WELCOME FROM THE MAYOR As Durham’s mayor, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the Durham Performing Arts Center as this nationally-renowned venue begins its twelfth season. My wife and I have been season ticket holders in DPAC’s Broadway series since it opened in 2008, and like DPAC’s more than 4 million guests, I continue to marvel at the caliber of performances showcased in our great city. Each year just gets better and better. For example, a record-breaking 530,000 visitors walked the red carpet last year to attend award-winning musicals, such as HAMILTON, Dear Evan Hansen, and CATS, as well as sold-out concerts including Widespread Panic, Bob Dylan, and Jill Scott. That’s not all. While providing entertainment that families can enjoy together is a top priority for DPAC, finding ways to involve those who may not otherwise enjoy all that the arts have to offer has become a special passion for this theater. Last year, DPAC implemented “DPAC for All,” a program that offers discounted tickets exclusively for Durham residents. No doubt, the arts contribute to Durham’s sense of community.Your attendance enables DPAC to support other nonprofit arts groups, such as the Durham Arts Council and the Hayti Heritage Center. DPAC also cultivates the arts in education by arranging visits from touring cast members to local schools through Heart of the Arts, and not to mention donating hundreds of tickets each year to schools and local charities to use for auctions and fundraising. DPAC is constantly working to ensure that the arts touch many areas of Durham and, indeed, the entire Triangle community. A visit to DPAC is an open invitation to experience Durham—from great awardwinning restaurants to shopping and culture. It’s as easy as parking and either walking, biking or taking the bus to downtown eateries, or taking a short drive to nearby malls, museums or historical sites. You should know that both Durham and DPAC have strong track records: The City recently celebrated 150 years of serving our growing, diverse population, while in November DPAC marked over a decade of showcasing award-winning entertainment. Thank you being a part of our history, present and future just by choosing DPAC and Durham. Now settle into your seats to enjoy your DPAC experience and an unforgettable show! Sincerely,

Mayor Steve Schewel

WELCOME FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER Welcome to DPAC! For 12 seasons now, I have had the opportunity to offer these greetings to DPAC’s guests; not only at our hit Broadway shows, but also our concert and comedy events, family shows and special events of all kinds. Since opening in 2008, almost 4.5 million people have attended the 2,000+ events DPAC has hosted. While those numbers might be impressive, what I am most proud of is our relationship with our guests. On page 14 of this program, you will find DPAC’s Guiding Principles. I invite you to review these principles and know that they factor into everything we do at DPAC. Guest experience is so very important to us at DPAC. Before, during, and after your visit, our team is hard at work to make your visit and experience truly extraordinary. Do you read our Know Before You Go emails? We send these emails to best prepare our guests for their next event at DPAC, with show time reminders, parking and traffic information, and more. Also important to the DPAC experience is our secret shopper program. This evaluation by an outside firm allows us to have an objective view of each and every stop on the DPAC customer journey, from entry to leaving DPAC after the end of the show. Finally, our guests’ feedback is instrumental in continuing to deliver DPAC’s legendary red-carpet customer service, which is why we review each and every one of the 40,000 guest surveys we receive each season. We do not always get it right, but when we miss an expectation or just make a mistake, we stop, step back and always do our best to make it right with our valued guests and customers. Thank you for your support and for being here at this very special event. With your help and feedback, DPAC will always strive to meet the highest customer service standards among live entertainment venues in America. Sincerely,

Bob Klaus General Manager

FOUNDER’S SPOTLIGHT Crunching Numbers and Building Relationships: PFM’s Norbert Mongeon By Lauren Van Hemert Norbert Mongeon is a numbers guy at heart. After graduating with a degree in finance, he began his career in public accounting. So, he never anticipated he would have much involvement, if any, in the arts. That is until The Providence Performing Arts Center (PPAC) came calling. “This was my genesis. I got bit by the art bug and appreciated the nature of theater and how it brings people together for a communal experience that hopefully can make the world a little bit of a better place.” Mongeon began working with PPAC 34 years ago. He started in a financial function and then began getting more involved in programming and talent acquisition. Four years later, a consulting opportunity materialized and PPAC President James ‘Lynn’ Singleton realized that he and Mongeon had developed a model and skill set that could be applied to other municipalities. That is how Professional Facilities Management (PFM) was born. “People didn’t have a lot of experience on how to run a performing arts center. One performing arts center rolled into another which rolled into another. Most of our contracts have been going for in excess of 20 years.” Today PFM provides management consulting, accounting, and event programming services to 13 theaters around the country, including the Durham Performing Arts Center and The Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts in Greensboro. And while Mongeon, who serves as PFM’s Vice President and Treasurer, says the company is still relatively small, it has expanded by teaming up with bigger players in the industry.

