Douglas Writers Group The next meeting of the Douglas Writers Group will be held in John O’Sullivan’s (Business Centre), Douglas on Friday 12th June. at 5.30 pm. The Douglas Writers Group meets on the 2nd Friday of every month at 5.30pm. Volunteer Week in May Did you know that 12,400 volunteers engaged with I-VOL and local Volunteer Centres in 2014 and these volunteers clocked up an incredible 470,000 hours of volunteering? Volunteering is a great way to make friends with whom you may share mutual interests. There are many activities going on at our centre, for example, if you like to cook, our Meals-on-Wheels cooks would be glad of your help. If you enjoy the outdoors, why not help out with Tidy Towns; they need many people to help plant up containers with flowers around Douglas. If organising events is your forte, our Park Events Committee would be thrilled with your help. We hold regular fund-raisers such as bagpacking at local supermarkets, and we also need people to help out with church gate collections. We are always in need of funding for our projects, so please do not be shy, and put yourself forward for an hour or two, or more. Douglas Community Association is always happy to have new people join them. Indeed you can make a contribution from your own home, by organising a coffee morning with your neighbours and donating the funds to our building project for a new mealson-wheels kitchen. Contact us by e-mail at douglasca@eircom.net or drop a note with your details into the centre.
Douglas Tidy Towns The Fingerpost Roundabout is looking very good as usual. The old roses were replaced with Photinia Red Robin in the centre of each triangle and surrounded with smaller plants. There has been a change of Landscaper but the previous high standard is being maintained. Douglas Tidy Towns are pleased too that all the grassed areas on the roads leading to the roundabout are also being cut and the Committee of D.T.T. are currently busy filling all the containers with plants and summer bedding for the coming season. Volunteers meet every Saturday morning at 10.30 and work until midday, so please come along if you can, picks and high viz jackets supplied. It’s now competition time and that it would be great if locals keep up the good work and put in additional efforts to look after their areas. Clean-up in Doman’s Wood The work continues at Doman’s Wood and Cork County Council have now pledged to help out with the work, but a lot needs to be done so local volunteers willing to pledge an hour or two can make contact with Tidy Towns people on Saturday morning at the Community Park and can contribute to the clean up of this lovely area. There has been years of dumping going
DTT Musical Evening – Date for your Diary We have had three wonderful Tidy Towns concerts held in the early part of the year for the last three years and this event is always a sell-out. Many people have enquired if it’s going to happen this year. Marian from Tidy Towns, who coordinates the event, asked if you would note this very important date in your diary as it is planned for Wednesday 4th Nov. next. So don’t miss out! Lichen Walk at the Community Park There was a very interesting walk in the Community Park last Friday led by Paul Whelan and organised by Cork Environmental Forum and Cork Nature Network who showed many interesting examples of Woodland Lichen. Ronnie McGinn’s
Poetry Corner When the burden of our modern world becomes “…..full of care?” along comes Frank E. Lee to remind us there are more important things in life than Banks. Frank is a prominent member of the Douglas Writers Group and is best know for his inspiring short stories and honest opinions. Frank’s humorous poem entwines itself between the symbolic parallels of life and materialism, the image and rhythm of his poem strikes a note on everyone’s piano, but by its very simplicity the poem is overpowering and must stand as an inspiring thought provoker to us all. Nice one Frank!
