The website www.vocabulary defines miracle as an “amazing or wonderful occurrence from the Latin miraculum ‘object of wonder.’ Dig way back and the word derives from smeiros, meaning ‘to smile,’ which is exactly what you do when a miracle happens.” This seems to be a perfect interpretation. We commonly view miracles as something that completely defies explanation by the laws of nature. And they certainly can be, as experienced by our feature family this month. (In fact, sometimes they even masquerade as challenges that lead to wondrous resolutions.) But we shouldn’t let that limit our thinking. On the other hand, miracles don't have to be big. As we get older, most of us have a mixed bag of holiday experiences – some memories full of joy, other of sadness such as the loss of a loved one or another life-altering experience. It may sound trite, but the best antidote is to celebrate life's miracles – many times found in the small things. The smile of a friend over coffee, the beauty of a San Clemente sunset, the laughter of a child, the soft peach fuzz of a little puppy’s belly and the giggle of a tiny baby are all everyday miracles. Kids get the magic of miracles. So, be a kid this holiday season. You'll feel better for it! Happy holidays,

WEALTH MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES
Gauging Your Financial Well-Being
H
ow well off do you think you are financially? If your career or life takes an unexpected turn, would your finances hold up? These are major questions, and most people can’t answer them as quickly as they would like. Here is a five-point test you can take to gauge your financial well-being. Are you saving about 15% of your salary for retirement? That’s a nice target. If you’re earning good money, that will probably amount to $10-20,000 per year. Annual IRA contributions and incremental salary deferrals into a workplace retirement plan will likely put you in that ballpark. As those dollars are being invested as well as saved, they have the potential to grow with tax deferral – and if your employer is making matching contributions to your retirement account along the way, you have another reason to smile. Do you have an emergency fund? A strong emergency fund contains enough
money to cover six months of expenses for the individual who maintains it. If you head up a family, the fund should ideally be larger. At first thought, building a cash reserve that big may seem daunting, or even impossible – but households have done it, especially households that have jettisoned or whittled down debt. If you have done it, give yourself a hand with the knowledge that you have prepared well for uncertainty. Do you have a will or an estate plan? Dying intestate (without a will) can leave your heirs with financial headaches at an already depressing time. Having a will is basic, yet many Americans don’t create one. A living will, a healthcare power of attorney and a double-check on the beneficiary designations on your investment accounts is also wise. Not everyone needs an estate plan. But if you’re reading this article, chances are you might. If you have significant wealth, a complex financial life or some

?
long-range financial directives you would like your heirs to carry out or abide by, it is a good idea. Is your credit score 700 or better? Today, 685 is considered an average FICO score. If you go below 650, life can get more expensive for you. Hopefully, you pay your bills consistently and unfailingly and your score is in the 700’s. Are you worth much more than you owe? This is the #1 objective. You want your major debts gone and you want enough money for a lifetime. You will probably always carry some debt, and you can’t rule out risks to your net worth tomorrow – but if you are getting further and further ahead financially and your bottom line shows it, you are making progress in your pursuit of financial independence

Want to help raise money for our local school, Vista del Mar? All you have to do is link your Ralph’s rewards card to Vista del Mar. Each year, Ralph’s donates 2-4% from every purchase made. Last year, they donated $19,000! It’s simple to do. Next time you are in Ralph’s, just ask the cashier to scan your rewards card and the barcode for Vista del Mar. It’s a great, free way to help support our children’s education. The barcode is available at the check stands.

I hear that keeping a food journal might help me lose weight. Can you give me some tips on how to get started and the best way to journal?
Q
years ago. The history and stories that accompany gifts found in our local vintage stores connect one to a distant time and place – to people you’ve never met but whose lives have touched yours because something they once cherished now belongs to you. Consider sharing the story when giving a gift from a consignment shop. Perhaps write it lovingly, in your own hand on fine stationery. The recipient of the gift will often be touched that you took such time and detail to invest in the tale and history of the item, along with treasuring the rarity of the item itself. Consignment shops, second hand and antique stores are filled from floor to ceiling with the stories of people’s lives. Step into one this holiday season to buy gifts your recipients will always treasure.
Coach Joe Answers: Several studies have shown that people
who keep food journals are more likely to be successful in losing weight. The simple act of food journaling is an excellent way to bring instant awareness to what, how much, and why you are eating. You might choose a simple notebook or you could use a smart phone app (like Anytime Health) and track digitally. It makes the most sense to log right after you eat, whenever possible. Be sure to include time of meal, food amount/portion size and degree of hunger. Be as honest and thorough as you can. It’s easy to forget the handful of M&M’s at the office or that Alfredo sauce on your lunchtime pasta. Review your journal weekly.

