This article has been prepared by: Dr. George Samakovitis, Associate Dean Department of Informatics, New York College & Dr. Dimitris Andreou, General Manager, New York College
A new Perspective Trends in higher education and continuous professional development have historically been diverse in nature and scope and serve different needs. Such needs are most often influenced, if not entirely prescribed, by respective demands in the employment market, and in geopolitical and business trends, in each era. The rise
Business Leaders of the Future Need of the Internet era, coupled with the overwhelming expansion of globalization in the market for labour and ideas and the reliance of advanced economies on the "knowledge worker" has set - slowly but steadily - the new pace in the global business education arena. On the other hand, and in light of these developments, the contemporary knowledge worker places a high value on personal time, while viewing, at the same time, education as the most significant key to future prosperity and career goals. Leaders in global education have heard the message. This has been unequivocally demonstrated by a strategic shift of an increasing number of Universities towards harnessing the powers of the Internet as a location-independent medium to attend to the new global market needs for high quality curricula, which are, however, flexible in delivery and adjustable to the national, local and even personal needs of the student. Seen from another angle, this marks a need for personalized professional training and the transformation of global best practice to local expertise. Universities, as the traditional education experts, have historically had to fight against their long-established resident organisational cultures to finally comprehend that 'going online' was neither a threat to the established academic profession, nor a simple but miraculous translation of lecture notes to HTML. Among them, many failed to embrace the concept, while others understood the necessity to redesign all administrative, technical, and pastoral elements to accommodate a model for successful and efficient use of the Internet in the education process. As educational research has indicated, time and time again, the provision of high quality content, the use of state-of -the-art equipment and the application of real-time videoconferencing is less than crucial to an online programme's success. It is rather the
10
blending of educational resources, the dramaturgical element of the lecture, the motivation for participation and the effective involvement of group work that makes the difference. Most important, the localization of both content and the educational process and the adaptation of programmes to individual learning styles have proved a key feature of successful providers of online learning.
A Best Practice Case In a new program sponsored by New York College (NYC) in Greece and National American University (NAU) in the U.S., Greek and multinational professionals residing in Greece are being introduced to a proven concept in modern global and regional practical learning for future leaders, the Best of Both Words (BOBW) Flexible MBA. The Flexible MBA is designed to provide career professionals with the tools to be successful in the global and regional marketplace. Under NYC's and NAU's Best of Both Worlds (BOBW) programs, future business leaders earn an American MBA designed to be career relevant. In this unique joint MBA program, NYC and NAU combine in every course a global perspective from the U.S. with regional relevance from Greece and Europe. The Best of Both Worlds instruction model emphasizes international team teaching where each BOBW class is taught by a team made-up of the lead instructor from NAU and a facilitator instructor from NYC. Classroom sessions are led by local coaches who are enhancing the learning experience by regionally relevant material, and assist the students in applying the concepts to relevant real world situations.
B U S I N E S S
...Business Education for the Future The basic components of good instruction in the BOBW model are no surprise: • Make students feel cared for (continuous contact) • Make students comfortable to communicate with you when they have trouble • Encourage student progress, provide ongoing Q&A support • Prompt notification of any anticipated work disruptions • Log on to monitor student activity six days per week • Return graded assignments within 48 hours • Respond to student questions in discussion forum or via email within 24 hours during the week and 48 hours on weekends The electronic platform provides each student with the tools to access and review all course relevant content, submit assignments and interact with peers, facilitators and professors. Review Content
Requires review of online electronic instruction materials. Student learns concepts and their use.
Submit Assignments
Student applies learning to analyze problems and prepare assignments.
Discussion / Q&A
Student engages in discussion with instructor and peers.
B U S I N E S S
The online learning experience is also supported with modern web conferencing tools made available in a transparent and easy to use way as well as a comprehensive set of electronic libraries and ebooks that expand tremendously the learning resources for each participant. The program is offered under two modes of delivery. The first is a Blended MBA Model that includes both on campus tutoring as well as a self learning component using the electronic platform and all other e-tools (e-library, e-books, e-forums, e-postings, etc) provided by NAU and NYC. The second mode is a Working Adult MBA Model which also includes an on campus component limited only to one Saturday preparatory session for each course, approximately once every 1.5-2 months. The other part is based on a self learning distance mode with the availability of local support through a regional support center. This model is intended for busy professionals with a minimum of 3-5 years of relevant working experience offering them the opportunity to be successful at work, advancing their managerial skills in a modern world, while maintaining a high quality of personal life. Tomorrow's business leaders, as effective knowledge workers, fully appreciate the necessity not only for continuously acquiring new day-to-day managerial skills, but also for becoming experts most often in multiple fields, to gain the holistic perspective and vision that their profession requires. It is an area marked by agility, where flexible learning takes precedence as the key competitive tool the Flexible MBA is an exact match to this increasingly visible trend in the international business environment.

