Industry Pioneers
Technological Innovation
PAG began designing and manufacturing production and post-production equipment for the film industry over 40 years ago. During the 1980s the demand for power for the first portable electronic cameras led the company into the Broadcast Television arena.
PAG has always maintained its own Research & Development facility, which has enabled the company to develop the world-leading technology that is embodied throughout its product range today:
• PAG introduced one of the industry’s earliest battery mounting systems, the PAGlok System, which is still widely used today. • PAG pioneered microcomputer-controlled fast-charging for broadcast camera batteries with the introduction of PAG ACS (Advanced Charging System). It had previously been believed that fast-charging was dangerous and would result in reduced battery life. PAG proved the opposite was possible.
Premier Quality It is PAG’s intention to create the highest quality product for the market. Safety, reliability and durability are the prime concerns at all stages of a product’s development. The name ‘PAG’ on a battery, charger or light is an assurance that only the highest-quality materials have been used in its construction, and that it has been designed to have the longest possible service life.

PAG’s Total Battery Design Philosophy
Batteries Technologically Advanced
No Cell-Imbalance
PAG batteries are the most technologically advanced in the industry. They incorporate many unique proprietary features designed to assist the cameraman and prolong battery life.
The Li-Ion cells are matched to extremely close tolerances so that the battery pack is perfectly balanced. Severely imbalanced batteries can leak electrolyte and Li-Ion cells cannot be rebalanced after assembly. The low-resistance inter-cell nickel strapping and cell layout are constructed to optimize current sharing, reducing one of the common causes of cell-imbalance.
PAG batteries are manufactured to withstand the strains and stresses of use in the harshest environments, and to perform consistently over their natural lifetime.
PAG is Synonymous with Safety PAG invests a great deal of time and money designing and manufacturing safe battery systems which meet very stringent technical requirements.
Compatibility
PAG ensures that the battery is allowed to operate only within strict limits. PAG could allow higher charging voltages, and lower discharge voltages, which would create a battery with a slightly higher capacity. PAG could also allow a higher current to be drawn, however, the result would be reduced battery life and an increased chance of electrolyte leakage. Accordingly, the battery’s internal protection circuits and the sophisticated protection software have been set conservatively, with safety and battery longevity as the prime considerations.
PAG has always embraced universality. It is the only manufacturer that offers products that are compatible with the four most popular battery mounting systems: V-Mount, PAGlok, Snap-on (Anton Bauer) and NP1. PAG also offers mount adaptors that enable you to convert systems.
Why Li-Ion? Modern cameras and working conditions require lightweight, reliable batteries, with extended run-times, longer cycle lives and accurate run-time information. PAG Li-Ion batteries are designed for such conditions. They utilise advanced, high-quality Li-Ion cell-technology that possesses a high energy density, making it particularly well-suited to powering a wide range of modern cameras.
PAG’s electronic protection system guards against: over-voltage, under-voltage, over-current, over-charge, over-discharge, overtemperature, under-temperature and inappropriate charge sources. The protection circuits are fast-acting, and able to withstand highvoltage transients and reverse voltages.
Two 95 watt-hour PAG Li-Ion batteries will provide enough power for a day’s shooting for most broadcast camera set-ups that include an on-board light. PAG Li-Ion batteries are compact and can be transported easily in your camera bag.
Multiple-levels of safety, backed-up with proven software-driven mechanisms, are included so that safe operation is not totally dependent upon the continual operation of a single protection circuit.
PAGlink Li-Ion batteries can be linked to provide a much higher current draw capability, often required for powering high-definition cameras and accessories used for digital cinematography.
The circuit boards within the battery are designed so that all points of high voltage are separated by the maximum possible isolation gap, thereby negating the chances of a problem even if electrolyte were to leak across the board.
One of the benefits of Li-Ion technology is the low self-discharge rate. This means that batteries do not have to be topped-up if they have not been used for a few days. There is also no ‘memory effect’ as Li-Ion batteries do not suffer long term problems as a result of partial charging and discharging.
Latest Cell-Technology PAG uses only the latest, premium-quality, branded Li-Ion cells in its products. High-quality cells are a vital prerequisite to the creation of a safe Li-Ion battery. Low-quality cells, which have crept into our industry, are susceptible to internal shorts. The name ‘PAG’ on a battery is an assurance that only the highest-quality materials have been used in its construction. PAG’s cell-testing programs continuously assess all relevant cells from reputable manufacturers and the company selects the best using a number of criteria, including headline capacity, cycle life, voltage holdup under load, and most importantly, safety. However, safety and reliability are not merely determined by the choice of cell - it is the total battery design philosophy that is important.
Batteries
PAG uses only the highest quality components in the construction of its batteries. Safety, reliability, and durability are the prime concerns, from conception to final assembly.
As a final, absolute protection against electrolyte leakage, the circuit boards are completely coated with Parylene, a conformal coating that is usually reserved for specialist aerospace and medical applications. In long-term tests, Parylene was the only circuit coating material which was not softened and eventually penetrated by the cell electrolyte. This expensive, but essential process is unique to PAG batteries and effectively guarantees that there will not be a fire in the event of electrolyte leakage.
Polycarbonate Cases The mechanical design of the battery provides protection in the event of accident or abuse, cradling the cells against damaging shock and vibration. PAG battery cases are manufactured from high-impact, injection-moulded polycarbonate. The material is inherently very strong (it is used for motorcycle crash helmets) and is unaffected by the solvent powers of the battery electrolyte. Commonly used materials, such as ABS, are dissolved and weakened by the electrolyte. PAG cases also feature non-slip external features for secure handling.

