WELCOME FROM OUR SPONSOR
SunTrust is proud to sponsor what may be the most stellar season yet of SunTrust Broadway at DPAC! Whether this is your first SunTrust Broadway visit, or you’re a long-time season seat member, we’re delighted to welcome you to this exciting performance. SunTrust understands that that the arts are essential to the quality of life in the communities we serve. The performing arts in particular have the power to inspire, entertain, inform, thrill and unite us in a communal experience. We value our ongoing partnership with DPAC, which has proven to be an extraordinary artistic and economic force in our region, forever setting a high bar on quality that it meets and exceeds season after season. Helping people gain personal confidence about their finances is SunTrust’s passion and our purpose. Did you know that 75% of Americans report that their finances are their primary source of stress? SunTrust recognized that this is a silent epidemic that had to be addressed. In 2016, we launched the onUp Movement to offer everyone – SunTrust clients or otherwise – a way to take the first steps toward financial confidence. Escaping financial stress frees you to enjoy what is most important. We encourage you to join the Movement at onUp.com, where you’ll find tips, resources and challenge games to launch your journey to a life well-spent. But for tonight, sit back, and enjoy the show!

WELCOME FROM THE MAYOR The traditional tenth anniversary gift is aluminum or tin, but that just does not seem fitting to celebrate a place that has delivered nothing but platinum for Durham for the last decade. As Durham’s mayor, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the Durham Performing Arts Center. My wife and I have been season ticket holders in DPAC’s Broadway series since it opened in 2008, and like DPAC’s more than 4 million guests, I continue to marvel at the caliber of performances showcased in our great city. Each year just gets better and better. For example, more than 480,000 visitors walked the red carpet last year to attend award-winning musicals, such as Les Misérables, The Color Purple, and sold-out concerts including David Byrne, Anita Baker and Jerry Seinfeld. That’s not all. While providing entertainment that families can enjoy together is a top priority for DPAC, finding ways to involve those who may not otherwise enjoy all that the arts have to offer has become a special passion for this theater. Last year, DPAC hosted North Carolina’s first-ever “sensory-friendly” theatrical performances for children with autism. No doubt, the arts contribute to Durham’s sense of community.Your attendance enables DPAC to support other nonprofit arts groups, such as the Durham Arts Council and the Hayti Heritage Center. DPAC also cultivates the arts in education by arranging visits from touring cast members to local schools through Heart of the Arts, and not to mention donating hundreds of tickets each year to schools and local charities to use for auctions and fundraising. DPAC is constantly working to ensure that the arts touch many areas of Durham and, indeed, the entire Triangle community. A visit to DPAC is an open invitation to experience Durham—from great awardwinning restaurants to shopping and culture. It’s as easy as parking and either walking, biking or taking the bus to downtown eateries, or taking a short drive to nearby malls, museums or historical sites. If you stay the night, downtown hotels are here to welcome you with open arms. Milestone anniversaries are often the result of great partnerships, and DPAC is no different. Since the very beginning, the facility’s manager Nederlander/PFM has been responsible for bringing Tony®-winning Broadway shows to Durham, making DPAC a source of local, regional and national pride. If the first ten years indicate what’s to come, then buckle your seatbelts! Thank you for choosing DPAC and Durham. Now settle into your seats to enjoy your DPAC experience and an unforgettable show! Sincerely,
Mayor Steve Schewel

WELCOME FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER Welcome to DPAC! On behalf of our entire team, it is a privilege to have you here. We understand that you have many options on where and how to spend your leisure time, and we’re honored that you chose DPAC. We have over 500 employees and volunteers, all of whom play important roles in making your live entertainment experience at DPAC the very best that it can be. From the backstage crew to the box office; from the ushers who greet you at our doors to the food and beverage staff; from our marketing and sales departments to the skilled people who schedule the events that appear at DPAC, and everyone else behind the scenes – we’re all committed to one goal, and that is to be your favorite place for live events. Since opening in 2008, we’ve hosted over 4 million guests, and we love hearing from (and learning from) them. Whether you respond to one of our guest surveys, or email me directly via the address below, your feedback is a key element which has helped DPAC remain among America’s top-five ranked theaters every year. We don’t just read your comments, we find ways to improve our venue with your ideas and feedback. In ten years, we’ve found that’s how to build a great reputation and a loyal audience. I hope that this event creates a lasting memory, maybe changes you in some small way, and leaves you smiling as you make your way home after the show. We like to call DPAC the center for live entertainment, and this is especially true when you are here with us. Enjoy the show, and thank you for coming to DPAC. Sincerely, Bob Klaus, General Manager DPAC bklaus@dpacnc.com

