Registration is now open for events September December 2014.The full Program and Event Guide will be online and mailed to troop leaders in August to help you plan the rest of your year. Be on the lookout for big events so girls can travel and meet girls from all over Northern California. Throughout the year, new programs may be introduced. The events in the Early Fall Preview are separated by the nationally recognized Pathways. Pathways make it easy to participate in Girl Scouts. In the Early Fall Preview you will see Series, Event and Travel. Within the Event Pathway we have highlighted GSNorCal’s special program initiatives. In the Early Fall Preview you will see Growing Strong, Green by Nature, Girls Go Tech, and Outdoor Adventure. The highlights are defined below to help you navigate: • • • • • •
Growing Strong: Events focus on self- esteem, art, drama, adventure, sports, or friendships. Green By Nature: Events focus on the environment, conservation, or related activities. Girls Go Tech: Events focus on science, technology, engineering, math or related activities. Business Smarts: Events that focus on the 5 skills or related activities. Outdoor Adventure: Events that build adult and/or girl outdoor skills. Girl Scouts of Northern California offers activities council-wide from Eureka to Red Bluff, San Jose to San Francisco, Santa Rosa to Oakland, and all points in between, so that you can discover exciting opportunities to try new things, and develop new friendships in your area. Minimum and maximum attendance requirements exist for all programs. Girl Scouts of Northern California reserves the right to cancel or change any scheduled activities due to lack of enrollment, severe weather, or natural disaster.

Because we’re all unique, we may have special needs that may need to be met so that we can attend an event. Please e-mail Choices4Girls@GirlScoutsNorCal.org if you have questions, or to find out whether or not we can accommodate special needs at the event you wish to attend. For events that include food, it is the parent/guardian’s responsibility to let us know about dietary restrictions. We are usually able to accommodate many dietary needs such as gluten free, vegetarian, nut allergies, and dairy free options if we know about them in advance. In some cases, the family will be asked to provide supplemental items.
Series The Lead the Way Leadership Conference for Young Women is planned and run by high school girls just like you! Young women meet on a monthly basis to plan and put into action all aspects of the conference. Become part of the planning team and make it the best conference in history. Join one of the exciting committees including: decorations, recreation, registration, and welcoming. Truly take the lead! Meeting dates: Aug. 25, Sept. 29, Oct. 27, 2014. Jan. 12, Jan. 26, Feb. 9, 2015. Please Note: Must attend all dates and register, pay for, and attend the Lead the Way Leadership Conference.

Teens Take Over Chicks in Charge is what they call themselves! This fun group of girls from lots of different troops and service units, meet once a month to create and run exciting programs for other Girl Scouts and friends! These leaders also have a chance to weigh in on important Council decisions. Girls can make new friends and earn volunteer service hours while making decisions, running events, playing games, discussing girl issues, snacking on goodies, and winning awesome door prizes! Meetings are monthly. San Jose meets the 1st Tuesday and San Bruno meets the 3rd Thursday. Please Note: Girls must attend monthly planning meetings and run the programs they plan throughout the year.

Start your Daisy year by exploring a Journey. Our littlest Girl Scouts will meet flower that represent friends the Girl Scout Law and travel around the globe to learn about pandas, elephants and monkeys. Through fun activities and lively conversation, girls will examine what caring, responsibility, and respect looks like.

Babysitter Training
Get up close to the GS Amazing Race participants and chronicle their thrilling journey! Capture the race using your own cameras and create a documentary for the promotion of this Amazing event. Girls will learn navigation, film making and interview techniques during this exciting weekend. Fee includes group sleeping arrangements, public transportation costs and some meals. You will use your own vehicle and gas to travel about 300-500 miles during the weekend.
Ever wonder what it would be like to write a fashion magazine, be an Olympic athlete, a jet pilot or a crime solving detective? Try on different roles and gain self-confidence as you learn how to be a leader. Then take your new knowledge and skills and inspire others to try new things!
This American Red Cross babysitting class is a great way to earn cash. Get the expertise and experience needed to make YOU one of the most asked for babysitters. You will learn how to interview for a babysitting job, make responsible decisions, supervise children, and keep the kids and you safe. Learn safe play, first aid, choking and rescue breathing, and critical emergency action skills.

