SEPTEMBER 2016 3
Dear Talega Residents, Much to the dismay of my husband, I am never ready for summer to end. He (good naturedly) spent the last two months dodging the rest of us lazily eating breakfast as he ran out late for a meeting, or repeatedly closing his office door to noisy kids rushing in and out of the house all afternoon, or jealously watching as I packed the kids and I up for another impromptu afternoon at the beach. He, for sure, is happy to have some order back to his life.

Without fail, every year while we lived in New England, the “fall blues” would hit us both as summer was coming to end. It wouldn’t be long before our late evening cookouts and days spent outside would be replaced by (really) cool, fall air and windows that would soon have to be closed for months. Today, I am infinitely appreciative to be able to send the kids back to school knowing there will still be beach days, bonfires and cookouts, and the rare opportunity to close the windows at night will be welcomed. Fall, like New Year’s, for me is a time to reprioritize, readjust and maybe learn something new. I learned quite a lot when I met this month’s feature couple, David & Pamela Jackson. They have turned their passion for the ocean into a new business venture. Their breadth of knowledge is admirable, and led them to publish their first children’s book, “Ocean Adventures with Jax.” Happy Fall!

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT
San Clemente Christian School BY DR. NICKY MAGNUSON, PRINCIPAL OF SCCS
Q: Tell me about San Clemente Christian School. We are a private Christian school serving grades TK through 10, with additional high school grades being added each year. We’ve built a legacy over the past 30 years, educating and nurturing students in an academically rigorous and spiritually centered environment. SCCS has been a beacon of light to thousands of families and offers a safe and loving place for students and families to thrive. Each day we provide our students with a strong and balanced education while helping them to develop into individual leaders who love God! Q: What makes SCCS so unique? Our philosophy brings the “boutique school” concept to life and allows teachers to honor and meet each child’s individual strengths, giftings, and needs. We want every student to know they are beautifully made, priceless, valued, and amazingly capable. Our S.T.E.A.M. approach to project based learning encourages 21st century critical thinking and problem solving skills while encouraging discovery and creativity; all supported by state of the art technology, leadership curriculum and enrichment opportunities in every class.
Q: I know that SCCS’s plans to move to San Clemente have been impeded. What happened? Because there is no Christian school that serves grades TK-12 in San Clemente, and over 70% of our families call San Clemente home, we were determined to relocate to this community! An incredible building was identified, a lease was signed and fundraising efforts were well underway to make this huge historical transition. Unfortunately, weeks before the anticipated move-in date, our former board of directors suspended the move due to unexpected and insurmountable building costs. Q: What is the current plan for the future and relocation of SCCS? The desire for a TK-12 private Christian school in San Clemente confirms our efforts to make the move and serve the community at large. Our current board of directors is determined to support this vision for relocation and is busy collaborating with various committees to identify a new location that would be suitable for our campus. This is a very exciting time! I would encourage anyone interested in learning more to visit our website at sanclementechristianschool.com.

ORTHODONTICS
The Truth About
Flossing BY DR. TAYLOR OLSEN, DDS, MSD
Y
ou may have read the recent article that claims that the benefit of flossing your teeth is a myth! Wait a minute, is it actually true? Can we all stop flossing, or at least stop feeling guilty for not flossing? Before you do anything rash, let’s look at two things: • The source. The story came from the Associated Press (AP.) It’s up to you if you want to believe the media, but keep in mind that the AP is not a peer-reviewed journal that regularly reviews dental research. • The response. The American Dental Association quickly discounted this story (it’s a ‘story’ and not a ‘study’) and reaffirmed the importance of flossing to reach areas that your toothbrush cannot.
