TALEGA MARKET UPDATE PRESENTED BY THE ECHELBERGER GROUP As you read this update, summer will be fast approaching and the school year will have ended. After a busy spring, we are expecting market trends to follow those of the last four years. The trend has been low inventory in the spring, sparking a strong seller’s market, and as we reach summer, inventory builds. The result is a balanced market. Towards the end of summer, however, inventory peaks and buyer activity tapers out through the end of the year with inventory following a downward trend. With school starting earlier this year, I would expect our peak inventory to happen in late July or early August. I have watched this trend for the last four years and I do not expect this year to be any different. Additionally, with it being an election year, distractions for buyers typically cause a slower market. It is important to take this all into account when considering the sale of your home. My best advice is to consult a trusted real estate professional when embarking on your journey. You can reach me at doug@echelberger.com or my direct line 949.463.0400. THIS MONTH we introduce you to the Koneval Family. They moved here ten years ago from the Midwest, all the result of a visit to San Clemente and an afternoon at Fisherman’s at the pier while it was snowing back home in Ohio.

June 19th is Father’s Day, and research suggests that holding on to our good memories and leaving the bad ones behind helps us to better deal with unpleasant situations and retain a positive outlook on life. The memories I have of my childhood with my dad all bring back such great memories. My father loves to have fun and taught me probably every Irish drinking song ever written. Trips in the car included singing all of these, plus classics from Willie Nelson and Bob Seger. I appreciate those songs so much more today and now my kids know them, too. Every June when school let out for summer, my father would pull out his old and crinkled paper map of New England and spread it over the kitchen table, allowing my brothers and I to choose our summer camping destinations. He’d laugh (annoyingly so) when I fell on the ski slopes in winter, trying to keep up with my brothers. He’d laugh even harder when I sat in the snow, frustrated, and likely showing it by whining about how I wanted to get out of the cold and into the warmth of the lodge. But my dad’s laughter is contagious and even if you don’t know what it is he’s laughing about, it’s hard to contain and it can ignite an entire room. So there I’d be cold, wet and covered with snow but eventually I’d start laughing, too. There’s no question in my mind that my father was trying to toughen me up up a bit. He taught me the value in being able to laugh at myself, not take life too seriously, and pick myself up, dust off the snow and try again with a smile. Happy Father’s Day to all of you dads who inspire your children every day!

Photography Family Portraiture Improves Self-esteem in Children BY FLORINA ROMOSER

IN 1975, a revealing study was conducted by Jerry Fryer of Tulane

University and Mary Ammerman with Murfreesboro City Schools on photography, children and self-esteem. The results showed a 37% increase in self-esteem related behaviors of young children who participated, pointing to evidence that personal photography of children can help boost a child’s self-esteem. Although this particular study was done over 40 years ago, many experts believe the findings to be just as true today as they were then. Family portraiture can be a truly life-changing experience for children and their self-esteem. When a child goes through the portrait process with their family and then sees the family portrait prominently hanging in their home every day, this gives them an incomparable sense of security and they see themselves as a valued and important part of that family. In this day and age where everyone takes photos on their cell phones, few children actually have photos of themselves in their homes. It’s hard to imagine how easy it is to lose all of your photos

in one fell swoop, but we see it happen time and time again. I often hear, “But my photos were in the Cloud” after the loss of a phone or external hard drive. Many sadly find out their photos are completely missing and irretrievable. The art of the portrait is something that goes beyond the immediate and lasts for generations. Think of the Mona Lisa by Leonardo DaVinci— it was painted in 1517. Canvas portraits stand the test of time beyond the age of the internet. The heirloom quality

and timelessness of canvas portraits are an ideal way to capture your family’s legacy. Because ultimately, it is not for ourselves that we take photos but for future generations. The