Q
Can you please explain what circuit training is?
Coach Dave Answers: Circuit training is a form of body con-
ditioning where you perform an exercise for a period of time and then move on to another exercise. Typically, you’ll perform each exercise for the assigned time or repetitions and have little to no rest before transitioning to the next exercise. Once you complete all the exercises in the circuit, you’ll rest and repeat the circuit again. On the fitness floor in a gym setting, you’ll find stations of exercises/equipment placed around the room. Circuits can be strength exercises only or a combination of strength and cardio exercises. Circuit training is fast paced, fun and great for anyone who is busy and wants to combine strength and cardio in one workout.

What should I eat or drink if I only have an hour before a workout?
Staff Member Mike Answers: What to eat before you exercise should be largely determined by timing and personal preference. Generally speaking, a large meal takes 4-5 hours to digest, a smaller meal takes 2-3 hours and a large snack takes 1-2 hours. If you don’t digest food well enough prior to an activity, you can end up with a stomachache and cramping. This often occurs because blood (which plays a key role in digestion) is shunted to your arms and legs during activity, thereby slowing down the digestive process. If you only have an hour to fuel yourself, it would probably be best to stick with a liquid carbohydrate/ protein shake. Liquids are processed faster than solid foods and will provide the energy you need in a shorter timeframe. We’re talking about a sports nutrition shake that is designed for active individuals and athletes. If you want something lighter, a traditional sports drink would be a viable option as well.

How To Find Unique, One-OfA-Kind Gifts for the Holidays
hopping local consignment and second hand stores is a wonderful way to find one of a kind gifts and jewelry for the holidays. These types of stores bring a unique dimension to the shopping experience. Think teacups and saucers, a cigarette lighter from Clark Gabel’s era, Elvis Presley records, a vintage brooch, antique candelabra and dazzling gemstone-studded jewelry. All bought for a fraction of the price often found in today’s gift stores. Vintage, contemporary and classic pieces abound in our local shops. The savvy shopper can easily blend these pieces with items they already own, adding a rich dimension of culture and history to their lives and homes. Often, the story that accompanies an item is as interesting as the gift itself. What if you learned that the gift gleaming from a nearby shelf was once given to the love of someone’s life three generations ago? Or that the item you have your hands on is the only item someone had when they fled their country

WELLNESS TALK
Peace Through Breath and Movement TIS THE SEASON. While fun and festivities abound, many people find this time of year stressful. So, keep your workout routine on the schedule. Don’t skip it! During my years of experience teaching all types of movement classes, I always polled each individual on the first day of classes to determine their desired goal in taking the class. I was always rather surprised to hear so many young people telling me their goal in taking Pilates or yoga was peace. But then, maybe I wasn’t so surprised after all. In all mindbody traditions, breath is an integral component of the practice. Most mind body-traditions use what is called an audible breath. Which means? Breathe loudly! This might seem rather strange to the newcomer, but those with an established practice know very well that to get that sought after glow of the practice, you must breathe. If you breathe with your movements, you can achieve that peaceful feeling that is often referred to as an “endorphin high” – relaxed, clear minded, energized and restored with renewed vigor.
DP PILATES & BARRE –– An Ocean Front Boutique Studio ––
There are many different audible breathing techniques, from the Fletcher breath in Pilates to the Ujjayi breath in yoga. Why am I such a big proponent of breath? I always think that if a bit of wisdom comes at you from several different traditions or disciplines, there you will find truth. The Patanjali Yoga Sutras say, “Calm is retained by the controlled exhalation or retention of the breath.” According to Joseph Pilates in his book Return to Life, “Correct breathing exercises under the dominance of mental control would undoubtedly accomplish more toward attaining and maintaining maximum health standards, than all other remedies combined.” And with that, I remember a lovely chant that loosely translates as: with a calm mind I will take the appropriate action at the appropriate time. Your breath will bring you a calm mind. The more you practice, the easier it is to bring yourself to a calm mind. You will be more peaceful, happier and enjoy more success in your life.
Jeannie Jeannie McCormack has been teaching movement (Yoga, Pilates, and Barre) for 30 years. Visit www.desaprana.com or call (949) 443-1700 for more information about this simple yet powerful practice.

