Cystic Fibrosis Ireland. Dear Editor, It’s possible that many of your readers started the New Year with the goal to exercise more and to get in shape. Now a couple of months into 2015, but with the weather showing no signs of spring, it’s understandable that early enthusiasm may have begun to fade. I’d like to encourage readers of the Douglas Post in County Cork who are looking for a new challenge, or an incentive to keep up their healthy lifestyle, to consider taking part in Cystic Fibrosis Ireland’s (CFI) One in 1,000 campaign. The fundraiser sees 1,000 women come together for CFI as part of the VHI Women’s Mini-Marathon taking place in Dublin on Monday June 1. The 10-kilometre course is open to all levels of fitness, with participants running, jogging and walking, as best suits them. Cystic fibrosis (CF) affects 1,200 children and adults in Ireland. We have some of the most severe types of CF and the highest incidence in the world per head of population. CFI is a patient organisation dedicated to one single goal— supporting people with CF and their families. We do this by providing information, advice and advocacy, offering grant assistance, undertaking research, and funding dedicated CF health facilities. By signing up for CFI, not only will participants be helping to keep themselves fit and healthy, but they will also be supporting our vital services for people with CF. The VHI Women’s Mini Marathon is a fantastic fundraiser and a great day out—for more information, please get in touch on 01 496 2433, email fundraising@cfireland.ie or visit www.cfireland.ie The first step is the hardest, but with a team of 1,000 we’ll ensure your readers cross the finish line in very good company!

It runs from March 23rd to the 29th. Young at Heart have two events in the festival, Dancing Competition on Tuesday 24th March at 8.30 in St. Columba’s Hall. Now in its 8th year, the competition celebrates the energy and dancing talent of our seniors and memories of waltzing days past. Couples may dance together but also two can take to the floor to show their dancing skills. These pairings will be judged in two separate categories, with both sets of winners getting the Douglas Village Perpetual Trophies. Trophies and medals will also be awarded to runners up from 2nd to 6th place. Ernest Perryman will be one of the judges on the night. This is a FREE event and open to everyone who would like to take part. After dancing the night away, there is no rest, as the next morning 25th March; we have the 8th annual Community Quiz with the students from Douglas Community School. On each team two students and two seniors pit their skills and knowledge, all competing for the Douglas Credit Union Perpetual Trophy and many other prizes. It takes place in the Community School at 11.00 am. It is a free event and all are welcome to take part. Contact me on 021 4363867 for more information on all of the above. Well done to Der McCarthy who won the Douglas over 60’s and was presented with the Luke Philpott Perpetual Trophy. Twelve contestants took part. Each one put in a fantastic performance and all were winners as it takes courage to get up and sing in front of a crowd. Der now goes forward to the semi-final representing Douglas in the City Hall on Sunday April 26th. We would sincerely like to thank Douglas Credit Union for sponsoring the prizes and playing a big part in our Community Events. We have two new events every Monday. To enable you stay fit and healthy, there is a Young at Heart class in Dennehy’s Gym in Douglas Village Shopping Centre from 11 – 12. Booking is essential as 20 per class is our maximum. A personal trainer Steve will assess you and go through the different exercises. If you prefer a more relaxed activity, we have an art drawing painting class every Monday afternoon from 2-4 in Douglas GAA Hall. We are delighted Valerie Walsh-Jolly is taking the class. ST. MARY’S CHURCH, POPE’S QUAY, CORK RESTORATION PROJECT