Never Been This Old Before These past few months I’ve slowed down My old bones ache, my feet are sore Now I seldom even walk to town – For I’ve never been this old before The boy on the bus gave me his seat A young girl held open a bank door – To be honest I was feeling down beat As I’ve never been this old before

At times when I look in a mirror I see an unfamiliar face gazing at me – So I shake my self up with a shiver Wondering who the old codger could be! The Very Busy Working Life of Captain Michael McCarthy at the Port of Cork By Frank Hanover
Captain McCarthy’s role being as prominent as it is, Cork harbour and the Port of Cork’s sphere of influence are to play a pivotal role in drawing towards this part of the world the vast plethora of huge, stunningly appointed and state-of-the-art ocean going liners that have so enthused so many Cork people in recent years. With the Royal Princess set to arrive in Cobh on June 4th no fewer than 37 ocean going liners will dock at Cobh between now and the end of the season on October 10th with the Royal Princess returning on a handful of occasions alongside the arrival of such beautiful and vast craft as the Brilliance of the Seas, the Boudicca, the Europa, the Azores as well as many others. It certainly appears that with Captain Michael McCarthy of the Port of Cork at the helm of decisionmaking both in Cork and in the wider European marketplace, Cork will be spoilt for choice where cruise liners and the possibility of engagement with cruise holidays is concerned.
C
aptain Michael McCarthy of the Port of Cork is a very highly motivated executive in the life of the city of Cork these days as I discovered when speaking with him about upcoming events in the harbour recently. In addition to a serious engagement with the Lusitania commemoration Captain McCarthy was in recent attendance at Santander in Spain where the mutinational Cruise Europe organization re-elected Michael as its chairman moving into the next phase of the organization’s efforts at locating cruises in the forefront of people’s aspiration and desire. “Cork people love the whole cruise liner experience so we’ve had a really successful year with the drawing in of cruise liners to the harbour in 2014. That’s set to be matched by another 62 liners docking in Cobh this year. Already, we’ve taken bookings for another 60 liners arriving in the harbour in 2016 so Cruise Europe and how we’re assisting cruise participation is producing a serious economic picture in the harbour.” Michael’s participation as Chairman of Cruise Europe makes for interesting numerical consideration as regards the harbour. There are no fewer than 118 European cruise companies affiliated with Cruise Europe and each of these has a long term business plan to make access to cruise an luxurious yet affordable reality the emphasis of which will produce quality and value. Gardening Things to do This Week
Sometimes it can go against the grain to even mention getting ready for winter or next spring before our summer has really started, unfortunately it must be done, but we’ll make every effort to keep it to the occasional hint. As usual we try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week. Flower Garden Start taking soft cuttings of shrubs for rooting under glass. Take cuttings (pipings) of pinks and border carnations, and root in a frame. Prune remaining Buddleia davidli stems this month for late flowers. For top quality rose blooms, remove side buds to leave a single main bud. Prune any large branches from walnuts, magnolias and prunus species, and paint the wounds with pruning compound. Kitchen Garden Start gathering herbs in quantity for drying or freezing. A batch of small fast carrots sown now will miss attacks by carrot root flies. Water young and leafy crops, and then mulch if prolonged dry weather is forecast. Thin and peg down strawberry runners needed for propagation. Sow perpetual spinach for winter and spring use. Sow dwarf French beans for late crops under cloches. Pinch out the sideshoots of figs to 3-4 leaves. Spray potatoes with a copper fungicide if there are signs of blight. Stop pulling rhubarb this week, feed if not down, and leave to grow unchecked.
1. 8
Lawns & Hedges Rake up freshly mown areas of naturalised bulbs after seeds have had time to fall out, and dress the area with general fertiliser Green House Take cuttings of geraniums, fuchsias, marguerites and other plants to train as standards. Introduce predators if greenhouse whitefly and red spider mites become troublesome. Start thinning grapes as trusses develop. Apply full shading to the glass, if not already done. Check growing bags daily for watering; install an automatic trickle system to save work. Stop large-flowered chrysanthemums now, and again in 6-8 weeks’ time. Stand greenhouse pots on capillary matting if watering becomes onerous in hot weather. Water Garden Remove algae before it can build up, top up ponds in hot weather, and aerate the surface if fish are gasping for air. In General Finish all seasonal planting before the weather turns hot and dry, mulch and water until established. Don’t forget to sow your winter flowering pansies.

Dear Editor
Douglas Post Office
It was with regret I learned of Bill Jones’s retirement from the Douglas Post Office. Bill is a very honorable man and he and his staff have served the community well over the past 25 years and for their good work and kind attention every resident of Douglas will be forever grateful.