earing loss does not just affect your ability to understand speech; it affects all aspects of your life. Seniors with untreated hearing loss are significantly more likely to develop dementia over time than those who retain their hearing or treat their hearing loss early. And there is a much greater risk of serious injury from falling.
Development of Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease
Multiple studies indicate that hearing loss can be linked to the onset of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Over the course of a six-year study (JAMA Internal Medicine. Frank R. Lin, MD, PHD. Hearing loss and Cognitive Decline in Older Adults), Dr. Lin observed 1984 adults with an average age of 77.4 years and tracked the progression of their cognitive function. He concluded that while further research was needed to identify the mechanics of how and why untreated hearing loss and cognitive decline are related, “There is little doubt that hearing loss is a factor in loss of mental acuity in older adults. Even subjects with mild untreated hearing loss were found to more likely experience cognitive failures.” He also states, “Declines in hearing abilities may accelerate gray matter atrophy and increase the listening effort necessary to comprehend speech. Hearing aids may not only improve hearing but preserve the brain.” Risk of Falling
People with a 25 decibel hearing loss (classified as mild) were nearly three times more likely to have a history of falling than those with no hearing loss. Every additional 10 decibels of hearing loss means an increase in the risk of falling. One out of three adults age 65 and older fall each year and the falls are the leading cause of fatal and nonfatal injuries. Hearing loss decreases the awareness of surroundings and environments and also increases cognitive load. In turn, this raises the potential for falls. The association between hearing loss and increased chance of falling is considered clinically significant. Research is ongoing, but it is reasonable to suggest that physicians inform patients of the link between hearing loss and falls, to advise having their patients hearing tested annually and to wear hearing aids when recommended by their hearing care professional. hen Jayme and Maria embarked on their life together, they could never have imagined the mountains they would need to conquer as a team. On the other hand, they also couldn’t possibly fathom the miracles that would occur. Their story is an inspirational example of faith, hope and love. They met in the friendly skies of United Airlines. After a year and a half at Northern Kentucky University majoring in Vocal Performance, Maria developed vocal cord nodules that
ended this career option. She decided to change paths and become a flight attendant with United in Chicago. Jayme was working in Chicago after his graduation from Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The mother of Jayme’s ex-girlfriend was also a UA flight attendant working a flight along with Maria’s roommate (another new Chicago resident). Through that connection, Jayme was called upon to show Maria’s roommate around the city. Maria wasn’t even supposed to be
home, but she was grounded by bad weather. She was invited to join them on the tour, but her first impression wasn’t promising. Maria said, “I didn’t like him at all.” By the end of the night, everything changed. While at the landmark Hancock building, Maria proclaimed to her roommate “I think I’m going to marry this guy. Jayme obviously felt something special was happening, too. From the moment they met he knew, “she was really different and I’d never met anyone like her.” Maria was leaving the next day, but he asked her to have lunch as soon as she returned. After they had been dating for about six months, Jayme was transferred to Iowa. Maria had been furloughed from the airlines after the 9/11 tragedy, so she followed him a few months later. Moving in together before a wedding ceremony did not sit well with her very traditional Kentucky family. Maria was faced with a decision. She told Jayme “she needed a ring”. United had called her back and Jayme was adamant that “he didn’t want to be married to a flight attendant.” So, she immediately packed up and left. Two weeks later, Jayme was ready with a proposal straight out of a romance novel. Alone again, he realized that he “didn’t want the single lifestyle anymore. All I wanted was a small town girl with big city dreams and a strong moral fiber.” Maria adds, “He knew he had to go big!” Maria was on a trip to San Francisco when Jayme called. He had always promised her a grand night on the town in Chicago and convinced her to meet him there. Maria just knew he was going to propose. Jayme was waiting for her in baggage claim with a dozen roses. He instructed, “Don’t ask any questions.” When they arrived at the Doubletree Hotel in downtown Chicago, Jayme showed her to a suite. A beautiful dress was waiting for her along with champagne and chocolate covered strawberries. Maria got ready and