Can a civil servant work for the private sector? 12
B U S I N E S S
NYC WORLD NEWS - THE MAGAZINE OF THE NYC GROUP
Dr. Dionisis Mentzeniotis, Academic Dean NYC, Rector UNYT.
A
ccording to the Governments of the countries where we operate our institutions, one of the defining features of a University is its research orientation. This view echoes the opinions of Wilhelm von Humboldt, a senior civil servant in the Prussian Ministry of the Interior, in 1809-1810. Arguably, the Humboldtian University exercised the greatest influence in Europe. For Wilhelm von Humboldt, a modern university rested on four pillars: (1) the integration of teaching and research, including the obligation to foster the creation of knowledge as well as its preservation and transmission; (2) the complementary principles of Lehrfreiheit (freedom to teach) and Lernfreiheit (freedom to study); (3) the demand for Einsamkeit (solitude) and Freiheit (freedom) in the autonomous pursuit of truth; and (4) the introduction of the seminar system as the backbone of a community of teachers and students ('Gemeinschaft der Lehrenden und Lernenden'). One can easily notice, from the very formulation of these characteristics, the reference to unity, or, at least, to interrelations, as well as to research. However, one should equally notice that nowadays Higher Education becomes sans frontiers in the sense that "without limits" means that it loses its inner structure. The unity of the Humboldtian University has been broken at multiple levels. The unity between university and research has been broken since universities have lost the monopoly on scientific research long ago. Highly performing research is practiced by institutes and laboratories belonging to firms and companies, which, on top of that, organize and offer courses in various fields. In light of the multiplication of higher education providers (new types of universities: "virtual", "open", etc., as well as businesses that deliver their own higher education qualifications) and against the background of the so called
B U S I N E S S
"knowledge society", of the new organization of science and of the unprecedented primacy of information, we may raise the question: What do we do in universities? The most general answer to this question could be the "creation of creators" (to reprise Henry Bergson's "The Creative Evolution"), the creation of theory-builders and problem-solvers and the enhancement of the cultural resources of democracy, justice, and tolerance. All these imply that the rule of the high volume (characteristic of the massive university) should be replaced by the rule of high value. This, inter alias, means training for increasing knowledge, which, in turn, brings out the research dimension of an academic institution. NY Educational Group's (NYEG) vision is to become the best private University in Europe and thus it has already made the strategic decision to focus on the challenges of developing a program of research. Developing a program of research is not an easy task. Several challenges exist including creating the research environment, cultivating the researchers, selecting the focus of inquiry and most importantly having a strong commitment to research. One of the strongest features of NYEG is its fine faculty; however, many of our faculty members seem not to have the time or the knowledge and skills to competently engage in an extensive research program of their own or to guide and inspire students to pursue a research project. We realize that a commitment to research programs is more than just informing faculty and students about research opportunities, about grant writing opportunities, and about professional organizations. Merely imparting information is not creating a research environment. The ability to engage in research and to be a productive researcher requires uninterrupted time, peer collaboration and consultation, time for review and evaluation and an organization climate that promotes scholarship. In order to ensure a research environment as well as a research faculty, NYEG has decided to work towards developing an infrastructure and funding mechanisms to support research. In addition to these efforts, NYEG depends on the feedback it receives from its (local) faculties in its efforts towards establishing this environment. In short, Humboldt the civil servant may very well become the CEO of a private company.

Bill Cohn
UNYP Professor Bill Cohn's work regarding various topics in international law was recently published in numerous local publications such as the Prague Post and The New Presence: The Prague Journal of Central European Affairs. Cohn teaches Reason and Argument/Critical Thinking; Media, Law and Ethics; Business Ethics; Legal Environment of Business; and, the MBA course "Legal and Ethical Decision Making". Cohn's recent articles dealing with international justice are directly tied in with the classes that he teaches at UNYP. Cohn's article "Supreme Mistake" published in the October 24th - 30th issue of the Prague Post concerns a recent decision of the U.S. Supreme Court involving the rights of those alleging a violation of their rights as a result of the U.S.-led global war on terror. The article examines the case of Khaled El-Masri, a German citizen who was abducted in Macedonia and then taken to a secret prison in Afghanistan. According to Cohn, the situation of El-Masri is an example of the denial of due process, which is an important principle of constitutional law which is included in his Legal Environment of Business class at UNYP. Cohn is also a regular contributing writer for
the quarterly scholarly journal, The New Presence: The Prague Journal of Central European Affairs, having written feature pieces in the past six issues, including two cover stories. Cohn's article, "Yahoo's China Defense" was published in the autumn 2007 issue of the journal. The article examines the case of the IT giant Yahoo and how it is aiding China to filter democracy. The article is again directly related to Cohn's classes that he teaches at UNYP regarding business conduct and ethical issues. The debate concerning the role of Western technology companies in China is explored as their role poses an excellent contemporary example of an ethical dilemma a situation which presents conflicting value confronting business: do they help promote democracy by providing China's more than 1.3 billion people access to more information? Or do they hinder democracy by profiting and cooperating in censorship, thus lending legitimacy to a repressive regime? Cohn feels that it is important to be actively involved in topics that he teaches and to be able to apply them to current events. He feels that he must be actively curious and engaged in what he teaches if he want his students to be truly interested in learning about the subject.
Nestle a Success Program at UNYP NYC Group Professor Dr. Dimitris Andreou presented to the Czech Nestle group the concepts of Knowledge Management and its application to innovative companies. The learning objective of this class was to propose a best practice knowledge management system for Nestle, Czech Republic. The final product is a professional deliverable product, and the expectations are for it to become the best practice initiative for the Czech Nestle operation. My name is Mahmoud Rajablu; I was born in Iran but live in Canada. I joined the international consulting profession several years ago which took me to the wonderful Macedonia in December 2005. I joined the New York College / IUKB MBA program in February 2006 where I met a group of kind professionals and good friends. I found the team and school a welcoming one, and the ideal place to re-enter academic life after an absence of several years. I have greatly appreciated the flexibility and being able to do this on my own terms and at my own pace. The MBA/MIS studies was a boost in my career and further achievements including in my recent contract as an ICT/MIS team lead on a World Bank funded project in Afghanistan, a country whose people I share my greatest sympathy and historical similarities with. I would also like to take the opportunity and add that Macedonia has been a home where I have worked, made good friends, but most important, where I found the love of my life and future wife.
Dr. Dimitris Andreou has been invited as a core speaker by the department of Informatics of the Ionian University to give a lecture on the significance of knowledge management in the Health Care Sector. The seminar was scheduled for December 3rd in Corfu and December 10th in Athens. (Announcement http://www.ionio.gr/msc/announcement.htm)

