Michael G Clark PAI, RSW winter tradition: With the colder weather, I love any excuse for roast potatoes and drinking Claret image: Winter, View from my Studio. Oil on linen, 40 x 40cm.

winter tradition: Every year since I can remember, as the clock chimes midnight on Christmas Eve, one of us in my family recites the poem ‘Christmas’, by Sir John Betjeman. Aptly, one of the paintings I am exhibiting is entitled, ‘Chime’.

image: Chime. Oil on canvas, 100 x 100cm.

Simon Rivett

winter tradition: Listening to or attending a good carol service, preferably with lots of descant. Sounds a bit pretentious, but I don’t care!

image: The Water of Leith, Dean Village. Oil on linen, 40 x 40cm.

image: Yellow door, Abersoch. Acrylic on canvas, 30 x 30cm.

Euan McGregor PAI winter tradition: A Boxing Day game of tennis with mulled wine, no matter the weather. Ian Neill winter tradition: Going for a walk on Christmas morning with my wife Janet. image: Two Figures Searching No 9. Oil on canvas, 76 x 60cm.

Sarah Knox

winter tradition: Relishing the evenings when there's a howling gale outside and I'm with my family and our golden lab, Bonnie, sprawled on the sofa - all warmed by a roaring fire.

image: Arc of winter light. Oil on canvas, 41 x 41cm.

Charles Jamieson MFA, PAI, PPAI

winter tradition: Planning our Spring and Summer travels. (Admittedly, they aren't very wintery but it's what we do in the winter).

Alan James McLeod

winter tradition: We always enjoy a trip to London early on in the season to see the Christmas lights and wonderful window displays. It gets us in the mood for the season. There's also an embargo on roast dinners in December until the 25th, makes it even more delicious.

image: Gardens of Nineveh. Gouache and metal leaf on paper and board, 83 x 73cm.

Christian Moore

winter tradition: For many years, we’ve watched the BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice as a family. I have no idea how it started and I know the story isn't remotely Christmassy, but there you have it.

image: The pilgrimage. Cold cast bronze with sand and mineral paint on hessian, 60 x 70cm.

Esther Donaldson SSA winter tradition: My favourite winter tradition is going to the Edinburgh Botanical Gardens Light Trail. Hedgerow. Acrylic on canvas, 102 x 64cm.

winter tradition: Since our kids were youngsters, we go every Christmas Eve to the cinema as a family. We follow this with a carry out meal, whatever is near and open. Our kids are in their twenties now and still up for it.

image: Urban harmony from The Crags. Mixed media on wood 28 x 30cm.

Chris Nugent

Jeanie Laub

winter tradition: I think it would have to be “Samhain", a Pagan festival originating from ancient Celtic spiritual tradition.

image: The Sideshow no 6, (inspired by Nightmare Alley 1947). Pastel, 30 x 40cm.

Lesley Skeates

winter tradition: My favourite thing is to paint outside, especially in the snow on a bright, sunny day. I have to paint really quickly before I get too cold, or the light goes. It’s quite a challenge!

image: Lakeside, Autumn, Dundas Estate. Oil on panel, 30 x 30cm.
