From the historical significance commemorating the death of Ireland's revered patron saint to the religious significance of a feast day, St. Patrick's Day has evolved to a worldwide, fun-filled celebration of the heritage and culture of the Irish in general. So, it seems appropriate this month to honor those descendants of the immigrants that left their beloved Emerald Isle for our shores, bringing their love of life and poetic spirits to enrich America. In their memory, we offer both the true Irish (and those of us that yearn to be) an ancient Irish blessing. It is a fine example of the Celtic connection between the spiritual and earthly elements. As you read it, listen in your heart for the lovely and unmistakable lilt of the ancient Gaelic accent: May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face; The rains fall soft upon your fields And until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of His hand. If you are planning to attend a party, stay safe. Assign a designated driver or use a taxi/car service. And don't forget to wear a bit o'green on the day. Happy St. Patrick’s Day,

Home Maintenance: Is It Time to Repaint? Springtime is a good time to assess the exterior paint on your home. Is your paint faded or peeling? Are you thinking of changing the home paint color scheme? Keeping Talega looking beautiful and harmonious is the principal purpose and goal of the Design Review Committee (DRC). That is why approval must be given for any exterior paint changes to your home (including but not limited to garage doors, front doors, shutters, trim, gates and fences). The Talega Swim & Athletic Clubhouse has a set of Paint Color Books for review by owners who want to change a specific area or entire color scheme of their home. You will find the paint color chips for all of the color schemes in your neighborhood. As a homeowner, you can select paint colors from the existing paint colors within your tract / neighborhood or submit paint chips for any new color changes. When changing the entire color scheme for the house, the homeowners cannot select the same color scheme of the home to the right or left of their home or the facing neighbors. Any exceptions to this will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis considering proximity/ location, difference in plan elevation, etc. of the repeat color scheme.

their dogs is my passion. Pet first aid education to professionals and non-professionals alike is one very important aspect. When you think there could be a possible emergency, there are a few important considerations to keep in mind. Start by noticing any changes in your dog’s behavior. It can be the first clue. Is your dog throwing up, lethargic, having rapid shallow breathing, showing signs of confusion or exhibiting any strange behavior? Check your dog’s gums. Gums and mucus membrane tissue color can assist you in determining the immediacy of the situation. Are your dog’s gums normal? They should be a bubble gum pink. Pale or white gums can suggests anemia, the color yellow can indicate jaundice and blue/gray means a lack of oxygen. Associated with the gum color is the

capillary refill time. If you raise the upper lip and press your finger on the gum, the color should return within one to two seconds after releasing the pressure. In the situation of a blue/gray color, your dog could be going into shock. The definition of shock is a lack of adequate oxygen to the body tissues. Shock takes away the body's ability to regulate temperature. This condition can happen from a number of things such as an injury, heatstroke, infection or poisoning. Your dog may be conscious or unconscious. Shock can range from mild to severe – resulting in collapse, coma and even death. If you suspect your dog is in shock, the first thing is to take a deep breath and stay calm. Then, get your keys and head for the nearest veterinary facility that is open. Keep veterinary information readily available. Remember, you are the advocate for your

