Blaze Your Own Trail: Wide Open Trails, Fall 2024
Wide Open Trails
There’s a beauty in being beholden to no one.
One time, in the early 1990s, when we were just a fledgling clothing company, we learned a very valuable lesson. We lost ourselves trying to chase trends. We let consultants and critics convince us we needed to pivot more towards the mainstream, rather than cater to our corner of the market, our niche we’d carved, our own brand of bold. We produced a line that simply wasn’t true to us, and it didn’t feel good. From that point forward, we vowed to always believe in our customers and bet on ourselves. So, when almost nothing in the trend reports was resonating with us for fall, we decided it was time to blaze our own trail – and blaze it wide open.
This collection is unique and eccentric and elegant all in one. We allowed ourselves to experiment with old classics – like our take on toile and the trench coat – and try out some things that are novel and new to us – like velvet vests, structured cashmere, and the exquisite incorporation of fine furs. Everything about this collection is a little bit different, yet distinctly DDR. It’s crisp and elevated, even in the way we photographed it, with mesmerizing monochromatics and sleek silhouettes.
It’s a salute to the corporate cowgirls. It’s a toast to broadening horizons, breaking glass ceilings, and blazing your own trail.
It’s Toile, Y’all
While the name is undeniably French, the origins of this famously pretty print are actually traced back to Ireland in the 18th Century where the invention of a copper plating technique made it possible to print detailed depictions on a large scale. It became mainstream here in America thanks to founding father (and famed Francophile) Thomas Jefferson who incorporated the intricate aesthetic into the décor at Monticello. Though arguably timeless, the popularity of toile has ebbed and flowed over the centuries, experiencing a resurgence in the 1970s and showing up again in trend reports for fall and beyond. Our custom version incorporates elements true to Texas, like live oaks, cattle drives, and cowboy campfires.
(P.S. Not only is the title apt for this Texas-themed version, it’s also a handy mnemonic to remind you how it’s pronounced – ‘twaal’, rhymes with y’all!)
Chic Shards
Ancient meets modern in an unexpected application of up-cycling.
These contemporary creations boast authentic bits of Anasazi pottery, unearthed and expertly crafted into pieces of southwestern jewelry in place of statement-sized specimen stones of turquoise or coral or spiny oyster. The shards (acquired from traders, dealers, and in some cases, the diggers themselves) are centuries old, and yet their geometric and monochromatic scheme lends an ultra-modern air – a testament to their timelessness.
Luxe Redux
An exquisite outfit deserves an unforgettable accessory. Little known secret about luxury handbags: they don’t all have to look the same. Don’t get us wrong, we love a good go-to designer classic in our wardrobe, but they won’t make you the object of a little ‘exclusivity envy’ like sporting something no one else has. These eye-catching investment pocketbooks are one of a kind, created from unique vintage ‘50s and ‘60s finds, reinvented with upscale elements like luxury mink trim, and ornate accents with Western sensibilities.
“Women, whether subtly or vociferously, have always been a tremendous power in the destiny of the world.”
- Eleanor Roosevelt, “It’s Up to the Women”
In the Trench
There’s something irresistible and empowering about taking an icon and making it your own.
The traditional trench coat has a long and storied history with military origins and movie star mystique. Credited to Scottish chemist Charles Macintosh and British inventor Thomas Hancock, the first versions were waterproof WWI wear, made to protect soldiers from the unfavorable conditions of wet warfare in the trenches. Popularity ensued almost immediately, as an outward show of support for the troops among British civilians, but it could certainly be argued that the trench coat wasn’t launched into the style stratosphere until it was donned by the likes of silver screen legends Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca and Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s
The iconic outerwear has been adapted into countless iterations over the decades, not the least of which is our own DDR interpretation. We wanted to remain true to the key components that make a trench a trench – the belt, the shoulder epaulettes, the wide notch lapel – but the distinct difference is that we opted to craft it in our own level of luxe: a soft, supple suede with subtle western design lines.

