Financial assistance is available for all Girl Scout events unless otherwise noted. The Financial Aid form can be found on the financial aid page of our website, along with the Financial Aid Policies. Please complete the application and mail it with the Program Event Registration Form to the San Jose office.

1. Online registration – Go to GirlScoutsNorCal.org/Activities use the searchable calendar to find the program you are looking for by searching by the title. This is the preferred method for program event registrations. It’s faster and easier for you, less expensive for the council, and it’s green. We STRONGLY encourage everyone to use online registration. 2. Fax or mail the Program Event Registration Form, found in the back of the Program and Event Guide, or on our website, to the San Jose office. Registrations cannot be taken over the phone.

SEND REGISTRATION TO: Program Registration 1310 S Bascom Ave San Jose, CA 95128 800-447-4475 ext. 2091 Phone 408-287-8025 Fax

Payment Include 100% payment with all registrations. You may pay with a troop debit card, Visa/MasterCard/American Express/Discover credit card, check, cash, and cookie/fall sale rewards/credits. Please do not send cash through the mail. Offline payments will be processed as they arrive at the GSNorCal office in San Jose.

Cancellation & Refunds Events run rain or shine unless inclement weather would adversely affect the program. In those cases, participants will be notified of cancellation or rescheduling. If GSNorCal cancels the event for any reason, or cannot place participants in the event of their choice, GSNorCal will issue a refund for 100% of the registration fee.

Special Needs

Because we’re all unique, we may have special needs that must be met so that we can attend an event. Please e-mail Choices4Girls@ GirlScoutsNorCal.org if you have questions, or to find out whether or not we can accommodate special needs at the event you wish to attend. For events that include food, it is the parent/guardian’s responsibility to let us know about dietary restrictions. Usually we are able to accommodate many dietary needs such as gluten free, vegetarian, allergies, and dairy free if we know about them in advance. In some cases, the family will be asked to provide supplemental items.

Adult/Girl Ratios A minimum of two adults must accompany every troop to a Program and Event Guide event, unless otherwise noted in the event description. Please consult the ratios in the Council Resource Guide/Volunteer Essentials, or online at GirlScoutsNorCal.org/ CRG, for exact ratio information. Individually registered girls must be accompanied by one adult. Our primary goal is to provide programs for girls. As a result, there may not be space for additional adults above the allowable girl-adult ratio.

Questions Still have questions? Please contact us at

Choices4Girls@GirlScoutsNorCal.org.

Cancellation and refund requests must be made in writing. No refunds will be issued for registration fees of less than $10 per individual. Thirty (30) days written notice is required to receive 50% of registration fees of $10 or more per individual. There are no refunds if less than 30 days written notice is given except for medical reasons. Refunds for medical reasons will only be processed if notification is made before the event, and is followed within one week by a written refund request accompanied by a doctor’s note. No refunds will be issued for no-shows. The $15 Girl Scout membership fee is non-refundable.

Campaign For Girls Girl Scouts Sees an Extraordinary Opportunity.

We know that organizations make better decisions and yield stronger results when women and men share leadership roles. Yet with only one girl in five believing that she has what it takes to lead, we know we need to do more. Girl Scouts can change that. For 102 years, we have provided girls with more ways to learn and lead than any other organization. By incorporating three keys to leadership, we help girls discover themselves, connect with others, and take positive action in their communities.

We Need The Campaign for Girls

Through The Campaign for Girls, Girl Scouts of Northern California is committed to raising $20 million, critical resources that will expand leadership opportunities for girls, reach underserved communities, and improve our camps and program centers for the next generation of leaders.

How to Sell Cookies Everyone knows how tasty Girl Scout cookies are, but a lot of people don’t know what we learn by selling them. We’re talking about things like goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics—stuff we need to know to be successful. This year, we made a super-simple guide to help you get the most of your cookie-selling experience.

10 Steps to Cookie-Selling Success Say hello.

Talk about money.

Just say "hi." It gets everything off on the right foot.

Money is a big responsibility. Even if you get help from a volunteer, you have to make sure you have a role in handling it and managing it. And you need your customers to know how you plan to use the money you earn. So make sure they know.

Make eye contact. It can be kind of weird looking people you don’t know in the eye and talking to them. But it’s a big part of building trust and respect for others. It says, “Hey, we’re serious about what we’re doing!”

Ask if she’s a Girl Scout. You’ll be surprised at how many Girl Scouts are out there. Over 59 million women have been part of Girl Scouts. Ask what it was like for them.

