A complete new development of impact mechanism minimizes the discharge of vibration to the excavator, as well reduces the operators vibration stress drastically. In relation with this new developed breaker body, the fully closed frame with rubber plugged service points and a new worldwide patented rod arrangement, gives a considerable reduction in noise levels of 7db. Because of FRD optimized the applied materials with a new hardness process, a higher efficiency at same operation weight is guaranteed.

Dear readers, It is amazing how time flies. As I write this, the new year is just a few days away. And by the time you read it, we will be well into January and preparing for the start of World of Concrete 2013. The year 2102 turned out to be a rather difficult one for the industries PDi covers. Asia has been dipping on many markets, including China. Europe moves like a crawfish. The US market is still struggling despite trends of recovery in the construction industry—important signals not only to the US itself, but also European and Asian manufacturers. An area of the world that is actually still booming in South America, even with the influence of negative economic trends elsewhere. In addition to the continuing strong numbers in Brazil, Chile, and Argentina, we now see Mexico among the handful of “booming” countries in the world. And what will then happen in 2013? The person who could predict what will happen with confidence and accuracy would surely be someone we’d all want to know. It appears the Chinese market is recovering and expected to grow somewhat in 2013. Europe is more difficult to forecast, but most signs point to increase of 1 to 2%. I think the US will see a similar rate of growth. So for 2013, it seems South America remains the most promising market. That’s where you want to do your business 2013, and maybe 2104 as well. This is also something that the PDi management is focusing on. For years, we have planned to increase our presence in the Americas. Now, we are finally taking that step with the launch of a new magazine very similar to PDi, called Professional Demolition Americas (PDa). We will start out rather carefully with two pilot issues in 2013, one in March and another in September. LikePDi, PDa will offer coverage on a mix of topics—demolition, recycling, hydrodemolition, concrete sawing and drilling, concrete floor grinding and polishing, extraction of dust and slurry, clearance, removal of hazardous material, and so on. As a “Pan-American” magazine, PDa will be distributed only in the Western Hemisphere. So next year, look out for PDa. For more information about it you can contact me or visit the website www.pdamericas.com to download a presentation. You may note that this issue of PDi looks somewhat different. For almost a decade, we have published columns from the various demolition and concrete sawing and drilling associations. As PDi comes out bi-monthly, it is quite a job for the various key persons in those associations to submit texts in addition to their regular responsibilities. As a result, their presence in PDi has been rather inconsistent. So, we have decided to suspend those columns for a while, and create a new feature called “Open Column.” Anyone is invited to contribute their thoughts on a subject of interest to any of the industries PDi covers. A contributor can be an association, a manufacturer, a contractor, a customer of those services—anyone who has insights to share with our readers. You’ll also see that this issue of PDi is packed with interesting features and surveys. Despite the generally dismal economic issues I discussed earlier, a lot has happened during 2012. During the autumn, our manufacturers began gearing up for the always highly anticipated Bauma exhibition, which takes place in Munich in April 2013. Bauma has a great effect on our industries, regardless of the economic climate. In this issue you can read about some of the new products that will be released at Bauma, or at the US show World of Concrete in February. And if you’re attending these shows, please come by and meet us. PDi will be in booth C4246 at World of Concrete, and A1.134 at Bauma. Before I close my column for 2012, I would like to take the opportunity to thank our readers and advertisers for your continued support this past year. All of us at PDi hope that 2013 will be a year of good business and good health for you and your loved ones.

Around 500 people, including JCB employees and members of the public, slithered and slid around a five mile course over 20 obstacles near to the grounds of JCB’s world headquarters in Rocester, Staffordshire. The money will go towards the company’s £1M (EUR1.24M) National Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Children appeal to support Carole House, a specialist NSPCC centre in Newcastle-under-Lyme, which is dedicated to saving babies and young children across Staffordshire from abuse and harm.

More exhibition space at Bauma Africa 2013 Exhibition space at the first Bauma Africa, scheduled for 18 to 21 September 2013, at the Gallagher Convention Centre, Midrand Johannesburg, South Africa is being increased to 35,000m2, almost double the originally planned 20,000m2. The increase is due to the space exhibitors have requested from the organizer, MMI South Africa. “We have received inquiries for up to 2,000m2 of exhibition space,” says MMI South Africa chief executive officer Elaine Crewe. “Although this is certainly unusual for a debut event in a new market, it is a clear demonstration of the confidence placed by exhibitors in our ability to organise trade fairs for construction machinery.”

open column For close to a decade PDi has in each issue published columns from the different branch associations in our industries. For the key persons within the associations it is quite a challange to have something new to say in each issue of PDi. That is why we would like to try something different now where we welcome anyone to contributed under the title “Open Column”. There are no limitations of columns or subjects and the word is free. You will for sure receive message for the branch association too but not in ever issue. In our first column a well-known name starts out, John Woodward, former president of Institute of Demolition Engineers.

Training Joins the Digital Age At least once a week, UK demolition operatives are required to attend an on-site briefing meeting known universally as a Toolbox Talk. These Toolbox Talks take place in the morning, usually last for 10 to 15mins, and cover a whole range of work-related topics from refresher tips on accident prevention and asbestos awareness, through to more job specific talks on what workers might encounter during the coming working day. Despite the fact that they are a legal requirement and a key contributor to site safety, these Toolbox Talks face a number of key challenges. First, familiarity breeds contempt. Listening to the site manager repeating the same worn-out phrases, week in and week out, means that workers become distracted and do not, therefore, absorb the information provided. Secondly, site managers are not always the best communicators. In fact, since many have worked alongside their fellow workers previously in a like-for-like role, it can be hard for them to engage with their audience or to be taken seriously. Perhaps the biggest challenge of all, consistency, can be an issue. Some weeks the Toolbox Talk might be accompanied by visuals or printed
handouts, the next they might not. Sometimes they are delivered by a senior person that commands the respect and attention of the audience, and sometimes they are not. That is why, later this month, C&D Consultancy will be launching a suite of 12 free Toolbox Talk videos. Professionally produced and kindly sponsored by ECY Haulmark, these new videos are designed to overcome the key Toolbox Talk challenges of authority, engagement and expertise. Covering subjects as diverse as respiratory protective equipment, accident response, traffic management and other demolition related subjects, these videos will be available via YouTube, but will also be made available for free download later this month. Initially, all the videos are less than five minutes long, allowing them to be integrated into a contractor’s own regular Toolbox Talk programme. They are also available only in English at this time. However, it is hoped that future developments of the Toolbox Talk videos will see longer and more detailed films and, possibly, multi-language versions. In addition, we are hoping to produce further films based on specific contractor requests and will even brand these new videos with the contractor’s name and logo if required. Full details of the talks and all of our demolition related training courses are available at www. demolitiontraining.com To pre-order your FREE Toolbox Talk video downloads, please email me at: john.woodward@ demolishdismantle.co.uk. Keltbray wins 2012 world demolition award In the UK demolition contractor Keltbray has won the 2012 World Demolition Awards’ Urban Demolition Award for work carried out at 30 Old Bailey and 60 Ludgate Hill in London. This follows an earlier City of London Considerate Contractors Scheme award for Performance Beyond Compliance for work carried out at this site. Keltbray was also highly commended in the categories of Contract of the Year and Safety & Training. The World Demolition Awards were presented on 1 November as part of the World Demolition Summit in Amsterdam, and Keltbray secured the accolade on the back of the complexity of the project, including the large scale and technical challenges, and in stiff international competition with companies from 17 countries. Demolition of the five blocks was carried out next to The Central Criminal Court, The Old Bailey, City Thames Link Station and in close proximity

to St Paul’s Cathedral. The confined nature of the site, which was bounded by busy roads, pedestrians and influential neighbours also made this project unique and challenging. “The blocks to be demolished dated back to the 1960s and were from five to 12 storeys,” said Keltbray project manager Mick Kelly. “They were located adjacent to Seacoal House, an existing main high voltage electrical interchange, which supplies electricity to vast areas of London. This meant stringent vibration controls and monitoring regimes. We also worked to tight regulations around noise and dust based on planning and local authority requirements. I’m pleased to say, however, that we completed the contract ahead of schedule, and reached a recycle rate for the project of 98%, including 30,000t of concrete and 4,000t of steel.”

A JCB milestone In the UK the construction equipment manufacturer JCB has marked the production of its 500,000th backhoe loader, a 5CX model, which is the most powerful and productive JCB backhoe and is destined for a customer in Russia. The first JCB backhoe rolled off the production line in Rocester, Staffordshire in 1953. Called the Mark One, it brought the then new wonder of hydraulic power to construction equipment for the first time. In the first full year of production in 1954 just 35 were built and it took more than 20 years for the first 50,000 to be made. Now one JCB backhoe loader rolls off the company’s production lines every three minutes. Despite the maturity of the versatile backhoe loader, it is still one of the biggest selling pieces of construction machinery and is remains the world’s fourth most popular machine in the construction equipment sales league table. JCB chairman Sir Anthony Bamford joined hundreds of employees at the world head quarters to celebrate the milestone.

New Holland Construction’s new wheeled excavator range New Holland has launched its new three model B Series PRO line of wheeled excavators, ranging from 15t to 19t with new easy to operate controls. The B Series PRO use high performance, large displacement FPT engines delivering high torque and power. This performance is matched by a three pump hydraulic system, which maximises swing performance with a dedicated swing pump so that no power is diverted from the other hydraulic functions, resulting in greater efficiency and fast cycles. In addition, the large displacement engine and 3-pump system result in less wear, increasing the machine’s reliability. An automatic power boost kicks in when more power is needed, increasing pressure up to 370 bar.

New diamond segment grinding systems General Equipment Company in the US offers the SG24-2300 series as an extension to its line of Diam-A-Tach diamond segment grinding systems. Designed for a multitude of surface grinding applications, the attachments feature the largest rectangular diamond segments in their class – yet they’re offered at a low price point. The SG24-2300 attachments install easily to popular models of low-speed surface grinders, such as GEC’s SG12 and SG24 series. The 30 to 40 grit diamond segments feature Omnitrix single matrix formulation, which gives them a wider variety of uses than similar competitive products. Popular applications include green concrete, high tensile epoxies, thin film type floor coverings and fully cured concrete. The segments can be operated wet or dry. Other standard items include extra thick segments and directional markings, which aid in proper installation. In addition to the SG24-2300 Diam-A-Tach series, GEC offers the SG24-2100 series, which comes with round segment pins, rather than rectangular segments.

