Palmento Dear Editor

On a recent trip home for the Christmas holidays, I had the pleasure of eating at Palmento pizzeria as advertised by the Douglas Post. It was one of the best pizzas I have ever tasted. Having been to many of the pizza chains in the past and been disappointed at best, finding a gem like this in Douglas was a great surprise! Well done to all involved, looking forward to my next visit home already! Kind regards, Orla Lough Moira, Co Armagh

Coffee Mornings for Mums this February at Douglas Court Shopping Centre

T

his February, Douglas Court Shopping Centre will host “Coffee Mornings for Mums” – a series of informal discussions and chats over coffee, hosted by parenting experts and bloggers for mums and mums-to-be. Every Wednesday morning at 11am, mums are invited to go along and meet other like-minded women and their “smallies” for chats in a number of the Centre’s coffee shops. The series kicks off on Wednesday, February 3rd in O’Brien’s, where Marie Barry-Murphy, founder of TheBeautMum blog and co-director of the #Cloggers Blogger group, will discuss getting fit post pregnancy. As a mum of four in her 30s, Marie will discuss her own fitness routine and how she got in shape for her first marathon last year. Marie is also a qualified personal shopper, stylist and makeup artist, and will share her tips on combining it all. On Wednesday, February 10th in BB’s Coffee & Muffins, Dr Amy Herlihy will discuss nutritional needs for mums, both pre and post pregnancy. Dr Herlihy is a GP specialising in nutritional medicine. Her clinic ‘Special Kids Medical Clinic’ helps parents and children manage their medical issues using dietary changes and nutritional supplements. Lisa Ryan, founder of parenting blog, Four Walls, Rainy Days will speak on Wednesday, February 17th in O’Brien’s on the topic of mental health and self-care in pregnancy and post-partum. Lisa has written extensively on the topic and is an advocate for mental healthcare, in particular regarding postnatal depression. She has direct experience with living with mental illness, having been diagnosed with postnatal depression after the birth of her son and this is a topic she feels women need to be able to talk to each other about as it can be an incredibly lonely and isolating time. Despite the serious content of her talk, she promises it will be a tad more light hearted while making sure the message gets across The “Coffee Mornings for Mums” series finishes up on Wednesday, February 24th in BB’s Coffee & Muffins with Eimear Hutchinson, founder of parenting and lifestyle blog, The Two Darlings, discussing beauty routines for mums. Eimear is an engineer, mum, wife, blogger and beauty columnist with The Irish Times and is currently taking some time out to mind her two small girls. She will be chatting about beauty tips and tricks for busy mums, multitasking products, time saving tricks, beauty routines for quick makeup application and for good skincare. She will also talk about some of the Irish beauty brands and businesses that will be featuring in her Irish Times column over the coming months. All mums are welcome and there is no cost to attend the coffee mornings. You can drop in for any or all of the sessions, and there is no need to book in advance.

The Douglas Writers Group meet on the second Friday of every month and its open to all people, including beginners, interested in writing. So even if you’re only half interested please come along and check us out. We look forward to meeting you ! (Inquiries 086 8839392) Happy New Year from all at Douglas Community Association (DCA)! We would like to wish all our supporters a very Happy New Year! A very special thanks to all the committed volunteers of the various service providers at the community centre, such as Meals & Wheels, Tidy Towns, building fundraisers, and Park Events Committee, to the business people of Douglas, and to the public in general for their huge generosity. So many people helped in so many ways throughout 2015 and we thank all of you. Highlights of the Year 2015 Completion of Phase 1 of the Building Project There was a huge ‘push’ going on throughout the year to get Phase 1 of our new extension completed, and it was not without some trials and tribulations, but with immense cooperation between

the parties involved, we got there. Our challenge for 2016 is to complete Phase 2 of the project which is to complete the internal fit-out of a new Meals-onWheels facility. St. Patrick’s Day Parade 2015 was bigger and better than ever. For the first time we had a Pipe Band - the Castlelyons’ Pipe Band, which gave a great buzz and atmosphere. So many more groups participated than in the previous two parades and Douglas West was thronged. The weather was brilliant on the day and it was great to see the streets of Douglas lined with people, dressed up in all shades of green, enjoying the whole spectacle. This was organized by our Events Committee, who also brought us Kevin’s Day Fundraiser for Crumlin Childrens’ Hospital, Harvest Festival and brought Santa and Christmas Lights to the park. Many people commented on how much they appreciated the lights this year, especially as the weather was so gloomy with all the rain.