PAG’s Total Battery Design Philosophy Capacity Indication PAG’s battery capacity indication technology is the most advanced in the industry. PAG Time Batteries incorporate a built-in capacity indicator and run-time display that is more accurate than any other available. It is one of the best examples of superior PAG technology.
The battery’s internal processor achieves this by taking into account the changes of load that occur during use, the charge status, the condition of the cells, and the ambient temperature. PAG is the only company to have achieved this.
PAG’s revolutionary integral battery display software was designed and developed at a time when the LED ‘fuel-gauge’ was state-of-the-art. The Time Battery features an alpha-numeric LCD that provides a continually updated prediction of remaining equipment run-time, on-load, to a resolution of 1 minute. Capacity is displayed in Ah (to a resolution of 0.1Ah) and percentage (to a resolution of 1%).
PAG’s lower-cost e-series batteries incorporate a 5-LED capacity indicator that is able to show percentage state-of-charge, and on-load run-time to a resolution of 10 minutes. Additionally, the following information is available via the battery display: battery software version number; total cycle count to date; state-of-charge; and internal cell temperature.
Numeric LCD Run-Time & Capacity Indicator PAG Time Batteries incorporate a numeric LCD that displays remaining run-time and battery capacity. At the press of a button it shows run-time against load...
...in hours...
...followed by minutes.
Available capacity is also displayed, in ampere-hours (0.1Ah increments)...
...followed by percentage (1% increments).
The ‘MINS’ LED then flashes twice.
The number of minutes is indicated: 1 LED = 10 mins.
Batteries
5 LED Run-Time & Capacity Indicator Capacity is displayed as a percentage (each LED = 20% approx.) 1 LED flashing = less than 10% of capacity available.
Two button presses on-load activates the time display. The ‘HRS’ LED flashes twice.
The number of hours is indicated by the number of lit LEDs: 1 LED = 1 hour.
UN Testing PAG Li-Ion batteries are tested, by an independent test facility, for compliance with United Nations specifications (a requirement of air transport and civil aviation authorities). Testing is required because poorly constructed Li-Ion batteries have been known to break down internally and self-ignite (See Air Transportation on Page 34).
• The PAG V-Mount L95e (Model 9310V) displays available capacity as a percentage in the Sony camera viewfinder. • The PAG L95eR (Model 9310R) displays available capacity as a percentage in the Red One camera viewfinder.
A test report for each of PAG’s Li-Ion batteries, and not just the individual cells, can be obtained from PAG Ltd.
• The PAG Snap-on L95e (Model 9310A) displays available capacity in the viewfinder of cameras that use the Anton-Bauer system.
Charger Communication & Longer Battery Life
Upgradeable Firmware
PAG Li-Ion batteries incorporate an integral digital communication system which speaks to PAG chargers and determines the right charge regime for the battery; thereby achieving the maximum capacity safely, and ensuring a longer battery cycle life.
PAG batteries are firmware upgradeable, so that the program can be updated in the field, if necessary, without the need to open the battery case.
Service and Technical Support Viewfinder Data Display PAG batteries support various viewfinder data displays, to supply the state-of-charge stored in the battery’s integral computer, for display in the camera viewfinder. • The PAGlink battery system allows multiple batteries, working as one, to report their collective state-of-charge information for display in the camera viewfinder. PAGlink supports all viewfinder information systems and adapts automatically once connected.

