It seems it was barely the 1st of January before the holly was gone and the Valentine's Day paraphernalia started to appear. It was very annoying, at least initially. Then, there was that cellophane bag of candy hearts with cute sayings. What a memory jogger to stimulate a flashback to another time! Do you remember the joy of getting those valentines from all the kids in your class and laughing at those sayings? (Do kids even do that anymore?) The simple act of giving a card or piece of candy was so special. Perhaps Valentine's Day shouldn't be about getting fancy gifts or going to an expensive dinner once a year, but about all those acts of consideration and kindness for those we love throughout the year. How about the hot cup of coffee that your spouse brings upstairs on a cold morning when you just want to stay under the covers a few minutes longer or their trip to fill up the gas tank so you don't have to worry about it. Or maybe the times that a loved one picks you up at airport after a cross-country flight and a week away from home so you see a smiling face instead of a nameless shuttle driver. We invite you to perform a random act of kindness, or two or three, this Valentine's Day. Show up and be present for those you care about. Put the phone or tablet down and turn off the television (you can still record your favorites for later). Time with you is likely to be better than any gift from a store. And you can’t be there for others unless you take care of yourself. Consider being inspired by our two companion articles on intention to create a personal or family intention as a gift that will keep on giving! Happy Valentine’s Day,

Talega Block Party Update
City & Local Contacts Despite the Recent Rain We Are Still In a Drought
In an effort to decrease water usage, many homeowners have been considering replacing your natural grass with California friendly drought resistant plants and synthetic turf. Any changes to front yard, side yard or rear yard landscape must be approved prior to installation by the Talega Maintenance Corporation’s Design Review Committee (DRC). Synthetic turf may be used in front yard landscape in addition to side areas and backyards. The Talega Architectural Guidelines state the following: 1. Synthetic turf may be used in front yard landscaping, only as an enhancement, accessory to or to complement the main landscaping features and not as a major focal landscaping feature. 2. Turf to be installed within a border such as a concrete strip, brick planter, etc.
SAN CLEMENTE POLICE SERVICES is one of the most water-intensive plants in your landscape. Its high water use and frequent maintenance make it a timeconsuming and expensive yard option. In fact, the average residential customer spends about 60% of their water on outdoor irrigation. By changing turf to a California Friendly yard of drought tolerant plants you can save water and money. To help with turf removal projects, rebates are available for $2 or more per square foot of turf removed. This increased turf removal rebate is being provided in response to Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr.’s emergency drought declaration. Important Note: First apply to the DRC for approval. Once the landscape plan has been approved, then apply for the Turf Removal Program.

WEALTH MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES
Review Your New Year’s Resolutions WE ARE NOW in the 2nd month of the New Year 2015. Like many people you might have made a New Year’s resolution to lose weight, go to the gym more ofte or get your financial life in order. If you made a list, it’s time to check your progress. Financial resolutions can be especially difficult to stick with because – like eating and exercising – our spending, saving and investing habits tend to be tied more to our emotions than to our logic. Here are some tips for keeping your financial resolutions:
› Form new habits by tying them to current behavior. If you have a regular system for paying bills, then make a “bill” for your financial savings goals and pay it first. Make a contribution to your IRA or retirement accounts. Or add to your children’s or grandkid’s college savings accounts regularly.
› One of the easiest ways to keep your saving and investing goals on target is to set up automatic deposits to your investment accounts. Automatic payroll deductions for 401(k) contributions are great examples – you never see the cash and don’t have to write a check, but you see your account balance steadily grow. It is easy to set up automatic deposits to almost all kinds of savings and investment accounts. ere your financial resolutions ›W simple, achievable and realistic? Make adjustments to your resolutions to have goals that are really important to you and your family. If you are serious about improving your financial situation, do some homework, crunch some numbers and put your plan in writing.
›B reak your plan down into smaller steps. Trying to make too many changes at once will leave you feeling overwhelmed. Instead of trying to implement resolutions for the entire year all at once, add one or two goals every quarter. ›W ork with a “coach” to keep you accountable to your plan – perhaps your spouse or your financial advisor. A “buddy system” approach will increase your odds of continuing success. Just like a weight-loss program, a regular weigh-in or check-in with your coach will motivate you and help keep you on track. If you would like a free and no obligation review of your financial resolutions, please check out our website at www.enmeier.com or call Arlon Enmeier at 949-633-3336.