Douglas Tidy Towns boosted their result by 6 marks in 2015, bringing their total marks this year to 279. Letterkenny, Co. Donegal, who were overall winners of the competition got a total of 323, so the gap is closing but it will take a lot of work, huge commitment, vision, planning and resources to close it. They continued their work on restoring the Mangala and also organized two events for Heritage Week, a Forest Forage Walk and a talk entitled “Millowners and Paupers, the Parish of St. Luke’s Douglas”, given by historian Dr. Aoife Bhreatnach. They also managed to win the ‘Muintir na Tire Pride of Place Competition’. This group can never rest on their laurels so they look forward to all the support the community can give in 2016 to get an even better result for Douglas. They meet in the park every Saturday morning from 10.30 to noon, high viz jackets and picks provided. What a great idea for a new year’s resolution to join them once a week for an hour or so!

Douglas Tidy Towns Anyone walking about Douglas last summer couldn’t but notice the huge effort that was made once again by Tidy Towns volunteers who planted myriad tubs and planters in our public spaces. A fantastic effort was also made again by the local business people which make both East and West Villages a pleasure to wander through or drive by.

Cork Co. Council Improvements in the Park Cork County Council provided exercise equipment suitable for all age groups in the park, completed a fenced-in kickabout hard surfaced area suited for basketball, football, etc. and are now completing a cycle path through the park from Church Road to Church St.

ISSUEStunning # 1037 1038 Transformation The of Penny Dinners

Ballinlough Community news

Frank Hanover I met with Charlie Galvin of Blarney Window Systems last week to learn something about how the recent transformation of Cork Penny Dinners which is feeding no fewer than 1800 people every week, has been achieved. Charlie, who project managed the entire upgrade explains how things went. “With the very good will of everybody involved in giving, free of charge, their time and resources it became obvious that this was a project that had to be managed. If it wasn’t managed there would have been chaos, that became obvious on a walk through when we first looked at what was needed. I basically fell into managing the project by accident and it stuck.” Since the 2009 flood the floors of Penny Dinners had been bodged and resurfaced to keep their integrity and these were going to have to be replaced. The roof was also going to have to be replaced. Even the walls were going to need dry-walling and because of the Brennan brothers At Your Service filming of the reveal the pressure on time was fierce. Caitriona Twomey and her volunteers came out on November 6th which was when the refurbishment began in earnest with the proviso that the refurbishment would be finished by November 27th the date of the RTE filmed reveal. The pressure was amazing but so was the work and the transformation to which so many Cork companies and individuals contributed. Charlie, “Hundreds of people and companies gave equipment, time and upgraded materials in that time frame. It was a phenomenal undertaking on the part of everyone involved. The project was heavily supported by Sidney McIllhenny and Brian McHugh from Envirobead and Unique Fitout who did much of the heavy lifting but there were many companies involved throughout and they were excellent.” The array of companies that also gave time and equipment says a great deal about how Cork responds in an extraordinary way to a noble call and to altruism. Macroom Motors gave a vehicle to Cork Penny Dinners. Asbestaway removed the roof and when they did a horrible storm happened that night and that necessitated a multi-disciplined approach to getting the interior dry once again. Cork Bar and Catering installed the professional kitchen that replaced the existing one. Ashgroves Skips were asked for a few skips to assist with rubble removal and came up with no fewer than ten. At Your Service producer Maura Hunter was amazed by the generosity and tirelessness shown at Cork, “The atmosphere in Cork was beautiful and different from projects undertaken in Dublin”, she said. Other companies who assisted greatly with the labour of love that is the Cork Penny Dinners transformatin were RJD Maintenance whose Richard Goggins, everybody laughingly agrees, “works in mysterious ways his wonders to perform”. CB Tool Hire were pivotal as were various personnel from the Army, MD O’Shea’s and Aidan Long Plumbing. The facias, gutters and soffits came from Free Form Plastics and the paint directly from Dulux. Deaf Enterprises beautifully resurfaced and padded the seating gratis and for free as well, while Kieran Myers of Water’s Glass was magnanimous to provide all the glass. The last word should go to Charlie Galvin of Blarney Window Systems, “If you’d told me before it happened that I’d spend the amount of time we did there, I’d have said “you’re nuts”. But the fact is, now I want to restructure my businesses -Charlie also has a building businessto allow for more altruistic work like this. It’s been an amazing experience. I brought my 8 and 5-year old children in to show what it was that I’d been spending time on once it was done. They hadn’t seen me much during the build.” And Charlie’s last word? “I have so much admiration for what Caitriona does.” Cork Penny Dinners is a voluntary service that’s become beloved while also becoming an emergency frontline service during the most recent two parliaments.