PAG chargers are the secret to extended battery life
Chargers PAG Advanced Charging Systems PAG is the pioneer of microcomputer-controlled fast-charging for broadcast industry batteries. PAG chargers are the most versatile and advanced battery management systems available; they are easy to operate and the latest models are fully automatic. The proprietary software that controls the charging process will extend the working life of your batteries beyond anything that can be achieved using other systems. PAG’s latest chargers incorporate iPC Intelligent Parallel Charging, designed for the simultaneous fast-charging of PAG, Sony and IDX Li-Ion batteries. PAG ACS is a sequential Advanced Charging System suitable for fastcharging PAG Li-Ion batteries as well as Ni-MH and Ni-Cd batteries of any reputable manufacturer.
PAG’s unique Intelligent Parallel Charging software incorporates three phases. First it prepares batteries which are shut down or deeply discharged for charge acceptance. Then it determines the type and stateof-charge of the batteries, and the maximum current that can be applied. Finally, it shares the current intelligently between the channels, briefly addressing the most discharged batteries first, before simultaneously fully-charging all batteries as quickly and efficiently as possible.
PAG Advanced Charging System PAG introduced accurate fast-charging for broadcast camera batteries when it was thought wrongly to be damaging. The PAG ACS software has evolved over time as new battery technologies have been adopted by the industry. PAG ACS chargers are intelligent, requiring only the positive and negative connections to analyse the battery and apply and monitor the charging process.
Fast-Charge Termination To perform properly, batteries must be charged by exactly the right amount. Undercharging gives less than full capacity and a shorter run-time, whereas overcharging can permanently damage the battery. To ensure that the fast-charge current is stopped at the correct time, and in order to detect the many varied problems associated with faulty batteries, the PAG ACS microcomputer uses a combination of several cut-off algorithms. The software developed to do this is the most powerful and complex part of the PAG ACS charger.
Automatic Charge-Rate Selection In acknowledgement of the wide variety of batteries that are available to the camera operator, PAG has incorporated further revolutionary software in its chargers that provides an easy and efficient system of battery management. When a battery is connected to the charger, a period of analysis ensues in order to detect the battery’s cell-chemistry, state-ofcharge, capacity and condition. The charger then automatically applies the correct regime to achieve a fully charged battery with the maximum capacity and cycle life.
A Variety of Features The features of each PAG charger can vary to include either 2 or 4 channels, a built-in camera power supply or special charging programs.
Li-Ion Recovery PAG chargers will automatically recover PAG Li-Ion batteries when the output has been shut down by the battery’s internal protection circuit. Recovery Charge The Recovery Charge Program can be used to regain battery capacity lost as a result of extended storage or operation under adverse conditions. Maintenance Charge An automatic Maintenance Charge is applied to Ni-Cd and Ni-MH batteries, after full charging, to keep them in peak condition and ready for instant use. This program is not required for Li-Ion batteries. Information Displays Large backlit LCD displays indicate the status of the battery and the charger, providing information such as charge loaded and battery voltage. AC Camera Power Separate Camera Power Adaptors are available for use with the Cube chargers that enable you to power your camera from an AC mains supply. The PAG CPA outputs approximately 100W and is suitable for use with modern broadcast cameras which can be powered by 14.8V Li-Ion batteries.
Chargers
PAG Intelligent Parallel Charging
Discharge/Charge Batteries which have been repeatedly subjected to partial discharging will benefit from the analytic Discharge/Charge program which also measures and displays available battery capacity.
Certain Quasar charger models incorporate a Camera Power Supply that provides a nominal 50W suitable for powering most professional broadcast cameras. In power supply mode the Quasar displays an accurate digital bar-graph of power consumption.
Charge a Greater Variety Of Batteries The latest PAG Cube chargers will simultaneously fast-charge PAG, Sony and IDX Li-Ion batteries, as well as sequentially charging Ni-MH and Ni-Cd batteries of any reputable manufacturer within the ranges 4.8V to 14.8V, 1Ah to 10Ah. PAGlok and V-Mount models are available. PAG Universal Chargers are available with a variety of battery connections: PAGlok, V-Mount, Snap-on (for PAG Snap-on batteries only) and NP1 pockets. They incorporate PP90 sockets on their front panels, and are capable of charging a great variety of batteries, within the chargers broad range, via the appropriate charge adaptor.
Construction PAG chargers are designed for location use. They are quiet, cool-running and have a lightweight impact-resistant moulded construction. The latest Cube models incorporate an aluminium frame and a strong, moulded, retractable handle that enables you to carry the charger with four batteries connected. All PAG chargers are designed to high electrical standards, with RFI certification, and are suitable for use in all broadcast environments. PAG charging systems automatically adjust to operate from AC mains supplies worldwide.

