CATALOGUE FOREWORD

Dear customers, business partners and interested parties,

In the last 15 years, Image Engineering has grown into one of the world’s leading companies in the development and production of test products for Digital Imaging. Initially focused on test equipment for digital photo products, the portfolio has been continually expanded and today it includes Video-Broadcast, Machine Vision, and Security Technology, among other areas. Our current imageQuality (iQ) Portfolio includes many new highlights along with our unique selection of over 260 different test charts (iQ puzzle) for all relevant measuring methods and our internationally successful test equipment (iQ dingus). Some of the new highlights include: analysis software outlined in the product group iQ spy, especially the new IEAnalyzer 4.5 with the optional video module. Our in-house developed software delivers significant, accurate measuring data and is easy to use. All that is needed to select an appropriate test chart, the relevant light source as well as to set up the test camera. A predefined number of individual images will automatically be loaded. These frames will then be sent to one of the selectable IE-Analyzer modules. A further highlight will be in the area of iQ prophet, a new software tool for the simulation of the qualities of image sensors – available in summer of 2010. Available now is the complete solution Universal Test Target (UTT), with which archives, museums and many other institutions can digitalize their image inventory. The National Library of The Netherlands in The Hague as well as the Metropolitan Museum in New York among others are already using this tool. However, that is not everything: in our jubilee year we will present even more highlights. Please visit our homepage www.image-engineering.de for more current information and register yourself for our newsletter. The new catalogue which you are holding shows the scope of our current products and services. LE6 The spherical illuminators work on the principle of an integrating sphere. A light source illuminates the interior of a sphere which is coated with a special white diffuse coating. A plane (measuring window) which usually needs to be small compared to the diameter of the sphere and oriented perpendicular to the incident light is illuminated extremely uniform. Due to our internal design the measuring window can be much bigger. A special construction allows to dim the light down to approximately 1% of the maximum illumination without changing the color temperature. The color temperature is 3200 K +/- 50 K. Different filters to change the color temperature are available as well as a 50 W and a 100 W version. The standard test chart size for the illuminators is our D280 format. D240S has the same slide format but a smaller picture format. Therefore it fits without an adapter. For the chart sizes D240 and D205 adapters are available (see our test chart assortment on page 22 ff).

LG2 The most uniform light box which works with four fluorescent tubes. Standard chart size for the LG2 is D280. One remarkable feature of the illuminator is its compact design. It fits even on the smallest laboratory table. An additional frame of solid metal provides high standing stability. The color temperature of approximately 4700 K can be filtered. The standard test chart size for the illuminators is our D280 format. With the LG2-D a dimmable version is also available.

LED-PANEL V2 The ideal measurement device to determine shutter and shooting time lag, autofocus time, burst frame rate and exposure times of digital imaging devices. Extremely precise measurements with an accuracy better than one millisecond are possible with this device. It is currently the only commercially available device that supports the upcoming ISO 15781 standard (Photography - Digital cameras - Measuring shooting time lag, shutter release time lag, shooting rate, and start-up time).

Ten rows with ten LEDs each are ordered in a square field. Each LED is switched on separately one after the other. At one time only one LED is illuminated. An additional row with ten more LEDs is switched forward each time the 100 LEDs of the main panel are done.

AF-BOX The autofocus box is designed to illuminate a test chart at different light levels. In combination with the LED-Panel the AF-Box can be used for low light/bright light shutter delay measurements of digital cameras. By using the two rotary conrol units it is possible to switch from one light level to the other immediately. So two different light levels can be set by just using a switch without remeasuring the illumination level again.

MEASUREMENT DEVICES STEVE Stabilization Evaluation Equipment (STEVE) - a device to check and measure the quality of image stabilization systems in cameras. STEVE is calibrated to exhibit the best performance at the most significant frequency/ ampiltude combination of the human tremor of 4 Hz and 0.2 degrees. The whole range of the frequency and the angle of the movement corresponds to the properties of the typical tremor. For the initial setup, the mounting stage allows to adjust the camera position. The movement parameters of the two axes can be set up separately. Moving about a single axis (yaw or pitch) is possible, as well as simultaneous operation in parallel or antiparallel way. Both, simple sine shaped motion and individual curves (e.g. to simulate a real handshake) can be realized and logged. To determine the influence of the handshake it is neccessary to combine STEVE with a test chart. We recommend our AF-Box. Camera weight

CAMSPECS camSPECS is a fast and affordable solution to measure the spectral response of a digital camera system (access to RAW image files required). It contains the hardware and software tools, which are necessary to perform the measurement.

