Dear Residents,
Summer! It arrives this month and heralds my favorite time of the year. School is out, or soon will be, and possibilities for fun seem endless. What are your plans for a summer vacation? Trips around the country, or even the globe, are amazing and something to look forward to, for sure. But even if vacations are not in the plans for this summer, we live in a place that is a vacation spot for many others and for good reason! Be sure to read the letter from our mayor Kathy Ward regarding the trolleys that will start Memorial Day weekend. The beaches. They’re just a few miles away and we probably drive right by them most days. Hiking trails are plentiful and as the weather heats up, we’re lucky enough to have our wonderful Talega pools. Being inland, “June gloom” doesn’t affect us. This month’s feature family, the Huegs, love to take their adopted dogs out on the many trails that surround our neighborhoods. Be sure to read their story and consider contributing to the non-profit program that Liz started, OC Shelter Partners. Music and food festivals abound this time of year and there is certainly something for everyone. It’s easy to take for granted the beauty and fun to be had right outside our door. Make sure to take a peek at our calendar of events inside to scope out some of the great happenings around our area this month. We’re always looking for new families to feature, or interesting stories about our community to share. Have a great recipe? Email it to Joanna Larson (Jlarson@bestversionmedia.com) and we would love to print it. Do you have a club that invites new members? We will post it on our community bulletin board. Have a blog with great tips or insights? Let us share it. This magazine is about you and for you. Let us know how we can make it great. Happy Father’s Day to all the Talega Dads, Grandpas and Uncle Dads! I look forward to hearing from you,

In the Neighborhood with the Hueg Family BY SARAH STOKES | PHOTOS BY KATIE MORROW PHOTOGRAPHY
O
nce upon a time, receiving a handwritten letter from a secret admirer could herald a very romantic beginning. In the case of Eric and Liz, receiving an instant message from an anonymous user amounted to much the same thing. The couple met when AOL Instant Messenger was a relatively new and fun way to communicate. “My username at the time looked a little bit like Lizard Head. And it’s what my brother called me,” Liz explains. “I was actually on Messenger with my brother when this anonymous message popped up saying, ‘Hey, Lizard Head’ and it was Eric.” The pair hit it off. They went on a date and the rest, as they say, is history. The couple married in 2000 and moved to the Caprizi neighborhood in Talega ten years ago. Eric grew up in Dana Point and the couple spent a lot of time in the area when visiting his parents. Says Liz, “We always loved San Clemente and knew we would end up here. The homes were really well designed and looked different. We were lucky to find a house with an amazing ocean view, too.” The couple have a daughter, Ella, who is seven years old and attends Our Savior Lutheran School. Liz also volunteers at the school and is currently the PTF President. “Ella is an avid soccer player. She plays AYSO and the UK International Leagues,” says Liz.

