Dear Talega Residents, This month we have a rare treat for you with our Feature Family, the Turners. It is a wonderful story of a brave, adventurous and talented family who took a leap of faith and moved from London to Talega to build their already successful business here and get a taste of the California lifestyle. November is a month of shorter days, wonderful San Clemente sunsets, local high school football, maybe a chance to wear a sweater and, hopefully, some rain! It is the month of Thanksgiving and the birthday of the United States Marine Corps. According to Wikipedia, the modern Thanksgiving holiday tradition is commonly, but not universally, traced to a sparsely documented 1621 celebration at Plymouth in present-day Massachusetts. The 1621 Plymouth feast and thanksgiving were prompted by a good harvest. Though celebrating a good harvest is not the reason for it anymore, it has become a dear tradition in the United States. Did you know that Thanksgiving in the United States was observed on various dates throughout history? From the time of the founding fathers, until the time of President Abraham Lincoln, the date that Thanksgiving was observed varied from state to state. The final Thursday in November had become the customary date in most U.S. states by the beginning of the 19th century. Thanksgiving was first celebrated on the same date by all states in 1863 by a presidential proclamation by Lincoln. On December 26, 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed a joint resolution of Congress changing the national Thanksgiving Day from the last Thursday in November to the fourth Thursday. This year that date is November 24th. On November 10, 1775, the Second Continental Congress met in Philadelphia and passed a resolution stating that "two Battalions of Marines be raised" for service as landing forces with the fleet. This resolution established the Continental Marines and marked the birth of the United States Marine Corps. Before the beautiful community of Talega was created, it was originally a part of Camp Pendleton, our Marine Corps neighbor to the South. The U.S. Marine Corps has always been a valuable neighbor of San Clemente since the base was established. Did you know that in November 2005, the Board of the Heritage of San Clemente Foundation erected a monument to the Marine Corps in San Clemente? The life-sized bronze statue stands in Park Semper Fi, located in the Pier Bowl. This month, take a moment to visit the statue, or thank a Marine for their service.

REAL ESTATE
Living Trusts:
Why You Should Put Your Home in a Trust PRESENTED BY THE ECHELBERGER GROUP
E
ducation is an ongoing process, and one that I take very seriously as a real estate agent. Recently, I took a continuing education course on probate sales. What I walked away with was very simple, but very important information that I would like to share with you. Did you know that with proper planning through a trust, assets that you leave to your children may be protected from your children’s creditors and/or claim by their ex-spouse in the event of divorce? And as of January 1st, 2017, if your home is not in a trust, Medi-Cal can recover your home to offset any open claims. For some, this may seem far off still, but it is something to consider now. A living trust is created by a settlor and managed by a trustee for the benefit of a beneficiary. A settlor is virtually always the trustee and the sole beneficiary for life. A settlor of a living trust will remain in charge of everything, enjoy all the assets of the trust without limitation, and can change or revoke the trust or any of its provisions anytime the settlor wants. In the event of their death or incapacity, the settlor selects a successor trustee to step in. The new trustee manages assets of the trust for children or other beneficiaries. Trust assets may be distributed to the settlor’s beneficiaries outright, or held and managed for the settlor beneficiaries until some future time, age or event. It is not always the best idea to distribute assets outright to your beneficiaries. Why is it important? Probate is an expensive and time consuming court proceeding to get a judge’s signature to pass assets to beneficiaries if you don’t have a trust. A living trust avoids probate because a judge’s signature is not needed.
What are the other benefits of a living trust? • Prevents court control of assets at incapacity • Avoids conservatorship • Provides maximum privacy Manages and distributes to heirs with ease • Ensures government benefits to heirs (by placing inheritance in a sub-trust when necessary) • Provides peace of mind • Maximizes tax savings The purchase and sale of real estate property is probably one of the most important transactions that a person can make. What happens to your home and assets during your lifetime and after deserves the same level of attention. Simply put, a trust removes the burden of your heirs going through a court probate process (on average six months) to sell your home. Probate is not a mess that you want to leave to your heirs when it can be simply avoided by having your title held in your trust. I hope that this will at least open the door for a conversation regarding the protection of your home and your assets. Please remember that you should always check with your attorney or accountant before taking any action. If you want further information or resources regarding trust and probate law, please email info@echelberger.com. As always, if you are in the market to buy, sell or lease property, please contact Doug directly for a Free Home Valuation at (949) 463-0400.