T

he Dominican Foundation of St. Mary’s, which celebrates its 175th Anniversary this year serving the people of Cork, is in dire need of restorative repair and reconstruction. The work indicated involves both the Church and Priory buildings. Both buildings are badly affected by the ingress of water by way of leaks in the roofs, walls and windows. The situation is worsened by damp seepage through the walls of buildings that are themselves one hundred and seventy-five years old. These walls urgently need much restorative work and dry-coursing to make them fit for purpose. The situation, at the request of the Prior, is being assessed at the moment by engineers and architects so that an accurate estimate of what is required can be made. The current estimate is that much work is required both immediately and urgently to put matters to right. Outline estimates indicate that the work will be costly and will probably reach four to five hundred thousand Euro. With this proposition in mind a small group have come together to help the Prior generate finance to pay for this essential work. The group is not exclusive and is open to anyone who wishes to help. Such a person(s) need to indicate their wish to help the Prior, Fr. Gerard Dunne, O.P. Recently we launched our efforts at a Civic Reception kindly arranged by Cllr. Mary Shields, Cork’s Lord Mayor. We thank the Lord Mayor for her great support and kindness in hosting this Civic Reception to present this project to the people of Cork all in aid of one of Cork’s most historical and iconic churches. To kick start this project the Friends of St. Mary’s wish to announce details of a GALA FUNDRAISING CONCERT at Cork Opera House on Wednesday, 18th March at 8.00pm featuring the cream of Cork talent who are generously giving their time and talent in support. Topping the bill is internationally renowned soprano MAJELLA CULLAGH. Also featured: The Band of the 1st Brigade, Collins Barracks, Cork, under the baton of Capt. Brian Prendergast; St. Mary’s 50-member strong choir lead by Conductor Sean Lehane; The Cork School of Dance, Principal: Sinead Murphy; Comedians Noel Barrett & Pat Sullivan (Swans Fame); Terry McCarthy & Donal Ring Jnr.; The Montfort College of Performing Arts, Director, Trevor Ryan. Caroline Fraher, “Voice of an Angel” and The Molgoggers, Cobh’s Sea Shanty and Maritime Group. Produced & Directed by Charlotte O’Byrne & Noel Magnier. MC: Dr. Kevin Goggin.

Suzanne Booth Member of NRRI Recognised by BCMA & NHII Frozen shoulder Frozen shoulder occurs when there is thickening, swelling and tightening of the flexible tissue that surrounds your shoulder joint. This leaves less space for your upper arm bone (humerus) in the shoulder joint and makes any movement stiff and painful. You may find it difficult to carry out everyday tasks, such as dressing, driving and sleeping comfortably. Some people are unable to move their shoulder at all. . The symptoms of frozen shoulder can vary greatly from person to person, but they tend to advance slowly. The symptoms are usually felt in two stages which are spread over a number of months or years. http://o.quizlet.com/U.cq26CSfuqzOICScJ3pUA_m.jpg

Stage 1

During stage 1 of frozen shoulder, your shoulder will start to ache and feel stiff before becoming very painful. The pain is often worse at night and when you lie on the affected side. Stage 1 usually lasts two to nine months.

Stage 2

Stage 2 of frozen shoulder is known as the adhesive stage. Your shoulder will become increasingly stiff but the pain does not usually get worse. Your shoulder muscles may start to waste slightly because they are not being used. Stage two lasts four to 12 months. Most cases of frozen shoulder occur in people who are over 40 years old. The condition is more common in women than in men. If you suffer from Frozen Shoulder you are likely to experience severe pain and sleep deprivation for prolonged periods and this can lead to depression and further problems relating to the back and neck. Deep Tissue Massage can help in the treatment of Frozen Shoulder by loosening and stretching the muscles around the joint. It will also break down any scar tissue in the area which may be contributing to your pain. Deep Tissue Massage will also accelerate the return of motion to the shoulder joint. It is important to work both the front and back of the Shoulder Joint and this coupled with home exercises should see your pain diminish and range of movement improve. Kiely-Walsh Academy Celebrates 30 Years of Success Frank K Hanover

E

stablished in 1984 the Kiely Walsh Academy of Irish Dancing is currently celebrating 30 years of global and home grown success in training hundreds of dancers to celebrate their cultural inheritance. Over the past three decades under the expert tutleage of Miah Walsh and Maria Kiely-Walsh the Academy has provided classes in competitive, non-competitive, performance and social Irish dancing in addition to producing an impressive array of competition winners in global, national and Munster titles. The Academy has also travelled the four corners of the world representing Ireland at festivals on the international stage. To celebrate their thirtieth anniversary the Academy will, on March 8th at the Cork Opera House with performances at 2pm and 7pm for which tickets are now available from the Opera House box office, stage the spectacular ‘The Reel Rhythm’, a show featuring modern, traditional, figure and ceili dances performed by junior dancers from the Academy alongside world stage dancers from the Academy. Additionally the famed Academy band and dancers Rince Cois Laoi, who’ve performed at the world’s largest Celtic Festival at Lorient in France for the past four years, will add another excellent aspect to the show in early March. With ‘Riverdance’ set to return to Cork later this year there’s a pleasure to be taken by the Academy in the return of past pupil John Lonergan, six time World Champion, and also in the fact that John is now himself an Academy teacher of Irish Dance a fact which enthuses both Maria and Miah; “We’re just delighted that John has joined us at the Academy. Also, we’d like to thank everybody we’ve worked with over the years who’ve supported our development and promotion of Irish Dancing.” Adds Maria, “We’d love to see our past pupils, their parents and as much of our audience from over the years at the Opera House on March 8th to help celebrate with us our fantastic and amazing Irish culture. Tickets for ‘The Reel Rhythm’ at the Opera House can be ordered by telephone at (021) 427 0022. The ‘Kiely-Walsh Academy of Irish Dance’ can be found on social media at Facebook. Without question, the show at the Opera House promises to be a breathtaking exhibition of Irish Dance at its very best. Don’t miss it.

