TAKING
DOWNTOWN TO THE
NEXT LEVEL
2013 ANNUAL REPORT AND 2014 CALENDAR
WELCOME This past year marked the beginning of many projects that will forever change the face of our central city and take Downtown Atlanta to the next A.J. ROBINSON CAP/ADID President level. From the Atlanta Streetcar to the National Center for Civil and Human Rights, 2013 fostered a resurgence of energy and excitement throughout the community. On behalf of our organization, I am proud to be an integral part in helping partners from both the private and public sectors bring to fruition years of work and planning. The future of Downtown is very bright and we eagerly look forward to the many accomplishments that will be realized in the coming years.

LEADERSHIP As I reflect on my last three years as Chairman of the CAP Board, I am honored to have been a part of an organization that has worked to maintain and strengthen Downtown Atlanta’s vibrancy and economic vitality for the past 72 years. We have entered into a EGBERT PERRY new era of development and CAP Chair investment in the community that promises to bring exciting changes and additions to the city’s core. As I look towards the future, I am confident that CAP’s continuing efforts will result in the creation of a 21st-century Downtown that residents, workers and visitors alike will be able to enjoy as the heart of the Atlanta region for decades to come.
The significant accomplishments of the Atlanta Downtown Improvement District have been paramount in the surge of investment and revitalization that Downtown is currently experiencing. From the Ambassador Force and Clean Team to investCRAIG JONES ments in public spaces and ADID Chair transportation alternatives such as the Atlanta Streetcar, ADID’s work will continue to impact the lives of millions of residents and visitors each year.

MARKETING AND EVENTS Forty-two restaurants participated in the 2013 Downtown Atlanta Restaurant Week (DARW), which generated $1.5 million in sales and brought more than 50,000 diners to Downtown. A new banner program utilizing a “Brought to You by CAP/ADID” seal was introduced to position CAP/ADID as the driving force behind many Downtown improvements and innovations. To keep the Downtown community engaged on issues large and small, CAP hosted two Town Hall Meetings in 2013, attracting more than 100 attendees each.
Flux Night and Elevate Atlanta art events took place in 2013. CAP was a presenting partner of Elevate, which brought 30 visual public art displays, 14 performances and events and thousands of people to Downtown. More than 1,100 of Atlanta’s top leaders attended the 2013 Annual Meeting, which focused on CAP/ ADID’s impact on Downtown Atlanta. ADID began hosting monthly Atlanta Streetcar Socials to highlight businesses affected by construction while providing an informal opportunity for discussion about the Streetcar. CAP partnered with the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition on Atlanta Streets Alive, which celebrates local neighborhoods and encourages residents to take to the streets by foot and bike. Events in May and September drew more than 15,000 and 61,000 attendees, respectively.

INFRASTRUCTURE AND TRANSPORTATION The Atlanta Streetcar construction, including 2.7 miles of track, more than 240 power poles and three traction power substation units, began last March. Twelve platforms for streetcar stops, the vehicle maintenance facility and an Atlanta Streetcar mural were also part of the progress. CAP/ADID’s Downtown Green Source program worked with a robust 2013 client base to provide alternative transportation options. More than 9.5 million vehicle miles traveled were eliminated by single occupant vehicles, more than 45,000 discounted monthly transit passes were sold and more than 10,600 Downtown commuters were registered in Georgia Commute Options incentive programs. In July CAP/ADID kicked off the Downtown Atlanta Parking Assessment project to review the state of parking in Downtown and develop solutions for managing public perception. Collaboratively with stakeholders and the Atlanta Convention & Visitors Bureau, CAP developed a plan to transform Andrew Young International Boulevard into “Downtown Atlanta’s Premier Hospitality Corridor” and implemented sidewalk repairs for the 2013 NCAA Final Four Tournament. CAP secured a $15,000 grant to repair and expand the wayside sign system along the Auburn Avenue corridor.
Seventy-two intersections were fully upgraded with new LED traffic and pedestrian signal heads, wireless communication equipment and new timing to improve traffic flow Downtown.