Philanthropy & Community News A Child’s Dream. A Mother’s Love… An Idea On Point. What would you do if your little girl expressed a dream to learn ballet? Likely, you'd share special moments helping her try on her first pair of pink ballet slippers, watching her twirl in the perfect tutu, and clap proudly at her first recital. But, what if your daughter was one of the 500,000 children in America diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy? Eight-year-old Maddie Fragner made this difficult request in the fall of 2014. But, due to a premature birth and associated trauma to the brain, a resulting diagnosis of Cerebral Palsy (CP) requires Maddie to use a walker and leg braces. She is unable to carry out many activities of daily living still, let alone join a typical ballet class. Unwilling to say "no," or to accept the absence of local adaptive dance classes, Maddie's mother, Debbie, was driven to find a way to make her daughter’s dream come true. She dove headlong into research and discovered that several new rehab techniques were yielding very positive results for non-CP patients, but it was discouraging to find little national funding existing for Cerebral Palsy rehabilitation. Inspired to fill the gap in the world of pediatric Cerebral Palsy, Debbie launched the nonprofit Children's Cerebral Palsy Movement (CCPM), focusing on developing innovative CP-focused rehab therapies for children. CCPM's maiden initiative was the design of a therapeutic dance intervention, carried out in collaboration with partners at UCI, CHOC Children's Hospital and Chapman University. Now complete, the study’s preliminary data has been overwhelmingly positive. Early results show definite improvements in cognition for the children, and there are high hopes for similar results in physical function once the gait data has been analyzed. Equally important, perhaps, is how the children and families bonded and self-esteem soared. What's next for CCPM, while national awareness is being sought through the university’s publication of the study’s data? The organization is excited to transition the intervention to community classes for the children at the Pacific Coast Center for the Arts in Mission Viejo, while delivering resources, education and support to their caregivers.
CCPM Needs Your Help! If your heart encourages you to support children with disabilities in our wonderful community, your partnership is requested! A tax-deductible donation can be made securely at www.childrenscerebralpalsymovement. org. Or, to volunteer your time or talent, please call Debbie Fragner at (714)746-4085.

Across the Pond and All That Jazz! Meet your new neighbors,
the Turner family BY PAULETTE BRITTON
‘Rubbish,’ ‘Bonkers,’ ‘Give it a go’ and ‘Stuff it!’
to give it a go for a year. I can retire in three years from the brigade, so moving here in three years would have been better, but if you don’t use your green card you lose it. So we are giving it a year’s trial,” states Shaun.
hese aren’t phrases you hear every day unless you live in the United Kingdom, or next to someone who has recently transplanted themselves into the community of Talega. Meet your new neighbors all the way from London: Shaun and Katherine Turner and their two sons, Lewis (17) and Cameron (11).
T
He would love to get a job in the area as a firefighter. “I’ve got loads of experience in a very busy city fire brigade, but I don’t have California certification. I’ve spoken to someone at CAL FIRE and currently there is no reciprocity between California and even other states so you still have to jump through all of these hoops. They are trying to sort that out but I don’t think that it will be done before I will have to go back.”
Everyone has a unique story about how they arrived in the neighborhood but this family particularly comes with a bit of an extra twist. Katherine, lovingly referred to as ‘Katie’ by her husband (and with the professional stage name Katrina Murphy,) had the idea to apply for a green card and move from London with the desire to duplicate their highly successful entertainment company, Singers in Disguise, in the United States.
“Or, if we can make the business as successful here as it is in the UK; if we can get it even half as busy here as it is there, financially it would be okay for me to stay as well. But I’m finding it quite challenging to find ways to advertise the business successfully. In London, Google is the way to go. It literally transformed our business overnight. Our concept is not yet that well known here.”
Katherine received green card status for the family as an alien of extraordinary ability, a classification by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services granting a priority visa to an alien who is able to demonstrate “extraordinary ability in the sciences, arts, education, business or athletics.”
