New Year... New You Steve’s Butternut Squash & Red Pepper Soup Here’s a Winter-warming healthy soup from our own Hospice catering team. It’s only 82 calories per portion and full of nutritional benefits including antioxidants and is a good source of potassium, fibre and manganese.

Ingredients • 1 onion • 1 butternut squash • 1 red pepper • thyme & parsley sprigs tied together • 1 bay leaf • 1 ltr vegetable stock • salt and pepper • dash of lemon juice

Add the diced butternut squash, onion and pepper to the pan and pour over the stock. Add the herbs, bring to boil and then lower the heat and simmer for 25 minutes. Remove the herbs and blend using a hand blender until smooth. Add seasoning to taste – if it tastes sweet just add a dash of lemon juice. «Chef’s tip - As butternut squash is quite thick already, you don’t need to add any cream – this will keep it fat free and healthy. If you like a kick, add a chopped red chilli.

2015

We asked our lovely supporters why they play our weekly Lottery? Is it because every week one lucky lottery player is guaranteed to win £2,000? Or is it because it is a unique way of supporting your local Hospice? Every year, the Dougie Mac Lottery provides the Hospice with over £3/4million in revenue – such vital income that helps patients and their families at a time when they need us most.

Rollover winner Maurice Henshall Maurice from Fenton scooped a whopping £7,500 in our rollover prize in August 2014 Maurice Henshall, the lucky winner joined the weekly lottery just five weeks prior to his big win! Christine was spinning with joy after winning our £1,000 rollover prize back in April 2014. Winning came at the right time as the family’s washing machine broke just a week before her win; they used the prize money to pay for a new one. “Dougie Mac is a fantastic local charity and we are happy to be a part of their Lottery. We never expected to win...so we’re feeling extremely grateful”

“I was so shocked to hear I had won – you never expect that phone call. I’ve always wanted to go to New York so I am planning to go next year with the winnings”. He also donated part of his winnings back to the Hospice – thank you Maurice. Kelly received the phone call to say that she had won whilst on holiday in Tenby. She told us she was going to put the winnings towards treating her family. “I joined the Dougie Mac Lottery online as it is a great way of supporting the Hospice. I know that my pound goes to a good local cause” Sheila from Stone has supported the Dougie Mac for years. Following the shock news of her win, she kindly donated part of her winnings to the Hospice. “I plan to put the remaining prize money towards a great Christmas with my family”.

Glennis’ story Bringing care

closer to home

When Glennis Bates is out and about in her hometown Ball Green she is constantly stopped on the streets by people who know her from the Doctor’s Practice she worked at for 19 years. The 67 year old began working there in 1988 as a receptionist and by the time she retired in 2007 she was Practice Manager. “I enjoyed the work so very much. It was very interesting and I do miss meeting the people” Glennis said. During her final twelve months of working at the Practice, Glennis’ health deteriorated and she had to be admitted to hospital three times. Glennis was diagnosed Chronic with Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). This disease causes the airways to become inflamed and narrow, which in turn makes breathing much harder. “I was really very poorly and my medication was not controlled,” she added.

After numerous visits to her Doctor and Consultant, Glennis had to face the devastating news that her illness was incurable. She was therefore referred by her GP to the Douglas Macmillan Hospice in 2009. Whilst the Hospice is perhaps best known for caring for people with cancer, it also cares for people affected by a number of other life limiting illnesses, including COPD. Now Glennis is visited in her home by one of the Hospice’s Community

Nurses, Melanie, who not only provides her patient with care and support, but also monitors her progress and provides symptom management. Last year, Melanie also organised for Glennis to start visiting our Day Therapy Unit once a week where she undertakes various physiotherapy activities to assist with her breathing. “I really enjoy coming to the Day Therapy Unit; it also gives my husband Alan some time to himself and he knows I’m in a safe place and in safe hands,” Glennis said. Alan also spoke of his gratitude to the Hospice for the care his wife is receiving. “I can’t fault the Hospice

and the care Glennis has been given. Plus it’s a bit of peace and quiet for me,” he joked. Alan has been part of the Dougie Mac Lottery since 2008 after signing up with one of our Lottery Promoters. Glennis was really surprised to hear how the money raised from the Dougie Mac Lottery helps support all of the services that the Hospice provides, both on-site and out in the community. “We never realised much the Dougie Lottery raises and how support really does local people” she said.

“At first I was very wary as I didn’t know what to expect. People think that if you go into the Hospice that you won’t come out again. I found out that like myself, 50% of patients who visit actually do go home after receiving respite or symptom control.” “I wouldn’t be wary of going in again if I had to; they couldn’t do enough for me.”

Glennis and her husband are very grateful to every one of our Lottery players and had this special message for you all, “Thank you to everybody who plays the Dougie Mac Lottery. Your generosity really does help local people like me,” Glennis concluded.

how Mac their help

In March last year Glennis also spent time in the In Patient Unit at the Hospice for symptom control. After initially fearing coming to our Blurton base, she was bowled over by the difference it has made. She admitted,

Building for the Future In October 2014, the Hospice opened its new look Day Therapy Unit. This brand new facility enables the Hospice to reach out to more people in the community by providing services including lymphodaema care, complimentary therapies and art therapy sessions. The building also houses our bereavement and psychological therapy services.

John and Michelle’s Wedding surprise When John and Michelle Pickthorne got married last May, they never expected to receive a grand surprise from their Wedding Favours. The lucky couple from Longton chose to support the Hospice on their Special Day by using our Dougie Mac scratch cards as gifts for their guests at their Wedding reception. However, the

newlyweds only discovered that they had actually won £1,000 themselves after their honeymoon! “We went on holiday to Trecco Bay in Wales following the wedding and when we returned home we found a couple of spare scratch cards in the garage,” John said. “Michelle scratched them off and discovered that we had won the top prize of £1,000 on one of them and £1 on the other card.” For John, choosing the Dougie Mac scratch cards as Wedding Favours was an obvious choice after his mum had previously received care from the Hospice, as well as wife Michelle’s grandfather who had used the Hospice at Home service. “The care they both received
