Family Focus Rethinking Homework BY DR. DUSTINE REY

THE VALUE of homework in the elementary school years is a contentious issue among parents. No-homework policies are being integrated into many American schools where the shift to Common Core curriculum has required educators to rethink how students spend their time and to what extent doing homework equates to actual learning. The past twenty-five years of educational research demonstrates a surprising conclusion: homework provides no measureable benefit at the elementary school level. Even more surprising is that premature and improper homework can hinder the development and academic growth of children under the age of twelve.

The relationship between homework and academic success varies among different grade levels. While homework has significantly positive benefits at the high school level, the benefit drops off for middle school. Dr. Etta Kralovec, Associate Professor and co-author of The End of Homework: How Homework Disrupts Families, Overburdens Children, and Limits Learning says, “There’s a huge philosophical divide between parents who want their kids to be very scheduled, very driven, and very ambitiously focused at school, those parents want their kids to do homework. Then there are the parents who want a more child-centered life with their kids, who want their kids to be able to explore different aspects of themselves, who think their kids should have free time. The research says the latter is the better option.” Children are at school seven or eight hours a day, comprising a full work day. To what extent should our children simply be kids after school?

Having time to

be a kid,

play with family and neighbors, watch parents cook, and help with house responsibilities are invaluable moments of childhood.

According to research, homework can generate a negative impact on a child’s attitude toward school. Young children need to be connected and intrinsically motivated within the learning process. We do not want to send the message that learning is a chore. Instead, young children should have fun while learning. Most children love school, approaching class with wide eyes and enthusiasm. Yet, somewhere around age seven, school starts to become work and that is when we see learning interests diminish.

Moreover, research indicates premature homework can damage personal relationships in the long-term. Homework is meant to reinforce the relationship between parents and children. However, with elementary school kids this can have the opposite effect. After a long day at school, an activity that is “work” is not what children want to do before going to bed. Often parents have to enforce homework which can interrupt the connection with home life. Another problem with elementary school homework is that it often takes time away from responsibilities at home as well as sleeping hours. Children need, on average, ten hours of sleep a day. For kids to be 100% the next day at school, they need to have a proper rest. Having time to be a kid, play with family and neighbors, watch parents cook, and help with house responsibilities are invaluable moments of childhood. Where is the balance between homework and being a kid? Are there conditions where homework actually provides a positive benefit for elementary age children? Read next month’s article to find out. Summer at 100 mph: Horseback riding in the Santa Ynez Mountains.

M

ost of the time driving is just a way to get to and from work, or for getting your kids to their after school activities. This summer, try to rediscover the joy of road tripping with fun weekend trips up and down the gorgeous California coast! Let the road take you to hidden gems along the way to your final destination, and don’t forget to take pictures of your travels and share them with your neighbors!

For the Long Haul: Solvang (3-4 hours north) So where is Solvang, and why does it have such a funny name? Solvang is a unique little town nestled in the Santa Ynez Mountains with an amazing history. It was founded in 1911 by a trio of Danish immigrants living in the midwest; Reverend Benedict Nordentoft, Reverend J. M. Gregersen, and Professor P. P. Hornsyld dreamed of creating a Danish community on the west coast. They saved and bought the tract of land that Solvang (which means “sunny field”) has thrived on for 105 years. Drive through the quaint, old-world architecture of the city; enjoy traditional and fusion Danish food; 8  TALEGA LIFE

Dip Down South: Balboa Park, San Diego Sunny San Diego is just an hour and a half south, and there is nothing like spending an afternoon wandering Balboa Park. As a San Diegan for about 12 years, I should know. Balboa park has just about everything anyone could ever want to cram into an afternoon (or weekend!). There is a selection of museums that explore science, art, sports, local history, photography, various cultures, and more. In the very same space, one can wander the various botanical gardens, watch street performers of all kinds, listen to the organ player every Sunday afternoon,

Nip up North: Griffith Park, Los Angeles Before we get started, I know. Los Angeles. Bustling city of lights, skyscrapers, crime, stars, smog, traffic, and more traffic. For the majority of Orange County residents, Los Angeles is the opposite of a relaxing family-friendly destination, and to that we say: Have you been to Griffith Park? Griffith Park is a giant 4,300 acre gift to the overpopulated city that is Los Angeles. Within Griffith Park is the Griffith Observatory, the Los Angeles Zoo, botanical gardens, the Autry National Center, pony rides, Travel Town Museum, Griffith Park Merry-Go-Round and hiking trails galore — not to mention the famed Hollywood sign! And if all of that weren’t enough to tempt you to brave the drive, most of the activities mentioned are either free or are inexpensive to experience. Los Angeles Zoo.

