Ronnie McGinn’s
Poetry Corner Phyllis Coughlan writes from her heart with a feeling of sincerity that is the envy of us all. She has been writing poetry for a number of years but is a little shy about promoting her talent. She certainly has no need to be, her poetry speaks for itself and we hope to hear a lot more from her in the future.
Memories Enjoy your children while they are young, Don’t put it off until they are big and strong, Time is precious and moves so fast, And there is no little one to sit on your lap. Those little eyes that looked up at you, Believing every word to be true. Play with them while they are small, For this is what they remember after all For childhood’s day slips away and your little flock are gone. O! but what memories you can retain for The joy and truth of children remain.

You struggle and bear all the heartaches for them, and wish in your heart you could bear it for them, But, alas it’s not so, as they’re got to grow Through the hardship and struggle of life, For this is why enjoy your child While their worries are still far away, And remember the joy and smiles When you gave your time to play. O! There was a day when you looked around, And your house seemed to be upside down, With toys here, there and everywhere, But sad is the day when things are stored away Toys nowhere to be seen, The house that seemed too small, Is now big after all, And no little ones to be seen. 10 years of changes
P
rime Letting & Management are operating a property service in our busy suburb for almost ten years now (opened April 2005) and boy have we seen some changes over the years! Gone are the days of the large shop window, looking for footfall to browse our displays! Like so many businesses now we are dependent on online traffic. Thankfully daft.ie and myhome. ie have cornered the market, making advertising equally accessible to all size businesses and individual landlords alike. It may cost – but less than the prominent South Mall window display! This trend allows us to work from our office in the prominent Watergold building in the centre of Douglas Village & jump into our cars, onto the link road and be at any suburb within 20 minutes. Time has always been of the essence in this business, as idle property simply equals lost rental revenues. Rents are increasing again due to a lack of supply and landlords need to make hay while the sun shines. Of course, on the other side of the coin, the increased rents and low supply is putting huge financial pressure on tenants, especially those wishing to buy a home, thus, saving their 10-20% deposit! It is a vicious circle for them, which will no doubt, push back their purchase time & therefore, put even more pressure on the current low rental stock. In Douglas, circa 2005, the average rent for a 3 bedroom semi-detached house was €900, with the city centre being
THURSDAY 05/02/15
the more expensive, eg €950 for a 2 bedroom apartment. The rents peeked in 2008 and began a slow decline from 2009. We are now back at similar rents to that of 2007-2008. However, we are finding the suburbs are in charge, non-more so than the greater Douglas area. Suburban areas are in high demand, low in stock & demanding high rents. We have a new style of tenant – namely, Irish growing families. An example of same who be - couples who bought a 2-3 bedroom home in 20062008 & have since started a family. House prices rule out the sale of their first home/ trade-up, and so they will be become both a landlord and a tenant in one move. The great thing about this move is that it is beneficial for all parties involved. It frees up a smaller property, which is not currently being built around the city and creates an ideal tenant for the any landlord. Now this family will need a 20% deposit for a tradeup purchase, so again I feel their rental will be more long-term than originally thought. As I say, we have seen many changes over the past ten years, and are delighted we have successfully remained in business throughout the highs & lows. We are now looking forward to seeing positive growth in the sector. We put our success down to providing a personal service. Mary Hennessy, John Lyons and I (Pauline O’Sullivan) are firm believers that communication is key to success. If you have a property to rent, or would like us to manage your residential lettings we will gladly furnish you with more information on our services.

One of the major fund-raising events of the year for Douglas Community Assoc. is the annual calendar, to which many businesses throughout the Douglas area – and some beyond – subscribe through advertisements. The revenue from this goes to support various services such as Meals and Wheels, Pre-School Playgroup, the Development of the Park, etc. 4,000 copies of the calendar were recently distributed around the Douglas area. Thanks to the very generous businesses in Douglas who support this initiative.

Tidy Towns
Our volunteers are back after a short break for Christmas. Last Saturday some of our volunteers went to the Ballybrack Woods and gathered large items that had been there for years (bicycles, trolleys etc.). Cork County Council then removed these. Volunteers meet every Saturday morning at the park at 10.30 and work ‘til noon. Picks and high viz jackets supplied. All are welcome!

A stream runs from south to north through the park, and the beautiful spire of the Church of Ireland church, one of Douglas’ most distinctive landmarks, is just over the stone-wall boundary between park and church.
State of the Art Playground
The original playground, installed about 10 years ago by a very active group within the Association, was replaced by a state-of-the art playground by Cork Co. Council’s Recreation and Parks Dept. in 2009. The equipment is fantastic and there’s great variety, suiting younger and older children up to the age of 13 Above: Kellie Aherne Graduating with a fetac leval 5 in Childcare pictured with her mother years.