TALEGA LIFE

UK International is a supplemental program through AYSO that brings young players from the United Kingdom to the United States as coaches. The family has hosted several coaches over the past few years. “We’ve had one from Brazil and another from Scotland. Last year, we had a young man named Nathan from London,” Liz says. “Now Ella can’t wait to go see Nathan and his family in England. These kids are really good and it’s been a great experience.” Volunteering is clearly a passion for Liz. A little over a year ago, she founded an amazing program called OC Shelter Partners. OCSP is a shelter intervention program that is based out of the Orange County Animal Services Shelter in Orange. “I have been rescuing animals for over 20 years,” explains Liz. “An intervention/prevention program had gotten started in LA and a group of rescuers here got together and talked to them. I was asked if I would be interested in heading up a similar program. We put together some parameters and sent it to the county. We were up and running in 60 days. All the right people were involved at the right time.” The program is completely independent and run by donations. It helps families keep their pets in times of crisis by offering resources such as vetting, food and training. If a pet can no longer stay in a home, the program networks with a wide network of reputable OC rescues so the pet never has to enter the shelter.
www.bestversionmedia.com
Liz and the program have been featured in a few news articles and she was recently honored by the OC Register as one of the 100 Most Influential People in Orange County. In their first year, OC Shelter Partners helped save over 1,000 pets. Heading up a program like OC Shelter Partners demands a lot of time and attention, but Liz and Eric make spending time together as a family a priority. They often visit Liz’s family in the Sacramento area, where Liz grew up. They’re avid Angels fans and go to as many baseball games as they can every year. The family also loves to go kayaking in Dana Point Harbor, have dinner on the beach, and walk the local hiking trails with their dogs, Sterling (a 13-year-old American Eskimo,) Violet (an eight-year-old Pomeranian,) and Jasmine (a four-year-old German Shepherd). Not to be forgotten, the family also has a one-yearold cat named BB8, a graduate of the bottle feeder program Liz manages through OC Shelter Partners. They also make Comic Con in San Diego into an annual family vacation. “Eric collects Star Wars memorabilia. That’s his passion,” says Liz. “Comic Con was originally a weekend away for him but then we had Ella and he wanted to share that experience with her,” Now the family all goes together. “It’s a really fun family vacation. We have a blast walking around, looking at things. It’s really fun people watching.”
The event is something that fits right in with Eric’s profession. He is an award winning video producer and writer for clients such as Showtime Networks, SONY, Avery Dennison and Taco Bell. Buying their Talega home is a story that also just seems to fit. “We went to look at the model homes one day and Eric said, ‘I would move for this house. Too bad it’s not for sale.’ Then the salesman came in and said it was going on the market the next day.” As it seemed to when they met, things just fell into place. The Hueg family couldn’t be happier with the result. With Eric’s family close by, they are able to spend a lot of time together, doing family dinners and outings. The neighborhood itself is also a lot of fun. “We have a mom’s night out every couple months, and an annual, all day July 4th celebration where we play games, throw water balloons and BBQ twice, lunch and dinner!” says Liz. “We are also going on our eighth year of a very competitive league of fantasy football on our street. We love our neighborhood. There are tons of kids and great families. We always joke that we are like our own little village,” says Liz. “Ella has known most of these kids her entire life. They are growing up together. You can’t beat that.” For more information on OC Shelter Partners or to find out how you can help, visit www.ocshelterpartners.org continued»»

TALEGA LIFE
From City Hall: BY MAYOR KATHY WARD
I
t is a great pleasure to be included in Talega Life Magazine and have an opportunity to share city news with residents of Talega of San Clemente. I am excited to include information on the City’s upcoming trolley launch. This new summer weekend trolley service will launch this Memorial Day weekend. A ribbon cutting will take place on Friday, May 26th and more information on the specifics will be announced by the City at www.san-clemente.org. The trolley, named ‘San Clemente Trolley,’ will be made available to riders at no charge. The trolley has an open air (windowless) concept that will make it easily identifiable as a total of three trollies cruise throughout town. Each one will have destination areas denoted on the exterior, and will say ‘Free Rides’ so residents and visitors know the service is complimentary. The trolleys will travel along the coastal area of San Clemente and pick people up at designated stops every 15 minutes. They will be available on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Initially the trolley was approved for three days, but at the April 18th City Council meeting, we added a fourth day. The hours of operation are 12:00 noon to 10:00 p.m. on Thursday and Friday; 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Saturday; and 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday. Three trolleys will circulate along a designated route that spans from the Pier to North Beach where the North Beach Farmers Market recently made its debut.
The City Council selected a design and color scheme in red and black, thematic of the San Clemente Tritons. The funding for the trolleys come from a $1.2 million grant from the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) which the city applied for. The grant will cover most of the costs for the service for seven years. The grant requires the city to fund a portion of the trolley service at $146,000 over the seven-year grant period. The Friends of San Clemente Foundation also provided a generous donation of $10,000 towards the funding of the capital costs of the trolley. I hope to see you on the trolley! If you have any questions or concerns, please email Kathy Ward at WardK@san-clemente.org or call (949) 361-8322 to schedule a meeting. HOURS OF OPERATION Friday, May 26-Monday, September 4 • Thursdays 12 noon - 10 p.m. • Fridays 12 noon - 10 p.m. • Saturdays 10 a.m. - 10 p.m. • Sundays 10 a.m. - 8 p.m.
Additional holiday services: • Memorial Day: Monday, May 29 • Independence Day: Tuesday, July 4 • Labor Day: Monday, September 4 *Hours and days are subject to change. Please visit the City’s website for the latest Trolley news.