To Your Health Inertia BY JEANNIE MCCORMACK

HAVE YOU BEEN feeling like you need to incorporate more fit-

ness into your life? The motivation to start exercising may come at you from various directions: your energy level is lagging, the numbers on the scale are growing, your posture needs attention, your aches and pains are acting up, and your clothes fit too tightly. The body doesn't lie. We all know that making smart lifestyle choices and getting regular exercise are perhaps the two most important factors in staying healthy and aging well. But, what if you’ve fallen off your game? People take exercise off their list for so many reasons but the number one reason people have for not engaging in a regular exercise program is because they claim to not have enough time. Many want to exercise but are reluctant or afraid to start up again. If these are your reasons for letting fitness slide in your life, then perhaps I can ease your mind just a tad. Exercise doesn't have to be painful. You don't have to feel the burn, or go to the point of exhaustion. If you start a regular program and stick to it, your fitness level will most definitely improve. I always tell my clients to put their exercise clothes on and walk out the door and they are already halfway there! Action follows thought so set the intention first. Once you make it to your destination, give your full attention to your program for 20 minutes. Commit to 20 minutes of nonstop activity: no phones, no chatting and no breaks. Gradually increase your time to 30-60 minutes, depending on your chosen form. I love Pilates, and Pilates works! If you have a bad back, weak knees, are recovering from a serious illness or injury, are overweight, or consider using the remote as exercise, fear not; Pilates can be just what you need. Anybody can do Pilates. Joseph Pilates created his exercises — originally called

Contrology — to help revitalize and rehabilitate an ailing population. The first Pilates Reformer was used by soldiers recovering in a military hospital. The original Pilates equipment was fashioned from an army cot and bed springs and a pulley system was used to help injured soldiers build core strength. Mr. Pilates noted that the soldiers’ immune systems were enhanced and their spirits’ elevated once they incorporated Pilates into their lives. What the ancients knew by the heart, modern science has proven medically. So, if you are reluctant to start or get back to a fitness program, perhaps you can gain a bit of encouragement from those that have achieved restored vigor. It is never too late and you can never be too far gone. So set your intention, put your workout clothes on, and get out that door. Meet a friend for a walk, go to a class or hire a trainer. I believe in you. To your health! Jeannie Jeannie McCormack has been teaching movement (yoga, Pilates and barre) for 30 years. Visit www.desaprana.com or call (949) 443-1700 for more information.

Orthodontics What Am I Paying for? BY DR. TAYLOR OLSEN

I OFTEN HEAR people ask, “What is my orth-

odontic bill paying for?”

Are you paying for just the cost of the braces, or is there more to it? Let’s compare an orthodontist to a medical doctor. When we go to the doctor, we pay for his or her expertise. The same goes for visits to a physical therapist, chiropractor or an attorney. Your orthodontist goes through extensive years of training to become an expert in their field— four years of college, four years of dental school, and an additional 2-3 year residency to become an orthodontic specialist (I tell people that I finally finished school after the 23rd grade!) In addition to the educational investment of between $250,000-500,000.00, an orthodontist then has to build or buy a practice. But, beyond the expense of education and physical materials, a patient is investing in the expertise of the orthodontist and the time put in by him/her to investigate your particular mouth and

develop a treatment plan that will help you achieve your desired goals. Therefore, which provider you choose really matters; you don’t want just anyone, you want the best orthodontist. It’s interesting to note that in spite of the increasing cost of orthodontic education, the relative cost of orthodontics has decreased over the years. Thirty years ago, when most of the parents in this community had braces, orthodontics cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $3,000. In 30 years, the cost of orthodontics has increased a mere 50-65%. How is that possible? Have home or automobile prices only gone up 50% in the last 30 years? Check your mortgage statement and it will likely be more than 3-5 times what your parents paid. Improvements in materials have allowed orthodontic treatment to become much more efficient, which ultimately reduces your orthodontic bill. That evolution has allowed most patients to pay for a full two years of orthodontics for less than one or two mortgage payments. So what are you investing in with your orthodontic payments? Your orthodontist’s education, expense, expertise, and the time that s/he invests in your child’s smile to get it just right. The amount you invest will provide you and your child with confidence and with a smile that will last forever! Contact Dr. Olsen, a board certified orthodontist, with offices in San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano, at info@ocbraces.com or visit www.ocbraces.com for more information.

Estate Planning Life Without Regrets BY SUSAN HATTAN DALLAS

WHAT DO Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Jr., Jimi

Hendrix, Pablo Picasso, Howard Hughes and Prince have in common? Yes, you guessed it — they all died without a will. The rich and famous are not alone in this regard; it is estimated that 64% of Americans do not have a will. Most would answer that they just haven’t gotten around to it, they don’t like thinking about death, or it is too expensive.

SuSan DallaS H attan, ESq. Estate Pl anning

As to that first issue, we are all busy. Life races by for families juggling work, soccer practice, baseball games, school, home projects and other activities. Smartphones and tablets deliver an endless stream of urgent emails, texts, posts, tweets and various items to notice and “like.” And in the back of our minds, we all probably have some unsettling tasks we know we should get to, but we never do.

It is estimated that 64% of Americans do not have a will.