Engine oil changes are extended to 500h and the hydraulic oil change interval is 3,000h. A Cat S.O.S™ fluid-sampling port for hydraulic oil allows accurate, periodic assessment of fluid condition during its life.
For over 20 years in the UK, JPE Holdings has developed its business of supplying aggregates, groundworks and site clearance to become one of the Midland’s leading suppliers to the construction industry. In the winter of 2010, the company invested in a CDE mobile washing plant for operation at their Elford Quarry site in Tamworth, which included an M2500 E3, an A400 Aquacycle Thickener and an Aggmax 150 for feeding, screening, sandwashing and stockpiling. This equipment has enabled the production of a high quality range of fully washed recycled aggregates including sand, 40mm, 20mm and 10mm gravels, all recovered from fully sustainable sources, which are supplied to the local sand and aggregate market. The following winter JPE Aggregates upgraded to the A600 Aquacycle Thickener and recycling hopper. As operations and productivity grew, JPE recently opened a new site at Shire Oak, Walsall, West Midlands. Due to the quality and perceived longevity of this new site, JPE will undertake a move of the existing A600 Aquacycle Thickener and the Aggmax 150. The company will also upgrade the current control panel and install a new M2500 4EX mobile washing plant for the production of two types of washed aggregate and two types of washed sand. The Shire Oak site will accommodate the disposal of inert waste from the local area, allowing construction and demolition companies to avoid landfill tax. With the installation of the new CDE washing plant, they will process the recycling material, creating high quality aggregates for resale to the construction industry.

New Demolition Robots on the market 2013 Despite the persistent across most of the worldwide economy and construction market, the niche market of remote demolition robots continues to break new ground, especially in Europe and North America. In this feature story PDi’s reporter Mikael Karlsson takes a look at the recent news in this field.
The new demolition robot Avant Robot 185 from Finnish Avant Tecno.
The Finnish manufacturer of the remotely controlled demolition robot F16 was acquired by Ylojarvi, Finland-based compact loader manufacturer Avant Tecno Oy in July 2011. “The result of this acquisition is that we will very soon unveil the first model, Avant Robot 185, in our new line of demolition robots,” says Jukka Kytömäki, sales manager for Avant demolition robots. “This will happen at Bauma 2013 in Munich.”

The electric-driven machine can be powered either by a 32A/15kW or 63A/18.5kW motor, allowing flexibility and power when and where its needed. Equipped with telescopic boom, the maximum vertical reach is 5.2m, while horizontal reach is 4.2m. Excluding attachments, the Avant Robot 185 weighs 1,850kg. Unlike traditional robots, all hydraulics and electronics have been placed on the lower carriage, allowing a lower point of gravity that provides safer, more stable working conditions. The robot is easy and flexible to operate with its continuous 360-degree rotation and 460 mm telescopic boom extension. The machine is equipped with reliable Epec computer and user interface, and the remote controls can be used with both radio and cable. When the space is limited, upper carriage can be removed while the tracks can be operated separately, providing transport height as low as 750mm (1.01m with outriggers). Standard transport measurements are 1.5m in height, 795mm in width, and 2.2m in length. The Avant Robot 185 can be fitted with several demolition attachments, such as hydraulic breakers, cutter-crushers, grapples etc. Recommended maximum weight of attach-

Australian market ready to break for Hydrodemolition Hydrodemolition is still a new concept for Australia, and Aquajet’s new distributor Metco believes that is a very positive situation to begin changing conventional methods. Australia is a market that has not yet embraced the concept of hydrodemolition, but with the appointment of the first distributor for Swedish specialist equipment manufacturer Aquajet, local contractors are being presented with the opportunity to see this fast and environmentally friendly concept in action. Metco of Adelaide is convinced that the market has great potential to change its mind quickly. “We believe there is tremendous scope here, and that is why we took on the distributorship,” said Metco managing director Derek Bade. “We specialise in water blasting technology, representing product lines that include Jetstream of Houston, in the US, Terydon, which manufactures accessories, and Stoneage, which manufactures water blast tools. We had seen Aquajet technology at various exhibitions, and about 18 months ago we approached the company. We went to Sweden to see the technology in action and to undergo training, and we have subsequently imported three machines into Australia.” There are only half a dozen other Aquajet machines in Australia, and they are all second
hand brought in independently from overseas projects. “There has been no significant representation here at all for this concept,” said Bade. “The future for Aquajet, and hydrodemolition, really does lie in education. We are therefore following two strategies. One is to hold a trade day, where we shall demonstrate the technology in action. The other is to undertake a number of challenging assignments, where we believe the concept and the technology will really prove themselves.” Metco is importing the Aquajet robotic Aqua Cutter machines. These are track-mounted that use an Intelligent Sensing Control system to send the cutter accurately into demolition areas without the need for a human in-site operator. Metco believes the greatest volume of business will come from its rental division, which is headed by Kevin Ashby. “Although we believe that specialist demolition contractors will eventually form the core of this market, at this particular stage of development we think that the rental sector will be the most active,” said Ashby. Newly arrived in the Metco workshop is an HVD 6000 Aqua Cutter that will be used on Adelaide’s South Road Superway, cutting 2.4 m from the tops of 700 piles installed for
the foundations of the project. The Superway, an A$812M (EUR656M) project, is the biggest single investment in South Australia’s highway system, and the State’s most complex engineering road construction project to date. Construction is being carried out by a joint venture of John Holland, Macmahon Contractors, and Leed Engineering and Construction. “This is the ideal project to show what we can do,” said Ashby. “The piles, when being reduced by conventional jackhammer methods, will need a total of 12 hammer operators working daily, and they would cut between them four piles a day. We can do the job with three people, and complete six piles a day, eight, once we are used to the working pattern. We have fitted a cutting ring to the machine, which was supplied by Aquajet, and which will loop over the heads of the piles. The piles, sunk to a depth of 18m, are 1m in diameter, and have been poured with reinforcing steel bars. They have been sunk in batches of 12, and will be used as a base for the reinforced concrete platforms that will support the bridge trusses.”On another trial, the HVD 6000 has been proving itself on the Adelaide Airport Link Tunnel. “The tunnel is lined with concrete rings with a strength of 70MPa,” said Ashby. “The rings, which were installed in the wake of the tunnelling machine, now have to be scabbled so that they can take the fire-preventive panelling. In trial runs we proved that the Aquajet could undertake this work at the rate of 275m?/h. There are 80,000m2 in
the tunnel the main contractor is very impressed by the work rate and by the quality of what we are doing.” The biggest battle in getting across the message that hydrodemolition saves time and money is that of overcoming a lack of knowledge. “The Australian industry gets young engineers from university, and they don’t know anything about hydrodemolition,” says Ashby. “There will be nothing in the project plan about hydrodemolition, and every plan you look at will be based upon jackhammers. It will have been costed on jackhammers, and no one will even have considered the possibility of hydro, because no one knows about it. Call it a weakness if you like, but we believe that is our strength. We are coming into a new market, where there is almost no competition at all, where no one has yet realised the potential, and we believe that once the concept gains ground, there will be no stopping us.”

777 Group demolishes Typhoon SB200 on the castle council building In the UK demolition and dismantling specialist 777 Group has completed a four-month project in west London, involving the controlled demolition and facade retention of Acton Council Town Hall and Swimming Baths Facility. The building originally housed two swimming baths, which were built in 1904. The imposing Kings Rooms structure, which connected the baths to Acton High Road, was added in 1926 and consisted of facilities including foyer, cloakroom and kitchens. Despite its popularity with the public it was in desperate need of updating and in December 2011 the site was closed and a redevelopment plan initiated. This consisted of integrating a new three floor council amenities centre with the front portion of the original Grade II listed building. The new centre is due to house a 25m long swimming pool, library, gym, and fitness studios.
Delicate project As part of the site’s redevelopment the original structure, housing both swimming baths, had to be demolished and the prominent Kings Rooms building significantly altered internally. A large section of the original Victorian façade, adjacent to the high street, also needed preserving. 777 Group deployed a fleet of demolition equipment to delicately dismantle the antiquated structure housing the two swimming baths, including a 14t excavator 45t high reach machine. A labour force was also mobilised to soft strip doorframes, skirting boards and other furnishings from the Kings Rooms in preparation for the internal redevelopment. A heavy-duty steel frame was constructed around the front portion of the site to preserve the Victorian facade.
the site presented several unique challenges. “A restrictive one way road network around three sides of the building and a busy high street on the fourth side meant managing access to and from the site was critical,” said 777 Group contracts manager David Willcott. “With only one usable access point available to us, delivering machinery and removing demolition waste had to be carefully choreographed to ensure vehicle and pedestrian traffic at the front and sides of the site were not disrupted. Manned access points to the site, coupled with extensive use of scaffolding and fencing, ensured the demolition was carried out in a controlled manner without risk to the public. Water based dust suppression was used throughout the project and the local community engaged and regularly updated with the operation.” Despite the confined site and its restrictive access, 777 Group were able to reclaim several thousand bricks and recycle in excess of 90% of the remaining rubble, wood and scrap metal. With the assistance of 777 Group, the iconic facade of Acton Council’s town hall has been successfully retained whilst the new facility attached to it will offer local residents improved health and fitness facilities.

The EDT EURODIMA customer Leis Betontrennung from Kaufering, Bavaria/Germany, is constantly involved in big projects in Munich, also at the construction project Munich main station. Within this development, the underground stations are remodeled, and new exits to the suburban railway stations, the tramways and the central station are made. The corresponding car parks are being renovated entirely. For increasing capacities, openings for moving stairways and lifts to the top have to be made. There, Leis Betontrennung has contributed a lot, with his qualified cutting pros – they are on site as a team of five – and with the reliable and strong
EDT EURODIMA machines: Up to date, more than 1,800 m? wall saw work was done. The wall saw cuts were accomplished with two high frequency wall saws tornado SB321, the big and powerful ones from the braxx line, and with saw blades equipped with the fast-cutting EURIX30 diamond segments and their arranged diamonds. The wire saw WB12T, being driven by the same control unit as the wall saw in the modular braxx system, has been cutting 450 m? with the blue diamond wire for heavily reinforced concrete. Additionally, the Leis team made 5,000 drillings, where the DURAMANT segments DUK50 with their extremely high tool life, fixed on the drill bits by the SPACE WELDING technology, ensured fast working progress. The concrete drilling and sawing pros from Leis Betonbohrung are highly satisfied with the high-performance machines and the fast-cutting diamond tools from EDT EURODIMA. Only reliable material like that can support the professional user with keeping up with these tight and challenging schedules of big construction sites.