4,6
However it was a severe shock to learn that the entire Post Office staff and being let go. This they tell me is because of a clause in the Redundancy Act. What utter nonsense! This is an absolute disgrace! The new management team is not to blame for this and neither is Bill Jones. It’s the system! Can anyone do anything about this? What do we elect people for? Your in a job for twenty years and new management take over and you’re out on you ear because of a Welfare technicality. God Save Ireland ! Frank Merkin Douglas
If the Law is an Ass, a Referendum is a Donkey. Dear Editor
Impossible If nothing is impossible and I’m doing nothing - I’m doing the impossible ....
I had not followed the debates on the merits or demerits of Friday 22nd May, 2015 constitution referenda, nor had I received information literature in my mailbox. At the polling station, an official issued me with two ballot sheets. The provisions of the referenda were fixed to the partition wall in the polling booth, but not at eye level. I had occasion to stoop to read the printed details. On the marriage referendum, I quickly deduced the wording was designed to get a Yes majority. If the wording had been “Do you agree that there is no inequality between marriage as already defined in the Article 41 of the constitution and same sex couple cohabiting, a different result would ensue? So as get a fair result, should recent precedent be followed by quickly holding another referendum on the issue with different wording? On the second ballot paper, what was on offer was skimpy, a vote on reducing the age to become President from thirty five to twenty one. Changes in the constitution to become President should have offered choices on the upper age limit, for instant, fifty five or sixty and should a term of office be limited to seven years? What can an aged incumbent achieve in a second seven years period that can not be achieved in the first? Should referenda be held to establish a consensus on the wording of referenda?

Sweet Charity
D
ouglas Road Cllr Kieran McCarthy will direct and produce Sweet Charity, the musical at the Firkin Crane from Thursday 4- Sunday 7 June. Commenting he noted: “It goes without saying that a rich vein of musicality runs underneath our city, Cork’s DNA embraces the promotion and development of music as an artistic discipline to be developed and one that brings a community together to engage with and appreciate it. The city in musical theatre terms is particularly blessed by several stage schools, small and large, who promote amongst our young people creativity, skill development, education, performance, community building and audience development, and the charity of sharing their craft, amongst other important traits”. Sweet Charity tells the story of dance hall hostess Charity Hope Valentine, an eternal optimist who is forever unlucky in love. This is a comedy with an edge. Douglas resident, church organist and choir master David O’Sullivan, the musical director, has brought the sweeping jazz and sassy score alive whilst Aileen Coffey has framed Bob Fosse’s choreography whilst bringing her own mark in reframing the power of dance and story-telling. With production management by Yvonne Coughlan the new Cork City Musical Society promises to entertain you with a highly-theatrical, fastpaced and entertaining show, featuring such well-known musical numbers as “If My Friends Could See Me Now,” “Big Spender” and “Rhythm of Life”. Cork City Musical Society was set up by Kieran earlier this year. He noted “Amateur musical societies are multiple in nature up and down the country. All bring their local communities together under a volunteer and charity umbrella collaborating and bringing people together to create an outlet for people and to put on drama and music and all ultimately form a key cultural vein within towns and villages”. s your spine changes, you may notice strengths and weaknesses you were not aware of before you started receiving chiropractic care. Participate in exercises which strengthen your body, and avoid jarring activities which place harmful stress on your neck and spine. Yoga and pilates are focused on your core and associate well with chiropractic care. In all forms of exercise, keep your neck in an upright position. Avoid forward flexion of your neck, particularly during work-outs with weights, as this movement can reverse the proper forward curve in the neck, and therefore interfere with your adjustment (which aims to restore and maintain proper alignment). Many activities in our culture, such as using computers, driving vehicles, and reading books, tend to subluxate the neck into a damaging position. Make a habit of stretching your cervical spine “up and backward” several