My dad’s a tenor sings a lot of songs by a very old Armenian composer named Gomidas. I used to go to sleep to Gomidas when I was a little girl. One day when I was about six, he bought me a piano. I walked in and there was. When I was fourteen I stopped playing for about eight months. That summer I went to the Soviet Union and saw fourteen-year-olds playing very difficult Chopin etudes in concerts. I realized unless I started up again I’d waste away to nothing. Bach flowed, counterpoint style is supposed to be supposed supposed to be played as if on a harpsichord, two hands two keyboards. Then I drop it awhile—maybe a month or two—work on another piece, then go back to the first piece. I’ll open the book and say, “My God, this music has matured!”