PDi 23
PDi 2012 Concrete Cutting Survey 2012 was a rather bleak year for the international concrete sawing and drilling industry. Or, should we say, another bleak year. After all, this is the third consecutive year that the overall global industry has experienced a decrease. On top of the inherent economic issues associated with prolonged downturns such as this, professional contractors—those who are members of a sawing and drilling association—face some rather complex challenges that makes competing, if not survival, difficult. In these difficult times, customers who buy sawing and drilling services tend to look more at the cost then the quality the contractor provides. To a greater extent, unprofessional and unqualified firms take home the jobs. leaving the professionals sucking their thumbs. To maintain his professionalism, a concrete cutting contractor continuously needs to invest in new machinery, train his personnel, follow new regulations and laws, and pay his duties like tax and insurance.
Competition with different conditions An unprofessional player has a much bigger tendency to cut costs or neglect needed investments in machinery or training—things that would benefit their clients (e.g., more quality work and lower cost). Instead, everyone loses in the long run with this approach. That leaves the professional contractor in a bit of a dilemma. He’s ready to take on any skilled task. He has the equipment, the experience, and the knowledge. The only thing that is lacking is jobs. It becomes, so to speak, competition with different conditions. Being a magazine committed to the advancement of the profession, it is PDi’s duty to recommend that buyers of concrete cutting services use authorized contractors. International umbrella associations like IACDS (Internatonal Association for Concrete Drillers & Sawers) has as its highest goal uniform standards, pricing, methods, and training so that customer knows what he can expect to receive in terms of guarantee for a qualified job when he buys from a authorized contractor. Still, the temptation for a contractor to take the “easy way out,” and limit one’s financial damage during difficult economic times is not always easy to resist. Not matter where you come from or in what region of the world you work, the circumstances and their effects repeat themselves.

Finding a way forward
Fortunately, a professional concrete sawing and drilling contractor usually finds alternative ways to survive before he gives up. Drawing on training, knowledge, and experience, he knows there are many things that can be done even in very difficult times. Indeed, we are seeing more and more contractors trying to diversify their services, giving themselves “more legs to stand on” so to speak. If one gets chopped off, there are three or four others that can keep the wheels rolling. In Europe, for example, light demolition is a growing service among concrete cutters. Handheld equipment and remotely controlled demolition robots allows them to take on interior demolition assignments. Other contractors are getting into concrete floor preparation, removal of hazardous waste, and, in some cases, hydrodemolition. We also see concrete contractors that opt to narrow their range of services. Sometimes, the more specialized you are, the easier it is to get those projects that very few others are fitted for. Often, these types of specialized projects are found in the process or nuclear industry. Look the market table on page XX, which shows market figures for 2011, and compare them to previous years. You’ll find that there has been a remarkable change. The total turnover in concrete sawing and drilling projects has gone down by almost a billion US dollars during that time, while the number of existing and professional firms is more or less the same. But it is mainly the US market that accounts for more than 50 percent of the decrease. Some other markets have actually grown during that time.
New products during 2012 Even though the global concrete cutting market is unstable, our manufacturers have still maintained a rather high pace of new product development and releases. In terms of new diamond tools, several new products have been introduced that follow the general trend of more efficient, faster, with longer life cycle. Various types of systems for positioning the diamonds in the segments and increasing the diamond share are now almost “standard equipment” for most producers. A growing number of domestic diamond tool producers have joined the global manufacturers in offering their own systems. Prices for diamond tools continue to fall and the competition is quite intense. But that’s understandable, as the dramatic growth of the concrete grinding and polishing industry is has spurred much greater use of diamond tools than before. A new generation of grinding and polishing tools has been released throughout the year by companies like HTC, Ashine, Scanmaskin, and General Equipment to name a few. New and upgraded qualities of diamond

tools for coring and sawing were released by Husqvarna, Tyrolit, Hilti, Dr Schulze, Saint Gobain, WideCut, Ehwa, Shinhan, Heger, EDT Eurodima, Terra Diamond, ICS, and several more. WideCut released their new Super wire, Husqvarna Construction Products released their new generation of DiaGrip, which the company began implementing in all their tools several years ago. Husqvarna has also released a new diamond wire technology after years of development. And, Dr Schulze has released their new wire series. In terms of equipment, 2012 has been a bit calmer then usual but still good. That leads to speculation that many producers have focused on developing new products to be released in 2013. After all, it is an important year offering extra good possibilities to promote their products with events such as World of Concrete in Las Vegas and Bauma in Germany. Indeed, because Bauma only happens every three years, the anticipation surrounding the exhibition offers an incredible opportunity to spread the word about new
products quite efficiently. But drill systems didn’t wait for the 2013 exhibition season to begin introducing new systems. Examples include Pentruder, Hilti, Tyrolit, Dr Schulze, Baier, Bosch, Demco, WEKA, and EDT Eurodima. There were also several HF wall sawing systems, as well as a few new wire saws from manufacturers like Husqvarna Construction Products, Dr Schulze, Hilti, Pentruder, the P2 system from Tyrolit, EDT Eurodima, and several others. We have also seen a number of new handheld power cutters to be launched such as models from Stihl, the wet cutting saw K3000 from Husqvarna, and drill hammers and jack hammers from Hilti and Makita. In addition, GPR (Ground Penetration Rader) has become more widely used among concrete cutters outside the US and Australia. Hilti also released a number of smart handheld devices that identify hidden elements in concrete. And we have seen new qualities of diamond chain technology being released by US ICS. Machines for grinding and polishing of concrete floors has come from companies such as HTC, Schwamborn, New Grind, Scanmaskin, Husqvarna Construction Products, Superabrasive, and SPE International to name a few. Dr Fritsch launched new equipment for cold pressing of diamond beads, the BCP 100. Rellok and Lissmac have pushed hard on the wide range of wall saws. Rellok is also strong on road grinding and milling machines, while Husqvarna is still by far number one on flat and road saws for the U.S. market. Tyrolit launched their new compact flat saw model FSD1049***. New floor saws also came from Diacom, Baier and Wacker Neuson. The market have seen dust dust extractors, wet vacs, and air cleaners for concrete sawing, drilling, grinding, and polishing being released from Pullman
Ermator, Ruwac, SILA, Ronda, and a few others. Other more general news during 2012 is that the Russian concrete sawing and drilling association was finally founded during 2012. Scanmaskin opened their own US subsidiary, while Ashine Diamond Tools moved their production to a new factory located south of Xiamen. They also launched their fourth generation of polishing pads in September 2012. Dr Schulze inaugurated their new production plant in Moeckern, Germany. Hydro Tec celebrated their 15-year anniversary. Eibenstock became majority shareholder in Dr Bender. In Sweden the second edition of the popular concrete sawing and drilling exhibition DEMCON was organised, coinciding with the inaugural presentation of the Swedish Demolition Awards. And finally 2012, PDi Magazine went from five issues per year to a bi-monthly publication schedule. So all in all, 2012 turned out to be a rather active year despite a weak market. Let’s hope that 2013 will carry more positive signals about sales and working opportunities for our contractors, even though signals predict that whatever growth there is will be relatively week. ©VOID AB.

With Bauma just four months away, industry players try to keep their latest innovations under tight wraps, anticipating the moment when they can proudly unveil them to the public. No strangers to this pre-show strategy, diamond tooling suppliers, too, tend to keep a low profile. Fortunately for PDi readers, a handful of them have chosen to give the industry a foretaste of things to come. Andrei Bushmarin previews some of the diamond products that will be on display in Munich.
Tooling around before the big show As concrete sawing machinery gets increasingly more powerful, manufacturers of diamond consumables are faced with a task to develop tooling capable of keeping up with the hardware’s enhanced capabilities. This requirement is what now drives tooling producers’ never-ending quest for new processes and technologies. Here is a brief recap of what they have accomplished since the last year.

Heavy-duty control solutions for mobile Machines and vehicles today must offer advantages through productivity, performance, and dependability. They should be efficient and cost-effective in order to achieve full machine potential. Epec Oy from Finland has an advanced control unit solution that helps on the way.
Embedded control units (ECUs) are basic building blocks of machine control systems. Each unit can act as an independent control unit in smaller systems, or as a part in a total control system. They are compact multifunction controllers, and have open I/O interfaces for easy connection with sensors, actuators, joysticks, and other devices from most common manufacturers.
Epec’s total solution In addition, embedded control systems and vehicle computers help define expected machine standards. They increase machine efficiency and productivity by optimizing and constantly monitoring and diagnosing loads, pressures, temperatures, and other functions around the machine, engine, etc. Optimum performance and high output capability can be expected from machines with these intelligent systems, contributing to machine’s full potential, and supporting the overall process performance for effectively carrying out work. Drawing on its vast experience with a variety of control systems for challenging conditions, Epec is able to offer a total solution, from control units to project services and design. A pioneer in the advancement of distributed control system technology for mobile machinery, the Finland-based company helps customers and partners design and manufacture safe, efficient, and environmentally-friendly mobile working machines, which enable machine users to maximize their productivity. Epec’s embedded control systems are based on PLCopen programming and the CANopen® communication protocol, making them easily scalable to meet requirements for both small and large machines. ECUs have open I/O and communication interface, which makes it easier to connect devices from other manufacturers to optimize the whole machine environment both technically and ergonomically. In addition to CANopen®, both SAE J1939 and ISOBUS are also available. The type of each input is determined by the PLCopen application software, allowing for flexible use of the control unit. The control unit is PLCopen programmable, shortening development time for new systems. The CoDeSys programming tool provides an easy graphic environment for developers to work with. Up to four CAN bus interfaces increase the possibilities

of connecting other CAN devices with the control unit. They also provide a communication solution for the control system’s internal communication. With several CAN bus interfaces, these control units are also capable to work as a gateway between different CAN buses. The CANopen® communication protocol provides easy communication with other CANopen® devices. And with the SAE J1939 communication protocol, communication with modern diesel engines and transmissions, etc., is also easy.
Designed for challenging conditions All Epec mobile ECUs can be used in rough terrain and challenging conditions. They easily endure cold, heat, vibration, moisture, and impacts up to 100G. “They do not break”, says managing director Jouni Matikainen. He adds that the devices could probably withstand more pressure, but finding tools for conducting more severe tests is next to impossible. Epec products also meet the IP67 standard for water and dust protection, and are certified for automotive use per e17. They also comply with normal automotive standards for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and environmental conditions. Because the functional design of the control unit casing seldom requires additional proteciton, Epec components are easy to install both in the factory and in the field. Gold-plated, heavy duty AMPSEAL connectors are color-coded and mechanically keyed to fit only the correct, corresponding place. The connector type is specially designed for wire harness use in volume production. Extensive experience and know-how of mobile machines and special vehicles creates the foundation for Epec’s ability to help