And then, occasionally something happens to jolt us into reality, — the death of a loved one or friend, for example — that causes us to think about what is important in life. No one wants to leave with regrets. After working with terminally ill patients, palliative nurse Bonnie Ware discovered that the regrets of the dying have common threads. Among the most common were the following: unrealized dreams, working too hard at the expense of loved ones, losing touch with friends, and not choosing happiness first. While not making an estate plan is not on the list of common regrets, consider how getting your financial house in order and planning for the future can take care of those you love, and give you peace of mind. At the same time, think beyond wills and trusts. Turn off your phone for a day (or a few hours,) do something you have always wanted to do, and create good memories with those you love. What do you hope not to regret? Susan Dallas Hattan, Esq. is Talega resident and attorney specializing in estate planning and financial education. Wealth Management Strategies Preparing for Health Care Costs in Retirement WITH COLIN SMITH CFP®, AAMS®

IN PREPARING for retirement, many of us overlook

health care costs, perhaps because we think Medicare will pay for everything; but this is not always the case. In fact, if you were eventually faced with major health-care related expenses, how would you cope with the cost?

To budget for health care costs during retirement, $4,000 to $6,000 per year per person for traditional medical expenses is a reasonable starting point. What can you do to help cope with these costs? Here are a few suggestions: • Try to estimate what your out-of-pocket costs might be based on your health, your age at retirement and whatever supplemental insurance you may carry.

• Know the key dates before you become eligible for Medicare at age 65. Also, be aware of the seven-month window for enrolling in Medicare, beginning three months before your 65th birthday. • Review your insurance options. Medicare-approved insurance companies offer some other parts to Medicare — including Part D— which covers prescription drugs; Medigap, which covers gaps in Parts A and B (in-hospital expenses, doctor services, outpatient care and some preventive services;) and Part C (also known as Medicare Advantage, designed to replace Parts A, B, Medigap and, potentially, part

Humor Column Guide to Surviving Life OUR RAINED-OUT FAMILY VACATIONS BY MYRON KUKLA

IT’S SUMMER. The weather is lousy. The roads are clogged with construction and traffic. So, obviously, it’s time to go on the annual family summer vacation.

Usually, I can accurately predict our vacation will be a disaster before we go. For one thing, our vacations always involve lots of water even though we almost never go to the lake or beach. The water on our vacations comes in the form of rain, hail, sleet, tornadoes, hurricanes, and (on alternate years) flooding. Over the years, the Kukla family has taken a variety of vacations to any number of interesting places where we’ve been rained on. I’ve kept a journal of the jaunts, and I would like to share the highlights from my vacation journals for you. Date: July, something [date washed away by rainwater]

We’ve gone on our first camping trip. So far, it’s rained all week. Kids are complaining that we brought them. What’s worse is we forgot to put our collie Jo in the kennel again. Can’t get the smell of wet dog off us. Date: July, something, something

Bright, sunny weather all the way to Myrtle Beach. Spent the afternoon on the beach getting sun until the hurricane rolled in. North Carolina Governor has evacuated the coast. Spent the rest of our vacation at a tacky amusement park called “South of the Border” trying to toss waterlogged softballs into sombreros to win a prize. Date: Everything but the number “11” obliterated by water

We’ve gone off to Mammoth Caves, Kentucky, to explore the grandeur of these underground natural wonders. As usual for our vacation, it’s rained the whole time in Kentucky, but for once, we were underground, so no one cared. The Mammoth Caves tour guide took us on enthralling walk through the wondrous caverns full of stalactites and stalagmites. Whenever the guide stopped and asked for questions, our son Jason asked, “Does Batman live here?” He asked the question 47 times and got the answer “No” 47 times. For fun, Jason started asking, “Where’s Robin?” Our son Matthew disappeared during the tour. After an hour search, we found him sleeping in one of the tunnels. Nathan pretended to fall down a “bottomless sinkhole” for laughs. We became the first family ever banned from Mammoth Caves. Rest of trip washed out by flooding. 16  TALEGA LIFE

Rest of entry destroyed

Here’s a summary:

Have come to Disneyland. Experienced no earthquakes or tidal waves along the way. Weather is beautiful. Found free passes to the park, and there are almost no crowds. We’re all enjoying ourselves thoroughly.

Took family on fishing trip. Rained buckets. Fish drowned. Date: Road trip 2006

I think I’ve come with the wrong family. Myron Kukla is the author of several books of humor including Guide to Surviving Life available at https:// squareup.com/store/myronkuklabooks. Email him at myronkuklabooks@gmail.com.

Went on a road trip to national historic sights on east coast. Plan to see Gettysburg, Washington, D.C., someplace where everyone wears colonial clothes and build things by hand, and also Busch Gardens. We drove all night to avoid traffic. We have three drivers. Nate took the midnight to 3 a.m. shift on the Pennsylvania Turnpike while we slept in the back of the van. About 2am we woke to the sound of tires screeching and Nathan shouting, “Oh, my God, we’re going to die!” as the van swerved back and forth on two wheels. “What’s happening?!” I screamed. He laughed. “Nothing. Just go back to sleep.” No one slept the rest of the night.
