Basics Getting Started Beginning a game of Magician’s Quest is simple. Pick your name, gender, birthday, and name your school (if you like). The game will offer you a randomly generated appearance, but you can also design your own appearance if you want by saying “Let me pick!”. Once everything is configured the way you like it, select “No mistakes!” to begin your game. You’ll go through a very brief tutorial where you get some money, get shown your dorm room, and then told to find the school. Trying to move around in the game can be disorienting at first, so we suggest you use the in-game map. You can access it through the start button menu. This is also a good place to point out that this is a game you can play with either the stylus or the face buttons. Beyond that the only buttons you’ll absolutely have to use are the start button (which calls up a menu) and the select button (which lets you save quickly). Most of the time, you’ll probably find the face button

4

controls are most responsive for most of the game’s activities. Remember that B lets you run, X lets you use your magic wand (or whatever tool it’s transformed into), Y brings up the Magic Linguistics Menu, and A lets you pick up objects. R cycles your wand through its tool forms (shovel, butterfly net, fishing pole, watering can) or lets you put it away. Trying to play with the stylus can make some very basic activities seem excessively hard, but... there are also a few activities geared toward the stylus. None of these activities are timed so you’ll always have plenty of time to pull it out of your DS before starting on them, though.

Once at the school, you’ll want to bull through Principal Sol’s tutorial classes as rapidly as possible. They explain a lot of basic things about playing the game but are also a bit of a roadblock: you can’t take regular classes until the tutorial stuff is over. Once the tutorial classes are done, then the game begins and the world of Magician’s Quest opens up. Now your next challenge will be figuring out what to do in it.

INCANTATIONS

you with furniture and other prizes.

Invisibility

Connect Doors

[incantation] [see] [no] Item: Crystal After casting incantation, walk once in a circle around the Pond Ruins until all of the stones are lit up. Hold the Crystal and you’ll become invisible. Problem: you can’t interact with anything while invisible, so this incantation is very rarely useful.

[incantation] [come] [dorm room] Item: Sapphire When you’re playing or on a date with an NPC, take that character to the Gate of Beginning and End in your dorm. Chant the incantation while facing the door, then hold the Sapphire. Enter the door and you’ll be able to visit that NPC’s room.

Declare Love

Flower Rain

[incantation] [contest] [love] Item: Red Rose Go to Lover’s Point with an NPC you’re interested in dating around 4PM or 7 PM. Chant the incantation while the bell rings, then give the NPC a Red Rose. This will automatically increases the NPC’s romantic interest in you. Cast it on an NPC lots of times and it won’t be long before he or she wants to confess their love to you at Lover’s Point and go steady.

[incantation] [flower] [many] Item: Four Marguerites (any color) Chant the incantation while four Marguerites bloom around you. It can be useful to set up the Marguerites in a cross or box shape. It’s very rare for four Marguerites to bloom together like this so you’ll probably want to plant some yourself in a convenient location if you plan on casting this a lot.

Treasure Hunt Phantasm [incantation] [play] [(boy) or (girl)] [toilet] Note: Use the gender linguistic that matches the gender of your player character. Item: Red Tulip Enter the school bathroom for your in-game gender and face the stall on the left. Chant the incantation, then hold the Red Tulip in order to summon the Phantasm. The Phantasm is willing to pass along a lot of interesting rumors, but bear in mind that it won’t always be truthful and doesn’t really have your best interests at heart.

World Tree [incantation] [greeting] [tree] Face the entrance to the Mushroom Tree, chant the incantation, then enter. The World Tree will be waiting inside. Depending on how well you’re taking care of plants in your town, it may decide to reward

[incantation] [play] [treasure] Item: Gold Ore Go to the fountain in the plaza area. Chant the incantation, then hold the Gold Ore. Essentially, this spell makes a treasure chests appear in a random location underground. You’ll have to use the Treasure Hunt spell to find it. This can be a timeconsuming pain in the butt, so unless you’ve got time to kill you may just want to sell the Gold Ore instead.

Shooting Star Message [incantation] [star] [telegram] Item: Shooting Star Silver Chant the incantation while outdoors, then hold the Shooting Star Silver. When you successfully cast the incantation, an alphanumeric keyboard will appear. You can enter up to 8 characters for your shooting star message. It appears in the sky the first evening after you cast the incantation.

