Special Programs

Caring for 1,800 acres of parkland and producing over 10 special events each year is a big job! Making it all happen takes a village…or a community, to be exact. With the help of our committed community volunteers, DPR is able to keep our parks and community spaces better maintained, and make sure our events are fun, clean, and safe. Simply put, we rely on our community volunteers to help make programs and projects possible! We could never express our gratitude or appreciation enough for each and every volunteer’s contribution and all they do to support DPR’s mission and connect our community to wellness, the outdoors, and lifelong learning!

We’re shining the spotlight on just a few of the hundreds of volunteers who help us out every year and aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty to make sure our community, park visitors, and customers enjoy DPR events and have clean, beautiful, and spruced-up spaces to gather and recreate. Last year, 16 Duke University students volunteered to clean up Burton Park with us as part of Duke University’s Project BUILD. This program encourages incoming freshmen to participate in civic engagement activities to build community with each other and with Durham.

Duke University - Project Play

Duke University's Project Play program finds ways for incoming students to explore wellness, teamwork, and athletics through engaging experiences. Last fall, 100 students from the program volunteered with DPR, sprucing up Duke Park and assisting our landscaping team.
