Plays Well With Others: Untamed, Fall 1 2023
Untamed Territory
Once in a blue moon, you encounter something so impelling that it becomes a part of you; you consume something so gripping and so powerful that it, in turn, consumes you.
For us, that was 1883. In a league shared only with Lonesome Dove in terms of raw and riveting poignance, the struggle and survival and utmost of all, the evolution of Elsa Dutton, indelibly ignited something within us, a spark that spurred this collection. The moving messages of love and loss and life lessons stirred something in our soul, and the aesthetic of the era started the wagon wheels turning in the design-oriented areas of our mind. The anomalous accoutrements of the Eastern European immigrants, the penchant for practicality and resourcefulness to the point of rebellion, and the collaboration of cultures in the quest for a common ground.
The amalgamation of influence resulted in an array as diverse as those dusty travelers, from pretty petticoats and prairie prints to durable, decorated denims. The Untamed Territory collection embraces the cowboys’ ruggedness and the romance of the Romani wares, the elegance of a proper lady and the grit of a come-by-ithonestly cowgirl. It’s a celebration of the strength that binds us together and the style that sets us apart.
“The air was different. With a strange scent of pollen and smoke, like burning flowers... It smelt wild. Untamed. It was beautiful.”

Loading Up
There was a time when crossing the country meant the clothes on your back and what you could carry –you’d better make sure it mattered.
Listen, we would never dare compare our 21st Century photoshoot commutes to the life-anddeath plight of the pioneers, but let us just say, we can relate a little. If it doesn’t fit in the vehicles, it doesn’t come, and the longer the journey, the tighter the trip, so when it comes to hitting the trail, we really do try to keep it light.
When it comes to outfits and accessories, however, we’ve got a whole different approach. We believe in loading up and layering on, and currently, we’re loving over-the-top belting. Bold belts are back in a BIG way, and it’s your collector concho’s time to shine. Of course, there’s no wrong way to wear it, but you can really level up your look by daring to don it outside your statement jacket.

Make-Believe Made Real
Part of the undercurrent of the Fall 2023 collections is Plays Well with Others, and there is no one we’d rather play make-believe with than ubiquitous set decorator and unrivaled visionary Carla Curry.
If the name sounds familiar, it should. She’s been near and dear to DDR for decades, and while we may consider that our claim to fame, hers can be found in the credits as the set decorator of revered Western works such as All the Pretty Horses, Godless, Crazy Heart, and perhaps most notably, the entire Taylor Sheridan franchise, from Yellowstone to the inspirational impetus behind this collection, 1883
What’s a feather in the cap for Carla is an ace in the hole for us. Cheryl tends to have what we refer to in-house as an “impossible imagination” that often outsizes our extensive cache of props and almost always outsizes our budget; we are beyond blessed to be able to bring in the big guns and call on Carla, her partner-in-creative-crime. Not only did she have an inherent understanding of the 1883-esque aesthetic we were aiming to establish, she had unique access to key elements to make it just so. And with unparalleled efficiency, too – in the time it took for us to make over our models, Carla had transported us in time to the Oregon Trail, real wagons and all.

It’s in the Bag
Rich hues, richer texture, and even richer history, there is something inexplicably romantic about a Romani bag. The size is practical, the shape has personality, and of course, their signature is that unmistakable, irresistible, carpetpile fabric. Finding yours is akin to choosing a piece of artwork, as if you’re toting around your own pretty piece of a Persian rug or a one-of-a-kind fragment of handembroidered textile; something about it speaks to you and each design is as unique as the person carrying it.

Margaret’s Wagon
“My wife could back a wagon through the doors of a saloon. She’ll be fine.”
– James Dutton, 1883And that’s just one of a million reasons we admire and revere Mrs. Margaret Dutton. In a lot of ways, that wagon is a metaphor for her family and an allusion to her adaptability, perseverance, and will – and skill – to survive. You rarely see her separated from it, it houses everything that matters to her in this world, and her most momentous conversations seem to happen when she’s perched on the box seat or propped against a wheel.
So, you might imagine our star-stuck splendor when we learned we’d be granted access to the real deal, the actual prop that served as Margaret’s wagon during the filming of 1883 which so heavily influenced and inspired this collection. It sounds a bit strange to be in awe of an inanimate object, but it had such a powerful presence, and in proximity to it, this wagon represented so much more than wood and wheels.

I’ll Be Darned
Resourcefulness is always a good look.
And, as it turns out, a make-do M.O. makes one heck of a style statement. Whether it’s by design (literally) or the product of after-market individualization, fashion is feeling a strong appreciation for aesthetic darning – patches, prominent stitching, and conspicuous mending – necessary or not. The trend is particularly prevalent on denim, the ultimate canvas for personalization, whether it’s jazzing up your jeans or adding some reinforcement to the worn elbows of your favorite jacket.
You can also expect these embellishments to find favor in high fashion as designers embrace ruggedchic in raw edges and perfect imperfections. Similarly, patchwork prints will have a presence, lending a unique vibe that’s simultaneously pieced-together and put-together.
Playing it Close to the Vest
If the Untamed collection has a pièce de resistance, it’s our ode to Elsa’s vest and everything it embodies.
Double D Ranch has long been associated with a dedication to detail; every piece is a promise that hours of imagination and even more hours of artistry is behind every stitch, every stud, and every hand-sewn bead. The vest itself is a nod to Elsa effectively permeating the barrier between two ostensibly opposed bands of people. The intricacy of embellishment, the 360-degree beadwork, is an homage to the era and the people of the Plains, something we immersed ourselves in through the exhibits of the Plains Indian Museum.
It’s the level of awe-inspiring craftsmanship that makes something swell inside you. It’s an heirloom-status statement piece, the kind of collector’s item you forgo the washing machine for. Because it’s not just an article of clothing, it’s a wearable reminder of who you are and the kind of character you’d want them to write for you; it’s believing in the good in every person and honoring the good of every people, and being wise enough to discern the difference.
It’s acceptance of all and yet a desire to stand out from the pack. It’s beauty and strength, it’s grace and grit, it’s woman and warrior.