Share your goal. You and your team have set goals and made decisions about what you’ll do with the money you earn. Maybe you’re going to a place you haven’t been or supporting a cause you care about. Whatever it is, let people know. They’ll be impressed.

Show off your inventory. Everyone has a favorite cookie, but there are a lot of different ones. So be prepared to tell them about all the cookies in your inventory.

Point out our new package design! The cookie boxes have a new look, telling the story of what Girl Scouts do. Show your customers the new boxes and ask what they think.

2015 Cookie Program Feb. 5-March 8 | Troop resources at: GirlScoutsNorCal.org/cookietroops

Share why you’re a Girl Scout. Everyone joins Girl Scouts for a different reason. Whether it's to make friends or accomplish big things— or both—let people know.

Find out how you did. Your cookie business is hard work. Always welcome tips on how to be better at it. And if they don't tell you, find out! After the sale, ask the customer how the sale went and what you could’ve done to make it better.

Say thanks. Saying "thank you" is easy. And it means a lot to the people buying cookies.

Good luck!

GIRL SCOUT LEADERSHIP AWARDS Teen Mentoring Awards When girls guide or teach others, they act as mentors. An exciting part of a Girl Scout’s development, teen mentoring is a win-win proposition! As teen mentors, Girl Scout Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors gain experience by sharing skills, testing knowledge, and trying out new leadership roles. For the girls being mentored, it means a chance to be with and learn from teens—some of their favorite people! Visit our website for more information at GirlScoutsNorCal.org/Pages/Events/Program_aides. The Leadership in Action (LiA) award is for Girl Scout Cadettes who would like to assist Brownies in one of their Journeys. Complete requirements for the LiA award can be found in the Brownie Leadership Journey adult guides or online.

Highest Awards Girl Scouts’ highest awards represent leadership journeys that helps you develop confidence, learn skills in organization, determination, and dedication, and take action to make a difference in the community and in the world. Help the people who need it most. Protect animals that can’t speak for themselves. Treat the environment with the respect it deserves. We know you have great ideas, ones that make a lasting difference. And that you’re more than ready to work hard to put those ideas into motion. Girl Scouting’s highest awards -- the Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards -- are your chance to make a lasting difference in your community ... and in the larger world. Visit our website for more information at GirlScoutsNorCal.org/Girls/Awards.

The Program Aide (PA) award is for Girl Scout Cadettes who would like to assist in activities or events for Daisy, Brownie, and Junior groups in their area of interest or expertise. Program Aides who bridge to Seniors may continue to assist in activities or events as trained. Information about the PA Award can be found online.

Bronze award is an adventure filled with leadership, developing confidence, and meeting new people, the Bronze Award is the highest honor a Girl Scout Junior can achieve. As you and your team move forward to complete your take action project, you’ll develop leadership skills, uncover your confidence, and discover the kind of fun that happens when you work with other Girl Scouts to make a difference in the community around you.

The Volunteer-in-Training (VIT) award is for Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors who would like to mentor a Girl Scout Daisy, Brownie, Junior, or Cadette group outside of the camp experience. The VIT goes beyond assisting in activities and events; she creates and implements her own plans taking a group of younger girls through a journey or Take Action project using her own passion and expertise. Information about the VIT Award can be found online.

Silver award when you look around while going to school, practice, or a friend’s house and wonder how you can make a change for the better. Going for the Girl Scout Silver Award – the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette can earn – gives you the chance to show that you are a leader who is organized, determined, and dedicated to improving your community and the world around you. You and your team can start your Silver Award Take Action project.

The Counselor-In-Training award is for Seniors or Ambassadors interested in mentoring younger girls in a camp setting. As girls earn this award, they build skills that can help them become camp counselors. Counselor-in-Training programs are available through our council run and community camps.

Gold award as part of a movement of ten million girls worldwide, you are in an exceptional position to take action and make the world a better place. By earning the Girl Scout Gold Award, you will be joining the ranks of generations of young women who have made a difference both locally and globally. The Gold Award represents the highest achievement in Girl Scouts and therefore is a commitment you make and complete as an individual.

Girl Scouts who have opportunities to lead, learn in a group and to learn “by doing,” using the Journeys, are more likely to develop the leadership skills they need for the future. What Works in Girl Scouting retention study (2012); Best Case Final Report (2013)

Girl Scout Volunteers

Volunteer Development

As a Girl Scout Volunteer you have made a personal investment in tomorrow’s leaders. It is through your leadership that the Girl Scout Leadership Experience comes to life. An investment in your development is an investment in the lives of countless girls’ leadership potential. Therefore, this new “Adult” section is aimed to provide you with resources and build your community of volunteer partners.

