Grand Canyon Our design inspiration comes in all shapes and sizes, in all forms, and from all angles. The Heritage Departure collections were born out of wanderlust. “Outside and anywhere but here,” Double D Ranch designer Cheryl McMullen said of her pandemic restlessness. “Not literally; I was fortunate to be surrounded by people I love, but as a creative, not being able to change your surroundings even a little bit, can be stifling. I longed to travel. To be in nature. To see places I didn’t even realize I had a strong desire to visit, until I wasn’t allowed. The Grand Canyon. Yellowstone. The Adirondacks. Banff. Places of pure beauty. That’s what sparked the inspiration for the Fall 2021 Heritage Departures collections.” The first of these collections, Grand Canyon, is transitional; it plays with colors and silhouettes that work beautifully in summer, fall, and beyond. Minty to sage greens, warm to deep browns, teals, navy. You see fabrics in unexpected iterations, leather shorts and velvet sundresses, and the Grand Canyon collection has a distinctively southwestern feel in its patterns and prints. If the last year has taught us anything, it’s that the opportunity to explore is a privilege. The time is now. Explore your world. Explore your surroundings. Explore your style.

Battery Birds As the saying goes, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure”, and no one brought more truth to that phrase than Santo Domingo Pueblo jewelry artisans. “They were known for being innovative,” Cheryl said. “A lot of Santo Domingo pieces are Depression Era jewelry, and you know in the 1930s and ‘40s, everyone was just making do with what they had or what they could find. These jewelry makers were salvaging tiny bits of turquoise that previously would’ve been discarded and working them into mosaic designs.” And their ingenuity goes beyond just salvaging scraps of semi-precious stones and shells and setting them into a “bigger picture” piece. They made the most of everyday items one would never expect to find in a piece of beautiful jewelry. “They started incorporating pieces of bone, gypsum, even plastics like old vinyl records and red plastic Dairy Queen spoons, and the black vulcanite casings of old car batteries,” Cheryl explained. “Which, of course, is where these colorful creations got their nickname. These pieces were originally sold for about a dime to roadside tourists, it’s kind of poetic justice that they’re highly sought after and collectible nowadays. In fact, we’re so inspired by them that we designed them into a custom DDR print for this collection.” The Santo Domingo Pueblos were the original ‘upcyclers’, and almost a century later, this ‘trash’ is more treasured than ever.

Meet Penelope Joe A 19-year-old with a talent, a passion, and a dedication to her roots. Petite and precocious, Penelope Joe discovered her gift and decided her path at a remarkably young age: she was going to be an artist. What started as a nightly after-dinner family tradition of scribbling and sketching developed into award-winning artwork and painting for pay. “I was 12 years old when I entered my first art show, that was in the Gallup Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial,” Penelope said. “And my painting won first place. By the time I decided I definitely was going to enter, I only had one week to complete that painting, Storytelling of the Creation of the Horses.” The optimism and attitude of this recent high school graduate is inspiring under the best of circumstances, but given her origin story, it’s even more exceptional. Penelope was born and raised on the Navajo reservation, where chores and duties were ample and luxuries were scarce, not having electricity in her ranch home until age 13 and currently still living without running water. And yet, she seizes opportunities with gusto, and when they don’t exist, she creates them. “We were blown away when she reached out to us wanting to model for Double D Ranch,” Cheryl admitted. “She was so earnest and genuine, and as you might imagine, we admire a girl with moxie! The way she presented herself and her goal, to change the narrative around the relationship between Native American artisans and the Western fashion world, and that she wanted to be the one to do it. We were flattered to learn she is a lifelong fan of DDR, and honored she wanted to be a part of our story.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 29

“I was very little when I first learned of Double D Ranch,” Penelope said. “The Cowboys & Indians magazine was everything in our house, and I have been keeping up with their fashion for as long as I can remember. It has been a dream of mine to model for DDR since I was young.” Fortunately, we were able to facilitate that dream, and Penelope impressed us just as much in person. We learned so much about her, her ambitions, and her commitment to her Navajo culture. She’s headed to Diné College in the fall, focusing on art and Diné studies, and frequently gives motivational speeches to students about the importance of staying involved in the Navajo Nations and perpetuating the traditions. We have future endeavors in the works with her – and her lovely mother, Thema – that we can’t quite share yet, but you haven’t seen the last of Penelope and DDR. She may be staying close to home, but Penelope Joe is going places. And we’ll be rooting for her every step of the way.

