WELCOME FROM OUR SPONSOR Whether this is your first DPAC experience or you are an ongoing subscriber to SunTrust Broadway at DPAC, it is our great pleasure to welcome you to this exciting performance! Our long-standing sponsorship of SunTrust Broadway at DPAC continues not only because we know how critical the arts are to our community and quality of life, but because DPAC has been such an extraordinary community partner; they set a consistently high bar on quality which they meet and exceed again and again. Not long ago, SunTrust identified a national epidemic: 75% of Americans, regardless of their income, reported that their finances were their primary source of stress. Helping people gain confidence about their money became SunTrust’s passion and our purpose. In early 2016, we launched the onUp Movement to help all Americans take the first steps toward financial confidence. onUp resources and onUp.com would be open to all, SunTrust clients or not. Our goal was to help five million people within the first five years. We quickly cleared the halfway mark with two and a half million joining the onUp Movement in less than two years. Freeing yourself of financial stress allows you to enjoy a life well-spent. We encourage you to join the Movement at onUp.com, where you’ll find tips, resources, and challenge games to help you start your journey. Please join SunTrust in applauding DPAC on another exceptional season, and enjoy the show!

WELCOME FROM THE MAYOR The traditional 10th anniversary gift is aluminum or tin, but that just does not seem fitting to celebrate a place that has delivered nothing but platinum for Durham for the last decade. As Durham’s newly elected mayor, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the Durham Performing Arts Center. My wife and I have been season ticket holders in DPAC’s Broadway series since it opened in 2008, and like DPAC’s more than 3 million guests, I continue to marvel at the caliber of performances showcased in our great city. Each year just gets better and better. For example, more than 450,000 visitors walked the red carpet last year to attend award-winning musicals, such as The King and I, Something Rotten, and soldout concerts including Chris Rock, Vince Gill and Tony Bennett. That’s not all. While providing entertainment that families can enjoy together is a top priority for DPAC, finding ways to involve those who may not otherwise enjoy all the arts have to offer has become a special passion. Last year, DPAC hosted North Carolina’s first-ever “sensory-friendly” theatrical performances for children with autism. No doubt, the arts contribute to Durham’s sense of community.Your attendance enables DPAC to support other nonprofit arts groups, such as the Durham Arts Council and the Hayti Heritage Center. DPAC also cultivates the arts in education by arranging visits from touring cast members to local schools through Heart of the Arts, and not to mention donating hundreds of tickets each year to schools and local charities to use for auctions and fundraising. DPAC is constantly working to ensure that the arts touch many areas of Durham and, indeed, the entire Triangle community. A visit to DPAC is an open invitation to experience Durham—from great, awardwinning restaurants to shopping and culture. It’s as easy as parking and taking the Bull City Connector free bus service to downtown eateries, or taking a short drive to nearby malls, museums or historical sites. If you stay the night, downtown hotels are here to welcome you with open arms. Milestone anniversaries are often the result of great partnerships, and DPAC is no different. Since the very beginning, the facility’s manager Nederlander/PFM has been responsible for bringing award-winning Broadway shows to Durham, making DPAC a source of local, regional and national pride. If the first 10 years indicate what’s to come, then buckle your seatbelts! You’ll want to “be in the room where it happens” in 2018. Thank you for choosing DPAC and Durham. Now, settle into our new comfy seats to enjoy your DPAC experience and an unforgettable show! Sincerely,

Mayor Steve Schewel

WELCOME FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER For ten great years now, I have had the honor of saying “Welcome to DPAC !” Who would have thought back in 2008 that a brand-new performing arts center in Durham, NC would be ranked yearly in the top five theaters in America? From humble beginnings in 2008 with just a few thousand Season Seat Members to this season with over 18,000 subscribers, it has been an exceptional journey for this great theater. I’m proud to be a part of the staff at DPAC, which numbers several hundred and includes both those you see working so hard when you come for a show and those that work equally hard behind the scenes. On behalf of everyone on Team DPAC, I send my thanks for your support. Some of you in the audience for this performance may be charter members, adventurous types that took a risk and purchased tickets even before we had hosted our first show. And others have joined us somewhere along the way. Whether this is your first visit or your hundredth, please know that every single guest at DPAC is important to us. As it is stated in DPAC’s guiding principles on page 16, “We want to be our guests’ favorite place for live entertainment”. Please know that we are always here to listen and to help since it is your feedback that helps us stay on track in delivering the best guest experiences possible. Sincerely,