FUNDING OF €80,000 FOR CORK SPCA WELCOME

I

welcome the announcement that funding of €80,000 is going to the Cork Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (CSPCA), based in Mahon. It’s part of the allocation of €2.54 million to 140 organisations involved in safeguarding animal welfare around the country. Animal welfare organisations make an enormous contribution to the welfare of animals, by educating the public, intervening where appropriate and by providing facilities for at-risk animals. Due to new animal welfare legislation, including the new dog microchipping legislation coming into effect in March, they will have an increased workload this year. I am pleased that our government is in the position of being able to increase funding to animal welfare organisations for the fifth consecutive year. Animal cruelty is totally unacceptable and I would like to remind the public of the dedicated Animal Welfare Helpline in the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine to report incidents of animal cruelty: Call Save 0761 064408 or 01 607 2379.

Health

Ask your Phamacist By Garvan J. Lynch

Allergies Allergies occur when your immune system reacts to a foreign substance such as pollen, bee venom or pet dander. Your immune system produces substances known as antibodies. Some of these antibodies protect you from unwanted invaders that could make you sick or cause an infection. When you have allergies, your immune system makes antibodies that identify your particular allergen as something harmful, even though it isn’t. When you come into contact with the allergen, your immune system’s reaction inflames your skin, sinuses, airways or digestive system. Symptoms: Allergy symptoms depend on your particular allergy, and can involve the airways, sinuses and nasal passages, skin, and digestive system. Allergic reactions can range from mild to severe. In some severe cases, allergies can trigger a lifethreatening reaction in your body known as anaphylaxis. Causes:An allergy starts when the immune system mistakes a normally harmless substance for a dangerous invader. The

immune system then produces antibodies that are always on the alert for your particular allergen. When you’re exposed to the allergen again in the future, these antibodies release a number of immune system chemicals, such as histamine, that cause allergy symptoms. Treatment: Allergy treatments include: • Allergen avoidance. • Medications to reduce symptoms. • Immunotherapy. • Emergency epinephrine. Lifestyle remedies: Some allergy symptoms improve with home treatment. Sinus congestion and hay fever symptoms often improve with nasal lavage — rinsing out the sinuses with a saline solution. Household airborne allergy symptoms, such as those caused by dust mites or pet dander, may improve by taking steps to reduce your exposure to allergens. Steps include frequently washing bedding and stuffed toys in hot water, maintaining low humidity, regularly using a vacuum with a fine filter such as a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter, and replacing carpeting with hard flooring. Mold allergy symptoms may be alleviated by avoiding outdoor work in damp weather, wearing a dust mask while working outdoors, and keeping your windows closed at night. Douglas Flood Relief Scheme update

As you know, following the devastating flood of 2012, ARUP Consultants have been appointed by Cork County Council to develop a Flood Relief Scheme for Douglas. Stage one of this process is nearing completion and it is expected that a planning process will commence in the first half of this year, possibly around March / April. The detailed design phase must follow the planning process and it is hoped this will be complete in 2016. I appreciate that progress has been frustratingly slow on this project and at this stage a realistic estimate for the commencement of actual construction work would be early 2017. I will do my utmost to highlight the need to progress with this scheme as soon as possible given its critical importance.

Douglas Garda Station Opening Hours At a recent meeting of the Douglas Community Partnership Forum, the Gardai stated that they will be endeavouring to have the Garda Station open to the public between 10am - 6pm on weekdays. It may be necessary to close the station on occasion during these hours due to resource constraints. However, the station will be kept open where possible. Togher Garda Station is open to the Public at all times. The number of Gardai reduced considerably over the last number of years and I will welcome the recent recruitment campaign. A significant number of Gardai must be recruited to fully replenish the force and maintain the ongoing battle against crime and anti-social behaviour