Koneval Family BY JOANNA LARSON

hen Laura Krech was seven, her parents packed up their Volkswagen Rabbit with their three young girls in tow and drove cross country from Cleveland, Ohio to start a new life in Southern California. Young entrepreneurs, they left to open the Christine Valmy skincare salon on Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills. The Krech family enjoyed the years they lived in Glendale, joined by a few relatives close by who had decided to leave Ohio years prior. They only stayed a few years though, and, when Laura was in 3rd grade, her parents sold the salon and moved back to Ohio. Laura met Eric (nicknamed “Pancho” by his grandfather when he was just a baby) when she was in second grade in their hometown of Strongsville, Ohio. They grew up in the same neighborhood, only a few streets away from one another, and attended the same schools together through high school. A few years older than Laura, when Panch graduated from high school he won a scholarship to play Division 1 soccer at the University of Detroit Mercy. He studied Business Administration and after four years of college life and athletics, received his bachelor’s degree and returned to his hometown.

Once Laura finished high school, she moved to Southern California to attend college but ended up moving back to Ohio to complete her degree at Baldwin-Wallace College, a private, liberal arts school. Driven and independent, Laura worked fulltime to put herself through school and graduated with a degree in Communications and Business. She and Panch began dating after reconnecting at a local homecoming in the summer of 1994. In 1999, the two got married. Panch started his career working at Euclid Chemical Company, a specialty chemical company for the concrete industry, where he has worked for the past twenty-three years. He started in sales, moving on to become a regional manager in Ohio and currently serves as a division manager for the Western U.S. Laura started her career in medical sales, selling laboratory testing, equipment for digital pathology, and software used in medical research for fifteen years. She travelled globally— all over the U.S., as well as Edinburgh, Paris and London. In February of 2002, during one of Laura’s business trips to California she stopped to visit a friend in San Clemente. The two were sitting with cocktails at Fisherman’s Restaurant on the pier,

According to Laura, Panch said, “You don’t even want to know! Let’s just say you’re not missing anything!” It was at that moment, after appreciating years of vacations, business and

personal trips to see family on the West Coast that Laura decided that she and Panch had to make a long-term plan to move out to Southern California permanently. The plan resulted in what they deemed a “reversetransfer” to Southern California in 2006. Panch’s loyalty and experience with Euclid Chemical provided him a promotion to a West Coast regional manager; and Laura found a job working as a sales manager for Aperio Technology. She moved out to San Clemente a few months ahead of Panch, while he sold their home and packed up for the big move. In 2009, the Konevals bought their first house on a quiet street in Mirador in Talega and have lived there, happily, since. “We are 100% grateful every day that we’re here, in Talega, for so many reasons,” says Laura. They enjoy getting together with neighbors at block parties or hosting pool parties at their beautiful home. “We have a great network of friends and there’s never any shortage of fun around here!” Also in 2009, the two realized that they had been having plenty of fun together during their decade of marriage and had built solid careers, but were ready to start a family. “We were always so focused on our careers that we didn’t want to slow down to have children,” says Laura. Pregnancy did not come easy for Laura, and they tried for several years without any luck. After

Laura is also very active locally. She has been a past chair close to four years of infertility treatments, surgeries, countless blood draws, tears, miscarriages and bed rest, at last their eighth with the San Clemente Junior Women’s Club, Vice President of attempt at IVF was successful and Laura and Panch were ecstatic the MOMs Club of Talega and a member of the San Clemente to welcome Cameron James into their lives in 2002. “We are so Rotary. Giving back to the community is very important to thankful and grateful for Cameron!” says Laura. Outgoing, kind Laura and she appreciates the many experiences and friends she’s and conversational, he is a perfect combination of both his father gained through these organizations. Panch and Laura belong to and mother. Aiming to pass on to Cameron the Midwest values Bella Colina Golf Club and though Panch is the only true golfer that they were both raised with, Panch admits they have high in the family, they both enjoy the camaraderie associated with expectations and raising him with good manners and kindness the local club. As a family, the Konevals all love to travel to Mammoth are extremely important to both of them. Today, Panch looks forward to his Saturday mornings with and go as often as they’re able to. Panch says about the drive, “When you get to about the Cameron— jumping in the 4 ½ hour mark and you start Jeep and driving down to seeing the mountains, it’s a The Bagel Shack for breakwhole different feeling up fast sandwiches that they there.” Cameron loves skienjoy together while looking ing, having started lessons at at the ocean at T Street. They fully appreciate and passion he had while being able to go to the snow playing the sport he loves. Laura, having decided when Cameron was a baby that she when you want it, without having to endure the all-consuming wanted to limit her busy work and travel schedule to be home Midwest winters they have gladly put behind them. It’s Not You… It’s Your Fins BY PAUL DURANT