WELLNESS TALK
Setting Personal Intention BY JEANNE MCCORMACK
AT THE END of
each year, much to the dread of my dear husband, I always take stock of where I am and where I am going. I don’t make resolutions per se, but I do try to bring an intention into focus. Intention. What does this really mean? If I look up the definition of “intention” in Webster’s Dictionary it states,
Calvary Chapel San Clemente bringing the timeless message of grace for today’s world
“The thing that you plan to do or achieve; an aim or purpose.” Hmmm. Okay that sounds good, but what if we take a more 2015 approach to intention? The leading edge definition of intention deals with deliberate intent or, more plainly, the ability to create your own outcomes in life by focusing your thoughts on the desired effect. In their book, The Amazing Power of Deliberate Intent, Esther and Jerry Hicks define intention as, “ Having a deliberate intent for an end result while at the same time, tending to the balance of your energy along the way. It is much more about (the) balancing of your energy than it is about goal setting or focusing on end results.” Intention is looking at the vast array of possibilities and choosing what is right for you. So think about what you want to bring to your life right now. Focus on that area. Make an intention to bring that focus into fruition. To further empower intention, add the feel good endorphins of belief to the equation. Beliefs are simple thoughts that we think over and over. It can be as simple as, “I always feel better after I exercise!” Or perhaps, “When I take care of my body, I have more energy to enjoy my life!” And when you think these thoughts, remember a time when you really felt those feelings. Maybe you remember a beautiful summer day of body boarding or surfing at the beach, leaving you with that sun kissed glow. Or
maybe you recall the moment you crossed the finish line of your first 10K. Search for a time when you felt healthy and strong, full of vigor: a time when you absolutely loved your life. With that wonderful feeling conjured up, set the intention you want to bring into your life. In Thailand, the people call this praying with your heart. In her book, The Happiness Project, Gretchen Rubin states that genuine happiness is derived from learning and growing. So why not set your intention of a healthy body and try something new. Always wanted to paddle board or row? Now’s the time. Take up the practice of yoga, pilates or barre. Sign up for ballroom dancing or go for an adrenalin high and try rock climbing or aerial arts. Only you know what floats your boat. What is it that you want to bring into your life in 2015? Bring awareness into your life. Set an intention with the idea that you will achieve your goals with balance and joy. And, just maybe, you’ll get an extra happiness boost by trying something new.
Thank you, San Clemente, for voting us your favorite 6 years in a row!

Considerations for Rescuing or Adopting A Dog Are you thinking about rescuing or adopting a dog from an animal shelter or a rescue organization? First, take a deep breath! Ask yourself some very important questions: WHY DO I want a dog? As a companion for your children, companion for another dog or maybe a running partner for you? Do you have children or grandchildren in the picture? How old are they? Does anyone have allergies? Would a puppy, young, mature or senior dog best fit into your family? Is it a small, medium or large dog you would consider? Do you have a preference for long or short hair? Is regular grooming needed? Does the dog like other dogs (or cats if that’s an issue)? What is the current health of dog? Once you’ve answered these questions, there other things to think about in selecting the right dog for your situation. Costs for basic care, food, toys or miscellaneous items can be upwards of $1,000 a year. Are you prepared for unforeseen medical expenses? You also need to take into account the size of the outdoor space and height of fencing required. A very important consideration is your energy level and matching it with the appropriate dog. If you like to hike and are active, then you don't want a couch potato. Likewise, you don't want a dog that is ready to go all the time when you like the leisurely lifestyle. And make sure you are prepared to make sure the dog’s needs are met on a regular basis. How much of the time
will the dog be left alone? Will everyone be gone for the full workday, 6 to 8 hours, 1 to 4 hours, not at all or somewhere in between? Are you committed to training, potty training, basic manners and leash manners? Are there any possible lifestyle changes? What if you have to move? If you are thinking of having a new baby, then it's important to lay plans at least six months ahead of the baby's arrival. Do your homework on the facility or organization that you are considering as the place to get the dog? Do they have knowledgeable staff or volunteers able to assist you in your quest? Or do they let you flounder? Is the facility clean? Do they seem to have done a complete assessment on the dog? Research! Read books about dog physiology. Don't Shoot the Dog! The New Art of Teaching and Training by Karen Pryor is a clear and entertaining explanation of behavioral training methods. The Other End of the Leash by Patricia McConnell shares a revolutionary, new perspective on our relationship with dogs by focusing on our behavior in comparison with that of dogs. Explore the books and DVDs by veterinary behaviorist Dr. Sophia Yin. The website www. AKC.org is a great resource on different breeds. This is just an outline of some thoughts to ponder before you adopt any dog. The answers your family comes up with will help you to find the perfect match. At our shelter, we do a complete behavioral assessment of every dog to help find the right match. Jasper and Todd were found on the streets of San Clemente and are a very bonded. Jasper is the shyer of the two but once he comes out of his shell, he is Mr. Personality. These two are the cutest, great walkers and love to be in a nice warm lap. Esther Horn is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer and is the dog trainer for the San Clemente Dana Point Animal Shelter. Visit esther@handsonpaws.com or call 949-235-3320 for more information.

