FINDING YOUR PATH AT DEPAUW
Every student takes a unique path through DePauw. They choose different majors, take different classes, join in different activities, explore different internships and travel to different places. Put simply, every path is a tapestry of experiences that inspire a student for life.
As a nationally ranked, 100 percent residential, undergraduate-only university, DePauw is so confident in the outcome of its distinctive liberal arts education that we are the first university to guarantee it through the Gold Commitment. The Gold Commitment: • PROMISES STUDENTS that DePauw faculty, staff, alumni and trustees will provide a distinctive and relevant DePauw liberal arts education that results in a life of meaning and means. • ASSURES ALUMNI that their DePauw degree maintains its value, especially with their ongoing support of our students and graduates. • PROMISES EMPLOYERS AND GRADUATE SCHOOLS that they can expect well-prepared and accomplished graduates. • EXPECTS FROM STUDENTS that they fully invest in the DePauw Experience Portfolio of rigorous academics and robust experiences and graduate in good standing within four years. • GUARANTEES that DePauw’s liberal arts education will lead to post-graduate engagement. CULTURAL AMBASSADOR Language can often be a barrier, but Hyeree uses it to connect with people from different times and places. Growing up with a parent in the Air Force, Hyeree has lived abroad for the majority of her lifetime. Her interest in the global community led her to study in Peru with the Servicio en las Américas program, as well as in China, Hong Kong, Ecuador and Argentina. Hyeree then turned back the clock on her language and cultural interests. For her Honor Scholar thesis, she conducted research alongside an English professor on 13th-century manuscripts called the Lambeth Homilies. Hyeree had to learn to translate both Old and Middle English, which, despite their names, can look and sound nothing like the English we speak today. She presented this research at the National Council on Undergraduate research. After DePauw, Hyeree will pursue a Ph.D. in English literature.
I initially studied Spanish. Later, I focused on archaic languages and familiarized myself with the process of sociological research. As my skills developed, I was eager to put them into practice.” HYEREE ELLIS ’18 Lexington, Ky.; English literature and sociology majors; Honor Scholar; presidential ambassador; Timmy Global Health

PATHFINDER Cole came to DePauw because he wanted a place where he could explore all his interests. And that’s exactly what he found. During his first year at DePauw, Cole took as many classes from different disciplines as he could. To him, they were all potential majors. It wasn’t until after a conversation with his urban studies professor that he felt as if he could make a decision. “The thing I liked about urban studies is it applies to everyone and everything. Whether I took classes in English or political science, I could apply them to my major.” Outside the classroom, Cole’s interests are just as varied. Through the Sustainability Leadership Program, he works at the DePauw Nature Park as part of a wilderness conservation group, and he trains for cross country along the same wooded paths he maintains. “Between SLP and cross country, I’m lucky to have people I really look up to. A lot of upperclassmen have been helpful in my decisionmaking, pushing me to try new things.”
I think it’s great to be able to engage in so many different things. When I talk with friends at larger universities, I can tell there are experiences they are really missing out on.” COLE MARTIN ’20 Noblesville, Ind.; Urban studies major; cross country, Sustainability Leadership Program

CIVIC LEADER Developing and serving a community isn’t just an aspirational goal; DePauw students build that foundation here, honing their leadership skills and ultimately leaving DePauw prepared to be the leaders our world needs. From her first semester at DePauw, Diamond began building relationships with alumni practicing law who invested in her. Through those mentoring experiences, formative courses and the initiative she has taken in extracurriculars such as student government, Diamond has honed her leadership skills and pursued opportunities to study and lead abroad and on campus. As Diamond has spread her perspective on female empowerment at DePauw, she has enriched the culture of the school and inspired her classmates. “Since I’ve started playing a more visible role on campus, other women of color have begun stepping into these leadership positions – emboldened and empowered.”
Campus leadership has made me appreciate failure. In every single position I have held, I have never been perfect, but I learned to use those imperfections to improve my leadership skills.” DIAMOND MCDONALD ’18 Indianapolis, Ind.; political science major; Association of African American Students; co-president of DePauw Greek Association; presidential ambassador

INNOVATOR Many high school seniors struggle to choose between in- or out-of-state colleges. Masaya decided to look in a different country. Masaya was torn over whether he should go to college at all. During a gap year after high school, he decided he was obligated to continue his education so he could better give back to society. “But a Japanese university wasn’t suitable,” he says, “because you have to choose a major before being accepted, and my interests were too broad.” Instead, Masaya started to look at liberal arts colleges in the United States. He chose DePauw, where he is combining his interests in robotics, artificial intelligence, philosophy and neuroscience into a single independent interdisciplinary major. “I enjoy how you can think about these things from different academic perspectives, and that’s not something you can do in a rigid discipline.”
My first-year seminar changed the way I look at the world. It made me more unsure about things I’d taken for granted.” MASAYA SASAKI ’21 Kyoto, Japan; interdisciplinary major; Rector Scholar

COMPETITOR By empowering her to take on new and different experiences, DePauw prepared Sarah to be her best self. Sarah remembers meeting her future advisor and how he told her about the endless possibilities open to DePauw students. What she didn’t know was how much those opportunities would shape her as a person. It’s a familiar story: Sarah left high school knowing she had big goals; she just wasn’t sure what they were. What’s more, she needed a healthy confidence boost to start pursuing them at all. And that’s just what DePauw gave her. Through the Media Fellows program and coursework in her major, she learned to compete for herself. “A liberal arts education emphasizes experiential learning and exploring,” Sarah says. “It changed the way I thought and acted.” After an internship at Ghost Ranch in New Mexico, a study-abroad experience in Rome and a Winter Term at the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, Sarah now has all the confidence she needs.
You get out of DePauw what you want. Each student has their own DePauw story, their own DNA. I’m competing with myself to be a better version of me.” SARAH REDMAN ’18 Zionsville, Ind.; Communications major; Media Fellow; mentor; member Kappa Kappa Gamma; studies abroad in Rome; Ghost Ranch internship; summer at Columbia University
