Plays Well With Others: Cowgirls, Holiday 2023

Cowgirls We’re the outlaws and the outliers. We’re known for breaking broncs, hearts, and glass ceilings. We’re not scared to sear our monikers into belt straps, history books, or the occasional wanted poster. The Cowgirls collection is here to celebrate it all. For the final installment of Plays Well with Others for Fall/Winter 2023, we spent some time in the halls of Fort Worth’s National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame, educating ourselves on our idols, immersing ourselves in the imagery, and simply absorbing the inspiration that exudes from every exhibit. We tied it into skirt silhouettes, created it into custom collage prints, and turned photographs into fashion statements. This collection caters to the duality of the cowgirl: the cattleman side with distinctly Western motifs, strong silhouettes, and lots of leather; and the girly side to us all with pale pinks, fluffy furs, and chain-crystal fringe. One of our largest to date, this collection aims to encompass the entirety of the experience, from the everyday to the extraordinary occasion, and the inclusiveness of the identity, from those in the saddle to those in the C-suite. Cowgirls come from all walks of life. Because it’s not a profession, and it’s dang sure not a hobby. It’s the salt you carry in your soul, the swagger in your stride, and the way you show up in the world: in style.

Take Home the Trophy Spare yourself the toil and tribulation, not to mention the toll on your body, of actually chasing those rodeo wins – your sense of style is already worthy of a place on the podium. Trophy buckles are a time-honored tradition in the Western world and in the last half century they have become more and more widely appreciated for their aesthetic appeal than their earned accolades – they’ve become just as coveted as accessories as they are awards. Fortunately, by way of extraordinary artisan Shawna Erickson, a longtime friend of the family and of the brand, you can dress the part of a decorated rodeo winner without ever making the effort in the arena. Her signature style of silversmithing is ornate engraving complemented by detailed dimensional depictions of livestock or buckle-banner style scripts, a la the Best Dressed Cowgirl scarf slide she commissioned custom for the Cowgirls collection based on inspo Cheryl provided from an old trophy buckle she found. Shawna also has a knack for creating cuffs that wear well with Western couture. We’re thrilled to be a part of this creative collaboration and excited to unveil other exclusive custom creations in the near future!

Band of Sisters There’s a long-running trope about the ‘band of brothers’, the unspoken and irreplicable bond shared by men in the trenches. It originated in war time, but over the years, it’s evolved to encompass any tightly-woven crew that has overcome a common adversary or battled through something together that cleaved them inseverable. Well, by that definition, our Wolf Pack certainly qualifies. Brought together by fashion, fate, and Facebook, this boisterous ‘band of sisters’ has united from all corners of the country into a pack that plays together, prays together, and will road trip to the ends of the earth together. They’ve been companionship in quarantine, comfort in a loss, cheerleaders in a struggle, and the champagne toast waiting at the finish line of every success, celebration, or even just survival. We can’t take the credit for it – we made the clothes, you made the community – but we are in endless awe.

National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame For a collection celebrating everything it means to be a cowgirl, we had to start at the beginning, with all the remarkable women who came before us to push the boundaries and pave the way. We had to start in the Cowgirl Hall of Fame. After all, it’s an institution for gals like us and of gals like us; it includes a number of our idols and, we’re fortunate to say, even a few of our friends! The museum, located in Fort Worth, Texas, is home to a captivating collection of art and exhibitions, homages to trailblazers and education on the legends of the lifestyle, and – humble brag – DDR was honored with the Mary Jane Colter Award in 2015 and we’re flattered to be featured in the museum’s “Dare to Wear” exhibit, which celebrates the unforgettable outfits and boundary-pushing designers who shaped the sartorial progression of classic cowgirls and rodeo queens. In concepting Cowgirls, we spent some time meandering, almost meditatively, absorbing the imagery and inspiration, imagining a day in the life of some of these precocious pioneers. Antique woolie chaps sparked inspiration for our fuzzy, furry boot covers, our side-slit skirts were inspired by sidesaddle show costumes, and the collection’s signature midnight prints came to fruition from a creative collage of actual photos.