Bob Klaus, General Manager DPAC

The challenges facing today’s retirees are unique. Low interest rates, sky-rocketing healthcare costs, longer life expectancies, and complex Social Security rules all make much of the conventional retirement wisdom of the past obsolete. In this new era, it’s crucial that you take a fresh look at the challenges ahead and create a comprehensive plan to address them. For nearly 25 years, we’ve been working with people like you to address the challenges of the transition from accumulating their nest egg to using it to support their retirement lifestyle. GUEST ETIQUETTE At DPAC, we’re committed to guest courtesy. Please remember to be a good neighbor to those seated around you. IT CAN WAIT. Please save texting until AFTER the show. The light from phones is distracting to others. QUIET PLEASE. Once the show starts, please let the stage be the center of attention. We ask that you turn off all phones and limit conversation. If children are attending this performance with you, please exit the seating area to the lobby immediately if they become restless or talkative. CAMERAS / RECORDING Photography and video recording is prohibited. All electronic devices (mobile phones, smart phones, tablets, digital cameras) must be turned off before entering the seating area. Cameras with detachable lenses are never allowed. ENTERING AND EXITING THE SEATING AREA Please time your exit and re-entry to the seating area to occur only at intermission for Broadway and concert events. This is a courtesy to other guests around you who will appreciate you keeping these disruptions to a minimum. IT’S SUPERSTAR ENTERTAINMENT, NOT A FOOD FEST. Small snacks and drinks are welcome in the seating area, but please eat and drink as quietly as possible. Odors and noisy wrappers can disturb others. We also ask that you finish sandwiches or other large food items before entering the seating area. KIDS AT DPAC Children must be able to sit quietly in their own seat without disturbing other guests. As a courtesy, DPAC recommends one parent or chaperone for every one child in attendance. Please exit the theater immediately if kids become restless or talkative. Above all, we hope you enjoy your experience at DPAC, and please know that we are here to help. If you have a question or need assistance of any kind, please just ask a member of our staff or contact us at dpacnc.com. We believe in great entertainment experiences, and we want to be our guests’ favorite place for live events.

OUR THEATRE FAMILY THE NEDERLANDER ORGANIZATION If you’ve ever attended a Broadway show in New York, chances are you may have been to one of DPAC’s sister theaters operated by its parent company,The Nederlander Organization. With nine of the largest venues in New York’s theater district, Nederlander theaters are host to some of Broadway’s biggest productions including blockbuster musical Hamilton playing in Nederlander’s Richard Rodgers Theatre, Disney’s The Lion King in their Minskoff Theatre, and Wicked in their Gershwin Theatre. Other shows currently playing in Nederlander Theatres in New York include Angels in America, Escape to Margaritaville,Waitress, Spongebob Squarepants the Musical and Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It all started over fifty years ago when James M. Nederlander purchased the Palace Theatre on Broadway; it was a giant and consequential step toward building the Nederlander Organization into one of the largest privately held live entertainment companies in the world today. Prior to coming to New York, James M. got his start in the business in Detroit where his family managed theaters, and produced and presented hundreds of the top shows of the day. In collaboration with his father and brothers, he and the the Nederlander family established Detroit as the most successful theatre town in America outside of New York. Under the leadership of President James L. Nederlander, the Nederlanders have built a national network of theaters including nine Broadway venues in New York: the Brooks Atkinson, Gershwin, Lunt- Fontanne, Marquis, Minskoff, Nederlander, Palace, Richard Rodgers, and Neil Simon Theatres. Outside of New York, their venues include: Bank of America Theatre, Ford Center/ Oriental, Auditorium Theatre, Cadillac Palace Theatre and The Broadway Playhouse Theatre (Chicago, IL); Durham Performing Arts Center (Durham, NC); Hollywood Pantages Theatre, The Greek Theatre (Los Angeles, CA); Broadway San Diego at the Civic and Balboa Theatres (San Diego, CA);TCC Music Hall (Tucson, AZ); North Charleston Coliseum Performing Arts Center (North Charleston, SC); Fisher Theatre (Detroit, MI); City National Grove of Anaheim (Anaheim, CA); San Jose Civic Auditorium and San Jose Center for the Performing Arts (San Jose, CA); Civic Center Musical Hall (Oklahoma City, OK); and Aldwych Theatre, Adelphi Theatre and Dominion Theatre (London, England). For nearly five decades,The Nederlanders have been prolific producers of theatrical productions with over 100 Broadway and touring productions to their credit. The company has been instrumental in presenting many of Broadway’s most honored and successful shows most notably Annie, Chicago, La Cage aux Folles, Movin’ Out, Next to Normal, Peter Pan,West Side Story and many others. Currently, the Company is involved in the Broadway Productions of On Your Feet, Hello Dolly!, School of Rock,Waitress, Cats,War Paint, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, Anastasia, Groundhog Day, A Dolls House Part 2 and A Bronx Tale The Musical. Beyond Broadway, Nederlander is acknowledged to be an innovator of the outdoor amphitheater concept as well as a presenter of thousands of concerts throughout the years. Among the