Paglights Award-winning camera lights
Lighting
Used throughout the world by news broadcasting organisations and videographers, Paglights are the ultimate in camera lighting The Broadcast Industry’s first dedicated camera light The Standard 12V Paglight was the first on-board camera light designed specifically to meet the requirements of the broadcast industry. PAG now offers a family of lights, designed to fulfil a variety of professional requirements, but sharing many of the unique features that made Paglight the industry standard.
Standard Paglight (12V) • The original halogen or arc 12V broadcast camera light is now LED also (Page 18). Dimensions: • 70mm wide x 103mm long x 115mm high • Reflector size: 45mm dia.
Paglights are robust, light-in-weight, cool-running and fullyfocusable. Their versatility has been achieved as a result of PAG’s patented plug-in lamp holder feature. This is best illustrated in the Standard 12V Paglight which is capable of tungsten halogen output, metal-halide arc and LED. LED Technology has gradually improved, addressing the problems that early examples displayed, such as poor spectral distribution and colour temperature. Using improved LED technology, PAG offers a plug-in LED option for the Paglight, to further increase its versatility and provide you with the most economical LED solution. Plug-in lamp holder options for this light also include Softstart, for use with Li-Ion batteries, and the power saving, regulated PowerMax unit, which incorporates a dimming facility called VariLux.
Paglight C6 Kit (6V) • An all-inclusive 6V lighting kit, incorporating 6V battery and charger, designed for use with small camcorders (Page 26).

Plug-in LED Dimmer Unit
Halogen, HMI or LED - Paglight does it all Revolutionary by Design Paglight is a revolutionary camera light, the first specifically designed to suit professional ENG/EFP requirements, and answer the many requests for an all-embracing, single operator camera light. Fully Focusable Paglight is continuously focusable with a beam angle that is variable from spot to flood. It has a soft, even spectral distribution with no hot spots or flaws. Cool and Versatile PAG's unique patented design makes Paglight the coolest running and most versatile camera light in the industry. Interchangeable plug-in lamp holders fit into the back of the lamp body. Variants of wattage and unit type can be exchanged without handling the lamp. There are five different lamp holder options available. Standard Halogen Lamp Holder Accepts 20W, 35W, 50W, 75W and 100W tungsten halogen bi-pin lamps. Softstart A halogen lamp holder that prevents the cold lamp start-up