RECENTLY, I WENT SURFING with a

friend of mine who had just purchased a board that was a completely new and different size and shape than any board he’d ridden before. Like most boards made today, it didn’t come with a set of fins. It used to be that when you purchased a new surfboard, the shaper would design the perfect set of glassed on fins for that board. Compare that to today, when you yourself have to choose the perfect fins from a huge selection of brands, all manufactured in a multitude of shapes and sizes. How do you know what type of fin is perfect for the board you are riding? Things to consider are:

• the type of board

• your riding style and weight

• where you’re surfing

• most importantly, what type of fin system was glass in to the board.

There are so may options out there it will make your head spin. If you are riding a longboard you can chose from a multitude of flex fins, rake fins, pivot fins, “D” fins and a slew of other hybrid fins that will work in the correct conditions on the right board. On short boards, you have even more options that will work completely differently depending on wave size, shape, surf break and the rider’s weight. These different fin configurations will come in options such as, but not limited to, a 5 fin, quads, tri fins, twin fins and single fins.

Fins have a huge impact on the feel, stability, drive and maneuverability of a surfboard – factors that can completely alter the way you experience surfing.

Years ago I purchased a board that was shipped from Australia with a set of fins already on it. I was so excited to try my new board at my favorite surf break. Immediately, I noticed that it felt very stiff and there was no drive in the board. I then tried the board at a shallow surf break in Newport where I ended up snapping the trailing fin off. I headed back to my shop and I asked the sales rep what he would recommend for a new pair of fins since the fins that I had were not working for me. He made a recommendation, and it made all the difference the world.

At first I felt that it was the shape, my ability, or maybe it was just a “bad” board, but, in reality it was just a simple matter of switching out the fins. That change in fins turned that board from the one that stayed on the shelf to being my daily rider. Fins have a huge impact on the feel, stability, drive and maneuverability of a surfboard – factors that can completely alter the way you experience surfing. So if you haven’t changed out your fins, give it a try. If you have changed your fins and you’re still struggling, then maybe it is you! Orthodontics Orthodontic Emergency! BY DR. TAYLOR OLSEN

I’LL OFTEN GET A PHONE CALL on the weekend from a

patient saying, “Help, I have an orthodontic emergency!” If you’ve gone through braces, you know that sometimes things go south – a wire starts to poke or a bracket comes loose. Oftentimes I can give my patients some advice over the phone or walk them through a home remedy and resolve the problem. Occasionally, I may have to meet them at the office to handle the situation. There are definitely a handful of true orthodontic emergencies— things that cause severe pain or might keep you from being able to eat. For example, a wire is poking a hole in your cheek and causing bleeding or facial swelling; an appliance has come loose and is hanging partway out of the mouth; you got hit in the face with a baseball and it knocked some of your teeth loose. These are true orthodontic emergencies and require immediate attention. Sometimes there are things that might be annoying but aren’t considered actual emergencies— a wire is a bit pokey but can be covered with wax or a bracket came loose from the tooth

but is still connected to the wire. While these might be mildly irritating, they usually can be tolerated for a couple days and addressed when you meet with your orthodontist back in the office. Every once in a while I have to chuckle at what some people consider emergencies. I have received calls on the weekend to discuss orthodontic insurance benefits, and to reschedule appointments. Things like these are probably best handled during office hours One way to determine whether or not it’s a true emergency is to ask yourself if you’re in severe pain or are bleeding. These are emergencies— call your orthodontist! On the other hand, sometimes you you can use a little wax and make it through to Monday without it causing too much trouble. Contact Dr. Olsen, a board certified orthodontist, with offices in San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano, at info@ocbraces.com or visit www.ocbraces.com for more information.