Wilder & Woolier
And dare we say, even better?
Double D Ranch has long been known for our stop-and-stare statement jackets – it’s kind of our thing – but even so, the Wild & Woolie Jacket was a risk. Unlike our leather bikers that have consistently been the cornerstones of our collections, this jacket was unapologetically ostentatious with its full-volume fur sleeves, and we had a real “will they love it, or won’t they?” go-round before we debuted the first version last year. Well, spoiler alert: it sold out in record time. So, bolstered with that vote of confidence, the Wild & Woolie is back and better than ever, trading the fringed vest-like silhouette for a more structured jacket-style shell in an ultrachic snake-skin-embossed leather.
Cashmere Construct
It took us decades to dare to design cashmere, and now that it’s in our repertoire, we’re never looking back.
We debuted it in knits, the super-soft staples (wide-leg pants, skirt, simple shift sweater) and those irresistible extras (the luxurious gloves and exquisite fur-lined cape). This season, we’re embracing the ultra-polished aesthetic of the corporate cowgirl with structured wovens. Whereas our knits were considered more core pieces to be adorned and accessorized, these wovens are outer pieces intended to elevate your outfit. You can add a cashmere complement to any number of ensembles with the refined and reversible vest or complete your soft-yet-sophisticated look with our classic cut cashmere blazer – bonus points if you belt it!
Texas Tuxedo
Say hello to a whole new twangy take on top-to-bottom denim.
We’ve all seen the sometimes sloppy, sometimes chic ensemble of denim on denim, and well, this is not that. On the one hand, it’s pinstripe power suit with all the swagger that suggests cowgirls belong in the boardroom. On the other hand, it has that runway-meetsrodeo essence that feels very high-end, lowkey. The soft shades of brown lend themselves to a sort of soft spoken statement that says, “I’m not flashy, I’m formidable.” Designing it in denim opened up a whole spectrum of style; it can be instantly elevated with something sleek and simple like a silk shirt or cashmere vest, or it can be rounded out with Western flair by pairing it with a pearl snap or the unforgettable Outfit Marks Blouse.
No matter how or where you wear it, this dynamic denim duo means business.

The Look of the Lifestyle
Imagine if you could don a designer’s daydream.
If you’ve ever sat near a creative in a meeting, you know their minds are almost never at rest, and neither are their hands, as evidenced by the margins of their meeting notes. That’s the essence of this jacket; it channels a Cheryl McMullen daydreaming doodle session (though we used old cowboy illustrations and a key of actual brands) all laid out on luxurious leather. It’s all the elements of the lifestyle that we love. It’s lariats and livestock. It’s bridles and brands. It’s fringe and fur.
We’d be remiss not to talk about this texture. We created this jacket in rich, beefy suede that we processed to give it a fleck before printing on it. It provides a tactile sense of already being a well-loved leather, and it camouflages dirt and wear, so it’s a piece you can effortlessly love for life.
The Art of Authenticity: Teal Blake
Authenticity is always in style. That’s what drew us to the artwork of fellow Fort Worthian, Teal Blake.
Originally from Montana and raised surrounded by ranching country, Teal grew up truly living – and loving – the lifestyle that would one day become the subject of almost all his artwork. As he states in his bio, Teal’s “love for the tradition of ranching and cowboying is unparalleled, and his portrayal of ranch life and the handful of people keeping it alive is an authentic one. No models, no costumes, simply being fortunate enough to work and ride alongside his friends and muses; he is able to capture his material and inspiration first-hand.”
We recognized and respected that attribute immediately, and it compelled us to commission some of his creations into this collection. While not (by definition) a true collaboration, we are honored to have the opportunity to showcase some of his work. He has a good grasp on illustrating the relationship between horse and rider, which is very hard to do. He’s the real deal, and it shows in his art.

Look for the Label: Saga Furs
When it comes to fine furs, Saga sets the standard. Literally.
An organization that’s been in existence for more than 80 years, Saga Furs has evolved from an auction house to the industry leader in grading and sourcing the world’s highest quality furs.
Saga grading is performed manually by expert graders, using a rubric that (at a glance) sounds surprisingly similar to that for grading diamonds, taking into account categories like quality and color, special characteristics, and clarity. Grades are ranked on a seven-tier scale, further broken down into factoring criteria like skin quality, underwool, nap, hair, and overall appearance.
In addition to being the industry authority on quality, the world also recognizes Saga as the ethical pioneer of sustainable and responsible practices.
Needless to say, we are honored to be among the elite.