FOUNDER’S SPOTLIGHT A Decade of Service
You probably don’t need to be reminded that DPAC has developed a reputation for outstanding customer service, seeing as how you likely just experienced it as you found your way to your seat. Since the theater opened its doors nearly 10 years ago, the commitment to ensuring that guests are welcomed warmly and assisted in any way possible is one reason the theater is consistently one of the most visited in the nation. In fact, General Manager Bob Klaus says it might be the reason. “I say it all the time: DPAC’s Event Staff are the secret ingredient that has helped us to be ranked as one of the top five theaters in America every year,” Klaus says. “Sure, we have great shows. But lots of places have great shows. What makes the DPAC guest experience so exceptional are the staff here that greet guests, check tickets, help guests to their seats and handle innumerable questions and special requests. It may be a big blockbuster show that gets someone to DPAC for the first time, but it’s our legendary red carpet customer service that brings guests back again and again. I cannot thank the Event Staff Team enough, their warm and friendly greetings and natural interest and ability to be helpful is the heart of DPAC’s success.” Michael Louthan, Director of Audience and Event Services, says small acts of service wind up leaving a big impression. “Whether it’s helping guests find the easiest way to their seat, finding earplugs or a cough drop to make the show a bit more enjoyable, or remembering a birthday or anniversary, our staff is always finding ways to go the extra mile to ensure that every visit is a memorable event.” DPAC now employs 21 full-time and more than 300 part-time employees.