New Opportunities of Study in A New Era
By Petros Kontonatsis, MBA Programme Manager HND-BSc Computing New York College Athens
16
one can deny that we leave in a marvelous new technological era, as in just a few decades man has achieved so many technological marvels in several fields of sciences, especially in the field of telecommunications and computer systems. It is becoming common for all the people of developed and developing countries, to use computers and mobile telecommunication devices or the World Wide Web with the same trivial spirit that in the past years one used the wired telephone or the TV set. Especially young individuals' ability to become quickly familiar and very shortly to be able to manipulate and troubleshoot technologies and devices, is something evolving in a very natural way. The evolution of Homo sapiens to Homo Cyberneticus is taking place right here, right now! In terms of the industry, this has led to the creation of brand new markets and services, surpassing in revenues and potential growth many traditional industries, putting some of them out of business and/or transforming others. In this new environment new jobs have spawned. Java programmer, Systems Engineer, Network Administrator and Web Developer are just a small sample of all the newly created positions waiting to be filled by new graduates. Employer demands have been standardized in expecting, that their current or future employees, to use computer systems in their everyday working environment. As a result, employees are required to achieve basic or advance knowledge in Computers before applying for every desk job an offer. A tremendous effect was also made in
the academic environment with new fields of study appearing as branches of existing sciences, especially Mathematics, Physics and Engineering, or by developing totally new areas under the very broad title "Computer Science". Certain majors might lead to very specific studies in programming languages and software design or networking and telecommunications or in developing web specific applications, while other majors include business or management courses combined with basic or advanced computing modules. For any person wanting to pursue his or her academic studies in the field of computing, a thorough research must take place to decipher the several different titles, that every University or College uses, to describe the major of study, sometimes with poor results. The individual must, first of all, acquire access to the course descriptions, something trivial in our days, if one has access to the World Wide Web, since all academic institutions own a website or through an academic brochure. The second step is to come in contact with a person responsible (e.g. Programme Manager) to obtain more specific information over the contents and syllabi of courses in order to gain a better understanding of the breadth and depth of the studies he or she will be pursuing. Careful investigation and having a clear view of what your future expectations of your studies are, will help you make a correct decision. Last but not least, the student's personal inclination and commitment are required in order for one to succeed, like in any other major pursue of goals in life. The only thing left is to set your sails for a cruise in this wonderful era.

Dr Dimitris Andreou, General Manager of NYC, is participating as an invited speaker at the Seminar Programme "Neuroscience: Knowledge Management in Health Care" (3-7 Dec 2007, Kerkyra, 10-14 Dec 2007, Athens) organized by the Ionian University. Dr Andreou's seminar is entitled "Corporate Knowledge Management in Health Care Services". His participation is part of the College's ongoing programme for establishing and cultivating research and other links with public Universities in Greece. 6. As of last year, the College has participated in proposals for public funding on two separate occasions: (a) through the project "Digital Future", funded by EU & The Hellenic Ministry of Development for the amount of 50,000 Euros, and (b) through the College's submission of a proposal for the "Peripheral Development Project" (ÐÅÐ) for funding up to 150,000 Euros for development purposes. On this opportunity, I would like to thank the numerous faculty members from all departments, whose names do not appear here, but whose research contribution (both on an individual and cooperative basis) has significantly assisted the College to define itself as a research-aware institution; without their past and present involvement, the establishment of CeR@NYC would not have been possible. In closing, let me note that the smooth and efficient operation of CeR@NYC can only be secured with the uninterrupted involvement of all of us and, for that purpose, monthly research meetings will take place, starting this December, where everyone is invited to contribute any new information or development in their area of expertise and share their knowledge and experience with colleagues.

