Why Automate?

Broadcast robotics are already providing cost effective solutions in a wide range of applications from simple one or two camera studios to complex networks utilising total robotic solutions for everything from news broadcasts to live sports action.

The increased capabilities and creative advantages of broadcast robotics are ensuring its rising dominance in studio camera support. More and more broadcasters are taking the decision to move into robotics to reap the obvious benefits:

“We need to maximise our resources while minimising manual operation of the equipment – but at the same time, we insist on providing our viewers with top quality and exciting programming. Vinten Radamec is helping us to achieve just that, especially in the case of live sports broadcasts, which demand fast and reliable operation. We have found that Vinten Radamec Fusion robotic systems are the best fit for all aspects of our operation – from payload and effective remote control to general ease of operation.” Dominic Leung, Managing Director of Television & Content, PCCW

04

Why Automate?

High quality, repeatable on-air movement

Ability to position cameras in inaccessible areas

Each shot is stored and executed precisely, so directors and stations can maintain a unique look for each show, preserving the station or programme identity.

The camera can be placed in inaccessible or remote locations to provide interesting and unusual shots. This provides access to areas of high security or scenes where an operator would otherwise disturb the subject.

“The Vinten [Radamec] solution is a completely integrated package. We’ve been waiting for this type of package for years.” Paul Lacombe, President, Brainstorm America

www.vintenradamec.com

Dramatic reduction of production costs

Reduced complexity and increased flexibility

The use of broadcast robotics guarantees highly repeatable performance which dramatically reduces production costs. Automating camera positioning and control releases operators to undertake more creative and fulfilling work without compromising production quality. Overhead reductions are typically as much as 50%, achieving payback on the investment within three years or less.

The user interface is easy to use, and operators are able to learn the necessary skills within a few hours and can then concentrate on achieving perfect framing on every shot.

“We had no robotic experience; The operators picked it up, and in a day and a half of training they were using them. The control console is very simple, easy to learn. Dusty Granberry, Director of Broadcast Operations and Engineering, KEYE TV

Vinten Radamec LCS Legislative Control System

The Vinten Radamec Legislative Control System (LCS) provides multi-user, multi-facility control of cameras, CCU controls and robotics devices, ensuring rapid, accurate shot acquisition required to televise parliamentary and legislative procedures. The system is configured for a single control system and can be expanded to multiple control stations with multiple cameras, providing shot acquisition through joystick panel and touchscreen control. The LCS also provides interface links to additional facilities such as data tablet operation, touch screen systems, microphone systems, character generators and vision switchers. The flexible and intuitive user interface is based on Windows XP, and the Graphics User Interface (GUI) provides the operator with up to date information on the available functions and status of the system, and each seat in the software seating plan is associated with multiple cameras, each with multiple shot capabilities. The operator assigns and prioritises a series of shot types

36

Control Systems

against each seat (or target) which is then recalled through touchscreen control. The system calculates the best quality shot available and pan and tilt heads associated to these shots will automatically move into position. This intelligent system can also be used in manual or automated mode, to ensure the best available camera shot is taken to preview or switched to air. In manual mode the operator selects and controls single or multiple cameras via the external device, using the standard preset shot available. In automated mode, the standard cue table offers a priority camera selection on each pre-saved shot. Shot selection can also be controlled via an external trigger such as a microphone switcher. When a particular microphone is activated it can be used as a trigger for shot recall, from which the LCS calculates the camera shot type required and sends the shot to preview. This enables rapid shot selection which in turn allows the operator to concentrate on trimming the on-air cameras.

Building on the award winning Quattro S, the SE variant maintains all of the benefits of the ergonomically assisted lifting column, the small doorway width, and the on shot performance of any Vinten pedestal.

In keeping with Vinten Radamec’s aim to simplify virtual tracking solutions, the output from the pedestal is integrated with the Vision 250E, Vector 430i, Vector 750i and Vector 950i head and lens position feedback into a single data channel to the rendering system of a virtual software image generator.

To provide the tracking solution, high quality precision encoders have been integrated into the wheels and column. Also included is one electronics module, and base processor which deliver the accurate position data for all axes. This combination with the head information provides precise real time digital electronic positioning over the floor and in elevation.

Key Features and Benefits + Best in class manual capability + Precise, real time digital electronic positioning of floor and height movement + PDA user interface simplifies set up in the virtual studio and provides positional feedback and calibration data

Virtual Tracking

The homing procedure has been simplified further for ease of operation, with flexibility on the direction and angle of approach, and a fast targeting option. A cable management system is incorporated into the pedestal, to prevent the cable being caught or tangled during repositioning.

The combination of simplified homing and set up procedures, precise digital electronic positioning and on shot performance ensure that the Quattro SE is an ideal solution for virtual studios around the world.

Reference

A PDA is included to provide the configuration and operator’s user interface, significantly simplifying the set up in the virtual studio. This is delivered through the latest calibration routines, head set up and optical axis offset input, whilst also providing the operator with enhanced functionality such as quick homing, and virtual set trimming.

Free-D 3D Camera Tracking System 8 axes of motion tracking

All virtual studio systems must know the precise position and orientation of each studio camera in order to render a virtual set from exactly the right viewpoint. Free-D is a unique camera tracking system that uses an advanced image analysis technique to measure the position of a camera. As the system does not require any physical mechanical sensors, the camera can be used on traditional pedestals, operated handheld or mounted on a crane. The Free-D system, uses a number of passive coded targets placed in the studio lighting grid. The targets are constantly illuminated and viewed by a small CCD camera mounted on the studio cameras. Each target is uniquely identified by a circular bar code and the use

50

Virtual Tracking

of narrow band LEDs and retro-reflective material ensures a sufficient number remain visible under normal studio lighting conditions. The image from the tracking camera is processed by a Free-D unit to calculate the exact position and orientation of the studio camera. This is done by real time analysis of the image to identify each target. Knowing the physical location of the targets, Free-D calculates the position of the camera to a very high accuracy. The zoom and focus axes are monitored by high resolution optical sensors mounted on the lens. This data is combined with the video from the small camera CCD as ancillary data. The Free-D processor then calculates the Pan, Tilt, Roll, X, Y, Height, Zoom and Focus parameters to accurately pin-point the studio camera position. The complete data package is transmitted via a high speed serial data link to the 3D VR system. The protocol for this link is based on the Vinten Radamec Serial Position Interface protocol already supported by 3D virtual studio system suppliers.

Operations and Advantages + Measurement of the camera position to better than 1mm and orientation to 0.010˚ ensuring precise matching of the real and virtual worlds + Operation with a wide variety of camera supports including manual pedestals, cranes and even hand held cameras + Consistent smooth tracking even when moving between real and virtual areas in a studio + No in-vision pattern interfering with the chroma-key process, enabling shadow and reflection effects to be more easily created + No need for any additional sensing mechanisms to achieve consistent 360˚ tracking + Unrestricted movement of multiple cameras even in large studios, including full 360˚ pans + No restriction on depth of field of the studio lens, allowing normal lens aperture and studio lighting conditions + Virtual character insertion + Film set pre-visualisation via video-assist

Key Features and Benefits + 8 axes of motion tracking + Unlimited number of cameras + Multiple studios + Minimal daily set-up + Passive target infrastructure Principle Features + Pedestal, crane or handheld operation

+ Compatible with large, small and tall studios

+ Position resolution 1mm, orientation 0.010

+ Introduces only 1 frame of delay + Unrestricted movement of multiple cameras 360˚