Katherine was born in North London and Shaun in East London. They met in a local bar on Christmas Eve through a Greek friend of Katherine’s who was translating a contract between the two for a bar that Shaun was buying in Greece. They married in 2004.
Katherine is a professional singer— both in opera and musical theater— as well as a performer and graduate of the Royal College of Music in London. She is most well-known for playing the lead role of “Christine” at the major West End production of Phantom of the Opera and “Carrie” in Carousel, and has been featured live on BBC television. Extraordinary ability, indeed! Shaun is a 17-year veteran firefighter with the London Fire Brigade. He is still serving in that capacity but his brigade has given him a one-year hiatus to move the family to California and see if they like it. “We decided
In 2014, during the wait for Katherine’s green card, the couple took a leap of faith and bought a vacation home in Dana Point. Katherine thought she would get her green card sooner and decided, “Oh stuff it, let’s get it.” Of course, the month after the purchase, she received notice that her green card application was accepted. They visited the East and West Coasts and decided California was the place for them! In April, Shaun flew in with a list of homes to look at in Ladera Ranch, Dana Point and Talega. A major factor for them in choosing Talega was the quality of Vista del Mar Middle School. The family moved to California just this past summer and younger

son Cameron, having recently celebrated his eleventh birthday, is in 6th grade at Vista del Mar. Both Shaun and Katherine are world travelers. Shaun has lived and owned businesses in Greece, Australia and various Pacific Rim countries. Katherine has lived all over Europe, having traveled with various musical performance companies and also as a performer in the family business. Their entertainment company disguises leading Broadway and opera singers as waiters and waitresses at high end weddings, large fundraisers, corporate events, and parties. The singers pretend to be wait staff, guests or employees and at a given moment they burst into song, culminating into a unique Broadwaystyle show. They have performed for celebrities including Sir Elton John, Former President George Bush, Sr., and Katherine even played a “planted” guest at Windsor Castle for His Royal Highness Prince Phillip’s birthday party! The Turners have run Singers in Disguise together as a team for 11 years and have performed about 20 times all over the U.S., most recently at the Hotel del Coronado and Union Station in LA. “I do the creative stuff,” says Katherine. “And I do the boring stuff— paperwork, contracts, advertising and sometimes the A/V. Adds
Shaun, “Our sound equipment left before we did and it’s still on a boat somewhere. The sound must be impeccable and it can be quite a shock to our clients when they see the cost of a really good system.” Katherine adds, “There’s no sense singing through rubbish!” One of their most meaningful performances was for the 9/11 Tunnel to Towers run in New York City, a yearly memorial commemorating that fateful day. Shaun explains, “London sends over firefighters each year to join the 20,000 runners. There are marines, army, navy, people from all walks of life. It’s really a moving thing. Every year they have a big dinner of about 1,000 people or so at Windsor Gardens the night before the run. Katherine was asked to sing and I got the idea to dress her in my spare fireman uniform. I wore my captains hat, looking in charge, and Katie went dressed as a firefighter. Katherine adds, “I said that it was great to be here and it is always so well done. Then I said something like, ‘I’m often told that I do a job that is not always associated with a woman, and I’d like to do something now that is also not always associated with a woman.’ Then I sang Nessun Dorma which is, of course, associated with the big fat tenor, Pavarotti. They went absolutely mad!” Even though the family has only lived in Talega a few months, they love it! “The

neighbors have been very welcoming to us. It was a big move coming from England. We are taking a risk, but the people have been lovely to us so far. Everyone seems to be happy. Although I’m sure the sun shining all the time helps!” said Shaun. It has been very busy for them and a big transition for the whole family, including Milly, their 7 year-old rescued French Bulldog who had a tough route getting to the U.S. Since taking their Talega address, the Turners have also adopted another rescue, a Shar-Pei pup named Humphrey who was found wandering the streets of Los Angeles and ended up at a shelter. continued»»
{ Feature story continued }
Tasks necessary for newcomers to complete, like trips to the DMV, are slowing down a bit for the Turners. Even with over 40 years of driving experience, Shaun still has to take a driving test, ironically at the same time 17 year-old Lewis is testing to get his first license! Lewis plays soccer— A LOT of soccer— in fact more than he has played in his life but he’s loving it. He plays for both West Coast FC and San Clemente High School. Cameron plays cricket for the South Orange County Cricket Club and soccer for San Clemente Surf. They are both making friends and adjusting to school, but at the same time missing old friends and family in London. Katherine is the effervescent bubble that could burst into song at any minute, for any reason. Shaun, however, is athletic and loves exercising outdoors and running the many hilly trails throughout Talega six days a week. He is also a certified scuba instructor. The four of them all love being near the beach but they are also planning a ski trip to Mammoth this year.