Award Ceremonies, Discover Cork: Schools’ Heritage Project 2015 The Discover Cork: Schools’ Heritage Project 2015 will come to its conclusion over two evenings in March. The award ceremony for County Cork schools takes place on Friday 13 March and the ceremony for the City on Friday 20 March (6.30pm start both evenings, Silversprings Convention Centre). Founded by Cllr Kieran McCarthy, the year 2015 marks the twelfth year of the award ceremonies for best local history projects submitted into the project. The Project is open to schools in Cork; at primary level to the pupils of fourth, fifth and sixth class and at post-primary from first to sixth years. A total of 25 schools in Cork City and 22 in Cork County took part in the 2015 Project. Approx 180 projects were submitted on all aspects of Cork’s history with 1300 students participating between individuals, group and class entries. The project in the city is kindly funded by Cork Civic Trust, Cork City Council and the Heritage Council. In the 2015 season prizes will also be provided by Sean Kelly of Lucky Meadows Equestrian Centre Watergrasshill, and the Lifetime Lab. The project in the County is funded by students and Cllr Kieran McCarthy. Commenting, co-ordinator of the project, Cllr Kieran McCarthy noted: “One of the key aims of the project is to allow students to explore, investigate and debate their local heritage in a constructive, active and fun way. The Project attempts to provide the student with a hands-on and interactive activity that is all about learning not only about your local area but also about the process of learning by participating students. The Schools’ Heritage Project also focuses on motivating and inspiring young people”. Geriatric / Senior Cat Care

Cats are living longer and healthier lives, thanks to improved veterinary care and better nutrition. An older cat is usually preceded by the term “senior” or “geriatric.” Cats are considered senior between the ages of 11 and 14, and geriatric over the age of 15.

The following tips will help keep your senior cat happy and healthy well into her golden years. 1. Provide regular veterinary care. Regular veterinary care is important at any age, but becomes especially important once your cat becomes a senior. Most vets recommend annual visits for cats up to 6 or 7 years of age, and biannual visits for older cats. Depending on their health status, senior cats may need even more frequent visits. 2. Watch for behavior changes. Any deviation from your cat’s regular routine, no matter how subtle, can be an indicator of a health problem. Changes such as increased vocalization, problems with elimination, different sleeping patterns, or increased thirst or urination can all be indicators of medical problems and may require veterinary attention. 3. Modify your senior cat’s environment. As cats age, they will loose mobility and show beginning or advanced signs of arthritis. If your cat can no longer jump up on beds or other favorite sleeping spots, consider getting a ramp or steps to make it easier for her. Make sure that your cat has easy access to the litter box. Some litter boxes may be too high for older cats to get in and out of comfortably. 4. Watch for signs of arthritis. Arthritis is a common, but under-recognized condition in senior cats. The signs are often subtle, since cats are masters at disguising pain Cats with arthritis might avoid the activities they used to enjoy, some

may become depressed or change their eating habits. Arthritis can be managed with pain medication, supplements, massage, and other alternative therapies, as well as by modifying your cat’s environment. 5. Feed an appropriate diet. As cats age, they’re typically less playful and less mobile, and weight gain can become a problem. Adjust the type and quantity of food as needed to keep your cat healthy through her senior and geriatric years. Your vet will be happy to advise a suitable diet. 6. Help your cat maintain a healthy weight. Due to their reduced levels of activity, senior cats may gain weight. Obesity can lead to numerous health problems, including diabetes. Increased weight will also aggravate arthritis. On the flip side, some cats, especially once they reach the geriatric years, may start to lose weight and will need to have their food intake monitored closely. 7. Maintain good oral health. Your senior cat’s bi-annual vet exams should include a thorough examination of your cat’s teeth and mouth. Good dental health is one of the most important health issues for cats, especially as they get older. Dental disease not only causes pain and decreases quality of life, but it can result in damage to other organs such as kidneys and heart. The best prevention of dental problems is regular brushing. Your cat may need periodic professional cleanings under anesthesia to maintain good oral health. 8. Vaccinations Work in partnership with your vet to evaluate risk, and determine whether there is a need for continued vaccinations. Consider blood tests in lieu of vaccinations to determine protection levels. Life with an older cat is a rewarding and enriching experience. Following these guidelines should help you keep your feline companion happy and healthy well into her golden years.