Shipping Education in the Framework of Greek Shipping Development
Greek Shipping has currently shown a spectacular development, main features of which are: 1. A tremendous increase in terms of numbers: (more than 700 new ships have been delivered to Greek Ship-owners from 2002-2006 and an additional number of 600, are expected to be delivered by 2010) 2. All these ships are fully modern and technically advanced, so that, making each one of them terminal of its respective management office. 3. In our days, ships are fully managed by their management offices, by applying the three principles of management science: – planning – directing – controlling 4. The legal framework (local-regional-international) which covers shipping activities becomes even stricter. 5. The basic source from which Greek shipowners were traditionally recruiting personnel on board their vessels has almost drained. Recent statistics, issued by the Ministry of Mercantile Marine clearly show a dramatic reduction in the number of young people wishing to make a career in Shipping, while quality education is still scarce. Each time we are referring to local educational issues, concerning Greek Shipping, we must not put aside the so-called Maritime Education, which is directly related to the management of offices and fleets. Having said that, it is important to mention that Maritime Education is mainly offered by Universities with a variety of courses in Shipping Economics, Shipping Law, Shipping Technology, and other subjectareas. Despite the efforts made over the last years, Greek Universities have not yet managed to overcome problems associated with a number of issues such as: 1. Delivery of lectures in the Greek language (shipping is an international activity and its official language is English). 2. The use of the one and only textbook for each module of studies is another major problem, (lecturers in foreign Universities are always recommending a long list of reading references for each module). 3. The teaching staff has little working experience in shipping, I M P A C T
something which in foreign Universities (mainly British) is rather inconceivable. 4. If we add to all above, the general problems associated with higher education in Greece, such as: – long and repeated general strikes (i.e 2006-07 academic year) – loss of all exams periods (i.e 2006-07 academic year) – threat from Greek Univeristies' faculty to repeat general strikes during the forthcoming academic period 2007-08, we can easily conclude that: a. Greek Universities offering shipping courses, can not meet the special needs of the Greek Shipping industry and, b. Graduates do not possess the required employability skills. On the contrary, the local private sector of higher education has made significant progress over the last years and the following example can clearly illustrate this argument: The Department of Maritime Studies of New York College International Educational Group (www.nyc.gr), in collaboration with the University of Greenwich (London-UK), offers at college's central Athens campus, the innovative MSc Marine Engineering Management course of this well-known, for its Engineering and Maritime studies, British University. This postgraduate course offers to University graduates, as well as, shipping practitioners, already in possession of fundamental knowledge and skills, additional tools required in order to successfully assume their responsibilities as the individuals in charge of management of offices and fleets. From the launching of the program in September 2006, the immediate response of the local Shipping community was surprisingly very positive. Eighty per cent (80%) of the total number registered in the academic period 2006-07 were middle and top management shipping executives, while the remaining 20% new University graduates. Also, the increased number of inquiries for the forthcoming academic period 2007-08, clearly proves what local shipping circles have claimed so far: "a program tailor-made for Greek Shipping".

FILM DEPARTMENT TV STUDIES The New York College Department of Film and TV Studies continuous its dynamic presence as evidenced by its spectacular achievement in the recent international "Drama Short Film Festival". Twenty films created by our students were entered in the Festival, held at the city of Drama, in September 2007. This is a record number of entries, especially when one considers that it constitutes 89% of the total student film entries for the entire country. Continuing a tradition of successful participation in this major short film festival, this year, the film of Ms. Boudri "Kimon and Loucy" received the following three awards: • Best Student Movie • Technical Perfection • Best Actress Award won by Evaggelia Andreadaki. In addition, NYC Film Department participated in the "Film Panorama", organized by the newspaper "Eleftherotypia" for the past 20 years, -one of the major national film events- with 30 NYC Students' short films. Our students' presence was so impressive that world-famous director, Emir Kostouritsa, invited one of our alumni, director Kostas Mpatsogiannis, to Belgrade to participate in an international directors' meeting. Furthermore, we are proud to mention the distinction received by another of our alumni, Mr. Costandinos Pylavios, whose short film, "Ti ine afto?" was chosen to be shown in many theaters throughout the country, together with the major Greek blockbuster "To Fili tis Zois" by Nikos Zapatinas. From this year onwards, the Department has initiated the "Cine Club" which will start showing several movies throughout the year, open to the students and the public.

T
HE phenomenon known as job 'burn-out' was first labeled as such in 1974 by Freudenberger, from his observations and reflections on the extreme strain often experienced by workers in the helping professions, such as social work, nursing, teaching and police work. Since then there have been many studies of burn-out, primarily among human service professionals, but also increasingly in other areas of employment. Burn-out is a chronic affective response to very extreme demands from the work environment, especially pressures and conflicts arising from direct contact with and care of other people (Ganster and Shaubroeck, 1991). Burn-out Signals • Chronic fatigue - exhaustion and tiredness • Self-criticism for putting up with demands • Anger with those making demands • Exploding easily • Cynicism, negativity, irritability • Frequent headaches and gastrointestinal disturbances • Suspiciousness • Feelings of helplessness • Sleeplessness and depression • Weight loss or gain • Increased degree of risk taking Most researchers have adopted the conceptualization of burn-out proposed by Maslach and her associates (Maslach, 1982; Maslach and Jackson, 1981), who defined burn-out as having three components: a. emotional exhaustion, b. depersonalization of others in the work place and c. feelings of low personal accomplishment on the job. Emotional exhaustion is characterized by a depletion of emotional energy and a feeling that one's emotional resources are inadequate to deal with the situation. This in turn leads to a tendency of depersonalization of individuals in the work setting, a tendency to treat them as objects rather than people. The third component of burn-out is characterized by a tendency to evaluate one's behaviour and performance negatively. As a result, the person experiences greater feelings of incompetence on the job and an inability to achieve performance goals. Antecedents of burn-out have also been the subject of considerable research. Most research has focused on personal attributes or role characteristics as determinants of burn-out, but there is evidence that wider organizational variables may also play a role in burn-out development. Workers report more occupational stress when work objectives are unclear, when there are conflicting demands placed upon them, when they have too little or too much to do, or even when they have little input into decisions that affect them and affect other workers' professional development.
H U M A N
Facing Burn-out Consequences of burn-out are similar in nature to those of job stress in general, although they are frequently experienced more intensely. Several writers have categorized burnout outcomes as physical and emotional, interpersonal, attitudinal and behavioural. On the other hand, others have noted changes in the nature and frequency of co-worker interpersonal interactions (Cordes and Dougherty, 1993; Jackson and Schuler, 1983). Attitudinal consequences of burnout have been the most systematically explored with several studies demonstrating increased negative attitudes towards coworkers, the job itself and the organization. Under behavioural consequences others discuss increases in absenteeism and turnover and reductions in job performance, worsening relationship with colleagues, poor personal health, and problems with personal relationships as primary outcomes of burn-out. Harris (1984) points out that the general lower level of working performance associated with burn-out leads to an increased probability of accidents. Research suggests that a number of causes of burn-out are due to the structure of the organization. Nowadays, more and more businesses are offering health promotion programs with stress management as a primary component. Although burn-out may be difficult to define and measure because of the personal stressors people bring to their jobs and their varying personality characteristics, burn-out can be managed by either stress management techniques, life-situation interventions, perception interventions or even emotional arousal interventions. Coping with burnout can help one to prioritize time and energy more effectively, move beyond stressful or negative situations more quickly, head early warning signs such as disturbed sleep, lethargy, appetite changes, forgetfulness, depression or illness and be aware of individual stress triggers. Stress management techniques can enhance employee/worker well being and alleviate work-related strains. While these techniques require greater commitment and effort from the management and employees, research suggests that these stress management programs will be offset by long term benefits not only for the individual employees but also for the organization as a whole.