Trevi Benne’s Am The Italian company Trevi Benne celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2012. Part of the celebration was an outdoor party at its premises in Noventa Vicentina held over a couple of days in July 2012.
The Cuban dance group a popular element during the anniversary party.
Trevi Benne is a vibrant company, fast developing, always up to something new, listening to its clients and providing the right type of equipment for demolition, recycling and earth moving for its clients. Many are situations where a demolition contractor has asked for a special type of tool for a specific application. Trevi Benne always listens and finds a solution and with time the special tool becomes a standard product for the benefit of other demolition contractors. Trevi Benne is unique in its way of listening and providing. This is perhaps also the reason why the manufacturer has in just 20 years grown from a small local player to one of the big international names in demolition and recycling equipment.
A solid family company
About 1,500 guests were invited including employees and
Tiberio Vaccaro, father of the current owners and siblings, Luca, Lucia and Michela, founded Trevi Benne in 1992. The Vaccaro name is linked to earthmoving attachments when Tiberio and his brother Nerio had started a company back in 1973. However, the two brothers went their separate ways and later Tiberio founded Trevi Benne and the two family brands are now competitors, in earthmoving, demolition and the recycling fields. The brand in Trevi Benne became “3V” after his three children. In the beginning the family business only had six employees. It was located in the village of Agugliaro about 3km from the current location. The 900m2 production plant stood on a 2,700m2 property. At the beginning the Italian market was dominant and they had only a few foreign clients in Austria and Germany. In 1999 Trevi Benne moved to the current
their families, Italian and foreign clients, suppliers, distributors from all over the world and representatives from the press and friends. The planning of the anniversary party started in May 2012 and organising the catering for guests was quite a challenge. A large group of chefs and helpers were hired and a 10m by 40m marquee was erected to accommodate 450 people. A beach volleyball court was rented as well as an inflatable slide. A bar was also set up for guests partying until 04.00am. A disc jockey played music around the clock and a Cuban group of dancers entertained in the evening. Typical Italian food was served along with a copious amount of Prosecco. To close a giant cake with the 20th anniversary logo was served along with amazing fireworks.
location in Noventa Vicentina. The new office for production, commercial and administrational tasks measured about 3,000m2 on a 12,000m2 plot. But in 2007 it was decided that the production, product development, technical office and the spare parts warehouse, logistics and shipping department needed more space and these activities were moved to new 6,000m2 premises near by on a 17.000m2 plot. The business has changed quite a lot for Trevi Benne during the past 20 years, moving from a small local family firm to a quite large industrial company with about 80% of its production exported with a brand that is well known all over the world. There are now about 65 employees making Trevi Benne one of the bigger factories in Noventa Vicentina.

mazing Journey Strong market exposure
Trevi Benne has always been strong in marketing their products as well as designing their products. Marketing manager Christian Tadiotto has played a major role in the company’s success. “I have worked for Trevi Benne since 1996 and was hired because I was trained in sales and marketing and also because at that time I was the only one in the company that spoke English”, said Tadiotto, who previously worked in the company’s sales department. The design work and product testing is done in-house. Suppliers in the area around Noventa Vicentina produce the different components. Trevi Benne does the assembly, painting and delivery.
The client approach In the early days Trevi Benne mainly produced products for

the earth moving market, like standard and customized buckets for excavators, quick coupling systems and special applications for earth moving machines. “In 1993 we were awarded at the Samoter fair in Verona for our Self-Locking Quick Coupler System. This was actually our first appearance in a fair ever”, said Tadiotto. “The year after we produced our first hydraulic pulveriser and our first screening bucket.” Demolition and recycling equipment has been a major focus in Trevi Benne almost from the start due to a request from a client. “The client had a special need for a project and we did what we have done since then. Solved the problem for the client,” said Tadiotto. “This is our way of working. We dive deeply into a project, study what the client’s needs are. Question, brain storm, bring up several different solution until we finally agree on one ultimate solution,” said Tadiotto. “And we give all clients the same attention, no matter the size.” But what is Trevi Benne’s speciality in demolition and recycling attachments? “A little bit what I just said, which is to give all clients the same attention first of all. And to give them a product solution that increases their efficiency and production, that is important. Our solutions are often dedicated and specialised to each client’s single need. From the first model in 1994 we have created 15 different series of demolition and recycling attachments and 102 different model sizes. Since the start of the company we have up produced 6,300 demolition and recycling attachments,” said Tadiotto.
The product programme Since 1992 Trevi Benne has been manufacturing and selling technology and equipment for construction machinery in three main product lines. First the earth moving line in 1992 and since 1994 the demolition recycling line. Since a year back Trevi Benne also started a line of attachments for the forestry industry. The earth moving line contains buckets for excavators and loaders, quick coupling system and special applications for medium and large equipment. Custom fit buckets are available on request, with increased thickness, employing wear resistant materials for heavy duties and precision jobs. The demolition and recycling
lines contain equipment for demolition, handling and recycling, like crushers, pulverisers, steel shears, screening and crushing buckets for environmental restoration. The forestry line has two types of equipment for cutting and size reduction of logs, trees and maintenance of bushes. Trevi Benne will give a lot of attention to this sector in 2013 like attending fairs, organising demonstrations and training days. There are 15 different product series and all together 102 models in total. Ranging from the smallest crusher, HC 02 that weighs 250kg, to the biggest FR 250, that weights 24.6t.
Markets Trevi Benne exports about 80% production, mostly in Europe and the company has distributors in each of the European countries. “We have a very strong network of excellent dealers giving exclusive sales and marketing support as well as back office, after sales, service and spare parts service support,” said Tadiotto. Trevi Benne is now pushing hard and gaining market shares in South America, North and Central Africa, Russia and Australia. The US has not developed in the direction Trevi Benne hoped for. “We would like to have better results in the US market. We have been investing in this market since Conexpo 2008, but we have not received the results we were hoping for. But we have not given up hope. The US market has a huge potential,” said Tadiotto. The domestic Italian market is very calm right now. There are very few new projects and therefore no request for new equipment. It is also hard to get paid from the clients and banks are very reluctant to lend. There are a quite a few demolition and recycling equipment competitors, not only in Italy but also from all corners of the world. Trevi Benne is competing with the professional ones, but there are many low price brands too. “The low budget and unprofessional players we can not do much about. But the professional ones I believe the quality level of our products is similar. There are a lot of good brands with high quality like Trevi Benne. What we can compete with and become better at is delivery, after market and spare part services. Developing new types of

attachments that do the job better and faster is also something that we always have focused on and will continue to do so. All professional players in this field also have the responsibility to protect our industry from those suppliers who want to break it up,” said Tadiotto. In 2011 Trevi Benne had a turnover of about

Serious hole drilling i UK In the UK D-Drill, based in Wigan, was called into create large diameter holes into a combined sewer overflow chamber shaft wall of detention tanks at a waterworks in Preston, Lancashire. The firm landed the deal to drill holes into the 500mm thick reinforced concrete shaft with the main contractor for the scheme. The two 2.1m diameter holes were completed over a three day period. D-Drill used stitch drilling and wire line sawing to create the holes to leave clean cut edges to minimise noise, vibration and dust. The operators also had to undertake working at height and confined spaces training for the project. “We were delighted to win this work because of our specialist knowledge in this sector and it was extremely satisfying to complete the job on time and on budget, as the contract was on a very tight schedule,” said D-Drill North West office area manager Neil Wood. “We are highly-skilled in this type of work and have a very good working relationship with the client, which will hopefully stand us in good stead for future work. The recession, as everyone knows, has been tough on the construction industry, but our specialist knowledge and skills have meant we have been able to grow in the North West and, indeed, across the UK in difficult times. Contracts such as this have helped us to do that and that is why it is so important to deliver for the client time after time.”

Furukawa. Atlas Copco launched a brand new hammer series exclusively for the Asian market. Atlas Copco general manager in China, Tierry Leder was enthusiastic about the show. He said that there was considerable interest in the role of the new hammers. Atlas Copco today has 20 factories in China. There are many companies in China also starting to emerge in the recycling of demolition debris, rock crushing and sieving to compete with international manufacturers, such as Metso, Sandvik, Atlas Copco, Kleemann, Rockster Recycler, Rubble Master and Keestrack. There was also a lot of crushing buckets at the show, but most came from manufacturers in the Western world such as Allu, Remu and MB.