Of those, nine have been here since the very beginning, since B.B. King performed on opening night, Nov. 30, 2008. We invite you to meet them below and find out what they love most about working here! Name: Becky Klein Job Title: Event Supervisor Favorite part of the job: “It has never felt like a job. I get to work with an amazing group of people, and I love interacting with the guests, as well as experiencing the positive energy that fills the entire DPAC atmosphere night after night.” Memorable moment: “Being able to work the final show of Wicked when the lead role was played by Laurel Harris, a Triangle native. In addition to being the final show of the run, it was also Laurel’s final performance on the tour. I was working near the stage, and I was able to witness the emotion that was displayed not only by the actors on stage, but by the audience as well. It was really moving to see that kind of connection.” Name: Tawan Alexander Job Title: Event Supervisor Favorite part of the job: “My job is to oversee the ushers. Any problems they have, they will approach me first, and I also help with seating people. I enjoy interacting with people. I’m a musician, and I like seeing other people enjoying entertainment. I’ve had guests tell me that they’ve been to Broadway and other places, and we have the best customer service skills of any place in the world.” Memorable moment: “The first season when The Lion King came here, we had an event to preview the upcoming season. Three of the Broadway cast members came down and they needed some back-up singers. I guess it was on my resume that singing was one of my hobbies. I got asked to accompany them on stage and had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to sing with the original members of the Broadway cast up on stage.” Name: Angela Andrews Job Title: Event Supervisor Favorite part of the job: “DPAC is one of the best part-time jobs you can have. I like the flexibility of making my own schedule. I like the opportunity to provide customer service to the guests. I love the management team, the event staff. I love everything about the job.” Memorable moment: “I don’t have just one memory that stands out. Really what I like is being able to solve problems for our guests, even if it as simple as finding a lost item or giving information about an upcoming show. It just feels good to take care of our guests and make sure they have the best experience possible.” Name: Sedrick McCallum Job Title: Showstopper (DPAC’s name for those dapper doormen) Favorite part of the job: “I love greeting people as they come through the door. When people come in, they come ready with a smile. And I enjoy sharing my smile with my guests.” Memorable moment: “The Lion King. I enjoyed the production it presented to guests, and the costumes were beautiful.”
40-R
Name: Debi Cheek Job Title: Hospitality Coordinator for the Johnson Lexus President’s Club Favorite part of the job: “I’d have to say the relationships and friendships you build with your guests, and the excitement of each show and the top class venue you get to work in.” Memorable moment: “Probably the most memorable moments for me would have to be seeing the wonderful Robin Williams and Joan Rivers. And the Broadway shows that bring back your childhood memories. For me, that’s Mary Poppins. When I was young, my dad took us to The Varsity Theatre every day that it played. We never missed a show! But wait and see. Here’s to Hamilton, and here’s to 10 more years!” Name: Barbara Berro Job Title: Event Supervisor Favorite part of the job: “I love watching the patrons as they watch the shows, from those captivated by a Broadway show, transported back in time at a concert, or enjoying a comedy show. It has also been such a pleasure to watch the transformation of Durham in the last decade. DPAC helped make that happen.” Memorable moment: “The most memorable show for me was Robin Williams. We are not really supposed to show our reactions to what is on the stage, but I have never laughed so hard in my life. What a treat to have seen him in person. But the memories that will always stick with me will be of my co-workers who go out of their way night after night to make DPAC a truly exceptional place to enjoy a show.” Name: Lonnie Barfield Job Title: Overnight Security Manager Favorite part of the job: “I like the flexible hours and meeting celebrities and entertainers that I would not ordinarily meet.” Memorable moment: “[Comedian] Ricky Smiley grabbed me and took a picture and announced that I was his dad! He said I looked similar. I still have the picture!” Name: Avis Hodges Job Title: Usher Favorite part of the job: “The excitement of the guests is contagious … and of course being able to be inside the house during amazing performances. Over the years, I’ve ushered at other venues and enjoyed all of them. But DPAC is the best.” Memorable moment: “Too many. At the Ricky Martin concert, he had a ‘57 Chevy on the stage for a portion of the concert and stood on the hood while performing. I loved it even though my hearing was probably damaged, as my post was near his huge speakers and it was the loudest concert ever!” Name: Loretta Barrett Job Title: Guest Services Favorite part of the job: “Assisting our guests and making them feel welcomed. Our guests come to enjoy the performances. We want them to feel welcomed and relaxed while being entertained and getting a glimpse into maybe one of the most memorable moments of their life.” Memorable moment: “I attended DPAC as a guest to see The Color Purple. I felt and experienced the same courtesy and dedication from the DPAC staff that we put into our jobs to make our guests feel warm and welcomed at every show. Amazing!”

DISCOVER BROADWAY Can’t use one or more of your season tickets for the next show? Donate your tickets and give an area youth or senior the chance to experience their first Broadway show ever! DPAC’s Discover Broadway and Golden Ticket programs offer SunTrust Broadway members a way to donate their tickets so their valuable seats do not go to waste. During the 2017 / 2018 season, over 150 tickets were donated to these programs and distributed to Durham Public Schools, Partners for Youth Opportunity and Durham seniors living in public housing. For many, these seats provided opportunities for youth and seniors to experience their first Broadway show ever. For the 2018 / 2019 season, DPAC’s Discover Broadway program will be partnering with Durham Public Schools to reach students in the performing arts who would otherwise be unable to afford to attend our events. DPAC’s Golden Ticket program benefits seniors living at the J.J. Henderson Housing Center in Durham. By generously donating tickets you cannot use, Durham youth and seniors get the chance to experience the magic and music of live Broadway shows. With your generosity, these donated tickets provide the opportunity of a lifetime.
It’s easy to help: • If you know in advance that you cannot attend a show, or even if one member of your party will not be joining you, simply contact DPAC at :
DiscoverBroadway@dpacnc.com
• You will receive an acknowledgment from DPAC that your unused ticket information is being processed. • You, then, discard your original tickets and DPAC will handle all other details – we will reprint the tickets and arrange to have them distributed to deserving Durham students and seniors. * Please note: ticket donations must be made at least 72 hours prior to the performance date.