Hoodoo Rocks There’s something about being deep down in a canyon, totally off the grid, and miles away from anything manmade, that makes you take pause in utter awe of what the earth is capable of creating. Roads, rivers, and in this case, rocks. Scattered throughout the canyon, you’ll find clusters of natural phenomena called hoodoo rocks, enormous boulders that appear as if they’ve been set atop a pedestal. These unusual formations occur when a large, dense rock falls onto a bed of softer rock, such as mudstone or loose sandstone, which is eventually eroded away by running water or other natural elements, leaving only a narrow stem-like structure supporting the larger domed rock. Because erosion occurs at an almost imperceptible pace, hoodoo rocks are several thousand years old, and no two are the same. Isn’t nature fascinating?

Surround Yourself In Style It’s been said that ‘Double D Ranch is not just a look, it’s a lifestyle’. We’re inclined to agree. “We’re bringing an emphasis to things beyond just clothes,” Cheryl said. “We all spent a lot of time in our homes last year and it brought a new awareness to the way we style our spaces and how our immediate surroundings can affect us. And our homes are essentially an extension of ourselves, so we decided to revisit the idea of making the DDR aesthetic available to our customers in a 360-degree fashion.” Not only are we designing a few new concepts for DDR Home, we are also offering the opportunity to acquire some of the pieces that we ourselves have been drawn to from our own homes or studios, or pieces that have accompanied DDR collections in editorial images. “After thirty-plus years of collecting for design inspiration, editorial photography, et cetera, we’re busting at the seams!” Cheryl laughed. “Lately, there’s been an increased interest among our customers for some of those things, and we’re excited to share them with someone else who appreciates them.” So keep your eye out for some fun bits of décor that might just need a new home in your home.

The Versatility of Velvet We’ve always been all for bucking the ‘rules’ of fashion. Felt hats only after Labor Day, straw hats and whites only after Easter? Don’t tell us what to do. Because here’s the thing, if you wear it right, you can wear what you love all year long. Velvet, like suede, is one of those materials that people long said was for late fall and winter. We disagree. “The key is shade and silhouette,” explained Cheryl. “You can have a floor-length velvet broom skirt, and in a soft mint, it’s still very much spring and summer appropriate. Or even in darker shades, in a shortsleeve or a flowy sundress, it works beautifully from season to season. I think what matters most is how you pair it; balance it with lighter fabrics, chambray denims or even a cotton tank and a concho belt in the warmer months.” The only fashion rule we believe in is looking and feeling your absolute best; it’s your wardrobe, make it work for you, all year round.

Snake Charmers Oscar Betz has long been known for his signature chandelier earrings. He mastered the art of creating tiered dangles that were hinged and lightweight and they became instantly recognizable and synonymous with his name, “Oscar obvious”, if you will. But even a master of his craft gets an artist’s itch to try something new every now and then. “The great thing about working with a creative genius like Oscar is that rather than commissioning him, we get to truly collaborate with him,” Cheryl explained. “We can come up with a vague idea and he can execute it with complete creative freedom. And other times, the ideas and creations are entirely his own. These silver snake pins were something he felt compelled to create, and we instantly loved

them; it was just fortuitous that they happened to coincide with the Grand Canyon collection.” Lightweight and lovely, these handstamped sterling silver snakes are adorned with turquoise cabochons of varying size and shades. A charming way to add some southwestern style to everything from your hat to your scarf to your favorite jean jacket.

Wood You Look At That? There’s a saying that innovation is born out of desperation. Petrified wood jewelry is a prime example. “Lately, I’ve been on the lookout for petrified wood jewelry pieces,” Cheryl said. “I like the earthiness of the colors, I think it adds an element of variety to our go-to turquoises and corals, and I’m fascinated by the formation and the history behind it.” Petrified wood is technically a fossil in which the actual wood properties have been replaced by crystalized minerals (think agate and quartz, and in rare occasions, opal) to create stone formations that are many million years old and absolutely stunning. As is often the case with naturally-formed creations, each individual piece is unique, there are no two alike. Ironically, the use of petrified wood in jewelry pieces originated during the Depression, a bit of a make-do solution to the financial hardships as well as a shortage of turquoise after the influx of copper mining during the war. Silversmiths and jewelry artisans fashioned petrified wood into everything from earrings to necklaces to statement cuffs accented by ornate sterling silver, and they were able to continue their trade, even when times were tough. However, in later and more recent years, they’ve become highly coveted collectible pieces due to their rarity and inherent one-of-a-kind beauty.