TL – What do you miss most about your life in London? Shaun: I miss my parents and my work and going to the fire station at night, without a doubt. I’ve sort of become a civilian here, watching the news in the evening. I miss the camaraderie of the station. Katherine: I lost both my parents, my dad most recently. So I was ready to see the back side of London. I do miss my close girlfriends from my childhood and my English performers who were so much fun. Shaun: ROUNDABOUTS! The traffic signals here drive me mad. You have to sit for several minutes at lights and with roundabouts you just keep going. TL – What do you like about living here? Shaun: Obviously, the weather. And for the children, it is better here. The facilities are unbelievable— pools, fantastic baseball and soccer fields. I actually was running the other day and got lost. I was in a canyon and turned a corner to a path I had never been on and there was another baseball field I’d never seen before! Also, people here are very, very friendly. I have to transform myself here to be more friendly because it’s just not like that in London. People here greet you more openly. Katherine: I am looking forward to trick-or-treaters! And I loved Fright Night at Universal Studios in Florida so maybe I can do that here with the boys. TL – What is your family motto and what would you like to share with your neighbors?
Katie and Shaun (running in full fire gear) at the finish line of Tunnel to Towers, NYC, 2014
Shaun: We kind of live for today. Our lives are not boring.

Katherine: To young people I would say, travel! Do not think because you are born in a country that you have to die in that country. See this planet because there are a lot of good things to see. Don’t get to the space in your life where you are saying, ‘I should have done this when I was younger.’ The Turners are still settling in to their lives in Talega but so far, so good. They are really looking forward to pursuing the opening of a local musical theater school and glee club, as well as growing Singers in Disguise. Katherine just finished a run at the Curtis Theater in Brea, playing the part of “Lucy” in the musical, Sweeny Todd. She plans to perform in many more productions in the future. So if you happen to hear a lovely British accent around the Santalana neighborhood, there’s a good chance it may be one of the Turners. Give it a go and say hello to your new neighbors!

ooking for a massage that promises consistent and deep pressure, helping to relieve muscle aches and pains, but at the same time also relaxing to receive? Ashiatsu massage may just be your answer.
As a veteran massage therapist of 12 years, I, too, was on a constant search for the perfect deep tissue massage. After receiving my first Ashiatsu massage almost two years ago, I instantly fell in love with the technique. I loved everything about it, but especially the relief I felt afterwards. I knew then that not only did I have to learn the technique, but perfect it and offer it to everyone who loves receiving massage as much as I do. From that passion, and already equipped with ten years spent working in the luxury resort spa industry, I opened Barefoot Bliss Massage. When I tell people we specialize in Ashiatsu massage their first response is, ‘Ashi what?’ The word “Ashiatsu” literally translated means “foot” (ashi) and “pressure” (atsu) in Japanese. While the original Asian styles of barefoot massage were compressions over clothing with the feet, many versions have developed over the years. Ashiatsu utilizes a western-style massage table, and with the support of overhead bars, the therapist employs long, gliding strokes and compression using the feet. Using soft, padded soles of the feet not only provides a more luxurious

and deeper massage, but is also more soothing and comfortable to receive than traditional deep tissue massage. Gliding pressure of the feet, versus hands, stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, allowing you to dive into a deeper state of relaxation, achieving longer lasting results. Pressure can also easily be controlled by the therapist, allowing clients who prefer lighter pressure to still be able to benefit from Ashiatsu. Visit Barefoot Bliss Massage today and experience Ashiatsu massage, the most luxurious and effective massage you will ever have! FAMILY FOCUS
Family Focus Emotional Literacy BY DR. DUSTINE REY
E
very parent and child enjoys the special moments when connecting over a favorite book. Children often ask for the same title to be read over and over, delighting in each page as if it was the first time hearing the tale. Parenting experts and psychologists agree that this practice is important for family bonding and for learning hidden messages within the tales of childhood literature. Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and owner of The Heart of Connection, Haley Goldberg, suggests that parents should also supplement their well-known children books with books that teach emotional support as well as socialemotional skills. Children need intentional support for social-emotional development, such as friendship skills, empathy, impulse control, problem-solving, and gratitude. Many books offer the support to teach children to cope with a range of challenges such as dealing with conflict, a new sibling or sibling rivalry, or moving, deployment, divorce, and death. Parents report that the books that address these often difficult topics help to alleviate stress, provide vocabulary for children to use, and offer direct solutions for children.