featured performers is a wide array of world-renowned artists ranging from Adele, Jimmy Buffet, Florence & The Machine, Billy Joel, Paul McCartney, Pink Floyd, the Rolling Stones, Barbra Streisand, The Police and U2 to international cultural attractions such as the Bolshoi Ballet, the Moiseyev Ballet, the D’Oyly-Carte Opera, the Georgian State Dance Company, Ballet Folklorico, and the Peking Opera, as well as national symphony concerts. The Nederlanders are industry leaders and generous supporters of arts organizations and social causes for which they have received countless honors. In 2009, the Nederlanders established The National High School Musical AwardsTM (The Jimmy® Awards) to celebrate outstanding student performances in high school musical productions across the United States. DPAC is a participant in the National High School Musical AwardsTM with its annual Triangle Rising Stars program.

PROFESSIONAL FACILITIES MANAGEMENT, INC. (PFM) PFM is a wholly-owned for-profit subsidiary of Providence Performing Arts Center (PPAC), incorporated in 1988 in response to a growing need for objective evaluation and management of small-to-medium-sized performing arts facilities in geographically-diverse locations. One of the first companies of its kind, PFM’s business is focused on what we know and do best – performing arts “product.” Our corporate mission – to bring a wide variety of programming to the broadest audience while maintaining financial responsibility and sensitivity to local constituency needs – has guided PFM to past successes and promises future growth. EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH Since 2008, DPAC’s community outreach program Heart of the Arts has been making connections between the shows we present on our stage and local non-profit arts and education groups.

One of the commitments that we are most proud of at DPAC is being a bridge between professional Broadway shows and area students. This educational outreach initiative offers master classes and workshops to Durham area schools and their theater, dance and choral departments – including opportunities for young actors and ‘techies’ to see inside a touring Broadway production. Cast members visit local classrooms and offer instruction and feedback to aspiring stars, and crew and tour management professionals make themselves available for questions and career guidance. Students and their teachers have told us that DPAC’s educational outreach events are among the highlights of their students school year. The ability to interact with young professionals in theater could not come at a more relevant time for high school students interested in pursuing a career in the field; actors who are not much older than they are can offer realistic and broad-ranging information and experiences that the students could never get elsewhere.

FOUNDER’S SPOTLIGHT Rachel and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Job

Rachel Traversari, senior director of marketing at DPAC, doesn’t hesitate when asked her favorite part of the job. In a word: “Broadway!”

“I’ve been obsessed with Broadway shows since I was a little girl. Working on shows like Disney’s The Lion King and Wicked, and seeing couples, families, school groups and others enjoy theater together, it doesn’t get much better.”

A native from New Bern, NC, Traversari fell in love with Broadway plays such as Annie, Peter Pan and Newsies. That led to voice lessons and numerous singing competitions all through high school.

Among her favorites to perform were “I Could Have Danced All Night” from My Fair Lady, “Out of My Dreams” from Oklahoma, and “The Simple Joys of Maidenhood” from Camelot.

She received degrees in marketing, music performance and a Master’s in Public Administration from N.C. State University. A job in theater seemed destined. She worked at Duke Energy Center for Broadway Series South as the media relations manager, but quickly put in her application well before DPAC opened in November 2008. “I knew it was going to be big, and I wanted to be a part of it. I was in the middle of grad school and doing projects on theater. It is all I’ve ever wanted to do. When I started, I was doing hard hat tours and talking about who we were going to be. Now, it is amazing to see what DPAC has become to the community.” August will mark her 10th year anniversary at DPAC, starting as Assistant Director of Marketing in 2008 and becoming Senior Director in 2011. Her duties encompass all facets of promoting the theater, from communicating with season ticket holders to developing branding and social media strategies. The exciting and challenging part of her job stems from the variety that DPAC offers.

“It isn’t just a line to say we have something for everyone. Every day is different. You are working on a podcast show, then a legend like Tony Bennett, then a comedian like Jerry Seinfeld, and then a hit TV show like Bring It! Live. And then the following week will be a Broadway show for a week. It never gets dull.” As someone who has been part of the team pre-Day 1, and as a theater buff, Traversari takes particular pride in DPAC’s sterling reputation in the industry. “When we go to New York and film the season special that airs on ABC 11 and producers, actors, directors know who DPAC is and are excited to bring their show here, it makes me proud. DPAC has made a name for itself in NYC!” As for her own days as a performer, Traversari is happy to let others shine on the DPAC stage, though you may catch her singing numbers from the Broadway musical Next to Normal, her favorite. She has had one center-stage moment here. “I won the staff screaming competition on stage during Halloween a few years ago. Don’t mess with a soprano.”