CIARAN LYNCH Move to End Rent Supplement Discrimination

T

he days of landlords discriminating against prospective tenants because they are on rent supplement are numbered following the announcement by Minister of State Aodhan O’Riordain that the Government has decided to prohibit discrimination in relation to a tenant or prospective tenant on the basis that the person is or is not in receipt of a Housing Assistance Payment or Rent Supplement. Deputy Lynch stated that he wanted to congratulate Minister O’Riordain on securing Government approval for this move which had a harmful impact on persons seeking to rent accommodation. The notion that they are somehow seen as a substandard category of tenant is ludicrous. Ciarán Lynch TD This is a serious issue which is raised at my clinics weekly stated Deputy Lynch. 60% of the jobs created last year were outside of Dublin

T

he South West region, which includes Cork and Kerry, is experiencing employment growth according to the latest CSO figures”, says Fine Gael TD for Cork South Central, Jerry Buttimer. The figures show that in Quarter 4 of last year, 275,600 people were in employment in the South West region, representing a 3.4% increase since the launch of the Action Plan Tel: 021 484 0652 for Jobs by the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Email: jerry.buttimer@oireachtas.ie Web: jerrybuttimer.ie Richard Bruton in February 2012. “Almost 90,000 new jobs have been created across the country since the launch of the Action Plan for Jobs, and employment has grown in all 8 regions. 60% of the 30,000 jobs created last year were outside of Dublin, which dispels the myth that this is a Dublin only recovery. “Having said that, we know that the recovery is not yet being felt in every single part of the country. In order to spread the recovery further, the Government’s Action Plan for Jobs will focus on regional job creation this year. Irish entrepreneurs and established businesses are integral to this so it is encouraging to see the CSO report showing that 75% of jobs in 2014 were created by indigenous Irish companies. “The economic recovery is getting stronger and it is good to see job creation growing in all regions of the country. Today’s figures show that the plan is working and that we are well on the way to surpassing our target of 100,000 jobs by 2016. The Government is now focussed on achieving 40,000 jobs in 2015 alone and reaching full employment by 2018. We want every person around the country to feel the benefit of the continuing economic recovery. “Thanks to the sacrifices and efforts of the Irish people, Ireland is moving to a new phase of growth and prosperity. It is the aim of this Government to ensure that the growth is sustainable this time around. We will not go back to boom and bust economics, and rampant unemployment. Political stability is now crucial for economic security and this Government has a well thought out sustainable plan to keep us on the right track.” CLINIC DETAILS: Monday: 5pm Togher Community Centre, Togher Road 6pm Ballyphehane Community Centre, Tory Top Road Friday: 12:30pm Mahon Community Centre, Avenue de Rennes, Mahon. Ber Gives Cancer a Close Shave Frank K Hanover

B

er Power has engaged with Today FM ‘s ‘Shave # Dye # Oh My’ charity drive in the most profound way by having her head shaved on February 20th at Rembrandts on the Boreenamanna Road in support of the Irish Cancer Society whose work is fundamental to the nursing of the sufferers of cancer in the republic. The Blackrock woman spoke to the Douglas Post to highlight how effective the work of the society is for people who seek to be at home where many people feel the need to be while dealing with the final stages of the alarmingly widespread disease. Ber tells me, “It’s a fact that very few people will avoid the reality that they or a relative will be affected by cancer at some point in life. It’s natural that someone who isn’t going to beat the disease would want to spend their last days at home with their family rather than in a hospital bed. And that’s where the Irish Cancer Society is so important.” Ber continues, “ I heard about the work the ICS does and said to myself, “I have to do something to support them” so that’s when I registered with the ICS on www.mycharity.ie and decided to have my head shaved.” As you can see from the photographs, Ber typically has a lush growth of long hair so her decision to shave it for this purpose fascinates and inspires those among us who associate hair with feminine beauty and with a strong sense of what a sacrifice is involved but Ber is refreshingly pragmatic in her decision making. “Really, my own reaction is that it’s good to help although I don’t seek the spotlight. I just think “not a bother” and that’s because I approve of what the ICS are doing. And I will certainly consider doing this again. The thing about hair is that it grows. It’s a small sacrifice.” The ‘Shave# Dye # Oh My’ idea at Today FM is a year-round event and everybody so inspired can set up an account at any time of the year and either shave their head, dye their hair or style it in an outsized or glamorous way, for charity. The ICS provides nursing services to family households which will cost 350 Euro for a dedicated cancer nurse in attendance from 11 pm - 7 am. They receive a very tiny budget from the taxpayer and provide a valuable service to a great number of families. It’s certainly a well worthwhile cause to support their work. Before head shave

