Come Away With Me: Folk Foray Colleciton, Spring 2022

Folk Foray Our aesthetic has always been an amalgamation of influence, but this collection is a whole wide world of inspiration, presented in a bright burst of color. Folk Foray is the second of the Spring 2022 Come Away With Me collections, weaving together a lifetime of experiences and aesthetic appreciation from both old and New Mexico, Eastern Europe, and even India. It brings our love of folk art to life in a sartorial sense, from the vibrant colors of kachinas to the intricacy of Olinala boxes. It has a very multicultural feel while channeling strong Iris Apfel vibes with in-your-face colors and over-the-top prints. It embraces an irreverence and a freedom from fashion “rules” and emboldens a vivaciousness that says, “I wear what makes me feel good.” Put on that poppy lipstick. Double-down with mix-matched prints. Add on one more accessory. Fearlessly live your life out loud. This is the year to be you.

Luminarias We’re collectors of all kinds of trinkets, but few things light up our face quite like a luminaria. (See what we did there?) Deeply rooted in Mexican culture, their aesthetic reflects as much, with intricate floral designs hand-painted in vivid colors that are tempered down by the inherently earthy terracotta from which they are sculpted. Luminarias are each crafted by hand, no two exactly the same, and often take the form of a chapel with bell towers and arcade windows that illuminate when you place a votive candle inside. Endlessly enamored with these one-of-a-kind folk art finds, we’ve accumulated a curated collection of traditional luminaries to accompany this collection.

Turquoise in any Form Our belief in the universal wearability and ubiquitous necessity of turquoise is so deeply held that it appears in the Double D Ranch mission statement. And we love it every which way we can wear it. Hues of green have been the tie that binds throughout the recent collections and the collections to come. It’s been a symbolic shade in the postCOVID world, signifying feelings of hope and health, and evoking imagery of time spent outdoors. It’s a grounding color that pulls others together and green possesses a unique transformative spectrum that ranges from happy spring greens to pensive deep emeralds and then dances over to the bluer side of the color wheel for a charming turquoise that can complement dang near anything. From a muted and minty to saturated and vibrant, turquoise is a key component of this collection and the ultimate accent color, from your outfit to your accessories, or heck, even your nail polish.

Kachina Crazy If you haven’t caught on to our kachina craze, you haven’t been paying attention. The origins and artistry of these colorful characters are endlessly fascinating and aesthetically appealing, and Cheryl has been collecting these figurines for decades – she has kachinas older than her children! From standalone kachina dolls to depictions of the spirits in jewelry creations, they evoke a sense of awe and reverence and often represent a meaning, a message, or a source of protection. Kachinas have experienced phases of evolution from two-dimensional representations displayed above the cribs of infants, to tourist trinkets in roadside shops along Route 66, to life-size iterations gracing museums and adorning storefronts in southwestern towns. And you can bet that as long as there are kachinas to collect, Cheryl will keep shopping and sharing them.

All Over the Map Palette, print, and pattern are key components to any collection, but in Folk Foray, they are the heartbeat, the lifeblood. The vibrance of the color, the scale of the print, the collaboration of cultures culminating in the embroidery – it’s all integral to embodying the essence of a foray through a fancy flea market. This collection showcases aesthetic inspiration from all over the world, from the huipil-style embroidery of Old and New Mexico, to the simplified floral shapes of Eastern Europe, to the chic shisha mirrors of East India, with of course, some classic southwestern spin. It’s bright and it’s bold. It’s unforgettable. It envelopes places we’ve been and styles we’ve studied, and Folk Foray makes an impression that is impossible to ignore.

“Fashion you can buy, but style you possess. The key to style is learning who you are, which takes years. There’s no how-to roadmap to style. It’s about self-expression and, above all, attitude.” – Iris Apfel

Life in Color In recent years, there has been a lot of buzz about having things in your house that “spark joy”, and while we wouldn’t quite classify ourselves as minimalists, we do ascribe to the notion in a broad sense. The Folk Foray collection dovetails so beautifully with the current DDR Home offerings because it is essentially an amalgamation of all our favorite things. Bright colors, strong serapes, intricate embroidery. Folk art, combining of cultures, inspirations drawn from experiences. Duvet covers, throw pillows, euro shams. Vintage pieces given new vibrance with custom fabrics and Annie Sloan paint jobs. It all works on its own and it all works together. Your home is your haven, fill it with everything that makes you happy.

Down Mexico Way There’s a saying among authors, “write what you know”. In reality, that applies to all creatives. Musician, painters, and yes, even designers – we’re all drawing upon things we’ve seen or experienced. Growing up in South Texas, Mexican culture was a component of our upbringing. From the food to the fashion, we were immersed in it, always had an appreciation for it, and ultimately, it just became woven into the fabric of who we are. It’s no surprise that elements of it appear in this collection, which is a collective celebration and aesthetic appreciation for a literal world full of inspiration, from folk art finds we’ve collected along the way to the bold blues of traditional New Mexico doorways.

The Art of Olinala Primarily crafted to hold jewelry, Olinala boxes are as beautiful outside as what they store inside. These gorgeous hand-crafted creations are aptly named for their city of origin, although the trade has expanded throughout the southwest Mexican state of Guerrero, whose mountainous regions are an abundant source of the linaloe wood from which they are crafted. The base color of the boxes is typically black and the colorful floral and tribal designs are renowned for their symmetry, created using either rayado (meaning “scratched”) or aplicado (“applique”) techniques, and finished with linaloe or chia seed oil, which gives them their signature citrusy scents. Enchanted by their beauty and unique characteristics, Cheryl has become an avid Olinala collector over the years, the artistry of which inspired much of the folk embroidery of the collection as well as the Mexicali Boot.

Free-Spirited Fashion Be vivid. Be vibrant. Be unapologetically vivacious. Among our multitude of influences and inspirations for this collection is the legendary Iris Apfel, an American entrepreneur, interior designer, and “accidental icon” with unmistakable style, a part of which is an affinity for the extraordinary designs of Double D Ranch, which you’ll find in both her closet and her home. Everything about Iris is exaggerated. Oversized coke-bottle glasses. Enormous costume jewelry – and too much of it. Color combinations that every sidebar style guide in fashion mags would strongly advise against. Gravity-defying garment volume. It should be strident, but it’s stunning. Her irreverence is intoxicating. Iris is the embodiment of the ideal that the only rule in fashion is it must make you feel good. If you like it, get it – and wear it all together. Your outfit is an expression, and we’re daring you to set your spirit free.