PUBLIC POLICY CAP worked with city leadership to draft and define a new street-vending ordinance that will allow up to 31 vendors to operate in Downtown, and the Atlanta City Council passed the ordinance in early November. CAP provided support for the fourth Annual GeorgiaForward Forum, bringing leaders to Atlanta to network and offer innovative approaches to solve our biggest policy challenges. GeorgiaForward led the authorship of the state’s first-ever Civic Health Index (CHI). To announce the publication, CAP hosted a media event in Macon and traveled across Georgia to present the report. The inaugural class of Young Gamechangers, an annual GeorgiaForward program bringing together the state’s brightest young leaders, completed work re-envisioning the future of Americus and Sumter County by identifying missed economic opportunities and presenting ideas for attracting and retaining young people, entrepreneurs and retirees. Founded by CAP Members, Partner for Hope works to connect those feeding in public with appropriate social service providers. Following the 2013 formation of a Task Force, the effort gained the attention of media outlets and was granted the support of a LEAD Atlanta Cohort Community Project team.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CAP/ADID supported the creation of Sweet Auburn Works, an organization intended to implement preservation-based economic development. CAP published its Downtown Investment Map to spotlight $577 million in public and private investment in Downtown between 2012 and 2014. ADID’s Ambassador Program, along with the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau, purchased a new mobile information cart to serve Downtown. In 2013, ADID’s Ambassador Force helped more than 900,000 visitors, workers and residents, providing 5,000 escorts to destinations within the DID, 700 vehicle-related assists and more than 100 medical assists. The Clean Team worked to beautify Downtown, removing more than 1.4 million pounds of debris and providing 24/7 cleaning services and ongoing landscaping. ADID installed a bocce ball court and table tennis area in Woodruff Park and expanded the exercise area and ATL Playground. In November, 20,000 daffodils were planted as a part of a worldwide living Holocaust Memorial. CAP supported the work of the Downtown Development Technical Advisory Committee to ensure the successful revitalization of South Downtown Atlanta in the context of planned investments in nearby large projects. With the City of Atlanta and the State Historic Preservation Office, CAP managed a federal Historic Preservation Fund grant to complete the Downtown Contemporary Historic Resources Survey to document contemporary historic resources built from 1935 to 1985.

SUSTAINABILITY CAP worked diligently to expand the Atlanta Better Buildings Challenge (ABBC) in 2013, which now boasts participating buildings citywide in Downtown, Midtown and Buckhead. CAP recognized ABBC top performers in July and received the Metro Atlanta Chamber E3 Award for its work on the initiative. In partnership with several other organizations, CAP/ADID hosted the second annual Earth Day Clean Up Challenge on April 23. More than 200 volunteers gathered at seven locations and participated in beautification projects. CAP/ADID partnered with American Textile Recycling Services (ATRS) and four Downtown properties to host a recycling drive for gently used clothing and textiles. ATRS collected a total of 2,583 pounds of clothing and textiles, which were sorted and reused or recycled. The second annual Georgia Commute Options Bike to Work Challenge took place in 2013. During the month of October, commuters all over the region tracked their bicycle commutes to work for the chance to win prizes.

MEMBERSHIP CAP launched Downtown Partners to engage small businesses, nonprofits and individuals in support of Downtown through CAP initiatives. Enrollment in the program, which offers Partners many of the benefits enjoyed by CAP Members at annual dues levels of just $250 or $500, began in June and attracted 19 new supporters in its first six months. CAP exceeded its 2013 Membership goal and attracted 29 new Members, representing a wide variety of sectors, including media, law, real estate, nonprofit, entertainment and hospitality. More than 240 companies and organizations are now taking part in the work of CAP as Members or Downtown Partners, a near 20 percent increase in the total number of supporters over the past two years. More than 140 CAP Member representatives are now involved in Membership Councils organized around four major focus areas: Economic Development, Infrastructure, Marketing & PR and Quality of Life. Each Council met at least quarterly throughout the year, affording Members the opportunity to network with peers that share a passion for Downtown and provide feedback to CAP’s staff. Since their inception in 2011, several major CAP/ADID initiatives, strategies and public policy positions have had their geneses in these meetings.