A Happy Marriage In 2004, a consultant contacted Mongeon about the possibility of building a new performing arts center in Durham. Mongeon visited the market, met with city leaders, and weighed the pros and cons. “It’s a major undertaking, you know, a new performing arts center, in an untested market, with a major competitor down the road in Raleigh. We determined that it would be good to bring in a partner that really has a significant presence in the industry and definitely can help us out.” That partner ended up being The Nederlander Organization.

36 N

“We had a relationship with Nederlander that went back even prior to the existence of PFM, investing in some of the shows that they have produced in years past. They are real power brokers in New York and even out on the road in connection with the markets that are involved in.” Mongeon adds once the decision was made to move forward, corporations like Capitol Broadcasting, Szostak Design (architect), and the community came together to find ways to make the proposed building work with the limited funds available. “There were a lot of pieces that had to come together for the building to happen. But you’d be hard-pressed to find another facility that was built as economically as that building is and is as beautiful as that building is.” Mongeon adds that when DPAC first opened in 2008, he was a bit paranoid that the community support and the building’s impact on Durham’s development would be short-lived. Fortunately, his worry was unfounded. “We’re all contributing to the economic renaissance that’s taken place in this community. We thought at first, ‘Okay, well we, maybe we have a three-year honeymoon period here.’ But no, it wasn’t a honeymoon, it was just a fantastic marriage.”

The Golden Age of Broadway Mongeon says that after 34 years of working in the industry, he believes this is the golden age of Broadway. “I have never seen as much of a proliferation of shows going into New York, having successful runs with solid audiences, and then going out on the road. And the quality of what goes out on the road equals New York.” Of course, the challenge for DPAC is keeping up with programming amidst an everchanging industry. “You know, we never thought three years ago that comedy and podcasts and YouTubers would be as big as they are now. We find ourselves as programmers now having to educate ourselves on how the industry is changing so dramatically.” But Mongeon says DPAC is positioned to continue its dominance in this area. In fact, he calls DPAC the star in PFM’s camp. “I credit DPAC’s success to the great economic machine that is North Carolina. North Carolina has been on a roll in that Raleigh-Durham area has so many great educational institutions and just a great population to support the arts.” “But I cannot give enough credit to the local staff and Bob Klaus for what they’ve accomplished down there. You can put a building up, but if you don’t have the right people to run it and to take ownership of it, it just won’t work.”

TRIANGLE RISING STARS CELEBRATING THE BEST OF HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL THEATRE IN OUR REGION

DPAC is proud to present the 10th anniversary of Triangle Rising Stars, the regional qualifying event for The National High School Musical Theatre Awards™ (NHSMTA). NHSMTA is a national competition that celebrates outstanding student performances in high school musical productions across the United States.Triangle Rising Stars brings together high school musical theatre students from Durham, the Triangle and the surrounding region to perform and compete for a chance to represent DPAC in the national finals in New York City each summer. A team of judges from DPAC, Duke University, ABC 11, Carolina Theatre and other arts and performance professionals attend area high school musical productions throughout the school year. Twenty finalists are then selected to rehearse and compete with the best of their peers, culminating in a live performance at the Triangle Rising Stars Showcase and Awards show at DPAC each May. This year, seven awards will be presented during the live ceremony: Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Dancer, Best Singer, Best Ensemble, Triangle Shining Star (congeniality award), and The Marchael Bayne Award for Best Musical. The students awarded Best Actress and Best Actor each receive $2,000 academic scholarships and are invited on an all-expenses-paid trip to the NHSMTA program in New York City in June at Nederlander’s Minskoff Theatre, home for Disney’s The Lion King.

42

About NHSMTA – The National High School Musical Theatre Awards™ (NHSMTA) was established in 2009 to elevate the importance of theatre arts education in schools and reward excellence in student performance. The program impacts over 50,000 students annually who participate in high school musical theatre competitions sponsored by thirty professional theatres throughout the US. Also known as The Jimmy® Awards, named for Broadway impresario James M. Nederlander, this yearround program is administered by The Broadway League Foundation Inc.

Please visit DPACnc.com/TRS for more information on Triangle Rising Stars. More information on NHSMTA and The Jimmy Awards can be found at jimmyawards.com.

Special thanks to our community partners and judges for participating!