surge from activating the over-current protection circuits within Li-Ion batteries. (This is not required when using the lamp output on a Sony camera). PowerMax Control/VariLux A voltage regulated unit that prolongs battery run-time and saves halogen lamp filament life. VariLux is a lamp dimming facility which also conserves battery power. PowerArc Paglight can be instantly converted to HMI by pluggingin the PowerArc unit. The unit consumes only 32W but provides the equivalent of almost 100W tungsten, but at daylight colour temperature. LED Dimmer The highly energy efficient plug-in LED module consumes only 11W, greatly extending battery run-time. The LED Dimmer Unit has a colour temperature that matches daylight and an output of 850 lux at 2m. The LED Unit’s dimming facility enables you to control light
intensity, in addition to Paglight’s spot and flood capability. Rotatable Accessory Kit This accessory ring holds any combination of snap-in accessories, including barn doors (tapered or parallel), dichroic filters that correct the colour temperature of the output, and a diffuser. The accessory ring is expanded to fit over the front of the light, can be rotated 360° to achieve the desired configuration, and then tightened to maintain its position. Softlight Diffuser & Filter Kit This kit includes a filter holding assembly that fits onto the barn doors of any Standard or Mini Paglight (including Paglight C6). It enables you to attach a supersoft light diffuser screen or colour correction filters.
Paglight Power Bases Low-profile, hot-shoe Power Bases enable the Paglight to be easily and quickly mounted to the camera, or removed after shooting. Power Bases are available with a choice of connector, such as PP90, D-Tap and XLR4. Various lead lengths are available, suitable for use with most cameras. The base allows the Paglight to be mounted to the camera via a variety of mounting options suitable for all Paglights, including an extender arm and a camera clamp (see Page 28).

7.2V Power Solutions
Power Solutions for 7.2V to 8.4V Camcorders & DSLRs
Broadcast Power for Handheld Camcorders and DSLR Cameras
PAG Down-Converter Leads for use with Pagbelt NMH
PAG has developed a series of products that enable you to power 7.2V to 8.4V cameras using a range of PAG batteries including higher voltage PAG L95e broadcast packs and Pagbelt NMH belts.
These DC Adaptor leads connect to the camcorder in the same way as the PP90 model, but incorporate an XLR4 connector that enables you to power the camera from a 12V, 13.2V or 14.4V Pagbelt NMH battery belt, worn around your waist.
There are three types of PAG DC Adaptor available. They allow you to power the camera using either: • 12V to 14.8V V-Mount or PAGlok batteries • 12V to 14.4V PAG battery belts • The 6V battery supplied as part of the Paglight C6 kit
PAG Down-Converter Leads for use with V-Mount or PAGlok Batteries The DC Adaptor plugs into the battery port of the camcorder, and into the PP90 power port of a PAGlok or PAG V-Mount Connector (see Page 31). These professional battery mounts can be worn on a trouser waistband or belt, or fitted to the back plate of a PAG Orbitor camera stabiliser.
PAG Down-Converter Mounts for use with PAGlok or V-Mount Batteries PAG offers a battery mount that incorporates a built-in DC Adaptor for certain camcorders. These mounts can be fitted to the rear of the camcorder. They feature a PP90 output socket that can be used to power a 12V Mini Paglight or other 12V accessories.

These DC Adaptor leads are aimed at camcorder users who don’t already own 12V batteries and chargers, and who are looking for an economic, all-in-one camera power and lighting solution. The Paglight C6 Kit contains a professional quality on-board 6V halogen light, a 6V 8Ah Ni-MH battery, and a designated charger (see Page 26). The appropriate DC Adaptor will boost the 6V output of the C6 battery to power the 7.2V to 8.4V camera, providing extended run-time. The same battery can be used to simultaneously power the 6V Paglight C6. The DC Adaptor attaches to the camcorder via the battery port. If you purchase an additional C6 PowerPack with your Paglight C6 Kit, you will be able to run your camcorder and camera light for twice as long, without stopping to charge a battery.