FEATURE
relationship, and they had their first date on September 30, 1994. Kristine moved back home to Hacienda Heights, California, after receiving her Bachelor of Arts degree in English. They had a long distance relationship while Craig obtained his Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and moved back home to San Pedro, California. Kristine said, “We dated for a total of six years and were married on the 6th anniversary of our first date, in 2000.” The proposal also had a humorous twist. Kristine’s parents were going on a tour of the famous cities of Europe to celebrate their own 30th wedding anniversary. Craig and Kristine were invited to join them. Unknown to Kristine, Craig had already asked them for their blessing to get married and was on the lookout for the perfect place and time to pop the question during the trip. In fact, her parents were tasked with getting the ring to their destination safe and sound ahead of time. “In case the ring might have set off the security sensors,” Craig said, “I didn’t want to end up proposing
at a TSA checkpoint.” Rome and London weren’t quite right. Then, Craig spotted the ideal location in France, just outside of Paris in the picturesque country town of Boulogne. During a sightseeing excursion, the tour guide drove past the Le Grande Cascade, a landmark known as one of Napoleon Bonaparte’s favorite restaurants. It was on a lake surrounded by an idyllic park with a beautiful, cascading waterfall – just right for the big moment. Kristine describes, “It was uber-fancy and really expensive. They even had a pillow for my purse!” The idea of two young, inexperienced people in such a place still makes them both laugh like crazy. Amazingly, Craig was able to score a reservation for the next day and planned to propose at sundown by the waterfall. But, it was getting late and the servers kept bringing more courses. He was running out of time. Kristine was in heaven enjoying the gourmet meal and didn’t want to miss anything. Finally, he was able to entice her away from the food by convincing her that they needed to
go and watch the sunset outside instead of through the full-length window by their table. Two hours later and after six courses, Craig got down on his knee and asked Kristine to marry him. In her excitement and through tears, she accidentally exposed the only remaining roll of film as she was putting it into the camera to take a picture memorializing the moment. So, they went back into the restaurant to call a cab. Explaining the situation to the allegedly French-only speaking cab driver appeared futile. Kristine

fter meeting Kristine and Craig Kooper, it only takes a few moments before their commitment to the community on many levels becomes obvious. From the Koopers’ newly established basketball academy to Kristine’s involvement with the San Clemente Junior Woman’s Club, it is clear that they both understand that it’s not about them but about what they can do for others. They exhibit a pervasive sense of humor, with laughter punctuating their entire conversation. Kristine met Craig at college in 1994. Kristine was in her last quarter at University of California, Santa Barbara. Craig had transferred there during that same quarter to finish his degree after attending junior college. Their story
demonstrates that you never know when or where your true love will appear. Craig was standing in line with Kristine to pay their tuition bills. He was bleeding from the knee down from a bicycle accident, after swerving to avoid hitting another student that walked right in front of him, on the way to the Administration Building. Craig asked Kristine to save his place in line so he could go and wash up. He shared with a grin, “We met paying bills and we’ve been paying them ever since!” After taking care of business, Craig waited for her in front of the building to get her number. Since her own bike was parked in the back, Kristine needed to go out that way and they missed each other. A few hours later that same day,

their paths crossed again at the campus Post Office. Craig was walking up the stairs ahead of her. Kristine jokingly yelled up at him, “Are you following me?” That was the start of their

finally said, “fiancè, fiancè” – the only French she could think of at the time. They managed to instruct the driver to find a store to buy a new roll of film so they could return to take a picture of the engagement spot, albeit with darker light conditions than the actual event. Married for over fourteen years now, the couple has two sons – Cameron (11) and Braden (9) – that Craig proudly calls “their greatest accomplishments.” Craig says, “Cameron lives and breaths sports.” He is a natural athlete and always does exceptionally well in sports. He just finished a season of Friday Night Lights Flag Football (a league launched last year by San Clemente at Vista Hermosa Sports Park), a new and fun experience for him. Cameron also plays Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) basketball. The ten-month season for this traveling team culminates with a national tournament in Las Vegas each summer. Always a good student, Cameron recently made the Superintendent’s honor roll in the first quarter of his 6th grade year with math as his favorite subject. And he has an incredible memory. At the tender age of 5, Cameron learned all of the states in alphabetical order and their placement on a U.S. map in only three days! Braden enjoys playing sports with his friends, too. He also played Friday Night Lights Flag Football and is just about to begin his National Junior Basketball (NJB) winter season. Craig will be coaching his team. Kristine explains,