What makes the Bauma China easier to overview as a visitor is that the 17 exhibition halls surround the outdoor area. It is fairly easy to navigate between the different areas and booths. Most visitors at the fair where from China, but there was also a strong presence from Russia, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, Thailand, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Turkey.
Demolition and Recycling Husqvarna is very strong on handheld cutters in China.
Bauma China was once again a success and well above expectations. The industry expected a setback when the Chinese market declined over the past year. For 2013 analysts expect a weak recovery.
Tools and carriers for demolition were well represented. There was a large number of manufacturers of hydraulic breakers, most from China. There were also international manufacturers present, such as Atlas Copco, Sandvik and
Demolition equipment that we know as the best in Sweden, are remotely controlled demolition robots. Both Brokk and Husqvarna took part of the exhibition. Husqvarna had a large booth where they showed much of its range. The chief executive officer of Husqvarna’s operations in China Marc Segers, said that the company is very strong in the segment of handhold cutters. It is primarily in the customer segments rescue and railway industry. “But we see a clear increase in the demolition and drilling as well. Diamond tools are very competitive and we are fighting against many smaller diamond tool manufacturers. But with our effective methods and concepts we will be capable to increase our success as the industry grows, “said Marc Segers. Interest in Husqvarna demolition robots was great among the Chinese. Husqvarna marketing and sales manager Lawrence Liu said 10 years ago, that the market for demolition and drilling was troublesome. Many businesses were run by one person and much was made by hand. Demolition tools were largely picks and shovels and the occasional excavator coupled with very cheap labour. “Today the map is being redrawn,” said Liu. “With the construction we are experiencing today in China the need of sophisticated and effective methods for both demolition and concrete cutting is growing. Many small firms are left, but the emergence of a more professional group of companies in the demolition and punching are seeking
Strong growth Bauma China 2012 is on its way to overtake the original Bauma in Germany. This year 2,718 companies from 38 countries took part, an increase of 46%. The last Bauma in Munich had 3,300 exhibitors. About 180,000 visitors over the four days of the fair from 27 to 30 November was an increase of 16%. Exhibition space at the Shanghai Exhibition Centre was 300,000m2 , an increase of 30% compared to the previous show in 2010. The show has now reached capacity and will difficult to expand in the densely populated area in Shanghai’s Pu Dong district. The first Bauma China was held in 2002 and there were not as many Chinese manufactures then as there are now. The 1,837 Chinese manufacturers in all product sectors at this year’s event are impressive. The international participants have also increased. There were 172 exhibitors from Germany, 122 from Italy, 116 from the US and

Unlike Bauma in Germany, Bauma China does not have is a strong representation of exhibitors in diamond tools and equipment for concrete sawing and drilling. Those sectors were represented, but many of the major Western and Asian companies were not represented, such as Hilti, Tyrolit, Ehwa, Shinhan, Bosun and WideCut. Ashine Diamond Tools and Skystone were present, also the German manufacturers Dr. Schulze and Gölz among others. There was a fairly large number of Chinese diamond tool manufacturers. This signals that many manufacturers con-
tinue to believe the Chinese market as relatively difficult to understand. It also requires a comprehensive approach, which also requires financial muscle. Many companies choose to locate their production in China, with exports to all other markets in Asia and elsewhere. Chinese manufacturer Ashine Diamond Tools in Xiamen is a good example. More than 90% of the production of diamond tools for grinding and polishing concrete floors is exported. It is only this year they hired a salesman for the domestic market and the company has been around since the early 1990’s. Ashine owner Richard Deng says that China has a huge potential for grinding concrete floors. But for many years, no one understood why there was need to grind concrete floors, when they could be painted. “It’s clearly maturing both in terms of aesthetics and environmental awareness,” said Deng. “Slowly, but surely it is starting to turn round. OF WIRES
There is one word ‘passion’ to describe the company WideCut and its owner John Han. He has worked his whole life developing diamond tools and most of all professional diamond wires. “The strive to improve the cutting speed more and more is essential, but above that stands safety,” said John Han.
That nothing is done by coincidence is rather obvious around WideCut. Even the new plant and office is a meticulous masterpiece that instantly reflects on what the company is dealing with. The spacious and futuristic three floors and 1500 m2 large plant breeds professional diamond wire manufacturing. And that is what WideCut does, exclusively, with 100% of the production exported. Biggest foreign market is Japan with about a 35% share, followed by Europe with 30%. About 10% of the production is sold to the US, 15% to Asia and a remaining 10%
to other areas of the world. WideCut has two main product sectors, diamond wire for concrete and diamond wire for stone. Wire for concrete dominates completely with approximately 90%. Annually about 60,000m of diamond wire is produced at the factory and at this stage only about 25% of the factory’s capacity is used. The current annual sales are US$4M(EUR3M) with 18 employees.
A solid background in diamond tools John Han is calm and humble. Not a man of big headlines
and has a vision and a passion carved in stone. He knows what he is doing, where he stands and where he wants to go. He is from the very south of South Korea and graduated with a major in Metal Engineering at a University in Korea. In 1985 he joined the Korean diamond tool manufacturer EHWA Diamond with his professor’s recommendation. He made quite a career at EHWA and became the head of its research and development department. His main task was to develop and produce the first diamond wire in Korea. In 1996 Han was sent to EHWA’s US

subsidiary, General Tool in California. His task was to set up a professional diamond tool production line. When his mission was completed he decided to embrace his long time dream and establish his own company. As diamonds were his passion he was convinced that diamond tools were a promising product. But at that time he felt that diamond wire needed more research. Diamond wire had, at that time, unstable quality, so his aim was to develop his own and started WideCut in 1998 focusing solely on diamond wire. That is why the company’s slogan since then has been ‘Only Wire’.
One man company
John Han has developed and built most of the automated manufacturing machines himself. This particular machine thread the beads automatically on the wire.
It was a small-scale business at that time. Han was founder, owner and the only employee in a 200m2 office, research laboratory and production. But the timing could have been better. His start his business when Asia experienced a severe economic crises. “It was a difficult time, indeed. But what was driving me was the fact that I did what I loved to do and I have always liked challenges and in particular this type, to develop the perfect wire,” said Han. For the production he had bought a few used machines to start with. A situation that is completely different today. With the first production line set and a first range of products, Han started attending shows in Europe and US. By showing his products at exhibitions the number of clients increased slowly as well as the company. This was in 2001, the same year as WideCut’s production manager Dong-Won Shin started to work for the company. Shin is still with the company and is now the key manager at WideCut and takes Han’s place when he is not in the office.
The golden period
Machinery bead setting are also developed by Han.
Progress continued and in 2004 the company moved to new premises. This was the beginning of the golden period for WideCut. The company established a good relationship with a partner company in Japan and in a few years Japan became the most important market for WideCut. Along with Japan WideCut’s export business

grew significantly to other markets like EU, East Europe, South Africa and Americas. In 2011 it took another important step. The production speed needed increasing to prepare for mass production. Han worked on a new larger production facility and built his 1500 m2 factory from scratch. Production was moved into the new factory in 1 July, 2011. At this stage WideCut began the process of a fully family run company. Han’s first daughter Shelly got involved in the business and is marketing manager. Helen, his second daughter is majoring in business and financing and the plan is for her to join during 2013. Han’s third child, his son Steve Han still has some more years of studying but will join when he is finished with his education.
Purely export Since the start of the company the focus has been on export. Not one single metre of diamond wire is sold in Korea. “Korea is a small country with a large number of diamond tool manufacturers, actually some of the biggest in the world are Koreans,” said Han. “For us to compete with them we would have needed a huge domestic sales force and a very strong brand name right from the start. For us it was much easier to focus overseas. And that is what we did and still do.” WideCut’s products are sold either directly from the factory in Korea, if we don’t have a distributor on that market, or through their current 30 distributors around the world. Han has been working intensively with diamond wire development and production for so long he is a specialist in this field. “In the beginning this industry knew very little about the potential of diamond wires, how they should be designed and how to produced them. There were also no specialised production machinery before,” says Han. The deeper Han delved in to development of diamond wire the clearer it became that this was the business for him. Cutting with diamond wire is often the most efficient and environmentally friendly method. But the design of the wire is important in order not to cause it to

break. A broken wire could easily be a deadly weapon for the operator or the surroundings. “A bead on the loose is like a bullet and can penetrate almost anything. It has a speed of 22m/s,” said Han. As there were almost no suppliers of machinery for making diamond wire he decided to start developing his own fully automatic production machinery. Today almost all machinery in the factory is WideCut and designed by Han. For instance WideCut has 12 different bead process machines, depending on what type of bead is to be produced. The beads has a very high concentration of diamonds. A chain is as strong as its weakest point and it is the same with a diamond wire. If the diamond bead starts spinning the risk is high that beads start flying around if the wire brakes. That is why all beads are pre-pressed on the wire at WideCut. On a 50m long wire there are about 2000 beads. The rubber that holds the beads on the wire is a key factor for WideCut. The rubber does not only prevent the wire from breaking, it also holds the beads and springs in place in case of breakage. The type and composition of the rubber is special and how it has been adapted is the secret of its success. WideCut calls it ‘Black Rubber’ and it is developed in close co-operation with a local rubber supplier. But also each diamond bead and spring is checked thoroughly at WideCut before an automised machine attaches the components on to the wire. “This is one of many secrets that we cherish deeply. Each of our production methods and the custom made machinery are patented and we are very careful with letting outsiders enter our factory,” says Han. WideCut currently manufacturers 60,000m of wire per year. About 80% of the production is sintered diamond wire used mainly for cutting reinforced concrete. The remainder is electroplated wire used for cutting metal. The manufacturing process for electroplated wire is totaly different from sinter wire and it has a very high concentration of diamond. Han believes that the market for electroplated wire will increase due to the ongoing dismantling of the nuclear industry around the world. In the process industry the use of diamond wires as a demolition method is very

common and will grow even more in the near future. Thanks to the fully automated manufacturing process wire can be delivered extremely fast from WideCut. They always has about 4,000m in stock, and enough to cover the demand for one month. Before delivery all wires are pre-sharpened automatically in two stages. There is even machinery, developed by WideCut, that blows away the dust from the wire after the sharpening. Some years ago any diamond wire producer pre-sharpened their products. About 70% of the production from WideCut is standard wire and the remainder is for special application. To stay on top of product development and production efficiency is a necessity as competition is fierce. Han says that in three years the price of diamond wire has decreased 30% and at the same time WideCut has increased the performance of their products by 30%. But Han with his family and company has found the formula to stay at the cutting edge of the competition providing his clients with first class diamond wires.

