“Ar t is not what you see, but what you make others see. ” Edgar Degas
In this, his first solo exhibition, Ian has produced a unique and powerful collection of figurative paintings. He says, “ O ver the last few years, I ’ ve been developing a series of figure paintings dealing with issues relating to male psycholog y in the modern world, such as feelings of isolation and anxiety.”
Using memor y and spontaneity, he is inviting the viewer to share the experience of both strength and vulnerability of the figure in elements of the landscape. Also present, is the emotional connection between human beings, shar ing thoughts, feelings and offering support.
is collection of work is painted exc lusivel y in oil as Ian enjoy s its phy sic alit y and strength of colour. For him, there is also a tactile, sensual quality to it that is unmatched by any other media.
“
e solit ude and loneliness sug gested in some of his figurative w orks is alleviated and t ransformed with a sense of hope and positivity through the use of a subtle but confident colour palette and thoughtful composition. ese are st riking and singularly beautiful paintings.” Jane Frame, Galler y Director.
Ian attended Glasgow School of Art, graduating in Drawing and Painting in 2000 with a BA (Hons) Fine Art Painting, with a Distinction in Historical and Critical Studies.
Since then, he has exhibited in open exhibitions inc luding the RSA, RGI and Paisley Art Institute as well as several private galleries. He has work in collections in the UK, France, Germany, Italy and the USA.