“Braden is so multi-dimensional and has an inquisitive mind. He enjoys a variety of things including science (his favorite subject), fishing, origami, paper airplanes and Legos®. He endlessly studies YouTube videos on how things work or how they are made. He is a problem solver and looks for solutions. He’s always creating something and loves coming up with his own games.” Craig spoke about another aspect. “Braden knows he wants to run his own business. He started a company with a friend to create an illustrated series of books – topics have included calendars, vacation destinations and even butterflies. He’s a process guy. He figures out how to make something, then goes out and tries to sell it.” Quite the budding entrepreneur!
Craig is currently the Practice Director of Talent Acquisition at Aviana Global Technologies, voted one of the fastest growing companies by the OC Business Journal, which offers a wide variety of technology-based business intelligence solutions to organizations in all industries. His responsibilities include recruiting to fulfill the staffing needs of the company’s clients, for either direct hires or temporary resources for contract engagements. Craig is grateful he has a job that allows him to spend quality time with the family. Kristine describes Craig as being more of a “big picture thinker” and herself as being “very task and detail-oriented.” She is self-employed as a Certified Real Estate Transaction Coordinator, using these skills to organize and prepare all the paperwork necessary for closing escrow, and is looking to expand this business. She also has a direct sales business as a founding distributor with Healthy Habits Global, a healthy coffee and chai tea company. The products are 100% organic, enriched with high levels of antioxidants and phytonutrients. (Visit www.healthyhabitsglobal.com/ kooper for more information.) While their vocations are important, Craig and Kristine share an unwavering passion for philanthropy that holds significance in their lives. They jointly own the San Clemente Basketball Academy, LLC. This program was introduced last year to develop the fundamentals of

basketball for the youth in the community through weekly basketball clinics. A basketball player in both high school and college, Craig coached both their boys for the last eight years as a youth sports volunteer. “My goal was to make sure they got the opportunity to learn the sport before having to deal with what goes along with it. Now, they can figure out how to work through realworld type challenges with coaches and other players.” Through this experience, Craig observed the need for kids to develop best practice skills beyond the technical aspects of the game. Starting with a small group of parents that requested him to continue coaching their sons, the membership has grown as word of the results spread. The format does not emphasize competition. There are no scores. The accent is on developing confidence, good sportsmanship and team playing skills. Drills and scrimmages reinforce the basic skills of the game. “We really wanted to cater to kids in our community. The kids that have been coming are the ones that initially struggled the most and were ready to quit because everyone else was so much further ahead. Now, these kids are doing fantastic – both in the way they play the game and how they have much more confidence. It’s so rewarding to see the improvement.” For more information, you may email ckkooper@ me.com or visit www.facebook.com/ sanclementebasketballacademy. Kristine is a very active member of the San Clemente Junior Woman’s Club (SCJWC), volunteering her time to their diverse group of charitable causes. She is already working with the club to prepare for their largest annual fundraising gala in March. (Stay tuned to our Calendar of Events for details.) The SCJWC, established in 1948, is a chapter of the General Federation of Woman’s Club – one of the world’s largest and oldest nonpartisan, nondenominational, women’s volunteer service organizations – founded in 1890 and chartered by the 56th United States Congress in 1901. (Visit their website at www.scjwc.org for more information.) Craig lovingly explains, “Kristine is a do-gooder and I mean that in the best possible way. She is always doing things www.bestversionmedia.com