Chinas Brightest S Richard Deng founder and owner of the Chinese diamond tool manufacturer Ashine Diamond Tools represents a young and modern entrepreneurial style in China. He has a strong personal drive with one clear focus in making his company world leader in tools for grinding and polishing concrete floors.
The Ashine Diamond Tools factory is located in Tuzai one and half hours drive from the city of Xiamen. Ashine’s head office and administration is located in Xiamen city. The area around Xiamen is China’s biggest stone processing district with thousands of small stone processing shops side by side and so it has been for a thousand years. There are also about a hundred diamond tool manufacturers in the area. There are also many other industries related in some way to stone and concrete processing machinery.
The opening of China Richard Deng was born in the city of Chongqing, far away from Xiamen. But he came to this area to take his bachelor’s degree in semi conductors in XIAMEN university, and he got his master’s degree in diamond technology In SICHUAN university. Richard is just like any western company leader, determined to put his company Ashine on the international arena. He says that China’s development since the 1990s is was very much thanks to the former Prime Minister Deng Xiaoping as he made it possible for the country to open up to the world. “The regime encouraged people to set up their own businesses starting at the end of the 1980s and beginning of the 1990s. I was one of them that welcomed this new strategy and started my company in 1993,” said Deng. But the competition was devastating. So many private companies started during this period and particularly in the stone district around Xiamen. Some of the competing names like Bosun and Antai grew very fast and quickly dominated the domestic market. Deng and his company had only a few employees at the beginning. The product range started with traditional diamond tools for mainly stone processing. But it was not only competition that was hard it was also difficult to get paid by clients. “It Richard Deng is a real Chinese entrepreneur and found a strong business in diamond tools for concrete grinding and polishing when competitions was too strong in traditional concrete sawing and drilling tools.

could take ages to get paid and no one could survive that way,” says Deng. In 1995 Deng started to look for the possibilities to export and forget the difficult domestic market. He got one client in Germany asking for diamond cup wheels for grinding of concrete. That was the start for Ashine to become a supplier of grinding and polishing tools for concrete floors and the German company has been Ashine’s client ever since. Ashine continued to develop and make traditional diamond tools for some years even though grinding and polishing tools slowly became a bigger and bigger export sector. But about seven years ago Ashine left manufacturing of traditional diamond tools and focused entirely on floor grinding and polishing tools. Production lies in surface preparation tools, concrete grinding and concrete floor polishing. The company has recently released its fourth generation of polishing tools September 2012. Deng and his company had a very strong advantage. As he has a very solid education in the area he is working he also has a strong network in the university and science sector. Almost since the start of the company Deng has had a close co-operation with his old university in Xiamen and today Ashine is co-operating with three Chinese universities. “Developing polishing pads in particular and creating the typical resin is a very special technology and need years’ of development just to make a new generation. We have a very strong internal research department, but the close bond with our universities is very important for our production,” said Deng. Ashine is also a sponsor of the universities and several students have worked with Ashine after graduation.
Strong foreign market In 2013 Ashine will celebrate its 20th anniversary, but during the last 10 years it has created a foothold in the diamond grinding

and polishing industry. Ashine has become a well-known brand all over the world, but is mainly working with OEM production. The strongest market for Ashine is USA. When it comes to polishing of concrete floors the US is also the most mature market and the technique has been used since end of the 1990s. About 40% of Ashine’s production is exported to Europe and the majority of the tools are delivered to Germany. Another 30% goes to the US, which is the single biggest market. Australia stands for another 10% and Japan 10% and the remaining 10% is sent to South America, South Africa and others. “We have seen a great trend in the US. Grinding and polishing of concrete floors is incredibly popular and now almost all supermarkets want to polish their concrete floors, which has given us a great upturn,” said Deng. In the US Deng considers Superabrasive their biggest competitor in diamond tools. Deng thinks that most of their tools are made in Bulgaria and shipped to the US. “I am surprised they are so strong in the US, but we see so little of them in Europe, considering they have the production in Bulgaria,” said Deng. “I am convinced that we can offer a more sophisticated technology then most of our competitors, in particular Superabrasive. We are determined to be the biggest player in this field in four years. That is our long-term plan. Just wait and see. Many think that we should be inexpensive, just because we are Chinese. Workers at Ashine have around three times the minimum salary and more. In China electricity is cheaper in the evening that is why machines are running mostly in the evening and any handwork that does not need that much electricity is done during the day. Innovations and upgrades keep compact and skid loaders packed with attractive features. PDi’s Jim Parsons reports
Compact and skid loaders may be thought of as a mainly North American phenomenon, but demand for these small, yet versatile machines appears to be growing around the world. Improvements in engine performance and lifting capacity makes it possible for a smaller loader to do the same amount of work that once required a larger, less efficient, yet more fuel-thirsty counterpart. And it is the rare contractor who does not aspire to get more for less from their equipment.
Upgraded for Tier 4 More power in smaller packages is not the only driving trend for loader and skid steer innovation. Several manufacturers have upgraded their engines to comply with the US Environmental Protection Agency’s interim Tier 4 diesel emissions standards. They have produced machines that generate high levels of performance with lower amounts of pollution, improving the health and productivity of both the jobsite and the surrounding environment. The final Tier 4 standards are scheduled for implementation
in 2014-15, completing a staged 18-year effort to reduce nitrogen oxide and particulate matter emissions from diesel exhaust by 99 percent compared with 1996 levels. Another recurring theme is operator comfort, as shown by the expanded range of standard and optional creature comforts available for the machines’ cabs. Far from trifling luxuries, these improvements will go a long way toward improving operators’ overall health and alertness, improving worksite safety and productivity. Better, cleaner, safer are qualities that should appeal to all contractors.
Bobcat launches new mid-size loaders and skid steers Bobcat has introduced the seven-model line of 500 frame size compact track loaders and medium size skid steer loaders, providing operators with extensive feature upgrades, including increased visibility, a more comfortable cab and easier serviceability to maximize jobsite efficiency. New machines include the T550 and T590 compact track loaders, and the S510, S530, S550, S570, and S590 skid-steer loaders. The new line replaces current K-Series models, S150, S160, S175, S185, S205, T180 and T190. The S510, S550 and T550 feature a radius lift path,
50 PDi • Issue 6 • December 2012 - January 2013
providing operators the reach and visibility they require for dumping over a wall, backfilling or loading flatbed trucks. The S530, S570, S590 and T590 models feature a vertical lift path, providing operators the ability to lift heavier loads higher, making it easier to clear high-sided truck boxes and hoppers, as well as placing pallets loaded with heavy material. All 500 frame size loaders boast a unique cab forward design that not only gives the machines a different look, but also moves the operator closer to the attachment and provides unmatched visibility in all directions. As comfortable operators are more productive, Bobcat increased the size of the 500 frame loader cab by 10%, redesigned the interior to allow operators to adjust the environment to their individual preferences, and improved cab pressurisation, thanks to a new one piece seal that goes all the way around the door. This minimises the amount of dirt and dust that might enter the cab, creating more enjoyable working conditions and making interior cleaning easier. Cab height has also been increased, providing additional headroom, while still keeping the overall machine size small enough to operate in tight spaces. The new loaders provide the largest cab door opening on the market, offering superior visibility to the cutting edge of the bucket or the corners of an attachment. The cab door threshold has been lowered and the overall surface of the door has increased more than 40% to improve visibility, and make it easier for operators to enter and exit the cab. Larger windows on the sides and rear of the cab pro-
vide more visibility to the tyres and back of the machine. The larger top window makes it easier and more comfortable for the operator to see an attachment with the lift arms raised, an advantage when loading trucks or performing other tasks. Operators have the choice between standard foot pedal hydraulic controls, and the optional advanced control system or selectable joystick controls. The standard foot pedals control the lift and tilt through mechanical linkage, while the ACS uses a dash mounted switch to instantly select between advanced hand control and advanced foot control of lift and tilt functions. The control levers of the SJC system can be operated in the ISO or H pattern. These handles move up and down in conjunction with the seat to reduce arm movement and operator fatigue. The joystick mounts also slide forward or backward to adjust to the preference of each individual operator. Keeping the loaders cool when working long hours is important in prolonging the service life of the machine, which is why Bobcat designed the cooling system on the 500 frame loaders for increased efficiency and higher performance. The new design also makes it easier to clean the cooling system. An oil cooler swings up, allowing the operator to clean the area between the oil cooler and the radiator. The 500 frame loaders will have increased hydraulic performance over their K-Series equivalents, enabling them to accomplish more work. Auxiliary hydraulic quick couplers are mounted directly to the front plate of the lift arm to provide a solid mounting, and hoses are routed through the loader arms for better protection. A guard bar extends in front of the coupler for added security, and a steel tailgate prevents items from penetrating the engine compartment. The skid-steer models offer a two-speed option that boosts the maximum travel speed from 12km/h in low range to 17.7km/h in high range. The hydraulic bucket positioning option keeps the loader bucket level as the lift arms travel upward, enabling operators to spill less and work faster. Bobcat upgrades 700 and 800 M-Series loader performance, monitoring and emissions controls Bobcat has also made significant upgrades to its 700 and 800 frame size skid steer loaders, compact track loaders and all wheel steer loader. These changes incorporate greater machine performance through enhancements, such as increased breakout and lift forces, better horsepower management, shorter cycle times and simplified display navigation. Machines in this horsepower class include Bobcat’s 700 and 800 frame size loaders, consisting of seven M-Series loaders, which are the S750, S770, and S850 skid steer loaders, the A770 all wheel steer loader and the T750, T770 and T870 compact track loaders. Bobcat has also continued to take steps toward complying with US Environmental Protection Agency diesel engine emissions standards while also improving machine performance. Upgraded loader features apply key iT4 technologies to provide enhanced loader functionality for machines ranging from 55kW to 127kW.
With the capabilities of the iT4 electronic technologies, engine speed recovery is faster as the engine transitions between torque and horsepower demands. This provides operators with shorter cycle times and improved productivity for attachment tasks, such as excavating, grading or lifting materials. The S850 and T870 have been equipped with increased hydraulic pressures and breakout and lift forces, resulting in shortened digging cycles. The increased lift and tilt forces on the S850 and T870 will improve machine efficiency in lifting and rolling back to the carry position with less machine effort. For example, the iT4-equipped T870 has nearly 17% more lift breakout force than the Tier 3 model. The new iT4 engines can interpret information that will allow horsepower management, a standard feature of Bobcat selectable joystick controls, to be based on engine torque instead of engine speed. This minimises engine stalling and provides additional travel speed at low to mid engine speed. As with all iT4 emissions controls technologies only ultra low sulphur diesel fuel may be used in iT4 compliant 700 and 800 frame size loaders. Sulphur is a significant contributor to pollutants that exist in diesel engine exhaust, and iT4 engines are dependent on ULSD, which has significantly less sulphur compared with prior diesel fuels. Sulphur amounts that exceed those contained in ULSD will damage or ruin key exhaust system components. An optional auto idle function is available for Bobcat loaders equipped with SJC. Auto idle allows for quieter overall operation and reduced fuel consumption. This feature automatically activates, causing the engine speed to drop to idle if a loader’s functions are not used within five seconds. With the optional deluxe instrument panel, operators can set a preferred activation time between four and 240s. A new hydraulic control valve allows use of the tilt function regardless of auxiliary system pressure. This change makes it easier to operate attachments, such as planers, wheel saws, grapples and tillers. All deluxe instrument panels in M-Series loaders, including 600 frame size loaders unaffected by iT4, will provide simplified navigation and more in depth information regarding operator and machine performance. Operators can set three different drive response modes and select them with simple push button controls in the left panel information area. Bobcat M series loaders also feature 125mm fullcolour LCD screen with a display that provides information, such as real time fuel consumption and emissions data. A simplified panel viewed by all users, includes simple universal icons such as home screen button. Another machine performance panel allows owner level individuals to monitor user login information, overall job statistics and user job statistics. This data will help determine productivity rates by operators and other project metrics.
Doosan DL200, DL220 wheel loaders provide increased horsepower and performance Doosan’s upgraded interim iT4 compliant DL200 and DL220 wheel loaders offer increased horsepower and performance improvements that enhance their capabilities for moving materials in highway, street and paving projects, as well as building, site development and livestock production applications. Relaunched as an 118kW iT4 wheel loader, the 2m3 DL200 is engineered with a breakout force of 30,140Nm, a full turn tipping capacity of 7.76t, and a dump height of 2.9m. For additional dumping capabilities, the DL200 is also available in a high lift configuration, extending the dump height above the standard DL250, to 3.3m. The 3m3 DL220 has been re-engineered as an 118kW iT4 wheel loader. It has a breakout force of 32,065Nm, a full turn tipping capacity of 8.38t and a 2.8m dump height. Both Doosan wheel loaders are equipped with sixcylinder diesel engines for use with a cooled exhaust gas recirculation system, a diesel oxidation catalyst, and a diesel particulate filter. The turbocharged engines feature a highpressure common rail design with direct fuel injection, electronic control, and four valves per cylinder. This wheel loader’s new auto idle feature provides additional noise reduction and fuel savings by reducing the working idle of the wheel loader from 950res/min to a standby idle setting of 750revs/min, when the machine is inactive for a short period of time. Designed with improved lifting performance, the DL200 and DL220 allow operators to set upper and lower limits for both the lift arm and bucket stop positions from inside the cab. Better lifting capabilities improve cycle times in digging and loading applications, while providing better control of the lift arm and bucket positions. An optional fourth spool control valve provides the capability to utilise attachments that require an additional hydraulic function, such as snow blowers and snow blades. To maintain optimum performance in dirty and dusty conditions, the DL200 and DL220 incorporate a new automatic reversing cooling fan. In each cycle, the fan runs in reverse for a few minutes to clean the cooling system, resulting in longer working hours and shorter maintenance time to clean the cooling system. The operator can select to reverse the fan by a switch, or it can be set to automatically reverse on a preset time. Operators can also expect upgraded driving performance options. As an alternative to the standard limited slip differential, the DL200 and DL220 offer an optional hydraulic locking front differential. Based on ground conditions, the operator can choose to lock the differential manually with a floor mounted foot switch, or allow the machine to automatically engage the system. This provides increased driving power when one wheel spins or loses traction and improves machine performance when navigating tough terrain.

