LETTER FROM THE VICE PRESIDENT Philanthropist W. Clement Stone wrote that “when you discover your mission, you will feel its demand. It will fill you with enthusiasm and a burning desire.” In that spirit, it gives me great pleasure to share the Campus Life Services 2012-2013 annual report. We have been on a mission this year to support and uphold our university’s core values in all of the services and programs we offer. We have worked tirelessly to foster the academic success of our students by providing efficient, student-focused services that allow students to worry less and do more. As part of the SMC Campus Center, an interprofessional hub, we have laid the foundations of a community that encourages students to build personal and professional relationships across disciplines. It is in this kind of learning environment that we can educate and develop students to their fullest potential, so that they are thriving not only in their academic pursuits, but also in their development as health, human services, and legal professionals. In this report you will find evidence of the work we have been doing. More importantly, however, you will also meet some of the students with whom we have had the privilege of working: Kaitlyn, who worked with Campus Life Services to plan campus-wide events; Kun, who collaborated with the President’s Student Leadership Institute to begin luncheon leadership seminars, open to students of all schools; and Javod, former President of the Muslim Student and Scholar Association, a campus-wide group. Their success stories are at the heart of our success story. As always, we look forward to the year ahead supporting our students in their academic, service, and professional pursuits. MISSION Campus Life Business Services strives to enhance the daily experience of the University community by providing quality support services that meet the personal, academic, and professional needs of the students, faculty, and staff.

YEAR IN REVIEW Worked with Human Resource Services and enabled them to provide ID Cards to new employees on-site at their New Employee Orientation Programs scheduled to launch in July, 2013 Began the design and construction process of the new Seven Scholars Bookstore, opening in the SMC Campus Center in Fall 2013 One Card office successfully transitioned the SMC Campus Center food service menus and financial software from Bon Appetit to CulinArt, Inc.

The mission of the Office of Educational Support and Disability Services (ESDS) is to coordinate services that assist students with qualifying disabilities to obtain all types of reasonable accommodations through an interactive process involving the student, ESDS, and the school.

Anusha Chatterjee is an international student originally from Kolnata, West Bengal, India. She started her Ph.D. studies in the School of Social Work in 2012, with an anticipated graduation in 2017. After graduation, Anusha’s future career plans include returning back home and utilizing her degree to work in the non-profit sector in India, focusing on research and academics. “How I would describe myself has changed from what I was back home,” says Anusha. With demands of a Ph.D. course load, Anusha still finds time to work part-time at the Student Center for Global Education. Anusha has served as the secretary for the Indian Culture Association, which helps to spread awareness about Indian culture through events such as Holi, the Festival of Colors. It also helps new students adjust to the campus environment. Anusha utilizes Campus Life Services’ events such as International Services’ Conversation, Communication and Culture (C3) to meet new people and improve on her writing, time management, and planning.

MISSION The Southern Management Corporation Campus Center provides space for students, faculty, and staff to come together as one University. It is an interprofessional space that houses Campus Life Services, which includes URecFit, the Wellness Hub, and CulinArt Dining. Building operations compliments the strategic mission of the University by providing a clean, welcoming, and efficiently managed center where our event guests and University community always feel welcome and at home.

MISSION Event services is committed to providing opportunities to our students and campus community through the hosting of successful programs and meetings that further the mission of the University. We facilitate and coordinate all reservations, scheduling, event set-up, and audio visual needs in a welcoming and professional environment.

YEAR IN REVIEW Accommodated the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) National Conference, which utilized rooms in the SMC Campus Center as well as the Nursing School and the Health Sciences and Human Services Library Hosted a variety of high-profile events throughout the year, including UMB’s first University-wide Open House for prospective students and their families, the President’s Symposium with acclaimed civility scholar Dr. P.M. Forni, and the Leadership in HIV Summit, which drew attendees from around and outside of the United States

MEET KAITLYN Kaitlyn O’Donnell finished her final year in the School of Social Work in July 2013. Her concentration was in clinical social work with a specialization in health and a sub-specialization in child, adolescent, and family health. Kaitlyn who is driven, outgoing, and enthusiastic, plans on specializing in reproductive and sexual health, with a focus on alternative family planning, particularly working with LGBT families. She interned at the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC), working with OBGYN patients. To get the full experience of the interprofessional environment at UMB, Kaitlyn served as a student on the President’s Clinic, where she got to work in an interdisciplinary team of six students for three weeks on a patient care team. “You don’t just work alongside other professionals but work as a team,” Kaitlyn said of her experience. Kaitlyn was also a Maternal and Child Health Leadership Development Scholar, which is an interprofessional course with a focus on health disparities. During her time as a student, Kaitlyn also worked part-time as a Communications Fellow for Campus Life Services. With a plate full of course work, Kaitlyn still found time to organize events for Campus Life Services, such as Paint UMB Purple, which was a preSuper Bowl pep rally to promote both campus and Baltimore City spirit. With about 300 students in attendance, it gave students the opportunity to mingle before the spring 2013 semester began.

The mission of UMB Housing is to complement and support the academic experience of the diverse community of scholars who are members of our professional schools and interdisciplinary graduate school by providing on-campus housing options that are affordable, safe, and conveniently located.