Growing pains

The term “growing pains” may be a misnomer because there’s no evidence that growth hurts. Still, growing pains are real for many kids. And it’s important to take your child’s complaints seriously. Occasionally, what seems like growing pains are really due to an underlying condition that can be treated. Growing pains typically end by the teen years. In the meantime, simple comfort measures can help your child make it through the night.

Symptoms

Growing pains are often described as an ache or throb in the legs — often in the front of the thighs, the calves or behind the knees. Usually both legs hurt. Some children may also experience abdominal pain or headache during episodes of growing pains. Growing pains often strike in the late afternoon or early evening and disappear by morning. Sometimes the pain awakens a child in the middle of the night. Lifestyle remedies You can help ease your child’s discomfort with these home remedies: • Rub your child’s legs. Some children respond to gentle massage. Others feel better when they’re held or cuddled. • Stretch your child’s legs. You might make it a habit during the day and again before bedtime. • Use a heating pad. Heat can help soothe sore muscles. Use a heating pad on a low setting before bedtime or when your child complains of leg pain. Remove the heating pad once your child falls asleep. A warm bath before bedtime may help, too. • Try a pain reliever. Offer your child ibuprofen or paracetamol. • It may also help to simply offer your support. Remind your child that growing pains won’t last forever. If you would like more information on growing pains contact Garvan at Lynch’s Pharmacy on 4366923.

Big Hero 6 Review

Brain Teazer A train crossing from France into Germany suffered a terrible accident exactly at the border. According to international law in which country should the survivors be buried ?

Last Issue’s Answers Last Issue’s Teazer: Six men drove 240km (150 miles) in a car at an average speed of 100km/ph (62.5 mph). The journey took 2.4 hours. When they unpacked their luggage they realised that the car had a flat tyre during the entire journey. Why had they not noticed this before ? Last Issue’s Answer:

The flat tyre was in the spare

Last Issue’s Crossword Answer:

From Walt Disney Animation Studios---those same folks who gave us such animated gems as Wreck-It Ralph, Frozen, and Paperman--comes Big Hero 6. Set in the futuristic American-Japanese metropolis of San Fransokyo, the story quickly explodes into motion as our robotics genius protagonist, the very cleverly named ‘Hiro’ Hamada, discovers his life calling. Abandoning petty and illegal street robot fighting, Hiro instead focuses his attention on greater things, and applies to study at the local university to improve upon his revolutionary new microbots invention. It is there that Hiro meets Honey Lemon, Fred, Wasabi, GoGo, and last but certainly not least Baymax---the personal healthcare companion built by Hiro’s brother Tadashi. Yet, a catastrophic, tragic event sees Hiro’s life turned upside down and from the ashes an enemy is revealed. Hiro and Baymax must then team up with their friends to deal with this new threat. Even at a glance, Big Hero 6 looks stunning. It is an utter joy to watch, and the visuals are complimented by equally impressive voice acting. Baymax steals the show, played brilliantly by Scott Adsit. The film has a humble runtime of one hundred and two minutes, and never feels bloated or though it’s trying to provide something that it ultimately can’t. But most importantly, it has real heart. It’s moving just enough in just the right places, and is packed with great humour. Anyone who has seen the film will tell you that the episode wherein Baymax is operating on a lack of battery power---which appears strikingly similar to a human operating on an abundance of alcohol---is hilarious. If you haven’t seen Big Hero 6 already, then be sure to catch it in cinemas while you still can. It’s suitable (and, importantly, thoroughly enjoyable) for all ages, and will leave you with nothing but a smile. Oscar material indeed! Robert Fehily
