MAYOR’S GREETING Welcome to this issue of our Douglasville Impact Newsletter. This summer has flown by! I’m so happy that we were able to bring back our annual 4th of July Parade. I hope that you all were able to join us to celebrate our nation’s independence. In this edition of the Douglasville Impact Newsletter, we will be talking about ways that you and your family can “Fall into Fun”. Early fall is always exciting! A new school year has begun, providing an opportunity for students to start off on the right foot for learning. The leaves will start changing into beautiful colors, the weather will get cooler, and it becomes so pleasant being outside. We hope that you will enjoy the coolness at our many fall events and activities. Of course, this time of year can also be fraught with bad weather due to hurricane season. This is part of the reason why we also wanted to highlight National Preparedness Month. Make sure you read all about it this month and discover how you and your family can be prepared for disasters and emergencies. Please make sure to stay up to date on all the latest happenings in the city through our website, www.douglasvillega.gov or by following us on all social media platforms. As always, I wish God’s blessings on you, your families, and the City of Douglasville. Mayor Rochelle Robinson City of Douglasville

September is recognized as National Preparedness Month by the Ready Campaign. Ready is FEMA’s public service campaign encouraging Americans to plan ahead for disasters. Now is a great time to remind our citizens to update their emergency kit, create a family communication plan, and practice their evacuation route (don't forget to include your pets). To learn more about National Preparedness Month, visit ready.gov/september. Locally, citizens are encouraged to register for the CodeRed Community Notification which is managed through Douglas County Emergency Management Agency. This free alert service provides an additional form of communication in an emergency situation where there is a risk of significant harm, an urgent threat, or when a general notification is needed. Subscribers can request to be notified by cell phone, email, home phone, or text messages. To subscribe, visit douglasvillega.gov/CodeRed. When you have an emergency, you call 911. When we know of an emergency, 911 wants to be able to call you!

The 3 R's of your Emergency Kit

1. Replace expired items as needed. 2. Re-think your needs every year and update your kit as your family’s needs change. 3. Remember the unique needs of your family and have a separate bag of essentials for senior citizens and pets.

Basic Disaster Supplies Kit

To assemble your kit, store items in airtight plastic bags and put your entire disaster supplies kit in one or two easy-to-carry containers such as plastic bins or a duffel bag. A basic emergency supply kit could include the following recommended items: • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Water (One Gallon Per Person, Per Day) Food (at least a several-day supply of non-perishable food) Battery-Powered or Hand-Crank Radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with Tone Alert Flashlight First Aid Kit Extra Batteries Whistle (to signal for help) Dust Mask (to help filter contaminated air) Plastic Sheeting and Duct Tape (to shelter in place) Moist Towelettes, Garbage Bags, and Plastic Ties (for personal sanitation) Wrench or Pliers (to turn off utilities) Manual Can Opener (for food) Local Maps Cell Phone with Chargers and a Backup Battery

FROM THE CITY MANAGER’S DESK The City of Douglasville strives to deliver and offer services that our community needs and enjoys. September is National Preparedness Month. Being prepared is a critical component of service delivery. In the case of an emergency, we understand the community’s expectation is that the city will deliver quality and on time services. Our police department responds to thousands of calls on a routine basis addressing emergency situations. Being prepared can be a matter of life or death. Our Public Services department stands ready during inclement and life-threatening weather. We understand that you are counting on us to respond to downed power lines, fallen trees, and other hazardous conditions caused by nature. We are encouraging our entire community to create a plan of action in the case of an emergency. Creating a plan of action for yourself, your family, and/or business can be the difference between saving a life or business or not. As always, it is an honor and a privilege to be able to serve you and the Douglasville Community. Stay safe and prepared. Stay updated on important alerts and information for our citizens by visiting our website www.douglasvillega.gov or following us on social media.

In 2016 Douglasville/Douglas County voters approved a Special Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST). These funds were committed to capital improvements in the areas of Transportation/Public Works, Public Safety, Parks & Recreation, and City Facilities. Over the past 6 years, the City has received roughly $40 Million from the 2016 SPLOST program allowing the community to see major improvements and capital projects move forward without the need to increase property taxes. During the same 6-year period the city’s millage rate decreased from 8.437 to 8.111.