He is a very smart, happy dog with lots of energy and would make a great walking/hiking/running partner. When you enjoy a lot of activities with your dog, it is even more important to be aware of basic first aid skills in the event that the unexpected should occur. WEALTH MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES
What is Wealth Management? BY ARLON ENMEIER
WEALTH MANAGEMENT IS a comprehensive wealth advisory
and discovery process designed to uncover your full range of financial needs – from wealth creation to wealth protection to wealth preservation to wealth transfer and perhaps a charitable legacy – and to creating a plan to help get you there. The wealth manager will focus on what is most important to you, both financially and personally. He or she will look at all the major aspects of your financial life (including your specific values and goals), your time horizon, your income and liquidity needs, your plans for retirement as well as all specific wants and needs for you and your family. A “road map” will be developed to fit your definition of financial success and prioritize your goals into your personal timeline. He or she will take a comprehensive inventory of your current financial life, including strengths and weaknesses, and analyze specific areas for action to make sure that your goals and financial ability are aligned towards your attainment of long-term success and fulfillment. Based on this analysis, the wealth manager will develop a longterm plan focused on getting you from where you are today to where you want to be in the future. Through this process, he or she will address any items that need clarification, and make
alterations based on any additional information. This open, honest dialogue about your financial needs, beliefs, expectations and concerns is critical to a successful advisory relationship. To implement your financial future, the wealth manager will work collaboratively with you and your team of financial professionals to include your tax advisors, your estate attorney, and your insurance specialist. Collectively, they will outline the most appropriate strategy for all of the non-investment items as well as the investment action items that have been identified. Comprehensive wealth management is much more than simply putting together a suitable investment portfolio. Just as your life is never static, your financial well-being is never static. Your wealth manager will monitor all aspects of your financial life and assist you with adjustments along the way when suitable. He or she will help you maximize the effectiveness of your finances and make sure it stays in synch with your needs and lifetime goals. And very importantly, your wealth manager will help ease the anxiety of financial decisions and help give you the freedom and time to continue enjoying living your life to the fullest extent possible. Are you comfortable with your financial future? Have there been any changes with your financial life in the past few years? We offer a complementary review and second opinion to the readers of Talega Life. Feel free to call our San Clemente office at 949-276-6333 and visit our website www.enmeier.com for more information.

Come Grow With Us! An Interview with Dr. Nicky Magnuson, Principal, Capo Beach Christian School BY KAREN GARZA

rom the minute you walk into Capo Beach Christian School (CBCS), you can immediately tell that it is a very special place. CBCS represents a new generation of private Christian Schools, focused on academic excellence combined with an authentic Christian experience. The entire staff partners with parents to develop a rich learning environment that motivates students to participate, a rigorous curriculum that prepares children to excel throughout their lives and a spiritually mature community that promotes confidence in a Biblical world view of knowledge. The fledgling school, founded by parents, opened five years ago with modest group of 41 students and a mighty vision: “You are the light of the world – like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.” (Matthew 5:14-16)
Principal Nicky Magnuson explains, “That is the school verse and vision for every child who leaves our school. At CBCS, we make it our first priority to cultivate students who will be the light to the world, not only when they become adults, but as they nurture their relationship with Jesus at our school.” She adds, “When the doors of San Clemente Christian the school opened, no one anticipated that weSchool would be in

the position we are in today. But God had other plans. The Lord has richly blessed us with TRIPLED enrollment over these last five years and we have reached maximum capacity in our primary classes. To say it plain and simple, we have outgrown our facility. And the desire to grow into a high school is unanimous. After much prayer and consideration, we know that San Clemente is exactly where the Lord wants us. He has provided us a building that aligns perfectly with our vision and has the capability to allow growth into a high school, making us the first Transitional Kindergarten through 12th Grade private Christian School in San Clemente.” With 70% of the current families already being from San Clemente, there is a huge demand for a Christian K-12 school in the city. Without a K-12 Christian school in San Clemente, a large number of families (particularly in Talega) are driving their kids up to 45 minutes to attend other schools. That being said, CBCS needs the help of the entire community to raise the funds to turn this goal into a reality. The build out plan has three phases. Phase I is to occupy the entire top floor and partial space on the first floor of the new building, located on La Pata next to Heritage Christian Fellowship. This will allow the new location to offer the full capabilities of the current school (Transitional Kindergarten through 9th Grade – including library, science lab, computer room and arts/music room. Another benefit of the location will be the close proximity to the wonderful Hermosa Sports Park for PE and afterschool sports programs. Phase II is to occupy the entire 24K square foot building allowing for expansion into a high school. These first two phases are targeted for completion by 2018, culminating with the first graduating senior class! Phase III is completely dependent on funding and includes the possible development of a 1.3 acre lot in partnership with Heritage Christian Fellowship for a playground and an expanded track and field program. An Advisory Board has been chartered to lead the