times per day. Further specific home exercise may be advised for your particular case. Sit-ups on an exercise ball are preferable to floor sit-ups, to avoid compression of your spinal joints, and to promote elongation and stretching of your spine. When doing any sort of low back exercise, avoid extending your spine backward beyond 180ْ . There is no need or purpose for your spine to be exerted beyond the normal standing posture (which is 180ْ ) and doing so can compress the joints of the lumbar vertebrae. When stretching, avoid sudden twists, or movements beyond normal limits of motion, particularly in the neck. Stretching to the end of your range of motion is encouraged. If you hear an audible sound come from your spine during proper stretching, do not be alarmed. However, under no circumstances should you attempt to “force” an audible sound by stretching of “cracking” any part of your spine. Research has shown this type of activity to cause spinal damage, ligament laxity, and disc irritation. Chiropractic adjustments specifically address subluxated vertebrae, while gross manipulations of the entire regions of the spinal column can aggravate vertebrae that are already subluxated. In lay terms; don’t try to crack your own back! Article Courtesy of Hardick Chiropractic Centre Visit our practice today so we can share with you more tips on gaining greater flexibility! YOUNG AT HEART With Phil Goodman

n today’s busy world where channels of communication have grown ever more technical and sophisticated, we can also forget the value of talking and listening to each other. It may be surprising that summertime can be a lonely time for older people. But remember this is a time when families and neighbours go away and an older person can be left with little variation in their day and little to look forward to. We would encourage anyone who feels lonely, whatever the weather to give us a ring and join us on one of our many trips. Many of our weekly activities including knitting, bingo, bowls, T’ai C’hi, computer classes and gym all finish for June and July as we enjoy the many trips we have planned. We will visit: • Griffins Garden Centre • Bord Gais Theatre • Skerkin Island • Roscrea Abbey • Ballycotton Lighthouse • Naval Base • Round the Fireside Radio Show Anyone who would like to take part in the radio show, sing a song, tell a story, recite a poem, we will record two shows on July 9th which will be broadcast on two consecutive Monday nights on 103 FM.

The trip to Lithuania was a wonderful experience, what a beautiful country. You would have to see the churches and buildings to appreciate it. We visited the Irish Ambassador David Noonan at his residence where we spent a lovely afternoon with him and his family. HEALTH
Ask your Phamacist By Garvan J. Lynch
Cough A cough is a reflex action to clear your airways of mucus and irritants such as dust or smoke. Coughs may be dry or chesty. They’re also classified according to how long they last: acute cough lasts for less than three weeks subacute cough gets better over a three-to-eight-week period chronic (persistent) cough lasts for longer than eight weeks Coughs caused by the common cold or by flu usually clear up after several days. Most coughs clear up within two weeks.
What are the causes? Most people with a cough have a respiratory tract infection caused by a virus, such as the common cold, flu or bronchitis. A persistent cough in adults may be caused by a condition such as rhinitis, or by a prescribed medicine such as an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE)-inhibitor, which is used to treat high blood pressure or cardiovascular disease, or by smoking. In children, a persistent cough may indicate a more serious respiratory tract infection such as whooping cough. Dry cough versus chesty cough
Dry cough Dry coughs are usually felt in the throat as a tickle that sets off the coughing. It happens when the throat and upper airways become inflamed (swollen). It is non-productive, which means that phlegm (thick mucus) isn’t produced. The common cold or flu causes a dry cough because your brain thinks the inflammation in your throat and upper airways is a foreign object and tries to remove it by coughing. Chesty cough A chesty cough usually produces phlegm. The cough is helpful, because it clears the phlegm from your lung passages. Cough suppressants act on the brain to hold back the cough reflex. They’re used for dry coughs only. Expectorants help bring phlegm up so that coughing is easier, which help chesty coughs.

Diet & Blood Pressure
Nutrition, Diet and Health Research at UCC
N Volunteers are required to take part in a nutrition study at the School of Food and Nutritional Sciences, UCC. Interested in participating?