Books that focus on emotional skills are written explicitly about feelings and behaviors. These books help to build emotional vocabulary, and in some cases provide information about behavioral expectations in a non-threatening way. We often only think of teaching common emotions like happy, sad and mad, but there are many other feelings words that children should learn to express, such as disappointed, lonely, confused, angry and impatient.
An easy and fun way to be more intentional about supporting your child’s social-emotional development is to enhance their library with the following books: • The Hundred Dresses • Crow Boy • Rule • Yesterday I had the Blues
• Wonder • Mouse was Mad • I Miss Franklin P. Shuckles • Crazy Hair Day
Understanding emotions is a critical part of healthy child development. It is up to adults to teach children to understand and deal with their emotions in appropriate ways. Integrating books with messages that teach these skills is just as fun and meaningful as reading our favorite and timeless classics. Dr. Rey is an adjunct professor at The Graduate School of Education and Psychology at Pepperdine University and the founder/executive director of The Gratitude Garden Preschool in San Clemente. Q&A
WITH DR. KYLE SONG BY DR. KYLE SONG
Q: At which age should I consider scar revision for my child? A: Generally, it’s best to consider scar revision once your child is either eight years old, or begins to complain about the appearance of their scar. Most kids will tolerate a procedure under local anesthetic to improve a scar at age eight or older, however, scars will continue to stretch and expand as a child grows, and thus, definitive scar treatment is typically done again in the teenage years. The intention of treating a scar early is to minimize impact on a child’s social development. Q: What can be done to improve the appearance of a scar? A: After any injury or scar revision, the most effective management is proactively protecting a scar. The best treatments are silicone application and UV protection. Silicone gel stimulates a scar to flatten, soften, and reduce dark pigmentation. Protecting scars with a good physical barrier, such as sunscreen, will help to prevent scar darkening. Once scars are fully mature, there are multiple options including excision and reclosure, dermabrasion, and laser (the ideal treatment depending on the properties of the scar.) Q: What options are available for nonsurgical body contouring? A: SculpSure is the newest and most cutting-edge technology for non-surgical fat reduction. In comparison to CoolSculpting, a single treatment with SculpSure takes 25 minutes and on average, results in a 25% fat reduction in the area treated. For instance, one treatment in the lower abdomen will begin showing results within four weeks, and full results in 12 weeks. With SculpSure, there is minimal discomfort with each treatment and absolutely no downtime. SculpSure can www.bestversionmedia.com
Protecting scars with a good physical barrier, such as sunscreen, will help to prevent scar darkening. be used on patients with extremely little body fat but with a small pocket of fatty tissue, to patients still working on achieving their ideal body weight. Q: What’s the difference between liposuction and an abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck? A: Liposuction is a technique that is only able to remove excess fatty tissue. A good result is dependent on the patient’s skin having enough elastic fibers to contract enough that it is left smooth. For patients with any excess of skin or stretch of their abdominal wall (rectus diastasis,) only a tummy tuck will leave them with the flat, taut tummy similar to their pre-pregnancy state. Q: I think I need a tummy tuck, but I’m not quite ready. Is there another option for me? A: SculpSure is revolutionizing the nonsurgical treatment options available. This is often the only option available because of its short treatment time, and zero downtime required. Even patients who may have a considerably better result with a tummy tuck but aren’t quite ready, will still see positive improvements with SculpSure. And at Song Plastic Surgery, any fees paid toward SculpSure will be fully credited toward a future tummy tuck. In addition, anyone who mentions this article will receive a $300 discount off any SculpSure treatment at our practice.