Vivian

runs Daisy’s Flowers which is open from 9 AM to 12 AM every day. Like the other shops, it spawns a random selection of items at fluctuating prices every day. The daily selection is three flowers, one seedling, one flower seed, and two pieces of garden furniture. Buying things works like it does elsewhere.

Vivian runs Vivian’s Boutique (unsurprisingly) and is generally the character you’ll interact with when purchasing clothes. Much like Harrows, Vivian’s Boutique offers a randomized selection each day with fluctuating prices. In any given day two one piece tops, two skirts, two pants, four shirts, three hats, and seven pairs of shoes become available. If you approach a piece of clothing you’re interested in and press A, Vivian will approach and ask if you want to buy it or try it on. If you opt to try it on, your character puts it on in a little cutscene and spins around so you can get an idea of how it will work. After trying the piece on, you have the option to purchase it or put it back. Also much like Harrows, the selection Vivian’s Boutique offers is so huge you may want to print out the clothing lists and start checking off things you’ve purchased.

Daisy You won’t spend tons of time with Daisy, but she’s very important to advancing a few of the game’s key mechanics. She

Where Daisy’s shop gets interesting is if you talk to her and ask her to buy berries. She sells all five types of berry seedlings, which always cost 100 Ritch each. You can buy as many seedlings as you like, too. It can get very lucrative to keep tabs on which types of berries have prices trending upward on the market, then go to Daisy’s and buy up lots of that kind of seedling. There’ll be more about the berry market elsewhere, but don’t forget about Daisy if you get into that part of the game.

Roley Roley runs the Mon Paris beauty salon, open from 9 AM to 12 AM daily. Go to Mon Paris and see Roley when you’re tired of your character’s hair and want to try something else. Each month you have the option of trying out one of three different randomly generated hairstyle and haircut combinations that cost 3600 Ritch each. Mon Paris mixes up the game’s girl and boy hairstyles freely, so try to visit once a month and see if something you really like shows up.

without being at the foot of a tree are the island and the Mushroom Tree, in fact. If you want a given kind of mushroom, then get a tree to grow in an area of the game map where that mushroom can spawn. The mushroom data in the back of the guide is indexed by area and time of day the mushroom will spawn, too. A guide to how to intepret that data, depending on time of year, is below. Of course, if you always want to have access to lots of different types of mushrooms all the time, focus on constantly planting trees everywhere on the map you can get them to grow and the rest tends to take care of itself.

Some flowers must be planted in particular areas and will die overnight if planted elsewhere. This applies mostly to the game’s valuable flowers (Black Marguerite, Orange May Lily, Pink Rose and Blue Tulip) and extremely valuable flowers (White Skullflower, Yellow Candyflower, Red Heartflower, Red Gemflower). The Marguerite and Skullflower needs to go into the graveyard, the Orange May Lily and Yellow Candyflower into the Mushroom Tree, the Pink Rose and Red Heartflower into the “Flower Forest,” and the Blue Tulip and Red Gemflower into the cave. Bushes can hold their berries on the vine for about two days, then they’ll just disappear. Cat Sith shows up every three days. A good way to manage this mechanic is just to use Cat Sith’s visiting days as days for managing your berry crops. To avoid berry loss, just pluck all of your berries on Cat Sith days. Plant the ones that aren’t valuable enough to sell or convert them into remedies.

While the rewards of investing in berries are obvious, the rewards of investing in lots of trees are more nebulous. For trees, your direct reward for investing in them is mushrooms. You can’t plant mushrooms ordinarily but random amounts of a season and location’s given types spawn at certain times of day at the foot of trees in the area. The only two areas in the game where mushrooms will spawn A Hardcore Gamer Elite Guide

The reward for investing in flowers, and to a lesser extent trees and other plants, is something that concerns the next section. Many species of bugs only spawn if an appropriate plant is growing in their territory. What counts as an “appropriate plant” is usually a flower but for some species can be a tree or even a bush. So if you want to make sure you catch a certain bug while it’s in season, look up where it spawns in the bug data at the back of the guide and then go to town planting flowers, bushes, and trees (as appropriate) in that area until it shows up.