www.bestversionmedia.com
Another thing to consider: dentistry is one of the only professions I am familiar with that actively tries to put itself out of business! If you don’t brush your teeth, you’ll end up with cavities. If you don’t floss your teeth, you’ll end up with periodontal disease. Both of these conditions end up costing you both time in the dental chair and money. Alternatively, if you brush and floss regularly you can use that extra time and money on things you’d rather do. So before you sell your Johnson & Johnson stock and buy shares of Waterpik®, just remember the age old adage: you only have to floss the teeth you want to keep! The Importance of Play BY DR. DUSTINE REY
S
tuart Brown, M.D, author of Play: How It Shapes the Brain, Opens the Imagination, and Invigorates the Soul, asserts that play is an essential component of success for both adults and children, noting that the majority of Silicon Valley corporations include ping-pongs tables, slides instead of stairs, and game rooms. Corporate human resource departments have found that more opportunities for employees to play equate to better innovation, greater wellness, and an increase in productivity. With an increased emphasis on play in the corporate sector, play in childhood needs greater attention. Many researchers contend that the decline of childhood free play is
linked to the rise in anxiety, depression and vision disorders. Play has many benefits for optimal cognitive, physical, and emotional/ social development. With a sharp rise in sensory-related issues and anxiety among children, the need for play has never been greater. Parents and educators can address these concerns by providing ample opportunities for play that involves movement and sensoryrelated activities. The following are a few suggestions: • Get Outside- The value of playing outside in nature can’t be overestimated. Studies indicate that experiences in nature build cognitive capacities, enhance mental functions and increase the immune system. Outdoor play helps children grow strong, healthy, and learn to assess risks. It also counteracts obesity issues facing many children today. • Make Time for Play- As parents, we are the biggest advocates for children’s learning. Make sure they have as much time as possible to play during the day to promote cognitive, language, physical, social, and emotional development.

Many researchers contend that the decline of childhood free play is linked to the rise in anxiety, depression and vision disorders. The imagination forms the basis for thought and because the young brain naturally seeks symbolic experiences, play fosters an impressive array of skills that are necessary for school success, including: taking another’s perspective, regulating one’s emotions, taking turns with peers, sequencing the order of events, and recognizing one’s independence from others. Children who engage regularly in imaginative play are more creative than their peers and often leaders in their peer group. Corporations such as JPL have noted that the most brilliant engineers are the ones who had the most imaginative play when they were young children. Play and learning go hand-in-hand; they are not separate activities, but are intertwined. Play is a context for a child’s learning. Play provides rich learning opportunities and leads to a child’s success and ability to regulate his/her emotions. If you see your child playing at school, take comfort in knowing that learning is occurring.
Model playfulness with your children. One of the greatest gifts you can enjoy is the insight into your child’s thoughts through the process of play. Have fun and let your imagination create and discovery new possibilities. According to Stuart Brown, this simple act will invigorate your mind and allow you to see new perspectives. Dr. Rey is an adjunct professor at The Graduate School of Education and Psychology at Pepperdine University and the founder/executive director of The Gratitude Garden Preschool in San Clemente. FEATURE STORY
David & Pamela Jackson: “Blue Is the New Green!” BY JOANNA LARSON | photographs by JAMIE B PHOTOGRAPHY
T
alega residents Pamela and David Jackson have taken their deep, abiding love and respect for nature and were inspired to start a company in 2014, aimed to educate and empower others to preserve our oceans and its inhabitants. Pamela, a self-described “Cephalopod Queen,” received a degree in Aquarium & Aquaculture Science from Saddleback College, at the time the only hands-on aquaculture program in the state. She has worked as an Aquarist at the Ocean Institute and the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium in San Pedro, and has given countless talks and lectures on ocean related subjects. David has a business management degree from Purdue University, and also attended University of Wisconsin and Northwestern University studying corporate finance. He worked as a personal financial consultant before opening his own investment advisory management firm. Today, he is the businessman behind their startup company, EverythingOceans®, motivated with the mission to “engage, educate and empower” people about our oceans. As the scientist and educator of the two, Pamela’s love of the ocean is contagious. Her expansive knowledge motivated her to write and publish her first children’s book, Ocean Adventures with Jax, in 2016. Written from the viewpoint of a young bottlenose dolphin and geared at introducing children (grades K-3) to the fascinating world under the sea, the book was just awarded the prestigious gold seal from “The Mom’s Choice Awards.” We sat down and discussed David and Pam’s new venture of starting a business in their 50s and life in Talega.