fundraising and community awareness efforts. Cody Lonsway, Advisory Board Chair, can hardly contain her excitement about the school. Her son, Holden (5), is a kindergarten student. “I feel so passionate about where we are headed that I started volunteering even before Holden was enrolled! There is such a sense of community in the school. My son knows every kid in every grade and he has already grown tremendously in his confidence,” Cody exclaimed. “These are really exciting times for the new San Clemente Christian School as we envision a place with all of the current specialties of CBCS. A group of parents, grandparents and community organizations have already personally committed the funds to get us started. But we still need $200K to complete the remaining tenant improvements. We invite parents and the community to be part of creating this legacy!” Cody adds. Even as the school grows to accommodate more students and more grades, they will intentionally remain a boutique school with small class size (maximum of 20 students per grade) and a 1:3 staff to student ratio. The architectural design of the new school supports this approach. This is the key to one of the critical hallmarks of their success, an individualized approach to developing
the unique abilities of each child. Ahna McClung is the President of the Parent-Teacher Fellowship and has three children enrolled at CBCS, ranging from 5th to 8th grade. “The entire staff is so committed to meeting each child wherever they are in their development and giving them every opportunity to find their strengths – from academics to athletics to the arts. Every child learns in a different way and the teachers know how to create the best experience for them to reach their full potential.” The 2-year transitional Kindergarten program, based on an assessment of each child’s situation, is another example. The renamed San Clemente Christian School will also allow for extending the emphasis on providing off-campus activities that offer a real-life perspective. Sophomores will complete local apprenticeships in their area of interest. Each senior will serve on a global six-week mission, as part of the Future Leaders in Pursuit of Community & Global Change Program. Other unique capabilities will include an aquaponics cultivation program, a university-level chemistry lab, a computer graphics/video editing program and so much more. Every donation, no matter how large or how small, is so important. Not only will donors receive a wide range of benefits based on the

amount – including the commemorative dedication of everything from benches to building corridors – all of their children will have first priority for enrollment. But the true heart of the school will remain unchanged. “Our school verse is not just for show. It really represents the young adults that we want to produce and ultimately send out into the community. We come alongside each family so every child that leaves our school will truly be a light into the world and will have developed their gifts to fulfill God’s purpose for their life.” Dr. Magnuson underscores with deep emotion. She adds, “It is clear that the Lord has a plan and purpose for San Clemente Christian School but we need your help to make it happen. If God has put it on your heart to be a part of the launching of this school with prayer, gifts, input or financial support please call me about this inspiring opportunity to be a part of history for our city and come grow with us!”

Gracie, Sr. is considered the founder and creator of modern Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. He adapted the fundamentals of Kodokan Judo, learned from famous Mitsuyo Maeda and Soshihiro Satake of Japan, with the techniques of Jiu Jitsu being practiced in Brazil at that time. Following a complex evolution, Gracie Barra (pronounced “bah-ha”) Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was born. In 1986, Master Carlos Gracie, Jr. started a school in Rio de Janeiro based on his father’s principles of leverage and efficiency. From the very beginning, Master Carlos integrated the principle of character building and the importance of taking proper care of your body. Jiu Jitsu came to the attention of the world in the early 1990’s. Royce Gracie won the first, second and fourth rounds of the Ultimate Fighting Championships – then a single elimination martial arts tournament – vanquishing his often larger and stronger competition across all other styles. Felipe started attending classes in Lake Forest, California (the U.S. headquarters for Gracie Barra). Some were

the same city in Brazil, Felipe and Kendy Guedes wouldn’t have met without coming to the same city in California. Since they were from opposite sides of the huge metropolis of São Paulo, their paths were unlikely to cross. Each made a far-reaching decision to move to Costa Mesa. This was the beginning of a shared life and two new, unexpected careers. After becoming a dentist in 2000 (at only 23 years old), Felipe was at a crossroads about his next move. He wanted to expand his horizons with some different experiences and was debating about moving abroad for a time. Australia and the United States were also under consideration. The DESPITE BEING FROM
influential factor was a relationship with a person he met at a Jiu Jitsu workshop in Brazil who was living in Costa Mesa and offered him help in making the transition. Without this Jiu Jitsu connection, Felipe probably would have ended up in Australia! Six months later, after saving enough money, he came to America and got a job in a Brazilian restaurant in Los Angeles. Felipe started attending Orange Coast College. As his command of the English language improved, Felipe eventually worked his way up from the most basic jobs to becoming the front-of-house manager with Outback Steakhouse in Irvine. It was a demanding schedule. Working in a restaurant helped Felipe
become immersed in the American culture, have fun and make numerous friends. But Felipe began to recognize that he didn’t feel any passion for his job. He was struggling with the decision on whether to stay here or to go back to Brazil and resume his career in dentistry. It was another turning point. Although Felipe had pretty much decided to return to Brazil, he wanted to keep working and save some money first. He thought it would be a good opportunity to restart his Jiu Jitsu training. Years ago in Brazil, he had studied Jiu Jitsu and it was an almost instant passion. But, he never thought that making Jiu Jitsu a career was possible. Here in California, the possibility became a reality. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is not just another martial art form; it is also a method that promotes physical fitness and character building in young people, creating the foundation for a way of life. Carlos