MISSION Given to the University of Maryland, Baltimore, this private estate of the late industrialist F. Donaldson Brown originally was the setting for entertaining world dignitaries, including presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and Lyndon B. Johnson. The center’s primary mission is to support year-round retreats, workshops, continuing education seminars, weddings, and special events. The center supports the University of Maryland School of Dentistry, Perryville by acting as short-term boarding for pre-doctoral and hygiene students and post-graduate residents.

YEAR IN REVIEW Increased total guest attendance by 56%, with a 133% increase in wedding bookings Began working with the Office of Communications and Public Affairs to rebrand the center to the University’s new branding standards Hosted GiGi Dance Troupe, a dance troupe from Indonesia, while they were on a cultural exchange tour that visited and performed in Cecil County

Kun Yang is a third year student in the School of Pharmacy with an anticipated graduation date of May 2015. Kun has several interests and possibilities after graduation, including a fellowship in pharmacoeconomics, a residency in managed care, and consultant work in health outcomes. As a member of the President’s Student Leadership Institute (PSLI), Kun envisioned and created the career development series in conjunction with the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP) and the Office of Interprofessional Student Learning and Service Initiatives (ISLSI) to promote leadership, civility, and technical trades.

The career development series consists of luncheon seminars on leadership development and selfawareness initiatives that help students know who they are and “help them play on their strengths”, says Kun. With a passion and drive to advance the profession of pharmacy, Kun served as the 2012 community service co-chair for the Kappa Psi annual Wing-A-Thon, a campus-wide event where he helped raise over $4,000 for the Greenbaum Cancer Center. With such a full-blaze academic career, everyone needs a place to have fun, which for Kun is URecFit in the SMC Campus Center where he enjoys playing badminton.

MISSION The Office of Student Development and Leadership is committed to offering educational programs and cultural and social activities, as well as providing leadership opportunities that enable students to develop as knowledgeable and sensitive professionals.

YEAR IN REVIEW Formed the URecFit Sustainability Committee, whose members promptly identified and addressed the need for new “green” water fountains and low-flow shower heads Planned and hosted the second Annual Jingle Bell Jog, where 29 individuals, both students and staff, provided over a dozen gifts for two families in need during the weeks leading up to the race Held the first ever URecFit Kid’s Camp for the children of students and staff, which utilized the “Rad Kids” organization and coordinated with Baltimore City Police, Poison Control, the Fire Department, and other outside resources to educate 35 children on safety

MEET JAVOD Javod Kazemizadeh Gol just graduated from the School of Dentistry in May of 2013 and anticipates practicing as an associate dentist in Baltimore, MD, with hopes of owning his own practice in the future. With a busy academic career, Javod found time to serve in many leadership roles on campus, most recently as president of the Muslim Student and Scholar Association (MSSA), a campus-wide organization with cross functional activities that serves to bring different people together into one central location. MSSA organizes the Eid Dinner and the Annual Spring Banquette, both of which are open to the entire community. Being involved in Campus Life events has helped Javod to build leadership skills, interact with other professionals, and to build a network of contacts. One of Javod’s favorite campus events is Fall Fest, where MSSA gives out snow cones. Fall Fest has become an annual favorite that welcomes students, faculty, and staff to campus.

CAMPUS LIFE SERVICES: On a mission


YEAR IN REVIEW The One Card Office worked with Parking and Transportation Services in the programming and installation of One Card readers on the UM shuttle buses, which enable us to produce bi-weekly ridership reports. These reports are used to identify what campus groups are riding the shuttle. Educational Support and Disability Services expanded the Disability Services office to include Educational Support, the Writing Center, and the Wellness Hub. International Services collaborated with the Writing Center to launch Conversation, Communication, and Culture (C3), which explores facets of culture and language and how they impact intercultural interactions. The Office of the Registrar purchased and implemented Diplomas on Demand and is now producing diplomas in-house. Student Financial Assistance and Education authored and edited the “Student Guide to Financial Assistance at the University of Maryland, Baltimore,” which will be circulated to all incoming students beginning with the 2013-2014 academic year. The Student Counseling Center began to explore a partnership with MD Group Faculty Practice to create a reliable and affordable long term counseling source for students. SMC Campus Center Building Operations prepped for and began construction of the new Seven Scholars Bookstore on the first and ground floors of the building. Event Services hosted UMB’s first Open House for prospective students. Student Communications began a new branding and template initiative with the Office of Communications and Public Affairs, moving Campus Life Services closer to a more professional and unified look. Interprofessional Student Learning and Service Initiatives collaborated with the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP)—a School of Pharmacy student group— to offer career development series in conjunction with the President’s Student Leadership Institute. URecFit held the first ever URecFit Kid’s Camp for the children of students and staff, which utilized the “Rad Kids” organization and coordinated with Baltimore City Police, Poison Control, the Fire Department, and other outside resources to educate 35 kids on safety. Student Development and Leadership collaborated with Student Financial Assistance and Education to recruit a group of UMB students to teach James McHenry Elementary School students financial literacy concepts. The Wellness Hub upgraded lactation equipment in the SMC Campus Center lactation room to new Medela Symphony Model and personal kits. The Writing Center implemented a new online scheduling system, WCOnline, which allows students to self-schedule writing appointments and participate in online writing consultations.