What made you start EverythingOceans® together? D: The idea came to us when Pam was working as an aquarist at the Ocean Institute and was giving countless presentations on the different creatures housed there. We realized we could reach a more expansive audience if we made the content internet-based. Pam is so curious. She is a born educator and can really dial in on something, observe it, learn from it and convey it to others well. What exactly does an aquarist do? P: Everything from checking on the animals to preparing their food, treating them if they’re sick, and putting them in quarantine to acclimate them as a species when they first come into the facility. also monitored and maintained the water quality in the tanks. To me, I was doing the ultimate job every single day— wearing shorts and a t-shirt—working and playing with animals. It’s truly my passion. Do you keep aquariums at home? P: Surprisingly, we do not. When you’re working as an aquarist and busy taking care of animals and tanks eight or more hours a day, the last thing you want to do is take care of your own tank when you get home! Prior to moving here, you lived in Colony Cove. What brought you to Talega? P: After many months of searching for a new home we decided on Talega. Here we enjoy the fabulous warm weather and cool ocean breezes. We found a house in Mirador with a wonderful view of open space, the hills and nature. The amenities in Talega are unmatched and we love to walk the trails, swim laps at the resortstyle pools, shoot baskets and play tennis at the courts or golf close by. Do you like to travel? Have you been on any recent trips? D: We love to go to Hawaii to snorkel. Pam will stay out there for five hours or more. Also we love the Yucatan in Mexico. Recently we went to Las Vegas and stayed at the Bellagio to see their summer exhibit “Under The Sea” which featured two, 1,500 gallon tropical aquariums. Pam studied the tanks and we spoke with the curator of the exhibit, which is connected with the shark reef aquarium at Mandalay Bay. P: The exhibit was created by one of my favorite shows on TV called Tanked. The guys were commissioned by the Bellagio to do this walk through exhibit. To us, the strange thing was that here are all of these people from around the world looking Visiting Angels at Dana Point Harbor
at this huge exhibit and there was no signage explaining the animals swimming around in the tanks or coral reefs. Literally there was no education connected to that exhibit! So I called the curator and said, ‘I would love to help you with the education part. It would make the experience so much more meaningful and valuable for guests, and for the hotel to be able to leverage the opportunity to stand out as an educational resort as well.’ You recently put on a presentation for kids at the Talega Swim and Athletic Club. How did that go? P: We had a great outcome! I read my book, the kids were able to color in coloring pages from the book and we had a visit from Jax the Dolphin. Each child received a certificate with a gold seal stating they completed the workshop and titling them “Ocean Champions.” Where did your passion for the ocean and from educating others come from? P: I grew up frequenting an Pamela holding aquarium in Chicago and became Ocean Adventures with Jax fascinated with marine life. Talking about the oceans and sharing my knowledge with others just makes my heart sing. Although we don’t have children of our own, we are dedicated and spend much of our time teaching children about the oceans and the animals that call the ocean home. The oceans need to survive in order for us to even be alive. I always say ‘Blue is the new green!’ D: It’s really important for us to engage and educate the next generation. Kids really do want to learn about and also care for the environment. Will you write more books? P: You bet! At the end of Ocean Adventures with Jax, Jax finds a golden key at a shipwreck and falls asleep wondering what the key is for. I already know the next five stories. I’m working them out in my head now! Speaking at Saddleback College’s Presidents’ Roundtable 2013

reakfast is the perfect time to incorporate as many vitamins and minerals as possible in order to jumpstart your day. If you skip breakfast, you’ll be more susceptible to the temptation of fast food or equally unhealthy choices come lunchtime. Giving your body plenty of fiber, vitamins, and protein before you leave your house in the morning is a sure way to offset cravings later in the day. Time, however, is always an issue when it comes to this crucial meal. Between busy kids’ schedules, early meetings, and a beloved sleep cycle, finding the time to prepare and consume a healthy breakfast is easier said than done. Enter the smoothie: a quick, nutritious way to start your day. The recipe below contains ample protein, fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, omega-6 fatty acids, and various other nutrients. Simply plug in your blender, compile the ingredients, and voila! Nutrition in a cup. Between the protein powder and chia seeds, this smoothie contains roughly 30 grams of protein, meaning it can easily pass as a meal. The berries and banana offer an ample serving of antioxidants to begin your day, along with the kale or spinach. Chia seeds contain a whopping 11 grams of fiber, which is approximately 40% of your daily value. Fiber keeps you fuller longer, so by the time lunch comes around, you’ll be able to make smart choices without the interruption of hunger or cravings. If you use a fresh banana along with fresh berries, add some ice to the mix in order to thicken and cool it.