Interview with Dr. Anthony J. DeNapoli, Dean of International Affairs, Nova Southeastern University, USA What would you say to those who think that doing a Master degree in Education is a waste of money, given that most of the teachers in Greece hope for a job in the public sector?
of obtaining employment. Times have changed, and "the world is flat". We need to train students who can " think globally and act locally" in order to make a difference regardless of local culture and economy.
The Masters degree is quickly becoming the "norm" for educators in most parts of the developed world. It is no longer sufficient to only possess a bachelor's degree. One must remain current with the changing world and the shift to the information age. As we incorporate more and more technology into the schools and into the school curriculum, schools must incorporate curriculum changes that require students to work cooperatively in teams, and must change the role of the teacher from "sole instructor" to "learning facilitator". It is essential that teachers have the most up-to-date training. While many teachers in Greece may feel that since there is a national curriculum in place in Greece and that these changes will not occur‌.it is only a matter of time before they will be forced to do so not only in Greece, but in the European Union. Change in slow to occur in education, but it will indeed happen in Greece. Teachers who graduate from NSU's graduate education programs will be well prepared to meet the challenges of today's students, and well positioned to become leaders and effect change in their classrooms, schools, country and across the globe. A Master's degree will set individuals at a higher level and better position them for jobs that will be created in the future as we continue to become more and more global and truly interdependent. The competition is keen and students with a higher level of education will be sought after by not only schools but other learning organizations both in the public and private sector.
Do you believe that the new instructional technologies can change educational practices which are rooted in the system for many centuries? People still believe that a good education consists of a good teacher and a motivated student in a formal classroom setting, where the student and teacher develop a 'human' contact.
Although we are talking about a globalized market, how do you think that a degree from the US can help an educator who works and lives in a different economy and culture? Today, businesses and organizations are looking for new employees who possess solid credentials from institutions both inside and outside the country. Technology has now made it possible for students to remain in their own country and take degrees from institutions outside their country that were previously only available by traveling and living in a particular country. The USA has always had a very high number of international students studying at its colleges and universities due to the high academic standards and innovative program offerings. Universities and colleges in the USA rank among the best in the world. Research has shown that students with degrees from institutions outside their countries stand out among job applicants and have a much better chance
26
Human contact is essential in any type of business and will always be part of how we function, interact, and do business with each other. The use of instructional and other technologies has in essence enhanced our interaction with each other. Our research shows that there is much more student-student and student-teacher interaction occurring in distance education classes, than in traditional face to face classes. As always, there can be good and bad traditional face to face classes and good and bad technology mediated instruction. The instructor is the key‌and our programs provide quality training for teachers. As I have previously stated, the technology is here to stay, and the students of the "net generation" will expect and demand the use of technology in the classroom and in their work environments. Teachers will have to change to meet this need. There is no real alternative. The human touch will not be lost, but rather enhanced, and students will be challenged to soar to greater achievement levels. I don't think we have a choice, the students will set the agenda for how they want to learn. If teachers don't adapt, we are going to be faced with major discipline and academic issues, as well as increasing levels of students who drop out of school due to the fact that they are not motivated by the instructor or the learning environment. We must adequately prepare instructors to utilize technology in order to be successful in the classroom of the information age. Students will demand it, and we will be forced to provide it! Which are the biggest challenges academic institutions face at the moment? Academic Institutions are currently being challenged to provide innovative instructional programs that are application based and not just theoretical. Gone are the days of lecture based instruction. Active learning is the key to success. Students must be able to demonstrate what they learn and apply it to their individual settings. We must provide "outcomes based" programs that incorporate the latest pedagogical methodology and instructional technology into the curriculum. Teachers and professors must be adequately trained, and the institutions must possess the proper technology infrastructure to make H U M A N