went downstairs. Jayme was waiting with a horse and carriage. On their leisurely trip through the city, Maria shared, “People were already shouting congratulations to us even though nothing had happened yet!” The carriage pulled up in front of the Hancock building in remembrance of their first meeting; she had eventually shared with him the comment she made that night so the significance of that location was clear. Jayme escorted her to a table in the legendary Signature Room on the 95th floor. Despite all of the trappings, dinner was over and Jayme had still not proposed. Maria was impatient and blurted out, “Well, are you going to propose to me or not?” Jayme was still playing it cool and suggested they continue the conversation in the magnificent Signature Lounge. The staff greeted him by name, but Maria just assumed he was a frequent guest because of his business. At a window
table with a gorgeous view overlooking the city, another dozen roses appeared. She couldn’t figure out why he kept telling her to “take another
drink”. It turned out to be the signal for their special song (Colorblind by Counting Crows) to be played as a prelude to his proposal, classically

delivered down on one knee. They were married about a year later in August of 2003. Over 300 people attended their Kentucky ceremony with Maria’s huge, multi-generational family. A reception followed in Jayme’s hometown of West Branch, Iowa. Since his dad was the mayor, the event was announced in the local newspaper and brought over 500 people to join their celebration! Although Maria wanted children right away, Jayme had a different plan. He suggested a compromise, “How about a getting dog?” Enter Bodie, a purebred Weimaraner who became their first family member. But, life has a way of throwing curve balls. Jayme is a survivor of testicular cancer and they thought it would take extraordinary means for them to have children of their own. Much to their surprise, Maria found out she was pregnant a scant three weeks later. That was the first miracle. They are currently blessed with three children – Austin (8), Luke (6) and Anaiah Mae Hope
(1) – each a miracle in their own right. Jayme and Maria are fervent believers that these miracles provide testimony to their strong Christian faith combined with the multitudes of prayers that were answered countless times against all odds. Austin was born with a genetic disorder called 22Q deletion (also known and DiGeorge Syndrome), causing poor development of multiple body systems. Most of these kids are born with major cardiac defects and immune deficiency disorders resulting in a very short expected life span. (Visit www.dempsterfamilyfoundation.org for more information.) Maria shares, “This kid is amazing! I am so grateful for the new outlook on life that he has given me. Austin has overcome so many hurdles and obstacles in his little life that it overwhelms me at times.” Born with a cleft palate and a severe heart defect, Maria had to sleep sitting up with Austin over her shoulder because he would frequently stop breathing. He was deaf and was
expected to be blind by three years old. He developed a tumor that was anticipated to replicate all over his body. Yet again, prayers were answered with more miracles. Austin can both see and hear. His heart defect essentially corrected itself. Now, Austin is in the 3rd grade at Pathway School in Laguna Hills, recently winning an award entitled Truth Seeker. He is a gray belt in Jiu-jitsu at Gracie Barra in San Clemente that Jayme describes as “a transformative experience that gave him so much confidence. He became a different kid.” He loves drawing and has an amazing imagination. Jayme adds, “This is mind-blowing, considering a year ago he couldn’t even stand the touch of paper!” Austin loves anything science or robot related. He recently went to surf camp and is now itching to be a surfer. His parents call Luke “our little bean” and describe him as a wonderful, thoughtful and caring kid that is always looking out for others. Austin had not been diagnosed until Maria