On the second day of the tour, Flavio and his wife Viviane were driving south on Pacific Coast Highway and the last stop was San Clemente. One of Flavio’s friends and students, a Marine based at Camp Pendleton, invited them to watch the sunset from the San Clemente Pier. Flavio exclaimed, “That was it! We fell in love with San Clemente!” Their first location opened in February of 2008 in a warehouse across the street from the San Clemente-Dana Point animal shelter. Kendy had been enjoying a marketing career in Brazil. When her younger sister expressed the goal of becoming an English teacher, Kendy reached out to a former friend who had moved to the U.S. a couple of years earlier for assistance. Kendy, another friend and her sister decided to take a six month long sojourn to America and moved to Costa Mesa. Kendy started working as an assistant at a salon in Newport Beach. She said, “I really loved it.” Kendy enrolled at the James Albert
taught by Master Carlos Gracie Jr. but most of his classes were with Flavio Almeida (one of Master Gracie’s protégés starting at the age of 13) Felipe was dedicated to doing whatever he could to help out the students and the studio. Flavio, a successful economist, reached the point of wanting to start his own school and approached Felipe to be his right hand man. According to Felipe, “It was a five-second decision to say yes!” Starting from scratch, the next step was to find a location for the school. Flavio and Felipe started a scouting tour

Cosmetology School in Newport Beach and experienced a double benefit. She explains, “It was an easier, better way to learn English and I discovered a passion I didn’t know I had”. Kendy received her license in 2003 and embarked on her new career as a hairstylist at the prestigious Jon Michael Hair Designs in Irvine, later joining Carlton Hair International at their Santa Ana Main Place and then the Shops at Mission Viejo location. Felipe also pointed out, “Kendy really has a gift for languages and also learned to speak Spanish”. With her native language of Portuguese, that makes her trilingual – a great asset here in Southern California. Felipe and Kendy met at the birthday party of a common friend in 2005. “It was love at first sight for both of us,” he said. They began dating immediately and spent the next several years of building a life together in Orange County. Felipe and Kendy were married in June of 2009. With both of their families living in Brazil, it was a very simple ceremony followed by a honeymoon on the romantic isle of Maui. That December, the couple traveled to Brazil for a family visit to celebrate both the holidays and their marriage. Felipe was still working at Outback Steakhouse, but ready to transition full-time to the school. However, the financial uncertainty of
leaving a secure job was a big concern for Kendy. Flavio and his wife, motivated by their vision, encouraged Kendy to take this leap of faith with Felipe. Felipe initially served as the Program Director at the school for about four years before becoming Flavio’s equal partner. They expanded by opening a Dana Point school in 2010. The San Clemente school opened in the current location of The Courtyards at Talega in 2012. Felipe became the full owner of San Clemente in late 2014. There are now about 300 students – ⅔ are kids (the youngest is 3 years old) and ⅓ are adults (the oldest is 69 years young). He is so grateful to his teaching team at the school, Professor Diogo Ferreira and Coach Ryan Ritcey. Flavio continues to operate the Dana Point location and Gracie Barra Association. Felipe and Flavio remain very good friends, collaborating on spreading the message about Jiu Jitsu and sharing many students. Felipe explained, “For me, it’s a dream come true to be able to support my family as martial artist and respected teacher of Jiu Jitsu.” Felipe also serves on the Gracia Barra Association to assist in the development of best practices, software for schools and ethics policies. He is a fourtime American National Champion, a Pan American Absolute Champion
at Purple Belt and a Bronze Medalist at the NoGi World Championships. Felipe also travels throughout North America, teaching seminars that assist other school owners to provide the best experience possible for their students. A group of kids ranging from 8 to 13 years old, committed to a rigorous training regimen, form the school’s competition team. Four of the students have won 1st place titles at the Kids World Kids Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Championships. Kendy had always enjoyed dancing, growing up with ballet, along with gymnastics. In Brazil, Jiu Jitsu was not considered a suitable activity for women. She started to go to the school for companionship and says, “I really enjoyed the chance to hang out with other Brazilian people. And then I thought I’d try it myself. It would also give us something to do together.” It turns out she really likes it and now encourages other women to take classes, particularly the self-defense benefits for girls. She explains, “Jiu Jitsu is an amazing sport for everyone. Because it uses techniques based on leverage and efficiency, you don’t have to be a big or strong person. That is SO important for women and girls in these times.” Kendy now assists Felipe with the school and he proudly says, “She was very consistent with her training and has her Purple Belt.” (That’s the third level out of five with the highest level being the coveted Black Belt. The Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is considered to be so prestigious that the minimum age is 19 years old.) The Guedes were blessed with their adorable daughter, Giovana, in 2012. A very active and engaging 2½ year old, she keeps her mom very busy! Kendy continued to work part-time at the Carlton Hair Salon in the Mission Viejo mall until she opted for the role of full-time mom in 2014. Kendy regularly takes Giovana for outings at the studio. Giovana already knows the all the warm up exercises after watching so many the classes from the vantage point of her stroller! Felipe clearly has a heart for helping others and it shines out from his eyes. Going back to his volunteer work back