The Girl Scout Amazing Race (based on the CBS show) is a full weekend of physical and mental challenges. Girls are in charge of navigation and decision-making, adults will participate in some challenges. Girls will develop critical thinking skills while solving challenges. Program cost includes entrance, activity fees, group sleeping, and some meals. Teams use their own vehicles and gas, traveling 300-500 miles during the weekend. Each team must always have only 1 adult and 3-4 girls.

If you are interested in working directly with younger Girl Scouts, you will want to become a Girl Scout Program Aide (PA). Being a PA gives you an opportunity to share your expertise and knowledge of Girl Scouting with others. Adults are not required to stay for this training. Cadette, Senior, and Ambassador troops can run sales booths at the event to sell hand-made items and earn money for troop activities. Animal/Human Hybrids Wearable Art Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses. Reflect on who you are and who you want to be in the future. The Abby Sobrato Science and Sustainability Center is excited to host a program all about birds! Girls will learn about the industrious and expert nest builders whose beaks and tongues are perfectly adapted to take advantage of their favorite food, and some of the local habitats where they live. Girls will create their own bird nests, dissect albatross boluses, and learn how to protect the environment these cool creatures live in. This is a great way to help you earn the Animal Habitats badge.

It’s Better With Bugs! at Walden West The Abby Sobrato Science and Sustainability Center is excited to host a fun program where girls get to be science detectives and experience a variety of habitats including chaparral, riparian, and redwood forest. They will observe the behavior of various insects in a microenvironment, learn how ladybugs are beneficial to the environment, explore inside and out, and get to use scientific equipment as they learn and discover. Flying thousands of miles at speeds of up to 25 miles per hour and a mile high in the sky, monarch butterflies return annually to the same trees at the San Leandro Marina to hunker down for the winter. Learn about the mysterious migrations of the monarch butterfly from a butterfly expert at this amazing location.
Get ready for an evening of adventure and fun under the stars! Join NatureBridge in the Marin Headlands to bring out the hiker in you. Investigate the wonders of the night sky, refine your observation skills, tune in your senses and look out for nocturnal animals. On the trail, learn about mysterious lifestyles and adaptations. Get silly at the campfire with songs, skits, and s’mores.
Restore and preserve salmon habitat by repairing banks, removing invasive species, and planting trees. Get up close and personal with the sturdy young oak and the protective dogwood. Your work will help the salmon through the winter. Hosted by the Salmon Protection and Watershed Network.
Bugs are cool, so put your naturalist cap on and let’s go observe these interesting creatures on a hike through the marsh, magnify them under the microscope and create an insect to help remember their uniqueness. Bug Badge provided.

To middle school and beyond! The Girl Scouting universe of opportunity expands once girls reach middle and high school. They travel the world, earn awards that catapult girls into leadership positions, join networking groups with executive women all over the bay area, attend enriching conferences representing the council, and become prepared for college. Fall Festival is a weekend leader training retreat held at the Whiskeytown N.E.E.D Camp, located 12 miles west of Redding. Fall Festival will be held Saturday, Oct. 11 through Sunday, Oct. 12 with the option of arriving Friday night Oct. 10. Enjoy a weekend where you will make new friends, learn new skills and have a great time. Meals, lodging and classes are included in one low price. In addition to your classes, you will enjoy an evening of fun, games, SWAPS, campfire, and more!
Outdoors E-Z! For Volunteers and Daughters An amazing outdoor learning experience for beginner and experienced volunteers! Enjoy our mountain retreat and learn to improve your outdoor skills and programming resources. Workshops and activities provide practical skills and hands-on experience for working with girls outdoors. Enhance your troop’s outdoor experiences to boost their enjoyment of Girl Scouts! Adult participants will earn their Troop Camping Certificate.

Invest in your Older Girls! While girls are diving deep into the Journey topic you will get the opportunity to explore best practices to help them hone their leadership skills as they gear up to earn Girl Scouting’s highest awards! You will participate in a concurrent workshop covering everything from how to implement the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, positive youth development, Please Note: Please bring a sack lunch. take action projects and the Silver or Gold Award. Learn how to bring Journey Weekends to your neighborhood. These weekends include approximately 12 hours of volunteer development and fun for you! Please Note: Participants must attend the entire weekend; leaving early or arriving late disrupts the program.