YOUNG AT HEART
Kevin Gregan
With Phil Goodman
I
t may still be like winter but we are already planning our summer outings and events. We have a trip to the Dail on Feb 18th. Also, trips to Kenmare Bay Hotel for 3 nights and Hodson Bay Hotel in Athlone for 4 nights, day trips to Sherkin Naval Base, Ballycotton Lighthouse, Roscrea Abbey, Killarney etc. Let’s hope we will get the lovely weather we had the past two years. We know that we are living longer. 2 out of every 100 children born in Ireland today will live to be 120 years old and a third of children will live to be over 100. It is now more important than ever that we stay as healthy as possible. Imagine retiring at 65 and living for another 40 years past retirement. This is now the reality many countries and populations are facing. Big challenges are looming for policy makers all over the world as to how they will cope with an increasingly ageing population and a population that is living far longer than the original systems were designed to cope with. Can our Health Service cope with a nation living longer? A nation that will need access to more services for a longer period of time? Does the retirement pension allow people to live comfortably for up to 45 years post retirement? What barriers exist in our society that restricts people in their 60s from starting up new businesses, continuing to work or re-train for new careers? Smart aging is a concept that uses technology to promote, maintain and improve the quality of our life from age 50 +. As a nation do we have the correct policies under development for our future to support us and our families as we age? In today’s Ireland we expect to see up to 3 generations of a family alive at the same time, but consider a future where there are up to 5 generations of a family living at the same time. Solutions to problems we yet don’t face are already under development. Technology, skills and a range of supports are the necessary building blocks in a smart aging society. Change is afoot! Aging will no longer be seen as ‘retirement’. It is a time for re-generation and re-invention. When people pass a certain age they see themselves as winding down and this is what we need to change. We need to change how people think about themselves when they reach a certain age. It is just a number. The day you turn 65, you are not a year older, you are one day older – so don’t stop just because the number changes. Exercise daily, learn a new skill. Participate in your community, eat well and embrace the future.
The Douglas heat of the over 60s takes place in St. Columbas Hall on February 24th. The winner will take home the Luke Philpott Perpetual Trophy and go forward to the semi – final in the City Hall to represent Douglas. Come along to the hall on the 24th for a night of song and dance. Prizes are sponsored by Douglas Credit Union. This year’s prizes are beautiful handmade wooden lamps and bowls specially made by a member of Young at Heart. It is great to recognise and support local talent. Get your dancing shoes out for the 8th Annual Dancing Competition on March 24th in St. Columbas Hall. Fabulous prizes go to the winning couples. These include the Douglas Village Perpetual Trophy and gold and silver medals. There are two categories, ladies and gents and two ladies. All are welcome to take part in the 8th Annual Inter-Community Quiz on March 25th at 11am in the Community School Library. Young at Heart and students from Douglas School pit their knowledge to win the Credit Union Perpetual Trophy. On each team there are two students and two seniors. This is always great fun but very competitive! This is a free event. Anyone who would like to take part, contact me on 021 4363867. Come along to Douglas GAA Hall on March 9th at 10.30 am for a talk by The Cancer Society. There will be information on Cancer prevention and how to reduce you risk of Cancer. There will also be information on what services are available.

Douglas Pushes the Floats Out for St Patrick’s Day Frank K Hanover
Douglas is getting set to transform itself communally this coming St Patrick’s Day. Leaving from St Columbas School at 2pm where there is an enlarged Family Day in the Park that’ll feature a carousel, and a DJ playing the favourite sounds of Douglas, face painters and stalls selling cakes as well as other likeable diversions, the entire sporting and club orientation of Cork’s busiest satellite town will move up from the park, past the Bow Wow Bridge along Douglas Lawn, alongside St Columbas Hall and Gartan Park before proceeding via Church St from in between Barry’s and O’Driscoll’s and then turning left at John O’Sullivan’s bar opposite the South County bar and wending its way along Douglas West back to the top entrance of the Community Park. Marie Piper-Gregan of the Douglas Post magazine is an event co-ordinator. She tells me, “This event will be bigger than any previous year. At 4pm a monster Duck Race will be held in the park and you can buy one duck for €2.00, or three for €5.00. Everything that’s been organised is set to provide Douglas with a memorable event that’ll endure in the mind long after St Patrick’s Day has ended. Please do come to the Park any time from midday onward to partake of St Patrick’s Day cheer and culture, Douglas style. Douglas Community Association Park Events is to be congratulated on its endeavour. Harry O’Halloran, Billy Coleman and Mary O’Leary have been as pivotal as Marie Piper-Gregan to the organization of this event.

The Rapunzel Foundation The Rapunzel Foundation is a charitable organization that works to improve the lives of those living with hair loss (alopecia) through fund raising as well as through hair raising. Hair is raised through the Rapunzel Foundation’s Ponytail campaign, where people commit to growing their hair 14 inches or longer with the view to their hair being sent to help make much needed wigs to improve the lives of those living with the hair loss. We at Artisan Donnybrook, are a registered Rapunzel Salon, meaning we will send off your donated ponytail , ensuring it reaches the Foundation in perfect condition, and giving a complementary re-style once the ponytail has been cut! To find out more info, you can check out their website on www.rapunzelfoundation.com, call us on 0214897221 or pop in to us in Donnybrook!