HEART OF THE ARTS Community Engagement — Sharing the Magic of Live Entertainment Since 2008, DPAC’s community outreach programs have been making connections between the shows DPAC presents and local students and non-profit arts organizations. Each season, DPAC coordinates educational workshops led by touring Broadway cast and crew members for Durham students interested in the performing arts. Students and their teachers have told us that DPAC’s educational outreach events are among their school year’s highlights. The chance to interact with Broadway theater professionals is inspiring; they provide real-world insights and offer students a oncein-a-lifetime experience. DPAC For All, a program started in 2018, reserves $20 tickets exclusively for residents of Durham. This program provides an opportunity for many to experience their first-ever Broadway musical at a savings of 25% to 75%. Residents can purchase these specially discounted tickets in-person at the Blue Cross of NC Ticket Center at DPAC. New this year, is DPAC’s Inclusion Project. This new program provides a DPAC VIP experience to deserving community members, those who serve to make a difference for others in everyday life here in the Triangle. Recipients will have the opportunity to enjoy the magic of live entertainment at DPAC, as a small reward and recognition for their service in our communities. Want to nominate someone? AVOID SCALPERS

Don’t purchase tickets from Internet scalpers! At DPAC, we’re tired of seeing unauthorized ticket brokers take advantage of DPAC ticket buyers. Don’t be fooled by online websites who mimic DPAC’s name or website and offer tickets they might not even have. You will always pay more, will rarely get the seats they advertise, and you may even receive counterfeit tickets.

Go directly to DPACnc.com or to Ticketmaster.com; type it in yourself, rather than using an online search. These are the only OFFICIAL ONLINE TICKETING PROVIDERS for events at DPAC.

If you do use a search engine, look for the official DPAC website www.DPACnc.com. Only our authentic venue site is allowed to be labeled as “official.”

“Speculative Listing” is when unofficial sellers list tickets for sale even though they do not actually have those tickets. They are betting they can trick you into buying tickets, often in seat locations you may not really want and at a price much higher than what others are paying for the same seats. For more information about speculative ticketing, visit this warning from Ticketmaster: https://insider.ticketmaster.com/spec-ticketing/

Avoid unsecured purchases from fraudulent and misleading online ticket brokers. Don’t overpay for your tickets. For the best prices and best selection, always go directly to DPACnc.com or Ticketmaster.com and BUY DIRECT!

DISCOVER BROADWAY Donate your tickets and give area students the chance to experience their first Broadway show ever!

DPAC’s Discover Broadway offers SunTrust Broadway members a way to donate their tickets so their valuable seats do not go to waste.

During the 2018 / 2019 season, DPAC saw a 60% growth in Discover Broadway donations. Thanks to the generosity of DPAC’s Season Seat Members, over 200 seats were donated to deserving individuals including students from Durham Public Schools and Partners for Youth Opportunity plus seniors living in Durham public housing. For many, these seats provided opportunities to experience their first Broadway show ever. For the 2018 / 2019 season, DPAC’s Discover Broadway will be partnering with Durham Public Schools and North Carolina Central University to reach students in the performing arts who would otherwise be unable to attend a hit Broadway show at DPAC. By generously donating tickets you cannot use, Durham students will receive the chance to experience the magic of a hit Broadway show. These donated tickets provide the opportunity of a lifetime.

It’s easy to help: • If you know in advance that you cannot attend a show, or even if one member of your party will not be joining you, simply contact DPAC at :

DiscoverBroadway@dpacnc.com

• You will receive an acknowledgment from DPAC that your unused tickets will be reprinted for donation to an area student. • You, then, discard your original tickets and DPAC will handle all other details. * Please note: ticket donations must be made at least 72 hours prior to your scheduled performance date.

THANK YOU TO DPAC’S CORPORATE PARTNERS:

DPAC AMBASSADORS In 2018, DPAC launched Performing Arts Ambassadors, a new program for high school students passionate about live entertainment and the performing arts. 20 students were selected from over 50 applicants, and each was able to see the diversity offered by DPAC and acquire a behind-the-scenes look at the events presented by one of the top-five theaters in America. These up-close experiences not only help students realize the importance of the arts, but also allows them first-hand experiences that may help them one-day choose a career path in performing arts management. And just as important, DPAC’s Performing Arts Ambassadors are able to share their insights and experiences with other teens throughout the region via social media. High school-aged students are encouraged to apply each summer for the upcoming season. Ambassadors volunteer in a variety of roles at events, shadow key staff members, attend DPAC events, and report about their experiences via a blog and other social media channels throughout the school year.