this happen. We also must adapt and internationalize our programs and curricula to reflect current issues facing education, society and the economy. We can no longer operate in isolation. Partnerships, dual degrees, distance education, inadequately prepared/trained instructors are some of the biggest issues we currently face. Students are demanding more and more innovative programs and we must shift the paradigm from traditional education to innovative practice.
about degree acceptance. NSU has more than 93,000 graduates in 63 countries. We are the 6th largest private institution of higher education in the United States out of more than 1660 institutions. American degrees continue to be sought out by international students from across the globe. NSU offers programs in 23 states in the USA, Puerto Rico, and in more than 15 other countries.
What has been the most worth noticing development over the last few years in the education?
Some information regarding the collaboration between NYC and NSU‌
The number of new programs appearing to a world audience via distance education either utilizing a blended model of instruction, or a solely online instructional delivery mode is impressive. These programs are growing exponentially and a number of institutions have jumped into this market. Many institutions are simply not adequately prepared for this change, and do not have the experience or the resources that students need to be successful. NSU is a pioneer in this area and has been providing distance education programs for more than 35 years. We have outstanding student support resources that include the electronic library, outstanding professors who understand distance education and innovative practice, technology assistance, online learning assistance, and virtual and local coordination. There has also been a tremendous increase in partnerships and alliances among institutions over the Dr. ANTHONY J. DENAPOLI past 6 years. We are seeing more and more joint and Anthony J. DeNapoli, Ed.D., is currently Dean of International Affairs at The Fischler School dual degrees than ever before. I believe that this will of Education and Human Services (FSEHS) at Nova Southeastern University (NSU), in Ft. increase and become the norm. Students want to have Lauderdale, Florida, USA. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from Hofstra diverse experiences from different kinds of University, a Master of Arts degree in Education from New York University, a Professional institutions. International cooperation has also Diploma in School Administration, Supervision and Leadership from Long Island University, and a Doctor of Education degree in Educational Leadership from Nova Southeastern increased and becoming a preferred choice for many University. students. Professors are now not only teaching for one Prior to assuming his current administrative position, Dr. DeNapoli served as Executive Dean institution but for multiple institutions. This trend at NSU-FSEHS, a professor of educational leadership and supervision, curriculum and will continue to grow at alarming rates. In Greece, most of the candidates are interested in acquiring a degree which will guarantee recognition from the public sector. Can the NSU degrees in education be recognized by the Greek state, given that they are American degrees? NSU is an accredited institution of higher learning and as such, its degrees are recognized by the Greek government. In addition, since our programs are delivered via blended distance education models, the programs are indeed recognized in Greece. As always, individual employers reserve the right to accept or reject any candidate based on their personal preferences and or biases. Individuals should always check with prospective employers and governments

Masters Program in Clinical-Counseling Psychology
Why would you recommend the Masters Program in Clinical-Counseling Psychology to someone who wants to pursue a career in Counseling Psychology in Greece? La Salle's Clincal Counseling Psychology Master's Program strives to prepare students with the abilities and competencies requisite for the practice of professional counseling. The curriculum emphasizes a conceptualization of the role of an individual in relationships and life situations. Students are provided with course work and clinical experiences, which encourages them to examine the complex interplay of all forces (scientific, interpersonal, and spiritual) which coexist within and exert influence on an individual. The goal is to prepare counselors who will competently develop and implement comprehensive interventions, acquire a holistic perspective to health care, understand the complexity of addressing the overall, long-term well-being of individuals, evaluate and treat mental and emotional disorders, and address a wide array of relationship issues that will best meet the needs of clients within the context of that individual. The Clinical Counseling program at La Salle University is a 48 credit hour degree program that has been designed in order for the students at New York College to complete it in two years. There is a widespread belief in Greece that given the strong cohesion amongst the immediate and extended family which exists, there is no need for one to seek therapy/counseling in order to solve ones problems. What is your response to this? Although it is an advantage for one to have a strong cohesion with their immediate and extended family, sometimes people have some psychological, emotional, mental or spiritual struggles that they have not been able to process through and resolve by turning to family members. It is in these situations that it is beneficial for people to have an objective person to speak to in order to process and resolve issues. Sometimes the issues are directly related to family members. When this is the case, it is all the more beneficial to speak to someone outside of the family. When one decides to enter into counseling, this decision comes from a personal emotional strength. It takes this type of strength to be able to admit that one needs help, and then to ask for it. I suspect that the strong family connections that the Greek people are accustomed to is a benefit that contributes to enhancing their ability to utilize counseling in a manner that will be even more effective than it would without this type of family cohesion.

The specific program in Clinical-Counseling Psychology requires many hours of internship as opposed to many other counseling programs, which require a lot less hours. Why is this, and do you think that many hours of internship is a critical component to the program? Once students have a sound knowledge of psychological theory and appropriate skill training in the program, they obtain practicum and internship positions. The typical placement for practicum is about 8 hours a week, and the internship is from 12 to 15 hours a week. The practicum in 100 hours for three months and the internship is 600 hours for a calander year, 300 of which are to be direct client contact. We believe that for one to become an effective and competent counselor, one must further develop their clinical skills by actually working with the clients. This insures that when students graduate and enter the profession, they have had ample opportunity to counsel people with various mental health issues and concerns, under the supervision of an experienced clinician. They are therefore well prepared to work with different client issues and problems, and will have obtained confidence in their clinical competence. How do you think that a degree from the U.S can help a counselor/therapist who will be working and practicing in a different society and culture, quite different from that of the U.S? The skills that the students will learn can be applied within all cultures. As the students in Greece learn the skills they will learn them in the same manner as American students. The difference may be in how they apply some techniques due to cultural differences, but this is not difficult because the Greek culture is a part of the learning process, and will then be a part of the application as well.

