IMPORTANT UPDATES:

New policies are in place as of January 2019 Traditionally the city has allowed candidates to place signs at two locations on railroad propertyBankhead Hwy at the intersection of Fairburn Rd and West Strickland Street at the intersection of Chicago Avenue. Please be aware that signs are not allowed in any part of the railroad right-of-way.

Guide to Erecting Short-term Signs for Elections


YARD SIGNS Materials: Required: supported by a wood or metal pole or frame. Prohibited: illuminated elements, florescent colors or ink. Permit: Not Required. Regulations by land use: Residential Property: Maximum size: Area: 4.5 feet. Height: 3 feet from higher of ground or roadway.

SHORT-TERM FREESTANDING SIGNS.

OTHER REGULATED SIGN TYPES

Type of property: Allowed on Non-residential property only.

Window signs: size limited to less than 50% of the window area; no illumination allowed.

Maximum size: Area: 16 feet. Height: 12 feet from higher of ground or roadway. Permit: Not Required. Number allowed: During political season: unlimited. Not political season: one per parcel

Number allowed: During political season: unlimited. Not political season: one per parcel, in addition to other types of signs. Non-Residential Property: Maximum size: Area: 16 feet. Height: 12 feet from higher of ground or roadway for the first one; others during political season limited to 8 feet. Number allowed: During political season: unlimited. Not political season: one per parcel, in addition to other types of signs.

Banners: Allowed on nonresidential property only, with a 30-day permit once every three months, attached to a wall or window.

PROHIBITED SIGNS: Signs placed on utility poles, traffic signs, fence posts, city property, or any railroad property This information is a synopsis, and other additional rules apply. Other types of signs not mentioned here may also be used for campaign purposes.

Rules applicable to both yards signs and short-term freestanding signs: Must have the permission of the property owner where located. Must be set back from curb or roadway at least 12 feet, and at least 3 feet off the right of way. Must be set back from side and rear property lines at least 10 feet. If within 20 feet of a street intersection or a driveway entrance, must be less than 30 inches in height, and may not block vehicle visibility.