The engine increases the efficiency of fuel delivery through increased pressure. This allows the injector to inject a finer mist into the engine, producing a more efficient combustion that, in turn, produces more torque and improved fuel economy, less noise, lower operating costs and cleaner exhaust. Service intervals on the front lift arm pins have increased from 50h to 250h. Tilt cylinder hydraulic hoses have been rerouted for improved hose reliability, better hose movement, and improved visibility to the attachment. Interior cabin improvements also include a number of multi function display panel upgrades on a centralised monitor that gives the operator machine system information, such as engine speed, coolant temperature, fuel level, machine warnings, time, and the selected gear. Lowered front side glass improves visibility, and a new door threshold makes cab access and inside cleaning much easier. As with every new Doosan machine, the DL200 and DL220 are covered by a 48h parts guarantee. Should a machine debilitating part be needed, Doosan will deliver it directly to the end user within two business days, or else pay for a replacement machine rental. The guarantee is subject to carrier delivery restrictions and/or governmental agency delays.
JCB’s Skid Steer & Compact Tracked Loaders JCB offers a line of 17 new generation skid steer and compact track loaders for the global market. The machines are 16% more fuel efficient than rival models and will save customers around €2,000 annually. The new machines include nine large platform models, which are the 225, 260, 280, 300 and 330 wheeled skid steers, and the 225T, 260T, 300T and 320T track loaders. Models 260 and up use a vertical lift version of the JCB Powerboom single arm, providing maximum reach at full height, while the 225 and 225T are radial lift and provide maximum reach at the middle point of the lifting path.
JCB’s product range also includes the eight small platform models, 175, 190, 205 skid steers, and the 190T and 205T compact track loaders, which are vertical lift machines. They are complemented by the 135, 155, and 150T models, which feature a radial lift design. Because the JCB vertical lift models do not require a torque tube across the back of the machine, operators have an unobstructed rear view and nearly 360? visibility. To further enhance visibility JCB has replaced the mesh screen around the cab with laminated glass. As in previous models, the new generation skid steers and track loaders feature a unique left side entry door that allows the operator to enter and exit the machine clear of the attachment and loader arm. With O-ring face seal hydraulic fittings and a simplified design, resulting in 38% fewer parts, JCB’s new machines are even easier to service. A new tilting cab design gives improved access to the machine’s power train and hydraulic components. A large rear service door provides easy access to the engine and daily checkpoints, and a tilting cooling pack improves engine access. The new machines have a larger entry door and a 17% larger cab than previous models. JCB has also introduced multifunction joystick controls and an optional heated air suspension seat with adjustable armrests. Redesigned control panels have been relocated from the lower console to the panels at the top of the cab to be within the operator’s line of sight. Other available cab comforts include cup holders, MP3 player compartment with charging outlet and auxiliary plug, optional stereo package, and optional smooth ride system. Operators will also enjoy a quieter cab with noise levels at a very low 76dBa, an 85% improvement. Switching to any of the machine’s 31 attachment families is a snap, thanks to a standard universal mechanical

New for Europe: Volvo C-Series Skid Steer Loaders Intermat 2012 saw the European debut of Volvo’s newest skid steer loaders the MC60C, MC70C, MC95C, and MC115C. Rated operating capacities for these models range from 610kg to 1.18t and gross engine power from 36kW to 55kW. The three tracked models MCT85C, MCT125C and MCT145C were also launched to customers in Europe. Rated operating capacities range from 860kg to 1.45t and gross engine power from 49kW to 69kW. Featuring a unique single loader arm design, Volvo wheeled and tracked skid steer loaders deliver superior loading performance and durability compared with traditional skid steer designs, along with the improved visibility, safety, and enhanced cab access. The loader arm provides strength and reliability, and effectively distributes the load over the single loader arm. The absence of a horizontal cross member found on two arm vertical lift machines gives operators all around, visibility. The cab also features a large top window for improved visibility during truck loading. Due to the single loader tower arm design, cab access is easier and safer. Operators enter and exit the cab through a large opening side cab door. This eliminates the need for operators to climb onto and over the bucket or attachment. On both wheeled and tracked machines, a non-slip step increases safe entry and exit of the cab. Side entry also eliminates the uncomfortable body turn required of operators in order to sit down in traditional skid steer loader cab designs. Using the side door, the operator can stop and exit the machine without walking under the load, and then walk around the rear of the machine to engage the support. Unlike old format machines, the new Volvo cab is sealed and pressurised, keeping dust out and noise levels down. In addition to meeting rollover and falling object protection systems standards, the cab’s controls and gauges are ergonomically placed to provide easy use and comfort for prolonged productivity. The left hand machine control pod hinges rearward with the assistance of a gas strut, allowing for easy machine entry and exit. The right control pod features a wrap around seat bar designed to comfortably fit operators of all sizes, and acts as a rest for the operator’s right arm. Both armrests on top of the control pods are cushioned, and the left hand control pod tilts open to reveal ample storage space. A 12V power outlet is also located inside. Another feature of the new Volvo C-Series is improved service access through a forward tilting cab and large rear compartment service door. All service and maintenance points are accessible through simple, safe means.

Cat K series small wheel loaders offer new features The new Cat K series small wheel loader models 924K, 930K, and 938K, have been completely redesigned, incorporating new engines that meet Stage IIIB/iT4 emissions standards, and significant new features that deliver enhanced performance, fuel efficiency and operator comfort. The Cat C6.6 ACER engine powers the three new K-Series wheel loaders, and deliver fuel savings up to 30%, compared with H-Series models. Emissions control technology includes a diesel particulate filter that utilises passive regeneration continuously during normal operation with no impact on productivity. The C6.6 engine’s rated speed setting of 1,800revs/min, compared with 2,415revs/ min for the H series, contributes significantly to reduced fuel consumption, lowered sound levels, and reduced
wear. An engine idle shutdown system further reduces fuel consumption. K-Series models are equipped with a step less, four range, hydrostatic drive system that allows independent control of both ground and engine speed for operation of hydraulically powered work tools. A new creeper control further improves low speed operations by allowing the operator to adjust maximum ground speed down to around 1km/h. An operator controlled rim pull control system helps reduce wheel spin and tyre wear, while a standard front differential lock enhances traction. The dedicated load sensing, variable displacement pumps for the implement and steering systems reduce horsepower draw for fuel efficiency and improve multifunction performance. The new K Series loaders also incorporate an electronic snubbing feature at end stroke and kick out positions to reduce operating stress. Hydraulic filter service intervals are extended to 2,000h. Enhanced Z bar loader linkage blends the breakout power of Z bar linkage with the parallel lift and load handling characteristics of Cat VersaLink or integrated tool carrier linkage. The new linkage, available in both standard and high-lift configurations, accepts pin on tools and a Cat Fusion coupler compatible with competitive work tools. The new linkage is designed to work with Cat performance series buckets. A new operator’s station features automatic temperature control, curved front windshield, heated rear window with intermittent wiper, and a soft touch control panel. The electronic joystick for implement control, is seat mounted, adjustable, and incorporates integral controls for auxiliary hydraulics, directional shifting, and differential, lock. “It is always nice to see old friends and meet new ones in our industry, but the highlight of the fair was the unexpected opportunity to assist one of China’s leading floor grinder machine manufacturers. While demonstrating how their machine polished the floor in a concrete formwork, but the resin tools fell off color on the concrete and glazed”, said Ashine President Richard Deng. The company had heard about Ashine, and asked if they could use the Ashine Resin Polaris Pad to repolish the surface. Ashine happily obliged and the result turned out great, according to Ashine. No color fall off, no glaze and even better gloss. “Everyone in the stand was deeply impressed,” said Deng. “After testing, several Chinese and worldwide equipment manufacturers expressed interest in working with Ashine. In addition, a Chinese distributor of an American floor chemical brand praised our company’s professional approach and strong R&D capabilities in concrete/terrazzo floor grinding and polishing,” finished Deng.