The light source is a modified slide projector with a stabilized power supply, a special filtering of the light source and a customized optical system. A set of 39 narrow-band interference filters is used to generate the narrow-band light. The slide transportation system of the projector is used to move the filters one after another in front of the lamp. Beside the interference filters are neutral density filters, which are used as a brightness reference to correct for exposure variations. Exposure data is used to correct for different exposure levels. So it is possible to perform the measurement even with the camera set to automatic exposure control.

The evaluation software makes the measurement fast and convenient. It provides a batch conversion of common RAW files by controlling 'dcraw' and performs a dark frame subtraction. To measure the spectral response the software reads the pixel values from the pictures of the interference filters and the data processes. Additional features are the generation of a 3x3 color correction matrix and the assessment of the measurement by comparing real camera and predicted RGB values.

MEASUREMENT DEVICES Determination of CCMs (color correction matrices) The spectral sensitivities of a camera are interesting to look at but the real benefit is to use them to calculate the best color correction matrix for the camera. In order to do that the camSPECS software comes with a module that allows to calculate such a matrix based on CIECAM02. The required input data are the spectral response of the camera, the spectral characteristics of the illumination and the necessary spectral training data of typical objects the system is intended to capture. For photographic applications we have acquired the spectral radiances of more than 2000 natural objects in the visible spectrum under various illuminations. This database can be used and downsized for the purpose of CCM determination.

LIGHTSTUDIO

new

Cameras need to be evaluated under various lighting conditions and to compare cameras it is best to have a scene with natural objects, memory colors, and typical items that cause problems in images set up and illuminated in a constant way. Our lightSTUDIO is 1.3 m x 0.8 m x 0.8 m in size. It provides enough space to setup a typical tabletop scene and encorporates six different light sources that can be controlled and dimmed from a computer. The light sources are: Fluorescent bulbs of D50, D65, F11, F12, Halogen with native 3200 K dimmable with lowered color temperature, Halogen filtered to 10000 K.

SENSATOR

new

The 1288 standard of the EMVA (European Machine Vision Association) defines a method how to measure the characteristics of a typical machine vision camera without taking the lens into account. The first important thing is to measure the spectral sensitivity of the camera which can be done by using a version of camSPECS with an extended spectral range. For further analysis the characteristic curve is evaluated by capturing images at different irradiation levels using a monochrome light source with its peak irradiation close to the sensitivity maximum of the camera. From these images most of the important characteristics like quantum efficiency, noise, characteristic curve etc. can be derived. The SENSATOR is designed to provide the illumination for up to four LEDs at different wavelength (the standard version has 470 nm, 525 nm, 605 nm, 880 nm). It can be controlled from a computer via USB interface and the LEDs can be dimmed in 0.1% steps. The device comes with a software that also provides the evaluation based on the EMVA standard.

PRODUCTION LINE QA

new

Quality assurance Not all production lines use a quantitative evaluation of the camera performance in aspects like resolution, optical centering, shading etc. to differentiate the acceptable from the unacceptable cameras. This sometimes leads to a problem that the quality judgment depends on the individual person on the production line. This problem can be avoided using an objective method that has been developed by Image Engineering and is currently and successfully used in camera production. In one specific project the camera is partly produced by one company and partly by another one. In order to agree on the acceptable tolerances and minimize the failures the two companies use the same production line control system.

TE226 HDTV Color rendition test chart

The TE226 is an extended ColorChecker like testchart. This chart is available in a transparent version. In transmission higher saturated colors can be achieved. The chart is delivered with batch measured data - individual measured values can be delivered on request.