was already pregnant with Luke. Since DiGeorge is often (but not always) genetic, the stress of worry made miscarriage a real concern. Thankfully, Luke did not inherit the defect. Jayme says, “He can be very quiet and serious and then shows his marvelous side of silliness where he will keep you laughing and smiling!” Luke is in 1st grade at Capo Beach Christian School. He is also a gray belt in Jiu-Jitsu, in the same class as Austin. Luke enjoys anything active, and has also been bitten by the surfing bug. He loves music and art, making a new drawing or craft everyday, and is a math whiz for his age. Maria exclaims, “When I homeschooled my boys two years ago, I couldn’t do Austin’s first grade math with Luke in the room. He would answer every question before Austin and cause major meltdowns!” Anaiah Mae Hope is sweet little girl with a big name full of meaning. Maria shares, “On New Years Day of 2012, Jayme and I wrote down the things we were praying for in the coming year. One thing I wrote was to grow our family and have a daughter.” In October, Maria found out that she was pregnant – a miracle in itself after already defying expectations and having two children. But, their excitement was short-lived. During the first ultrasound, the doctor told them that they were not able find a heartbeat and to expect a miscarriage. He instructed them to come back in two weeks. They prayed for help. Two weeks later they went back for another ultrasound. Lo and behold, there was a heartbeat blinking on that screen and a baby wiggling around! Later, they found out that baby was a girl. Also born without the defect, Anaiah’s name essentially means, “answered prayer.” Jayme beams, “She lights up our life with so much joy and happiness. A typical one year old, she is the happiest baby and loves her food.” Above all, Jayme is a man who treasures his family. Since 2004, Jayme has been working for ElectroRep Inc. as a very successful sales representative. He www.bestversionmedia.com
is grateful that his job allows him to be home every night and “be there for his family.” Besides spending time with his kids, he enjoys riding his Harley and pretty much anything to do with sharks. He shared, “I got hooked on sharks during my first cage-diving trip” off the Farallon Islands, 27 miles west of the Golden Gate Bridge. Jayme is currently enrolled in the School of Ministry at their church, Calvary Chapel San Clemente. This school year, he led a parenting group at Capo Beach Christian School. His particular passion is to inspire parents to place a higher priority on their family. The dream-shattering experience of having a special needs child was devastating for Jayme as a father. But, it made him much more committed to his role as a parent. “If you don’t raise your kids, the world will. Turn the phone off, get down on the floor and play.” Maria is delighted with her role as homemaker and mom. In addition, she now uses her classical voice training by singing with the Calvary Chapel worship team every Sunday and Thursday. Based on a suggestion from their worship leader, she is enthusiastically learning to play the guitar. She also leads a 5-week Mommy and Me music class throughout the year at the church. Maria volunteered this school year at Capo Beach Christian School in Luke’s kindergarten class, leading music and art activities on alternate weeks. In addition, she occasionally volunteers at Austin’s school (Pathway in Laguna Hills). Jayme and Maria also do a family night once a month through their church. They shared, “It’s a fun time to spend with your family putting the focus on your children with all other distractions gone.” The Kesslers moved to California from Iowa after Jayme was offered a transfer to California. Maria was so eager, that she rented a place sight unseen while Jayme was unreachable at a sales meeting. Since March of 2008, the Kesslers have lived in Solana (called upper Solana by the
locals). The move was a silver lining in an otherwise very dark cloud. Two months prior they had moved into a home in San Clemente that offered more space for their growing family. After only 35 days, they discovered it was completely contaminated with toxic mold and were told by the inspector to depart immediately. They lost almost everything – ending up in a hotel with Austin, the dog and a 7 months pregnant Maria. It was a nightmare! She found their Talega home on the Internet one night, called the realtor, and the rest is history. It is such an understatement to say that having a special needs child is a challenge. But, their Talega community has surrounded the Kesslers during some heart-wrenching situations. “This neighborhood has been such a blessing to our family. Since neither my husband or I are from here, we do not have any family living here.” Maria adds, “It’s nice knowing that your neighborhood is like a family that you can count on for anything.” The dramatic events of Halloween weekend in 2010 are a perfect example. On Saturday night, Maria left for church early with Luke to practice the music before the service. Jayme stayed home with Austin. As she pulled into the parking lot, Jayme called her in a state of panic. Austin had just suffered a major seizure and she needed to get home. Jayme had just gotten a new iPhone, but was not able to figure out how to dial 911 under the intense stress. Fortunately, the church was right up the street and Maria whipped the car around. The neighbors saw her flying through the streets like a Nascar driver and knew something was wrong. She remembers, “I wasn’t even out of my car before neighbors were running down the sidewalk. Someone got Luke out of my car as I rushed to Austin. He wasn’t in good shape and I knew we didn’t have time to wait for an ambulance. We put him in the car and raced to the hospital.” Continued... RECIPE TREASURES
Because of Austin’s disorder, there are many factors that can contribute to seizures. He finally regained consciousness, but then the endless battery of tests began. Austin just wanted to go home. Then, he went into another seizing episode and everything became chaotic. Maria recounts, “It’s really hard to describe to the overwhelming sense of helplessness as you watch your child seize uncontrollably and turn blue before you. There is absolutely nothing you can do but pray. Time seems to stop.” After they got Austin under control, he was put into isolation until they could determine what was happening to him. The hospital told us only one parent could stay, but neither parent was going to leave his side. Maria adds, “You know how awesome it is to not even worry about your other kid, because you know they are in good hands? Yes, that’s our wonderful neighborhood.” The pastors joined the Kesslers to pray over Austin.
The doctors came into his room the next morning, informing them that they couldn’t find anything and were releasing Austin. Incredible. Jayme and Maria took Austin home on Monday, grieving in the aftermath of the trauma. The house was messy, they were out of groceries and too exhausted too cook. As Jayme was walking to the front door to go out and get dinner, there was a knock. A neighbor heard what happened and brought them dinner. Later, the phone rang. A mom, barely an acquaintance, also heard about the situation and sent her cleaners over to clean the house. And there’s more. Sunday had been Halloween. Austin, a patriotic child, had decided to be an American flag. He was so excited to wear the costume Maria had lovingly crafted. She couldn’t face telling him that he would miss Halloween because he had to be secluded in a hospital room. He would be so disappointed to miss this special time with his brother!
So, she had decided not to say anything for the moment. The following Friday, there was yet another knock on the door. “A neighbor told me to put my kids in their Halloween costumes”. Maria describes the scene: “We take the kids outside in their costumes only to see all the neighborhood kids dressed up in theirs. They re-created Halloween for Austin so he wouldn’t know he missed it. All the kids followed behind him as he went door to door filling his candy bag. My husband and I cried our eyes out. It was one of the most amazing things I have ever experienced.” The Kesslers have only one thing to add. “We know what it’s like to lose everything and what it’s like to be abundantly blessed. We are beyond thankful for our neighborhood community and our church who have come along side of us and helped us through so many difficult times in our life.” Be inspired by their story. Anything is possible and miracles do happen!