for others and puts others ahead of herself. People call her when they need something and she does her best to help.” Kristine adds, “The SCJWC supports so many wonderful organizations. But my favorites are the families in need. Every dollar makes such an immediate difference and goes a long way.” Three years ago, Kristine started doing annual holiday toy delivery to CHOC hospital with the boys. This year, other families joined them to have an even more meaningful impact and lift the spirits of the children that are suffering with lifethreatening conditions. The family enjoys walking along the San Clemente Beach Trail, usually starting at North Beach (the kids love to get the shave ice at Kaylani Coffee) and going as far as time permits. Kristine says, “It’s therapeutic. You just walk along, listening to the waves crash. It’s so calming.” Craig and Kristine go to the gym together whenever they can. Although date nights are less frequent than they desire, the couple enjoys a nice dinner and a movie as the opportunity allows. Craig is a die-hard Dallas Cowboys fan. When he has the chance, he is likely to be watching a Cowboys football game with their two sons. For the last couple of years, the family has taken day trips the Cowboys Oxnard training camp. Cameron and Braden were delighted to get autographs and pictures of their favorite players. This year, they are planning to extend the trip to an overnight so they can enjoy a more leisurely outing. Craig is also a lifelong Lakers fan. But the boys support Oklahoma City Thunder because of Kevin Durant (a good role model). Cameron also loves the University of Oregon Ducks with their super-cool uniforms! In December 2013, the family enjoyed
a weeklong trip to Walt Disney World for the holidays. “It was the trip of a lifetime to date for our family of four. This was the one bucket list item that we really wanted to fulfill while the kids were still young enough to appreciate it, yet old enough to remember it”, Kristine explained. Craig and Kristine have also recreated vacation traditions from their respective families. Craig remembered the fun of annual summer trips to a big rental house on Lake Tahoe with his entire family – grandparents and cousins included. In 2012, his family revived the tradition and moved the location to Mammoth. Although the group is too large to stay in one place, the whole extended family is there – all 30 of them! Kristine visited San Francisco, Monterey, Carmel and the Great America Theme Park in San Jose with her parents for years as a child. This past August, the Koopers had a great time experiencing these destinations with their boys, as well as Kristine’s parents. The Koopers moved to Talega in 2004. After residing in Aliso Viejo for a few years, they had decided it was time to purchase a new home. The realtor persuaded them to check out other neighborhoods in south Orange County. Craig didn’t even want to look in San Clemente, thinking it was way too far south and a long commute from his job in Irvine at that time. The minute they drove in to Talega, Kristine took a deep breath and said, “Oh, I think I really like it here! We knew it was the place for us. We just knew.” Talega has more than lived up to their expectations. According to Kristine, “We have set down our roots here, and believe this is a great place to raise our family. The schools are great, it’s so close to the beach and the people in the community are so friendly.” Craig chimed in, “There is also such a strong sense of doing good for others in the community. Anytime you need anything, you can call on your neighbors. We love downtown San Clemente, too.” He adds, “Our focus in life is making our own community better, making lives better and teaching that lesson to the boys.“ That, in a nutshell, is the essence of their story. Keep your eyes open for this family, enjoying life in and around the town! FEBRUARY 2015 15
FAMILY FOCUS
Designing Yearly Intentions with Children BY DR. DUSTINE REY
DESIGNING CLEAR INTENTIONS for you and as a family can
have a powerful impact - on motivation, optimism, connection and self-worth. Creating annual intentions is a way to focus on the deliberateness of what we plan to experience and feel. Our intentions provide a course of action that we plan to follow, preparing us to respond and to create. What
are you intentionally creating for 2015? Setting intentions with children is a fun, easy and often artistic process that may take a bit of practice. First, talk to your children about moments that feel good as a family. If they are old enough, allow them to write these moments down. List at least three or four. Include photographs for more reflection and fun discussions. Some families have reported moments such as playing in the neighborhood, conversations in the car, walking to school, bedtime routines, cooking together and even the absence of conflict (such as sibling arguing and tension over homework). Then, reflect on the theme of what feels good within your family. Try to connect it to an emotion that the whole family can agree upon and be excited about experiencing. It might be helpful to provide a short list of ideas such as love, playfulness, gratitude or compassion. If children can identify a desired outcome, then all you have to do is show them what causes the emotion. Some examples are feeling connected, secure, playful, funny or curious. Other ideas include everyone being patient, expressing gratitude for each other, having empathy for one another, spending quality time together in nature or creating a project together. The emotions experienced in these moments can be some of the intentions for the year. How about: “We will be kind with each other” or “We will express our gratitude before bed” or “We will be patient with ourselves and those who help us.”