in Brazil as a dentist treating countless poor kids, he is on a self-proclaimed mission to make a difference in the lives of others through the practice and principles of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Kendy ardently supports this cause. Felipe humbly describes, “With dentistry, you are helping people fix their smiles and it changes everything for them. Jiu Jitsu is just a different tool to improve people’s lives. We have served over 1300 San Clemente families, both adults and kids, through the work that we do. We participate in so many events around town that include churches, schools and Camp Pendleton.” Felipe’s particular calling is to provide kids with the tools to deal with the pervasive issue of bullying and believes that Gracie Barra Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in uniquely suited to address this need. “Jiu Jitsu is very special. The emphasis is not on fighting, but on preventing fights. We teach the kids how to fight so they don’t have to fight, giving them the confidence to defend themselves on and off the mat.” The symbol of a triangle, www.bestversionmedia.com
prominently used in the Gracie Barra logo (referred to as the shield), serves to illustrate two sets of core elements – mind (brain), body and heart (friendship); home, school and Jiu Jitsu. “The camaraderie and friendships the kids make on the mat are priceless. We also end each class ends with a Lifestyle Circle discussion based on topics related to family, school and proper nutrition. Bullying is a very common topic that we openly talk about,” Felipe described. “It’s not just about being a good fighter, it’s about being a good person.” In fact, Felipe has written a manual on bullying that is available on the school’s website (www.gbsanclemente.com) as a free download as a tool for parents to teach their own kids. He leads antibullying assemblies at schools all over southern California. Felipe’s powerful YouTube video, “No Bullying in San Clemente. The Martial Arts Solution from Gracie Barra Jiu Jitsu.” describes their three-step system: (1) walk away (2) stand up for yourself and (3) protect yourself. If you have a son or daughter
that is a victim of bullying, it’s well worth the 2½-minute viewing time. Jiu Jitsu is also another tool to give a helping hand to Marines and their families. Felipe conducts regular classes at the base to a core group of about 40 Marines between deployments. Jiu Jitsu gives them another tool to compliment their military training – both physically and mentally. While the dads are away on deployment, Felipe often serves as an additional male role model and coach to their kids, supporting the moms. When the dads return, the school gives them a place to apply what they’ve learned to do in a different way and assimilate back into their communities. Many have told Felipe about the benefits of Jiu Jitsu experienced by soldiers suffering the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder. The Guedes moved to Talega in December of 2011, after living in Irvine and then Dana Point. Felipe said, “We live in Santalana and moved here because we love the area and also because of my work. Our own families are back in Brazil and the community embraced us and became our families here. We help each other and support each other.” Kendy added, “There are so many great people, good schools and young families like us. You can’t ask for a better place to raise a family!” They share their home with a Betta Fish named Sushi. His predecessor was named Michael Phelps. Cute, right? Felipe summed it up beautifully. “We truly believe that if you do good for other people, good will come to you. And we are lucky enough to have a source of income that allows us to accomplish that. I am so grateful to live out my dream of teaching Jiu Jitsu and being able to use it as a tool to serve people working with their body, mind and heart to make a difference in their lives.“ To learn what Jiu Jitsu might do for you and/or your children, Felipe and Kendy are just the right people to help you explore this avenue for personal growth and have the same life-changing experience as two of our other featured families. You will enjoy meeting them no matter what you decide! MARCH 2015 15
FAMILY FOCUS
The Importance of Social and Emotional Development in Young Children BY DR. DUSTINE REY
SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH indicates there is a strong rela-
tionship between social-emotional learning, cognitive development and well-being. Children as young as 18 months exhibit compassion, empathy and altruism. Some schools have programs designed to help students better identify and manage their emotions, establish respectful caring relationships and resolve conflicts using non-violent means. A decade of worldwide academic research shows that high-quality social and emotional programs dramatically reduce aggression and increase social and emotional understanding among children who receive it. Children who have participated in such school programs are kinder, more
cooperative, inclusive of others, less aggressive and less likely to bully others compared to children who do not participate in such programs. These positive effects last for years. “At the Greater Good Science Center, we believe that these core competencies are crucial to our well-being in that they can serve as the foundation for creating a meaningful and successful life,” says Vicki Zakrzewski, University of California at Berkeley Greater Good’s education director. “But, at the same time, these skills have to be cultivated, because the environment can inhibit their development.” Practicing emotional regulation and other relational skills is important because these are the prosocial behaviors that will help young children become more engaged, get along with others and succeed in the world. Children learn these skills as early as preschool. Social and emotional research suggests that one specific trait – gratitude – not only helps people form, maintain and strengthen supportive relationships, but it also helps people feel connected to a caring community. The development of appreciation and a grateful perspective in preschool has lasting benefits into adulthood. Young adolescents (ages 11 to 13) exposed to a high-quality social and emotional programs are happier, more optimistic, have better social support, and are more satisfied – with their school, family, community, friends and themselves. Moreover, these teens (ages 14 to 19) are more satisfied with their lives and use their strengths to better their community. They are more engaged in their schoolwork/hobbies and have higher grades; as well as being less envious, depressed and materialistic. The early development of social and emotional strengths has clear value for a meaningful future and productive society. Schools and parents are in a partnership of