Traversari with the cast of Motown the Musical.

DISCOVER BROADWAY Can’t use your season tickets for the next show? Consider donating your tickets to our Discover Broadway program or our newly added Golden Ticket Donation program! DPAC’s Discover Broadway and Golden Ticket Donation programs offer SunTrust Broadway members a way to donate their tickets to Broadway shows that they cannot attend. During the 2016 / 2017 season, almost 100 tickets were donated with tickets going toward students at The Emily K Center, Partners for Youth Opportunity, Greater Durham Boys and Girls Club, and Durham Public Schools. For the 2017 / 2018 season, DPAC’s Discover Broadway program is proud to be partnering exclusively with Durham Public Schools. DPAC is excited to announce the newly added Golden Ticket Donation program! This program allows for single ticket donations, and benefits seniors living at the JJ Henderson Housing Center in Durham. By donating tickets that will not be used, member’s generosity gives local Durham public school students and senior citizens the chance to experience the magic and music of a live Broadway musical. Many of the students and seniors who receive these kind donations have never before attended an event at a professional theater, and for them, this is the opportunity of a lifetime.

It’s easy to help: • If you know in advance that you cannot attend a show, or even if one member of your party will not be joining you, simply contact DPAC at :

DiscoverBroadway@dpacnc.com

• You then discard your original tickets and DPAC will handle all other details. • We’ll reprint your tickets at DPAC and and arrange for them to be distributed to deserving Durham students and seniors. * Please note: ticket donations must be made at least 72 hours prior to the performance date.

TRIANGLE RISING STARS CELEBRATING THE BEST OF HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL THEATER IN OUR REGION

DPAC is proud to present the 8th annual Triangle Rising Stars (TRS) competition presented by Marchael Bayne. Since 2011, DPAC has hosted Triangle Rising Stars, a regional awards program which is part of The National High School Musical Theatre Awards™ (NHSMTA). Triangle Rising Stars is the regional competition that brings together high school musical theater students from Central and Eastern North Carolina to perform and compete for the chance to represent DPAC in the NHSMTA national finals in New York City each June. A team of judges from DPAC, Theatre in the Park, ABC 11, Duke University, Carolina Theatre, ShaLeigh Dance Works and other theater professionals attend area high school musical productions throughout the school year. Twenty finalists are then selected to attend rehearsals and compete with the best of their peers, culminating in the live performance at the Triangle Rising Stars showcase and awards show at DPAC each May. Four awards are given during this regional competition: Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Ensemble, and The Marchael Bayne Award for Best Musical. The Triangle Rising Stars Best Actress and Best Actor each receive $2,000 academic scholarships and are invited on an all-expenses-paid trip to the NHSMTA program held in New York City at Nederlander’s Minskoff Theatre, home of Disney’s The Lion King.

56

The National High School Musical Theatre Awards™ (NHSMTA) was established in 2009 to elevate the importance of theatre arts education in schools and reward excellence in student performance. This national competition celebrates outstanding student performances in high school musical productions across the United States. The program impacts over 50,000 students annually who participate in high school musical theatre competitions sponsored by thirty professional theatres throughout the US.Also known as The Jimmy® Awards, named for Broadway impresario James M. Nederlander, this year-round program is administered by The Broadway League Foundation Inc.

Special thanks to Marchael Bayne and our community partners!

AVOID SCALPERS Don’t cheat yourself by purchasing from Internet scalpers! At DPAC, we’re tired of seeing scalpers who are only concerned with making an excessive profit by preying upon members of our community. Don’t be fooled by scalpers online who mimic our DPAC website and offer tickets they don’t possess. You will always pay more, will rarely get the seats you want and may receive counterfeit tickets.

Go directly to the venue website – DPACnc.com or to Ticketmaster.com; type it in yourself, rather than searching. These are the only OFFICIAL TICKETING PROVIDERS for events at DPAC.

If you do use a search engine, look for the official DPAC website www.DPACnc.com. Only our authentic venue site is allowed to be labeled as “official.”

Call us at 919.680.2787, and we will be happy to tell you what a ticket to one of our shows should cost. You can also purchase directly from DPAC by phone where we our staff will assist you in finding the best seats at the best prices.

Avoid unsecured purchases from fraudulent and misleading scalpers. Don’t overpay for your tickets. Go to DPACnc.com or Ticketmaster.com and BUY DIRECT!