Returns to Talega By SUE PRESCOTT
P
rescott Cotillions is excited to begin our third season in the Talega Community. We offer a family-oriented program instructing youths from 2nd through 8th grades in social interaction, etiquette, and dance, taught by our Professional Ballroom Dance Instructor Leo Cendejas of Ballroom is Back! Dance Studio. We feel we are unique in that the individual member receives the instruction and the entire family is welcome to observe and interact during the session. The program is designed to give children selfconfidence and the ability to properly relate with peers and adults— important life skills that cannot be underestimated. It is our intent for it to be a fun night out for the family at the picturesque Talega Golf Club. Beverage service is available. The membership is grouped by grade. The younger grade members are taught basic skills, which are supplemented and expanded upon for higher-grade levels. We start with the fundamentals, such as the proper way to shake a hand and how to introduce yourself. Dance lessons include traditional social dances and tips on how to be comfortable at school dances.
Sue Prescott and family
This is not your typical manners class. Each of our meetings combine traditional lessons in manners and etiquette with topical contemporary subject matter such as: proper social media interaction and use, party invitations and response practice, and issues of the day that your child may encounter. They will have the self-confidence to make the correct choices in social situations. We meet six times per season (September 2016 through March 2017). Our Opening Night is Wednesday, September 14th. This is an invitation only opportunity, so please contact our local General Chair Luciana Laszewski at (949) 632-7122 or lucianaml@cox.net, to express your interest and for further details.
Our Supper Club is offered for the 6th through 8th grade members. Each meeting involves a dining tutorial relating food to different social situations. Our lessons begin with how to correctly serve hors d'oeuvres combined with social conversations. The subsequent lessons present additional skills, culminating with a three-course sit down dinner teaching both American and Continental dining styles.

HOME APPRAISALS
REAL ESTATE HAS A ‘RESET’ BUTTON:
Uncle Sam Can Be Generous! BY M.VICKY WILSON
Y
ou’re probably wondering what the title of this article means. Read on, you'll be glad did. Why? Because there are strong odds that you or someone you know will be inheriting property someday and you will want to know how to deal with it. There are approximately 76.4 million 'Baby Boomers' according to the 2014 US Census. Many of us have one or both of our parents still living, maybe in your childhood home. Or perhaps Aunt Sally passed away and left you her rental house. She wasn't married but now you find yourself having to deal with Uncle Sam. Time to call your local appraiser. It can save you thousands in taxes!