Bronc Belts Bronc belts are those extra-wide waist-cinching contraptions, usually finished with two or three buckles, and embellished with anything from jewels and gemstones to applique to metallic studded monograms, so named for their original intent of stabilizing the cores of rough stock riders way back in the day. Initially prevalent and purposeful in most rodeos, they soon shifted to include the more eye-catching and ornamental iterations in productions like the widely attended Wild West shows, and eventually, much like ketohs and gauntlets, the form outlasted the function and they found their way into fashion. A century or so ago, these big bold belts had an implied entendre that you were kind of a badass. If you ask us, they still do.

Ladies Who Luxe It’s the most wonderful time of year for a lot of reasons, but at the top of our list is the cashmere couture. Sure, a lot of people get excited about sweater weather, from cable-knits to cardigans, it’s a whole thing. But I think we can all agree, cashmere is in a class all its own. It’s a far cry from the bulkiness that’s all about bundling up; it’s chic, sophisticated, and let’s admit it, a status symbol. When we created our initial Cashmere Cores a couple years ago, it was satisfying a personal ‘need for a niche’, a desire for ultra-chic staples that were upscale and evergreen, true timeless building blocks for our winter wardrobe. The fact that we’re still reaching for them with regularity solidifies our suspicion that we were on to something, and perhaps it was worthy of a revisit. Coinciding with the Cowgirls collection, we’ve expanded to include an enchanting deep forest green line and a sleek straight-line midi skirt that promises practicality from the rodeo to Rodeo Drive.

Put It in Neutral With so much color clamoring for our attention this year (ahem, ‘90s neons and Barbie pinks), we have a whole new appreciation for neutrals. Core pieces – and colors – have always been key to classic couture. When you picture someone who embodies “timeless, classy, and elegant”, it’s likely images of crisp silhouettes in blacks, whites, maybe navies, and silvery greys and warm neutrals – creams, khakis, ecru, and even (dare we say it?) beige. We know, ‘beige’ has gotten a bit of a bad rap lately; it’s become a euphemism in pop culture for the bland, perfunctory, and safe. In your closet, however, beige and its soft-spectrum sisters are queen. Shear Perfection We’re going to let you in on a style secret: shearling is the it-factor this season. For both guys and gals, from mountain mornings to Saturday night in the city, handme-down heirlooms to high-fashion finds right from the runway, shearling is showing up in a big way. And, thanks to our excursions abroad this summer, we’re extremely lucky to have an in with one of the most exclusive and sought-after suppliers of Spanish shearling – because why bother if you can’t bring the best of the best? The story with shearling is that it falls perfectly in line with that trending affinity for comfort dressing, particularly cozy couture, which embraces the idea of feeling snuggly without looking sloppy. Additionally, shearling is becoming heavily favored in high fashion over traditional fur for its obvious ethical implications and more sustainable sourcing, as well as for sheer (no pun intended) tactile preference. Beauties, Bronc Riders, and Bandit Queens Decades ago, Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Laurel Thatcher Ulrich first penned the now-ubiquitous phrase, “Wellbehaved women seldom make history.” Boy, isn’t that the truth. A quick internet query of the term ‘famous cowgirls’ will yield you a whole slew of sepiatoned images of gals with a few rap sheets and wanted posters to their name – your Belle Starrs, your Laura Bullions, and your Pearl Harts – many of whom were just doing what the boys were doing, but better. Some weren’t so much outlaws as outliers; women who dared demand a seat at the table or a spot in the arena where they were just as skilled, if not more so, than their male counterparts – the Annie Oakleys, the Lucille Mulhalls, and the Prairie Rose Hendersons. Ulrich’s words unintentionally unified a genre – or rather, a generation – of women who were simply sick of the status quo, of boys’ club mentalities, and of not rocking the boat just because they were lucky to be in it in the first place. You know, us “loud women”. But here’s the rub: seldom isn’t never. Sometimes gamechangers and foundation-shakers come in the form of benevolence, brains, and beauty, like every Miss Rodeo America who becomes a role model for the way of life, every female who’s the first in their field, every philanthropist who advocates for the advancement of the industry. That’s the thing about cowgirls – we’re not all good, and we’re not all bad. But we’re all a little bit unforgettable. The truth is, it doesn’t matter if you’re ranch-raised, a queen of the rodeo arena, or have never stepped foot off the city streets, as long as you’ve got a barrier-breaking spirit and a wild mustang soul, you can count yourself a cowgirl.