Audiology Today Better Brain Health BY DR. MARY MADDOCK AU.D. BOARD CERTIFIED IN AUDIOLOGY BY THE AMERICAN BOARD OF AUDIOLOGY

articles discussing the relationship between untreated hearing loss and dementia.

The actual mechanism behind the relationship is not known and is suspected to be related to the reduced social activity of those with untreated hearing loss. Thus, there has been a push to obtain hearing aids early to assist with remaining engaged and active socially. As the babies of the Greatest Generation reach their 60’s and approaching their 70’s, the notion of brain health has become more and more popular. Games and computer programs such as Brain HQ, Lumosity, LACE and more promote cognitive health. The very best thing that can be done to maintain cognitive health is to stay socially active. Having a hearing loss makes the goal of being socially active much more difficult. Recently, the results of French study looking at more than 3,000 adults over the age of 65 for a 25-year period found those who used hearing aids had no greater risk of cognitive decline than those with normal hearing. This is the first long-term study that has documented the importance of getting hearing aids early and wearing them as critical for the long-term health of the person’s cognitive abilities.

Today’s hearing aids do more than “just” amplify or make sounds louder. Not all hearing aids are created equal. We hear with our ears, but we listen and understand with our brains. The ears and the brain work together as a team. Initially the sound enters the ears and the ears role on the team is to organize the sound. The brain then performs five key tasks:

• ORIENT: The brain receives information from the ears and uses this information to orient itself and localize the sounds in the environment.

• RECOGNIZE: After this localization the brain identifies the sound and determines if it is important at that specific time. In other words, the brain makes sense of the information that the ear provides. • FOCUS: The brain depends on receiving similar information from each ear. With this information the brain is able to determine what is important and, therefore, how it will focus especially in a noisy environment.

• SEPARATE: As part of focusing, the brain will separate the relevant sounds from the unwanted sounds

• UNDERSTAND: In the final step, the brain uses memory to aid in the understanding of what is being said.

Without understanding, hearing means nothing. Even a mild hearing loss causes the brain to work harder to follow conversations, and mild hearing loss has been linked to cognitive decline. If the brain struggles to make sense of the sound, the ability to understand speech will decline. An impaired ear will provide the brain with a reduced amount of information. Wearing hearing aids means that the brain is getting better information with which to work and to understand. Seek an audiologist who has a doctorate degree in audiology and make an appointment today for more information about your hearing and if hearing aids are right for you! www.bestversionmedia.com

To Your Health Unschedule Yourself BY JEANNIE MCCORMACK

ALWAYS THINKING about what’s next on the calendar, we are all overscheduled these days. Being overscheduled can zap the joy right out of life. What’s worse, we do it to our kids. I’m still experiencing PTSD from raising four children in Southern California. I don't know how I did it, and if I had it to do over, maybe I would try to do less. Probably not, but just know that stress is contagious. I remember giving my oldest daughter a playhouse for her birthday. She walked into the mini house and brushed all the dishes out of the kitchen proclaiming, "This will be my office!" In these days of easy and constant connectivity, we expect to make contact with anyone at any moment. I have a friend that sometimes gets up to do her hair and makeup at 2:30 am for a conference call! The more we are always multitasking and in constant contact with others through our devices, the more we lose contact with ourselves, or sadly, our children. So it is precisely the busiest people who must give themselves space to clear their heads. In creating this space, you will have more joy and energy to share with your family and your business. Taking time each day to relax is helpful to so many people. And increasingly, more and more people are now putting the time aside to enjoy the “secular sabbath.” In his book, The Art of Stillness, Pico Iyer, a travel writer from Santa Barbara, makes a case for taking one day a week off to do nothing. Schedule nothing and just let the day unfold. A pause. A one-day respite. A retreat through which we can meander without agenda. I tried explaining this concept to my husband who accounts for every second of his time all day long. It took some convincing but I didn’t give up, and after thirty years of maintaining a busy schedule, my husband likes the idea of a whole day off very much. Now he

