A genuine artefact of Australia’s first naval victory, when HMAS Sydney defeated Germany’s SMS Emden in the Battle of the Cocos Islands in 1914, the Sydney-Emden Medal is a great Australian rarity.
Of the 6,429 Mexican Silver 8 Reales found aboard the Emden, 1,000 were given to William Kerr jewellers to produce the Sydney-Emden Medal. A superb piece of military memorabilia, each silver dollar is adorned with the King’s Crown, united with scrolls inscribed ‘NOV 1914’ and ‘HMAS.
SYDNEY.SMS.EMDEN’. Those on board the Sydney at the time of the engagement received a medal, as did Cocos Islands staff, the Admiralty and several museums.
With a tiny number available to collectors, the rare Sydney-Emden Medal is seldom seen on the market.

Used by the men who sailed aboard the notorious, deadly WWI German raider, these SMS Emden Canteen Tokens are unquestionably rare – particularly the high denomination 100 & 200 Pfennig.
Genuine artefacts of – and, indeed, quite possibly witnesses to – Australia’s first major victory at sea, these tokens are believed to have been retrieved from the Emden after destroyed by HMAS Sydney in 1914. Never before offered by Downies as a set!

An important piece of Australian history, we are delighted to present the complete WWII Internment Camp Token Set – in better-than-usually-seen quality!
Struck by Luke & Co and Arendeen & Sons, these tokens were used by inmates at Australian internment camps during WWII, due to a fear that access to actual Australian currency would aid potential escapees. Issued in tiny numbers, most internment tokens were destroyed at the end of the war on the order of the Commonwealth Government, as, strictly speaking, they contravened the Commonwealth Coinage Act. A small number were inevitably kept as souvenirs by guards and inmates.
An ingenious currency issue, these rare notes were created by prisoners at the Hay Internment Camp, unbeknownst to authorities! Printed in tiny numbers, and issued in March 1941, these notes represented a blatant contravention of Australian law. Most were destroyed by August the same year. As a result, the Hay Internment Camp Sixpence is rare in any condition.
Highly sought after today, the WWII Internment Penny, Threepence and Shilling tokens are scarce, with the Two Shillings and Five Shillings undeniably rare. Due to the rarity of the higher denominations, WWII Internment Tokens are virtually never seen as a complete collection – and seldom in this superior state of preservation.
A key element of Australia’s WWII history, and a highly desirable piece of military memorabilia, this complete WWII Internment Token Set is presented in premium grade Very Fine to about Uncirculated condition.