Good Neighbour is Cork Person of Month Good neighbour Angela Marshall, when checking out her two elderly neighbours, found them unconscious from suspected carbon monoxide poisoning. Angela, from Blarney Street, Cork City, raised the alarm and her prompt actions certainly saved two lives. “Angela Marshall’s community spirit is typical Blarney Street behaviour because we all look out for each other”, said Tom Coleman, Chairman of Blarney Street, Community Association. Angela used to call in or telephone the two elderly sisters on a daily basis, including Saturdays, when she brings them groceries. She says that one positive that has come out of the experience is that neighbours are now buying carbon monoxide alarms. “People are proud - they won’t ask for help. I think it’s up to neighbours to take the first step and call in and check on them. It doesn’t take that much effort”, added Ms. Marshall. Cork Person of the Month award organiser Manus O’Callaghan said, “Angela received the January Cork Person of the Month award because she saved two lives and reminded us all of how important it is to play our part in making our neighbourhoods safe, welcoming and supportive places for everyone who lives around us.”

Carrigaline and Kent Station to benefit from sustainable transport projects
Fine Gael Cork South Central TD, Jerry Buttimer, has said that improvements to Kent Station and the completion of Carriagline Green route will improve public transport options in Cork. Deputy Buttimer was commenting Tel: 021 484 0652 following an announcement by the Minister for Transport, Email: jerry.buttimer@oireachtas.ie Tourism and Sport, Paschal Donohoe of the allocation Web: jerrybuttimer.ie by the National Transport Authority of €17.5 million for sustainable transport projects in Cork, Galway Limerick and Waterford. “This funding will help to make Kent Station more easily accessible from Cork City and it will improve bus services in Carrigaline. As the recovery takes hold, more people are going back to work and we must give them options to use public transport to and from work. By making it easier for people to use public transport we are helping to improve people’s quality of life and helping to ease the traffic issues in our city. “Total funding of €17.5 million is being allocated, comprising €15.35 million for sustainable projects in the cities of Cork, Galway, Limerick and Waterford and €2.15 million for accessibility projects, including improvements to bus and rail systems for those with hearing or visual impairments and wheelchair users. “The completion of Carrigaline Green Route will make bus travel around Carrigaline more efficient. Hopefully this will help to reduce some of the delays which people around Carrigaline have been experiencing using buses when travelling to work. “Kent Station will also benefit from this investment. A new entrance to the Station will be built and this will provide greater connectivity with the city centre. Improved cycle links with the city centre are also planned as part of this work programme. These changes will help to make it easier for people to access Cork’s train station. Both of these projects will help to improve the transport options available in Cork.”

Alzheimer’s Disease: Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia — the loss of intellectual and social abilities severe enough to interfere with daily functioning. In Alzheimer’s disease, healthy brain tissue degenerates, causing a steady decline in memory and mental abilities. Today, 44,000 people and 50,000 carers in Ireland are impacted by Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia. Although there’s no cure, treatments may improve the quality of life for people with Alzheimer’s disease. Those with Alzheimer’s — as well as those who care for them — need support and affection from friends and family to cope. Alzheimer’s disease may start with slight memory loss and confusion, but it eventually leads to irreversible mental impairment that destroys a person’s ability to remember, reason, learn and imagine. No one factor appears to cause Alzheimer’s disease. Instead, scientists believe that it may take a combination of genetic, lifestyle and environmental factors to trigger the onset of symptoms. While the causes of Alzheimer’s are poorly understood, its effect on brain tissue is clear. Alzheimer’s disease damages and kills brain cells. Currently, there’s no cure for Alzheimer’s disease. Doctors sometimes prescribe drugs to improve signs and symptoms that often accompany Alzheimer’s, including sleeplessness, wandering, anxiety, agitation and depression. But only two varieties of medications have been proved to slow the cognitive decline associated with Alzheimer’s. Cholinesterase inhibitors This group of medications — which includes donepezil (Aricept), rivastigmine (Exelon) and galantamine (Reminyl). Memantine (Ebixa) The first drug approved to treat moderate to severe stages of Alzheimer’s, memantine protects brain cells from damage caused by the chemical messenger glutamate. A healthy lifestyle may help prevent or postpone the development of Alzheimer’s disease. Because Alzheimer’s is most common in people over the age of 80, delaying the onset of the disease would increase the probability that people will die of other causes before Alzheimer’s has a chance to develop. Exercise your body-Higher levels of physical activity have been associated with a lower incidence of Alzheimer’s disease. Exercise your brain, tooMaintaining mental fitness may delay onset of dementia. Some researchers believe that lifelong mental exercise and learning may promote the growth of additional synapses, the connections between neurons, and delay the onset of dementia. If you are worried about Alzheimer’s disease contact your G.P. If you would like more information on Alzheimer’s disease, exercise programmes and general preventative strategies, contact Garvan at Lynch’s Pharmacy on 4366923.
