All applicants are accepted, but not all will succeed, and tuition will take far more from you than money. Whether you call it the school of hard knocks or academy of life lessons, Cowpoke U teaches the kind of character that can’t be bought.

This collection is a tongue-in-cheek conceptualization of cowboy mojo and college memorabilia, of imagining a university that offers an education that most of us just came by honestly, with courses like Fence Mending 101, Intro to Horse Saddling, or Steer Wrestling for P.E. credit. Demerits mean you’re on breakfast duty before dawn and perfect attendance earns you a Saturday night at the dancehall. The fashion has a familiar feel, with collegiate classics like a letterman jacket, and embraces the eminent era of ‘prep chic’ with a Western sensibility. The first installment of Fall 2023’s “Plays Well With Others” also features some colorful characters from art class, the oneof-a-kind renderings of Waxahachie-based collaborating artist Bruce Lee Webb.

It’s edgy in an academia kind of way. It’s new-wave and nostalgia. It’s eccentric and understated and unexpectedly charming. It’s simultaneously universal and unique, appealing to the individual in us all. It’s Cowpoke YOU.

Collab & Cowpoke 101

Part of the inspiration and impetus behind “Plays Well with Others” was the desire to explore collaborations with other creatives; particularly to showcase those artists whose work we’ve long admired, those with a style so individual that the designs are inherently hallmarked and the artists’ aesthetic is introduced to our audience in an engaging and immersive way – through wearable works of art.

A lifelong student but a far cry from teacher’s pet, Bruce Lee Webb was admittedly more of a rebellious wunderkind who first fell in love with the sound and spirit of punk rock and then discovered that creativity flows from folks in a multitude of mediums, and he found his first forte doodling on old band tees.

Often thought of as a Western Picasso, Webb’s pieces push the envelope of perception, playing with the physical representation of the psychological or creating characters with full fictional backgrounds that are born from loose doodles. His Webb Art Gallery in Waxahachie is an eccentric art oasis in the otherwise traditional Texas town.

A true fan (and personal owner) of his art, DDR Creative Director Cheryl McMullen approached Webb about a collaboration for Cowpoke U, and after a few days in his studio settling in with the idea of what it means to be a cowpoke, Webb presented a whole cast of cowboy characters and those faces have now made their foray into fashion.

A man of a million influences, Webb is like a rolling stone with a sticky side, picking up a little bit of inspiration from everywhere he goes, from every creative he meets, from every song that speaks to him, and from studying centuries of artistic expressions across continents and cultures; still, he says the key to effective art is within us.

“We should all tell our own story. That would be my advice to any young artist; I think you’re always on the right track if you do that.”

From way back when we first started paying extra for already-distressed denim, there was born an almost inexplicable appreciation for a “well-loved” look.

Fashion is once again trending toward a relaxed and rugged vibe with boxy silhouettes, classic cut buttondowns, and wide-legged jeans. More elevated than the “shabby chic” of the ‘90s, this era is all about embracing the “raw” aesthetic – expect unwashed indigo denims and worn-raw details like frayed edges and mock-mending. Perfectly imperfect.

Fleece De Resistance

Impressively strong, irresistibly soft, and unbelievably stylish.

They say that “amazing happens outside your comfort zone”, and well, we must admit that this foray into fleece exceeded our expectations. We tend to deal more often in denims and suedes, luxe leathers and rich velvets; materials that we’ve made our mark with, that have (literally) become part of the fabric of DDR’s DNA. But fleece is really its own thing entirely.

It’s warm, it’s soft, and its cozy factor can’t be beat. The challenge, of course, is that fleece is a fuller textile, which makes detail difficult. By that same token, however, it lends itself beautifully to bigger, bolder prints; scaled up so that the execution doesn’t have to be exact to accomplish the aesthetic. It proved perfect for a traditional geometric blanket pattern brought to life in a fire-and-ice color scheme that tempers warm oranges and yellows with cool blues and creams.

Blue Ribbon Style

Color has been king this year. From pretty pinks to all variations of gorgeous greens and even sunshine shades throughout the summer, the whole vibe has been vibrant, happy hues. As we transition into fall, we’re leaning more into what we consider comfort colors.

Unlike more preferentially polarizing hues – think oranges, purples, even pinks -- blue is one of the most universally appealing and agreed-upon colors on the chart. From cornflower to indigo, there seems to be a shade on the spectrum that seems to speak to almost everyone, so in terms of fashion, it’s excitingly inclusive and uniquely serves as its own sort of neutral.

Denim is the everyman’s uniform; ubiquitous and utilitarian, dependable and durable. It has a connotation connected to hard work (we do call it blue-collar work, after all) and cowboy culture (what with all the denim they don), so it was almost innate to incorporate it as a key color component of Cowpoke U.

Translated from Latin, it means with great distinction or great praise, and this season’s signature biker jacket is certainly deserving of both.

All of our statement jackets are eye-catching, it’s simply an expected hallmark of our aesthetic, but the Cowpoke U Jacket is in a league all its own, almost understated in its allure and yet impossible to ignore. The straw shade of the sheepskin leather is a masterclass in the nature of neutrals, the timeless, seasonless, universal versatility of it. It also teaches a thing or two about texture; how the super-soft (like, strangers-want-to-touch-it soft) leather is complemented by the textural hair-on hide or crisply contrasted by the cool metal studding. And count it as an A+ in color theory, the way the analogous hues harmonize between the light camel and the slightly off-shade ecru; it’s a palette of perfection.
