02_FIRE STATION AS A NATIONAL PRESERVE
Fire Station 62 as a National Preserve is created in the spirit of National Parks. The site is located on the border of the Phoenix South Mountain Preserve and shares its natural beauty. A rugged hiking trail and wash - etched over time - transverse the eastern half of the site and serve as a reminder of the destructive forces of man and nature. The design response seeks to preserve, leverage and co-exist with nature. Buildings required to touch the earth shall be of the earth, while others shall float above. Strategies include shading, natural light and ventilation, use of a rammed earth thermal masses and a southern orientation, leveraging renewable resources of sun and reclaiming water. Structures are spaced so views and nature flow, celebrating the Sonoran Desert and providing sensory experiences with natural flora and wildlife integration. Private dorm decks create respites for reflection on occupational stressors. A multi-use lookout tower facilitates training and public engagement through eduction on desert survival and safety.

04_WATERFRONT TIMBERS
Waterfront Timbers is a submission for the Timber in the City Competition in New York City. Waterfront Timbers leverages biophilic design to create an urban respite to the concrete-steel construction of the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge and neighboring sky-scrapers. The affordable housing project totaled 848,297 SF including 60,293 SF of commercial space. Moments were created to develop a sense of community, a nurturing environment, celebration spaces and organic gardens for growth. Key programmatic elements, the Early Childhood Development Center and Adult Wellness Center, were strategically placed at the waterfront park to promote a healthier lifestyle. The riverfront boardwalk and restored Historic Terra Cotta Works gathering space provide “gateways” for the public and embrace the extended community.

05_BARRIO FABRIC
Barrio Fabric is a fashion incubator in the Historic Barrio in Tucson, Arizona. The design solution revives the spirit of the “corner market” that once united the community with mixed social, historical and cultural context. Moments provide a nurturing collaborative space for designers and resources for an otherwise disenfranchised community. The multi-functional adaptive space provides flexibility to design, manufacture and hold fashion shows in the same space. The runway can expand onto sidewalks in the community. The street level studios and retail spaces are open to the manufacturing/runway floor below for multi-dimensional interactions.
