DELTA PHI UPSILON HONORS THE LEGACY OF DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.
Houston, TX – 1/12/2011 – As part of its National Program Thrust, Delta Ph Upsilon Fraternity, Incorporated and its chapters and colonies throughout the United States will join in the 17th annual National Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, on Monday, January 17, 2011. On behalf of the fraternity, National President Larrel A. Green issued a call to service to all those interested in furthering the dream of Dr. King and serving their communities. In the words of Dr. King, “Everyone can be great, because everyone can serve.” The Martin Luther King Day of Service is a great day for Deltas to continue to realize their ‘greatness,’ and give back to their communities. Over the course of his life, Dr. King challenged and mobilized our nation toward his dream of a “Beloved Community,” a truly interracial democracy that afforded everyone the opportunity to achieve the American dream. More than forty years after his death, our country and the world still confronts many of the same problems Dr. King faced in his time -- poverty, hunger, illiteracy, discrimination and violence. It is the goal of Delta Phi Upsilon to use the King Day of Service to engage its members and volunteers in addressing these challenges, both on the holiday and as part of an ongoing commitment throughout the year through its national program which includes initiatives in Health Awareness, Education, Political Empowerment, History & Heritage and Global Awareness. Delta Phi Upsilon Fraternity, Incorporated (DPhiU) is a national service organization that was founded on the campus of Florida State University in Tallahassee, FL in 1985. It is the oldest Greek-lettered organization established by gay men of color. It is comprised of 300+ members in city chapters in five regions across the United States. Its membership includes gay men who exemplify its motto of “Service to our Kind,” through academic excellence, certified leadership skills, and who are consistently involved in creating change in the global community through the programs of service embodied in the fraternity’s national program goals. Through its core mission, Delta Phi Upsilon has dedicated itself to improving the quality of life for its members and those it serves. The organization is led by its 5th National President Larrel A. Green of Houston, TX, whose administration's programmatic theme is “The H.E.A.R.T of Delta Phi Upsilon.” For more information about Delta Phi Upsilon Fraternity, Inc., log on to www.dphiu.org.