Tell us a few things about your cooperation with New York College? New York College has been excellent in their approach from the moment of inviting La Salle University to offer its Clinical Counseling Psychology Master's Program here in Athens. All the folks at NYC have been wonderful. They are supportive, enthusiastic, helpful, and energetic. I must say, that Christine McGuire has been all of these things and more. Her vision of how the students can benefit from this program is inspiring. Her intent has been to offer the students a wonderful opportunity, and her vision is that it will benefit the people of Greece. Christine has been consistent in expressing her desire to give back to the Greek community, and her belief that counselors receiving excelling clinical education and training will ultimately benefit and contribute to the betterment of the Greek community.

I had the good fortune to assist in the implemenation of the Athens Clinical Counseling Psychology Program, and to teach the first course to the first graduate class.
A short bio of Dr. Donna Tonrey
What are the latest trends in the U.S with regard to your field? There is a good deal of research on evidence-based treatment, the impact family has on a person's psychological functioning, and taking a strength based approach to counseling. Current research aims to focus on what is effective in helping people with the entire range of mental health issues, as well as improving interpersonal relationships. We know that relationship issues are the most common reason one enters into therapy. Research also informs us that the two most important factors in clients' improvement in therapy is the client's own willingness and ability to change, and the relationship between the therapist and the client. These two factors must be kept in mind for all clinicians, no matter which theory or approach they subscribe to.

"Every business has a social impact, Berisha said, but the social impact of the Universities is the most important one and the best investment for the future of this country". Dr. Berisha, by expressing his highest appreciation for our University and its academic staff, assured, once more, the engagement of his government in order to to improve the educational standards, and the implementation of a rigid evaluation process not only regarding private but public universities also. He further, paid tribute to the memory of the first Rector and co-founder of UNYT, the late prof. Gramoz Pashko, for all his efforts not only regarding this University but the Albanian

political and social life as well. In conclusion, Prime Minister Berisha answered to many questions directed to him but the students regarding many aspects of the educational and public life in Albania, as well as other issues related to government policies. This was the second visit performed by a Prime Minister at UNYT and shows once more, the importance and high level of the educational status of this University, as one of the most distinguished academic institutions in the country, and as the only which provides its students an American university degree, while studying at home.

A CULTURAL CROSSROAD With the successful completion of the academic year of 2007, a series of Graduation Ceremonies were performed at all of the institutions of NYC Group, (Athens, at the Golf Club; Thessaloniki, at Hayatt Regency Hotel; Prague, athe the magnificent Zofin Palace; and Tirana at the luxurious Sheraton Hotel). The ceremonies were all successful as they were organizationally impressive and emotionally gratifying. We are proud to announce the graduation of approximately 600 students, of more than 40 nationalities, who were honored by being bestowed their degrees from our collaborating universities, while, simultaneously, being offered the congratulations and best wishes for their academic achievement, from Ambassadors of their countries. We, of the NYC Educational Group, take pride in the ethnic diversity of our student body, and are especially sensitive to the needs of each of our students, and have adopted a multicultural approach to university education. Our students have repeatedly characterized the NYC Educational Group as a "cultural crossroad". Our multicultural environment is reflected not only in its students and faculty, but also in the honorable guests and distinguished speakers: Dr. Ronald Roskens, former President of USAID, and Chairman of the Board of the American Council on Education; Dr. Rexhep Mejdani, former President of the Republic of Albania; Ambassador of Albania to Athens, Mr. Vili Minaroli; the Perfect of Thessaloniki, Mr. Panagiotis Psomiadis.

We are very proud to announce that our graduate student Mrs Aurela Rama, holding a BA in Communications by the State Univeristy of New York/Empire State College, has been selected to conduct her practicum in "The Economist", Athens. Speaking with her, she seemed to be very enthusiastic about it and she is happy that she can enhance her academic knowledge with valuable practical experience. The Career office wishes good luck in her first professional steps.
On October 30th, UNYP hosted a public presentation of a student run company IMPACT. IMPACT is the first student consultancy in the Czech Republic that was established in November 2006 by 10 students, six of whom are UNYP students. IMPACT serves as a form of exchange between companies and students. The main thought is to improve business performance through creative and innovative solutions. However, IMPACT should not only be a platform for students where they have the possibility to gain professional experience, but also an opportunity to learn about the philosophy "facta non verba"; to act rather than just talk about problems. As the president of IMPACT and UNYP student Alex Raiman put it during the presentation, students, who look back after their time spent in IMPACT, posses three qualities; initiative approach to problems, consciousness of the necessity of continual self education and an ethical approach in behavior both on the professional and personal level. Plenty of students were present at the kickoff event, which assured the organizers of the current trend of increasingly proactive thinking among the students.

UNYP has a very proactive student body that does not hesitate to take action on important issues at the university. The student newspaper UNYQUE is led by a group of student volunteers interested in journalism. They are advised by the editorin chief of Prague Post, a leading English-speaking weekly in the Czech Republic. The students explore essentials of journalism, as well as learn applied ethics in reporting. UNYQUE is an opportunity for the UNYP students to voice their interests and concerns. Student Council of UNYP works continuously with the administration in order to improve and enhance the academic experience of the students. The organization takes upon itself not only responsibilities concerning academic environment, but also obligations of student welfare, such as parties and leisure time spending. The SC organizes three parties per semester with a very high attendance of the UNYP students, as well as other meaningful activities for students, staff and public. UNYP Blazers, the university's soccer team has been very successful. Playing in the Premier Division of International Sport League and securing fourth place is certainly a major achievement. With new teammates, chances for better placement increase. There is a new subdivision of the UNYP Blazers team, our new basketball team. It started as an ambitious project of the Student Council based on increased demand for such a sport and it is still being formed. Even though the team is still in its beginning stage it enjoys a lot of support from administration as well as students.