Battery Mount Adaptors
The PAGlok Connector was one of the broadcast industry’s earliest battery mounting systems. A PAGlok Connector can be provided for virtually any broadcast equipment power application. Now that Sony’s V-Mount system has been widely adopted, PAG provides its own version of the V-Mount battery connector for use with a wide range of cameras and equipment.
Belt-mounted battery mounts are a convenient way of carrying two batteries (PAGlok or VMount) to provide off-camera power for a range of applications. Output is via an XLR-4 socket. The batteries’ voltages and capacities are not connected in any way and power is not continuous.
Adaptors that provide compatibility between the Anton-Bauer and PAG systems have always been available from PAG.

Air Transportation
Air Transportation of Li-Ion Batteries
UN Testing The International Air Transport Association (IATA) in association with the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) and the United Nations (UN) set clearly defined rules regarding the air transportation of Li-Ion batteries. From January 1st 2009, the 50th Edition of the IATA Dangerous Goods regulations requires the independent testing of each type of Li-Ion battery, not just the individual cells, to ensure that the design and construction are compliant with the stringent regulations. This is a costly process for the manufacturer, but it should assure you, the customer, that the battery design is safe and of the highest possible professional standard. PAG Li-Ion batteries have been tested and certified to comply with United Nations Specification ST/SG/AC.10/11/Rev 4. Copies of the test reports can be obtained from PAG Ltd.
Air Transportation The IATA regulations also affect individuals carrying Li-Ion batteries on-board civil aircraft, and influence the way they are classified, labeled and packed when transported as air cargo or by road freight. Restrictions are imposed on batteries that have capacities greater than 100Wh.
• Li-Ion batteries that have capacities greater than 160Wh cannot be taken as hand luggage or checked-in under any circumstances. PAG recommends that customers also confirm with their carrier of choice, to determine any local rules and policies, before travelling. Your PAG Li-Ion batteries are fully protected against short-circuit and over-current. However, it is recommended that you make sure they are obviously safe and inspire confidence in the airport check-in staff: • Put tape over the contacts. • Place each battery in a plastic bag. • Pack batteries in your hand-luggage in a safe and secure manner. We advise that you carry a copy of the PAG Air Transportation Certificate supplied with each PAG PL96, L95 or L95e battery, or download a copy from the PAG website: http://www.paguk.com For more information regarding Travelling Safety with Batteries and Battery-Powered Devices, please see the following website:
PAG Ltd. hereby declares that PAG PL96, L95 and L95e Lithium-Ion batteries have a watt-hour rating of less than 100 watt-hours. This rating is in compliance with Section 2.3.5.9 of the 50th Edition of the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (2009).
Transport by Air Freight and Road Freight
The following information will assist you when travelling with or shipping Li-Ion batteries:
• Li-Ion batteries that have capacities of 100Wh or less can be shipped by air or road, without restriction, as long as they comply with Packing Instruction 965.
Transport by Commercial Airline / Personal Luggage • Check-in of Li-Ion batteries is not allowed unless the battery is attached to the camera or the equipment it powers • An individual may take on-board, in hand luggage, an unlimited number of Li-Ion batteries that have capacities of 100Wh or less.
34

Warranty and Service
PAG provides full technical support throughout a product’s lifetime, which includes servicing, repairs and technical advice. The quality of this service is second-to-none because PAG is the concept originator, design authority and manufacturer of its products.
Recelling PAG batteries should only be recelled by PAG. A cell replacement by a company other than PAG degrades the build standard of the product and leaves you with a battery of dubious quality, and a potential safety concern. As an alternative to recelling your battery, PAG offers UK customers a 25% discount on the price of a new battery of equivalent or greater specification, including a full warranty.
Recycling PAG provides a recycling service for all of its expired batteries. Simply return your batteries by prior arrangement to your PAG Agent, or to PAG Ltd. London. This ensures that the materials involved in their manufacture are recovered for future use, where possible, or disposed of in accordance with the appropriate legislation.