You are eligible if you are:
• 50-66 years old • Non-smoker • Not on medication for blood pressure or cholesterol • Have slightly raised blood pressure- (we will check this for you) • In good general health without diagnosed heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease or gastrointestinal disease
utrition plays an important role during all stages of the life cycle, from maternal health during pregnancy to healthy ageing in later life. The nutrition researchers at the School of Food and Nutritional Sciences at UCC are currently conducting nutrition and health research across a range of population groups in the Cork area. Vitamin D, which is in short supply in Ireland for most of the year, has been shown to play an important role during pregnancy, with established benefits for both the expectant mother and her offspring. However, at present, it is not known how much vitamin D a woman requires during her pregnancy. The Vitamin D Research Group at UCC are currently recruiting pregnant women in the Cork area to take part in a nutrition-based study (DMAT), the findings of which will guide vitamin D recommendations in pregnancy, both in Ireland and internationally. If you are interested in taking part, please contact the DMAT Study team on 021-4903606. The research team also has a strong focus on the role of diet in healthy ageing with links to heart and bone health. Heart disease is the most common cause of death in Ireland, with hypertension or high blood pressure being one of the major risks associated with heart disease. It is well established that diet can play a significant role in the prevention and treatment of hypertension. The researchers at UCC are currently investigating the role of nutrition and the inclusion of specific foods within the diet for the reduction of blood pressure and the promotion of heart health. CIARAN LYNCH TD
UNEMPLOYMENT DROPS BELOW 10% FOR THE FIRST TIME IN SEVEN YEARS
C
iarán Lynch TD welcomes the latest figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) which show that the unemployment rate has fallen to 9.9%. That means that 41,300 more people are now at
work since this time last year. “According to the Quarterly National Household survey data released this morning (Thursday May 21), this represents an increase in those in full-time employment of 52,100 and a decrease in part-time employment of 10,800. It is the first time since 2008 that the unemployment rate has fallen below 10%. It proves that our Action Plan for Jobs is delivering. There are 10,000 more people at work in the first three months of this year alone. Finding work after a period of unemployment is life-changing, and that is not just to the person who has got the job, but also to their family. It also has wider and positive knock-on effects on the community they live in and for the State, as that person becomes a contributor through income tax. It is also really heartening to see that the vast majority of the jobs that are being created are full-time and many of those who were in part-time employment are now moving to more secure employment. In government we continue to focus on creating decent, sustainable jobs. These figures show that the Government’s approach is working. It is encouraging to see that the long-term unemployment levels are continuing to fall – down to 5.9% Ciarán Lynch TD from 7.3% over the past year. It is still too high, but through Pathways to Work led by Labour Party leader and Tánaiste Joan Burton, we are striving to ensure that as many of the new jobs as possible are Constituency Office going to people on the Live Register. 29 St. Patrick’s Mills I am particularly pleased to see the high rise in the numbers of people working in construction Douglas after the hammering that sector took during the bust. There are 19,600 more people working in Tel: 021 4366200 construction in the last year, a leap of 19.1%.” Fax: 021 4366202 The figures released today show that unemployment in Ireland is now broadly in line with the other ciaran.lynch@oir.ie EU28 countries.