Mind/Body Health
Is it You or Your Circumstances? BY PAULA SHAW
When we are in a bad place we lose sight of the fact that it’s our circumstances that are awful, not us.
O
k, it’s June. So how are you feeling about your body in a bathing suit, or even shorts? Uh Oh. Am I hearing some groans?
If you’re like most men and women, something about your body is not pleasing you as you read these words. So rather than running out and shopping madly for the latest, brightly colored mumu; rather than obsessing about your last sugar binge, take a deep breath and let me reveal to you the words of wisdom that my friend, Tammy, once spoke to me. Words that, while they didn’t trim inches off my thighs, did change my life.
doomed, hopeless, pathetic, et cetera. We lose sight of the fact that those are feelings that we’re harboring, not who we are. Whatever you are going through, whether it’s a plummeting bank account, a muffin top in your bikini, misery in your career or relationship, feeling isolated, or like everyone else has figured it out except you, no matter what you feel, they are just feelings. They are your circumstances but they are not you! If they were you, you would only be capable of having one feeling but in reality, at any given moment you can go from joyful to sad or mad to glad. Emotional states can change and that’s the good news. Why is this powerful knowledge? Circumstances are mutable. You can change them much more easily than you can change yourself.
Those words may not sound like they have the capacity to part the Red Sea to you, but for me, on that day, they were huge. Read them again: “It’s just circumstances, it’s not who you are.”
So if your summer body isn’t pleasing you, don’t get hopelessly sad or mad, just choose to change those circumstances. Adopt a new food plan, go to the gym, or add running into your schedule. We are not doomed to feel negative feelings forever. All we need do is change the circumstances that are producing them. This is sometimes more easily said than done because sometimes feelings can become a deep, dark hole that you can’t seem to climb out of. Sometimes you need help changing your circumstances. If that is you, please call me for a complimentary 30- minute chat. Let’s see if together we can shift the elements of your story and get the circumstances of your life to be some kind of wonderful…or at least get you a beach-ready body.
When we are in a bad place we lose sight of the fact that it’s our circumstances that are awful, not us. We think we are scared,

One day I was bemoaning my dire financial straits to her (God only knows how she put up with my whining for what seemed like hours!) But then, you know how it is: when a sister is hurting, you sit and you listen, right? After my lengthy tirade, she looked at me calmly and serenely said, “It’s just circumstances, Paula. It’s not who you are.”

Q.
What are the main differences between all of the various sunscreens on the market?
A.
All sunscreens can be divided into two main categories: chemical barrier and physical barrier. In general, physical barrier sunscreens are safer, more water resistant, more effective, and have little to no absorption in your skin and body. The main protective agent in physical barrier sunscreens is zinc and titanium. This does not mean your skin will turn white, as these can still be rubbed in, and they are effective from the second they are applied to your skin. UV rays are actually reflected off your skin and are not absorbed. Chemical barrier sunscreens use anywhere from 8-15 active agents that together protect against most of the UV range. These chemicals must absorb into your skin before they shield you from UV rays, which is why they must be applied approximately 30 minutes before sun exposure.
Q.
How often should sunscreen be applied?
A.
Because we live in such a sunny locale, it is smart to wear a baseline

sunscreen every day. Many skin care lines make daily sunscreens that both protect and moisturize your skin. They should be the first layer you apply, and makeup can be applied over the top. You should apply another layer before any prolonged sun exposure, preferably a physical barrier sunscreen.
cells live. If you have been on a product like this but wish to jumpstart the change, a chemical peel is a great way to enhance your result. The VI Peel does a great job of eliminating sun and age spots, and correcting superficial irregularities of the skin. Downtime is only a matter of hours, and the result lasts for several months.
Q. Why do scars darken in the sun?
Dr. Song can be reached in his office at (949) 701-4454, or through his website: www.kylesongmd.com.
A.
Scars are particularly sensitive to UV rays until they are fully mature (approximately one year.) The immature cells in the scar responsible for pigmentation are called melanocytes, and when they are stimulated by sun exposure, they will release dark pigment into the scar. This skin darkening is difficult to lighten, and this is why it is always recommended to protect any new scar with sunscreen for the first year.
Q. How can I get rid of dark sun spots on my face?
A.
Skin care lines with hydroquinone will help reduce the pigmentation in the sun and age spots on your face. Hydroquinone is a type of bleaching agent that only works on pigmented areas of the skin, and it will not lighten the normal surrounding skin. It works best in combination with Retin-A, as it drives the hydroquinone to deeper skin levels where the pigment-producing
