machine has a length of 2257 mm, height of 1550 mm and width of 795 mm with the support legs in the upper position. Transport speed is 2,8 km/h and ground clearance 15 mm. The effect can be varied between 7,5 to 22. At 18.5 kW the machine has an oil flow of 66 l/min and a working pressure of 160 bar. Finmac F16 has been designed to carry attachments up to 200 kg. It is track mounted and tracks are available in both rubber and steel.
“The biggest sales volumes will come from USA where we already have some contacts. As we are going to exhibit at Bauma we are hoping to make contact with potential sales representatives and service partners,” says Paavo. The Finmac F16 is not a low budget machine, according to the owners. “We are using only the best components, but as we are producing several components ourselves our price level will be slightly under what the market already is used too,” says Paavo.
Additional models and accessories As Finmac Demolition is about to introduce their first demolition robot there does not appear to be any other models in the pipeline at the moment. “Finmac F16 takes all our attention of course. But if it is well received by the market we are of course open to produce additional models. If this happens I think we will go for a smaller model first. But what we are looking at already now is several accessories to the F16. One example is a mobile diesel generator trolley for self-transportation and also operation in areas without electricity. But for the moment we want to remain humble towards the situation to launch Finmac F16 in a proper way. Our product or we as company cannot let our potential clients down,” says Paavo Salonen. The Finmac F16 with be on display at Bauma in hall A1.

Immediate export business Home market is Finland and the number of units to be sold in Finland is expected to be high. But Sweden is expected to initially become the biggest market, parallel with the US. “Remote controlled demolition robots are very well known in Sweden and the need is also big. Same thing with the US market. We expect to sell around 15 machines in the first year and our target is 30 machines in the second year,” says Ari Ollikkala. “We will have production capacity for more machines, but we don’t want to raise expectations too high.” 5 - DEC. 2006 - JAN. 2007 •

Terex Pegson XR400 crusher for UK demolition contractor The UK based demolition and recycling contractor DRS Demolition National, has taken delivery of a Terex Pegson XR400 tracked jaw crusher, which is being used by DRS to reduce a large stockpile of demolition concrete into a saleable product. “We are very pleased with the performance of the crusher,” says DRS site manager Nick Southall. ”It has exceeded our expectations in all areas, being user friendly and cost effective in terms of product output and reliability.” The 1100 mm x 650 mm jaw crusher has a crushing action, which draws material down into the crushing chamber, maximising the throughput of the machine. An unrestricted feed opening allows large material sizes to be accepted without prior breaking. The fully skirted, 1m wide conveyor discharges the crushed material at a height of 3.9 m forward of the machine for improved stockpiling.
Water sprays above and below the crusher and at the conveyor head keep any dust emissions to a minimum. An overband magnet mounted over the conveyor takes out any metals in the material stream to the side of the plant for recycling. The conveyor can be lowered hydraulically to reduce machine headroom when travelling and A 172 kW Caterpillar C9 diesel engine provides power for the crusher, which is controlled by a PLC with automatic sequence start-up and shutdown. One of the many benefits of this new X400 range of machines is the HFO direct drive system, which makes for substantial fuel savings against similar sized competitors’ machines. Built-in serviceability has resulted in easy access to the crusher drive and power pack with hydraulic and oil filter changes extended to 2,000 hour intervals.

New Breaker from Bobcat Bobcat has launched the new HB1180 hydraulic breaker attachment that is approved for use on Bobcat skid-steer models S220 through to the S300, compact tracked loader models T250 to T300, the A300 all-wheel steer loader and Bobcat 337, 341 and 435 mini-excavators. The HB1180 is intended for concrete and general demolition work and features a new internal design with fewer moving parts, reducing overall service time. The HB1180 breaker also has an auto power feature, which is an automatic pressure regulator that ensures maximum performance of the hydraulic breaker, regardless of tool carrier hydraulic flow variations or changes in outdoor temperature. This allows Bobcat hydraulic breakers to deliver a high performance impact blow across a very wide range
40
of hydraulic oil flow from different carriers. The auto power feature also limits excessive pressure at the time of start-up resulting in protecting the energy chamber diaphragm and allowing for longer service life. The energy chamber diaphragm allows the nitrogen pressure to remain constant, so the breaker performance remains constant. No periodic recharging is required, so the breaker is virtually maintenance-free and operational as soon as it is mounted on the carrier. Bobcat hydraulic breakers are easy to mount thanks to quick-change mounting systems. They can be utilised on a multitude of Bobcat machines, including mini track loaders, skidsteers, compact tracked loaders, all-wheel steer loaders and micro-, mini- and midi-excavators.

IACDS release second edition of its standard “Tolerances and Limits for Construction Drilling and Sawing” The International Association of Concrete Drillers & Sawers has announced the release of an updated and amended second edition of its standard Tolerances and Limits for Construction Drilling and Sawing. It was developed through the cooperation of sawing and drilling associations from Australia, Austria, Germany, Italy, Japan, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom and the United States. The IACDS Tolerance standard consists of nine sections that cover definitions, reason for the issuance of tolerances and maximum tolerances for each sawing and drilling discipline, including core drilling, flat sawing, wall sawing and wire sawing. Also covered in the standard are maximum tolerances for crushing and bursting. ”Tolerances form the preconditions during planning for accuracy or possible limitations and the requirement for the tradesman,” says representative of the Swiss Association Kaspar Disch, who was instrumental in the development of this standard. ”The standard is intended to separate the amateur from the professional.” The tolerances for each different discipline are defined by 8 separate measurements, including angle accuracy, directional accuracy, verticality, horizontal level, surface roughing, diameter of deviation from a specified dimension, specified depth for pocket hole and alignment accuracy. A typical standard for core drilling holes under 300 mm in diameter is a minimum accuracy angle of +/- 85 mm/m, a directional accuracy of +/- 60 mm/m with an inside evenness not surpassing 5 mm and a maximum diameter deviation of 3 mm. The alignment accuracy is +/- 5mm plus
2.5% of the diameter. The first edition was published in 2002. An international group of specialists has updated and improved the standard, unifying all units, clarifying difficult definitions and adding a standard for alignment accuracy. The IACDS delegates adopted the second edition at their annual meeting in Kraków, Poland, in May 2006. The IACDS Tolerance standard is now available on the IACDS Web site www.iacds.org in the ”news” section, where it is available for download in English (including European and U.S. units) and German. A Swedish version will be available shortly. The standard is meant for everyday work with diamond tools on job sites. Whenever more precise tolerances are needed, then this standard serves as a solid base for negotiations between specifiers and contractors. National associations are invited to adopt the standard to their specific features.