ave you ever seen someone who has a particularly strong chin or whose lower teeth are in front of his or her upper teeth? This is called an underbite. Three scenarios result in an underbite: (1) An underdeveloped upper jaw (2) An overgrown lower jaw (3) Both Not correcting an underbite can lead to jaw joint problems, difficulty eating and chipped or broken front teeth. Orthodontics can help avoid these problems and preserve your natural teeth – which is easier, preferable and less expensive than crowning your front teeth multiple times over the course of your life. Generally, underbites are best treated before age 10, while the upper jaw is malleable
and can be advanced non-surgically. After age 10, the jaw is generally set in it’s ways and can’t be moved without jaw surgery. One caveat to early treatment is that most children still have some baby teeth and therefore aren’t ready for a full set of braces. A second round of orthodontic treatment is indicated when all the permanent teeth have erupted (usually after age 12) to finish correcting the bite. That said, most patients and parents would agree that two rounds of braces are preferable to jaw surgery. If an underbite isn’t discovered until after age 10, parts of it can still be addressed. Mild underbites can often be fixed with braces and elastics; moderate underbites can be fixed with braces and extracting a couple teeth; the most severe underbites do require surgical correction. Because not all dentists are trained to look for bad bites, don’t hesitate to contact a Board Certified Orthodontist to ensure optimal treatment timing (no referral is needed). The ideal time for a consult is when your child is 7 or 8 years old, so make sure to call early. After all, catch an underbite at the appropriate time and you can often avoid jaw surgery!