Short & Sweet From jackets to boots, leather has long been integral to our collections. This season, we’re bringing it to life in a statementmaking style: shorts. “I started seeing this look on runways and in European fashion, and I really liked it,” Cheryl said. “It felt fresh, and I thought it was a style that our audience would embrace. In each collection, I like to try something out of the ordinary, something that pushes the envelope a little, something unconventional. This season, it was experimenting with shorts in unexpected fabrics. We did it with this soft leather, and we also did it in velvet.” Pair them with a pearl snap or rock them with a workshirt; these chic shorts are both statement and staple.

Double D Ranch Bandolier Bags

The Collectible Crossbody From festival-goers to moms with their hands full, who doesn’t love a crossbody bag? Dating back to the 1800s, bandolier bags were the original crossbody. While they also have many native names, the English term for them, “bandolier” was derived from the French word “bandouliere” which means “shoulder belt”. They’ve seen a number of iterations over the last few centuries, varying from colorfully beaded bags to those of studded leather, depending on the purpose, region, and the tribe. Native Americans invented the square-style shoulder bags as both practical and ceremonial accessories, modeled after the crossbody cartridge belts of European soldiers. Created primarily by women, bandolier bags became fashionable among men of several Native American tribes. In more recent years, they’ve become more universal and some of the vintage versions crafted in traditional Navajo style with studding and concho embellishments have become highly coveted and collectible.

Make The Most Of It The word ‘sustainability’ has taken on a life of its own lately. It’s become a buzzword that means nothing and many things, all at once, and it looks different to different people. To us, it’s about making things that last and, in turn, making things last. “Double D Ranch has never been, and will never be, ‘fast fashion’,” Cheryl explained. “Our pieces are of a quality and timelessness that is collectible, that people keep for decades and pass down for generations. In general, people don’t discard their DDR; they bestow it, they barter with it, sometimes they even frame it. We aim to do the same with everything that surrounds us; to give each item more than one life, assign it more than one purpose. Whether it’s a painting, a fabric, or a piece of furniture, we want to make the absolute most of it.” It’s not exactly recycling; it’s repurposing, reimagining, and reincorporating. A portrait can be both décor and design inspiration. A vintage bench takes on a fresh DDR aesthetic with fabric from the warehouse. An old poster becomes a new tee. And jewelry we once loved and simply had to have, finds a new home with one of you. Invest in beautiful things, and then make the most of it.

Take A Hike The Grand Canyon may be the biggest and most well-known, but it’s not the only awe-inspiring canyon in the country. Whether you’re into hardcore hiking or recreational sight-seeing, these geographical wonders offer adventures that belong on your bucket list. PALO DURO CANYON, TEXAS Located in the Texas Panhandle, Palo Duro Canyon is the second-largest canyon in the United States and is often referred to as “The Grand Canyon of Texas” for both its size and the similarity of composition. Part national park and part privately owned land, Palo Duro offers a multitude of recreational activities from hiking trails to HumV tours. BUCKSKIN GULCH, UTAH At over 13 miles long, Buckskin Gulch is the longest and deepest slot canyon in the Southwestern United States, and possibly the longest in the world, located in Kane County, Utah, near the Arizona border. While it’s technically not a “hike” – it’s more of a horizontal trail – it’s still a strenuous and beautiful adventure through the slot that is commonly ranked a favorite among hikers. WIND RIVER CANYON, WYOMING This beautiful canyon is a scenic destination along the Wind River located between the towns of Shoshoni and Thermopolis, and a popular spot for visitors of Yellowstone National Park. TITUS CANYON, CALIFORNIA The most popular attraction in Death Valley National Park, Titus Canyon has it all: rugged mountains, colorful rock formations, a ghost town, wildlife, rare plants, and spectacular canyon narrows as a grand finale. It’s time to hit the road and hit the trails!