Buttimer thanks people of Ireland for their generosity of spirit in voting Yes
T
he Chair of the Fine Gael LGBT Group, Jerry Buttimer TD, has expressed his gratitude to the people of Ireland for voting yes in the Marriage Equality Referendum. “With this massive endorsement the people have affirmed that we are all equals as citizens under our Constitution. We are now the first country in the world to democratically vote in favour of equal marriage. And we did so resoundingly. This says a huge amount about who we are and will change how the world views us. “I want to thank the people of Ireland from the bottom of my heart for their generosity of spirit in voting Yes. This is a statement that our country values all of us the same as everyone else irrespective of who we are and who we love. “It’s an emotional day for a lot of people including myself. So many people have given so much of themselves in this campaign. I am bowled over by the amount of people who travelled across the country and the many thousands who travelled from overseas in order to vote Yes. This huge Yes vote was driven by a strong sense of social justice. “I am proud of the superb campaign that my Party, Fine Gael has run. It has been a wonderful journey with a hugely positive involvement from the party. The journey started with the foundation of Fine Gael LGBT Group in 2012. That year we marched with pride in our first Pride Parade under the Party banner and with its full support. The visit by the Taoiseach to the Panti Bar sent a hugely positive message to the LGBT community and was one of the indicators that change was on the way. “As Chair of the Fine Gael LGBT Group, I am very proud of the group, its members and the mark we have made within the Fine Gael Party and in helping to bring about this historic result. The Group has been a catalyst for change within the Party and Fine Gael was extremely receptive to that change. For that I am extremely grateful. I want to commend An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny and the Director of Elections, Simon Coveney TD for their fantastic contribution to this momentous event. “We have had a wonderful national conversation, which has been facilitated by Yes Equality, a group of people who have never been involved in a political campaign, who went out, told their story and sought the permission of the Irish people to marry. This has now been achieved. It’s an historical day not just for gay community but for all of us. Ireland will be a better place as result.”

Special 30kmph Speed Limit in Residential Estates Welcome
I
very much welcome the progress made by Cork County Council on introducing a reduced speed limit of 30 kmph in some residential estates. The Council will shortly publish a pilot list of over 60 estates in Cork County for the introduction of a special speed limit of 30 kmph. Currently, the 50 kmph speed limit applies in residential estates. This is a pilot scheme across the County and the estates selected in the Douglas area are Shamrock Lawn, Alden and Oakview. One of the most common issues raised by residents in estates is excessive speed. I believe residents in other estates would also welcome the introduction of this reduced speed limit and I would fully support the Council in rolling out this initiative further. This move in itself is by no means the full solution, however I believe it is a significant step forward in the battle to improve safety within estates. Most importantly, this initiative will send out a clear message that careful and cautious driving is required in housing estates. Once final approval is given for the reduced speed limit, additional signage will be erected in the estates to alert drivers to the lower speed limit. It is expected that final approval from Council will be sought in September, after which the new speed limit will become operational. As you know, the campaign to reduce speed limits in estates has gained national attention through the courageous efforts of Roseann Brennan following the tragic death of her son Jake in County Kilkenny. This is a very worthwhile campaign and I hope that sufficient funding is provided by the Department of Transport to allow Local Authortities proceed as soon as possible.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS By Blackrock Citizens Information Service
Question:
What is the new Back to Work Family Dividend?
Answer:
The Back to Work Family Dividend (BTWFD) scheme aims to help families to move from social welfare into employment. It gives extra financial support to people with qualified children who stop claiming a jobseeker’s payment or a one-parent family payment because they have taken up employment or self-employment. If you qualify for the scheme you will get a weekly payment for up to 2 years. For the first year in employment you will be paid the equivalent of any Increases for Qualified Children that were being paid on your jobseeker’s or one-parent family payment (up to a maximum of 4 children). Half that amount will be paid weekly for the second year. To qualify, you and all members of your family (including your adult dependant) must sign off all primary social welfare payments. However the Back to Work Family Dividend can be paid with Family Income Supplement (FIS) and is not taken into account in the means test for FIS. It can also be paid if your spouse, civil partner or cohabitant finds work, provided you are getting an Increase for a Qualified Adult on your payment for them. However, you must meet the conditions and the Back to Work Family Dividend will be paid to you (as the recipient of the social welfare payment). BTWFD can be paid with some non-primary social welfare payments such as Child Benefit, Rent Supplement and Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance (see citizensinformation.ie for the full list). The habitual residence condition applies to BTWFD. Applications for the scheme have been accepted since Monday 5 January 2015.The scheme became fully operational on 5 May 2015.