The chart is available in D280 and D240 format and the aspect ratio is 16:9. For color measurements we recommend to use an approppriate light source with a continuous spectral distribution like an LE6 with halogen bulb illumination. Fluorescent light is not recommended. LE6 with TE226

TE253 Modulated sinusoidal Siemens star

The TE253 9x can be used for resolution measurements of digital imaging devices. The result is an MTF curve for the system at nine locations in the image. Information about horizontal, vertical and diagonal resolution is given by the IE-Analyzer as a graphical display and in a text file for individual use (in a spreadsheet or for further processing). The chart and the evaluation method is part of the newest version of the standard ISO 12233.

18

SELECTED TEST CHARTS RESOLUTION CHARTS Version 4.5 of the IE-Analyzer is able to analyze three different types of resolution structures. The sinusoidal Siemens star, the slanted edges, and the white noise patches. On the Electronic Imaging Conference 2010 we published a paper that compares two additional resolution measurements with these three. One of them was the widely discussed dead leaves approach, a structure that consists of randomly sized and toned (gray levels) circles that lie on top of each other. The power spectrum derived from these structures by using a fourier transform represents the frequency content of the image. The second method was a bitonal Siemens star that uses the same principle as the sinusoidal one. The bitonal star is easier to produce but more sensitive to sharpening and other kinds of image processing. All these pattern have their advantages and disadvantages. Therefore it is interesting and necessary for our software to support all of them so that the customer can select the best method depending on the type of camera he needs to evaluate. In principle all methods should deliver the same result and as we have shown they do if the image data that is used is linear, uncompressed raw data. The two additional methods will be supported from the IE-Analyzer version 5.0.

UTT . TE262 A new approach in quality assurance for archiving

The UTT (Universal Test Target) is a solution that is designed to provide insight into the complete image quality of all types of high end cameras, and scanners used for archiving. The analysis follows the existing ISO standards for OECF, dynamic range, and resolution measurement. The target is available with various options in the DIN sizes A4 and A3 to A0. This makes the UTT suitable for all kinds of digitization projects, preservation and access, carried out by libraries, archives and museums. The analysis of a scan every morning ensures that the system is setup correct and ensures constant quality.

UTT saves time and improves quality The advantage of working with a single test target is primarily that it saves time in the digitization process. It is a single target that provides all necessary information about the imaging system. Never before have scanner manufacturers, digitization companies, libraries, and archives used one and the same target to evaluate the technical quality of scanners and cameras. This will greatly improve the communication between the different parties and therefore also the technical quality of the digital files. DIN A0

UTT is an open standard The technical specifications of the UTT are available on the UTT website www.universal-test-target.com This enables a broad use of the target.

Scan reference chart To ensure that each and every scan is in focus, correctly exposed, and white balanced the scan reference chart is the right chart to put aside of your archiving assets. The chart consists of gray steps, color patches, a scale and resolution pattern. It allows automatic analysis of each scanned page and - in combination with the right software - provides information for the reason if a specific page happens to be out of specs.

SPECIAL CHARTS (MICROSCOPY, MACRO, ENDOSCOPY) To produce charts for macro photography, microscopy or endoscopes is a challenge for all chart manufacturers. Charts with bitonal pattern are easy to produce as chrome on glass or transparent film but when it comes to half toning things get difficult. Here is a selection of a few charts that are suited or designed for systems that photograph small objects. Our TE188 is the X-Rite ColorChecker that we are able to manufacture in a 24x36 mm size. It can be used to verify the color reproduction quality in combination with our IE-Analyzer software. The USAF 1951 (TE136), ISO pattern No. 1 (TE143) and the ISO pattern No. 2 (TE132) are targets that consist of bitonal structures with up to 512 cycles/mm. They are made for visual inspection. TE132

TE188

TE136 TE143

For the determination of the MTF for these devices we can also produce bitonal Siemens stars (TE120, TE121, TE148) that are supported by the IE-Analyzer from Version 5.0 on that we will introduce in September 2010. The OECF can be determined using the 24x36 mm ISO21550 (TE240) that was originally designed for scanners and is supported by the IEAnalyzer as well. In addition we sell all the Applied Image targets that include scales, grids, and other calibration pattern for microscopes and related devices.