Local TD Jerry Buttimer has welcomed that new plans for the N28 Cork-Ringaskiddy

I

am delighted that the Cork National Roads Design Office is rethinking its proposals for the Carr’s Hill interchange on the N28. Given the reaction to the plans published in 2015 the only reasonable outcome was that alternative designs would be considered. It is very much welcome to see that local concerns are being taken on board. Since the initial plans for the Carr’s Hill Junction local residents have been very active in having their say on the plans. At the public meeting I, along with Cllr Deirdre Forde, organised in October more than 200 people attended on a cold and wet night. At the subsequent public consultation over 800 people made the effort to participate in the process. This is real democracy and now the voice of the people is being taken on board. Trying to shoehorn a motorway into the existing road network around Mount Oval, Clarke’s Hill, Moneygourney and Rochestown Road was always going to be extremely difficult. But the initial plans were unrealistic. Clarke’s Hill and Coach Hill simply couldn’t cope with the increased traffic that was going to result from the initial plans. Improving the N28 is a necessary project, it is required for the future of development of the area and it is necessary for communities living in Carrigaline, Ringaskiddy and Shanbally. Already the road struggles to cope with existing volumes of travelling and it needs to be upgraded. But any plans must address the needs of residents along the route and it cannot result in extra traffic on small roads that were not designed such traffic volumes. Hopefully the revised plans, which are expected by April, will address these issues and the needs of people living in the area.

ompassion in action in government. That should be the watchword for any government. When you have power it is your responsibility to use it wisely for the benefit of all. Some people have been in power so long they can’t feel the pain anymore. The old Irish phrase comes to mind ‘’It’s grand for some”. So it’s important to feel people’s pain if you are to understand their situation. Let me be brutally honest here.....I know what it’s like to run your own business......I know what it’s like to lose it. I know what it’s like to be a PAYE worker on low pay. I know what it’s like to have money. I know what it’s like to be dependent on social welfare. I know the Difference between being financially secure and living from pay check to pay check. I know what it’s like to feel you are being left behind....ignored... while others seem to prosper. I am a Qualified Financial Adviser....so I know we need to keep recovery going. We also need to make sure that the big boys are not the only ones to benefit. The over fifties, the self employed, the PAYE workers, college students, people on huge variable mortgages or high rents all need urgent help. Google ....Joe Harris cork and see my interview on youtube with Brendan O Connor. I’m here. The outsider ..fighting back for you and me. Auditions for Crazy for You Cork City Musical Society is hosting auditions for its second musical outing. This time they take on Crazy for You in late April. This year auditions for ensemble and principal parts will take place at Firkin Crane Theatre, Shandon on Saturday 23 January, 2-5pm. Auditionees are asked to prepare one song from any musical. Script material will be there on the day. Participants must be over 18 to join Cork City Musical Society; to book an audition time slot please log on and message our facebook page Cork City Musical Society or email corkmusicalsociety@gmail.com.The show is being directed by Cllr Kieran McCarthy, with musical direction by Michael Young and choreography by Aisling Byrne Gaughan. Founder of the society Cllr Kieran McCarthy noted “Amateur musical societies are multiple in nature up and down the country. All bring their local communities together under a volunteer and charity umbrella – collaborating and bringing people together to create an outlet for people and to put drama, music and all ultimately form a key cultural vein within towns and villages. The creation of an amateur musical society brings together many strands but in particular focuses on the aspect of community building and the promotion of musical theatre amongst adults and the idea of inclusivity and self-development for all who wish to engage with it”.

McCarthy’s Ward Funds 2016 Cllr Kieran McCarthy is calling on any community groups in the south east ward of Cork City, which includes areas such as Ballinlough and Douglas Road, with an interest in sharing in his 2016 ward funding to apply for his funds. A total of E.8,000 is available to community groups through Cllr Kieran McCarthy’s ward funds. Application should be made via letter (see www.kieranmccarthy.ie for address) or email to Kieran at info@kieranmccarthy.ie by Friday 12 February 2016. This email should give the name of the organisation, contact name, telephone number, details of the organisation, and what will the ward grant will be used for? Ward funds will be prioritised to community groups in the south east ward who build community capacity, educate, build civic awareness and projects, which connect the young and old. Cllr. McCarthy especially welcomes proposals where the funding will be used to run a community event that benefits the wider community. In addition, he is seeking to fund projects that give people new skill sets. That could include anything from part funding of coaching training for sports projects to groups interested in bringing enterprise programmes to encourage entrepreneurship to the ward. Cllr McCarthy is also particularly interested in funding community projects such as community concerts, coffee mornings and those that promote the rich history and environment within the south east ward. More guidelines can be viewed under ward funds at his blog at www.kieranmcarthy.ie.

Last Week’s Answer

Mr White was , or at least his ashes. His last request was that his remains be interred in the local cemetery. The German authorities did not know who to address the urn to and so came up with a rather strange solution to their dilemma.