TRIANGLE RISING STARS CELEBRATING THE BEST OF HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL TALENT IN OUR REGION
DPAC is proud to present the ninth annual Triangle Rising Stars (TRS) competition sponsored by Marchael Bayne. Triangle Rising Stars is the regional qualifying event for The National High School Musical Theatre Awards™ (NHSMTA). NHSMTA is a national competition that celebrates outstanding student performances in high school musical productions across the United States.Triangle Rising Stars brings together high school musical theater students from Durham, the Triangle and the surrounding region to perform and compete for a chance to represent DPAC in the national finals in New York City each summer. A team of judges from DPAC, Duke University, ABC 11, Carolina Theatre and other arts and performance professionals attend area high school musical productions throughout the school year. Twenty finalists are then selected to rehearse and compete with the best of their peers, culminating in a live performance at the Triangle Rising Stars Showcase and Awards show at DPAC each May. This year, six awards will be presented during the live ceremony: Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Dancer, Best Ensemble, Triangle Shining Star (congeniality award), and The Marchael Bayne Award for Best Musical. The students awarded Best Actress and Best Actor each receive $2,000 academic scholarships and are invited on an all-expenses-paid trip to the NHSMTA program in New York City in June at Nederlander’s Minskoff Theatre, home for Disney’s The Lion King.

About NHSMTA – The National High School Musical Theatre Awards™ (NHSMTA) was established in 2009 to elevate the importance of theatre arts education in schools and reward excellence in student performance. The program impacts over 50,000 students annually who participate in high school musical theatre competitions sponsored by thirty professional theatres throughout the US. Also known as The Jimmy® Awards, named for Broadway impresario James M. Nederlander, this yearround program is administered by The Broadway League Foundation Inc.
Please visit DPACnc.com/TRS for more information on Triangle Rising Stars. More information on NHSMTA and The Jimmy Awards can be found at jimmyawards.com.
Special thanks to Marchael Bayne and our community partners and judges for participating!

EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH
Since 2008, DPAC’s community outreach program Heart of the Arts has been making connections between the shows DPAC presents on our stage, local students and non-profit organizations. Through Heart of the Arts, DPAC coordinates master classes led by touring Broadway cast and crew members for Durham students interested in the performing arts. Students and their teachers have told us that DPAC’s educational outreach events are among their school year’s highlights. The chance to interact with Broadway theater professionals is inspiring; they provide real-world insights and offer students a once-in-a-lifetime experience. New this year, DPAC’s Heart of the Arts team has started the Performing Arts Ambassador program. High school students passionate about the arts will be exposed to the diversity of what is offered at DPAC through this year-round program and get a behind-the-scenes look at the events at one of the top five theaters in America. These up-close experiences will not only help students realize the importance of the arts, but also allow them to share their insights and experiences with teens throughout the region via social media.

AVOID SCALPERS Don’t purchase tickets from Internet scalpers! At DPAC, we’re tired of seeing unauthorized ticket brokers take advantage of DPAC ticket buyers. Don’t be fooled by online websites who mimic DPAC’s name or website and offer tickets they might not even have. You will always pay more, will rarely get the seats they advertise, and you may even receive counterfeit tickets.
•
Go directly to DPACnc.com or to Ticketmaster.com; type it in yourself, rather than using an online search. These are the only OFFICIAL ONLINE TICKETING PROVIDERS for events at DPAC.
•
If you do use a search engine, look for the official DPAC website www.DPACnc.com. Only our authentic venue site is allowed to be labeled as “official.”
• “Speculative Listing” is when unofficial sellers list tickets for sale even
though they do not actually have those tickets. They are betting they can trick you into buying tickets, often in seat locations you may not really want and at a price much higher than what others are paying for the same seats. For more information about speculative ticketing, visit this warning from Ticketmaster: https://insider.ticketmaster.com/spec-ticketing/
Avoid unsecured purchases from fraudulent and misleading online ticket brokers. Don’t overpay for your tickets. For the best prices and best selection, always go directly to DPACnc.com or Ticketmaster.com and BUY DIRECT!