bounces out of bed a little early every morning so he has time to breathe. Countless successful people, from Ghandi to John F. Kennedy Jr. carved a small block of time out of their busy day to do nothing. Before the day takes hold of you, create some space in your busy schedule. You will be happier and more joyful! Plastic Surgery Plastic Surgery Q&A WITH DR. KYLE SONG

I’M EXCITED to be submitting my first contribution to Talega

Life. Every quarter, I’ll be writing a recurring column – Plastic Surgery Q&A. Please email any and all plastic surgery questions to me and if your question is selected to be published in an upcoming column, you will receive a free Hydrafacial treatment at Song Plastic Surgery in Irvine. Questions may be submitted to: song@songplasticsurgery.com. Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoy!

Q: A:

How do I know if I need a breast lift, or just an augmentation?

The easiest at-home test is the pencil test. Steal your kids #2 pencil and place it under your breast. Did the pencil fall to the ground, or did it stay between your breast and your abdominal skin? If you’re in the latter group, a breast lift would aid in reshaping your breast to a higher position on your chest wall.

Q: A:

How long should I wait after childbirth before considering cosmetic surgery?

Pregnancy and breastfeeding undoubtedly take their toll on a woman’s body. In general, you should wait six months after pregnancy or at the conclusion of breastfeeding before considering surgery, such as breast or stomach reshaping. During this waiting period, your body will undergo self-repair and we would want to ensure you’re stabilized before making any permanent surgical changes.

Q: A:

How should I choose a plastic surgeon?

I recommend meeting with two or three board-certified plastic surgeons to get several opinions. This gives you the opportunity to see which surgeon and practice is the best match for your needs and aesthetic goals.

Q: A:

Do implants need to be changed at regular intervals?

Not anymore. Implants from the 1980s and 90s needed to be changed roughly every ten years because they would eventually leak. The implants were filled with silicone oil which made for soft implants, but ones that didn’t last. Today’s implants are filled with a high-strength cohesive gel and will never leak. As long as you get regular mammograms to screen the implant for rupture, your implants should last 20-25 years.

Q: A:

Summer is coming. What can I do to get “bikini ready?”

Our quickest, easiest, and most popular bikini-season treatment is Cellfina – an FDAapproved cellulite reduction and elimination treatment. It is a single treatment, performed under local anesthetic, and creates permanent improvement in the appearance of cellulite dimples. On Realself.com, Cellfina received a 93% “worth it” rating.

Q: A:

What is the recovery period from breast surgery?

Surprisingly, it’s quite fast. Whether you require an augmentation alone, or a lift plus implants, you should only take narcotic medication for the first 24 hours. Within a day, you should be back to normal life – driving and carrying your little ones. Most women return to work within three days, can perform light workouts at two weeks, and by three weeks can be crushing it at the gym! Living Well of celebrating, it’s the lemon. These luminous, golden orbs are so beneficial and full of antioxidants, not to mention delicious in cuisine. Despite their pungent taste, lemons are full of appeal for many reasons. We all know citrus fruits are chock full of vitamin C, but what else is in a lemon that makes it so beneficial? Vitamin B6, vitamin A, vitamin E, iron, magnesium, potassium, zinc, phosphorous, folate, niacin thiamin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid, copper and calcium are some of the other important elements in a lemon. Flavonoids, which are composites that contain cancer fighting properties and antioxidants, can also be found in the fruit. Let’s take a look at the incredible health benefits lemons have to offer.