Here is the best part, help your children illustrate what the family intentions look like. Provide art materials, alphabet stickers and photos to assist them in illustrating the family intentions in the form of an art piece. Poster and foam boards made great canvases for intention boards. Be sure to include written quotes said by the family when the intentions are experienced. For example: “I am grateful that mommy took me to gymnastics” or “I feel happy when I help bake” or “Games are more fun when we take turns” or “When we all do our jobs in our home, we have more fun together.” Finally, find a spot in the home to display your family’s intention for 2015. This may become one of your favorite art pieces in the house and a great discussion piece for visiting guests. Encourage your children to tell the story about its development and its meaning. This fun activity motivates and deepens the connection within a family. It is a meaningful annual tradition for preparing and planning a positive new year. taste and often hard to stomach in large amounts, just a few ounces of fresh beet juice a day can do a brain good. Also—it’s red. Kind of romantic? Prevent Mental Decline with Wine
S
ipping on certain beverages can not only make you smarter over time, but also improve your memory, mood and quality of sleep. Opting for drinks that contain naturally mind-enhancing organic compounds can be part of an overall mental health strategy. Here are five liquids that benefit your brain and body based on ingredients with well-studied healthy compounds. Consider including them this month for your Valentine’s day dinners! And yes—red wine made the list! Good Ol’ Fashioned Green Tea
As if we haven’t heard enough about the qualities of this perennial favorite beverage—one of the most ancient still enjoyed around the world. Green tea provides a treasure trove of compounds that apparently can turn us into slim, svelte, alert, athletic superbeings. Among its mind-enhancing
compounds are polyphenols such as EGCG, which has been proven to prevent certain neurotransmitters from degrading. In other words, green tea helps you stay young in the head— and maintain acuity in cognition. EGCG in green tea is also established to fend off anxiety and depression, giving the beverage the paradoxical quality of assisting with alertness while promoting calmness. Perfect for the Valentine’s Day romantic dinner jitters! Your Brain on Beet Juice
The potent juice of this deep-red root is rife with nitrites—compounds that support the relaxation of blood vessels. This results in an increased flow of freshly oxygenated blood throughout the body. Your brain directly benefits from this beet-induced influx of freshness, and the root juice can help avert age-related declines in cognitive function. While it’s a bit of an acquired
This information is not to recommend that you use wine to manage your mental state, as that could be a slippery slope to a hangover. Rather, research does support the fact that wine, in moderation, can boost your memory. It’s not that you get brighter from boozing—but that simple sipping of red wine can protect against inflammation-producing proteins. Such proteins are linked to memory disorders including Alzheimer’s. One study even revealed that moderate wine drinkers were approximately 53 percent less prone to suffer memory loss than their teetotaler friends. Apple Juice
Adults can benefit from reintegrating this favorite beverage of children. In fact, Apple juice may be even more beneficial for those over 50, according to studies. The juice contains high levels of acetylcholine, a compound linked to memory preservation. Acetylcholine is also an essential chemical in the brain’s process of learning. An apple a day can help you learn something new until you fall from the tree of life. For valentine’s day, you could try a little hard cider for an extra kick and still get some of the benefits listed above.