The Girl Scout program works best when it is Girl Led. The role of the girls is to steer the experience towards their interests and goals. Your role, as their partner, is to ensure that girls are having a safe, fun, and age-appropriate experience. In order to help you guide their dreams we provide extensive training, most of which is online and on demand! We offer a large variety of courses tailormade for you.

The Girl Scout Leadership Experience Girl Scouts is the premier leadership organization for girls, and incorporates the most current model of positive youth development to ensure girls are on a path to thrive. Today’s employers are looking for individuals who are resilient, self-reliant, and organized. Through the processes of Girl Led, Learning by Doing, and Cooperative Learning Girl Scouts are better prepared to lead projects, work cooperatively with teams, use processes of reflection to learn from their experiences, and solve complex challenges. To help girls thrive, the Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE) develops girls who believe they can change or grow their natural abilities and talents (Growth Mindset); understand their inner passion (Spark), and set and manage goals. To learn more about this model of youth development, please visit GirlScoutsNorCal. org/Thrive.

Girl Led and YOU The Girl Scout experience has the most impact when it is Girl Led, or designed by the girls. When girls lead, they are more engaged and you will know that you are putting time into activities in which they want to participate. Planning the year should be done in conjunction with the girls, no matter the age. Running a girl led troop is easier than you think! Here are five simple steps for planning using the girl led process:

Leadership Journeys and the Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting.

Journeys provide girls a model for: in depth exploration about a particular topic, discovering their values, connecting to the community, and then honing their goal management skills as they take action.

The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting includes both skill builder and legacy badges, which gives girls the opportunity to try new things and discover their spark. Each Journey is associated with a set of skill builder badges.

Help girls identify their goal(s) for the year. Do they want to do a Journey? Earn a particular badge? Sell 5,000 boxes of cookies? Go camping? Go on an extended trip?

Determine if the goal is meaningful and realistic for your troop. For example, completing three Journeys and the Silver Award in a year is a bit much. Help the girls spread out their plans over their three year Cadette experience, or pare down their ideas so that they can focus and get the most out of the things they do!

These two pieces give girls the opportunity to seek new challenges and grow their abilities and develop their growth mindset. Building this foundation will help girls prepare to take on the more rigorous challenge of a Take Action project while earning their Bronze, Silver, or Gold Awards. Whether girls are Daisies or Ambassadors they will learn they have the power to make a difference in the world! Journeys provide three different lenses for girls to have fun and grow their leadership skills: It’s Your World—Change it (advocacy), It’s Your Planet—Love It (environment), and It’s Your Story—Tell it (self-expression).

Design the path to the goal with the girls. How frequently will you meet? Do they want to attend events? If so, which events will help achieve the goal? Are there other trips, materials, or resources needed to help reach this goal? What are their goals for the fall sale and cookie sale to help finance this path?

Advocacy, Environment Or Self Expression?

Evaluate the plan with the girls and adults. Can they do it within budget? Does it present a new challenge for the girls? Does the troop have enough time to accomplish the goals?

Begin putting the girl’s plan into place. Have regular check-ins with the girls about where they are in the plan. Should they shift gears and try to reach the end goal a different way? Are they on a successful path? How can the troop adjust the path?

Planning Your Troop Meetings

Building Community

Once you have your year planned out, it’s time to start planning individual meetings. Your typical meeting will consist of six different components listed below to help guide you through your planning.

Each area within GSNorCal’s 19 counties belongs to a Service Unit. Most Service Units hold meetings for troop leaders in their area on a regular basis. These meetings offer troop leaders a great place to network with other troop leaders, and learn about what’s new in Girl Scouting and fun opportunities for your girls! To find out information about your local service unit, please visit GirlScoutsNorCal.org/Volunteers/Service-units. Use the council website to stay fresh on all things GSNorCal and follow us on social media for up-to-the-minute additions and special announcements!

Where can I find…

Pre-Meeting: As girls arrive, they join in an activity that they can do independently. As they get older you may find you want this portion less structured so the girls can visit. Opening: This is the official start of meeting. Brings the group together as a whole to introduce the meeting plan. Business: This is an announcement on how the troop is reaching their goals. It can also include a treasurer’s report, decision-making and voting led by the girls! Activity: This can be a session from a journey, a step from a badge, or an activity unique to your girls’ interests. What are girls discovering today and how are they connecting to each other to Take Action in their community? Cleanup: Girls are assigned a task to help at the end. Have the girls create a chore (kaper) chart to refer to at each meeting.

Closing: Official end of the meeting. This can be a simple ceremony (friendship circle).