A Guest Friendly Dog ARE YOU HAVING guests over for the holidays and you know
your dog is going to jump on them? Before someone like Grandma or someone’s 2 year old gets knocked down and hurt, why not teach proper greeting habits? There are several ways you can teach your dog to sit or a “four on the floor behavior” before they are allowed to greet anyone. Jumping is a natural behavior that is most often reinforced by owners. That’s why dogs continue to do it. Some dogs jump to greet humans the way they greet other dogs by licking their face; other dogs use it as a way to control humans and may growl or snap when pushed off. No matter the reason, jumping behaviors can be changed almost immediately without having to knee the dog, bonk him in the head, step on his toes, hollering or use any kind of physical punishment. Look at it this way – how would you prefer your dog to greet you and other people? Sitting is the best option. Be consistent. Dogs are like Las Vegas slot machines. They keep trying to jump because at some point they hit the jackpot and you give them attention. Don’t deposit your coins into a behavior you don’t like! If the dog is jumping on you, the first exercise is to remove all attention. Get
some yummy treats. Turn your side toward him and take a couple of steps away from him. Be quick – click & treat, say “YES” or make a kiss sound before the jump and place the treat on the floor. Stand up straight. Stay calm and repeat several times. If the dog is staying calm and not jumping, then slow the reward. If he jumps, just ignore and step to the side. Don’t reinforce the jump/sit. If you give any attention while the dog is jumping, you are reinforcing the bad behavior. Proof the good behavior by creating
situations where your dog will want to jump and begin the exercise as before. If you are not in the mood to train, then put your dog on a leash or in a crate or pen. Another option is to teach your dog to go to his “place”. Setup a training session. Get a mat, leash, collar and training treats. You can “shape” the behavior for the dog going to the mat. In the beginning, you can lead him to the mat and reward with food. Throw the food on the mat to reinforce the spot. Try and slowly move away from the mat only after the dog is driving to the mat quickly. Slowly move away from the mat, still throwing food on the mat. After going to the place (mat, bed, etc.) is solid, have a helper stand in the doorway. Reward your dog for staying on the mat. Be sure to do this on a leash. Remember to release your dog before he gets up so he can know when it is okay for him to get off the mat. Slowly lead up to a helper opening the door, knocking on the door, and ringing the doorbell. Don’t rush it! The key is being consistent. No jumping, period. Once I had this behavior solid, I taught my dog “give me a hug”, because sometimes I can’t live without getting hugs from my dogs. Even little dogs like Scout need to be taught not to jump on people. Scout is a 4-year-old neutered male, white MaltiPoo & Shitzu mix. He has lived with another dog and two children. He likes playing with his doggie friends. His parents had an emergency move and had to find other living accommodations for him. Scout would love to sit in your lap and he enjoys long walks.