See U in Vegas! World of Concrete is steadily picking up and so is the US market. Maybe not like in the heydays but surely in the right direction. And best of all with World of Concrete, no matter how bad it is on the market, it’s “Business as Usual”. And the right and the professional audience always come and they bring their positive attitude with them.
It is again time for the US show World of Concrete taking place at the Las Vegas Convention Centre on 5-8 February 2013. Since 2009 WOC has been suffering due to the economic situation in the US. It has seen a quite drastic decrease in the number of visitors. In 2009 there were about 63,000 visitors, in 2010 about 55,000 and in 2011 the number dropped below 50,000. The number of exhibitors has also seen falling below 1,200 and just above in 2012. But in 2012 the number of visitors started to climb again and went up with 7% to little over 52,000. As PDi went to press the number of exhibitors for the 2013 show was above 13,300, an increase of about 10% from 2012.
Business as usual Even though numbers have declined during difficult economic times, the professional audience has never left WOC and the next show looks promising. Maybe all of the big manufactures will attend, but in the sectors that PDi covers most of the players are exhibiting and will for sure attract a professional and quality audience. During 2012 the US construction market has showed clear signs of recovery. The flat saw market in particular is picking up

Fighting Aga Fighting or suppressing dust during demolition is a booming sector and the number of manufacturers increasing. PDi reports.
They have many names, water cannons, water mist suppression systems, spray cannons, dust suppression systems. Once they were just snow cannons, used for creating snow. But they were adapted and modified and also proved perfect to fight dust and odour outdoors.
How to cope with out door dust Dust on construction sites has always been a problem. Dust extraction and air cleaning in side buildings has been is use for quite sometime on projects requiring concrete sawing, drilling, floor grinding and polishing, demolition and recycling. There are many manufacturers of these devices for in door use. But dust outside resulting from demolition or recycling activities is also a problem for equipment operators, passers by and residents of adjacent buildings. Then someone came up with the clever idea of adapting traditional snow cannons for use for dust suppression. It is not entirely clear who was the first to come up with this idea. However, there are suggestions in the industry that US manufacturer Dust Control System with their Dustboss were the first, followed by Italian and Swedish companies. During the last five years a number of manufacturers have emerged, such as Dustboss from the US, WLP, DF Ecology, Dust Buster, Techno Alpine and Idrobase from Italy and Duztech from Sweden. Two of the latest entrants to this sector are MB Dustcontrol from the Netherlands and Savic Engineering from Belgium with their brand Spraystream.
Spraystream from Belgium Savic Engineering manufacturers the Spraystream line of dust suppressors. Spraystream is a spraying machine that produces a mist blanket of micro droplets for dust control in open or enclosed areas. The principle consists in agglomerating the micro droplets with the airborne particles, causing them to precipitate. The Spraystream
technology controls dust generated in crushing plants, demolition works, material storage or transhipment of bulk goods, or during spraying in agriculture and horticulture, in an environmentally friendly and efficient manner. It can be used for both indoor and outdoor applications. The aerodynamically shaped turbine, with wind correction, consists of composite material, which is attached to a galvanised structure. This unit can be attached to all structures with the appropriate adapter. The vertical angle is manually adjustable from -35° to +35°. The unit has a stainless steel nozzle ring. Spraystream comes in five different sizes and are available on a trolley, cart or stationary. Spraysteam also have customised spraying systems. Spraystream products are sold almost all over the world and has distributors all over Europe, the US, Australia and New Zealand.

MB Dustcontrol from the Netherlands MB Dustcontrol recently added new SprayCannons to their series of dust suppression products. The SprayCannon 100 and the SprayCannon 25 are the latest models. The SC100 has a throw of 100m or 35m high and uses 1,800 to 4,500litres/h of water. Especially in high demolition this machine has outstanding performance in suppressing dust. The SC25 has a throw of 25m or 15m high with a usage of 1 to 1,000litres/h. This unit is one of the first 230V machines in the market. MB probably offers the widest range of SprayCannons in the world. Since the production of dust suppression equipment is their core business and in their own words, “every dust problem needs a specific approach.” They also produce tailormade machines and MB will be exhibiting at Bauma 2013. See page 62-63 for a feature on MB Dustcontrol.

ainst the Dust ternational demolition market. Thanks to the quality and technical features of its systems, the demand for WLP machines has been increasing steadily, in Italy and abroad. Since its inception, WLP has made great strides. The machines are used in demolition projects fields throughout the world and their advantages and benefits are widely recognised. The extreme flexibility of the units, together with their ease of use, make WLP dust suppression systems suitable for all kinds and sizes of demolition projects. One of WLP’s major projects, where its dust suppression systems demonstrated their superior performance, was during the demolition of Terminal 2 at London’s Heathrow Airport where two dust suppression guns prevented the closure of the terminal activities during demolition. This meant not only better working conditions and less environmental pollution, but also, most importantly, economical savings in terms of lower water and power consumption and less collateral damage. Thanks to this, the airport’s usual activity was not disrupted. This year WLP launched two new models, the WLP 400, which is a new compact and versatile machine characterised by a throw distance of approximately 20-30m, as well as by a power supply of just 3 kW. The WLP 718, which enriches WLP’s top end range, has a throw distance of 80-90m using only 18.5kW. The Germany company LST, offering demolition equipment and attachments, sells dust suppression guns for the German market. The latest success of LST was the demolition of the former ADAC headquarters in Munich. Two dust suppression guns had been applied during the demolition of two buildings covering a total area of 335,000m2. The efficiency of the systems, together with the state-of-the-art technology and the possibility to direct the guns downwards for the demolition of the underground garage, impressed the demolition company.

Dust Control Technology During the year the American manufacturer Dust Control Technology launched a couple of new products. First was the DustBoss DB-RTM Ring, which has been introduced specifically for use at conveyor discharge points to create a virtual curtain around the material flow for particle containment. It has a network of atomizing nozzles that deliver millions of 50-200 micron droplets per minute. By surrounding the discharge flow on all sides, the DustBoss Ring provides simple dust management suited to continuous duty, such as radial stackers. Dust Control Technology introduced its largest DustBoss DB-100 at the Minexpo 2012 trade show, held in Las Vegas in September. The new dust suppressor has a range of more than 100m, giving it ample reach to cover material stockpiles 60m to 90m high and an area of more than 26,000m2 from a single location.

From dust biters
MB Dustcontrol is a young company in the Netherlands that broke into the world of dust control in 2008. For their entrance campaign, they chose a mockingly self-deprecating slogan ‘we bite the dust’. Over the past four years the company, based in The Hague, has grown rapidly and made its presence known in different parts of the world. PDi has traced the company’s progress from humble beginners into fully-fledged dust beaters. Andrei Bushmarin reports.
Michel de Jong has an excellent pedigree in demolition business. First, he made a successful career at Dehaco, arguably the Netherland’s best known trader in demolition attachments. It was followed by a three-year spell at Workx, one of the country’s biggest rental firms. But every employment does have its limits in terms of personal and professional growth, and to realise his full potential, Michel ventured out on his own.
case with small enterprises, both partners were intimately involved in every aspect of their business. Nonetheless, they did do some task splitting, which left van Fruchten overseeing finance and domestic sales, while de Jong ended up doing just about everything else, from product development to international marketing and sales.
International dealers wanted The fledgling company started out with the familiar Benelux market. The very first machine, a self-supporting SprayCannon 25, was delivered to a Dutch recycling contractor Korevaar in May 2008. Once the company’s position on home turf had become solid, the duo began to eye international markets. The neighbouring Germany represented an obvious opportunity, and by 2009 MB Dustcontrol was supplying its spray cannons into the country. Two years later, the company found UK based WheelWash, which became one of their most prolific distributors. Still, the Benelux market remains the company’s biggest at present, with the ratio of domestic to international sales oscillating at 70% to 30%. The company has set itself a task of reversing this ratio within two years. To accomplish this, MB Dustcontrol jumped on the global exhibition circuit, trying to showcase its machines in every corner of the world. Intermat 2012, in particular, proved a big break through for MB Dustcontrol. Its machines, decked out in the company’s bright blue colours, attracted a lot of attention from visitors. Finding an exclusive distributor in each market is a top priority, and the company invites anyone who might be interested in representing MB Dustcontrol in their country to make contact.
A real “hit” in dust suppression
9 base models and many “specials”
On his own is probably not quite right because from the very beginning de Jong had another former Dehaco employee, Ben van Fruchten, as a partner. Curiously, many success stories in the demolition business are those of a two-man partnership. In a way, it can be likened to song writing where it often takes two people to write a song. In the 2000s, dust control, as a business, was still in its adolescence, abounding with opportunities for enterprising minds. Having recognised this, de Jong and van Fruchten decided to choose dust suppression as their main activity and set up MB Dustcontrol in March 2008. As is often the
To dealers and end users, MB Dustcontrol has no shortage of dust fighting equipment to offer. Its standard range includes nine models of water cannons from the smallest SprayCannon 5 to the mighty SprayCannon 100 with a spraying range of up to 100m. Customised machines and special solutions, such as the SprayWall are also available. The SprayWall is an ingenuous dust suppression system, which consists of a 75mm fire hose with special exchangeable nozzles and supports. With a maximum pressure of 10bar, it is capable of creating a 10m wall of fine water mist. Although spray cannons are MB Dustcontrol’s

MB Dustcontrol’s specialists mounted a stainless steel pipe network, equipped with tailor made nozzles, under the building’s ceiling. Supplied under the pressure of 70bar, water turned into an extremely fine mist, binding the airborne particles of dust, while leaving the floor
completely dry. The specifying recycling group, AVR/ van Gansewinkel, was delighted with the result, extolling the professionalism of MB Dustcontrol’s staff. Odour control and wheel washing services are also available with MB Dustcontrol. This being said, manufacturing
of spray cannons is the activity MB Dustcontrol focuses on first and foremost. The future plans of the company are nothing short of ambitious aiming to become one of the world’s top suppliers of spray cannons.