There is a tax benefit that can seriously help minimize any taxes that might be owed when inheriting real estate. It's referred to as "stepped-up basis". This new basis is determined by having a professional appraiser provide a 'date of death' valuation. For example, assume your parents bought a home in 1973 for $32,500. If you inherit that home, you have the opportunity to 'reset' the value as of the date of their passing (the passing of the last surviving parent). In today's market the home might be worth $600,000. Obtaining this 'new' or 'stepped-up" valuation means that whenever you decide to sell the home you will only be subject to taxes on any gain over the $600,000, not your parents original cost basis of $32,500. Say you eventually sell the home for $650,000. You can pay capital gains tax on $617,500
Whether you are buying, selling, divorcing, inherited a property, need a pre-listing assessment or just want to know the value of your home, call My Value Pro! Take advantage of our popular Pre-Listing Assessment by mentioning this ad for $50 OFF our regular price of $297. Bring the ‘back end’ of the sales transaction to the beginning! There are strong odds that you or someone you know will be inheriting property someday and you will want to know how to deal with it. or $50,000. At a 15% capital gains tax rate that would either be $92,625 or $7,500. Which do you prefer? The same is true for Aunt Sally's rental, only it goes one better by resetting the depreciation she was taking on the property as well. It's best to get the 'date of death' valuation completed as soon as you feel ready. But, I've completed these types of assignments for clients where the value sought dated back many years. Hiring a professional appraiser can give you peace of mind that you are receiving the full benefit of the inheritance your loved ones wanted you to have. Of course, you'll want to consult a tax professional and possibly an estate or probate attorney for more tax and legal advice. It all starts with a proper valuation. Q&A
WITH DR. KYLE SONG BY DR. KYLE SONG
Q: What is “Flash Breast Augmentation”? A: Flash Recovery Breast Augmentation® refers to a surgical technique that is aimed at reducing the recovery time and discomfort from breast augmentation surgery by simply following fundamental principles of thoughtful pre-operative planning and sound surgical technique. When surgery is done with precision and care, minimal inflammation occurs, resulting in less pain and a faster recovery for the patient. Typically, a patient can be back to normal activities within two to three days, driving within two days and back at work two to three days later. Q: How long before I can I begin picking up and carrying things again after breast surgery? A: Immediately! Because breast augmentation surgery is done in such a controlled manner— almost without a single drop of blood— inflammation is minimized and it is safe to begin picking up and carrying things as soon as you get home from surgery. Q: Are there any effective treatments for cellulite? A: Finally, yes! Cellfina is a FDA-approved, single-treatment, minimally-invasive, long-lasting solution to cellulite. This device treats the primary structural cause of cellulite to create a smooth skin surface on the buttocks and thighs. Results have been nothing short of incredible!
but are unsure if they are going to be able to reach their ideal weight. I think that it’s important to recognize both your ideal weight, and a realistic weight in which you can easily maintain given your normal activities and duties. Surgery is best done when you are 10-15 pounds heavier than this realistic weight. At that point surgeons can give you the right shape and contour, which will only be further enhanced when those last few pounds come off. Q: What is the easiest solution to improve my facial skin health? A: No question— HydraFacial. This is one of the more popular treatments offered in our office in which an aesthetician uses a finely focused, high pressure water vortex to cleanse, exfoliate and extract impurities from the skin. A selected mix of antioxidants, peptides and hyaluronic acid are then infused into the skin. Treatments take approximately 30 minutes and the results will be immediately apparent and last for about 30 days. Dr. Song can be reached in his office at (949) 701-4454, or through his website: www.kylesongmd.com.
Q: Should I lose weight before a tummy tuck surgery? A: It really depends on the patient. I routinely see women for abdominoplasty (ie.tummy tuck) consultations who state they would like to lose their baby weight www.bestversionmedia.com

September: Life Insurance Awareness Month According to a recent survey, 1 in 3 households would have immediate trouble paying living expenses if the primary wage earner died, and 40% haven't bought life insurance or more of it because they're unsure of how much or what type to buy. Did you know that life insurance can give you much more than protection for your most valuable asset? Properly selected life insurance can: • Control and manage all of your health costs in retirement. • Help manage your Social Security benefit. • Possibly lower your taxes by providing income that is not recognized by the IRS and Medicare. • Provide long-term care coverage.