Students of the University of New York Tirana:
The projects that made us triumphant at the "European SIFE Cup" in Warsaw, Poland "Small things can really make the difference in our country, therefore let us, the students start first." This slogan was the motto to implement in practice the gained knowledge, but also to give their contribution for many problems still not solved in this country. UNYT students have achieved quite a lot, indeed. They competed with 222 other world universities and gained the second place. But for the students of UNYT this was not enough. They started right away the preparations for the coming tournament which will be organized next year. This time with one purpose only: To be the First.

Students say... Tomas Kubica Tomas graduated from UNYP in June '07, with a bachelor degree in Business Administration and International & European Economic Studies. Before starting to work fulltime, Tomas took a month off to travel to India with two of his UNYP friends. "It was an unforgettable experience; from such a trip one really gets a much better perspective on life's priorities, people's values, and also his/her own self," explains Tomas. After returning to Prague, Tomas started working as a consultant for a leading management consulting company McKinsey & Co, helping clients solve their key strategic challenges. During the first few months, the job took him to Moscow, New York, Copenhagen, Athens, Vienna, and several German cities. "Every day brings something new, so there is no time to get bored," says Tomas. Tomas feels that UNYP prepared him well for his challenging position. "Analytical thinking, communication skills, working in teams, leadership opportunities in extracurricular activities and an international environment - all core attributes of the UNYP education - are part of my everyday work," he says. "The quality of our education and competitiveness of our students were also confirmed at a recent case study competition, where two UNYP teams ranked among the top three out of 30 participating teams," praises his fellow students Tomas. Tomas strongly believes in mentoring and community involvement. "I had an extraordinary fortune to have mentors, who truly cared about my personal and professional development. I feel a calling to 'pay it forward', and help someone else." Together with other fellow students, Tomas plans to get involved in a new initiative offering mentorship and career advice to younger students. "We all have something to share. The question is - are we willing to?" concludes Tomas.

Krystina Buskova After her Graduation from UNYP, Kristyna Buskova in 2007, recently started her Master at Cambridge University, Department of Anthropology and
Archaeology. "It was my dream," says Buskova, who will pursue a Master of Philosophy degree in Social Anthropology, leading to a possible PhD. Buskova spent three years at UNYP, studying IEE, but in her third year, she attended the University of Bremen in Germany, studying European studies and working as an intern at UNICEF. On her return to Prague and UNYP, she began an internship at "People in Need," an NGO which deals with human rights. She did translation work for the Nambia Project, an endeavor to create more female employment and work childcare options. This in part inspired her senior thesis entitled Causes of Gender Inequality in Education and its Consequences on Women's development which she worked on with ESC mentor Dr. Max Hilaire. Best of luck to Buskova with her studies at Cambridge.

Florensa Haxhi Studying at New York College was one of my best experiences. To be honest, when I took the decision to attend NYC I faced a real dilemma. I was thinking: "Is it worth it? Is this what I really want? Should I follow this path? Or is it better to follow a different direction?" I think that all these are questions that each of us asks himself/herself before deciding whether to take such an important step. But it did not take a lot of time before I realized that I had made the best decision. From the first class I attended here, I understood that this college was everything I had ever wanted. It gave me the opportunity to express freely and openly my opinions, participate in the classroom discussions, communicate with professors, and interact with students from different cultures. Furthermore, I had the opportunity to experience all the advantages that the American programme of study I selected, had to offer. During the years spent at NYC, I have changed both intellectually and emotionally. Now I am not only better informed, academically fulfilled, and professionally prepared for the competitive global job market, but I also feel more confident in myself and in my abilities. It is much easier for me now to speak in front of people, be an active team member, or even a team leader!! Now that the time to decide which MBA to choose, has arrived, I don't need to think twice. I am convinced that NYC hosts the best MBA programs. Therefore, whatever program I decide to enrol in, I am sure that it will pay back in a very short time. After all, being part of New York College, means taking a step forward toward success!!!
Niki Maria Serras After graduation from the University of Michigan with an undergraduate degree, I never had the intention of pursuing a higher degree. I arrived in Greece in June 2006, and soon after I found myself researching what opportunities were available. Especially for someone who is a native English speaker and working a full-time job. Much to my surprise, I found a perfect fit with La Salle University in Athens, at New York College, Athens campus. I enrolled in the Public Relations and Communications masters program, which, being held on the weekends, fit my busy schedule. Having experienced a large university for my undergraduate education, I enjoyed a small class of only 20 students from all parts of the world and different walks of life. The La Salle program proved itself time again to be an international learning experience. I benefitted
40
from the constant personal attention and guidance, and unlike my undergraduate degree, I was given the chance to know each professor and some of the staff on a first name basis. Throughout my educational and professional career, I often had unanswered questions about my direction in life. La Salle University provided solutions and alternatives to the timeless query; "what do you want to be when you grow up?". I recently moved back home to America, and for the first time I feel equipped to search out a position in the field that I have spent countless hours training for, in Public Relations and Communications. By combining theoretical with practical studies, La Salle has helped prepare me for the future, and I look forward to the endless possibilities on my road to success.