Blest by the Zest! BY TRISHA HIATT

T

he first man who reached the top of Mt. Everest, Edmund Hillary, claimed that his success on Mt. Everest was greatly due to lemons. He and his climbing partner, Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, drank copious amounts of hot lemon water to stave off dehydration. It apparently worked for them. I love lemons dearly. The smell of the

blossoms on the Ponderosa Lemon tree in my backyard is heavenly and this sunny, yellow fruit adds brightness even to the dullest of days. They’re zesty and tangy, they’re packed with essential nourishing nutrients, and they’re readily available. Once upon a time, these citrus fruits were presented as gifts to kings because of their rarity. If ever a fruit was worthy

Lemons are alkalizing to the body. Sometimes your body’s pH can become off balance and your body can be less alkaline and more acidic. If your body is acidic, you will need whole foods to help it become alkaline and, even though they are acidic, lemons are one of the best foods for this because they are only acidic outside the body. When lemon juice becomes fully metabolized in the body, its minerals are spread into the bloodstream, creating an alkalizing effect, which raises the pH in the body. Lemons are extreme immune boosters. All of that vitamin C protects the body against sickness and disease and keeps the body’s immune system in check.

DID YOU KNOW? There are about 10,000 chemicals in personal care products, and only 10% have been tested for safety. The US has not passed a federal law to regulate the ingredients in personal care products since 1938. The EU has banned more than 1,400 ingredients - The US has banned only 11.

Vitamin C-rich foods, such as lemons, help protect against inflammatory polyarthritis, a form of rheumatoid arthritis. Lemons boost your metabolism. Drinking lemon water first thing in the morning gets our system going and sparks up our metabolism. Lemons fight against aging and free radicals because of their high amounts of vitamin C. When this vitamin travels through the body, it neutralizes free radicals that destroy healthy cells and can cause inflammation. Due to the flavonoid compounds that are found in this fruit, lemons contain 22 anti-cancer compounds. Research has shown that lemons and limes have limonoids, which help fight cancers of the mouth, skin, colon, breast and stomach. These anti-cancer compounds such as flavonol glycosides stop cancer cells from dividing.

Lemons are detoxifiers. Drinking warm lemon water in the morning upon waking helps flush out built-up toxins from the liver. Staying hydrated with lemon water helps toxins move out of the body instead of being stored in fat cells. Having beautiful, glowing skin is possible thanks to the wholesome nutrients in lemons. They prevent the formation of wrinkles and acne because of the high antioxidant content. They can

lighten complexion and dark spots on skin. They can even out skin tone, treat an oily complexion, and exfoliate the skin. Nasty blackheads can be removed just by rubbing lemon juice on them every night until they’re gone. Known to aide in digestion and colon health, lemons contain pectin fiber, which enable them to do so. They increase peristalsis in the bowels, helping to create bowel movements, consequently eliminating waste. Lemons have vitamin P (bioflavonoids) which aide in strengthening blood vessels and treating high blood pressure. Having powerful antibacterial properties, lemons are known to destroy the bacteria of malaria, typhoid, cholera, diptheria and other deadly diseases.

Lemons are incredibly versatile. Not only do they have such nutritive health benefits, but they also add so much pizzazz to foods, enabling them to be either sweet or savory. Enliven your palette with lemon meringue pie, lemon sorbet, glazed lemon cookies, or lemonade for a sweet taste. For a savory piquancy, fish with fresh lemon and capers, roasted lemon chicken, or lemon frittata with leeks and goat cheese are quite succulent. One of my favorite recipes to make is tilapia with Mediterranean salsa including basil,

“When life gives you a lemon… squeeze it, mix it with six ounces of distilled water and drink twice daily.” – Jethro Kloss in his book Back to Eden

olive oil, fresh lemon juice, lemon wedges, tomatoes, black olives and a little jalapeno. Whether it’s a cup full, or just a squeeze of the juice, this fruit with fine-grained skin changes the taste of everything. Embrace your love for the lemon and all of its peppy attributes, and you may just want to add them to your next grocery list... or even plant your own tree!
